THE ACADEMY OF 23 MARCH 1783  I assure you, this is a magnificent place – and the best place in the world for my profession, without a doubt – everyone will tell you this.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is describing the city of Vienna in a letter to his father dated 4 April 1781. This sentence, however, is actually a postscript to the letter, in which he had already described everything that he was doing in Vienna and all of the things that he had been able to find out about musical life in the city, including how much money he might earn. He also described the difficulties that he was encountering with Archbishop Colloredo of Salzburg (whom he nicknamed the Archbooby), for the Archbishop was doing all that he could to have Mozart return to his service in Salzburg. He concludes his postscript with the words “I feel well here, and can therefore give of my best. Be assured that my only idea is to earn as much money as possible; it is the best thing that there is, after good health”.

Mozart had only been in Vienna for a short time. His opera Idomeneo had been greeted with success at its premiere in Munich on 29 January, with his father Leopold and his sister Nannerl in the audience.

These two then returned to Salzburg at the beginning of March; Mozart himself set out for Vienna and arrived there at 9am on 16 March. He was in fact simply obeying orders, for the Archbishop of Salzburg was in Vienna at that time and had summoned his musicians to join him. On his arrival, he was given a pleasant room in the house where the Archbishop himself was in residence. At 4pm he was required to take part in a concert that the Archbishop had arranged for some twenty members of Viennese high

nobility. Matters moved swiftly: despite his father’s reproaches, Mozart decided to leave the Archbishop’s service and to settle in Vienna. He would earn his living through concerts, commissions and the giving of piano lessons to several pupils, who were mostly young ladies of the Viennese nobility. This refusal of a safe position with a court or a church was very much a new phenomenon, especially for a young musician who was not yet as well-established as were some of his colleagues; one of these was Christoph Willibald Gluck, with whom Mozart was to be in regular contact at the beginning of his time in Vienna.

What form would these concerts, these Academies as Mozart terms them, have taken? Mozart had already realised the importance of concerts organised officially in Paris in 1778, when his Parisian Symphony was given its first performance in one of the Concerts Spirituels. There was, however, nothing like that in Vienna. Academies there were organised in several ways, as can be seen from a listing of those in which Mozart took part after his arrival in Vienna: 3 April 1781 for the Widows’ Benefit at the Kärntnertortheater; 8 April 1781 for the German House; 23 November 1781 for the Auernhammers, where he performed the Concerto for two pianos KV 365 and most likely the Sonata for two pianos KV 448 with his pupil Josepha Barbara Auernhammer; 3 March 1782 at the Burgtheater; an unknown date in December 1782 for the Minister Plenipotentiary Dimitri Michailovich Galitzine. Except for the Academy at the Auernhammers’, which was for an invited audience, Mozart’s contributions to these concerts was limited; these appearances, however, together with the premiere of his Entführung aus dem Serail on 16 July 1782, soon made his name better-known. He shifted lodgings several times before finding a grander apartment in July; here he would set up house with Constance Weber, whom he was to marry on 4 August 1782, despite his father’s disapproval.

He was then finally able to organise his own Academy in Vienna, his first full-scale recital in which

he could present his works in all their variety of genre and mood. This took place on 23 March 1783.

He had already taken part in an Academy organised by the soprano Aloysia Lange a few days earlier on 11 March and was to do the same for the soprano Theresa Teyber on 30 March; in return for this they agreed to appear in his own Academy. Mozart described the success of the venture in a letter dated 29 March: “I don’t think that I need to tell you all about the success of my Academy, for you have probably already heard people talking about it. In a nutshell, the theatre could not have been fuller and all of the boxes were taken. What delighted me the most was that His Highness the Emperor was also present and he was most happy and did not cease to applaud me. He sent twenty-five ducats, for the custom is that he sends a sum of money before leaving for the theatre; if it had been afterwards I would have expected more, because his satisfaction was immense”. Mozart then listed the works that were performed at this extremely long concert as follows: our version of this concert for this recording is somewhat shorter.

1. “The new Haffner symphony”.

It was expected that Mozart would include a new symphony in each of these large-scale concerts or Academies. He knew the genre well, having composed his first symphony in London in 1764 and having written more than thirty more in the years preceding his arrival in Vienna, although the form seemed to hold no particular interest for him any more. The few symphonies of this period in Vienna were composed primarily for these concerts, as the inclusion of a symphony was clearly required by their audiences. One such work was the Symphony in C major KV 425, composed over a period of four days in Linz in November 1783. Mozart describes the work in a letter dated 31 October: «Since I have no symphony of any type with me, I have dived into the composition of a new symphony and am now up to

my ears in it, since it has to be finished extremely soon». It may have well been under the same pressure of circumstances that he was required to compose another new symphony for Prague in December 1786, some three years after Linz. It is clear, however, that he was soon to reassess the importance of the form, as he then went on to compose what many consider to be the greatest examples of the form, his three final symphonies in E flat major, G minor and C major (the «Jupiter») during the summer of 1788, and without any concert planned for their performance.

To return to March 1783, Mozart needed a symphony. The success of his Entführung aus dem Serail in 1782 had led to a commission from Siegmund Haffner, the burgomaster of Salzburg, who wished to mark his elevation to the nobility. Mozart had already composed a Serenade (KV 250) for Haffner in 1776: he had only reluctantly accepted this commission and was never to finish it properly; only the work’s ‘symphonic’ movements were composed, with no second minuet, no march, and no concertante movements. As a result, the Serenade was not performed in Salzburg and Mozart had composed his thirty-fifth symphony without realising it. He then decided to include it in this Academy. According to his letter of 29 March, he mentions the symphony twice: once as Nr. 1 “the new Haffner Symphony” and again as Nr. 10, “the final movement of the symphony from the start of the concert”. This could mean either that the finale was played only at the end of the concert, or that it was to be repeated as a type of encore. For this reconstruction of the concerts, given that our programme is somewhat shorter than the original, we have decided upon another solution: Nr. 1 is simply the first movement of the symphony, which has something of the character of an overture and functions perfectly as such here. The three remaining movements are placed at the end of the concert, as if they were part of a concluding divertissement.

2. Madame Lange sang ‘Se il padre perdei’, the aria with four obbligato instruments from my Munich opera.

Madame Lange was born Aloysia Weber; Mozart had met her and fallen in love with her in Mannheim in 1778, when he was 22 and she was 16. She possessed a splendid coloratura soprano and inspired him to compose some of his most spectacular concert arias, including the formidable Popolo di Tessaglia KV 316 with its high Gs – one full tone higher than the high Fs he would compose for the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte. The Weber family moved to Vienna in 1780, at which time Mozart met two of Aloysia’s sisters, Constanze (his future wife) and Maria Josepha (the first Queen of the Night). Aloysia had married Joseph Lange, an actor and painter; it was he who painted the famous unfinished portrait of Mozart. Aloysia was always to remain one of Mozart’s favourite singers.

This aria from Idomeneo clearly held a special place in Mozart’s affections. His description of the aria as the one “with four instruments” is particularly interesting. When he composed Idomeneo for Munich, he knew that it would be the Mannheim orchestra that would play it; Karl Theodor, the Elector of the Palatinate, had become Prince-Elector of Munich and his orchestra had followed him there. The leading soloists of the orchestra had become close friends with Mozart when he had met them in Mannheim in 1778 and he had also met several of them again in Paris later that year, where they were appearing as soloists in the Concerts Spirituels. Mozart knew, therefore, that he could count on such splendid woodwind players as the flautist Jean-Baptiste Wendling, the oboist Friedrich Ramm and the bassoonist Georg Wenzel Ritter - and it was clearly of them that he was thinking as he composed this aria for Ilia, to be sung by Dorothea Wendling, the wife of the flautist. Mozart’s orchestral writing had become much more refined when he came to compose Idomeneo and the woodwind are given a much greater role in this aria,

rd 3. “I played the 3 of the concertos I composed on subscription”.

The symphony was not a particular source of inspiration for Mozart at this time, although the piano concerto certainly was: in this form he too could express himself. Just like the singers in his arias, he could provide brilliant display as well as emotion. Of the twenty-seven concertos that he composed, fifteen of them were composed in Vienna. After the first performances of Entführung aus dem Serail in July, he clearly began a period of concentration on this form in which he excelled and which he had somewhat abandoned; he composed three new concertos (A major KV 414, F major KV 413 and C major KV 415) between October 1782 and January 1783. One of the new means of earning money that Mozart was considering was the sale of his compositions; at the beginning of 1783 Mozart attempted to raise a subscription to have these concertos printed and sold in a single volume, with the result that an advertisement to this effect appeared in the Wiener Zeitung on 15 January 1783. This particular project, however, was a failure; Leopold blamed its lack of success on the high price set by Wolfgang. Mozart later offered them to Seiber, the Parisian publisher, although the this too was unsuccessful.

The Concerto in C major KV 415 seems to have been one of his favourites, as he performed it again at the Academy given by Theresa Teyber on March 30. This is the only concerto of the three that calls not only for oboes, horns and bassoons but also for two trumpets and timpani. Does this necessarily make a concerto more majestic in character? We have only to observe how the concerto begins and how it concludes. It may well have been the influence of his study of Bach’s fugues – the baron Van Swieten

all four entering into dialogue with the vocal line. As for Mozart’s choice of the aria itself, it is tempting to see it as an implicit statement of Mozart’s love for his father.

had introduced him to them © that led him to precede the forte of the introduction with a few bars for strings alone in which a theme is presented in fugal form by the first violins, the second violins, the violas and finally the cellos and basses. We should also mention the sheer originality of the third movement: it too ends pianissimo, as if the soloist and the orchestra were leaving on tiptoe. This concerto contains many surprising features, one of which, along with the pianissimo ending, provides yet another contradiction of the generally lively and impulsive character of the rondo finales of piano concertos of the time: there are two adagio sections in the minor key. A rondo will usually have one of these, but it will most often appear after several repeats of the principal theme in the character of the principal theme; here, however, this section appears immediately. It is an ornamented version of the adagio, where the strings play pizzicato, that will return just before the final reprise of the theme; this is an unusual choice, as the music for the penultimate section is generally rapid in character. This mysterious introduction, the tenderness of the slow movement and the two adagio passages in the final Rondo all give the impression that Mozart’s thought were on past events.

4. “Adamberger sang the scena I composed for la Paumgarten”.

Mozart particularly appreciated the voice and work of the tenor Johann Valentin Adamberger, who had created the role of Belmonte in his Entführung aus dem Serail. The Paumgarten, as Mozart cheekily called her, was none other than the mistress of the Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria. We may suppose that her technical command was acceptable, for Mozart dedicated the concert aria Misera dove son! – Ah! non son’ io che parlo KV 369 to her. The aria poses no extraordinary technical challenges, avoiding the rapid passagework and spectacular high notes that he included for other soloists such as the Weber sisters.

6. “I played the concerto in D major that is such a favourite here, the one for which I composed the replacement Rondeau and that I sent to you”.

A second concerto, and once again a composition from his Salzburg period – and not just any concerto, but his first true keyboard concerto, the 5th, which he most probably played on the harpsichord.

His previous keyboard concertos had been arrangements of movements of keyboard sonatas by Johann Christian Bach and by various French composers. His comment “that is such a favourite here” is because

5. “The small sinfonia concertante from my last Final Musique”.

Another souvenir of Mozart’s time in Salzburg, and again a serenade dated 1779. This was the final work of this type that he composed in Salzburg, although whoever commissioned it or its recipient remains unknown. It may well simply have been a divertissement composed for the court of the Prince-Archbishop. The serenade is better known as the Posthorn Serenade KV 320, its nickname coming from the use of a posthorn in the second trio of the second minuet. Commentators have in general followed Albert Einstein’s hypothesis that the work represents Mozart’s desire to leave Salzburg as soon as possible on the mail-coach. This serenade is unusual in that the concertante movements are not composed for strings but for an octet of wind instruments: two flutes, two oboes, two horns and two bassoons, with the first oboe and the first flute taking the leading roles. We may well imagine that he was thinking of Wendling and Ramm, his friends from Mannheim, as he composed this, and that this too was also a way of indicating his desire to be gone. This would also explain the pleasure he took at including this “farewell” music in this Academy. After the Andantino that we have included here, Mozart went on to compose a Rondo concertante for exactly the same group of instruments. Might this too have been performed on 23 March 1783?

he had already played the concerto twice before, on 3 March 1782 and 11 March 1783. For this, its third performance, he replaced the concluding Allegro with a more brilliantly developed Rondo in the form of an irresistible theme and variations. We are very far indeed from the more sombre ending of the other concerto — this work’s brilliant conclusion was guaranteed to create enthusiastic applause.

7. “Mademoiselle Teyber sang a scena from my last opera in Milan, Parto, m’affretto”.

It is clear that Mozart wanted to programme works from the beginning of his career in this concert.

This is an extract from Lucio Silla, his opera that was first performed in Milan on 25 December 1772; the dramatic and theatrical possibilities of this opera are still being rediscovered. Here he entrusted the role of Giunia, originally sung by Anna de Amicis-Buonsolazzi, to Theresa Teyber; this may well have been a way of thanking her for having invited him to perform in her own Academy a week later.

8. “My only solos were a short fugue (because the Emperor was there) and an improvised set of variations on an aria from the opera Les Philosophes. I then had to play an encore and so I improvised variations on the aria Unser dummer Pöbel meint from the opera Les Pèlerins de la Mecque”.

In the middle of all of the concertos and orchestral works, Mozart concentrated on improvisation for his all-important solo keyboard performance. He first mentions the “short fugue (because the Emperor was there)”. This should not be particularly surprising, because he had met Baron Gottfried Van Swieten shortly after his arrival in Vienna; Van Swieten was an informed music lover who knew and appreciated the works of the great composers of the previous century, Johann Sebastian Bach and George Friderik Handel in particular. Mozart soon shared his enthusiasm for these two composers, and in particular for the perfection of Bach’s fugues; this passion was to find one of its most perfect expressions in the last movement of his Symphony Nr.

He began to explore this repertoire deeply in the spring of 1782, making transcriptions of Bach’s fugues for strings and also beginning to construct his own fugues; these were sometimes only sketched out and were also often in style that was very close to Bach’s own. A Prelude and Fugue in C major was the result of all this experimentation. Mozart planned to compose another five to make a series of six for a planned volume that he would dedicate to Van Swieten. He could well have performed one of these pieces at this concert, although knowing what we do of his sense of humour, we have chosen to include one highly individual fugue: a short Gigue that he improvised when he played Bach’s organ in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig in May 1789.

“Because the Emperor was there”. Like the majority of his predecessors, Joseph II was a music lover and also a musician; his own teacher was none other than Antonio Salieri, the court’s Master of Music.

Joseph II love music passionately and followed the young Mozart’s career with great interest; as proof of his belief in the young Mozart’s talent, he commissioned him to write his Entführung aus dem Serail shortly after Mozart’s arrival in Vienna. It was therefore hardly surprising that Mozart would thank the Emperor for his presence at his Academy by performing a work that was seemingly improvised expressly for the Emperor’s expert ears.

The theme and variations form gave a skilled keyboard player of the period the best opportunities to display his particular talents; the young Ludwig van Beethoven would delight his Viennese audiences with similar works several years in the future. Mozart continued to compose in this form throughout his career, although it is certain that the works that have survived make up only a small part of what he actually would have improvised during his concerts.

His first improvisation in this Academy was on the aria Salve tu Domine from Giovanni Paisiello’s opera I filosofi immaginarii. The opera was also known as Gli astrologi immaginarii and had been first

performed in St. Petersburg in 1779, after which it was revived in a French translation for performance in Paris the following year. We may wonder whether it might have been performed in Vienna at the beginning of the 1780s — the fact that the autograph manuscript of the opera was preserved in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek could well support this idea — and it is also difficult to imagine that Mozart would choose to improvise variations on a theme that was unfamiliar to his audience. Paisiello, who composed almost one hundred operas, was in any case in Vienna the following year. Mozart transcribed these variations into the form that we know them (KV 398) during the months that followed the concert on 23 March.

The operas of Christoph Willibald Gluck were well-known in Vienna, given that the composer had lived there for some twenty years between 1752 and 1774. Amongst many other works he also composed pastiches of French opéra comique; Les pèlerins de la Mecque ou la rencontre imprévue was his most famous work in this genre and was first performed in the Burgtheater in Vienna in January 1764. Such works undoubtedly added lustre to Gluck’s reputation in Paris, where he worked from 1774 to 1779. He then returned to Vienna, appalled by the Parisian disputes and cabals of which he had been the victim. He returned to Vienna almost at the same time as Mozart arrived there; the two men met on several occasions and Gluck was also present at this particular concert. There was nothing more normal, then, than Mozart should improvise on a theme from another highly popular opera of the period. The title of the opera is given in German; it is highly likely, given that the Emperor was encouraging the creation of operas in German, that the Viennese had taken up the translated version that had been used for performances of the opera in Frankfurt in 1772. Mozart transcribed these variations only in 1784, the following year.

10. “The last movement of the symphony that we played at the beginning.”

The last movement of the symphony that opened the evening signalled the end of this concert that summed up Mozart’s career to date; Mozart had shown the best of himself as both composer and performer and had been accompanied by the best musicians and soloists available. The Emperor had been present and, unusually for him, he had remained for the entire concert. Gluck was also present. Ramm, Ritter and Wendling, Mozart’s friends from Mannheim were missing, although they were present in spirit thanks to the important role that their wind instruments were given in the programme. Salieri may well have concealed himself in a box in order to admire and to fulminate in silence, as he was presented to us in Miloš Forman’s film Amadeus.

The second CD of this set includes recordings of the overtures to Don Giovanni and to Die Zauberflöte made at an earlier session by the Millennium Orchestra.

9. “The Lange sang my new Rondeau”.

This concert aria was composed especially for Aloysia Lange, née Weber, on 8 January 1783. It was certainly written for the Academy of 11 January in which she took part, having just returned from a concert tour. For Mozart, this was a moment to create a new work that was perfectly suited to the woman whom he had loved in Mannheim — he could hardly have forgotten her — and her splendid dramatic and musical talent.

Soyez assuré que je n’ai qu’une idée, gagner autant d’argent que possible ; car après la santé, c’est ce qu’il y a de mieux. » Cela fait bien peu de temps que Wolfgang est arrivé à Vienne. Son opéra Idomeneo a été créé avec succès à Munich le 29 janvier, en présence son père Leopold et de sa sœur Nannerl. Début mars, ceux-ci rentrent à Salzbourg ; quant à Wolfgang, il voyage vers Vienne, où il arrive le 16 mars à 9 heures. En fait, il a tout simplement répondu à l’ordre de l’archevêque de Salzbourg qui séjourne à Vienne et qui souhaite que ses musiciens le rejoignent. D’ailleurs, à son arrivée, il est hébergé dans une « chambre charmante dans la maison où loge l’archevêque ». À 4 heures, il doit déjà participer à un concert offert par son patron à une vingtaine de personnes « de la plus haute noblesse ». Les événements vont s’accélérer : malgré les reproches de son père, Wolfgang décide quitter le service de Colloredo et de s’installer à Vienne. Ses moyens de subsistance

seront les concerts, les commandes et aussi – pour une part non négligeable – les leçons de piano qu’il donne à plusieurs élèves, principalement des jeunes femmes de la haute société viennoise. Ce refus d’une situation stable de musicien attaché au service d’une cour ou d’une église est un phénomène bien neuf, surtout pour un musicien dont la réputation n’est pas encore aussi bien établie que celle de certains de ses collègues, comme Christoph Willibald Gluck, avec qui, d’ailleurs, il va entretenir des relations très suivies au début de son séjour viennois.

Mais comment imaginer ces concerts, que Mozart nomme dans ses lettres des « académies » ? À Paris, en 1778, Mozart a pu se rendre compte de l’importance des concerts organisés de façon officielle, par exemple ceux du Concert spirituel où a été créée sa nouvelle symphonie (la Parisienne). Ici, rien de tout cela.

Ces académies sont organisées de diverses manières. Il suffit de recenser les quelques académies auxquelles il participe, dès son arrivée à Vienne : 3 avril 1781 (Le concert des veuves au Kärntnertortheater), 8 avril 1781 (Maison allemande), 23 novembre 1781 (chez les Auernhammer, où il joue avec son élève Josepha Barbara le Concerto pour deux pianos K 365 et sans doute la Sonate pour deux pianos K 448), 3 mars 1782 (Burgtheater), [?] décembre 1782 (chez le ministre plénipotentiaire Dmitri Michaïlovitch Galitzine)… Mis à part l’académie chez les Auernhammer, devant un parterre d’invités choisis, Mozart y participe chaque fois pour une petite part. Mais toutes ces apparitions, puis la création de L’Enlèvement au Sérail le 16 juillet 1782, contribuent à accroître sa réputation. À plusieurs reprises, il change de logement, pour s’installer finalement en juillet dans un appartement plus cossu dans lequel il va pouvoir constituer son foyer familial avec Constance Weber, qu’il épouse le 4 août 1782 (malgré l’avis négatif prononcé par Leopold).

Il peut donc enfin organiser à Vienne sa propre académie, son premier grand concert au cours duquel il pourra se présenter au public de la capitale dans toutes sortes de domaines.

Cela se passe au Burgtheater le 23 mars 1783. Quelques jours plus tôt, le 11 mars, il a participé à une académie organisée par la soprano Aloysia Lange et le 30 mars, il répond, de la même façon, à l’invitation de la soprano Theresa Teyber, deux solistes à qui il rend la monnaie en les engageant pour sa propre académie. Le 29 mars, Mozart décrit le succès de l’entreprise dans une lettre adressée à son père : « Je crois qu’il n’est pas très nécessaire que je vous raconte le succès de mon académie, vous en aurez peut-être déjà entendu parler. Bref le théâtre n’aurait pas pu être plus rempli et toutes les loges étaient occupées. Ce qui m’a fait le plus plaisir, c’est que Sa Majesté l’empereur était également présent, que son plaisir fut grand et qu’il n’eut de cesse de m’applaudir. Il est d’usage qu’il envoie l’argent à la caisse avant de se rendre au théâtre, sinon j’aurais pu en attendre plus, car sa satisfaction était sans borne. Il a envoyé 25 ducats. » Ensuite, Mozart détaille le programme de ce très long concert. Le voici donc, dans son intégralité. La version de concert qui en a été tirée a été raccourcie. « 1. La nouvelle symphonie Haffner. » On s’en rendra compte, dans chacun de ses grands concerts (académies), Mozart est tenu d’inclure une symphonie. Ce genre, il le connaît bien – sa première symphonie a été écrite à Londres en 1764 – et durant les années qui précèdent son arrivée à Vienne, il en écrit plus de 30. Mais le genre ne semble plus le passionner. Les quelques symphonies de la période viennoise sont avant tout des « obligations » pour doter ces concerts de cette forme visiblement bien ancrée dans les habitudes. C’est le cas par exemple de la Symphonie en ut majeur K 425 écrite en quatre jours à Linz en novembre 1783. Il en parle dans une lettre du 31 octobre : « Et comme je n’ai pas avec moi la moindre symphonie, je me suis plongé, jusque par-dessus la tête, dans une nouvelle Symphonie qui doit être achevée d’ici là. » Est-ce pour les

circonstances identiques d’un concert à Prague, en décembre 1786, que, trois ans après la Linz, il se doit d’écrire une nouvelle symphonie ? Certes, il est certain qu’il va se ressaisir sur l’importance du genre en écrivant en quelques semaines, durant l’été 1788, et ici sans concert prédestiné, ce que l’on peut considérer comme une apothéose du genre, les trois dernières symphonies (mi bémol majeur, sol mineur et do majeur, Jupiter).

Revenons donc en mars 1783. Il lui faut une symphonie. En 1782, après le succès de L’Enlèvement au Sérail, il reçoit une commande de Sigmund Haffner, le bourgmestre de Salzbourg, pour célébrer son anoblissement. En 1776, Mozart a déjà écrit une Sérénade pour Haffner (K 250). C’est du bout des doigts qu’il accepte cette commande, qu’il n’achèvera finalement pas : seuls les mouvements de « symphonie » seront écrits. Pas de second menuet, pas de marche, pas de mouvements concertants. Finalement, la sérénade commandée n’est pas jouée à Salzbourg et Mozart a ainsi écrit, inconsciemment, sa trente-cinquième symphonie ! Il va donc l’inclure dans son académie. Mais comment ? À la lecture de la lettre du 29 mars, il évoque deux apparitions de la Symphonie, une en n° 1, « la nouvelle Symphonie Haffner » et l’autre en n° 10, « le dernier mouvement de la symphonie du début »… Cela veut-il dire que ce final a été joué seulement à cette place ou qu’il a été donné en guise de « bis » ? En ce qui concerne notre reconstitution, avec ce programme finalement donné dans une version plus courte que le concert original nous en sommes arrivées à une autre suggestion. C’est seulement le premier mouvement de la symphonie qui est joué en n° 1, ce qui fonctionne parfaitement en guise d’ouverture (dont ce mouvement en possède le caractère !). Les trois autres mouvements sont placés en fin de concert, un peu comme un divertissement (presque une musique de ballet).

« 2. Madame Lange a chanté l’aria avec quatre instruments tirée de mon opéra de Munich, Se il padre perdei. » Madame Lange, c’est Aloysia Weber, que Mozart a rencontrée à Mannheim en 1778 et dont il est tombé amoureux. Elle avait 16 ans à cette époque, Wolfgang 22. Elle dispose d’une merveilleuse voix de soprano colorature qui inspirera le compositeur pour quelques-uns de ses plus imposants airs de concerts, dont le redoutable Popoli di Tessaglia K 316, culminant au contre-sol aigu (un ton plus haut que ce qu’il écrira pour le célèbre rôle de la Reine de la Nuit dans La Flûte enchantée). En 1780, la famille Weber est installée à Vienne ; c’est là qu’il va rencontrer deux des sœurs d’Aloysia, Constanze (sa future épouse) et Maria Josepha (la créatrice du rôle de la Reine de la Nuit). Aloysia, qui a épousé Joseph Lange, comédien et peintre (c’est lui qui fera le célèbre « portrait inachevé de Mozart), restera l’une des voix préférées de Mozart.

Cet air d’Idomeneo doit certainement occuper une place très particulière dans la mémoire de Mozart.

Le fait qu’il mentionne un air « avec quatre instruments » est important. Lorsqu’il écrit Idomeneo pour Munich, il sait que l’orchestre qui va interpréter son œuvre n’est autre que celui de Mannheim. En effet, l’électeur palatin Karl Theodor est devenu prince-électeur à Munich : son orchestre l’a suivi. Les principaux solistes de l’orchestre sont devenus des amis très intimes de Mozart ; il les a rencontrés à Mannheim en 1778, puis en a retrouvés certains, la même année, lors de son séjour parisien (ils ont brillé comme solistes au Concert spirituel). Mozart sait donc qu’il peut compter sur de remarquables virtuoses des instruments à vent : le flûtiste Jean-Baptiste Wendling, le hautboïste Friedrich Ramm, le bassoniste Georg Wenzel Ritter… C’est à eux évidemment qu’il pense en écrivant cet air d’Ilia, qui sera créé par Dorothea Wendling, l’épouse de l’ami flûtiste. Depuis Idomeneo, son écriture orchestrale s’est affinée et le rôle accordé aux instruments à vent en dialogue avec la voix s’est accru. Quant au choix de cet air, faut-il y voir en filigrane une déclaration cachée d’amour paternel ?

« 3. J’ai joué le troisième de mes concertos en souscription. » Si la symphonie n’est pas le genre qui le passionne le plus à cette époque, le concerto pour piano fait bien partie d’une catégorie privilégiée ; il faut reconnaître que c’est dans ce domaine, à l’instar des chanteurs, qu’il peut, lui aussi, briller et émouvoir, bref, s’exprimer. Sur les 27 concertos que contient son catalogue, 15 sont écrits à Vienne. Visiblement, après la création de L’Enlèvement au Sérail au mois de juillet, il se concentre un moment sur ce genre dans lequel il excelle et qu’il a un peu laissé de côté ; c’est entre octobre 1782 et janvier 1783 qu’il écrit trois nouveaux concertos (la majeur K 414, fa majeur K 413 et ut majeur K 415). Au début de l’année, Mozart tente de réaliser une souscription pour la vente d’un recueil de ces trois concertos.

L’annonce passe dans le Wiener Zeitung le 15 janvier. Mais visiblement, cette souscription est un échec, que Leopold semble attribuer au prix trop élevé demandé par Wolfgang. Voilà la trace d’un des nouveaux moyens de subsistance auquel il pense : la vente de ses compositions. Plus tard, il les proposera à l’éditeur parisien Sieber, une offre qui n’aura pas de suite.

Le concerto en ut majeur est semble-t-il devenu l’un de ses préférés. Il le rejoue d’ailleurs le 30 mars à l’académie de Theresa Teyber. Des trois concertos de cette trilogie, c’est le seul qui fait appel, en plus des hautbois, cors et bassons, à deux trompettes et timbales. Cela en fait-il un concerto plus majestueux ?

Pas nécessairement. Il suffit d’observer la façon dont ce concerto commence et comment il finit. Est-ce l’influence de tout son travail sur les fugues de Bach, qu’il vient de découvrir par l’intermédiaire du baron van Swieten, qui l’incite à faire précéder le forte de l’introduction par quelques mesures confiées aux cordes seules sous forme de traitement fugué d’un motif énoncé par les premiers violons, les seconds violons, puis enfin les altos et les basses ? Et que dire de l’originalité de la fin du troisième mouvement qui, lui aussi, se termine sur une nuance de pianissimo, comme si le soliste et l’orchestre partaient sur la pointe

des pieds ? Les surprises sont nombreuses dans ce concerto. En voici une assez surprenante, qui vient (avec cette fin sur la pointe des pieds) contredire le caractère généralement primesautier et vif des rondos finaux de concertos : la présence de deux couplets « adagio » en mineur. En général, un rondo peut en contenir un, mais il apparaît après plusieurs refrains dans la dynamique du refrain. Ici, il apparaît comme premier couplet. C’est une version ornementée de cet adagio, où les cordes jouent en pizzicato, qui revient juste avant le denier retour du refrain, donc occupant la place de dernier couplet, en général réservée à un caractère rapide.

Cette introduction mystérieuse, la tendresse du mouvement lent, les deux passages adagio du rondo final ne sont-ils pas des éléments qui font penser que Mozart se perd dans des souvenirs ? « 4. Adamberger a chanté la scène de la Paumgarten. » Johann Valentin Adamberger est un ténor que Mozart apprécie particulièrement. Il est entre autres le créateur du rôle de Belmonte dans L’Enlèvement au Sérail. La « Paumgarten », comme Mozart la nomme assez rudement, n’est autre que la maîtresse de l’électeur Karl Theodor de Bavière. On peut supposer qu’elle doit avoir une jolie technique vocale, puisque Mozart lui a dédié l’air de concert Misera dove son! – Ah! non son’io che parlo K 369. Évidemment, l’air n’est pas trop ardu, évitant les traits d’agilité trop rapides ou les notes trop aiguës auxquelles il peut penser pour d’autres solistes comme Aloysia ou Theresa ! « 5. La petite symphonie concertante de ma dernière Final Musique. » Revoici un souvenir de la période de Salzbourg, à nouveau une sérénade, datée de 1779. C’est la dernière pièce du genre qu’il écrit dans la capitale épiscopale, sans que l’on connaisse le destinataire ou le commanditaire.

« 6. J’ai joué le concerto en ré majeur qu’on aime tant ici, et dont je vous ai envoyé le Rondeau de rechange. » Un deuxième concerto, à nouveau une composition de l’époque de Salzbourg, et pas n’importe laquelle : son véritable premier concerto pour clavier, le 5e (il l’a plus que vraisemblablement joué au clavecin). Tous les concertos précédents sont des arrangements de mouvements de sonates de clavier, d’abord de Johann Christian Bach, ensuite de compositeurs français. S’il stipule « qu’on aime tant ici », c’est qu’il l’a déjà joué à Vienne, lors de l’académie du 3 mars 1782 puis lors de celle du 11 mars 1783. À cette occasion, il remplace l’Allegro final par un Rondo plus brillant, plus développé sous forme d’un irrésistible thème et variations. Ici, on est bien loin du côté plus sombre du final de l’autre concerto et la brillante conclusion ne peut qu’entraîner des applaudissements fournis !

Serait-ce simplement un divertissement pour le service de la cour du prince-archevêque ? Cette sérénade est e e connue sous le titre de Posthorn Serenade K 320 et doit son nom au 2 trio du 2 menuet qui est écrit avec cor de postillon. On aurait tendance à suivre l’hypothèse d’Albert Einstein qui y voyait une sorte d’évocation de son envie de « prendre la poste » au plus vite et de quitter Salzbourg… La particularité de cette sérénade est que les mouvements concertants sont écrits non plus pour le violon, mais bien pour des instruments à vent, un octuor de deux flûtes, deux hautbois, deux cors et deux bassons, parmi lesquels le premier hautbois et la première flûte ont le rôle principal. Pense-t-il à ses amis de Mannheim, Wendling et Ramm, en écrivant ceci ?

N’est-ce pas également une autre façon pour lui d’indiquer son souhait de partir ? Et ceci expliquerait aussi sans doute son plaisir à faire jouer cette musique « de départ » dans son académie… Après l’Andantino que nous avons retenu, un Rondo concertant est écrit exactement pour la même formation. Fait-il partie lui aussi du concert du 23 mars 1783 ?

« 7. Mademoiselle Teyber a chanté la scène de mon dernier opéra de Milan, Parto, m’affretto. » Décidément, lors de ce concert, Mozart aime faire entendre des compositions du début de sa carrière.

Il s’agit d’un extrait de Lucio Silla, opéra créé à Milan le 25 décembre 1772, composition dont on ne cesse de redécouvrir le potentiel dramatique. Il confie le rôle de Giunia, créé par Anna de Amicis-Buonsolazzi, à Theresa Teyber. Est-ce une façon de la remercier pour l’invitation à sa propre académie une semaine plus tard ? « 8. J’ai joué seul une petite fugue (parce que l’Empereur était là) et varié un air d’un opéra nommé Les Philosophes. Je dus jouer encore et ai varié l’aria Unser dummer Pöbel meint extrait des Pélerins de la Mecque. » Au milieu de toutes ces musiques concertantes et orchestrales, le virtuose du clavier se réserve une place de choix, uniquement consacrée à l’improvisation. Il mentionne d’abord cette « petite fugue (parce que l’Empereur était là) ».

Une fugue ? Rien d’étonnant à cela. Dès son arrivée à Vienne, il fait connaissance avec le baron Gottfried van Swieten, mélomane averti et grand connaisseur des maîtres de la génération précédente, principalement Johann Sebastian Bach et Georg Friedrich Händel. Mozart se passionne très vite pour ces compositeurs, et principalement pour la perfection des fugues du Cantor de Leipzig, une passion qui trouvera son aboutissement notamment dans le final de la 41e symphonie. C’est durant le printemps 1782 qu’il se plonge dans ce répertoire, réalisant des transcriptions pour cordes de fugues de Bach, se lançant lui-même dans l’écriture de fugues, parfois seulement esquissées et souvent d’un style très proche de celui de son modèle. Un Prélude et Fugue en ut majeur est l’aboutissement de toutes ces expérimentations. Il

avait l’intention d’en écrire une série de six en vue d’une publication qu’il aurait dédiée à van Swieten.

Certes, il aurait pu jouer l’une de ces pièces. Mais connaissant l’humour qui était le sien, nous avons opté pour une fugue d’un type très particulier : il s’agit d’une petite Gigue qu’il aurait improvisée en mai 1789, lorsqu’il joua l’orgue de Bach à Leipzig.

Parce que l’Empereur était là ? Comme la plupart de ses prédécesseurs, Joseph II est mélomane et même musicien, son professeur n’étant autre que le maître de chapelle de la cour, Antonio Salieri.

Joseph II est passionné de musique et suit avec grande attention la carrière du jeune prodige ; preuve de sa conviction du talent de Mozart, il lui a commandé, dès son arrivée à Vienne, L’Enlèvement au Sérail. Quoi donc de plus normal pour Mozart de remercier l’Empereur de sa présence en lui dédiant une composition qui ne peut que s’adresser à des oreilles de connaisseur ?

C’est dans le genre des variations qu’un virtuose de cette époque peut trouver le meilleur moyen de séduire ; c’est dans ce domaine que le jeune Ludwig van Beethoven séduira encore le public viennois quelques années plus tard. Mozart nous a laissé plusieurs cycles de variations pour le clavier ; ils s’étalent sur toute sa carrière. Mais il est certain que ce qui a été conservé n’est qu’une petite part de tout ce qu’il a dû improviser au cours de ces concerts.

Il improvise donc d’abord sur le thème d’un opéra de Giovanni Paisiello, I Filosofi immaginari, l’air Salve tu Domine. Cet opéra, connu aussi sous le titre de Gli astrologi immaginari, a été créé à SaintPétersbourg en 1779, puis représenté dans une version française à Paris l’année suivante. Aurait-il été joué à Vienne au début des années 1780 ? Le fait que le manuscrit autographe y soit conservé à la Österreichische Nationalbibliothek en est-il un signe ? Il est difficile d’imaginer que Mozart improvise sur un thème inconnu de son public… En tout cas, Paisiello, auteur de près de cent opéras, est à Vienne

l’année suivante. Ces variations, Mozart en rédige une version définitive dans les mois qui suivent le 23 mars (K 398).

Les opéras de Gluck sont certainement plus connus à Vienne où le compositeur a séjourné durant une vingtaine d’années entre 1752 et 1774. Parmi les différents genres qu’il a pratiqués se trouvent des pastiches d’opéras comiques français, dont Les Pèlerins de la Mecque ou la Rencontre imprévue est l’un des plus célèbres ; il a été représenté au Burgtheater en janvier 1764. Ce genre d’ouvrages a dû contribuer à la réputation de Gluck à Paris, où il a ensuite fait carrière de 1774 à 1779. On sait qu’il est rentré à Vienne, ulcéré par les querelles parisiennes et les cabales dont il a été victime. Son retour à Vienne coïncide de peu avec l’arrivée de Mozart. Les deux hommes se sont rencontrés à plusieurs reprises et Gluck assiste au fameux concert. Quoi de plus normal, donc, que Mozart improvise ensuite sur un thème de cet autre monument de l’opéra de son temps ? Le titre de l’air est en allemand. Il est plus que probable qu’à Vienne, où l’Empereur soutient la création d’un style d’opéra en allemand, la version traduite pour des représentations à Frankfort en 1772 ait acquis les préférences des spectacles locaux. C’est seulement l’année suivante, en 1784, que Mozart rédige une version écrite de ces variations. « 9. La Lange a chanté mon nouveau Rondeau. » Cet air de concert a été écrit spécifiquement pour Aloysia Weber, épouse Lange, le 8 janvier 1783. Il a certainement été composé pour l’académie à laquelle elle a participé immédiatement après un retour de tournée le 11 janvier. Pour Wolfgang, c’est sans doute l’occasion de dédicacer à celle qu’il a tant aimée à Mannheim – l’a-t-il oubliée ? – une nouvelle partition parfaitement adaptée à son talent de dramaturge, mais aussi à celui de brillante cantatrice.

Le deuxième disque de ce coffret est complété par des enregistrements réalisés lors de la première cession du Millenium Orchestra, deux ouvertures d’opéras, celles de Don Giovanni et de La Flûte enchantée.

« 10. Le dernier mouvement de la symphonie du début. » Et avec cette fin de la symphonie, le rideau tombe sur ce concert-fleuve qui a permis à Mozart de se faire entendre aux titres de compositeur et de virtuose. Il est entouré des meilleurs interprètes, des meilleurs solistes. L’Empereur est là et, ce qui semble ne pas être la coutume, il assiste à tout le concert. Gluck est là, lui aussi. Certes, il manque ses amis de Mannheim, Ramm, Ritter, Wendling, mais, finalement, le rôle important des instruments à vent dans le programme est une façon de les faire participer. Salieri est-il caché dans l’ombre d’une loge, à admirer et à fulminer en silence, tel que nous le présente Miloš Forman dans son film Amadeus ?

April 1781. Eigentlich handelt es sich um ein Postskriptum; davor beschreibt er in allen Einzelheiten, was er in Wien tut, die Informationen, die er über das Musikleben der Stadt sammeln konnte, sogar seine „Rentabilität“. Er teilt ihm auch seine Schwierigkeiten mit dem Erzbischof Colloredo mit („unser lrzefaale“, wie er ihn nennt), der beschlossen hat, alles zu unternehmen, damit er seinen Dienst in Salzburg wieder aufnehme. Und er endet dieses Postskriptum mit: „ und ich bin gern hier, mithin mache ich es mir auch nach meinen kräften zu Nutzn. seÿen sie versichert, daß ich mein absehen nur habe, so viel möglich geld zu gewinen; den das ist nach der gesundheit das beste.“ Wolfgang ist erst vor kurzer Zeit in Wien angekommen. Seine Oper Idomeneo ist in München am 29. Januar in Gegenwart seines Vaters Leopold und seiner Schwester Nannerl erfolgreich uraufgeführt worden. Anfang März kehrten Vater und Schwester nach Salzburg zurück, während Wolfgang nach Wien reiste, wo er am 16. März um 9 Uhr ankam. Eigentlich reagierte er ganz einfach auf den Befehl des Erzbischofs von Salzburg, der sich in Wien aufhielt und gewünscht hatte, dass seine Musiker zu ihm stoßen. Bei seiner Ankunft wurde Mozart übrigens in einem „scharmanten Zimer in nemlichen hause wo der Erz=bischof logirt“ untergebracht. Um 4 Uhr musste er bereits an einem Konzert teilnehmen, das

sein Dienstherr für etwa zwanzig Personen „der grösten Noblesse“ geben ließ. Danach überschlugen sich die Ereignisse : trotz der Vorwürfe seines Vaters beschloss Wolfgang, den Dienst bei Colloredo zu quittieren und sich in Wien niederzulassen. Seinen Lebensunterhalt verdiente er sich mit Konzerten, Aufträgen und – zu einem nicht unwesentlichen Anteil – Klavierstunden, die er mehreren Schülern gab, u.zw. vor allem jungen Frauen der guten Wiener Gesellschaft. Eine feste Stellung als Musiker an einem Hof oder einer Kirche auszuschlagen, war ein recht neues Phänomen, vor allem für einen Musiker, dessen Ruf noch nicht so gefestigt war wie der einiger seiner Kollegen, z.B. Christoph Willibald Glucks, mit dem Mozart übrigens zu Beginn seines Aufenthalts in Wien sehr regelmäßigen Kontakt pflegte.

Doch wie soll man sich jene Konzerte vorstellen, die Mozart in seinen Briefen „accademien“ nennt? Im Jahre 1778 in Paris konnte er feststellen, wie bedeutend offiziell organisierte Konzerte waren, wie z.B. die des Concert spirituel, wo seine neue Pariser Symphonie uraufgeführt wurde. In Wien gab es nichts von all dem. Die dortigen „Accademien“ wurden auf verschiedene Weise organisiert. Es genügt, die Akademien, an denen er nach seiner Ankunft in Wien teilnahm, aufzuzählen: 3. April 1781 („accademie der Witwen im kärtner thor Theater“), 8.

April 1781 (Deutsches Haus), 23. November 1781 (bei den Auernhammers, wo er mit seiner Schülerin Josepha Barbara das Konzert für 2 Klaviere KV 365 und höchstwahrscheinlich die Sonate für zwei Klaviere KV 448 spielt), 3. März 1782 (Burgtheater), [?] Dezember 1782 (beim Gesandten Dimitri Michaïlovich Galitzin) usw.

Abgesehen von der Akademie bei den Auernhammers vor einem Publikum ausgewählter Gäste, ist Mozart jedes Mal ein Künstler unter anderen. Doch alle seine Auftritte und schließlich die Uraufführung der Entführung aus dem Serail am 16. Juli 1782 tragen dazu bei, seinen Ruf zu vergrößern. Er wechselt mehrmals seine Wohnung, um sich schließlich in einer luxuriöseren einzurichten, in der er nach seiner Hochzeit mit Constance Weber am 4.

August 1782 eine Familie gründen kann (obwohl Leopold gegen diese Heirat ist).

„I: die Neue Haffner Simphonie.“ Auffallend ist, dass Mozart in jedem seiner großen Konzerte (Akademien) eine Symphonie ins Programm aufnehmen musste. Diese Gattung kannte er gut – seine erste Symphonie schrieb er 1764 in London – und während der Jahre vor seiner Ankunft in Wien komponierte er mehr als dreißig. Doch scheint ihn diese Gattung nicht mehr zu begeistern. Die paar Symphonien der Wiener Periode sind vor

Er ist also endlich in der Lage, in Wien seine eigene Akademie zu organisieren, sein erstes großes Konzert, mit dem er sich dem Publikum der Hauptstadt in allen möglichen Bereichen vorstellen kann.

Es findet am 23. März 1783 im Burgtheater statt. Einige Tage davor, am 11. März, nahm er an einer Akademie teil, die vom Sopran Aloysia Lange organisiert worden war, und am 30. März folgt er in gleicher Art der Einladung des Soprans Theresa Teyber, zwei Solistinnen, bei denen er sich revanchiert, indem er sie für seine eigene Akademie engagiert. Am 29. März beschreibt Mozart in einem Brief an seinen Vater den Erfolg dieses Konzerts: „Ich glaube es wird nicht nöthig seÿn ihnen viel von dem erfolg meiner academie zu schreiben, sie werden es vieleicht schon gehört haben. genug; das theater hätte ohnmöglich völler seÿn könen, und alle logen waren besezt. – das liebste aber war mir, daß seine Maÿestätt der kaÿser auch zugegen war, und wie vergnügt er war, und was für lauten beÿfall er mir gegeben; – es ist schon beÿ ihm gewöhnlich daß er das geld bevor er ins theater kömt, zur Cassa schickt, sonst hätte ich mir mit allem recht mehr versprechen därfen, den seine zufriedenheit war ohne gränzen; – er hat 25 duccaten geschickt.“ Danach berichtet Mozart im Detail über das Programm dieses sehr langen Konzerts. Hier das gesamte Programm. Anlässlich dieser Aufnahme wurde unsere Interpretation auch als Konzert gegeben, allerdings in einer gekürzten Fassung.

allem „Pflichtübungen“, um in seine Konzerte diese Gattung einzufügen, auf die man offensichtlich aus Gewohnheit nicht verzichten konnte. Das ist der Fall bei der Symphonie in C-Dur KV 425, die binnen vier Tagen im November 1783 in Linz geschrieben wurde. Er spricht davon in einem Schreiben vom 31. Oktober: „und weil ich keine einzige Simphonie beÿ mir habe, so schreibe ich über hals und kopf an einer Neuen, welche bis dahin fertig seÿn muß.“ Muss er drei Jahre nach der Linzer Symphonie unter den gleichen Umständen eines Konzerts in Prag im Dezember 1786 eine neue Symphonie komponieren?

Sicher wurde er sich der Bedeutung dieser Gattung wieder bewusst, als er im Sommer 1788 in wenigen Wochen und ohne ein dafür bestimmtes Konzert Werke komponierte, die man als eine Apotheose der Gattung betrachten darf, nämlich die letzten drei Symphonien (Es-Dur, g-Moll und C-Dur „Jupiter“).

Doch kommen wir zum März 1783 zurück. Er braucht eine Symphonie. Im Jahre 1782 erhielt er nach dem Erfolg der Entführung aus dem Serail einen Auftrag von Siegmund Haffner, dem Bürgermeister von Salzburg, der seine Erhebung in den Adelsstand feiern wollte. 1776 hatte Mozart bereits eine Serenade für Haffner geschrieben (KV 250). Nicht besonders begeistert, akzeptierte Mozart diesen Auftrag, den er schließlich nicht vollendete: Nur die „Symphonie-Sätze“ wurden komponiert; kein 2.

Menuett, kein Marsch, keine konzertanten Sätze. Schließlich wurde diese Serenade nicht in Salzburg gespielt, und Mozart hatte so unbewusst seine fünfunddreißigste Symphonie geschrieben! Er fügte sie nun in seine Akademie ein. Aber wie? In seinem Brief vom 29. März erwähnte er diese Symphonie zweimal, einmal als erstes Stück u.zw. als „die Neue Hafner Simphonie“ und als 10. Nummer „das lezte Stück von der ersten Simphonie“. Bedeutet das, dass dieses Finale nur am Ende gespielt wurde oder war es als „Zugabe“ nochmals zu hören? Was unsere Rekonstruktion mit dem Programm betrifft, das wir in kürzerer Form wiedergeben als beim ursprünglichen Konzert, so entschlossen wir uns zu einem anderen

„2:t sang Mad:me Lange die aria auf 4 instrumenten aus meiner Münchner oper. se il padre perdei:“ Madame Lange ist Aloysia Weber, die Mozart in Mannheim 1778 kennenlernte und sich in sie verliebte. Sie war damals 16 Jahre alt, Wolfgang 22. Sie hatte eine wunderschöne Koloratursopranstimme, die den Komponisten zu einigen seiner eindrucksvollsten Konzertarien inspirierte, darunter zu der äußerst schwierigen Popoli di Tessaglia KV 316, die in einem hohen g gipfelt (d.h. einen Ton höher als der höchste Ton der berühmten Rolle der Königin der Nacht in der Zauberflöte). 1780 ließ sich die Familie Weber in Wien nieder; dort lernte Mozart zwei von Aloysias Schwestern kennen: Constanze (seine zukünftige Frau) und Maria Josepha (die Königin der Nacht der Uraufführung). Aloysia, die den Schauspieler und Maler Joseph Lange geheiratet hatte (von dem das berühmte „unvollendete Porträt“ von Mozart stammt), blieb eine der Lieblingsstimmen Mozarts.

Diese Arie aus dem Idomeneo hatte sicher in Mozarts Erinnerung ganz besondere Bedeutung.

Dass er eine Arie mit „4 instrumenten“ erwähnt, ist wichtig. Als er den Idomeneo für München schreibt, weiß er, dass das Orchester, das sein Werk interpretieren wird, kein anderes als das aus Mannheim ist. Der Kurfürst von der Pfalz Karl Theodor war nämlich Kurfürst von München geworden und sein Orchester war ihm gefolgt. Die wichtigsten Solisten des Orchesters waren sehr enge Freund Mozarts geworden. Er hatte sie in Mannheim 1778 kennengelernt und einige im selben Jahr bei seinem Aufenthalt in Paris wiedergetroffen (wo sie als Solisten beim Concert spirituel brillierten).

Vorschlag. Als Nr. I wird nur der erste Satz der Symphonie gespielt, was als Ouvertüre ausgezeichnet funktioniert (da der Satz in dieser Art wirkt!). Die drei anderen Sätze finden ihren Platz am Schluss des Konzertes etwa in Art eines Divertimentos (fast wie eine Ballettmusik).

Mozart weiß also, dass er mit bemerkenswerten Bläservirtuosen rechnen kann: dem Flötisten JeanBaptiste Wendling, dem Oboisten Friedrich Ramm, dem Fagottisten Georg Wenzel Ritter usw.

Selbstverständlich denkt er an sie, als er diese Arie der Ilia schreibt, die bei der Uraufführung von Dorothea Wendling, der Frau des befreundeten Flötisten gesungen wurde. Seit Idomeneo hat sich seine orchestrale Kompositionsweise verfeinert und die Rolle der Blasinstrumente, die mit der Stimme Zwiegespräch führen, erweitert. Soll man hinter der Wahl dieser Arie eine versteckte väterliche Liebeserklärung sehen? „3:t spielte ich das 3:te von meinen Souscriptions=Concerten.“ Ist die Symphonie nicht die Gattung, für die er sich in dieser Zeit am meisten begeistert, so gehört das Klavierkonzert einer privilegierten Kategorie an. Zugegebenermaßen kann er wie die Sänger in diesem Bereich brillieren und ergreifen, kurz sich ausdrücken. Unter den 27 Konzerten, die sein Katalog enthält, schrieb er 15 in Wien. Offensichtlich konzentrierte er sich nach der Uraufführung der Entführung aus dem Serail im Monat Juli eine Zeit lang auf diese Gattung, in der er sich auszeichnete und die er ein wenig beiseite gelassen hatte. Zwischen Oktober 1782 und Januar 1783 schrieb er drei neue Konzerte (A-Dur KV 414, F-Dur KV 413 und C-Dur KV 415). Zu Beginn des Jahres versuchte Mozart eine Subskription für den Verkauf einer Partitur dieser drei Konzerte zustande zu bringen.

Die Annonce erschien in der Wiener Zeitung vom 15. Januar. Allerdings war diese Subskription ein Misserfolg, und Leopold schien das dem zu hohen Preis zuzuschreiben, den Wolfgang verlangte. Der Verkauf seiner Kompositionen war also eine der neuen Einkunftsmöglichkeiten, an die er dachte.

Später sollte er dem Pariser Verleger Sieber ein Angebot machen, das ohne Folgen blieb.

Das Konzert in C-Dur wurde anscheinend zu einem seiner Lieblingskonzerte. Er spielte es übrigens am 30. März in der Akademie von Theresa Teyber. Unter den drei Konzerten dieser Trilogie ist es das einzige, das außer Oboen, Hörnern und Fagotten zwei Trompeten und Pauken erfordert. Wird es dadurch ein majestätischeres Konzert? Nicht unbedingt. Es genügt zu beachten, wie es beginnt und wie es endet. Steht dahinter der Einfluss seiner Arbeit über die Fugen Bachs, den er durch die Vermittlung des Barons Van Swieten gerade entdeckt hat? Der Baron regt ihn dazu an, vor das Forte der Einleitung ein paar Takte zu setzen, die nur von den Streichern in Form einer fugierten Behandlung eines von den ersten Violinen, den zweiten Violinen und schließlich den Bratschen und Bässen angestimmten Motives gespielt werden. Und was soll man zum originellen Ende des dritten Satzes sagen, der ebenfalls mit einer Pianissimonuance schließt, als würden sich der Solist und das Orchester auf Zehenspitzen fortschleichen? Die Überraschungen sind in diesem Konzert zahlreich. Hier eine ziemlich unerwartete, die (gemeinsam mit diesem Schluss „auf Zehenspitzen“) den im allgemeinen impulsiven, lebhaften Charakter der abschließenden Rondos der Konzerte widerspricht: zwei „Adagio“-Strophen in Moll. Im allgemeinen kann ein Rondo eine solche Strophe enthalten, doch taucht sie nach mehreren Refrains in der Dynamik des Refrains auf. Hier aber erscheint sie als erste Strophe. Eine verzierte Fassung dieses Adagios taucht dort, wo die Streicher pizzicato spielen wieder auf, kurz vor der letzten Rückkehr des Refrains, sie nimmt also die Stelle der letzten Strophe ein, der im allgemeinen ein rascher Charakter vorbehalten ist.

Sind diese geheimnisvolle Einleitung, die Zärtlichkeit des langsamen Satzes und die beiden AdagioPassagen des Schlussrondos nicht Elemente, aus denen man schließen kann, dass sich Mozarts Gedanken in Erinnerungen verlieren?

„4: sang Adamberger die scene für die Baumgarten“.

Johann Valentin Adamberger ist ein Tenor, den Mozart besonders schätzte. Er sang u.a. die Rolle des Belmonte bei der Uraufführung der Entführung aus dem Serail. Die Paumgarten, wie Mozart sie ziemlich grob nennt, ist niemand anderer als die Maitresse des Kurfürsten Karl Theodor von Bayern. Es ist anzunehmen, dass sie eine hübsche Stimmtechnik hatte, da ihr Mozart die Konzertarie Misera dove son! – Ah! non son’io che parlo KV 369 gewidmet hatte. Selbstverständlich ist die Arie nicht zu schwierig und vermeidet zu rasche Läufe oder zu hohe Noten, an die er bei anderen Solistinnen wie Aloysia oder Theresa denken konnte!

5:t die kleine Concer=tant=Simphonie von meiner lezten final Musique.

Hierbei handelt es sich wieder um eine Erinnerung an die Salzburger Zeit, eine Serenade die auf 1779 datiert ist. Es ist die letzte dieser Gattung, die er in der erzbischöflichen Stadt schrieb, ohne dass man den Empfänger oder Auftragsgeber kennt. Sollte es nur ein Divertimento für den Hof des Fürsterzbistums sein?

Diese Sonate ist unter dem Titel Posthorn-Serenade KV 320 bekannt und verdankt ihren Namen dem 2.

Trio des 2 Menuetts, das das Horn eines Postillions einsetzt. Man ist geneigt, Albert Einsteins Hypothese zu folgen, die darin eine Anspielung auf seine Lust sah, so schnell wie möglich „die Post zunehmen“ und Salzburg zu verlassen ... Die Besonderheit dieser Serenade liegt darin, dass die konzertanten Sätze nicht mehr für die Violine geschrieben sind, sondern für Blasinstrumente, ein Oktett für 2 Flöten, 2 Oboen, 2 Hörner und 2 Fagotte, unter denen die erste Oboe und die erste Flöte die Hauptrollen spielen. Dachte Mozart an seine Mannheimer Freunde Wendling und Ramm, als er das schriebe? Ist nicht auch das eine andere Art, seinen Wunsch fortzugehen anzudeuten? Würde das nicht sicher auch sein Vergnügen erklären, diese „Abschieds-Musik“ in seiner Akademie spielen zu lassen? Auf das Andantino, das wir ausgesucht haben, folgt

„6:t spielte ich das hier beliebte Concert ex D. wozu ich das variazion Rondeau geschickt habe.“ Ein zweites Konzert, u.zw. wieder eine Komposition aus der Salzburger Zeit, aber nicht irgendeine, sondern sein erstes richtiges Klavierkonzert, das 5. (er spielte es wahrscheinlich auf dem Cembalo). Alle früheren Konzerte waren Bearbeitungen von Sätzen aus Klaviersonaten, zuerst von Johann Christian Bach, dann von französischen Komponisten. Mozart schreibt „das hier beliebte Concert“, weil er es bereits in Wien in der Akademie vom 3. März 1782 und dann in der vom 11. März 1783 gespielt hat. Zu dieser Gelegenheit ersetzt er das abschließende Allegro mit einem brillanteren Rondo, das in Form eines unwiderstehlichen Themas mit Variationen weiter ausgearbeitet ist. Hier ist man weit von dem düstereren Finale des anderen Konzerts entfernt, und der brillante Schluss kann nur starken Applaus auslösen! „7:t sang Mad:elle täuber die scene aus meiner lezten Mailand opera. Parto, m‘affretto“.

Offensichtlich wollte Mozart in diesem Konzert Kompositionen aus dem Beginn seiner Karriere aufs Programm setzen. Hier handelt es sich um einen Auszug aus Lucio Silla, einer Oper, die in Mailand am 25. Dezember 1772 uraufgeführt wurde und deren dramatisches Potential man immer deutlicher erkennt.

Mozart vertraut die Rolle der Giunia, die ursprünglich von Anna de Amicis-Buonsolazzi gesungen wurde, Theresa Teyber an. Will er ihr damit danken, dass sie ihn eine Woche später zu ihrer eigenen Akademie eingeladen hat?

ein konzertantes Rondo, das für genau die gleiche Besetzung geschrieben ist. Wurde es auch beim Konzert am 23. März 1783 gespielt?

Eine kleine fuge. |: weil der kaÿser da war :| und varierte eine aria aus einer opera genant. die Philosophen. – musste nochmal spielen. varierte die aria unser dumer Pöbel meint p: aus den Pilgrime von Mecka.“ In der Mitte all dieser konzertanten und orchestralen Musik hält sich der Klaviervirtuose einen Platz frei, der nur der Improvisation gewidmet ist. Er erwähnt zunächst eine „kleine Fuge (weil der Kaiser da war)“.

Eine Fuge? Das ist nicht verwunderlich. Kaum in Wien angekommen, lernt er den Baron Gottfried Van Swieten kennen, einen sachkundigen Melomanen und großen Kenner der Meister der vorangegangenen Generation, vor allem Johann Sebastian Bachs und Georg Friedrich Händels. Mozart begeistert sich sehr schnell für diese Komponisten, besonders für die Perfektion der Fugen des Kantors von Leipzig, und diese Leidenschaft findet vor allem im Finale der 41. Symphonie ihren Niederschlag. Im Frühjahr 1782 beschäftigt er sich mit diesem Repertoire, transkribiert Fugen Bachs für Streicher und macht sich selbst ans Komponieren von Fugen, die manchmal nur skizziert sind und deren Stil oft dem seines Vorbilds sehr nahe ist. Ein Präludium und Fuge in C-Dur ist das Ergebnis all dieser Experimente. Mozart hatte die Absicht, eine Reihe von sechs solcher Werke für eine Veröffentlichung zu schreiben, die er Van Swieten widmen wollte. Sicher hätte er eines dieser Stücke spielen können. Doch da wir seinen Sinn für Humor kennen, wählten wir eine Fuge von ganz besonderer Art: Es handelt sich um eine kleine Gigue, die er im Mai 1789 improvisiert haben soll, als er auf Bachs Orgel in Leipzig spielte.

Weil der Kaiser da war? Wie die meisten seiner Vorgänger war Joseph II. Musikliebhaber und sogar selbst Musiker. Sein Lehrer war niemand anderer als der Hofkapellmeister Antonio Salieri.

Joseph II. liebte die Musik leidenschaftlich und verfolgte die Karriere des jungen Genies mit großer

Aufmerksamkeit. Ein Beweis für seinen Glauben an Mozarts Talent war es, dass er ihn gleich nach seiner Ankunft in Wien mit der Entführung aus dem Serail beauftragte. Es ist also ganz normal, dass Mozart dem Kaiser für seine Anwesenheit dankte, indem er ihm eine Komposition widmete, die sich nur an Kennerohren richten konnte!

Ein Virtuose dieser Zeit konnte in der Gattung der Variationen am besten brillieren. Auf diesem Gebiet sollte einige Jahre später auch noch der junge Beethoven das Wiener Publikum begeistern. Mozart hat uns mehrere Zyklen von Variationen für Klavier hinterlassen, die sich über seine ganze Karriere verteilen. Doch sicher ist das, was uns erhalten ist, nur ein kleiner Teil aller Improvisationen, die er im Laufe dieser Konzerte spielte.

Er improvisiert also zuerst über ein Thema einer Oper von Giovanni Paisiello, I Filosofi immaginarii, u.zw. die Arie Salve tu Domine. Diese Oper ist auch unter dem Titel Gli astrologi immaginarii bekannt und war 1779 in Sankt-Petersburg uraufgeführt und im darauffolgenden Jahr in einer französischen Fassung in Paris gespielt worden. Sollte sie zu Beginn der 1780er Jahre auch nach Wien gekommen sein? Deutet die Tatsache, dass die eigenhändige Handschrift in der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek aufbewahrt wird, darauf hin? Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass Mozart über ein Thema improvisierte, dass seinem Publikum unbekannt war ... Jedenfalls war Paisiello, der an die hundert Opern geschrieben hatte, im folgenden Jahr in Wien. Von diesen Variationen schieb Mozart in den Monaten nach dem 23. März eine endgültige Fassung (KV 398).

Die Opern von Gluck waren in Wien sicher besser bekannt, denn dort hatte sich der Komponist etwa zwanzig Jahre zwischen 1752 und 1774 aufgehalten. Unter den verschiedenen Gattungen, mit denen er sich auseinandersetzte, befanden sich Pasticcios französischer komischer Opern. Eine der

berühmtesten davon war Les pélerins de la Mecque ou la Rencontre imprévue. Sie war im Januar 1764 im Burgtheater aufgeführt worden. Diese Art von Werken hatte sicher zum Ruf Glucks in Paris beigetragen, wo er danach von 1774 bis 1779 Karriere machte. Bekanntlich kam er verbittert von den Pariser Streitigkeiten und den Intrigen, deren Opfer er war, nach Wien zurück. Seine Rückkehr dorthin fiel fast mit Mozarts Ankunft zusammen. Die beiden Komponisten sind sich mehrere Male begegnet, und Gluck wohnte besagtem Konzert bei. Also ist es ganz normal, dass Mozart nun über ein Thema dieses anderen Opernmonuments seiner Zeit improvisierte! Die Arie trägt einen deutschen Titel. Es ist mehr als wahrscheinlich, dass die für die Aufführungen in Frankfurt 1772 übersetzte Fassung in Wien bevorzugt wurde, wo der Kaiser die Entwicklung eines Opernstils in deutscher Sprache unterstützte. Erst im folgenden Jahr (1784) schrieb Mozart eine Fassung dieser Variationen nieder. t

„9: sang die lange das Neue Rondeau von mir.“ Diese Arie wurde extra für Aloysia Lange, geborene Weber, am 8. Januar 1783 komponiert. Sicher wurde sie für die Akademie geschrieben, an der sie gleich nach ihrer Rückkehr von einer Tournee am 11. Januar teilgenommen hatte. Für Wolfgang ist das bestimmt eine Gelegenheit der Frau, die er so sehr in Mannheim geliebt hatte – hat er sie vergessen? – ein neues Werk zu schreiben, das ihr als brillanter Sängerin mit ihrem dramatischen Talent auf den Leib geschrieben war. „10. das lezte Stück von der ersten Simphonie.“ Und mit diesem Ende der Symphonie fällt der Vorhang nach einem langen Konzert, das Mozart erlaubte, sich als Komponist und Virtuose zu zeigen. Hier ist er von den besten Interpreten, den besten

Solisten umgeben. Der Kaiser ist da und wohnt, was anscheinend nicht bei ihm üblich war, dem ganzen Konzert bei. Gluck ist auch anwesend. Zwar fehlen seine Mannheimer Freunde Ramm, Ritter und Wendling, doch ist die bedeutende Rolle der Blasinstrumente eine Art, sie in dieses Programm mit einzubeziehen. Sollte sich Salieri im Schatten einer Loge verstecken, ihn still bewundern und außer sich vor Wut sein, so wie ihn Miloš Forman in seinem Film Amadeus zeigt?
