TIMELINE

DeLorean left General Motors in 1973 to form his company, the DeLorean Motor Company. A two-seat sports car prototype was shown in the mid-1970s called the DeLorean Safety Vehicle (DSV), with its body shell designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The car entered into production as the DeLorean. The car’s body distinctively used stainless steel and featured gull-wing doors. It was powered by the V6 engine developed by Peugeot, Renault and Volvo.

The DMC manufacturing plant began in Northern Ireland. The facility was located in Belfast.

1978

1975

John DeLorean founded the DeLorean Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan, on October 24, 1975.

1979

DeLorean showed the concept cars DMC-24 sedan sketch and DMC-44 to the public.

The first production car DMC-12 was completed on January 21, 1981. The concept car DMC-80 was mooted. The DeLorean DMC- 12 featured in the “Back to the Future” films as a time machine. DMC launched the plan of Low Volume DeLorean production.

DeLorean rebranding project launched.

1982

The founder John DeLorean was charged with conspiring cocaine into the US and arrested in October.

About 9,000 DeLoreans were made before the production halted in late December.

DMC filed for bankruptcy due to a lack of sufficient funds.

2006

Stephen Wynne founded DeLorean Museum as a part of the DeLorean facility.
