There was a time…

It was primarily during the 1950s that instruments such as the crumhorn began to attract attention within the general context of the rediscovery of early instruments; the instrument took its place within every ensemble that performed mediaeval or Renaissance music. Its highly individual sound and its unique shape had made it an indispensable element in the panoply of instruments, endowing these ensembles with its most individual timbre. The German instrument maker Otto Steinkopf was responsible for the creation of the first modern reconstructions of these instruments; this craftsman of genius was able to refer to many original instruments that had been preserved in the most important European museums of musical instruments, although his closely-observed copies did not solve all the problems inherent in the instrument.

We are bound to admit that these instruments with their restricted timbre and above all their approximate tuning often appear as if they were the comic turns of their various ensembles and nothing more. Otto Steinkopf was also concerned about the range of the original instruments, for they were limited to a ninth; he decided to add two keys to his crumhorns, the same keys that had also been added to the chalumeau to extend its range to an octave and a fourth in the 18th century. He had also perfected a system of adjustable plastic reeds, in order to avoid all the problems that go together with cane reeds, although with rather approximate results. Slowly, instrument makers began to make copies that were more reliable and that used cane reeds. It was, however, still necessary to learn how to make all the adjustments the instruments required and to learn the best manner of making their reeds: Bernhard Stilz and Jérémie Papasergio have devoted themselves to these tasks and the success of their work is impressive; it is now finally possible to use the instrument in music that does not compel it to play a comically grotesque role!

Terminology The name of the instrument that we call the crumhorn is different in every country that it was used, although it is clear that each name is a simple description of its unique shape: Krummhorn or Krumbhorn in German, storto in Italian and tournebout in French. We should, however, here discuss the use of the word cromorne, as the instrument is called in modern French. We will see later that this instrument was known in France during the Renaissance only as the tournebout; the word cromhorne was used in 17th century France to describe an instrument of the oboe family, a type of bass oboe that was used in music intended for performance in the open air by the Grande Écurie. This highly individual instrument has also been recreated and was used in our recording of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Messe pour les instruments au lieu des orgues (RIC 143).

Definition The crumhorn is a double reed wind instrument. It is most usually made from maple, it has a cylindrical bore and it opens out slightly at its bottom end. As its name indicates, the instrument’s shape is bent: this stage of its manufacture is carried out once the bore has been drilled by dampening the body slightly and bending it gradually over a hot iron. The reed is unusual in that it is enclosed in a windcap; the player therefore does not compress the reeds directly with his lips. The reeds therefore vibrate freely, somewhat like bagpipe reeds. This technique prevents the player from using lip pressure to make the instrument sound at the octave and from varying the instrument’s dynamic as well as from correcting any problems of intonation.

History The crumhorn’s origins are still unclear. Barra Boydell has gone into this question thoroughly in his The Crumhorn and other Renaissance Windcap Instruments (Frits Knuf,

Buren, 1982); this work of course forms a primary reference for this introduction. The oldest iconographical representation of a crumhorn is in a miniature in the manuscript of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, although it is not certain if we can really state that it accords totally with our instrument. The first German organological treatise, Sebastian Virdung’s Musica Getutscht (1511), provides an answer to this question, displaying two pictures of crumhorns: there is a quartet of Krummhörner and also an instrument almost identical to the instrument of the Cantigas that is called Platerspil; its capsule has been replaced by a bladder that fulfils a similar function to the bagpipe’s bag.

A reading of Barra Boydell’s work quickly reveals two extremely important facts: the instrument was popular for only a short period of time and in a relatively restricted geographical area. He was able to study a great number of sources of information, including pictures, mentions of the instrument and its players in archival sources as well as descriptions of its use in musical practice of the time and in various scores. The period with which we are concerned goes from the last years of the 15th century until the beginning of the 17th century, while the principal areas of the instrument’s use were the Germanic countries (Southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria) and Italy. The Low Countries later adopted the instrument and it also made a few furtive appearances in Denmark and in England, but these cannot provide anything comparable to the great amount of information available in the Germanic countries and in Italy. As far as France is concerned, the country’s oldest source of organological data from the Renaissance, Philibert Jambe de Fer’s Épitome musical (Lyon, 1556) makes no mention of the instrument. It is first described in Marin Mersenne’s Harmonie universelle (1636): ‘Here I will add the crumhorn; it is made in the shape of a rifle butt and is used for pieces in four, five and six parts…’. Pierre Trichet is even more explicit about the instrument’s lack of success in France in his Traité des Instruments de Musique (app. 1640): ‘The crumhorn is a musical instrument that has a touch of Antiquity about it, but which is much less fashionable in France than in Germany and in England’.

Repertory Given what we know of the instrument’s history, we have chosen music primarily from the countries mentioned above. We have allotted a large amount of space to a few rare pieces that were specifically composed for crumhorns, either because the composers instructed that the instruments were specifically to be used or because manuscript sources indicate that these pieces were performed on crumhorns. We have also searched the music of the time for pieces that would be suited to the crumhorns and to their limited range.

Our first point of interest is German music of the beginning of the 16th century, in particular the music by the members of the entourage of Emperor Maximilian I and of his favoured composers Heinrich Isaac and Ludwig Senfl in particular. Crumhorns are also to be seen in Hans Burgmaier’s famous engravings of the Triumphs of Maximilian. These pieces of dance music and songs with risqué texts fit in well with the accepted idea of the crumhorn’s character, although it is precisely this same German repertory that enables us to present a completely different aspect of these instruments, for they were also used in sacred polyphonic music.

Praetorius describes this practice in his Syntagma Musicum. The most impressive example of this is Thomas Stoltzer’s imposing motet Erzürne dich nicht; written while he was in the service of the Hungarian court, Stoltzer dedicated this motet to the Margrave of Brandenburg, a great admirer of the crumhorn, specifying that he had composed it with crumhorns in mind: ‘an die Khrumphörner gedacht‘. Each of the voices of the seven parts of this extremely long motet can be performed on the crumhorns if the traditional transposition of a fourth is used; we have also chosen to play the first verse at six parts.

Amongst the other sources consulted, a manuscript preserved in Regensburg contains various pieces for wind instruments that were initially vocal in origin; here only the bass line of the song Du fond de ma pensée by Pierre de Manchicourt has been transcribed with the note ‘guet auf den Khrumbhorn’. We have merely had to find the rest of the song in four parts and to allot it to the crumhorns.

A collection of individual parts for the wind instruments of an alta capella that belonged to the musicians of the Danish court in Copenhagen contains several pieces that are marked with the word Krumbhörner; one of these is the five-part setting of Tandernaken auff dem Rheine.

We now should pay a visit to the Low Countries. Notwithstanding the many indications of the instrument’s presence in these regions, we should also remember that the sign of the shop run by the music publisher Tielman Susato in Antwerp was ‘In den Cromhorn’. What is more, a good number of the dances in his collection Het derde musyck boexcken (1554) are written in such a way as to fit the crumhorns’ ranges perfectly and have also all been transposed down a fourth so as to make them playable by a quartet formed of alto, tenors and bass crumhorns with their warmer timbre. We may assume from this that the soprano crumhorn was not in universal use at that time. Such a particularity of this edition of dance music and the sign ‘In den Cromhorn’ are clear indications of the instrument’s success in the Low Countries. In any case, many of the pieces in the volume are of French origin. One of these is Clément Janequin’s song Une jeune fillette; we have simply had to add the original text to the upper line of Susato’s edition.

Italy appears frequently in all the sources traced by Barra Boydell. The oldest known illustration of a storto player is a painting by Lorenzo Costa dated 1488 and kept in Bologna.

Amongst the various sources is the following mention in the accounts of the Accademia Filarmonica of Verona: ‘Giovanni Stortino suonatore, per lui e suo compagni, per haver suonato nella casa nostra 3 giorni nelle feste di Maggio’. The Museum of Music Instruments in Brussels possesses one of the most moving testimonies to the presence of the storti in Italy: a case that contains an ensemble of six crumhorns. To see them, you have the impression that the musicians have just finished playing them and have put them back in their case. What music was performed with these instruments? Possibly the six-part madrigal Guardane almo pastor by Francesco Corteccia; this piece had been sung in the Intermezzi performed for

the marriage of Cosmus I, duke of Florence and Eleonora of Toledo in Florence in 1539.

Gardano, the piece’s publisher, noted that it was played by twelve shepherds, six being singers and six playing the crumhorns. We have also felt compelled to include the canzona for eight voices La Fiorentina that Lodovico da Viadana composed on a theme from the famous Ballo del Gran Duca and that miraculously suits the crumhorns perfectly; it was impossible to neglect such a chance to perform a piece for eight crumhorns — and we thank our friends who came to join us in our moment of musical folly.

We were equally unable to resist including three Italian pieces whose dance-like and saucy character suits the generally-accepted idea of the crumhorn so well: these are Chi la Gagliarda and two villanelles in Neapolitan style by Adrian Willaert.

Also included in this Italian group are several anonymous dances that are, like Susato’s pieces, intended for a lower quartet of crumhorns without a soprano instrument. We have here combined the storti with recorders in order to bring a momentary flash of a different timbre to the CD. In this same spirit we have also added bombards and a sackbut to our version of Josquin’s La Spagna.

We return finally to Germany at the end of the Renaissance. Praetorius suggests that crumhorns be used in his Terpsichore Musarum, a volume of dances intended in general for the Bande de Violons in the French style; he mentions them in particular for the Passameze a 6, suggesting that they be performed ‘auff Krumbhörner oder anderen Instrumenten’. This was our inspiration for this small suite of music by Praetorius, made up of pieces that fit the original ranges of the crumhorns perfectly. The Passameze also makes use of the quarta bassa transposition, the usual transposition for wind instruments that Praetorius mentions in the third part of his Syntagma Musicum. Several pieces on this recording follow his counsel and thus are perfectly suited to the crumhorns.

Finally, the instrument’s swan song: there is not one piece in Johann Hermann Schein’s Banchetto Musicale (1617) that can be played on the crumhorns, except for this Padouana

Epilogue We must assume that the disappearance of the crumhorn was due to certain of its characteristics or rather, its faults, these being first of all its limited range and, above all, its incapacity to realise dynamics and to attack a note subtly in a way that could rival the human voice and every other instrument.

The musicians of Syntagma Amici are well named; friends to their instruments, they have thrown themselves into this project with all the passion that they feel for their venerable and rare instrument. We give them our thanks. These recordings came about during periods of relaxation and friendship in the South of France (accompanied by crickets) and under the lowering skies of Belgium (accompanied by rain).

The instruments used in this recording were for the most part built by Bernhard Stilz and modelled after the famous Italian instruments belonging to the Musée des instruments de musique in Brussels; the remaining instruments were made in the studios of the British instrument maker Eric Moulder.

for four ‘Krummhörner’ that he adds as an appendix to the main work. This is seemingly the last important score that was composed specifically for the crumhorn.

References to the instrument then become steadily scarcer; they appear in a few inventories of instruments in churches or princely chapels and are mentioned as being used in Amsterdam in 1678 to accompany a dance of Tritons in a ballet. In Diderot’s Encyclopédie (1765) it only rates the following description: ‘Tournebout, a wind instrument with ten holes that is played with a reed like the oboe; village folk used to play it in England’.

Il était une fois…

C’est principalement dans les années 1950, dans le contexte général de la redécouverte des instruments anciens, que l’on s’est penché sur certains instruments particuliers, dont le tournebout. Dans tous les ensembles de musique médiévale et de la Renaissance, le tournebout avait pris sa place. Sa sonorité très particulière, sa forme originale en avaient fait un des éléments indispensables à la panoplie des instruments utilisés pour apporter à ces ensembles l’une de leurs couleurs les plus originales. On doit principalement au facteur allemand Otto Steinkopf les premières reconstructions. Ce génial artisan avait à sa disposition de nombreux instruments conservés dans les plus importants musées instrumentaux européens. Mais leur observation et leur copie ne résolvaient pas toutes les énigmes. Force est de constater que ces instruments, à la sonorité étriquée et surtout à la justesse très approximative, apparaissaient souvent dans les prestations desdits ensembles comme des moments amusants, sans plus. Otto Steinkopf s’était aussi inquiété de la tessiture des instruments originaux, limitée à une neuvième. Il avait eu l’idée d’adapter à ses tournebouts deux clés, identiques à celles utilisées au XVIIIe siècle pour étendre la tessiture du chalumeau à une onzième.

Afin d’éviter tous les problèmes d’utilisation d’anches en roseau, il avait également mis au point un système d’anches réglables en plastique ; le résultat restait très moyen. Petit à petit, les facteurs d’instruments anciens ont approfondi leur examen des instruments originaux et sont arrivés à construire des copies nettement plus fiables, fonctionnant avec des anches naturelles en roseau. Mais il fallait en plus maîtriser le réglage des instruments, trouver la manière de construire des anches… C’est à ce travail que se sont attachés Bernhard Stilz et Jérémie Papasergio. Le résultat est impressionnant et l’on peut enfin

Un peu de terminologie Les appellations du tournebout sont multiples selon les pays. Ce qui est certain c’est que, dans chaque langue, le nom donné à l’instrument décrit simplement l’aspect le plus original de sa forme : Krummhorn (Krumbhorn) en allemand, storto en italien, tournebout en français…

Il est important de s’arrêter un instant sur le terme de « cromorne » utilisé de nos jours en français. En effet, on le verra plus tard, à la Renaissance, notre instrument n’est connu en France que sous le nom de « tournebout ». Le terme de « cromhorne » y est employé au XVIIe siècle pour nommer un instrument de la famille du hautbois, une sorte de « basse de hautbois » qui était utilisée dans les musiques de plein air de la « Grande Écurie ». Cet instrument très particulier a été reconstitué et joué dans notre enregistrement de la Messe pour les instruments au lieu des orgues de Marc-Antoine Charpentier (RIC 143).

Le terme de « cromorne » est donc totalement inapproprié pour nommer en français l’instrument dont il est question ici. Il est bel et bien appelé « tournebout » en français.

Une définition Le tournebout est un instrument à vent à anche double. Il est construit le plus souvent en érable. Sa perce est cylindrique et s’évase légèrement à son extrémité. Comme son nom l’indique, son tuyau est recourbé ; cette phase de la fabrication est opérée après avoir fait la perce, en pliant progressivement le tuyau légèrement humidifié sur un fer chaud. La particularité de l’anche est qu’elle est enfermée dans ce que l’on appelle la « capsule » ; ainsi l’instrumentiste ne pince pas l’anche directement entre les lèvres. Celle-ci vibre librement, un peu comme les anches de cornemuses. Cela interdit donc toute variation de pression des lèvres qui permettrait d’octavier, mais aussi de faire des nuances ou de corriger l’intonation.

Un peu d’histoire L’origine du tournebout reste énigmatique. Barra Boydell (The Crumhorn and other Renaissance Windcap Instruments, Frits Knuf, Buren, 1982) a amplement étudié la question. Notre notice fait évidemment référence à cette remarquable étude. Ce que l’on considère comme la plus ancienne trace d’une représentation de tournebout, est l’une des miniatures du manuscrit des Cantigas de Santa Maria. Mais peut-on affirmer qu’il s’agit en tous points de notre instrument ? Le premier traité d’organologie allemand, Musica Getutscht de Sebastian Virdung, publié en 1511, apporte une réponse à ce doute ; en effet, il représente le tournebout sous deux aspects : un quatuor de « Krummhörner » et un instrument assez identique aux instruments des Cantigas qu’il nomme « Platerspil » dont la capsule est également remplacée par une vèze, dont l’usage est similaire au sac d’une cornemuse.

La lecture de l’ouvrage de Barra Boydel permet très rapidement deux constations très importantes : la brièveté de la vie du tournebout et sa situation géographique assez limitée. Les sources étudiées par le musicologue américain sont très nombreuses : représentations, mention des instruments et des instrumentistes dans des sources d’archives, évocation de leur usage dans la pratique musicale ou dans les partitions. Pour ce qui est des dates, cela va des toutes dernières années du XVe siècle au début du XVIIe siècle et, pour ce qui est de la situation géographique, l’essentiel se passe dans les régions germaniques (Allemagne du Sud, Suisse, Autriche) et en Italie. Viennent ensuite les Pays-Bas et quelques apparitions furtives au Danemark et en Angleterre, mais qui sont sans aucune mesure avec l’abondance des informations en pays germaniques et en Italie. En ce qui concerne la France, la plus ancienne source d’informations organologiques de la Renaissance, l’Épitome musical, de Philibert Jambe de Fer, publié à Lyon en 1556, n’en fait aucune mention. Il faut attendre l’Harmonie universelle de Marin Mersenne (1636) pour en trouver la première évocation : « J’ajouterai seulement ici le tournebout, qui est fait en forme de crosse, et dont on fait

Le répertoire Étant donné ce que l’on sait de l’histoire de l’instrument, c’est principalement dans les pays évoqués plus haut que le répertoire a été choisi. D’une part, nous avons réservé une place importante aux quelques rares pièces destinées spécifiquement aux tournebouts, soit que les compositeurs les ont dédiées à ces instruments, soit que des sources nous indiquent que ces pièces ont été effectivement jouées sur les tournebouts. D’autre part, nous avons cherché dans les répertoires de l’époque des pièces qui pouvaient leur convenir en respectant tout particulièrement les tessitures limitées à la neuvième.

La musique allemande du début du XVIe siècle entre autres celle qui est écrite dans l’entourage de l’empereur Maximilien Ier (avec ses musiciens de prédilection, Heinrich Isaac et Ludwig Senfl) constitue une source importante de leur répertoire.. Les tournebouts figurent d’ailleurs dans les célèbres gravures des Triomphes de Maximilien de Hans Burgmaier. Ces musiques de danse et pièces aux textes grivois conviennent bien à l’idée commune du caractère des tournebouts. Mais, justement, ce répertoire allemand nous permet de mettre au jour un caractère tout différent de l’usage de ces instruments qui étaient aussi destinés à la musique polyphonique religieuse. Dans Syntagma Musicum, Praetorius évoque cet usage. L’exemple le plus impressionnant est l’imposant motet Erzürne dich nicht de Thomas Stoltzer ; à l’époque où il est au service de Ludwig II à la cour de Hongrie, Stoltzer dédie ce motet au margrave de Brandebourg, qui apprécie beaucoup notre instrument, en spécifiant qu’il l’a écrit en pensant aux tournebouts : « an

des concerts entiers à quatre, cinq ou six parties… » Et vers 1640, Pierre Trichet dans son Traité des Instruments de Musique est encore plus explicite sur l’insuccès de l’instrument en France : « Le tornebout ou tournebout est un instrument de musique qui ressent quelque chose de l’Antiquité, mais qui n’a point tant de vogue en France qu’en Allemagne et en Angleterre…».

die Khrumphörner gedacht ». Toutes les voix des sept parties de ce très long motet sont, en pratiquant la traditionnelle transposition à la quarte, jouables sur les tournebouts. Nous avons réservé notre choix au premier verset à six voix.

Parmi d’autres sources, un manuscrit conservé à Ratisbonne contient diverses pièces d’origine vocale destinées aux instruments à vent ; ici, seule la voix de basse de la chanson Du fond de ma pensée de Pierre de Manchicourt est notée avec la mention « guet auf den Khrumbhorn ». Il nous a suffit de retrouver la chanson à quatre voix et de la confier à ces instruments.

Un ensemble de parties séparées destinées aux instruments à vent d’une « alta capella », et ayant appartenu aux musiciens de la cour de Danemark à Copenhague, contient quelques pièces pour lesquelles la mention de « Krumbhörner » apparaît. C’est le cas de la version à cinq voix de T’andernaken auff dem Rheine.

Un passage par les Pays-Bas s’imposait. Outre les mentions de la présence de l’instrument dans ces régions, il est bien utile de rappeler que l’enseigne du magasin tenu par l’éditeur Tielman Susato à Anvers était « In den Cromhorn ». De plus, bon nombre des danses de son recueil Het derde musyck boexcken (1554) sont écrites de façon à convenir parfaitement aux tessitures des cromornes et sont toutes transposées à la quarte inférieure de façon à pouvoir être jouées par un quatuor formé des instruments alto, deux ténors et basse dont la sonorité est plus chaude. On peut d’ailleurs supposer que le tournebout soprano n’était pas tout à fait généralisé à cette époque. Cette particularité de l’édition de ce livre de musique de danse et l’enseigne « In den Cromhorn » ne sont-ils pas des indices pour confirmer le succès de l’instrument dans les Pays-Bas ? Quoi qu’il en soit, ce recueil contient des pièces dont bon nombre sont d’origine française. C’est le cas de la chanson Une jeune fillette de Clément Janequin. Il nous a suffi de rajouter le texte original sur la voix supérieure de l’édition de Susato.

Quant à l’Italie, elle apparaît fréquemment dans toutes les sources relevées par Barra

Boydel. La plus ancienne représentation connue d’un joueur de « storto » est d’ailleurs une peinture de Lorenzo Costa datée de 1488 et conservée à Bologne. Parmi toutes ces traces, cette mention des comptes de l’Accademia Filarmonica de Vérone : « Giovanni Stortino suonatore, per lui e suo compagni, per haver suonato nella casa nostra 3 giorni nelle feste di Maggio ». Le Musée des instruments de musique de Bruxelles conserve également l’un des plus émouvants témoignages de cette présence des « storti » en Italie ; il s’agit d’un étui contenant un ensemble de six tounebouts. On a presque l’impression qu’ils viennent d’être joués par les musiciens et rangés dans leur étui… Qu’a-t-on pu jouer avec ces instruments ?

Peut-être ce madrigal à six voix de Francesco Corteccia, Guardane almo pastor. Cette pièce a été chantée dans les Intermezzi représentés à Florence en 1539 pour le mariage de Cosme Ier duc de Florence et Éléonore de Tolède. Le commentaire de l’éditeur Gardano indique que cela a été joué par douze bergers, six étant des chanteurs et les six autres des joueurs de storti. Ce détour par Florence nous a poussé à inclure la canzona à huit La Fiorentina que Lodovico da Viadana écrivit sur le thème du célèbre Ballo del Gran Ducca et qui, miraculeusement, convient parfaitement aux tournebouts : l’occasion était trop belle de jouer une pièce à huit. Merci aux amis qui se sont joints à nous pour ce moment de folie ! À côté de ce très beau madrigal polyphonique, nous n’avons pas résisté au plaisir d’ajouter ces trois pièces italiennes dont le caractère dansant et grivois convient bien à l’idée commune du caractère du tournebout : Chi la Gagliarda et les deux villanelles à la napolitaine d’Adrian Willaert.

Nous avons aussi ajouté à cette partie italienne quelques danses anonymes qui, comme celles de Susato, sont destinées au quatuor grave (sans soprano). Nous avons ici associé les storti aux flûtes à bec, afin d’apporter un instant une autre couleur à ce disque. C’est dans le même esprit que s’y trouve également cette version de La Spagna de Josquin dans laquelle nos instruments sont associés aux bombardes et à la saqueboute.

Enfin, retour à l’Allemagne de la fin de la Renaissance. Dans son recueil de danses

Terpsichore Musarum, destiné sans doute plus généralement à la bande de violons à la française, Praetorius suggère aussi l’utilisation des tournebouts. C’est le cas très spécifiquement du Passameze a 6 qu’il suggère de jouer « auff Krumbhörner oder anderen Instrumenten ». Voilà qui nous conduit à cette petite suite de Praetorius faite de pièces qui se jouent parfaitement dans les tessitures originales de tournebouts. Le Passsameze est également transposé à la « quarta bassa », la principale transposition pour les instruments à vent dont Praetorius évoque la pratique dans la troisième partie de Syntagma Musicum.

Plusieurs pièces de cet enregistrement suivent ce conseil et conviennent ainsi parfaitement aux tournebouts.

Enfin, le « chant du cygne » ; dans son recueil Banchetto Musicale (1617), dont aucune suite ne peut se jouer sur les tournebouts, Johann Hermann Schein ajoute en appendice cette Padouana à quatre destinée spécifiquement aux « Krummhörner ». C’est apparemment la dernière partition importante destinée à notre instrument favori !

Par la suite, les mentions se font de plus en plus rares : quelques inventaires d’instruments dans des églises ou des chapelles princières, la mention de leur utilisation à Amsterdam en 1678 pour accompagner… une danse de Tritons dans un ballet ! Et dans l’Encyclopédie de Diderot en 1765, il ne reste que : « Tournebout, instrument de musique à vent qui a dix trous et qui s’embouche comme le hautbois d’une anche ; les villageois en faisaient autrefois usage en Angleterre. » Épilogue Il faut bien supposer que l’abandon du tournebout est dû à certaines de ses caractéristiques… ou à certains de ses défauts. Sa tessiture limitée d’abord, et surtout l’impossibilité de jouer des nuances et d’avoir des attaques souples qui peuvent rivaliser avec celles des chanteurs et de tous les autres instruments.

L'ensemble de Syntagma Amici porte bien son nom. Amis des instruments, c’est avec

toute la passion qui les anime pour le vénérable et rare instrument que ces musiciens se sont investis gracieusement dans ce projet. Qu’ils en soient remerciés. Ces enregistrements se sont aussi passés comme de grands moments de détente et d’amitié entre le Midi de la France (accompagnés de quelques cigales) et sous le ciel bas et pluvieux de Belgique.

Les instruments utilisés dans cet enregistrement ont été, dans leur grande majorité, construits par Bernhard Stilz sur la base des fameux instruments italiens du Musée des instruments de musique de Bruxelles. Quelques autres instruments proviennent de l’atelier du facteur britanique Eric Moulder.

Es war einmal....

Im Rahmen der Wiederentdeckung der alten Instrumente beschäftigte man sich vor allem in den 50er Jahren mit einigen besonderen, unter denen sich auch das Krummhorn befand.

In allen Ensembles der mittelalterlichen sowie der Renaissancemusik hatte das Krummhorn seinen Platz. Auf Grund seines ganz besonderen Klangs und seiner originellen Form war es zu einem der unabkömmlichen Elemente des Instrumenten-Arsenals geworden und wurde dazu verwendet, diesen Ensembles eine ihrer originellsten Klangfarben zu verschaffen. Die Herstellung der ersten Nachbildungen ist vor allem dem deutschen Instrumentenbauer Otto Steinkopf zu verdanken. Diesem genialen Kunsthandwerker standen viele Instrumente zur Verfügung, die in den bedeutendsten europäischen Musikinstrumenten-Museen erhalten waren. Doch deren Untersuchung und Nachbau lösten nicht alle Geheimnisse.

Man musste feststellen, dass diese Instrumente mit ihrem unflexiblen Klang und vor allem mit ihrer allzu flexiblen Intonation oft bei Darbietungen solcher Ensembles nichts anderes als amüsante Momente brachten. Otto Steinkopf hatte sich auch über den auf eine None beschränkten Tonumfang der Originalinstrumente Gedanken gemacht. Er hatte die Idee, seine Krummhörner mit zwei Klappen zu versehen, die mit denen identisch waren, die im 18. Jarhudert verwendet wurden, um den Tonumfang des Chalumeau auf ein Undezime zu erweitern.

Außerdem hatte er ein System regulierbarer Rohrblätter aus Plastik entwickelt, um alle Probleme der Rohrblätter aus Schilfrohr zu vermeiden. Das Ergebnis blieb jedoch sehr unbefriedigend. Nach und nach vertieften die Hersteller alter Instrumente ihre Untersuchungen der Originalinstrumente und konnten weit verlässlichere Kopien herstellen, die mit natürlichen Schilfrohrblättern funktionierten. An diesem Punkt hat

Ein wenig Terminologie Die Namen des Krummhorns sind je nach Land zahlreich. Sicher ist, dass die Bezeichnung des Instruments in jeder Sprache einfach den originellsten Aspekt seiner Form beschreibt: Krummhorn (Krumbhorn) auf Deutsch, „storto“ auf Italienisch, „tournebout“ auf Französisch... Wichtig ist dabei, sich einen Augenblick mit der heute auf Französisch benutzten Bezeichnung „cromorne“ zu beschäftigen. Wie wir später sehen werden, war unser Instrument nämlich in der Renaissancezeit in Frankreich nur unter dem Namen „tournebout“ bekannt. Der Begriff „cromhorne“ wurde im Frankreich des 17. Jarhudert verwendet, um ein Instrument der Oboenfamilie zu bezeichnen, eine Art „Bass-Oboe“, die bei der Freilichtmusik der „Grande Écurie“ eingesetzt wurde. Dieses sehr eigenartige Instrument hat man nachgebaut; es ist in unserer Aufnahme der Messe pour les instruments au lieu des orgues von Marc-Antoine Charpentier (RIC 143) zu hören. Der Begriff „cromorne“ ist demnach vollkommen ungeeignet, im Französischen das Instrument zu bezeichnen, von dem in dieser Aufnahme die Rede ist. Dieses wird daher auf Französisch korrekt „tournebout“ genannt.

Definition Das Krummhorn ist ein Blasinstrument mit doppeltem Rohrblatt. Meistens ist es aus Ahornholz hergestellt. Seine Bohrung ist zylindrisch und erweitert sich dem Ende zu leicht.

Bernhard Stilz schon vor 20 Jahren begonnen selber solche Instrumente nachzubauen, die seinen Ansprüchen an Klang und Intonationssicherheit entsprachen. Doch man musste auch die Feinjustierung der Instrumente beherrschen und die Art der Rohrblattherstellung finden... Dieser Arbeit widmeten sich Bernhard Stilz und Jérémie Papasergio. Das Ergebnis ist eindrucksvoll, und so kann man endlich versuchen, dieses Instrument in anderen Repertoires als in komischen und grotesken Stücken einzusetzen.

Wie sein Name besagt, ist sein Korpus krumm; diese Herstellungsphase erfolgt nach dem Ausbohren der Innenbohrung, indem das leicht befeuchtete Holz nach und nach über einem heißen Metall gebogen wird. Die Besonderheit des Rohrblattes besteht darin, dass es in einer sogenannten „Windkapsel“ eingeschlossen ist, so dass der Spieler das Rohrblatt nicht direkt zwischen seine Lippen klemmt. Es vibriert somit frei etwa so wie die Rohrblätter der Dudelsäcke. Das verhindert jegliche Variation beim Druck der Lippen und somit auch die Möglichkeit zu überblasen, Nuancen zu machen oder die Intonation mi die Lippen zu korrigieren.

Ein wenig Geschichte Die Herkunft des Krummhorns bleibt rätselhaft. Barra Boydells Werk (The Crumhorn and other Renaissance Windcap Instruments, Frits Knuf, Buren, 1982) hat diese Frage ausgiebig untersucht. Unsere kurze Darstellung beruft sich selbstverständlich auf diese bemerkenswerte Studie. Als älteste Spur einer Darstellung des Krummhorns betrachtet man eine der Miniaturen der Handschrift der Cantigas de Santa Maria. Doch kann man beweisen, dass es sich in jeder Hinsicht um unser Instrument handelt? Die 1511 veröffentlichte erste deutsche Organologieabhandlung, Musica Getutscht von Sebastian Virdung antwortet auf diesen Zweifel. Sie stellt nämlich das Krummhorn unter zwei Aspekten vor: ein „Krummhörner-Quartett“ sowie ein Instrument, das denen der Cantigas sehr ähnlich ist, von Virdung „Platerspil“ genannt wird und anstatt der Windkapsel eine Schweinblase aufweist, dessen Gebrauch dem Windbalg eines Dudelsacks entspricht.

Beim Lesen von Barra Boydels Werk macht man rasch zweierlei sehr wichtige Feststellungen: Das Krummhorn hatte eine kurze Lebenszeit, und seine geographische Verbreitung war ziemlich beschränkt. Die von dem amerikanischen Musikwissenschaftler untersuchten Quellen sind sehr vielfältig: Darstellungen, Erwähnungen von Instrumenten und Spielern in Archivquellen, Bemerkungen über den Gebrauch der Instrumente in der musikalischen

Das Repertoire Aufgrund dessen, was über die Geschichte des Instruments bekannt ist, wurde das Repertoire hauptsächlich aus den oben erwähnten Ländern gewählt. Einerseits räumten wir jenen wenigen Stücken einen wichtigen Platz ein, die speziell für Krummhörner gedacht sind, das heißt, dass entweder die Komponisten sie diesen Instrumenten zugedacht haben oder dass uns Quellen angeben, diese Stücke seien tatsächlich auf Krummhörnern gespielt worden. Andererseits suchten wir in den Repertoires der Zeit passende Werke unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des auf eine None beschränkten Tonumfangs dieser Instrumente.

Die deutsche Musik des beginnenden 16. Jarhundert bildet das erste Zentrum unseres

Praxis oder in Partituren. Was die Daten betrifft, so gehen sie von den allerletzten Jahren des 15. Jarhudert bis zum Beginn des 17., während sich in geographischer Hinsicht das Wesentliche in den deutschen Regionen (Süddeutschland, Schweiz, Österreich) und in Italien abspielt, gefolgt von den Niederlanden und einigen flüchtigen Auftritten in Dänemark und England, wo jedoch die Erwähnungen des Krummhorns nicht mit der Informationsfülle in den deutschen Ländern und Italien zu vergleichen sind. Was Frankreich betrifft, so ist in der ältesten organologischen Informationsquelle der Renaissance, dem 1556 in Lyon veröffentlichten Épitome musical von Philibert Jambe de Fer davon nicht die Rede. Erst in der Harmonie universelle von Marin Mersenne (1636) findet man die erste Erwähnung: „Ich füge dem hier nur den Tournebout hinzu, der in Form eines Krummstabs gebaut ist und mit dem man ganze Konzerte mit vier, fünf oder sechs Parts ausführt ...“. Und gegen 1640 ist Pierre Trichet in seinem Traité des Instruments de Musique noch deutlicher in Hinblick auf den mangelnden Erfolg des Instrumentes in Frankreich: „Der Tornebout oder Tournebout ist ein Musikinstrument, das etwas Antikes an sich hat, aber in Frankreich nicht so sehr en vogue ist wie in Deutschland oder England...“.

Interesses, u.a. die Musik aus der Umgebung von Kaiser Maximilian I. mit seinen Lieblingsmusikern Heinrich Isaac und Ludwig Senfl. Die Krummhörner sind übrigens in Hans Burgmaiers berühmten Stichen über den Triumphzug Maximilians zu sehen. Die Tanzmusik sowie die Stücke mit schlüpfrigen Texten passen gut zur verbreiteten Vorstellung vom Charakter des Krummhorns. Doch gerade das deutsche Repertoire erlaubt uns, eine ganz andere Verwendung dieser Instrumente ans Licht zu bringen, die nämlich auch für die polyphone geistliche Musik bestimmt waren. Im Syntagma Musicum erwähnt Praetorius diesen Gebrauch. Das eindrucksvollste Beispiel ist die imposante Motette Erzürne dich nicht von Thomas Stoltzer. Als jener am ungarischen Hof im Dienst Ludwig II. stand, widmete er diese Motette dem Markgrafen von Brandenburg, der unser Instrument sehr schätzte, mit dem Hinweis, er hätte „an die Khrumphörner gedacht“. Alle sieben Stimmen dieser sehr langen Motette können, wenn man die übliche Quarttransposition beachtet, auf Krummhörnern gespielt werden. Wir haben den sechsstimmigen ersten Vers gewählt.

Unter anderen Quellen enthält ein in Regensburg aufbewahrtes Manuskript verschiedene ursprünglich vokale Stücke für Blasinstrumente; hier trägt nur die Bassstimme des Liedes Du fond de ma pensée von Pierre de Manchicourt den Hinweis „guet auf den Khrumbhorn“(sic).

Wir mussten das vierstimmige Lied nur wiederfinden und es diesen Instrumenten anvertrauen.

Eine Reihe von Stimmbüchern für Blasinstrumente einer „alta capella“, die den Musikern des dänischen Hofs in Kopenhagen gehörten, enthält einige Stücke, die die Angabe„Krumbhörner“(sic) tragen. Das ist der Fall der fünfstimmigen Fassung von Tandernaken auff dem Rheine.

Ein Abstecher in die Niederlande war auch notwendig. Abgesehen von Erwähnungen des Instruments in diesen Gegenden, ist es offensichtlich nützlich, daran zu erinnern, dass auf dem Ladenschild des Verlegers Tielman Susato in Antwerpen „In den Cromhorn“ stand.

Außerdem sind viele Tänze seines Bandes Het derde musyck boexcken (1554) so geschrieben, dass sie für den Tonumfang der Krummhörner bestens geeignet sind und überdies eine

Quart hinunter transponiert, so dass sie von einem Quartett aus Alt-, zwei Tenor- und Bassinstrumenten gespielt werden können, deren Klangfarbe wärmer ist. Man kann im übrigen annehmen, dass das Soprankrummhorn in dieser Zeit nicht so sehr verbreitet war.

Weisen die Besonderheiten in der Ausgabe dieses Tanzmusikbandes sowie das Ladenschild „In den Cromhorn“ nicht auf den Erfolg des Instruments in den Niederlanden hin? Wie dem auch sei, dieser Band enthält Stücke, von denen viele französischer Herkunft sind.

Das ist für das Lied Une jeune fillette von Clément Janequin der Fall. Wir mussten nur den Originaltext zur Oberstimme von Susatos Ausgabe hinzufügen.

Was Italien betrifft, so taucht das Krummhorn oft in den von Barra Boydel gefundenen Quellen auf. Die älteste bekannte Darstellung eines „Storto“-Spielers ist übrigens ein in Bologna aufbewahrtes Gemälde von Lorenzo Costa aus dem Jahr 1488. Unter all diesen Spuren findet sich folgende Erwähnung in der Buchführung der Accademia Filarmonica von Verona: „Giovanni Stortino suonatore, per lui e suo compagni, per haver suonato nella casa nostra 3 giorni nelle feste di Maggio”. Das Musikinstrumenten-Museum von Brüssel besitzt eines der beeindruckendsten Zeugnisse für das Vorhandensein der Storti in Italien: Es handelt sich um ein Etui mit sechs Krummhörnern. Fast hat man den Eindruck, dass die Musiker eben noch auf Ihnen gespielt und sie dann in ihr Etui gelegt haben... Was spielte man wohl auf diesen Instrumenten? Vielleicht das sechsstimmige Madrigal Guardane almo pastor von Francesco Corteccia. Dieses Stück wurde bei den Intermezzi gesungen, die man 1539 in Florenz zur Hochzeit des Herzogs von Florenz Cosimo I. mit Eleonora von Toledo aufführte. Der Kommentar des Verlegers Gardano gibt an, dass es von zwölf Hirten interpretiert wurde, von denen sechs Sänger und sechs andere „Storti“-Spieler waren. Und da wir schon für einen Augenblick in Florenz weilten, widerstanden wir der Versuchung nicht, die achtstimmige Canzona La Fiorentina einzufügen, die Lodovico de Viadana auf das Thema des berühmten Ballo del Gran Ducca schrieb und die wie durch ein Wunder für die Krummhörner bestens geeignet ist: Die Gelegenheit, ein Stück zu acht zu spielen, war allzu schön. Wir danken den

Freunden, die sich für diesen außerordentlichen Moment zu uns gesellt haben!

Neben diesem sehr schönen polyphonen Madrigal haben wir uns das Vergnügen genehmigt, drei italienische Stücke einzufügen, deren tänzerischer, schlüpfriger Charakter der allgemeinen Vorstellung vom Krummhorn gut entspricht: Chi la Gagliarda und die zwei Villanellen auf Neapolitaner Art von Adrian Willaert.

Dem italienischen Teil fügten wir auch einige anonyme Tänze bei, die wie die von Susato für ein tiefes Quartett (ohne Sopran) bestimmt sind. Hier haben wir den „Storti“ Blockflöten an die Seite gestellt, um dieser CD einen Augenblick lang eine andere Klangfarbe zu verleihen.

Im gleichen Sinne findet sich auf dieser CD die Fassung von La Spagna von Josquin, in der neben unseren Instrumenten Pommern und Posaune zu hören sind. Schließlich kehren wir ins Deutschland der ausgehenden Renaissance zurück. In seiner Tanzsammlung Terpsichore Musarum, die zweifellos eher der „Bande de Violons à la française“ zugedacht war, schlägt Praetorius auch die Verwendung von Krummhörnern vor. Das ist spezifisch beim Passameze a 6 der Fall, wo er dazu anregt, „auff Krumbhörner oder anderen Instrumenten“ zu spielen.

Das führt uns zu jener kleine Suite von Praetorius, die aus Stücken besteht, die man bestens in den Originaltonhöhen der Krummhörner spielen kann. Auch der Passameze ist um eine „Quarta bassa“ transponiert, also um die Haupttransposition für Blasinstrumente, von deren Gebrauch Praetorius im dritten Teil seines Syntagma Musicum spricht. Mehrere Stücke dieser Aufnahme folgen seinem Rat und sind so bestens für Krummhörner geeignet.

Schließlich der „Schwanengesang“: In seinem Band Banchetto Musicale (1617), in dem keine der Suiten auf Krummhörnern gespielt werden kann, fügt Johann Hermann Schein als Anhang diese vierstimmige Padouana hinzu, die ausdrücklich für „Krummhörner“ bestimmt ist. Anscheinend handelt es sich hier um die letzte bedeutende Komposition für unser favorisiertes Instrument!

Danach wird es immer seltener erwähnt: in einigen Instrumenten-Inventaren in Kirchen oder fürstlichen Kapellen sowie eine Erwähnung ihrer Verwendung 1678 in Amsterdam,

Epilog Es ist wohl anzunehmen, dass das Krummhorn aufgrund einiger seiner Merkmale – oder seiner Mängel – in Vergessenheit geriet: Dazu gehören zunächst sein begrenzter Tonumfang, vor allem aber die Unmöglichkeit, darauf Nuancen und weiche Ansätze zu spielen, die mit denen der Sänger oder aller anderer Instrumente rivalisieren können.

Die Musiker von Syntagma Amici tragen ihren Namen zu Recht. Als Freunde der Instrumente haben sie sich mit ihrer gesamten Leidenschaft für das ehrwürdige, seltene Instrument unentgeltlich diesem Projekt gewidmet. Ihnen sei hier gedankt. Die Aufnahmen zwischen Südfrankreich (mit ein wenig Zikadenbegleitung) und unter den tief hängenden Wolken Belgiens (hier mit Regen) waren außerdem große Momente der Entspannung und der Freundschaft.

Die bei dieser Aufnahme verwendeten Instrumente sind zum Großteil von Bernhard Stilz auf der Grundlage der berühmten italienischen Instrumente des Brüsserler Instrumentenmuseum von Brüssel in jarhrelanger Kleinarbeit nachgebaut und zum klingen gebracht. Einige andere stammen aus der Werkstatt des britischen Instrumentenbauers Eric Moulder.

Er stieg heimlich zum Laden nein wohl auf die Dillen.

Sie meint’, er wär ins Heu, nach Gruenmat in das Gäu.

In dem so kam ein junger Knab ins Haus gegangen.

Er ward vom selben Fräuenlein gar schon empfangen: „Mein Mann, der ist ins Heu, ins Gruenmat in das Gäu“.

Er nahm sie bei der Mitten, er tet ihr, weiß nit, wie.

Der Hermann auf der Dillen sprach: „Fahr schon, ich bin noch hie!

Ich bin noch nit ins Heu, nach Gruenmat in das Gäu“. „Ach trautzer, lieber Hermann, nun verzeih mir das!

Ich will dir all mein Leben lang kochen dester baß.
