THE ANTWERP TOWN PLAYERS AND SINGERS. —

The 16th century was known as Antwerp’s Golden Age thanks to a simultaneous development of business, industry, art and science. The harbour town became the most important warehouse of Western Europe; great numbers of foreign traders and bankers made it their base, as did representatives of all types of trade. The town’s material well-being created a great flowering of culture that was then encouraged by the town’s rulers and which in its turn attracted scholars and artists of all types to reside in the city.

It is thus not surprising that secular instrumental music, the music that was played by the town players and singers, also underwent such an efflorescence. The players and singers of Antwerp had come together as members of the Guild of Saint Job by the beginning of the 16th century and maintained their own chapel in the church of Saint Jacob. As the 16th century progressed, an innumerable quantity of players streamed into wealthy Antwerp because the city offered so many opportunities for employment. At every hour of the day there were weddings, festivities and dances; the sounds of instruments being played and of voices raised in song were everywhere, these also being mixed with the happy bustling of the crowd, as the Italian author Lodovico Guicciardini described in 1567. Above all, the Antwerp Guild of Saint Job offered the necessary corporate guarantees for all who made their living from music. A small privileged group of players was that of the town players, who gained status from playing music for the town councillors wherever they went. They also were required to play the retreat or levee in front of the town hall each evening and this turn was soon called “het lauweyt van de stadspijpers”. They also performed in churches and in the town hall as well as at all possible moments elsewhere, such as at visits from foreign dignitaries, taking up of official positions as the swearing of oaths, military successes of the reigning princely

house, announcements of peace, processions, annual fairs and all such occasions. In the 16th century the Antwerp corps of town pipers consisted of five men; amongst the instruments that they played were the shawm, the crumhorn and the trombone, to which they would add softer instruments such as the recorder and the violin for indoor performances such as providing music for banquets in the town hall. Any instruments could be used at any given moment, but the most usual combination for performances outside was that of three reed instruments and one trombone. We may well wonder what the town musicians actually played, for in the sources that have survived we read mainly of mottekens and liedekens.

The answer is actually very simple; the players performed anything and everything that came to hand and that was suitable for the occasion. This may be seen from the title-pages of the published books of songs for several voices of the time, wherein we may often read “seer lustich om singen ende spelen op diversche instrumenten” or “accommodées aussi bien à la voix comme à tous instruments musicaux”. It is clear that the vocal repertoire of the time was used not only in settings for groups of instruments and voices together but also by purely instrumental groups. We may further assume that the players gave first preference to the immediately available publications from their own local music presses.

The “vermaerde koopmansstadt Antwerpen” reached the summit of its economic and cultural growth around 1540. By this time it had grown into one of the most important Western European centres for the printing of music, one where the most famed composers had their works printed. Jehan Buys and Henry Loys were the first to publish polyphonic music in the Low Countries with their 1542 edition of Des chansons à quattre parties, composez par M. Benedictus. Their publishing house “In het Schaakspel” was to be found in the Kammenstraat, where most of the printers and booksellers of Antwerp had their offices. The composer Benedictus Appenzeller, whose three songs Viens tost, Se dire je l’osoie and Gentils galans are performed on this recording, was choir master to the Court Chapel of Maria of Hungary, who was the regent of the Low Countries at that time. of Cologne, who began his career as a music copyist in Antwerp, was virtually the first music publisher of the Low Countries to adopt the new technique of movable type. He had possibly drawn his inspiration from a collection entitled Selectissimae Cantiones dated 1540, in which he had been able to include his own first composition and which had been published in Augsburg by Melchior Kriesstein. This German volume also borrowed a setting by the above Appenzeller of the then enormously popular Flemish song Mins liefkens brun oghen. Susato was to publish more than twenty collections of songs in total, the first ten appearing in the space of just two years. His collection Le Second Livre des Chansons à quattre parties (1544) includes the song Pourquoy mest tu tant ennemie by Pierre de Manchicourt, the singing master of the church of St. Martin in Tours at that time.

Susato launched his series of volumes of motets in 1546 with the Liber Primus sacrarum cantionum quinque vocum; he included his own great motet of praise to Antwerp Salve quae roseo in the volume and this recording fittingly concludes with it. With the intention of “de hemelsche konst der musycken in onser nederlantscher moedertalen oock in ‘t licht te brengen”, he published Het ierste musykboexcken and Het tweetste musyckboexken in 1551. They contain for the most part anonymous four-part songs with Flemish texts, such as the songs Myn boel heet myn cleker bille and Lupus Hellinck’s Nieuwe Almanack, both of which are recorded here. Hellinck was a singing master from Bruges who composed this occasional piece for the festival of the Boy Bishop on Holy Innocent’s Day, writing probably for his own choir of the Sint-Donaaskerk. Susato had been named town piper of Antwerp in 1531 and his shop on the Stadtswaag was fittingly called “In den kromhoorn”. His book of dances, Het derde musyckboexken (1551) was regarded as being representative of the secular repertoire of the Antwerp town musicians. These musicians were always being asked by townspeople to perform above and beyond their civic duties at countless weddings, banquets, dances and suchlike occasions, all of these being moments for which the dance music that was published in Antwerp was superbly fitting. Susato’s third music book contains dances for instruments

in four-part arrangements, such as those for the Basse dansen, the Pavanes and the Galliardes.

As well as the many printed collections there is also a great quantity of music that has survived in manuscript form; such collections clearly reflect the taste of the collector, as can be seen in the Lerma Codex. This extensive collection contains pieces by 16th century Low Country, Italian and Spanish composers and was assembled at the beginning of the 17th century by command of the Duke of Lerma, the minister of King Philip III of Spain. From this collection we have included instrumental versions of two compositions, Justempus and Forbons, by Jacob Clemens non Papa, the choirmaster of the Sint-Donaaskerk in Bruges.

Petrus Phalesius the Younger moved from Leuven to Antwerp in 1581 and took up residence in “De Rode Leeuw” in the Kammenstraat. Together with printer Jan Bellerus he commenced a series of editions with the intention of popularising the Italian polyphonic style in the Low Countries. They published the Libro de villanelle, moresche et altri canzoni together with youthful works by Lasso in 1582, the first printing of which appeared a year later in Paris under the imprint of Le Roy & Ballard. From this collection of villanelles we have selected the popular four-part Matonna mia cara; this is better known as “The Landsknecht’s Serenade” and consists of a German soldier serenading his beloved in broken Italian. Phalesius’ firm created a number of successful anthologies, including his Armonia celeste (1593) from which we have selected the madrigal Ardo donna per voi by Andries Pevernage; the composer had been made singing master of the Antwerp cathedral in 1585 and had assembled the above anthology himself at Phalesius’ request. Phalesius nevertheless remained interested in instrumental music and the Antwerp book of dances Liber chorearum molliorum, otherwise known as the Recueil de danseries, rolled off his presses in 1583. From this collection we have chosen a number of Galliardes, Allemandes and Bransles, together with a Ballo milanese and a Hobokendans, whose titles indicate the use of local melodic material.

We have also selected the original Schiarazula Marazula, whose mangled title possibly relates to the Commedia dell’Arte. The Pavane & Galliarde de la bataille are clearly based upon an

eponymous vocal composition that describes a famous battlefield. This recording begins with the Passomezzo d’Anvers, into which an immediately recognisable tune has been worked and with which the Antwerp town players would identify themselves in processions in other towns; the town players of Liège would do the same with a piece such as the Allemande de Liège.

With the publication of Emanuel Adriaenssen’s Pratum musicum in 1584, Phalesius the Younger continued a tradition of his father; Petrus Phalesius the Elder has published a series of lute-books in Leuven between the years 1545-1575. The Antwerp lute collection contains mostly songs and dance tablatures, but in the guise of an introduction also includes five fantasias in free fugato style – clearly compositions by Adriaensen himself. From this collection we have chosen the Fantasia prima and the splendid Almande Nonette with variations, in which the title and melody vent the complaint of a fair and life-loving girl who must enter a convent against her will.

Le XVIe siècle fut pour Anvers un siècle d’or grâce à un développement du commerce, de l’industrie, des arts et des sciences. La ville portuaire devint alors l’entrepôt le plus important de l’Occident et de nombreux marchands et banquiers vinrent s’y fixer, de même que divers artisans. Le bien-être matériel entraîna un épanouissement culturel et, encouragés par l’administration communale, des savants et des artistes, et parmi eux des musiciens, vinrent s’établir dans la ville.

Ainsi, la musique profane instrumentale, le terrain des musiciens de ville, connut logiquement un essor considérable. À Anvers, ceux-ci s’étaient rassemblés au début du XVIe siècle dans la corporation de Saint-Job et entretenaient leur propre chapelle dans l’église Saint-Jacques. Au cours du XVIe siècle, un grand nombre de musiciens affluèrent vers la riche ville d’Anvers, où tant d’emplois leur étaient offerts. En effet, chaque moment du jour pouvait être l’occasion de célébrer un mariage, une fête ou de danser, et partout retentissait la musique vocale et instrumentale, mêlée à un joyeux brouhaha, comme le relata l’auteur italien Lodovico Guicciardini en 1567. De plus, la corporation de SaintJob fournissait les garanties nécessaires à tous ceux qui voulaient gagner leur pain par la pratique de la musique.

Les musiciens de la ville formaient un petit groupe privilégié et pour souligner leur statut, ils accompagnaient les magistrats dans leurs déplacements. Chaque soir, ils devaient sonner le départ ou la « levée » devant l’hôtel de ville, et cette manifestation s’appelait « les lauriers [lauweyt] des musiciens ». Ils intervenaient aussi à l’église ou à l’hôtel de ville, et en toutes sortes de circonstances : visites de dignitaires, Joyeuses Entrées et prestations de serment, succès militaires des princes régnants, traités de paix, cortèges et foires annuelles... À l’intérieur, pour les musiques de table à l’hôtel de ville, des instruments plus

doux nommés « bas instruments », comme la flûte à bec et le violon, pouvaient intervenir.

Pour les services extérieurs, le choix des instruments était arbitraire, mais le plus souvent, il s’agissait d’une formation connue sous le nom d’« alta capella » et qui réunissait, dans des formations variables, chalemie, cornet, bombarde, basson et trombone.

Quel était donc le répertoire de ces musiciens de ville ? Les sources parlent de « petits motets » et de « chansons »… La réponse est simple : les musiciens interprétaient ce qui leur tombait sous la main et était adapté à la situation. C’est ce qui ressort des titres des livres de chants polyphoniques, qui annoncent « à chanter ou jouer joyeusement sur divers instruments » ou « accommod[é]s aussi bien à la voix comme à tous instruments musicaux ». Il est évident que le répertoire vocal était aussi utilisé pour un usage vocal et instrumental, ou purement instrumental.

Vers 1540, la ville d’Anvers atteignit son apogée économique et culturel. Elle était devenue l’un des plus importants centres d’Europe de l’Ouest pour l’impression de la musique, et les compositeurs les plus réputés y faisaient publier leurs œuvres. En 1542, Jehan Buys et Henry Loys furent les premiers à faire éditer aux Pays-Bas une œuvre de musique polyphonique : Des chansons à quattre parties, composez par M. Benedictus.

Leur maison d’édition, « Au jeu d’échec », se trouvait rue des Peignes, où la plupart des imprimeurs et libraires anversois étaient établis. Le compositeur Benedictus Appenzeller, dont trois chansons, Viens tost, Se dire je l’osoie et Gentils galans, sont reprises ici, était maître de chœur à la chapelle de Marie de Hongrie, régente des Pays-Bas. Tielman Susato, de Cologne, qui débuta à Anvers comme copiste de musique, fut pratiquement le premier éditeur de musique des Pays-Bas à utiliser la nouvelle technique des caractères mobiles.

Peut-être trouva-t-il son inspiration dans un recueil de 1540, où il avait réussi à inclure sa première composition, publiée à Augsbourg par l’éditeur Melchior Kriesstein sous le titre Selectissimae cantiones.

Susato édita entre autres une vingtaine de recueils de chansons, dont les dix premiers

en à peine deux ans. Pourquoy mest tu tant ennemie de Pierre de Manchicourt, alors maître de chant à l’église Saint-Martin de Tours, est extraite du Second Livre des Chansons à quattre parties (1544). En 1546, Susato entama sa série de recueils de motets avec le Liber primus sacrarum cantionum quinque vocum, où se trouve le grandiose motet en l’honneur d’Anvers Salve quae roseo, dont il est également le compositeur.

Il publia en 1551 Het ierste musyckboexken et Het tweetste musyckboexken avec l’intention de « mettre aussi en lumière dans notre langue maternelle néerlandaise l’art céleste de la musique ». Ces deux livres contiennent principalement des chants anonymes à quatre voix sur des textes flamands, comme Nieuwe Almanack de Lupus Hellinck. Ce maître de chant brugeois composa ce chant de circonstance pour la fête de l’enfant-évêque le jour des Saints Innocents, sans doute pour sa chorale de l’église Saint-Donatien.

En 1531, Susato était déjà musicien de la ville d’Anvers et son magasin du Stadswaag s’appelait à juste titre « Au cromorne ». Son livret de danse Het derde musyckboexken (1551) est considéré généralement comme représentatif du répertoire profane des musiciens de la ville d’Anvers. En effet, ceux-ci étaient également sollicités, en dehors de leur travail pour la ville, par les bourgeois afin de jouer lors d’innombrables mariages, banquets, soirées dansantes... La musique dansante éditée à Anvers convenait parfaitement à ces circonstances.

Le Troisième Livre de musique de Susato comporte des danses instrumentales dans une harmonisation à quatre voix, parmi lesquelles des basses danses, des pavanes et des gaillardes.

Outre les nombreuses impressions de musique, toute une série de recueils de musique manuscrits ont été conservés, qui reflètent le choix personnel du collectionneur ; c’est le cas du Codex Lerma. Cette vaste anthologie comporte des œuvres de maîtres du XVIe siècle originaires des Pays-Bas du Sud, d’Italie et d’Espagne. Elles n’ont été rassemblées qu’au début du XVIIe siècle sur ordre du duc de Lerma, ministre du roi Philippe III. En

sont extraites les versions instrumentales de deux compositions : Justempus et Forbons de Jacob Clemens non Papa, maître de chœur de l’église Saint-Donatien de Bruges.

En 1581, le fils de Pierre Phalèse déménagea de Louvain à Anvers et s’installa au « Lion rouge », rue des Peignes. Il entama avec l’imprimeur Jan Bellerus une série d’éditions musicales dans l’intention de faire connaître la polyphonie italienne dans la région. En 1582, ils publièrent ensemble le Libro de villanelle, moresche et altri canzoni, qui contient des œuvres de jeunesse de Lassus, dont la première impression était parue un an plus tôt chez Le Roy et Ballard, à Paris. De ce livre de villanelles est interprété ici la populaire Matonna mia cara à quatre voix, mieux connue sous le nom de « Sérénade du lancier », où un soldat allemand s’adresse sa bien-aimée en mauvais italien.

Des presses de Phalèse sortirent nombre d’anthologies à succès, dont l’Harmonie céleste (1593), d’où est extrait le madrigal Ardo donna per voi d’Andries Pevernage. Ce compositeur, devenu maître de chant de la cathédrale d’Anvers en 1585, avait d’ailleurs constitué luimême cette anthologie à la demande de l’éditeur. Phalèse s’intéressait également à la musique instrumentale et publia le livre de danse Liber chorearum molliorum ou Recueil de danseries en 1583. De cette publication sont extraites une série de gaillardes, allemandes et branles ainsi qu’un Ballo milanese et la Hobokendans, dont les titres rappellent évidemment leur origine géographique.

Quant à l’énigmatique Schiarazula Marazula, son titre étrange est peut-être à mettre en rapport avec la commedia dell’arte. Le Pazzomezzo d’Anvers, qui revient deux fois dans cet enregistrement, est peut-être à considérer comme une pièce emblématique qui permettait aux musiciens de la ville de s’identifier en d’autres lieux, par exemple au sein des cortèges.

La publication, en 1584, du Pratum Musicum d’Emanuel Adriaenssen permit de perpétuer la tradition de Pierre Phalèse senior qui, à Louvain, dans les années 1545-1575, mit sur le marché une série de livres de luth. Le recueil de luth d’Anvers contient surtout des tablatures de chants et de danses, mais aussi, en guise d’introduction, cinq fantaisies

en style imitatif, des créations personnelles de l’auteur. De ce livre sont interprétées ici la Fantasia Prima et l’Almande Nonette avec variation. Celle-ci n’est autre qu’une adaptation de plus de la célèbre mélodie populaire italienne Madre non mi far Monnaca, dont le texte exprime la plainte d’une belle et vive jeune fille qui doit entrer au couvent contre son gré.

DE ANTWERPSE STADSSPEELLIEDEN. —

De 16de eeuw werd Antwerpens Gouden eeuw dank zij een hoogconjunctuur van handel, nijverheid, kunst en wetenschap. De havenstad werd toen het belangrijkste stapelhuis van het Westen en talrijke buitenlandse kooplui en bankiers kwamen er zich vestigen, evenals allerlei ambachtslui. De materiële welstand bracht een grote culturele opbloei teweeg en aangemoedigd door het stadsbestuur, kwamen geleerden en kunstenaars, dus ook musici, zich in de stad vestigen.

Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat de profane instrumentale muziek, die het terrein van de speellieden was, een geweldige opgang kende. De Antwerpse speellieden hadden zich bij het begin van de 16de eeuw verenigd in de gilde van Sint-Job en onderhielden een eigen kapel in de Sint-Jacobskerk. In de loop van de 16de eeuw kwamen er ontelbare speellieden toegestroomd naar het rijke Antwerpen, waar zoveel werkgelegenheid geboden werd.

Immers op elk uur van de dag waren er bruiloften, feesten en danspartijen aan de gang en overal weerklonken de tonen van instrumentale en vocale muziek, vermengd met vrolijk geroezemoes, zoals de Italiaanse auteur Lodovico Guicciardini het in 1567 verwoordde.

Bovendien bood de Antwerpse Sint-Jobsgilde de nodige corporatieve waarborgen voor al wie met muziek zijn brood moest verdienen.

Een kleine geprivilegieerde groep was die van de stadsspeellieden, die bij wijze van statussymbool, de wethouders begeleidden op hun verplaatsingen. Ook moesten ze elke avond voor het stadhuis de aftocht of levée blazen en die speelbeurt werd “het lauweyt van de stadspijpers” genoemd. Verder traden die op in de kerk en het stadhuis en daarbuiten bij alle mogelijke gelegenheden, zoals bezoeken van dignitarissen, Blijde Inkomsten en eedafleggingen, militaire successen voor het regerend vorstenhuis, vredesverkondigingen, ommegangen en jaarmarkten, enz. Binnen werden ook wel zachte instrumenten gebruikt,

zoals blokfluit en viool, o.a. bij de tafelmuzieken in het stadhuis. De instrumentale bezetting was willekeurig maar die van drie rietblazers en één trombone was toen de meest gebruikelijke voor de buitendiensten.

Wat stond er zoal op het repertoire van die stedelijke muzikanten, want in de overgeleverde bronnen wordt hoogstens van “motettekens” en “liedekens” gesproken? Het antwoord is zeer eenvoudig: de (stads)speellieden vertolkten alles wat hun onder de hand viel en paste voor de gelegenheid! Dat blijkt uit de titels van de gedrukte meerstemmige liedboeken, waarin men regelmatig kan lezen: “seer lustich om singen ende speelen op diversche instrumenten” of “accommodées aussi bien à la voix comme à tous instruments musicaux”. Het ligt dus voor de hand dat het vocale repertoire ook gebruikt werd voor gemengd vocaal-instrumentale bezetting maar ook louter instrumentaal spel.

Tegen 1540 bereikte de “vermaerde koopmansstadt Antwerpen” het toppunt van haar economische en culturele bloei. Inmiddels was ze uitgegroeid tot één van de belangrijkste Westeuropese centra voor de muziekdruk, waar de beroemdste componisten hun werken lieten drukken. In 1542 gaven Jehan Buys & Henry Loys als eersten in de Nederlanden een drukwerk met meerstemmige muziek uit: Des chansons à quattre parties, composez par M. Benedictus. Hun uitgeverij “In het Schaakspel” was in de Kammenstraat gelegen, waar toen de meeste Antwerpse drukkers en boekverkopers gevestigd waren. Componist Benedictus Appenzeller, van wie hier de drie chansons Viens tost, Se dire je l’ osoie en Gentils galans gezongen worden, was koraalmeester in de hofkapel van Maria van Hongarije, toen regentes van de Nederlanden. Tielman Susato van Keulen, die in Antwerpen als muziekkopiïst startte, was omzeggens de eerste Nederlandse muziekuitgever die de nieuwe techniek met beweegbare noottypes toepaste. Misschien had hij daarvoor zijn inspiratie gezocht in een verzameling van 1540, waarin hij zelf zijn eerste compositie had weten te plaatsen en die onder de titel Selectissimae cantiones, in Augsburg gepubliceerd werd door Melchior Kriesstein.

Susato gaf o.a., een twintigtal chansonbundels uit, waarvan de eerste 10 in amper twee

jaar tijd. Le Second Livre des Chansons à quattre parties van 1544 bevat o.a. Pourquoy mest tu tant ennemie van Pierre de Manchicourt, toen zangmeester van de Sint Martinuskerk in Tours.

In 1546 vatte Susato zijn reeks motettenbundels aan met het Liber primus sacrarum cantionum quinque vocum, waarin zich het grootse lofmotet op Antwerpen Salve quae roseo van hemzelf bevindt.

Met de bedoeling om “de hemelsche konst der musycken in onser nederlantscher moedertalen oock in ‘t licht te brengen”, publiceerde hij in 1551 Het ierste musyckboexken en Het tweetste musyckboexken. De inhoud bestaat meestendeels uit anonieme vierstemmige liederen op Vlaamse teksten, zoals de hier uitgevoerde Nieuwe Almanack van Lupus Hellinck. Deze Brugse zangmeester componeerde dit gelegenheidslied voor het feest van de kinderbisschop op Onnozele-Kinderdag vermoedelijk voor zijn eigen koralen van de Sint-Donaaskerk.

In 1531 had Susato het tot stadspijper van Antwerpen gebracht en zijn winkelhuis op de Stadswaag heette dan ook zeer toepasselijk “In den kromhoorn”. Zijn dansboekje Het derde musyckboexken van 1551 wordt over het algemeen als representatief beschouwd voor het profane repertoire van de Antwerpse stadsspeellieden. Deze werden immers buiten de stadsdienst ook nog door de burgers gevraagd om te spelen op ontelbare bruiloften, banketten, danspartijen, enz., waarvoor de in Antwerpen uitgegeven dansmuziek uitstekend geschikt was. Susato’s derde muziekboekje bevat instrumentale dansen in een vierstemmige bewerking, waaronder Basse dansen, Pavanes en Gaillardes. De populaire Naast de talrijke muziekdrukken bleven er ook heel wat muziekverzamelingen in handschrift bewaard, die de persoonlijke keuze van de aanlegger weerspiegelen zoals de Lerma Codex. Deze uitgebreide bloemlezing bevat werk van 16de-eeuwse Zuid-Nederlandse, Italiaanse en Spaanse meesters en werd pas bij het begin van de 17de eeuw in opdracht van de Hertog van Lerma, minister van koning Filips III, bijeengeschreven. Hieruit hoort men

de instrumentale versies van 2 composities, nl. Justempus en Forbons, van Jacob Clemens non Papa, koraalmeester in de Brugse Sint-Donaaskerk.

In 1581 verhuisde Petrus Phalesius jr. van Leuven naar Antwerpen en installeerde zich in “De Roode Leeuw” in de Kammenstraat. Samen met de drukker Jan Bellerus begon hij aan een reeks muziekuitgaven met de bedoeling om de Italiaanse polyfonie bij ons te verspreiden.

In 1582 publiceerde het duo het Libro de villanelle, moresche et altri canzoni met Italiaans jeugdwerk van Lassus en waarvan de eerste druk een jaar voordien in Parijs verschenen was bij Le Roy & Ballard. Uit dit villanellenboek wordt hier het populaire vierstemmige Matonna mia cara vertolkt, beter bekend als “de serenade van de lansknecht” en waarin een Duitse soldaat zijn geliefde toezingt in gebroken Italiaans.

Verder kwamen er in de Phalesiaanse officina een aantal succesvolle bloemlezingen tot stand, waaronder Harmonia celeste van 1593, waaruit het madrigaal Ardo donna per voi van Andries Pevernage voor deze opname gekozen werd. De componist, die in 1585 zangmeester van de Antwerpse kathedraal geworden was, had trouwens zelf de genoemde verzameling samengesteld in opdracht van de uitgever. Maar Phalesius schonk ook aandacht aan de instrumentale muziek en in 1583 rolde het Antwerps dansboek Liber chorearum molliorum oftewel Recueil de danseries van zijn persen. Daaruit zijn hier een aantal Gaillardes, Allemandes en Branles te beluisteren, naast een Ballo milanese en de Hobokendans, waarvan de titels wel op plaatsgebonden melodisch materiaal wijzen. Verder hoort men het originele Schiarazula Marazula, waarvan de verhaspelde titel mogelijk in verband staat met de Commedia dell’arte. In de Passomezzo d’Anvers, waarmee deze opname toepasselijk wordt ingezet, werd allicht een kenwijsje verwerkt, waarmee de Antwerpse speellieden zich in andere steden, bijvoorbeeld in ommegangen, konden identificeren.

Met de publicatie van het Pratum musicum van Emanuel Adriaenssen werd in 1584 de traditie voortgezet van Petrus Phalesius sr., die in de jaren 1545-1575 in Leuven een hele reeks luitboeken op de markt gebracht had. De Antwerpse luitbundel bevat hoofdzakelijk

lied- en danstabulaturen, maar bij wijze van inleiding, ook vijf fantasia’s in een vrij fugatische stijl, die zuiver persoonlijke creaties van de auteur waren. Uit het luitboek van Adriaenssen worden hier de Fantasia prima verklankt en de prachtige Almande Nonette met variatie, waarvan titel en melodie verwijzen naar de klacht van een mooi, levenslustig meisje dat tegen haar zin naar het klooster gaat.
