Lorsque nous nous sommes rencontrés une première fois dans le but d’organiser un concert autour des Folk Songs de Luciano Berio, nous n’aurions pu imaginer que ce projet grandirait au point de se concrétiser cinq ans plus tard par l’enregistrement du présent disque. Le travail de réécriture et parfois d’invention de nouveaux chants populaires par Berio nous a fait rechercher comme pendant une autre œuvre populaire que nous aimerions transcrire, retraduire pour l’ensemble à l’effectif particulier que nous sommes. Notre choix s’est porté rapidement sur les magnifiques Histoires naturelles de Maurice Ravel, tant la poésie des textes de Jules Renard nous saisit encore aujourd’hui.

Ravel ayant autorisé Manuel Rosenthal à réaliser une transcription pour grand orchestre que nous trouvions un peu grandiloquente, nous sommes partis à la recherche d’un « chasseur d’images » (pour reprendre le titre d’une des Histoires naturelles), qui saurait transcrire cette œuvre sans perdre cette fois son aspect intime et délicat.

Toute réécriture comporte un risque, Jules Renard n’ayant lui même pas souhaité assister à la création des mélodies de Ravel en 1907, mais nous espérons que vous serez comme nous séduits par le travail d’Arthur Lavandier qui restitue à merveille les timbres et accents si raffinés de Ravel.

par luca dupont-spirio « Un sujet qui, de tous les sujets, est bien le plus étranger à la musique ». Ainsi écrivait le critique Pierre Lalo – fils d’Édouard – après la création des Histoires naturelles, le 12 janvier 1907. Le sujet : voilà qui pose question aux musiciens en ce début du XXe siècle. La psychologie naissante, la critique sociale changent le rapport romantique à soi – « Je est un autre », dit déjà Rimbaud dans une lettre où il se rêve en « travailleur ». Le sentiment national et la puissance technique, héritages du XIXe siècle, fusionneront bientôt dans l’horreur de la Grande Guerre.

Les compositeurs, eux, gagnent des domaines préservés. Une mythologie pleine d’antiques ivresses, qui baigne la Psyché de Falla. Un réalisme sans enjeu sentimental, boudé par Lalo fils à l’audition des Histoires ravéliennes. Un répertoire populaire enfin, où chante la voix des indigènes occidentaux et des peuples lointains – de l’Auvergne à la Sicile, de l’Arménie à l’Azerbaïdjan dans les Folk Songs de Berio.

Le paysage instrumental se transforme également. Des ensembles nouveaux associent les sonorités pour elles-mêmes ; le timbre fait jeu égal avec ses grandes sœurs, la mélodie et l’harmonie. Lorsqu’il compose Psyché en 1924, Falla connaît la petite constellation d’œuvres vocales née une décennie plus tôt de cet esprit : rien qu’en 1912, le Pierrot Lunaire de Schoenberg, les Quatre Poèmes hindous de Maurice Delage et les Trois Poésies de la lyrique japonaise de Stravinsky, l’année suivante les Trois poèmes de Mallarmé de Ravel… Le compositeur andalou y fait écho dans cette partition sur un poème de Georges Jean-Aubry, à l’esthétique de laquelle il ne reviendra pas. Son quintette dominé par les incantations de la flûte unit également la harpe, le violon, l’alto et le violoncelle, nimbant la voix de résonances lascives. L’atmosphère sensuelle sied au texte, qui appelle Psyché à un éveil voluptueux malgré la fuite de son amant Cupidon. Créée le 9 février 1925 au palais de l’Alhambra à Grenade, l’œuvre prenait pour Falla l’allure d’un « petit concert de cour », ainsi décrit à la dédicataire, Madame Alvar : « Vous ne trouverez pas [ici] la musique véritable de la cour espagnole au début du dix-huitième siècle, mais […] ce que j’en ai rêvé. »

En 1964, dernière année de son mariage avec la mezzo Cathy Berberian, Berio écrit pour elle ses Folk Songs sur des airs de différents pays. La caution du « populaire » ouvre la voie chérie du lyrisme – notion diversement appréciée par ses confrères de Darmstadt, où les cours d’été réunissent l’avant-garde née sur les cendres de l’ancien monde. D’abord les pays de Cathy, avec deux mélodies américaines du chansonnier John Niles (1892-1980), Black Is the Colour – dont il existe une version traditionnelle – et I Wonder as I Wander, ainsi qu’une ode arménienne à la lune, Loosin yelav. Puis, entre une prière sicilienne et une plainte sarde, et après les allusions espiègles du Rossignolet français, la Ligurie natale, avec deux chansons en dialecte génois composées pendant les études, en 1947. Enfin, deux chants auvergnats en occitan, puisés chez Canteloube (1879-1957) et une romance d’Azerbaïdjan trouvée par Cathy sur un 78-tours, dont les paroles transcrites d’oreille demeurent opaques, sauf pour un couplet en russe comparant l’amour à un fourneau.

Le petit ensemble formé par la flûte, la clarinette, la harpe, l’alto, le violoncelle et les percussions, partout colore, compatit, plaisante, doublant son commentaire fantastique d’une empathie intemporelle.

Plus coutumier de ce lyrisme trouble et de ces textures grisantes, Ravel les convoque déjà dans son Introduction et Allegro de 1906, dans lequel José Bruyr voyait « un petit concerto de harpe auquel rien ne manque, pas même la cadence, et dont l’orchestre est réduit à un quatuor [à cordes], une flûte et une clarinette ». La même année, les Histoires naturelles, mélodies pour mezzo-soprano, adoptent un style plus déroutant. Composées sur cinq poèmes de Jules Renard issus d’un recueil homonyme, elles en épousent la douce ironie.

De la marche empesée du Paon à la course piteuse de la Pintade, du « cri diabolique » du premier aux accents criards de la seconde, et malgré la grâce du Cygne – reniée par la coda –, le langage ravélien présente des objets insolites. Langage fascinant mais surprenant pour les premiers auditeurs. La colère de certains trouve un écho poli dans le commentaire de Lalo. L’arrangement d’Arthur Lavandier, enregistré ici pour la première fois, exploite les couleurs de la version originale pour piano, dans une de ces instrumentations chambristes qu’affectionnait Ravel et ses contemporains.

Née dans le nord-est de l’Angleterre, la mezzo-soprano anglo-française Anna Stéphany étudie à la Guildhall School of Music and Drama de Londres et participe en 2006 à l’Académie du Festival d’Aix qui lui décerne la même année le titre de Lauréate HSBC. Ses nombreuses apparitions à l’opéra comprennent Proserpina dans Orfeo au Festival d’Aix, Rosina dans Il barbiere di Siviglia de Rossini au Théâtre du Châtelet, Médée de Charpentier au Chicago Opera Theatre, et Annio dans La clemenza di Tito au Bayerische Staatsoper de Munich et au Festival d’Aix-en-Provence sur la scène du Théâtre de l’Archevêché avant de faire ses débuts au Festival de Glyndebourne en Sesto dans La clemenza di Tito, suivis de Sesto dans Giulio Cesare la saison suivante. Anna fait son premier enregistrement lyrique, encensé par la critique, en 2013, dans le rôle-titre de Serse de Haendel, avec Christian Curnyn et la Early Opera Company. De 2012 à 2015, elle est membre de la compagnie de l’Opéra de Zurich, où elle fait ses débuts en Cherubino dans Le nozze di Figaro. Labyrinth Ensemble Labyrinth Ensemble est un ensemble à formation variable créé en 2013 par Julie Palloc et Clément Noël afin de permettre une approche fraîche et originale du répertoire de la musique de chambre. L’ensemble rassemble solistes et chambristes européens, dont la plupart sont également membres de l’orchestre de l’Opéra de Zurich.

Cherchant à associer la musique à d’autres arts comme la littérature, la danse et le théâtre, l’ensemble travaille avec des artistes tels qu’Alain Altinoglu, Benjamin Bernheim, Julie Fuchs, Anna Stéphany. Le soutien de Bernard Haitink lors de la création de l’ensemble permet la naissance d’une relation toute particulière avec Anna Stéphany autour du projet Folk songs dont ce disque est le témoignage.

En avril 2016, Labyrinth débute sur la grande scène de l’opéra de Zürich et commande sa première création à Arthur Lavandier autour des Histoires naturelles de Maurice Ravel.

L’un des prochains grands projets de l’ensemble sera dédié à l’Italienisches Liederbuch d’Hugo Wolf.

Berio’s reworking of traditional material and also his inventing of new folk songs inspired us to seek out a similar work which we could rearrange to meet the ensemble’s specific needs. We quickly fell in love with Maurice Ravel’s magnificent Histoires Naturelles and its poetry by Jules Renard, which still enchants us today.

Just as Ravel authorised Manuel Rosenthal to arrange the songs for large orchestra, a version we found a little grandiose, we too went in search of our own ‘Hunter of Images’ (to quote a title from one of Renard’s Histoires Naturelles), to transcribe the piece for us, without losing any of its intimacy or delicacy.

All rearranging carries a risk and indeed Jules Renard himself chose not to be at the premier of Ravel’s songs in 1907, but we hope you will be as charmed as we are by Arthur Lavandier’s ability to recreate Ravel’s immensely nuanced soundworld in his magical transcription.

When we met for the first time in order to organise a concert based around Berio’s Folk Songs, little did we know how the project would develop over the next five years, culminating in the recording of this cd.

‘Of all subjects, this is the one furthest away from music.’ So wrote the critic Pierre Lalo – the son of the composer Edouard – after the first performance of Ravel’s Histoires naturelles (Natural Histories) on 12 January 1907. The very concept of the ‘subject’ was the big open question for musicians at the beginning of the 20th century. Both the birth of psychology and the growth of social criticism had altered the Romantic relationship to the self – ‘The ‘I’ is another person’ Rimbaud had written, in a letter in which he imagines himself as a ‘workman’. National feeling and industrial power, both legacies of the 19th century, were soon to combine in the horrors of the Great War. As for the composers, they took refuge in areas of safety: such as the mythological world of the antique, full of intoxication, that pervades de Falla’s Psyché; or the realism stripped of sentimental associations to which Lalo’s son took such exception on hearing Ravel’s Histoires; or the traditional song repertoire of western cultures as well as of distant peoples – from the Auvergne to Sicily, and from Armenia to Azerbaijan – found in the Folk Songs of Berio.

The dawn of the 20th century also witnessed a changing instrumental landscape. New ensemble groupings blended sonorities for their own sake; the quality of a sound took on the same importance as its elder sisters, Melody and Harmony. By the time he composed Psyché in 1924, de Falla was already familiar with the little constellation of vocal pieces conceived in that spirit a decade earlier: in the year 1912 alone, Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, the Quatre Poèmes hindous by Maurice Delage, and Stravinsky’s Three Japanese Lyrics; and in the following year, Ravel’s Trois poèmes de Mallarmé… The Andalusian composer de Falla echoed these works in his setting of a poem by Georges Jean-Aubry, imbued with an aesthetic approach that the composer would never again revisit. His quintet ensemble is dominated by the incantations of the flute, joined by the harp, violin, voila and cello, bathing the voice in lascivious sounds. The sensual atmosphere matches the text, urging Psyché to

Ravel was more at home with this kind of disturbed lyricism and its thrilling textures: he had already invoked them in his Introduction and Allegro of 1906. The poet José Bruyr called it ‘a little harp concerto from which nothing is missing – it even has a cadenza – with its orchestra pared down to a [string] quartet, a flute, and a clarinet.’ The Histoires naturelles composed the same year adopt a more disconcerting style, one modelled on the gentle irony of Jules Renard, from whose collection of that title Ravel selected five poems. From the haughty strut of the Peacock to the pathetic scurrying of the Guinea-Hen, from the ‘diabolic cry’ of the former to the plaintive tones of the latter; and despite the swan’s gracefulness (disavowed at the end of the song) Ravel’s musical language presents curious, unexpected objects that the work’s first listeners found fascinating but also unsettling: the angry reaction of some members of the audience found a more restrained echo in Lalo’s commentary.

This arrangement by Arthur Lavandier, in its first ever recording, exploits the colours of the original piano version, in a chamber instrumentation of the kind in wich Ravel and his contemporaries often couched their vocal melodies.

In 1964, the final year of his marriage to the mezzo-soprano Cathy Berberian, Berio wrote the Folk Songs for her, based on melodies from various countries. The title, with its popular associations, clearly points in the direction of lyricism: a notion that had something of a mixed reception among his colleagues in Darmstadt, whose annual summer course brought together the postward avant-garde, born out of the ashes of the old order. Firstly, Cathy’s own country is represented by two American songs from the songwriter John Niles (1892-1980): Black Is the Colour, freely adapted from a traditional song, and I Wonder as I Wander. There follows an Armenian ode to the moon, Loosin yelav, then after some

awaken with a new voluptuous desire, despite the flight of her lover Cupid. Premiered on 9 February 1925 at the Palace of the Alhambra in Granada, for de Falla the piece took on the aspect of a ‘little court concert’; as he explained to its dedicatee, Madame Alvar: ‘[In it] you will find no genuine music of the early eighteenth-century Spanish court, but rather how I have imagined it.’

playful allusions to Rossignolet, the French traditional song to the nightingale, and placed between a Sicilian prayer and a Sardinian lament, the composer’s native Liguria features in two songs in Genoan dialect that he wrote in 1947 during his studies. Finally, two songs from the Auvergne in the Occitan language, sourced from Cantaloube (1879-1957), and an Azerbaijani love song that Cathy discovered on a 78 rpm record. The words, which she transcribed by ear, remain obscure except for one verse in Russian comparing love to a stove. The compact ensemble of flute, clarinet, harp, viola, cello and percussion constantly provides colour, warmth and touches of humour, reinforcing its fanciful commentary with a timeless sense of empathy.

Anna stéphany mezzo-soprano Anglo-French mezzo-soprano Anna Stéphany was born in North East England. After her studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, she participated in the 2006 Aix-en-Provence Festival Académie, where she was awarded an HSBC Laureate.

Anna’s many opera appearances include Proserpina in Orfeo at the Aix festival, Rosina in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Charpentier’s Médée at Chicago Opera Theatre and Annio in La Clemenza di Tito at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and at the Théâtre de l’Archevêché during the Aix festival, before making her debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito, with Sesto in Giulio Cesare the following season.

Anna made her critically acclaimed opera recording debut in 2013 in the title role of Handel’s Serse with Christian Curnyn and Early Opera Company. She was a member of the ensemble at Zürich Opera House between 2012-15 where she made her debut as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro. Labyrinth Ensemble is an ensemble with a flexible line-up founded in 2013 by Julie Palloc and Clément Noël with the aim of bringing a fresh and original approach to chamber music.

The ensemble brings together European soloists and chamber music players, most of whom are also members of the Zurich Opera Orchestra.

In its pursuit of links between music and the other arts, such as literature, dance and theatre, the ensemble works with artists such as Alain Altinoglu, Benjamin Bernheim, Julie Fuchs, and Anna Stéphany. The support of Bernard Haitink since the ensemble’s formation has fostered a special relationship with Anna Stéphany for the Folk songs project, to which this disc bears testimony.

In April 2016 Labyrinth had its debut on the main stage of the Zurich Opera House, when it first commissioned Arthur Lavandier for a programme based on Maurice Ravel’s Histoires naturelles.

One of the ensemble’s next major projects will be dedicated to the Italienisches Liederbuch of Hugo Wolf.

Jede Überarbeitung birgt ein Risiko in sich: Jules Renard wollte daher bei der Uraufführung von Ravels Liedern im Jahr 1907 nicht anwesend sein.

Wir hoffen jedoch, dass Sie von der Arbeit Arthur Lavandiers, die Ravels erlesene Timbres und Akzente wunderbar wiedergibt, ebenso wie wir begeistert sein werden.

Unsere Wahl fiel rasch auf die wunderbaren Histoires naturelles von Maurice Ravel, denn die Poesie der Texte Jules Renards ergreift uns auch heute noch sehr.

« Ein Thema, das unter allen Themen sicher der Musik am fremdesten ist. » Das schrieb der Kritiker Pierre Lalo – Édouards Sohn – nach der Uraufführung der Histoires naturelles am 12. Januar 1907. Das Thema: ein Gegenstand, der die Musiker des beginnenden 20. Jh. vor Fragen stellte. Die im Entstehen begriffene Psychologie sowie die Sozialkritik änderten das romantische Verhältnis zu sich selbst – „Ich ist ein anderer,“ sagte bereits Rimbaud in einem Brief, in dem er träumte, ein „Arbeiter“ zu sein. Das Nationalgefühl und die industrielle Stärke, die ein Erbe des 19. Jh. waren, verschmolzen bald im Schrecken des Ersten Weltkriegs. Der andalusische Komponist knüpft in seinem Werk auf ein Gedicht von Georges-Jean Aubry an eine Ästhetik an, die ihn in Staunen versetzt. Sein Quintett, das von den Beschwörungsformeln der Flöte dominiert wird, vereint auch die Harfe, die Geige, die Bratsche und das Cello, die die Stimme mit lasziven Resonanzen umgeben.

Die sinnliche Atmosphäre passt zum Text, der Psyche zu einem erotischen Erwachen aufruft, obwohl ihr Liebhaber Cupido geflohen ist. Das am 9. Februar 1925 im Palast der Alhambra in

Ravel war an diese zwielichtige Lyrik und diese berauschenden Texte eher gewohnt, da er sie bereits in Introduction et Allegro im Jahr 1906 heraufbeschwor, das José Bruyr als „ein kleines Harfenkonzert“ auslegte, „dem nichts fehlt, nicht einmal die Kadenz, und dessen Orchester auf ein [Streich-] Quartett, eine Flöte und eine Klarinette beschränkt ist“. Im selben Jahr nahmen die Histoires naturelles einen unerwarteteren Stil an, der sich die leichte Ironie Jules Renards angeeignet hatte. Die fünf vertonten Gedichte stammen aus einer Sammlung Renards, die denselben Titel trägt. Vom gestelzten Gang des Pfaus bis zum erbärmlichen Lauf des Perlhuhns, vom „teuflischen Schrei“ des ersten bis zu den gellenden Tönen des zweiten, und trotz der – durch die Coda widerrufenen - Eleganz des Schwans stellt Ravels Sprache ungewöhnliche Gegenstände dar, die faszinierend sind, aber das erste Publikum verunsicherten. Die Wut, der einige Zuhörer Ausdruck verliehen, findet ein höfliches Echo in Lalos Kommentar. Die Bearbeitung von Arthur Lavandier, die hier zum ersten Mal aufgenommen wurde, verwertet die Klangfarben der Originalfassung für Klavier in einer kammermusikalischen Instrumentierung, mit der Ravel und seine Zeitgenossen oft ihre Lieder umgaben.

Im Jahr 1964, dem letzten Jahr seiner Ehe mit der Mezzosopranistin Cathy Berberian, schrieb Berio für sie seine Folk Songs über Lieder aus verschiedenen Ländern. Die Rückendeckung durch das Wort „folk“ (volkstümlich) öffnete ihm den geliebten Weg zum Gefühlsvollen, was von seinen Kollegen in Darmstadt unterschiedlich geschätzt wurde, denn dort brachten die Sommerkurse die Avantgarde zusammen, die aus der Asche der alten Welt hervorgegangen war. Zunächst widmet Berio sich den Ländern Cathys mit zwei amerikanischen Liedern des Liedermachers John Niles (1892-1980), Black Is the Colour – ein Lied von dem es eine altüberlieferte Fassung gibt – und I Wonder as I Wander, sowie eine armenische Ode an den

Darauf folgt zwischen einem sizilianischen Gebet und einem sardischen Klagelied sowie nach den schelmischen Anspielungen des französischen Rossignolet das heimatliche Ligurien mit zwei Liedern im genuesischen Dialekt, die er während seines Studiums 1947 komponierte. Schließlich kommen zwei bei Canteloube (1879-1957) gefundene Lieder aus der Auvergne in Okzitanisch und eine Romanze aus Aserbaidschan, die Cathy auf einer Schellackplatte entdeckt hatte, deren Text dem Gehör nach transkribiert wurde und daher unverständlich ist, wenn man von einer russischen Strophe absieht, die die Liebe mit einem Ofen vergleicht. Das kleine Ensemble aus Flöte, Klarinette, Harfe, Bratsche, Cello und Schlagzeug fügt überall Klangfarben hinzu, fühlt mit, scherzt und verstärkt seinen fantastischen Kommentar mit zeitloser Empathie.

Anna stéphany mezzosopran

Die im Nordosten Englands geborene englisch-französische Mezzosopranistin Anna Stéphany studierte an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London und nahm 2006 an der Académie du Festival d’Aix teil, wo sie im selben Jahr HSBC-Preisträgerin wurde.

Bei ihren vielseitigen Opernauftritten interpretierte sie Proserpina in Orfeo beim Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Rosina in Rossinis Il barbiere di Siviglia im Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Charpentiers Médée am Chicago Opera Theatre sowie Annio in La clemenza di Tito an der Bayerischen Staatsoper in München und beim Festival von Aix-en-Provence auf der Bühne des erzbischöflichen Theaters dieser Stadt, bevor sie beim Glyndebourne Festival in der Rolle des Sesto in La clemenza di Tito debütierte und in der darauffolgenden Spielzeit Sesto in Giulio Cesare sang. Anna Stéphany machte ihre erste, von der Kritik hoch gelobte Opernaufnahme 2013 in der Rolle von Händels Serse mir Christian Curnyn und der Early Opera Company.

Zwischen 2012 und 2015 war sie Ensemblemitglied des Opernhauses Zürich, wo sie Ihr Debüt als Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro gab. Darauf folgten viele andere Rollen, wie etwa Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Siebel in Faust, Nicklausse in Les contes d’Hoffmann, Minerva in Il ritrono d’Ulisse in patria, Romeo in I Capuleti e i Monetecchi, Charlotte in Werther und vor Kurzem Idamante in Idomeneo. Eine ihrer begehrtesten Rollen ist die des Octavian im Rosenkavalier von Strauss. Ihr Rollendebüt gab sie 2011 am Bolschoi-Theater, bevor sie die Rolle an der Königlichen Oper Stockholm sowie am Royal Opera House, Covent Garden wieder aufnahm. Als Konzertsängerin trat sie bei den BBC Proms mit dem London Philharmonic Orchestra/Jurowski auf, aber auch in Beethovens Neunter Symphonie und Les nuits d’été von Berlioz mit dem Royal Liverpool Philharmonic; in Cestis Orontea mit La Nuova Musica in der Wigmore Hall; Elgars Sea Pictures mit den Bremer Philharmonikern; Bachs MatthäusPassion mit dem Gabrieli Consort; Bachs Matthäus-Passion mit der Handel & Haydn Society/ Harry Christophers; La Damoiselle élue mit dem Philharmonia Orchestra/Esa-Pekka Salonen; ein Programm mit Werken Händels in New York, London und Paris mit dem Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment/William Christie sowie Konzerte mit dem Danish National Symphony Orchestra, dem Philharmonia Orchestra/Jakub Hruša, Pygmalion/Raphaël Pichon, Balthasar Neumann/Thomas Hengelbrock und La Scintilla/Laurence Cummings. HSBC-preisträger „der akademie du festival d’aix“

Das Labyrinth Ensemble ist ein verschieden besetztes Ensemble, das 2013 von Julie Palloc und Clément Noël gegründet wurde, um an die Kammermusik mit einem frischen, originellen Ansatz heranzugehen. In diesem Ensemble spielen europäische Solisten und Kammermusiker, von denen die meisten auch Mitglieder des Züricher Opernorchesters sind.

Da das Ensemble bestrebt ist, die Musik mit anderen Künsten wie der Literatur, dem Tanz und dem Theater zu verbinden, arbeitet es mit Künstlern wie Alain Altinoglu, Benjamin Bernheim, Julie Fuchs, und Anna Stéphany zusammen. Die Unterstützung Bernard Haitinks bei der Ensemblegründung ermöglichte eine ganz besondere Beziehung zu Anna Stéphany rund um das Projekt Folk songs, von dem die vorliegende CD zeugt.

Im April 2016 debütierte Labyrinth auf der großen Bühne des Opernhauses Zürich und gab zum ersten Mal ein Werk in Auftrag, u.zw. bei Arthur Lavandier rund um Maurice Ravels Histoires naturelles. Eines der nächsten großen Projekte des Ensembles ist dem Italienischen Liederbuch von Hugo Wolf gewidmet.

Die hier vorliegende CD ist die erste des Ensembles Labyrinth.

In all his splendour, he’s parading around with the air of an Indian prince, carrying on his person the customary rich presents. Love points up the brilliance of his colours, and his crest quivers like a lyre. His fiancée does not appear. He climbs to the rooftop and looks over towards the sun. He utters his devilish cry: Léon! Léon! That’s how he calls to his fiancée.

He sees no one coming and no one answers. The fowls, accustomed to this, don’t even raise their heads. They’re tired of admiring him. He comes back down into the farmyard, so sure of his beauty that he is incapable of resentment. His wedding will be for tomorrow. And, not knowing how to spend the rest of the day, he goes over towards the steps. He climbs them as if they were the steps of a temple, with an officious gait. He raises the long train of his robe, heavy with eyes that have not come off it. He rehearses the ceremony once more.

Il ne reste qu’un instant désabusé, car les nuages tardent peu à revenir, et, là-bas, où meurent les ondulations de l’eau, en voici un qui se reforme. The GRASSHOPPER It is the hour when, weary of wandering, the black insect returns from his walk and carefully repairs the disorder of his estate. First he rakes his narrow sand paths. He makes sawdust which he pushes away from the threshold of his refuge. He files the root of that long grass that’s likely to get in his way. He has a rest. Then he winds up his tiny watch. Has he finished? Is it broken? He rests a little longer. He goes back into his house and shuts the door. He turns the key in the delicate lock for a long time. And he listens: nothing to alarm him outside. But he doesn’t feel safe. And as if by a little chain with a squeaky pulley, he goes right down into the depths of the earth. There’s nothing more to be heard. In the silent countryside, the poplars stand up like fingers in the air and point at the moon.

The swan He glides on the lake like a white sleigh, from cloud to cloud. For he hungers only for the fleecy clouds that he can see being born, moving and disappearing in the water. It’s one of them that he wants. He aims his beak at it, and suddenly plunges his snow-clad neck into the water.

Then, like a woman’s arm emerging from her sleeve, he withdraws it again. He has caught nothing. He watches: the startled clouds have disappeared. His disillusionment lasts only a moment, for the clouds don’t take long to come back, and just over there, where the ripples are dying away in the water, one is already taking shape again. Gently, on his light cushion of feathers, the swan paddles over and approaches . . .

He’s exhausting himself trying to fish for idle reflections, and perhaps he will die, a victim of this illusion, before he catches a single piece of cloud. But what am I saying? Every time he plunges, he searches the nourishing mud with his beak and brings back a worm. He’s getting as fat as a goose.

16 LE MARTIN-PECHEUR Ça n’a pas mordu, ce soir, mais je rapporte une rare émotion.

Comme je tenais ma perche de ligne tendue, un martin-pêcheur est venu s’y poser. Nous n’avons pas d’oiseau plus éclatant. Il semblait une grosse fleur bleue au bout d’une longue tige. La perche pliait sous le poids. Je ne respirais plus, tout fier d’être pris pour un arbre par un martin-pêcheur. Et je suis sûr qu’il ne s’est pas envolé de peur, mais qu’il a cru qu’il ne faisait que passer d’une branche à une autre.

17 LA PINTADE C’est la bossue de ma cour. Elle ne rêve que plaies à cause de sa bosse. Les poules ne lui disent rien : brusquement, elle se précipite et les harcèle. Puis elle baisse sa tête, penche le corps, et, de toute la vitesse de ses pattes maigres, elle court frapper, de son bec dur, juste au centre de la roue d’une dinde.

Cette poseuse l’agaçait. Ainsi, la tête bleuie, ses barbillons à vif, cocardière, elle rage du matin au soir. Elle se bat sans motif, peut-être parce qu’elle s’imagine toujours qu’on se moque de sa taille, de son crâne chauve et de sa queue basse. Et elle ne cesse de jeter un cri discordant qui perce l’aire comme un pointe.

Parfois elle quitte la cour et disparaît. Elle laisse aux volailles pacifiques un moment de répit. Mais elle revient plus turbulente et plus criarde. Et, frénétique, elle se vautre par terre. Qu’a-t-elle donc ? La sournoise fait une farce. Elle est allée pondre son œuf à la campagne. Je peux le chercher si ça m’amuse. Et elle se roule dans la poussière comme une bossue.

The kingfisher I didn’t get a bite this evening, but I’ve come back with a rare emotion.

As I was holding my fishing rod outstretched, a kingfisher came and perched on it. We have no bird more dazzling. He was like a great blue flower at the end of a long stem. The rod bent under his weight.

I didn’t dare breathe, I was so proud to be mistaken for a tree by a kingfisher. And I’m sure that he didn’t fly off out of fear, but thought he was just flitting from one branch to another.

The guinea-hen She’s the hunchback of my barnyard. She dreams only of making a nuisance of herself because of her hump. The hens don’t say anything to her: suddenly she rushes over and pesters them. Then she lowers her head, leans her body over, and as fast as her skinny legs will carry her, she runs and uses her hard beak to strike right in the middle of the wheel of a turkey’s tail. That show-off was annoying her. And thus, blue in the face, her wattles out and spoiling for a fight, she rages from morning to night. She quarrels for no reason, perhaps because she always has the impression that she’s being mocked for her figure, her bald head and her low tail. And she constantly utters her discordant cry which pierces the air like a sharp point. Sometimes she leaves the yard and disappears. She leaves the peace-loving fowls a moment’s respite. But she returns unrulier and shriller than ever. And, in a frenzy, she wallows on the ground. What can be wrong with her? The sly thing is playing a joke on us. She’s gone and laid her egg in the open country. I can go and look for it if I like. And she rolls in the dust like a hunchback.

The mirror, so familiar with your tear-streaked face, reflects this morning a clear, pure lake ringed with flowers, a milky sky like an eternal dawn.

Midi s’approche et danse, ivre sur ses pieds d’or.

Tends-lui les bras, sèche tes pleurs ; dans un essor abandonne, Psyché, la langueur de ta couche.

Midday approaches, dancing on its golden feet.

Reach out your arms towards it, dry your eyes; rise up, Psyché, And leave behind the langour of your divan.

L’oiseau chant au sommet de l’arbre ; le soleil sourit d’aise en voyant l’universel éveil, et le Printemps s’étire, une rose à la bouche.

les lauréats hsbc de l’ACADÉMIE DU FESTIVAL D’AIX L’Académie du Festival d’Aix est un centre de perfectionnement vocal et instrumental de référence, un atelier de réflexion, d’expérimentation, de création d’opéra et de formes innovantes, et un lieu de développement professionnel pour les jeunes artistes. Elle leur offre la possibilité de participer à des résidences, de se produire lors de concerts ou productions d’opéra dans le cadre du Festival d’Aix, puis en tournée tout au long de l’année, en France et à l’étranger.

Attaché à l’accompagnement des jeunes talents, HSBC France s’associe depuis 2006 à l’Académie du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Chaque année, la direction artistique du Festival sélectionne une nouvelle promotion de chanteurs, pianistes, chefs de chant et ensembles de musique de chambre. Le Groupe HSBC France soutient ces jeunes artistes, les Lauréats HSBC, choisis parmi les talents les plus prometteurs de l’Académie, qui poursuivent ainsi l’expérience acquise lors du Festival en se produisant lors de récitals et concerts aussi bien en France qu’à l’étranger.

Depuis 2014, le Festival d’Aix produit des enregistrements de disques des Lauréats HSBC de l’Académie, en coproduction avec Alpha Classics. THE HSBC LAUREATES OF THE ACADÉMIE DU FESTIVAL D’AIX The Académie du Festival d’Aix is a centre of excellence for vocal and instrumental training, a platform for reflecting, experimenting and creating opera and innovative forms, and a place that caters for the professional development of young artists. It offers them the opportunity to take part in residencies and perform in concerts and opera productions at the Festival d’Aix as well as on tours across France and abroad throughout the year.

Committed to sponsoring young talents, HSBC France has been joining with the Académie du Festival d’Aix since 2006. The artistic direction of the Festival selects each year a new set of singers, pianists vocal coaches and chamber music ensembles. The HSBC France group supports these young artists, the HSBC Laureates, chosen among the Académie’s most promising talents and giveS them the chance to perform in recitals and concerts both in France and abroad.

Since 2014 the Festival of Aix-en-Provence has produced CD recordings by the HSBC Laureates of the Académie, in co-production with Alpha Classics. Previous releases are: Nocturnes with Rupert Charlesworth and Edwige Herchenroder ; Songs & Lieder with Mari Eriksmoen and Alphonse Cemin ; Mozart with the Van Kuijk Quartet.

Die „Académie du Festival d’Aix“ bietet ihnen die Teilnahme an Künstlerresidenzen sowie die Gelegenheit, das frisch Erlernte bei Konzerten oder Opernproduktionen des „Festival d’Aix“ (Musikfestival Aix-en-Provence) sowie anschließenden Tourneen durch Frankreich und im Ausland in der Praxis anzuwenden und vorzustellen.
