BUGSY MALONE

HITS THE MALTINGS THIS NOVEMBER Anybody who is anybody will be there! A riotous new Campaign Amateur Theatre production of Bugsy Malone takes control of The Maltings stage in Ely from the 16th-19th November. 1920s’ New York and two gangs are battling it out. There’s a new weapon in town: the Splurge Gun, and Fat Sam and his gang are in danger of being beaten by lounge lizard Dandy Dan. Can Bugsy find a way to save the day? With direction and choreography by Samantha Dodd and Musical Direction by Gaz Brown, this family-friendly musical, written by Paul Williams and Alan Parker, will be sure to have you singing along. Based on the 1976 movie, that marked the start of the careers of many of the original cast, such as Jodie Foster and Scott Baio, our stage show has all the favourite numbers in: ‘Fat Sam’s Grand Slam’, ‘My Name is Tallulah’, ‘So You Wanna Be a Boxer,’ to name but a few! “We wanted our show to be as inclusive as possible” says Director Samantha Dodd “and we are lucky enough to have a cast of 50 of the most wonderfully talented children from 12 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Ely and the surrounding villages, as well as some from further afield in Cambridge. We have children who are registered deaf in our cast and crew, as well as neurodiverse children and we are supporting all of these needs by having professionally trained team members on hand. Bugsy Malone is the show that first gave me the ‘theatre bug’ nearly 40 years ago, and I feel passionately that any child interested in theatre, should have a Bugsy experience while they are young.” Joanna Wood, whose daughter Misty is in the show says, “Being part of Bugsy has given Misty so much confidence for life as well as just in acting and has undoubtedly provided her the opportunity to embrace and be proud of her deaf community, whilst combining it with her passion for acting. The cast and entire team have worked so hard to make this a success.” This sassy, splurge-filled show opens at The Maltings in Ely on November 16th. Performances: Thurs 16th – Sat 19th November at 7.30pm Sat & Sun Matinees at 2.30pm. There will be a BSL interpreted performance at the Sunday matinee. Tickets priced at £16.50 adult & £10 under 16 years see poster page 46

ACTING AS AN ATTORNEY UNDER A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY If you’ve been asked to act as an Attorney under a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) you may have discovered there isn’t much guidance about what the role entails. The only relevant section in The Code of Practice is headed “Your Legal Rights and Responsibilities” however, as the Code runs to 301 pages, it is not entirely surprising that lots of Attorneys haven’t read it! The starting point is to always assume that someone can make their own decisions. If they’re struggling, you can help by giving advice and information, but you shouldn’t tell them what to do. An LPA does not give an Attorney the right to decide how someone’s affairs should be run if they are capable of making decisions for themselves. If an Attorney doesn’t agree with the decision that’s been made, or they think it is ridiculous this does not give them the right to take over decision making. If an Attorney does have to make decisions, because the person can’t, then they should consider what is best for that person. One issue that frequently crops up is the ability of the Attorney to make gifts. The rules about gifts are strict and are limited to specific occasions such as: birthdays, Christmas, weddings, anniversaries and any other times the family would normally give. The amount given should be reasonable given the amount of money the person has. You can read the full article here on acting as an Attorney here: vinelaw.co.uk/blog. Or you can give us a call Cath Collins on 01353 240079 or cathcollins@ vinelaw.co.uk.

WI ARE NOT PUTTING THE BRAKES ON, SO FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS!

But it’s not all ‘work’, there have been plenty of social activities too at our monthly meetings which have included glass fusing, informative talks from national charitable organisations as well as good old fun and games and socialising. This season we will be supporting No More Violence Against Women and preparing for our November Remembrance Craft Bomb, not to mention continuing with our ad-hoc litter picking and other small group events (think diners club, coffee catch ups, book club, craft group). We’ve also got our AGM coming up and Christmas Party with much more in between. If you too would like to get involved with Ely City WI then we would love to meet you. Anything from raising awareness, meeting new people or just doing something different then you are more than welcome as a visitor to one or two of our meetings to see what we’re all about.

As we move into Winter there is a small window to draw breath and reflect on some of the activities that Ely City WI have been a part of over the past few months. In addition to their monthly meetings, they have been busy with other projects, meet ups and initiatives and there doesn’t seem to be any sign of them slowing down! Supporting World Bee Day, Loneliness Awareness Week, International Day of Friendship and World Alzheimer’s Day; members have been getting out and about in the community. Ely City WI are passionate about making a difference and these are just some of the things they are involved in. Most recently members made fidget quilts and twiddle muffs for local care homes and their residents who have dementia.

FROM THE OFFICE OF LUCY FRAZER MP As we come towards the end of 2023, I wanted to look back on the year and let you know about some of the work I have been doing for you as your local Member of Parliament. When reflecting on the year so far, it seems apt to first highlight the event of the year – the wonderful coronation of Charles III and Camilla as our new King and Queen in early May. As the first coronation this country has seen for seventy years, it was always bound to be a special occasion, but I was moved by the many displays of national unity and celebration I witnessed over the Bank Holiday weekend. For all its memorable moments, the year has also had its challenges, many of which have been caused by high prices and bills. Although inflation has been driven down in the recent months, I know that the cost of living remains a real concern, and I am committed to helping my constituents across South East Cambridgeshire get the support and advice they need. I also know how important quality healthcare is to my constituents, and since I was elected, I have joined local health leaders and NHS trusts in calling for better health facilities in and around Ely. I was therefore delighted that the government invested millions of pounds earlier this year in a new Community Diagnostic Centre at the Princess of Wales Hospital which will deliver medical checks, scans, and tests – cutting NHS waiting times. I was also pleased to visit the newly refurbished St Mary’s Surgery in Ely, which opened in July and now has 50% more capacity.

and in July, I called together officials from the Department for Transport, the Combined Authority, and the County Council to establish how we might progress to the Outline Business Case as soon as possible. I am also calling for a new safe crossing to be installed at the BP/ Witchford Road roundabout, and I would invite you to sign my petition to make this happen here: https://www.lucyfrazer.org.uk/campaigns/ installing-safe-crossing-a10a142-ely-junction-1 On a separate note, the East Cambridgeshire Access Group have expressed their concerns about plans to redeploy ticket office staff onto the station floor. In response, I am liaising with Greater Anglia, who operate Ely Station, to seek reassurance that their proposed measures will not result in a deterioration in the quality of service for vulnerable passengers and that the number of staffed hours at the station will remain the same. I will be looking at their proposals for alternative provision very carefully and will raise any deficiencies with the Secretary of State for Transport. Finally, I was pleased to support Bishop Laney Sixth Form’s applicant for funding from the government’s £150 million ‘Post-16 Capacity Fund’ to expand its intake. The sixth form currently accepts 150 students per year group but will now be able to create a further 50 places per year group, taking the total intake from 300 to 400.

My annual Christmas card competition invites all primary school children (aged 4-11) in my constituency to design their own cover for a Christmas card. The closing date is Nov 3rd so you may be reading this too late but I look forward to choosing the winner very soon!

Visiting the new St Mary's Surgery

I wish you all the best for the rest of the year. And, as always, please do not hesitate to contact me on lucy.frazer.mp@parliament.uk if I can support you in any way. My efforts continue to deliver improvements to the A10 in order to reduce congestion. In May, I arranged a meeting with the Roads Minister to petition his support for future upgrades, 20 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

BREATHE EASY

Breathe Easy Ely is a support group for anyone with a respiratory condition. We are part of Asthma and Lung UK, a national charity and our group has been running for 9 years. Our meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at the Ely Beet Sports and Social Club in Lynn Road, Ely from 2pm – 4pm, but we don’t meet in January or August. There is plenty of free parking on site, plus it is wheelchair accessible. At the meetings we offer support, friendship and understanding of whatever respiratory condition a member might have. Family and Carers are more than welcome to come along too. We welcome all ages and conditions. Whenever available, a member of the Community Respiratory Team joins us to answer questions, give advice and offer general support. At most of our meetings we have a speaker who will give a talk. Previous speakers have included British Oxygen Company who explained about the various ways of delivering oxygen, a local fire crew who talked about safety in the home generally but with particular reference to storing oxygen safely, a consultant in respiratory conditions from Addenbrookes, and a local pharmacist. As well as medical speakers we also have visits from various organisations and local people including Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, Mike Petty who is a local historian, East Anglian Air Ambulance and a local sweet shop owner who talked about the history of sweets! When it hasn’t been possible to arrange a speaker, we play games and have trivia quizzes. A group favourite has been our days out. These have included Springfields Shopping and Garden Centre near Spalding and a trip to Saffron Walden, with lunch at the pub run by Jamie Oliver’s father. These were pre-Covid, but we hope to start our trips again next year.

24 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

In December we have our special Christmas lunch at a local venue. Previous years have included the High Flyer and Twentypence Garden Centre. To sum up, we are a very friendly and supportive group of people who all have one thing in common, we know that we are not alone in having a respiratory illness and there is always support when we need it. We like to have a laugh, have fun and enjoy ourselves whatever our circumstances. There is no joining fee or admission cost, just £1 to cover tea, coffee and biscuits (and homemade cakes!) and we have a raffle where members bring along an item, usually a box of biscuits or toiletries or such like. Tickets cost £1 a strip. If you would like more information, please contact Asthma and Lung UK on 0300 222 5800 who will put you in touch with one of our members locally. Otherwise just come and take a look at the next meeting at the Ely Beet Club. We look forward to seeing you!

The Ely bereavement support group day is changing from a Friday afternoon to a Thursday morning, from January 2024. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday mornings of the month from 10.30am to 12pm. The first meeting will take be on Thursday 4 January followed by Thursday 18 January. In Ely Methodist Church rooms. Access is from Chapel Street through the door down the side of the church or through the blue gates at the back of St Mary’s St. carpark (free car parking for 2 hours). Anyone who is finding it difficult to come to terms with their bereavement and would like to share refreshments with others in the same situation. There is also opportunity to talk on a one-to-one basis with one of the Cruse-trained volunteers. If you would like to talk to the Group’s co-ordinator before attending, that can be arranged (call our helpline 01223 633536) The group mainly serves those who live in Ely and the surrounding villages but anyone who can travel to the sessions is welcome. Please be assured of a very warm welcome. We are a friendly and caring group and members are very supportive of one another. The group provides a place to talk about difficulties and experiences in bereavement. Further meeting dates to follow in the January/February issue of Ely i magazine.

ST MARY'S CHURCH

BEREAVEMENT CAFÉ St Mary’s Church in Ely currently hosts a Bereavement Café, usually on the last Wednesday of each month, where anyone who has suffered the loss of someone close to them either recently or longer ago is invited to drop in between 10am and 12 noon, have a free cup of tea or coffee and find a warm welcome and people to chat to. Trained listeners will be on hand if needed, or just come and meet other people who are also trying to navigate their way through loss and grief – it can help to talk to those who have had similar experiences. Dates for the end of the year have had to be tweaked to fit around Christmas, so while the November Café will run on the 29th (the last Wednesday of the month), there will be no Café in December – instead we will run two Cafés in January, on the 3rd and the 31st. The Café takes place in the church building on St Mary’s Street in Ely. All are welcome. 26 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Other times fellow sufferers can provide ideas, solutions and fresh perspectives to problems that you are experiencing. If the living nightmare that is cancer is an unwelcome visitor at your door (or someone close to you) - you can be sure of a warm welcome at Oasis Ely Cancer Hub." Oasis Ely Cancer Hub is celebrating twenty-two months since it opened its doors. During this time, we have welcomed thirty new members. A cancer journey is not easy. There is often so much to learn, understand, and endure. Oasis Ely Cancer Hub aims to provide a welcoming, free, caring and safe space for all those affected by cancer in our community. Two of our members wanted to share the following thoughtswith you. Chris: "That day when you are ushered into a small consulting room and a white coated doctor tells you that you have cancer, will live with you for the rest of your life (however long, or unexpectedly short, that life may now become). When I learned that I had inoperable cancer it came to me like a thunder bolt from the blue. There were so many questions that rushed into my mind, and it wasn’t immediately obvious to me where to even begin to look for answers. Macmillan Cancer Support and Maggie’s at Addenbrookes have both literally provided me with a lifeline. But however much professional support and advice these worthwhile organisations provide, another aspect of dealing with all the alien changes is sharing the journey with fellow patients. Ely and its neighbourhood were blessed when a cancer support group, Oasis Ely Cancer Hub, was founded by a lady called ‘Angels’. A unique bond can grow between fellow patients. Many of us talk with a level of honest ‘straight to the point’ that I would never have previously used with people I had only recently met. Once you wake up to the realisation that the bleak term ‘end of life’ may now apply to you, things change. There can also be quite a wicked black humour. Angels and Oasis provide support, friendship, and advice. I cannot begin to find sufficient words to praise them. Sometimes it's an answer to that ‘silly’ question you haven’t liked to bother the medical professionals with.

32 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Brian: "I discovered Oasis by accident at a truly crucial part of my life. I saw a Facebook post which was for a quick change of venue. At the time I had been on my battle with the ‘big C' for 14 months when fate dealt me another blow. My wife of 30 years passed away suddenly. I was suddenly left alone with people who said "you can phone me anytime" I am sure they all meant well and would have been there. But it wasn't a telephone voice I needed so much as new friends. Oasis gave me a purpose and some great new friends who have all experienced cancer in some way. I now look forward to Friday’s Oasis meetings, I would even say my week starts on a Friday now. I can only thank Angels and Oasis for almost being heaven sent at the perfect time in my life. " Get in touch: oasiselycancerhub@gmail.com

Our weekly tea dances increased in popularity, and we had a membership of approximately 50 people. There was the opportunity of applying for a grant from ECDC, this had to be for a new project. We decided to start a line dance class in 2014, this has also been popular, and we now run two weekly classes on Thursday evenings, Improvers and Advanced.

We are a friendly, social group living up to our name of ‘Dancing for Fun’. Over the years we have taken many of our members to the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, to Potters Leisure Resorts at both Hopton and Five Lakes, and we have visit planned to Thursford for the Christmas show in December. We also run themed dance evenings on Fridays throughout the year for Valentines, Halloween and Christmas, with a musician playing live music. It has been proven that dance is good for fitness, mental health, and making new friends. If you feel our group might be for you, give us a ring, or just come along on a Tuesday, for a free afternoon, a cup of tea, a chat, and maybe even a dance!

It's never too late!

EAST CAMBS DANCING FOR FUN Our dance group was formed in 2009 and was supported by Living Sport for three years to promote healthy living for the over 50s. After we were no longer under the umbrella of Living Sport in 2012, we decided to continue by forming a committee, and applying for funding from Waitrose, Lloyds Bank and Living Sport. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 35

Tig-a-Tack Tig Welding Service ELY WILDSPACE Ivy is a common, evergreen native that is found in the Wildspace. It climbs walls and trees with specialised hairs which help it stick to surfaces. Ivy is accused of strangling trees, but actually does not harm them and is important in supporting wildlife during the autumn and winter. Mature ivy, which has oval leaves and woody stems, flowers in the autumn. The yellow-green flowers are not conspicuous and appear in dome-shaped clusters called umbels. Their nectar and pollen are the main autumn food source for flower-visiting insects during this period. These include bees, flies, wasps, butterflies and moths. One of the bees that is commonly seen feeding on ivy flowers is the aptly-named ivy bee. It looks a bit like a honey bee having an orange-brown, hairy thorax, and distinct black and yellow stripes on its abdomen. This was first described as new to science in 1993 and was first recorded in Britain in Dorset in 2001. Since then they have spread north. They nest in what can be large aggregations, each female building a small nest in the soil. Ivy’s black berry-like fruits have a high fat content and are fed on by a birds including wood pigeons, thrushes and blackcaps. Ivy provides nest sites for birds as well as shelter for them, bats and other small mammals and invertebrates.

CITY OF ELY COUNCILUpdate

BY-ELECTION RESULT Following a by-election in September, Cllr Ross Trent was elected to join the council in Ely North Ward.

City of Ely Council Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, Cambs CB7 4EG Phone: 01353 661016 Fax: 01353 667057

Radio for sponsorship and support. The Mayor and Mayoress of Ely, Cllr Chris Phillips and Lady Mayoress, Mary Rone opened the event and browsed the stalls, engaging with traders.

Cllr Trent said: “For years now, I’ve lived and worked in Ely. It’s a great place to bring up a family and to enjoy the natural environment on our doorsteps. My wife and I have a daughter who attends a local primary school. I’d like to be able to give something back to the community which has given me and my family so much. As a self-employed cabinet maker who has built his own business from scratch, I really enjoy working for local customers, getting hands-on with projects that have a practial purpose and seeing an end product that’s well put together and useful. I hope to be able to bring that same practical focus, care and businesslike approach to the City of Ely Council.“ NEWS FROM VISIT ELY

Ely’s Apple and Harvest Fayre 2023 was a resounding success this year with over 6000 visitors attending the event. This year, with the kind permission of Ely Cathedral, we were able to use Cross Green. This allowed over 80 traders to showcase their produce and crafts. From the moment the event opened at 10 am, the crowds were there in abundance, and the footfall just grew throughout the whole day. There was a fabulous mix of charity/food and craft stalls, and each and every stall had an ‘Apple’ theme which made the day extra special. Visit Ely would like to express their thanks to Thorlabs, Watergull Orchards, and Spotted in Ely 40 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Apple and Spoon races, and longest peel certainly drew a crowd with the longest peel this year of over 3m. The folk dancers joined in the community fun, and the cast of Bugsy Malone also performed in the arena. Anna Bennett, Manager of Visit Ely and Tourism commented, “it’s been quite a week for Ely, from Oliver Cromwell’s House winning an award for the Visit England Hidden Gem tourist attraction, to a hugely successful Apple and Harvest Fayre. We are very proud to be able to organise this annual event and as we promised, this year was bigger and better than ever before. I would like to thank the team behind the scenes, and all our traders in attendance for making it an extra special day!” One trader said “We would just like to send you all a personal note to say thank you for this Saturdays Apple Harvest Fayre, we had a fantastic day trading and meeting so many new people, we sincerely hope all the other traders that attended had a good day like we did. As you know we do many markets across the region and please pat yourselves on the back as the organisation from start to finish was spot on. Thank you again and keep it going”. Chilli Freaks.

ELY’S WINDOW WANDERLAND 3rd-5th November 2023

Now in our fourth year, The Stained Glass Museum and Babylon ARTS, working with the community of Ely will be hosting Window Wanderland 2023 The Window Wanderland festival has now been a part of UK communities since 2015, with over 25,000 windows decorated across the nation in hundreds of events. Ely has been part of this for the past 3 years and will be hosting its fourth event with the backing of The Stained Glass Museum and Babylon ARTS, to encourage Ely residents and businesses to transform the streets by making an illuminated window display as part of the Window Wanderland event this November. Window Wanderland is a fun family-friendly event that sees communities create illuminated displays in windows. People can use the street-facing windows of their home, business, school, nursery, car, shop, or even their front door. A map showing the locations of illuminated window displays is then created to form an after-dark walking trail and community event, transforming local streets into galleries. This year, Ely’s Window Wanderland will take place over three evenings - Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th, and Sunday 5th November 2023. Everyone is encouraged to get involved by illuminating their street-facing windows between 5pm and 9pm, creating an after-dark walking trail of glowing windows. We are conscious of the ongoing energy crisis however, and encourage participants to use solar or battery powered lights where they can to illuminate their windows after dark. Jasmine Allen, Director & Curator at The Stained Glass Museum commented: “We were so impressed at the amazing and creative window displays the people of Ely created for last year’s event, and we would love to get even more people involved in this year’s event. Taking part is free and the event over the last three years has been so enjoyable for children and adults alike!”

If you’re planning on transforming a window for Ely Window Wanderland please sign up on our Window Wanderland event page: www. windowwanderland.com/event/ely-cambs-2023/ so that we can create a map of participants on our website. Then get planning your window display! If you have any questions, please refer them to: elywindowwanderland@gmail. com, also you can follow us @WindowWanderEly on social media to keep up to date. Thank you to the City of Ely Council for their generous grant which allows events such as Window Wanderland to continue. SANTA ON TOUR! In the run up to Christmas, the Rotary Club of Ely will be touring the streets of Ely with their usual sleigh and, of course, Father Christmas. The club will be supported by the Inner Wheel Club of Ely and the Rotary Club of Ely Hereward together with volunteers, some being from a number of local charities and clubs. A door-to-door collection will be taken to provide funds to support charities, good causes and national and international disasters and projects. The sleigh will start its journey at 6 p.m. and travel along the streets, approximately in the order shown on the routes which will be published towards the end of November. The last street will be reached by around 8pm. Some routes will be changed again slightly this year so do not assume you will be visited on the same day as last year. The routes, once published, will be available on the website www.elyrotary.co.uk where an alphabetical list of streets will also be found. In addition, the information will be on the Facebook page of the Rotary Club of Ely, Cambridgeshire. Through the Tracker link on the website or the Facebook page, you can even see the exact position of the sleigh on the night. For further details about Rotary, check out their website at www.elyrotary.co.uk or for the Christmas collection, especially if you would like to help, please email mikeaxford@hotmail.com.
