Dear Readers

Welcome to the March/April edition. I’m writing this with my wall thermometer reading 14 degrees outside! Let’s hope it continues to stay warm for our distributors :)

I have been very grateful for some of the positive feedback since our last issue. It’s lovely to hear that people enjoy reading the magazine and also that people are responding to advertisements from our businesses.

Thank you to Ely City Council for using the magazine to share information with the parish. We now have a regular door to door delivery in Stuntney and often in Wicken thanks to the proactive folk volunteering there. I currently take a number of magazines around the local area for people that don’t live in Ely and leave a good amount at Ely Station, but if there are any readers in Little Downham, Chettisham, Coveney, Wardy Hill, Pymoor, Little Thetford, Witchford or Haddenham that would like a copy more readily available I’m very happy to allocate some to those villages. We just need a volunteer on the ground to take a bundle of magazines and take them to a central point for people to pick up.

Do get in touch if you’d like to help - editor@elyimagazine.com

Happy Easter!

Bridget

ELY COLLEGE SECURES £2960 ‘LOVE ROWING’ GRANT TO BUILD ON THEIR SUCCESSFUL ‘CHANCE TO ROW’ PROGRAMME.

In partnership with the Isle of Ely Rowing Club (IOERC), Ely College is pleased to announce that it has been successful in securing just under three thousand pounds of funding to continue and extend the reach of its successful rowing programmes.

“Working across Meridian Trust, we hope to extend our ‘Chance to Row’ programme to more schools in the region. We already have strong links with The Boat Race Company, the university teams and East Anglia Youth Rowing; the latter also being successful in this round of Love Rowing grant bids. We look forward to teaming up with them and sharing good practice.”

Building on the successes of the last three years which has seen over 250 students ‘take up the oars’, this award will not only give more student the chance to experience rowing for the first time on our stunning local waterways, but also establish new programmes and partnerships. No longer just a taster, they hope to incorporate more competitive aspects as well as Holiday Camps, a Post-16 intensive course and a summertime Trust wide rowing regatta.

“This successful bid will allow us to extend our reach further” commented Jason Coe, Assistant Principal at Ely College. “With a view to developing competency and longer-term engagement, we’ll welcome our Bishop Laney Sixth Form students to join us, with the potential for them to become youth leaders.”

Love Rowing, the charitable foundation for British Rowing, announced funding for 25 projects across the UK, with a focus of bringing more people into the sport of rowing. Sally Corander from Love Rowing commented: "This year we are supporting more projects than ever before! These funded initiatives will provide young people from lowincome household families, ethnically diverse community groups and people with disabilities the opportunities to learn to row and enjoy the benefits the sport brings.” Love Rowing received a record number of very strong applications for the grant round which made the review process extremely difficult.

Jason Coe also commented on behalf of the College and IOERC: “Both me and Richard Maxey are delighted to have secured this further funding to broaden opportunities and exposure to rowing across East Cambs. Love Rowing’s support will enable us to give a diverse range of students a chance to engage in a sport not only that has competitive pathways but undoubtably brings about social, emotional and mental wellbeing benefits. Whilst the college programme continues to grow, this bid allows us to share our experience across our wider community, something crucial to all of us at Ely College.”

SPRING PROGRAMME

At Ely Museum this spring, there are lots of opportunities to learn something new. With a programme of evening talks and craft workshops, ideal for beginners and for those with more experience under their belts alike.

Inspired by the museum’s newest temporary exhibition “Burial of a Princes? Treasures from a Saxon Cemetery in Ely” join us for three expert talks this spring to find out more about what we can learn from skeletons, the of role women and their use of botanics and hearing from an archaeologist who worked on the excavation this exhibition is based on. Taking place in the museum’s beautiful Aedwen Room, these evening talks will be the perfect opportunity to find out more about Ely’s Saxon past, especially in this anniversary year as we commemorate the 1350th anniversary of Etheldreda founding the religious house in Ely.

Also this spring, enjoy three hands on, practical small group workshops exploring traditional crafts: willow weaving, calligraphy and Coptic book binding. Leave each workshop with your new creation, or skill.

Tickets are already selling fast, so do book online early to avoid disappointment at: www.elymuseum.org.uk/whatson, our first workshops started in February and continue on through the spring:

11 March 2023 – Full Day Modern Calligraphy Workshop

13 March 2023 – Botanical Women: An Evening Talk by Katie Childs

11 April 2023 - Bringing Skeletons Out Of The Closet, What We Can Learn About Life From Death: An Evening Talk by Dr Trish Biers

8 May 2023 - Burial of a Princess? Excavations at Westfield, Ely: An Evening Talk by Dr Sam Lucy

17 June 2023 – Full Day Coptic Book Binding Workshop

Garden Equipment Hints & Tips

As Spring is just around the corner and those with a garden will likely be getting their machinery out for the first time in months, local business, Fenland Spirit Services have some timely reminders for you.

YOUR ELECTRIC OR BATTERY MOWER

This is probably the easiest mower to start with as it mostly involves a plug and a switch. Before use this year, we advise you check your electric lead doesn’t have any nasty nicks in it and is safely connected at both the plug and mower ends, if not we can usually re-wire or re-cable your machine and PAT test it for safety.

Ensure your battery is fully charged and there is no evidence of Verdigris (green residue) on the connections. As with all mowers we advise avoiding stones, twigs & immovable objects, this is particularly important with an electric mower as they are generally not as heavy duty as a petrol machine.

We can help you with servicing & repairs, welding & fabrication. Just get in touch on 0775 383 6499 or email fenlandspiritservices@gmail.com

18 Day and 30 Day Nutritional Resets

Hi, I'm Angela! You may have met me at Fresh, the Hive, the Poleshed or even Littleport Leisure Centre - where I teach various fitness sessions. As much as I love working out, exercise is just a small part of overall health. The foundation for maintaining long term health lays in the way you fuel your body. What you eat has a direct impact on how you feel, and therefore what you do and how you do it. With the right nutrition (even if you are "allergic" to exercise) you can maintain good health.

This is why I have been so passionate about guiding people through my science-backed nutritional reset programmes for the last 8+ years. Before I started I was exhausted, perimenopausal and out of control with my eating (and moods). Now, I am energised, happy and have a renewed lust for life. At the age of 51, I feel better than I ever have!

So, if you are feeling less than yourself, working out all the time without seeing results, or your moods are out of control, I'd love you to experience the benefits of my nutritional

I'll show you how to combine my all natural, science-backed meal replacements and supplements, with your favourite whole foods to give you a foundation for long term health. No artificial sweeteners, colours or flavourings. Non GMO, gluten free, soy free and

ELY & DISTRICT MODEL RAILWAY CLUB

Ely and District Model Railway Club Ltd has, over the last 45 years, sometimes been constrained in the permanent set up of layouts, the ability to have work benches and restricted access times compromised by the need to put everything away at the end of a Club night. At one time we met in rooms at the back of an Ely pub and then, a bit more recently, in a small upstairs room accessed by a very narrow and steep staircase in a social club in a nearby town. Our Membership was limited by these constraints.

We found a brilliant solution some 10 years ago, when a friendly farmer allowed us to build a purpose-built workshop/ clubroom in a redundant agricultural barn he leased near Ely. The premises are secure and some distance from a main road but accessible to members 24/7 sub-ject to normal Health & Safety constraints. For security reasons, we don’t publicise the loca-tion of our Club premises, but introduce potential new Members with a pre-arranged guided tour.

It was with a huge leap of faith to invest most of our Club funds in the construction of a sub-stantial new Clubroom within the space we were offered. In effect, we would occupy about a quarter of the overall building’s internal space. To make it ideal for our needs required fully insulated stud walls and ceiling to the main workroom (some 35ft by 25ft), separately metered electrical circuits with ample power points, decent lighting and heating. What joy it was to have a warm, well-lit facility with a small kitchen and 24/7 level access at last!

Club meetings and attendance quickly expanded on both Tuesday evenings and Thursday morn-ings (and small groups often meet at other times too). This wonderful space allowed us to erect Thurston (until that layout was sold) and then build its successor Wickham Market, a 22ft x 12ft OO “roundy-roundy” (which we are close to completing) along with other Club layouts in both N and O.

As Membership rose it was then loosely capped at 25, ensuring that adequate space for a variety of model railway activities could then be undertaken in relative comfort. In 2022 a change of tenancy of the farm meant that we had to negotiate with a new Landlord, a complex process, but fortunately one with a very successful outcome. What is even more pleasing is that our new Landlord is equally amenable and has even allowed us to expand our Clubroom into an adjacent space - effectively almost doubling our Clubroom’s floor space. Once again, we decided to ‘splash some cash’ converting this draughty area to our require-ments. We erected new stud walls/dry lining, fully insulated the structure and fitted LED over-head lighting and, of course, ample power points. Now that is completed, we are creating wide doorways to link it to our existing space. By the way, the LED strip lights are so good (and use such little power) that we’ll be fitting the same kind in the “old” Clubroom to replace ageing fluorescent tubes at the first opportunity!

In summary, we have a progressive and friendly Model Railway Club, with fantastic newly ex-panded Club premises! We are looking forward in anticipation to the coming year with new projects mapped out. Importantly, our financial position means that our (modest) Club Mem-bership fees cover the rental costs of our expanded Clubroom. This extra space means we are now able to welcome new Members into this fantastic hobby of ours. This is a great opportunity to learn new skills and become involved in existing and new projects. You can see details about us on our website www.elymrc. org.uk and on our Ely Model Railway Club Facebook page.

So, if you are located in our catchment of East Cambridgeshire/West Suffolk and interested in joining then simply contact us on the email below. We’d be delighted to meet you!

Cathedral celebrates 1350 years of Ely’s foundation

2023 marks 1350 years since the foundation of Ely and the Cathedral and city will be celebrating this significant anniversary with a year long programme of events, exhibitions, creative storytelling, art, music and worship across the city.

LONDON WELSH MALE VOICE CHOIR JOIN WATERBEACH BRASS AT THE CATHEDRAL FOR LONG AWAITED CONCERT

In the days before Covid, the Rotary Club of Ely was planning to put on a concert featuring the London Welsh Male Voice Choir and the Waterbeach Brass Band in our magnificent Cathedral However, as we all had to stay at home, the concert had to be cancelled.

Now that we are allowed to get together again, Ely Rotary is very pleased to resurrect this concert. The London Welsh Male Voice Choir is very well known, and could be seen at the start of the Six Nations Rugby season singing the national anthems. Whilst Waterbeach Brass Band may not have the same international standing as the choir, it is very well known among the brass band community as well as locally.

The Cathedral have recently unveiled a visual interpretation around the life of Etheldreda, highlighting the four key stages of her life from East Anglian Princess, Queen of Northumbria, Abbess of the Monastery here and Patron Saint of Ely.

The event was attended by The Bishop of Ely, The Bishop of Huntingdon, The Dean of Ely and The Mayor of Ely (Image attached).

A spokesperson for Ely Cathedral said: “Ely Cathedral stands in the very heart of this community. As a Christian place of worship since 673, its heritage, longevity and continuity has been present for 1350 years and from which the city of Ely was established and continues to flourish.”

These anniversary celebrations have been organised in partnership with Visit Ely, The Ely Museum and The Stained Glass Museum who are also hosting various events and activities throughout the year.

For further information please see www.elycathedral.org and www.visitely.org.uk

This concert, which is raising money for the Arthur Rank Hospice is a wonderful opportunity to hear music on a very grand scale. Tickets are available from the Ely Cathedral website: https://www.elycathedral.org/events

COULD YOU BE A PARISH COUNCILLOR?

What is a Parish Council?

A parish council is a local authority that makes decisions on behalf of the people in the parish. It is the level of government closest to the community, with the county and city authority above it in the hierarchy.

As the authority closest to the people, we are invariably the first port of call people go to with their concerns or ideas. For this reason, we are a vital part of any community.

City of Ely Council Mission Statement

The Council will provide the leadership for Ely to be a successful, attractive place, where people want to live, work and visit.

The City of Ely Council aims to improve the quality of life for the residents of Ely by ensuring that it is a desirable, thriving and sustainable place in which to live. We do this in a number of ways:

• We provide a democratic and representative voice for the community.

• Where we provide services, we manage them to a good quality standard, in an efficient, effective and responsive way, at an affordable cost.

• Where others provide services, the City of Ely Council endeavours to ensure that they deal with them effectively and in accordance with the wishes of the community.

• We work with residents, other local authorities and other service providers, businesses

34 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com City of Ely Council Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, Cambs CB7 4EG Phone: 01353 661016 Fax: 01353 667057

and voluntary organisations with the aim of achieving a safe, healthy, prosperous and sustainable community.

• We value all people irrespective of their background and seek to ensure that we act in an inclusive manner in all our actions and encourage our suppliers and partners to act in the same way.

Overview of the City of Ely Council

There are four tiers of Local Government, each with different responsibilities. The City of Ely Council is the fourth and local tier, with an important role to play in promoting the City and outlying villages, representing its interests and supporting the work of different groups in the community.

East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC) is the third tier and is responsible for services including housing and environmental services. ECDC is also responsible for strategic planning policies for all development (including housing and employment sites) via its Local Plan. As the second tier, Cambridgeshire County Council’s (CCC) responsibilities include highways, relating to both roads and footways (pavements), education, health and social services, public rights of way and libraries. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority is the first tier and its responsibilities include delivering new homes, boosting growth in the region and reviewing 16+ skills provision in the area.

Residents elect fifteen City Councillors every four years. The Council elects a Chairman and ViceChairman annually at the Annual Council Meeting in May. The Chairman and Vice-Chairman also hold the position of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The Mayor receives an annual allowance to cover expenses. The Council reports to the electorate at the Annual Parish Council meeting in April. Councillors are unpaid. We commit our time to improving Ely and maintaining it as an attractive and sustainable place in which to live, visit and do business. Elections were last held in May 2019. The next elections will be in May 2023 and following that in 2027.

The City Council owns property and land in the City and gains some income from some of it. We hold these assets on behalf of the community and are responsible for maintaining their value.

The Full Council meets every 6 weeks on a Monday (actual dates are published on the Council website and on the noticeboard at the City Council Offices). The Full Council and Committee meetings are open to the public with a period set aside for members of the public to address the Full Council.

The Council runs its business through Committees. Working Groups comprising councillors and members of the public support the work of Committees.

The Council works to its Standing Orders and Financial Regulations. These lay down the rules by which we operate and conduct our business. We have based our Standing Orders on a model prepared by the National Association of Local Councils (NALC). We also expect City Councillors to adhere to the Council’s Code of Conduct also adopted from NALC. Committees and Working Groups work to terms of reference agreed in Council or in executive committees.

The City of Ely Council’s Main Areas of Responsibility:

The Council has the following responsibilities:

• Managing the Cemetery and the City of Ely Council’s Recreation areas;

• Managing Christmas Lights programme and the Annual Switch On Event;

• Managing the assets of The Maltings, the Sessions House, the Maltings Cottage and Oliver Cromwell’s House;

• Managing the Shared Equity Housing Scheme;

• Managing the CCTV system serving Ely;

• Managing the City of Ely Environmental assets (street furniture, and our trees) and Ely floral displays;

• Managing an auditing programme which will contribute to consultations, eg traffic surveys, highways, street cleanliness.

Why become a Parish Councillor?

If you’ve never been to a parish council meeting before, you may be forgiven for thinking that parish councillors are a group of (probably older) people who meet now and then in a draughty village hall.

If, however, you live in a community when something ‘big’ has or is about to happen, you’ll know that’s when people in the community need support and guidance and it’s the parish council that you turn to.

As a parish councillor, you become someone your community will look to for help, guidance and support, a community leader with the power to influence decisions for the benefit of the people you serve.

Seeing your community change for the better as a result of decisions you have helped make, is something that will give you a sense of achievement and pride.

www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 35

What decisions do Parish Councils make?

Probably the most common topics that parish councils get involved with are planning matters (they are statutory consultees), crime prevention, managing open spaces and campaigning for and delivering better services and facilities.

On their own, parish councils have limited powers to make decisions.

How much time does it take up?

In addition to the regular meetings, some councillors have specific duties (portfolios) requiring them to attend other meetings to represent the council, e.g. acting as a representative on an outside body, or helping develop a new project for the community.

Such meetings don’t happen often, so it’s not going to take over your life.

How long does a parish councillor serve for?

Once elected, parish councillors sit on the council for a term of four years. If they then want to stay in the post, they can stand for re-election.

Am I eligible to be a Parish Councillor?

To be able to become a councillor for City of Ely Council, you must:

• be an elector of the parish, or;

• for the whole of the previous 12 months have occupied (as owner or tenant) land or other premises in the parish, or;

• during the previous 12 months have worked in the parish (as your principal or only place of work), or;

• for the whole of the previous 12 months lived in the parish or within three miles of the parish boundary.

• be a least 18 years old.

FROM RICHARD MORGAN, MAYOR OF ELY

Now that January has passed it’s wonderful to see how quickly the days are stretching out and to see snowdrops and aconites and the early signs of spring in our gardens – despite a few days of cold temperatures and fog!

As Mayor I have continued to meet people and organisations. I was disappointed to hear of the vandalism done to our shops over the Christmas & New Year Holidays so I was pleased to welcome Joanne Andow to a recent Full Council Meeting to talk to councillors about the Community Safety Partnership.

Recently, the Mayoress and I visited the new exhibition at Ely Museum ‘Burial of a Princess?’; and welcomed the new priest in charge of St Peter’s Church, The Revd Ann Williams, at a Eucharistic Service led by The Ven. Richard Harlow, Archdeacon of Huntingdon & Wisbech. I was asked to cut the ribbon for the new houses at Willow Woods, Lynn Road; and attended the launch of St Etheldreda 1350 Anniversary in the cathedral. (photo on page 31)

In the last edition of this magazine I suggested that aspiring councillors with their eyes on the local elections fixed for 4th May might like to attend a Full Council Meeting or any of the other committee meetings we hold nearly every week to see and hear of the work we do on your behalf. All politics are local - this phrase encapsulates the principle that a politician’s success is directly tied to his ability to understand and influence the issues of his constituents. Politicians must appeal to the simple, mundane and everyday concerns of those who elect them into office. According to this principle, those personal issues, rather than big and intangible ideas, are often what voters care most about.

ELY WILDSPACE

Scrub, weeds and messy edges are wonderful for wildlife!

Our understanding of what nature needs to thrive is changing. What we have traditionally thought of as untidy and weedy turns out to be excellent habitat for wildlife. Ely Wildspace planted the hedge along the riverside to protect the 'lapwing' meadow from dogs, and this has become a wonderful mix of hawthorn and bramble which is good for hedgerow birds such as the lesser whitethroat.

The woodland between Springhead Lane and the West Pit is not tidy but had breeding nightingales last summer – an uncommon secretive bird that likes impenetrable scrub. Springhead Lane has banks of brambles that provide cover for nesting birds and act as nurseries for tree seedlings (some planted by Ely Wildspace) protecting them from being nibbled by deer. The bramble in the adjacent Springhead Lane meadow has hosted grasshopper warblers, a once common bird now sadly in sharp decline.

Bramble flowers support many butterflies and the fruit feeds birds in autumn. Even nettles are a valuable source of nectar for insects and their leaves are the food source for a number of butterflies and moths.

East Ely Common is unmown throughout the spring and early summer but has a variety of wildflowers, including cowslips and greenwinged orchids. The flowers in turn provide nectar for the solitary bees that have made use of the bee hotels on the edge of the meadow as a repository for their eggs and grubs.

So these mixed untidy features are not only highways for mammals and insects to move through the landscape, connecting meadows, woodland and wetlands, but are valuable habitats in themselves.

YOUR INVITATION TO - ELY MASONIC HALL OPEN DAY

Often accused of being Secretive and self-serving, Freemasonry has abandoned its traditional stance of no comment reflecting a more open and transparent organisation.

How do they describe themselves?

Freemasonry is a unique members’ organisation, which has thrived for over 300 years it professes no political or religious affiliations. Who are Freemasons? Modern Freemasonry draws members of any religion, culture or background.

Is it only for men?

No, women’s Freemasonry operates in parallel with Men’s and both have similar objectives, rules and the organisations cooperate with each other.

Why do people join?

People join Freemasonry for many different reasons, some join for the friendships they will make that last a lifetime. Members meet people who are different to themselves, not only different ages but with radically different life experiences and interests, drawn together by common experience through Freemasonry. Members are, and have been for over three centuries, drawn from all walks of life. From Captains of industry and chief executives to manual labourers and forklift truck drivers, in Lodges you will find people with a wealth of different outlooks from all races, religions and backgrounds.

What drives the emphasis on charitable giving?

Freemasons are taught to look after those less fortunate than themselves, charity (whether fundraising or volunteering time) is a key component of Freemasonry, yes we support our local communities and good causes as well as larger scale projects within counties, national and internationally.

Is it just about giving then?

As important as this is, there is much more to being a Freemason and Importantly Freemasons have a huge amount of fun along the way.

Is that fun only for Freemasons?

Although only members can attend meetings, we are family and friend inclusive in Social Events. Most Lodges operate a very active social program, which is open to non-members to attend. This is a great way for interested parties and prospective members (and their families) to see for themselves whether they would enjoy Freemasonry.

On April 22nd 2023 the Ely Freemasons have an Open Day where anyone can visit, chat to men and women Freemasons, learn about what support is ongoing for local good causes and even take a guided tour of the Masonic Lodge Rooms where aspects of what can be seen will be explained. More information is available from elyfreemasons@gmail.com or visit: www.cambridgeshirefreemasons.org.uk

BREAD BY

MICRO BAKERY LAUNCHES THIS MONTH

A new microbakery is opening in Ely and aims to bring the magic of sourdough to its customers.

The start-up, run by bread boss Neil Adcock from his converted kitchen and back garden in Back Hill, launches on 27th March.

Passionate about quality, Neil has been refining his recipes for the past year and will start sharing the highs and lows of the baking business via Facebook in the run-up to the launch.

Formerly a research scientist, philosopher and graphic designer, Neil Adcock is passionate about quality and wherever possible, is using local and organic ingredients. He will launch with four core loaves – The Don, Pumpernickel's Cousin, The Bastard and The Umami Loaf – a mix of the classic and unique. In addition, each month he will be adding speciality loaves and sweet creations that can be ordered alongside the core bakes.

Baking days will be Wednesdays and Fridays. Customers can pre-order directly from his website from March 27 and pick up from his garden bakery in Back Hill. Timings will be flexible, because as a family man, he will sometimes need to collect his daughter from school!

Healthy You Day came to Ely Library on Thursday 19th January. People could book 1-1 health checks, and there were various stalls offering a variety of health-promoting activities. These included art therapy, physical activity classes (such as the charity, PosAbility), Reading Well for Mental Health, and children’s books focused on wellbeing.

Many of the activities, like the donation-only Yoga4Health classes I offer in Ely on a Friday morning, come under the banner of Social Prescribing. These include any activity that supports people’s mental or physical health, and mitigate loneliness and social isolation. Many people feel unwell due to non-medical reasons, so social prescribing supports them to learn new skills that include self-care and more confidence to actively manage their own health and adopt healthier behaviours.

A super resource showcased at the event was the RCE Wellbeing Hub, run and funded by the NHS. It offers many wellbeing courses in person in Cambridge and Peterborough, but also online and they are all free of charge. See www.cpft.nhs.uk/rec-wellbeing-hub

Burial of a Princess?

Treasures from a Saxon Cemetery in Ely

On a cold winter’s day in 2006, archaeologists discovered the grave of a young woman, buried with beautiful treasures. Cambridge Archaeological Unit had been brought in by Taylor Woodrow Developments Ltd to excavate at a site in Ely, in advance of housing development.

The archaeologists found an Anglo-Saxon cemetery, dated to the late seventh century. Two of the graves contained beautiful items such as jewellery.

Ely Museum is excited to now be able to display the grave goods from the two female burials for the first time. The exhibition will showcase the stunning objects and explore what they can tell us about who these people were and how they may have related to Etheldreda.

The exhibition runs from 21st January – 18th June 2023 and admission is included with a museum ticket or annual pass.

Alongside the exhibition, there will be a series of talks and events for the whole family to enjoy.

PL ANNING HAS STARTED FOR THE ARMED FORCES DAY ON CROSS GREEN, ELY - 24th June 2023

VisitEly, with RBL supporting, are organising this years Armed Forces Day event on Cross Keys green on Saturday 24th June 2023, 0930 -1630.

ELY COMMUNITY LUNCHES DISTRIBUTE FOOD AND COMPANY.

Over the Winter months a small committee of members in Ely and its surrounds had been planning a “splendid spread”. This is certainly what they provided. On Christmas Eve they delivered over sixty meals in the city and out among the villages and waterways of our frozen District. On Christmas Day a “sit down meal” of five courses was served at three venues across the City and folk were helped to attend.

In all over 120 guests sat down with the volunteers for a lunch and company on this special of days. It was made special not only by the food provided and prepared by a group of generous suppliers, caters and donators but by those volunteers who gave their time to spend it with individuals who might otherwise have be alone on Christmas Day.

There was live music, a visit from Father Christmas with his elves and a chance to hear the King’s speech. This was all made possible by the generosity of those who donated money to “buy a lunch” and others who contributed along with their own purchase of this special Christmas meal. A big thank you to everyone for making this event possible. It is certainly hoped to repeat it next Christmas.

The Ely Community Lunches Committee.

Have a Go or Just Come to Watch!

"I went to the open day at Little Thetford on Saturday and had a really nice time. I had no idea I would be able to make something to take home. It was a great event and the members were so friendly and welcoming. Thank you for organising such an inclusive event which complete beginners could have a go at wood turning and pyrography.”

So said one of the visitors to the Ely Guild of Woodturners Hands-On Day in April 2019. The good news is that we will be holding another Hands-On Day on Saturday 22nd April 2023 between 10.00 am and 4.30 pm at Little Thetford Village Hall, CB6 3HG .

At our last event the hall was equipped with six lathes (four teaching & two demonstrating), a pyrography table and a great selection

of members’ work for people to see. Members of the public made spinning tops, dibbers, little vases and mushrooms; they were most impressed at then being able to pop over to the pyrography table and pyrograph their names onto the pieces themselves.

Woodturning is a craft that can be enjoyed by young and old alike, and it's great to see the surprised and happy looks on the faces of those who have had a go and come away with something that they have made all by themselves (under the expert eye of the tutor).

So come along and enjoy seeing skilled woodturners in action and have a go yourself. Entrance is free of charge.
