I was sixteen years old when I had the pleasure of reading Sances’ music for the first time, and I can only say that his music gripped me immediately: it is therefore hardly surprising that Scherzi Musicali have been performing the works of Giovanni Felice Sances from the beginning. Dulcis Amor Iesu (RIC 292), our second CD, was recorded in 2009 and was devoted to his motets; we now intend to do justice to his secular works.

From Rome to Vienna, via Venice Giovanni Felice Sances was born into a musical family in Rome around 1600; his father Orazio and his brother Lorenzo were both singers. The young Giovanni Felice joined the Collegium Germanicum in Rome in 1609, this being a Jesuit institution that included such brilliant composers as Stefano Landi and Girolamo Kapsberger amongst its pupils, to name but two, and Tomas Luis de Vittoria, Agostino Agazzari and Giacomo Carissimi amongst its maestri di cappella. Sances sang in the ballet Amor pudico that Cardinal Montalto caused to be given at the Palazzo della Cancelleria in February 1614. He was taken away from the college some two months later, an act that was to put his father behind bars for a short period. Sances then continued his career in Padua and in Venice, although we know very little of his doings during this time. The dedications on his published scores, however, provide us with the identity of some of his patrons: the Marquis Pio Enea Obizzi, Odoardo Pepoli, and Nicolò Sagredo, the future Venetian ambassador to the Imperial Court in Vienna. During this time he composed four volumes of secular vocal music, of which only two have survived: the second dates from 1633 and the fourth from 1636. It was also in 1636 that Sances composed the first opera to be given in a theatre open to the general public: this was L’Ermione and it marked the beginning of a glorious period of

Sances was to publish two other secular works during his Viennese period, although they were printed in Venice: these were the Capricci poetici (1649) and the Trattenimenti musicali per camera

commercial opera in Venice. The libretto was by his patron Pio Enea Obizzi, whilst Sances himself sang the role of Cadmus.

Sances’ life and career took an important new turn in 1637. He left the Veneto and travelled to Vienna, where he joined the Imperial Chapel as a tenor, in the service of the emperors Ferdinand II, Ferdinand III and, later, Leopold I. It appears that he swiftly took advantage of his somewhat privileged position: he was given lodgings at the Imperial court and also received a salary; this was also augmented by payments for the lessons he gave — he counted his own children amongst his pupils — and also received regular increases in salary. He soon became the best-paid singer of the Kapelle. He was appointed vice-Kapellmeister in 1649 and followed Antonio Bertali as Kapellmeister twenty years later. Once in charge of the Imperial Chapel, he instituted new rules and regulations, taking advantage of the situation to engage his own son Adam Felice as a bass. He also ensured that he was made a member of the nobility and that he received the same salary as had Bertali, to which he added the extra remunerations for his activities as teacher. His health soon began to decline; he took measures in 1673 to ensure that his sons would continue to be paid by Leopold I and that his daughter would still be able to reside at Court. As his health worsened, his professional obligations were fulfilled by his vice-Kapellmeister and later successor Johann Heinrich Schmelzer.

Sances died in 1679 and was buried in the Augustinerkirche in Vienna. He left an impressive quantity of compositions, having begun with secular works such as arias, songs and several operas, before continuing with sacred music; his works in this field included motets, masses, oratorios and Sepolcri. A considerable amount of his sacred music continued to be performed in the Imperial Chapel for several decades. His sacred music was also immensely popular outside the Court, as can be seen from its publication in several contemporary anthologies; it was also widely copied.

(1657), both of which require larger vocal and instrumental forces. The earlier volumes were mostly made up of arias for solo voice and continuo that described pastoral love affairs, although there were also a few duos.

Alongside these there were also four iconic dialoghi amorosi for two or three voices that described the amatory frolics of nymphs and shepherds, these being narrated by a Testo where necessary. These publications were very much a logical continuation of the tradition of the volumes of madrigals that Florentine composers had begun in 1600. The continuo line was only occasionally figured, although the vocal line had the alfabeto for Spanish guitar printed above it. The alfabeto is a standardised system of notation using capital letters and other symbols, these representing the positions of the chords most employed on the guitar; the volumes usually include a table of these symbols and their equivalents in tablature. The presence here of the alfabeto suggests that the publication of these arias was probably aimed at amateur players; it also enabled singers to accompany themselves. Although Sances was part of a tradition, he was also an innovator in several respects; we can regard him as one of the protagonists in the evolution of music that took place in northern Italy during the 1630s and 1640s.

Sances’ collections contain mostly cantate or cantade: this is also most likely one of the earliest uses of the term, although here it does not have its later meaning of a work in which recitatives and arias alternate; here it simply signifies a continuous work. Several of these pieces are indeed in stile recitativo, or rather should be termed passeggiate, as they are based on the progressive ornamentation of repeated verses. Sances gives the most dramatic of these the title of Lamento; on a lighter note, there are also Canzonette and Arie that are sometimes for two voices. We should also note that these few Dialoghi amorosi for several protagonists reveal that Sances had a true talent for operatic composition: it is truly unfortunate that L’Ermione, his sole opera, has been lost.

Music for pleasure How best to describe Sances’ music? The first word that comes to mind is sensuality. Certainly, his melodies are flowing and spontaneous; his harmonic language is very logical, even though at times it can be surprising or daring — it is clearly more modern than that of the previous generation. His phrase structure is well-balanced; his music breathes a natural elegance. But what would all this be if Sances had not imbued his music with sincere emotion and such touching expressivity? The listener will easily notice the abundance of passages in triple time

Love in all its forms Love is by far the most common theme in all of the texts that Sances set to music. There is nothing new in this, of course, except that his ways of treating it are highly varied. When an affair is going well, the lover devotedly sings of his fascination with his beloved’s eyes: the mention of anything round or circular — the eyes are described as living spheres, circles, convolutions, globes, stars, burning rubies etc. — cause Sances to write music in a dancing triple time that seems to twist and turn endlessly (Occhi, sfere vivaci). His lovers, however, are not always deceived. Chi nel regno almo d’Amore invites men to take love lightly, and thus to protect themselves from the suffering that love or fickle women might well inflict upon them. Another solution would be to run away from love: but alas, it pursues us everywhere and at every moment (Dove n’andrò); he who can avoid the amorous emotion and the pain it brings with it is truly wise (Viver trà pianti). Anyone who has not foreseen the danger will bitterly regret it. Whilst Lagrime tutte amare is still coloured with hope, death is at times the only answer to such suffering (Pietosi, allontanatevi). The chaconne Presso l’onde tranquille is introduced by an observer of the scene: he sees a young shepherd who has been rejected by his lover as he pours forth all his anger and bitterness in insults and threats. This highly charged energy caused Sances to compose one of the most bravura arias of all his secular works.

We should nonetheless take heart, for there are still times when it is good to dwell in Cupid’s realm. Both Lilla and Fileno gradually give themselves over to the intimate pleasures of love: certain piquant musical details

throughout the programme. It is, however, interesting to note how Sances counterbalances the stability of their form with syncopations, hemiolas and other displaced accents that are not always easy to predict: I would go so far as to say that he creates a groove, a swing that gives his music a particularly seductive freshness. The succession of different tempi makes these balancing effects as intoxicating as they are euphoric (Chi nel regno almo d’Amore and Occhi, sfere vivaci) or closer to a subtle bewitching swaying motion (Misera, hor sì ch’il pianto, Viver trà pianti, Filli mirando il cielo). Sances places great emphasis on his ostinato bass lines: these are not only the standard lines of the chaconne (Presso l’onde tranquille) and the passacaglia, but are also often original and highly inventive conceptions that he composed specially for the occasion (Misera, hor sì ch’il pianto).

also contribute to this. As for Phyllis and Thyrsis, they are prepared to do whatever is necessary to ‘die’ together; a certain Festauro plays the role of narrator here. Sances gives him a dramatic recitative, in which the intensity of the text inspires the composer to write one or two unexpected harmonies (“... disse con occhi languidi e tremanti”).

The misadventures of Angelica and Ruggiero, taken from Ariosto’s Orlando furioso, are also recounted by a narrator; as in Monteverdi’s Combattimento, he is here termed a Testo. Armed with a ring and a magic shield, the Saracen knight Ruggiero saves Angelica from the rock to which, naked, she had been chained by a sea monster who intended to make her his prey. Mounted on a hippogriff, they arrive in Lower Brittany: Angelica realises that Ruggiero intends to claim her favours as his reward and uses the magic ring to make herself disappear; Ruggiero is deeply hurt by such ingratitude. This is the most developed of Sances’ dialoghi amorosi, with an admirably planned dramatic construction. The narrator’s accounts — infectiously theatrical, rhetorical and as full of bravura as anyone could wish — are interspersed not only with interventions by Angelica and Ruggiero, but also by chorus-like passages for three voices in strophic form; these comment on the action in the same manner as the chorus in a Greek tragedy: this is certainly a remnant of Florentine influence from the 1600s. Sances frames the verses sung by this ensemble with ritornelli, although he merely indicates where they should occur; it was up to the musicians themselves to supply or to improvise them.

Artistic choices This project came into being more or less at the same time as Scherzi Musicali itself. Several of the pieces recorded here, such as Tirsi morir volea, have been part of our repertoire for many years; following on from this, our preparation of all of Sances’ vocal music gave us clear proof that the high quality of his music remained constant throughout his career. Choosing the pieces that would be recorded for this programme meant that we often had to exclude one or another musical jewel. Nonetheless, we have endeavoured to present a varied and yet representative sample of Sances’ secular vocal works, with strophic songs, arias, cantatas, lamenti and dialoghi amorosi. We have also taken the liberty of not recording every single verse (sometimes as many as fifteen) of a song, if Sances had not himself written out the music for each single verse.

The score’s frontispiece mentions the theorbo, the harpsichord, the harp (Sances himself was a harpist) or

any similar instrument; in effect, any instrument capable of realising a continuo line could be called upon to do so in a more or less interchangeable manner. Such other instruments included the Spanish guitar, which the alfabeto marked on the scores inevitably links with this repertoire. We have chosen the remainder of the instruments used in a historically plausible fashion, taking a chitarrino, an archlute, a lirone, an organ, a spinetta and two viols. The choices provided by such a range of timbres enabled us to choose the instruments for a piece exactly as a musician of the 17th century would have done, at times seeking contrasts in sound according to the various verses or to the affects in a recitative, at others searching for an idiomatic timbre that matched the musical writing.

It is eminently clear that the theorbos provided the foundation of the continuo group at that time; the two instruments used here, copies of the largest model of the instrument ever made in the 17th century, provide a delectable musical foundation. The guitar was required to play an essential role in this programme as well; we have gone as far as allowing it to assume full rhythmic control, to the point of using three guitars — two Spanish guitars, commonly called baroque guitars, and a chitarrino, a smaller instrument tuned a fourth higher than the other instrument and developed during the Renaissance — in the chaconne Presso l’onde tranquille and in the duo Occhi, sfere vivaci. The triple harp also plays a major role in our realisations, given that it expresses the sensuality of Sances’ music so well. The sound of the spinetta with gut strings is a perfect match with the sound of the plucked strings. It dialogues or is paired with the harpsichord, which here has two registers available per string, allowing the player to alternate the instrument’s traditional brilliant tone with a rounder sound produced by leather quills. An organo di legno, whose open pipes produce a full and rich sound, and a lirone, a large viola da gamba with thirteen strings whose flat bridge makes the playing of chords of three or four notes possible, are used to underline the drama and the deep emotions of the characters whenever required by the text. As for the viol, it is not confined to playing the bass line, but is an integral part of the continuo group; it is used not only for counterpoint in its own right but also to provide a line in the polyphonic structure.

In order to give a coherent form to the programme, we have also chosen two instrumental pieces by other composers who seem to have the most in common with Sances’ music; we have also taken the liberty of adapting them to the instruments mentioned above. Girolamo Viviani’s Passacaglia was originally composed for solo theorbo and is here joined by the harp; for Salomone Rossi’s more renowned Ruggiero — a Renaissance standard

whose title was the best introduction possible for the following dialogue — was composed for two violins and continuo. We decided that it would be interesting to have it performed in a version for plucked strings, thereby emphasising the development of the music’s rhetorical and rhythmic discourse with the most idiomatic combination of instruments possible.

The reader will certainly have understood that we are particularly attached to Sances’ music. Whilst he was undeniably successful during the 17th century, his rediscovery during the 20th century has been at a slow pace. One might have hoped that there would be much more interest shown in him, if only thanks to the several arias and duos that were included in Knud Jepessen’s magnificent collection of vocal works entitled La Flora that appeared in 1949, an honourable alternative to the omnipresent volumes of Arie antiche published by Ricordi. This CD is the second recording that chronicles our journey with Sances and his music; a journey that we have no intention of ending here.

C’est à l’âge de 16 ans que j’ai eu le plaisir de lire du Sances pour la première fois : autant dire que sa musique m’a séduit d’emblée. Peu étonnant donc que Giovanni Felice Sances accompagne l’ensemble Scherzi Musicali depuis ses débuts. Notre deuxième album enregistré en 2009 était déjà consacré à ses motets (Dulcis Amor Iesu, RIC 292) ; c’est à présent à sa musique profane que nous avons voulu faire honneur.

De Rome à Vienne, en passant par Venise Giovanni Felice Sances nait à Rome vers 1600. Son père Orazio et son frère Lorenzo sont tous deux chanteurs. Giovanni Felice intègre en 1609 le Collegium Germanicum à Rome, institution jésuite qui compte de brillants compositeurs parmi ses élèves (Stefano Landi et Girolamo Kapsberger, pour ne citer qu’eux) et ses maîtres de chapelle (Tomas Luis de Vittoria, Agostino Agazzari, Giacomo Carissimi, etc). En février 1614, Sances chante dans le ballet l’Amor pudico monté par le cardinal Montalto au Palazzo della Cancelleria. Deux mois plus tard, il est retiré prématurément du collège, acte qui vaudra d’ailleurs à son père un bref séjour derrière les barreaux. C’est alors à Padoue et Venise que Sances continue son parcours. On sait peu de choses de cette période. Les dédicaces de ses publications nous renseignent quelques-uns de ses patrons, tels que le marquis Pio Enea Obizzi, Odoardo Pepoli, ou encore Nicolò Sagredo, futur ambassadeur de Venise à la cour impériale de Vienne. Ces publications sont quatre livres de musique vocale profane, dont seuls deux nous sont parvenus : le second, daté de 1633, et le quatrième, de 1636. C’est également en 1636 que Sances écrit le premier opéra destiné à un théâtre public, initiant ainsi la glorieuse ère de l’opéra commercial vénitien : L’Ermione. Le livret est l’œuvre de son protecteur Pio Enea Obizzi, et le compositeur y tient lui-même le rôle de Cadmo.

1637 marque alors un tournant important dans la vie de Sances. Il quitte le Veneto pour intégrer la Chapelle impériale de Vienne comme ténor, successivement au service des empereurs Ferdinand II, Ferdinand III et plus tard Léopold Ier. Sances semble très vite bénéficier d’une situation plutôt privilégiée. Il reçoit un logement à la cour impériale et son salaire, agrémenté de rétributions pour ses activités pédagogiques (ses fils comptent d’ailleurs parmi ses élèves) et de régulières augmentations, font de lui le chanteur le mieux payé de l’institution musicale.

En 1649, il devient vice-kapellmeister, puis succède vingt ans plus tard à Antonio Bertali en tant que kapellmeister. À la tête de la Chapelle impériale, il instaure de nouvelles réglementations, assurant dans la foulée l’engagement de son fils Adam Felice comme basse. En outre, il prend soin d’être anobli et de percevoir le même salaire qu' Antonio Bertali, cumulé à la rétribution de son activité pédagogique. Sances, dont la santé décline, veille en 1673 à ce que ses fils continuent à percevoir une rémunération de l’empereur Léopold Ier, et que sa fille conserve un logement à la cour. Peu à peu, l’infirmité gagne le compositeur, dont les obligations professionnelles aux offices sont progressivement assurées par son vice-kapellmeister et futur successeur, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer.

Sances meurt en 1679 et est enterré dans l'Augustinekirche. Il laisse derrière lui une œuvre abondante, s’illustrant d’abord comme compositeur de musique profane (airs et chansons, quelques opéras), puis de musique sacrée (motets, messes, oratorios ou sepolcri…). De plus, une partie considérable de sa musique sacrée continue à être jouée à la Chapelle impériale durant plusieurs décennies. Elle connaît aussi un succès notoire en dehors de la cour, figurant dans diverses anthologies contemporaines et étant largement copiée.

Dialoghi amorosi La période vénitienne de Sances est exclusivement consacrée à la musique profane. Seul deux des quatre recueils de Cantade publiés par Sances nous sont parvenus. Durant sa période viennoise, Sances publie encore deux ouvrages profanes à Venise : Capricci Poetici (1649) et Trattenimenti musicali per camera (1657), dont l’effectif vocal et instrumental est plus important. Quant aux livres précédents, ils rassemblent majoritairement des airs à voix seule et basse continue qui mettent en scène des amours pastorales, mais aussi quelques duos.

En outre, quatre emblématiques « dialoghi amorosi », à deux ou trois voix, mettent en scène les ébats amoureux de nymphes et bergers, au besoin narrés par un Testo. Ces publications s’inscrivent très logiquement dans la

Une musique pour le plaisir Comment décrire la musique de Sances ? Le premier mot qui me vient à l’esprit est « sensualité ». Certes, ses mélodies sont fluides et spontanées. Son langage harmonique est très logique, bien que par moment surprenant ou « épicé », et déjà clairement plus moderne que celui de la génération précédente. La structure des phrases est équilibrée, et il se dégage de sa musique beaucoup de naturel, d’élégance. Mais que serait tout cela si Sances n’insufflait pas au travers de ses notes une émotion sincère et une expressivité si touchante ? Au fil du programme, l’auditeur constatera aisément l’abondance de passages au rythme ternaire. Il est par ailleurs intéressant d’y observer comment Sances contrebalance leur carrure stable par des contre-temps, hémioles et autres accents déplacés qui ne sont pas toujours prévisibles : il en naît, oserais-je dire, un groove, un swing qui confère à sa musique une fraîcheur particulièrement séduisante. La déclinaison des différents tempos rend ces effets de balancement tantôt enivrants,

tradition des livres de madrigaux qu’ont initiée les compositeurs florentins dès 1600. La basse continue est très sporadiquement chiffrée, mais dans de nombreux cas, la partie vocale est surmontée de l’alfabeto pour la guitare espagnole. L’alfabeto est un système de notation standardisé en lettres capitales et autres symboles, lesquels représentent les positions d’accords les plus usitées à la guitare ; les livres reprennent normalement la table de ces symboles et leurs transcriptions en tablature. La présence de cet alfabeto suggère que la publication de ces airs visait probablement un public amateur, permettant en outre aux chanteurs de s’accompagner eux-mêmes. S’il s’inscrit dans une tradition, Sances se montre innovant à plus d’un titre, et on peut voir en lui l’un des acteurs de l’évolution de la musique nord-italienne autour des années 1630-1640.

Les recueils de Sances comportent majoritairement des cantata ou cantada, et c’est probablement l’une des premières occurrences du terme – n’attendons pas encore pour autant la forme plus tardive où alternent airs et récitatifs, mais bien une composition continue. Certaines d’entre elles sont en stile recitativo ou passeggiate, car basées sur une ornementation progressive des strophes répétées. Sances qualifie les plus dramatiques de lamento ; dans un registre plus léger, nous trouvons des canzonette et des arie qui sont parfois à deux voix. En marge, les quelques dialoghi amorosi à plusieurs personnages font entrevoir en Sances un compositeur d’opéra brillant qui nous fait regretter son opéra L’Ermione, dont la partition est perdue.

voire euphoriques (Chi nel regno almo d’Amore et Occhi, sfere vivaci), tantôt plus proches d’un subtil déhanché envoûtant (Misera, hor si ch’il pianto, Viver trà pianti, Filli mirando il Cielo). Sances fait la part belle aux basses obstinées (motif d’accompagnement répété en boucle sur lequel se déploie la ligne mélodique) : non pas tant les standards, tels que l’incontournable basse de chaconne (Presso l’onde tranquille) ou de passacaille, mais très souvent des canevas originaux, plutôt inventifs d’ailleurs, qu’il écrit pour l’occasion (Misera, hor si ch’il pianto).

L’amour sous toutes ses formes Dans les textes que Sances met en musique, il s’agit majoritairement d’amour. Rien d’original, certes, mais les angles d’approche en sont assez variés. Quand tout va pour le mieux, un amant exprime avec dévotion sa fascination pour les yeux de celle qu’il aime : les allégories circulaires (les yeux sont ici sphères vives, cercles, circonvolutions, globes, étoiles, rubis ardents, etc) invitent Sances à écrire une musique ternaire dansante qui semble virevolter sans fin (Occhi, sfere vivaci). Mais les amants ne sont pas toujours dupes. Chi nel regno almo d’Amore invite les hommes à agir avec légèreté et ainsi se prémunir des souffrances que l’amour ou les femmes si changeantes risquent leur infliger. Une autre solution serait de fuir l’amour. Hélas, il nous poursuit en tout lieu et à toute heure (Dove n’andrò), et bien sage est celui qui parvient à éviter le sentiment amoureux et son lot de souffrances (Viver trà pianti). Qui n’a pas pressenti le danger peut amèrement le regretter. Si Lagrime tutte amare est encore teinté d’espoir, la mort est parfois l’unique réponse aux souffrances (Abisse, spallancatevi). La chaconne Presso l’onde tranquille est introduite par le spectateur de la scène : il voit un jeune berger délaissé déverser toute sa rancœur au travers d’insultes et de menaces. Cette énergie survoltée incite Sances à écrire l’un des airs les plus virtuoses de ses recueils profanes.

Mais, rassurons-nous, il fait tout de même parfois bon vivre dans le royaume du petit Cupidon. Par exemple, Lilla et Fileno s’adonnent peu à peu aux plaisirs intimes, et certaines formulations croustillantes ne manqueront pas de faire leur effet. Quant à Filli et Tirsi, ils sont prêts à tout pour pouvoir « mourir » ensemble. C’est un certain Festauro qui y joue un rôle de narrateur : Sances lui confie un récitatif plutôt dramatique, et l’intensité du texte suggère à Sances l’un ou l’autre accord inattendu « ... disse con occhi languidi e tremanti »).

Les mésaventures d’Angelica et Ruggiero, tirées de l’Orlando furioso de l’Arioste, sont également racontées

Nos choix artistiques La genèse de ce projet remonte à peu près aux débuts de l’ensemble Scherzi Musicali. Certaines de ses pièces, telle Tirsi Morir volea, nous accompagnent depuis des années. Par la suite, la lecture intégrale des chansons de Sances nous a montré à quel point sa production est d’une qualité constante. Choisir les pièces qui constitueraient le programme du CD a souvent rimé avec renoncer à un petit bijou. Nous avons toutefois veillé à montrer de Sances un éventail varié et représentatif de sa musique profane : chansons strophiques, airs, cantates, lamenti et dialogues amoureux. Lorsque Sances n’a pas explicitement réécrit la musique des différentes strophes (jusqu’à une petite quinzaine !), nous avons pris la liberté de ne pas en enregistrer l’intégralité.

Pour l’accompagnement, le frontispice de la partition évoque le théorbe, le clavecin, la harpe (dont Sances jouait lui-même), ou tout autre instrument similaire ; il était en effet usuel de faire usage de tout instrument capable de réaliser une basse continue, et ce, de façon relativement interchangeable. Ces autres instruments étaient donc par exemple la guitare espagnole, que l’alfabeto sur les partitions associe inévitablement à ce répertoire. Nous avons complété l’instrumentarium de façon historiquement plausible, avec un chitarrino, un archiluth, un lirone, un orgue, une epinette et deux violes. Toutes ces couleurs nous ont offert la possibilité d’instrumenter les pièces

par un narrateur – ici appelé Testo, comme dans le Combattimento de Monteverdi. Armé d’un anneau et d’un bouclier magiques, le chevalier sarrasin Ruggiero délivre Angelica du rocher où un monstre marin l’a enchaînée nue pour en faire sa proie. Sur le dos d’un hippogriffe, ils arrivent en Basse-Bretagne ; voyant alors Ruggiero enclin à se faire récompenser par la chair, elle profite de l’anneau magique pour disparaître aux yeux du chevalier, laissant Ruggiero blessé par si peu de reconnaissance. C’est là le plus développé des « dialogues amoureux » de Sances, dans lequel la dramaturgie est assez admirablement architecturée. Les récits d’une théâtralité jouissive, rhétoriques et virtuoses à souhait, sont entremêlés de quelques interventions de deux protagonistes, mais aussi de « chœurs » strophiques à trois voix, lesquels commentent l’action comme le ferait le chœur d’une tragédie grecque — voyons-y aisément une trace des Florentins de la génération 1600. Sances encadre les strophes de ces ensembles vocaux par des ritournelles dont il ne fait cependant qu’évoquer la présence : il revient donc certainement aux musiciens de l'élaborer ou de l'improviser.

comme l’aurait fait un musicien au seicento, cherchant tantôt un son contrasté selon les strophes ou les affects dans les récitatifs, tantôt une couleur idiomatique en adéquation avec l’écriture.

De toute évidence les théorbes constituent le fondement du continuo pour l'époque (les deux instruments copiés d’après le plus grand modèle jamais conçu au XVIIe siècle donnent une assise délectable). La guitare se devait de jouer un rôle essentiel dans ce programme, et nous avons même pris le parti de pleinement en assumer le rebond rythmique, allant jusqu’à trois guitares (deux guitares espagnoles – communément appelées guitares baroques – et un chitarrino – une plus petite guitare, à la quarte supérieure de la précédente, telle que développée à la Renaissance) dans la chaconne Presso l’onde tranquille et le duo Occhi, sfere vivaci. La harpe triple joue également un rôle prépondérant dans notre exécution, tant elle rend justice à la sensualité de la musique de Sances. Le son de l'épinette cordée en boyau s’est intégré au mieux dans cet univers de cordes pincées. Le clavecin qui lui répond ou s’y associe est ici muni de deux registres sur une même corde, permettant d’en alterner la traditionnelle couleur brillante avec un son plus rond produit par des becs en cuir. Un organo di legno (dont les tuyaux dits « ouverts » produisent un spectre sonore riche et plein) et un lirone (viole de gambe large à treize cordes dont le chevalet plat permet de jouer des accords à trois ou quatre sons) soulignent le drame ou l’émotion viscérale quand le texte nous y invite. Quant à la viole, elle ne se cantonne pas à un rôle d’instrument de basse, mais fait partie intégrante des instruments qui réalisent le continuo, endossant un rôle tantôt polyphonique, tantôt contrapuntique.

Afin de structurer le programme, nous avons choisi deux pages instrumentales qui nous semblaient répondre au mieux à la musique de Sances. Nous avons pris la liberté de les adapter à l’effectif instrumental de notre programme. C’est le cas de la Passacaglia de Girolamo Viviani, originalement pour théorbe solo – ici rejoint par la harpe –, et du plus célèbre Ruggiero (standard de la Renaissance, dont le titre introduisait au mieux le dialogue qui le suit), écrit pour deux violons et basse continue par Salomone Rossi : il nous a en effet paru intéressant de la faire entendre dans une version par des cordes pincées, et d’en souligner l’évolution du discours rhétorique et rythmique par la combinaison instrumentale la plus idiomatique.

Le lecteur l’aura compris, la musique de Sances nous tient fort à cœur. Si son succès au XVIIe siècle est indéniable, la redécouverte de ce compositeur au cours du XXe siècle se fait malheureusement bien timide.

Ce présent album constitue dès lors un second témoignage discographique de notre parcours avec Sances, parcours que nous ne souhaitons bien entendu pas arrêter ici.

Mit sechzehn Jahren hatte ich das Vergnügen, zum ersten Mal Noten von Sances zu lesen: Seine Musik bezauberte mich sofort. Daher ist es kaum erstaunlich, dass Giovanni Felice Sances das Ensemble Scherzi Musicali von Anfang an begleitet. Unser zweites Album, das wir 2009 aufzeichneten, war bereits seinen Motetten gewidmet (Dulcis Amor Iesu, RIC 292); nun wollten wir seine weltliche Musik würdigen.

Von Rom über Venedig nach Wien Giovanni Felice Sances wurde um 1600 in Rom geboren. Sein Vater Orazio und sein Bruder Lorenzo waren beide Sänger. Giovanni Felice besuchte ab 1609 das Collegium Germanicum in Rom, eine Jesuiteninstitution, die brillante Komponisten zu ihren Schülern (u.a. Stefano Landi und Girolamo Kapsberger) und zu ihren Kapellmeistern (Tomas Luis de Vittoria, Agostino Agazzari, Giacomo Carissimi usw.) zählte. Im Februar 1614 sang Sances im Ballett Amor pudico, das vom Cardinal Montalto im Palazzo della Cancelleria aufgeführt wurde.

Zwei Monate später wurde er von der Lehranstalt genommen, was dem Vater übrigens einen kurzen Aufenthalt im Gefängnis einbrachte. Sances setzte danach seine Laufbahn in Padua und Venedig fort. Über diese Zeit ist sehr wenig bekannt. Die Widmungen seiner Veröffentlichungen informieren uns über einige seiner Dienstherren wie den Marquis Pio Enea Obizzi, Odoardo Pepoli oder Nicolò Sagredo, den künftigen Botschafter Venedigs am Kaiserhof von Wien. Bei diesen Veröffentlichungen handelt es sich um vier Bände weltlicher Vokalmusik, von denen uns nur zwei erhalten sind: Der zweite ist auf das Jahr 1633 datiert und der vierte auf 1636. Ebenfalls im Jahr 1636 schrieb Sances die erste Oper, die für ein öffentliches Theater bestimmt war und mit der er die

Dialoghi amorosi In der Zeit, die Sances in Venetien verbrachte, widmete er sich ausschließlich der weltlichen Musik. Nur zwei der vier Bände der von Sances herausgegebenen Cantade sind uns erhalten. Während seiner Wiener Zeit veröffentlichte Sances noch zwei weitere profane Werke in Venedig: Capricci poetici (1649) und Trattenimenti

ruhmreiche Zeit der „kommerziellen“ venezianischen Oper einleitet: L’Ermiona. Das Libretto ist das Werk seines Gönners Pio Enea Obizzi, und der Komponist interpretierte selbst die Rolle des Cadmo.

1637 stellte einen bedeutenden Wendepunkt im Leben von Sances dar. Er verließ Venetien, um als Tenor in die kaiserliche Hofkapelle von Wien einzutreten, wo er nacheinander im Dienst der Kaiser Ferdinand II., Ferdinand III. und später Leopold I. stand. Sances scheint sehr rasch eine privilegierte Situation zugute gekommen zu sein. Er erhielt eine Unterkunft am Hof, ein Gehalt, zu dem Bezahlungen für seine pädagogischen Tätigkeiten hinzukamen (seine Söhne zählten übrigens zu seinen Schülern) und regelmäßige Gehaltserhöhungen, die ihn zum bestbezahlten Sänger dieser musikalischen Einrichtung machten. 1649 wurde er Vizekapellmeister und zwanzig Jahre später in der Nachfolge von Antonio Bertali Kapellmeister. Als Leiter der kaiserlichen Kapelle führte er neue Regeln ein und sicherte gleichzeitig das Engagement seines Sohns Adam Felice als Bass. Außerdem sorgte er dafür, in den Adelsstand erhoben zu werden und das gleiche Gehalt wie Antonio Bertali zu bekommen, das zur Bezahlung seiner Lehrtätigkeit hinzukam. Als Sances Gesundheitsprobleme hatte, achtete er darauf, dass seine Söhne weiterhin von Kaiser Leopold I. bezahlt wurden und seine Tochter eine Unterkunft bei Hof behalten konnte. Nach und nach wurde seine Behinderung so groß, dass seine beruflichen Verpflichtungen allmählich von seinem Vizekapellmeister und zukünftigen Nachfolger, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, übernommen wurden.

Sances starb 1679 und wurde in der Augustinerkirche begraben. Er hinterließ ein reichhaltiges Werk, bei dem er sich zunächst als Komponist weltlicher Musik (Arien und Lieder, einige Opern) einen Namen machte, dann geistlicher Musik (Motetten, Messen, Oratorien oder Sepolcri usw.). Außerdem wurde ein ansehnlicher Teil seiner geistlichen Musik jahrzehntelang weiterhin an der kaiserlichen Kapelle aufgeführt. Sie hatte auch außerhalb des Hofes offenkundigen Erfolg, denn sie ist in verschiedenen zeitgenössischen Anthologien zu finden und wurde sehr oft kopiert.

musicali per camera (1657), deren vokale und instrumentale Besetzung größer ist. Was die vorherigen Bände betrifft, so enthalten sie zum Großteil Arien für Solostimme und Basso continuo, die pastorale Liebesgeschichten aber auch einige Duette in Szene setzen. Unter anderen schildern vier emblematische „Dialoghi amorosi“ zu zwei oder drei Stimmen die verliebten Tändeleien von Nymphen und Hirten, die wenn notwendig von einem Testo erzählt werden. Diese Veröffentlichungen gehören logischerweise zur Tradition der Madrigalbücher, die von den Florentiner Komponisten ab 1600 eingeführt wurden. Der Basso continuo ist sehr sporadisch beziffert, aber in vielen Fällen steht über dem Vokalpart das Alfabeto für die spanische Gitarre. Das Alfabeto ist ein standardisiertes Notationssystem in Großbuchstaben und anderen Symbolen, die die meistgebrauchten Akkordgriffe der Gitarre angeben. Die Bände übernehmen normalerweise die Liste dieser Symbole und ihre Tabulatur-Transkription. Die Verwendung dieses Alfabeto lässt darauf schließen, dass die Veröffentlichung dieser Arien sich wahrscheinlich an Amateurmusiker wenden und außerdem den Sängern die Möglichkeit verschaffen wollte, sich selbst zu begleiten. Zwar folgen die Werke einer Tradition, doch zeigt sich Sances in mehrfacher Hinsicht innovativ, so dass man in ihm einen jener Musiker sehen kann, denen die Entwicklung der norditalienischen Musik in den Jahren um 1630/40 zu verdanken ist.

Die Sammlungen von Sances enthalten zum Großteil Cantata oder Cantada, wobei es sich wahrscheinlich um eines der ersten Male handelt, bei denen dieser Ausdrucks verwendet wurde – dennoch darf man hier noch nicht die spätere Form erwarten, bei der Arien und Rezitative abwechseln, sondern eine kontinuierliche Kompositionsweise. Einige davon sind im Stile recitativo oder passeggiate genannt, denn sie bauen auf einer zunehmenden Verzierung der wiederholten Strophen auf. Sances bezeichnet die dramatischsten als Lamento.

In einem leichteren Tonfall finden wir Canzonette und Arie, die manchmal für zwei Stimmen geschrieben sind. Daneben lassen die Dialoghi amorosi für mehrere Figuren Sances als einen brillanten Opernkomponisten erkennen und bedauern, dass seine Oper Ermione verlorengegangen ist.

Eine Musik zum Vergnügen Wie könnte man die Musik von Sances beschreiben? Das erste Wort, das mir in den Sinn käme, ist „Sinnlichkeit“. Sicher sind seine Melodien fließend und spontan. Seine harmonische Sprache ist logisch,

Die Liebe in allen ihren Formen In den Texten, die Sances vertont, handelt es sich zum Großteil um Liebe. Das ist nicht originell, doch die Perspektiven sind ziemlich abwechslungsreich. Wenn alles bestens ist, drückt ein Liebhaber andächtig seine Faszination für die Augen seiner Liebsten aus: Die kreisförmigen Allegorien (die Augen sind hier lebendige runde Flächen, Kreise, Windungen, Kugeln, Sterne, glühende Rubine usw.) laden Sances dazu ein, eine ternäre, tänzerische Musik zu schreiben, die endlos herumzuwirbeln scheint (Occhi, sfere vivaci). Doch die Liebenden lassen sich nicht immer täuschen. Chi nel regno almo d’Amore fordert die Männer auf, leichtfertig zu handeln und sich so vor den Leiden, die ihnen die Liebe oder die unbeständigen Frauen zufügen könnten, zu schützen. Eine andere Lösung wäre es, die Liebe zu meiden. Doch ach, sie verfolgt uns an jeden Ort und zu jeder Stunde (Dove n’andrò), und weise ist der, dem es gelingt die Gefühle der Liebe und ihre Leiden zu vermeiden (Viver trà pianti).

Wer die Gefahr nicht ahnt, kann dazu gebracht werden, es zu bedauern. Gibt es in Lagrime tutte amare noch eine

obwohl sie manchmal überraschend oder „würzig“ ist und deutlich moderner als die der vorigen Generation.

Die Struktur der Phrasen ist ausgeglichen, und von seiner Musik geht eine große natürliche Eleganz aus. Doch was wäre all das, wenn Sances seiner Musik nicht eine ehrliche Emotion und eine berührende Expressivität einhauchen könnte? Im Laufe des Programms wird der Zuhörer leicht feststellen, wie viele Passagen einen ternären Rhythmus aufweisen. Im übrigen ist es interessant zu beobachten, dass Sances ihr stabiles Format durch Synkopen, Hemiolen und andere verschobene Akzente ausgleicht, die nicht immer vorhersehbar sind: Dadurch entsteht, möchte ich sagen, ein Groove, ein Swing, der seiner Musik eine besonders betörende Frische gibt. Die Abwandlung der verschiedenen Tempi lässt diese Schwingeffekte manchmal berauschend, ja sogar euphorisch erscheinen (Chi nel regno almo d’Amore und Occhi, sfere vivaci), manchmal eher einer subtilen, betörenden Hüftbewegung nahe (Misera, hor sì ch’il pianto, Viver trà pianti, Filli mirando il cielo). Sances begünstigt dabei die Bassi ostinati (ein in Endlosschleife wiederholtes Begleitmotiv, über dem sich eine Melodielinie entfaltet): aber nicht so sehr mit Standards wie dem unumgänglichen Chaconne- (Presso l’onde tranquille) oder Passacaglia-Bass, sondern sehr oft mit originellen, eher einfallsreichen Motiven, die er für diese Gelegenheit schreibt (Misera, hor sì ch’il pianto).

Spur Hoffnung, ist der Tod manchmal die einzige Antwort auf die Qual (Pietosi, allontanatevi). In die Chaconne Presso l’onde tranquille wird man vom Beobachter der Szene eingeführt: Er sieht einen jungen, verlassenen Hirten, der all seinem Groll durch Beschimpfungen und Drohungen freien Lauf lässt. Diese überreizte Energie veranlasst Sances, eine der virtuosesten Arien dieser weltlichen Sammlungen zu komponieren.

Aber beruhigen wir uns, manchmal ist es doch angenehm, im Reich des kleinen Cupidos zu leben. So geben sich Lilla und Fileno nach und nach intimen Freuden hin, und unweigerlich erzielt dabei so manche pikante Formulierung einen Effekt. Was Filli und Tirsi betrifft, so sind sie zu allem bereit, um gemeinsam zu „sterben“; ein gewisser Festauro spielt dabei die Erzählerrolle: Sances vertraut ihm ein ziemlich dramatisches Rezitativ an, wobei die Intensität des Textes Sances zu dem einen oder anderen unerwarteten Akkord inspiriert („... disse con occhi languidi e tremanti“).

Das Missgeschick von Angelica und Ruggiero aus Orlando furioso von Ariost wird ebenfalls von einem Erzähler geschildert – der hier wie im Combattimento Monteverdis Testo genannt wird. Mit einem Zauberring und einem – schild bewaffnet, befreit Ruggiero, ein sarazenischer Ritter, Angelica vom Felsen, wo sie ein Meeresungeheuer ankettete, um sie zu seiner Beute zu machen. Auf dem Rücken eines Greifs gelangen sie in die Südbretagne; als sie jedoch merkt, dass Ruggiero geneigt ist, sich dafür fleischlich belohnen zu lassen, nutzt sie den Zauberring, um unsichtbar zu werden, und den über solche Undankbarkeit verletzten Ruggiero zurückzulassen.

Es handelt sich um den am meisten fortgesponnenen der „Liebesdialoge“ von Sances, in dem die Dramaturgie recht bewundernswert aufgebaut ist. Die Berichte einer erfreulichen, rhetorischen und virtuosen Theatralität, wie man sie sich nur wünschen kann, sind mit einigen direkten Beiträgen der beiden Hauptfiguren, aber auch mit dreistimmigen, strophischen „Chören“ durchsetzt, die die Handlung kommentieren, wie es der Chor einer griechischen Tragödie tun würde – man erkennt darin leicht eine Spur der Florentiner Generation von 1600.

Sances umrahmt die Strophen dieser Vokalensemble mit Ritornellen, deren Vorhandensein er allerdings nur erwähnt: Es ist somit sicher Sache der Musiker, sie auszuarbeiten oder zu improvisieren.

Unsere künstlerischen Entscheidungen Die Entstehung dieses Projekts geht ungefähr auf die Anfänge des Ensembles Scherzi Musicali zurück.

Einige dieser Stücke wie z.B. das Tirsi morir volea begleiten uns seit Jahren. Als wir später in sämtliche Lieder von Sances Einblick nahmen, zeigte es sich, in welchem Maß seine Werke qualitativ gleichwertig sind. Die Auswahl der Stücke, die dieses CD-Programm bilden sollten, glich somit oft dem Verzicht auf ein kleines Juwel. Wir achteten dennoch darauf, ein abwechslungsreiches, repräsentatives Spektrum der weltlichen Musik von Sances zu zeigen: Strophenlieder, Arien, Kantaten, Lamenti und Liebesdialoge. Wenn Sances nicht ausdrücklich die Musik der verschiedenen (manchmal bis an die fünfzehn) Strophen schrieb, nahmen wir uns die Freiheit, nicht alle aufzunehmen.

Für die Begleitung erwähnt das Titelblatt der Partitur die Theorbe, das Cembalo, die Harfe (die Sances selbst spielte) oder jedes andere ähnliche Instrument; tatsächlich war es damals üblich, jedes Instrument einzusetzen, auf dem man den Basso continuo in relativ unveränderter Form spielen konnte. Solche Instrumente waren zum Beispiel die spanische Gitarre, die das Alfabeto der Partituren unausweichlich mit diesem Repertoire verbindet.

Wir ergänzten das Instrumentarium nach einem historisch plausiblen Gesichtspunkt mit einem Chitarrino, einer Erzlaute, einem Lirone, einer Orgel, einem Spinett und zwei Gamben. All diese Klangfarben boten uns die Möglichkeit, die Stücke so zu instrumentieren, wie es ein Musiker des Seicento gemacht hätte, der bald gemäß den Strophen oder den Affekten in den Rezitativen einen kontrastreichen Klang suchte, bald eine idiomatische Klangfarbe, die mit dem Text übereinstimmt.

Für diese Zeit ist es ganz offensichtlich, dass die Theorben die Grundlage des Continuos bildeten (die beiden Instrumente, die nach dem größten Modell nachgebaut wurden, das je im 17. Jh. gebaut wurde, sind ein vorzügliches Fundament). Die Gitarre musste in diesem Programm eine wesentliche Rolle spielen, und wir entschieden uns sogar dafür, voll für ihren rhythmischen Elan einzustehen, indem wir in der Chaconne Presso l’onde tranquille oder im Duette Occhi, sfere vivaci bis zu drei Gitarren verwendeten (zwei spanische Gitarren – allgemein Barockgitarren genannt – und einen Chitarrino – eine kleinere Gitarre, wie sie in der Renaissance entwickelt wurde, die gegenüber der vorigen eine Quart höher ist). Auch die Tripelharfe spielt in unserer Interpretation eine maßgebliche Rolle, da sie der Sinnlichkeit von Sances’ Musik so sehr gerecht wird. Der Klang des mit Darmsaiten bespannten Spinetts fügt sich bestens in dieses Ambiente gezupfter Saiten. Das Cembalo, das ihm antwortet oder sich mit ihm verbindet, hat hier zwei Register auf derselben Saite und erlaubt die

traditionelle, brillante Klangfarbe mit einem runderen Ton abzuwechseln, der von Lederplektren erzeugt wird.

Ein Organo di legno (dessen als „offen“ bezeichnete Pfeifen ein reiches, volles Klangspektrum hervorbringen) und ein Lirone (eine breite Viola da gamba mit dreizehn Saiten dessen flacher Steg es ermöglicht, Akkorde von drei oder vier Tönen zu spielen) heben das Drama oder die tiefe Emotion hervor, wenn der Text dazu einlädt. Was die Gambe betrifft, so begnügt sie sich nicht mit ihrer Rolle als Bassinstrument, sondern gehört ganz zu den Continuo-Instrumenten, wo sie bald eine polyphone, bald eine kontrapunktische Aufgabe übernimmt.

Um dem Programm eine Struktur zu verleihen, wählten wir zwei Instrumentalwerke, die der Musik von Sances am besten zu antworten schienen. Wir nahmen uns die Freiheit, sie der Instrumentalbesetzung unseres Programms anzupassen. Das ist der Fall bei der Passacaglia von Girolamo Viviani, die ursprünglich für Solotheorbe geschrieben ist – zu der hier die Harfe hinzukommt – und des berühmteren Ruggiero (eines Standards der Renaissance, dessen Titel den darauffolgenden Dialog am besten einleitet), der von Salomone Rossi für zwei Geigen und Basso continuo geschrieben wurde: Es schien uns nämlich interessant, das Stück in einer Fassung für Zupfinstrumente zu Gehör zu bringen und die Entwicklung des rhetorischen und rhythmischen Diskurses durch die idiomatischste Instrumentalkombination hervorzuheben.

Dem Leser ist sicher klar geworden, dass uns die Musik von Sances sehr am Herzen liegt. Ist ihr Erfolg im 17. Jh. nicht zu leugnen, so war die Entdeckung dieses Komponisten im Laufe des 20. Jh. leider viel zögerlicher.

Dabei hätte man ein größeres Interesse für diesen brillanten Komponisten voraussetzen können, und das dank einiger Arien und Duette, die bereits in den berühmten Gesangsbänden „La Flora“ von Knud Jepessen 1949 enthalten waren – eine musikwissenschaftlich gesehen sehr ehrenwerte Alternative zu den unvermeidlichen „Arie Antiche“, die bei Ricordi erschienen waren. Das vorliegende Album bildet demnach ein zweites diskografisches Zeugnis unserer Auseinandersetzung mit Sances, die wir selbstverständlich damit nicht beenden möchten.
