“DEVIENNE (François), born in Joinville (Haute-Marne) in 1759 and raised by his brother, a musician, who was in the service of the Prince of Deux-Ponts. He revealed his musical talent at an early age: at the age of ten he composed setting of the Mass with an accompaniment of wind instruments; this was performed by the musicians of the regiment where he had already been engaged as flautist. Once his studies were completed, he first entered the service of the Cardinal of Rohan and then moved on to the official band of the Swiss Guards, which he left in 1788 to join the theatre orchestra of Monsieur (the younger brother of Louis XIV) as bassoonist. As talented a bassoonist as he was a flautist, Devienne was also familiar with the other orchestral instruments and knew how to draw effects from them that were unknown in France before him.

Born with a talent for composition, he not only created a new genre of music for wind instruments but also encouraged artists to perfect their techniques, thereby contributing to the improvement of French orchestras in general. He was no less commendable as a dramatic composer and left a number of operas that were exceptional for the freshness of their ideas and the elegance of their instrumentation; they could still be heard with pleasure today. One such work, Les Visitandines, was performed with success over a long period. It would be difficult to understand his extremely large output if we did not know that he usually composed for eight hours a day, not including all of the duties that his position involved and the lessons that he also gave. This overload of work eventually caused a mental breakdown; he lost his sanity and had to be locked up in Charenton, where he died on September 5, 1803. He had been a professor at the Conservatoire de Musique and had also been included in the general reforms of 1802.”

This was François-Joseph Fétis’ entry on François Devienne in his Biographie universelle des musiciens (1834-1835). How had Devienne’s reputation as a composer changed by that time? Fétis suggested that some of his operas could still be performed, and also supplied a detailed list of his compositions, both operatic and instrumental.

He ends the list by mentioning a Méthode de flûte théorique et pratique, contenant tous les principes, des petits duos et sonates faciles (Paris, 1795) and noted that this esteemed work had been republished several times. One of those editions had been given to Hector Berlioz, who recalled his childhood memories and his discovery of music in his Mémoires, stating that his first teacher was his father, himself a doctor: “.he explained to me the first principles of the art, giving me a clear idea of the signs and terms used in music as well as their meaning and function. He gave me a flute together with Devienne’s Méthode shortly afterwards and took the trouble to show me how its mechanism worked, as he had done with the flageolet previously. I worked so hard that I had acquired a more than adequate skill on the flute after seven or eight months.”

Fétis’ list of the various positions filled by Devienne gives a clear indication of the singularly important role that Devienne played in French musical life at the end of the 18th century. First of all, he was a virtuoso who had evidently mastered the bassoon as well as the transverse flute, and with the same talent. His name is often found in the archives of the Concert spirituel, as a soloist in his concertos for flute or bassoon and together with other soloists for his symphonies concertantes, appearing there thirty-seven times between 1782 and 1790. He performed there for the last time in the organisation’s penultimate concert on 11 April 1790, performing one of his symphonies concertantes in the company of Sallentin (oboe), Jean Lebrun (horn) and Étienne Ozi (bassoon).

Ozi was clearly Devienne’s most important bassoonist rival, although we must assume that the two men were friends, given that it was Ozi who performed the first work by Devienne to be heard at the Concert Spirituel, a bassoon concerto, on 24 March 1780.

Devienne was also an important teacher as well as a performer. He was one of the founding professors of the first institution in Paris to teach music, the École de musique municipale, the initial aim of which was to train the necessary instrumentalists for the Musique de la Garde nationale, and which became the Conservatoire de Paris in 1795. He published his Méthode de flûte in 1793, which immediately became and long remained a reference work. As Fétis remarked, it was published in several editions during which it was revised and corrected: in the first edition Devienne clearly indicated his refusal to use the new keys that made the intonation of certain notes easier or that extended the lower range of the instrument; editions that appeared after his death, whilst still using Devienne’s name and benefiting from his reputation, altered these sections to provide information on these keys, as their use had become widespread. We should note that Devienne’s pedagogical activities did not include the bassoon: Etienne Ozi, whose Parisian career was similar to Devienne’s, published the first Méthode for the instrument in 1787, following this with other pedagogical works for bassoon.

Devienne’s oeuvre primarily consists of works for flute and bassoon. He provided these instruments with an extensive repertoire in various genres: sonatas with piano accompaniment, duets (two flutes or two bassoons), trios and quartets in which each instrument is accompanied by strings (flute or bassoon with violin or viola and cello; flute or bassoon with violin, viola and cello).

The considerable rise in popularity of wind instruments in Paris at the end of the th 18 century and which increased even more during the Revolution spurred him to compose a few works in which clarinets and horns appear. He also composed several symphonies concertantes for wind instruments, a genre that was much appreciated by Parisian concert-goers, as well as a dozen concertos for flute, four concertos for bassoon and two concertos for horn. Truly a musician in the service of the Republic, he also composed patriotic songs and works for wind orchestra.

We should note that Devienne did not limit himself to the composition of instrumental works: he also wrote twelve opéras comiques, all of which date from the Revolutionary period, from Le Mariage clandestin (1790) to Le Valet de deux maîtres (1799) and Les Visitandines (1792); this last work was also mentioned by Fétis and seems to have enjoyed the greatest success of all.

The trios on this recording come from the two volumes published for the above ensembles, 6 Trios pour flûte, violon et violoncelle (1783), 6 Trios pour basson, violon et violoncelle (ca 1782), and therefore were composed during the ancien régime. The trios he composed during the Revolutionary period were intended primarily for wind instruments, for two clarinets and bassoon or for flute, clarinet and bassoon). The string trios from 1782 / 1783 were therefore the work of a composer in his twenties. The Classical style and the influence of the Mannheim School and of Haydn were strong at that time and, whilst symphonic music was highly successful, chamber music also enjoyed considerable popularity. String quartets were published in great abundance by such composers as Gossec, Vachon, Cambini and Jadin, although Devienne’s compositions for woodwind together with strings, whilst composed for the same Parisian context, seem to be completely original. Did he take other compositions as a model? It would not be surprising if he had been able to consult scores by certain German composers, if only through the many soloists of the Mannheim orchestra who had performed regularly at the Concert Spirituel, such as the flautist Johann Baptist Wendling (1723-1797), an author of many trios and quartets with flute, and the bassoonist Georg Wenzel Ritter (1748-1818), whose collection of quartets with bassoon had just been published in Paris in 1779. There is no doubt that these were Devienne’s stylistic models, given that the form and elegance of his works greatly resembled the music that could be heard in Mannheim at that time, music that also played an important role in the development of the talent of a certain Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The flute trios are in three movements, whilst the bassoon trios have two. The first movements are generally in what we know as sonata form, whilst the majority of the concluding movements are in variation or rondo form. These forms certainly allow the flute and the bassoon to take advantage of brilliant variations or sections, although it is also clear that Devienne took great pains not to let the solo instruments shine to the detriment of the accompanying strings: these works underline the wonderful balance that he imagined between the three instruments, each of whom is given his own variations.

Far from being a writer of simple concert works for flute or bassoon, Devienne is here revealed as a marvellous composer of chamber works. It is clear from these works that he was a talented composer for both violin and cello, as can also be seen in his sonatas for violin and continuo and his few string quartets.

François Devienne now stands revealed as a major composer of the French Classical period, although one whose rediscovery is still far from complete.

The trios recorded here were composed by François Devienne during a time when musical instruments and wind instruments in particular were being revised and transformed. The appearance of keys on the instruments launched a period of gradual change with respect to the instruments’ tuning and possibilities for phrasing. François Devienne described these changes in detail in his Méthode de flûte théorique et pratique before concluding: “It does not, however, follow that I wish to denigrate the small keys that careful research has caused to be added to the ordinary flute, with the purpose of correcting the muffled sounds in the instrument’s low register such as the G sharp or A flat, the B flat or A sharp: they are particularly necessary in slow movements and especially when the notes I have mentioned above are sustained. Although I personally do not use them, I do approve of them, but only in the above cases.”

Bearing this passage in mind, the Petit Trianon has chosen to use a selection of instruments whose manufacture is more Baroque than Classical.

Olivier Riehl plays an African blackwood copy of a Grenser flute made by Eugène Krijnen; Xavier Marquis plays a copy of a Prudent bassoon made by Laurent Verjat in 2016; Amandine Solano plays an Aegidius Klotz violin made in Mittenwald in Germany in 1777 and Cyril Poulet plays an Eastern European cello, maker unknown, from the end of the 18th century.

« DEVIENNE (François), né à Joinville (Haute-Marne) en 1759, fut élevé par son frère musicien au service du prince de Deux-Ponts. Dès son enfance il annonça les plus heureuses dispositions pour la musique ; à peine âgé de dix ans il composa une messe avec accompagnement d’instruments à vent, qui fut exécutée par les musiciens du régiment où il était déjà engagé comme flûte. Ses études musicales terminées, il s'attacha au cardinal de Rohan, et passa ensuite dans la musique des Gardes-Suisses, qu'il quitta pour entrer, en 1788, dans l’orchestre du théâtre de Monsieur, en qualité de bassoniste. Également distingué par son talent sur la flûte et sur le basson, Devienne avait une connaissance générale de tous les autres instruments, et savait en tirer des effets inconnus en France avant lui. Les productions de Devienne sont en si grand nombre qu'on ne comprendrait qu'à peine sa fécondité, si l’on ne savait que, nonobstant tous les devoirs que lui imposaient ses places et les leçons qu'il donnait, il travaillait ordinairement huit heures chaque jour. Cet excès de travail finit par altérer ses facultés ; sa tête se dérangea, et l’on fut obligé de l’enfermer à Charenton, où il mourut le 5 septembre 1803. II avait été professeur au Conservatoire de musique, et fut compris dans la réforme générale de 1802. »

C’est ainsi que François-Joseph Fétis présente François Devienne dans sa Biographie universelle des musiciens (1834-1835). À cette époque, que reste-t-il de la réputation de ce compositeur ? Fétis laisse supposer que certains de ses opéras pourraient encore être joués et donne en complément de cette notice une liste très complète de ses compositions, tant dans le domaine de l’opéra que dans celui de la musique instrumentale. Il termine cette liste par la mention d’une Méthode de flûte théorique et pratique, contenant tous les principes, des petits duos et sonates faciles (Paris, 1795), en stipulant : « Cet ouvrage estimé a été reproduit dans plusieurs éditions. » C’est l’une de ces éditions qui se retrouve entre les mains d’Hector Berlioz qui, dans ses Mémoires, évoque ses souvenirs d’enfance et sa découverte de la musique, guidé en premier lieu par son père, médecin de son état : « [I]l m’expliqua les premiers principes de cet art, en me donnant une idée nette de la raison de signes musicaux et de l’office qu’ils remplissaient. Bientôt après, il me mit entre les mains une flûte avec la méthode de Devienne, et prit, comme pour le, flageolet, la peine de m’en montrer le mécanisme. Je travaillais avec tant d’ardeur, qu’au bout de sept à huit mois j’avais acquis sur la flûte un talent plus que passable. » Les diverses activités de François Devienne qu’évoque l’article de Fétis en font incontestablement un acteur de toute première importance dans la vie musicale française de cette fin de XVIIIe siècle. Il y a d’abord le virtuose qui, visiblement, maîtrise avec autant de talent la flûte traversière que le basson. On le trouve très régulièrement mentionné au Concert spirituel, comme interprète de ses concertos pour flûte ou pour basson, voire, en compagnie d’autres solistes, dans ses symphonies concertantes. Il y apparaît 37 fois entre 1782 et 1790. C’est avec l’une de ses symphonies concertantes qu’il s’y fait entendre le 11 avril 1790, lors de l’avant-dernier concert de l’institution : il y joue en compagnie de Sallentin (hautbois), Jean Lebrun (cor) et Étienne Ozi (basson), ce dernier étant sans aucun doute le plus important concurrent de Devienne en tant que virtuose du basson.

Mais il faut supposer que les deux hommes s’apprécient, car c’est Ozi qui, le 24 mars

En complément de son activité de concertiste, Devienne est également un important pédagogue. Ainsi, il fait partie des professeurs fondateurs de la première institution d’enseignement musical parisienne, à savoir l’École de musique municipale, dont le but est, au départ, de former les instrumentistes nécessaires aux festivités de la République et qui deviendra, en 1795, le Conservatoire de Paris. C’est dans ce cadre qu’il publie, la même année, sa Méthode de flûte qui restera longtemps un ouvrage de référence. Comme le signale Fétis, cette méthode connaît plusieurs éditions au cours desquelles elle est corrigée et adaptée ; ainsi, dans la première édition, Devienne signale très clairement son refus d’utiliser les nouvelles clefs qui facilitent certaines altérations ou celles qui permettent d’étendre la tessiture de la flûte vers le grave. Mais certaines éditions posthumes seront modifiées, la présence de clefs s’étant généralisée. Notons que Devienne n’a pas la même activité en ce qui concerne le basson. C’est Étienne Ozi qui, suivant une carrière tout à fait comparable à Paris, est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages pédagogiques pour l’instrument, dont une première Méthode publiée en 1787.

L’œuvre de Devienne comporte en grande majorité des œuvres pour ses deux instruments, la flûte traversière et le basson. Dans ce domaine, il dote ses instruments d’un répertoire assez important selon diverses formules : des sonates avec accompagnement de piano, des duos (deux flûtes ou deux bassons), des trios et des quatuors dans lesquels chaque instrument est entouré de cordes (flûte ou basson avec violon ou alto et violoncelle / flûte ou basson avec violon, alto et violoncelle).

Le succès considérable des instruments à vent que l’on constate à Paris en cette fin de XVIIIe siècle et qui s’accroît encore dès la période révolutionnaire l’incite aussi à intégrer des clarinettes et des cors dans ses compositions. Il est également l’auteur de quelques symphonies concertantes pour instruments à vent, genre très prisé des concerts parisiens.

On peut encore dénombrer une douzaine de concertos pour flûte, quatre concertos pour basson et deux concertos pour cor. Musicien au service de la République, il compose également des chants patriotiques et des œuvres pour orchestre d’instruments à vent.

Mais, à côté de toute cette production de musique instrumentale, il faut également signaler que Devienne est l’auteur d’une douzaine d’opéras comiques qui datent tous de la période révolutionnaire, du Mariage clandestin (1790) au Valet de deux maîtres (1799) en passant par Les Visitandines (1792), ouvrage évoqué par Fétis et qui, semble-t-il, rencontre un succès particulièrement important.

Les trios réunis pour cet enregistrement proviennent des deux recueils édités pour ces formations : 6 Trios pour basson, violon et violoncelle (ca 1782) et 6 Trios pour flûte, violon et violoncelle (1783). Il s’agit donc d’œuvres encore écrites sous l’Ancien Régime. On peut par ailleurs constater que les compositions pour trio de la période révolutionnaire sont destinées avant tout aux instruments à vent (deux clarinettes et basson / flûte, clarinette et basson). Les trios avec cordes de 1782 ou 1783 enregistrés ici sont les compositions d’un musicien âgé d’une vingtaine d’années. À cette époque où le langage classique se développe sous l’influence de l’école de Mannheim et celle de Haydn, la musique de chambre bénéficie d’un engouement considérable. Ainsi, de très nombreux quatuors à cordes sont publiés par des compositeurs comme Gossec, Vachon, Cambini, Jadin et tant d’autres. Dans le contexte parisien, les compositions de Devienne, qui associent les bois et les cordes, semblent totalement originales. Qui sont ses modèles ? Peut-être a-t-il sous la main des partitions de certains compositeurs allemands, ce ne serait-ce que via les nombreux solistes de l’orchestre de Mannheim qui se produisent très régulièrement au Concert spirituel. Parmi eux se trouvent le flûtiste Johann Baptist Wendling (1723-1797), auteur de nombreux trios et quatuors avec flûte, et le bassoniste Georg Wenzel Ritter (1748-1818), dont un recueil de quatuors avec basson vient d’être édité à Paris en 1779.

de la musique que l’on peut entendre à Mannheim, une musique qui joue également un rôle de premier plan dans l’éclosion du talent d’un certain Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart…

Les trios avec flûte comportent trois mouvements, ceux pour basson deux mouvements. Si la forme « sonate » domine dans les mouvements initiaux, les mouvements conclusifs appartiennent majoritairement au genre de la variation ou du rondo. Cela permet à la flûte ou au basson de bénéficier de variations ou de couplets brillants, et cela nous permet de constater à quel point Devienne n’écrit pas ces trios pour mettre en valeur ses instruments au détriment des cordes, qui apparaîtraient dès lors comme de simples accompagnateurs, mais imagine un très bel équilibre entre les trois instruments qui bénéficient chacun de leurs propres variations. Cet équilibre est d’ailleurs présent tout au long de ces trios. Bien loin d’écrire des œuvres concertantes pour flûte ou pour basson, Devienne se présente ici comme un merveilleux compositeur de musique de chambre. Il y démontre sa maîtrise de l’écriture pour le violon et le violoncelle, qui transparaît également dans ses sonates pour violon et basse continue et dans ses quelques quatuors à cordes.

Ainsi, François Devienne nous apparaît tout simplement comme un compositeur majeur du classicisme français, dont la redécouverte reste bien incomplète.

Les trios présentés ici ont été écrits par François Devienne lors d’une période de renouvellement et de métamorphose de la facture instrumentale, et notamment des instruments à vent. L’apparition des clefs va permettre à l’intonation et aux possibilités de phrasé de changer progressivement. François Devienne, dans sa Méthode de flûte théorique et pratique évoque ces modifications en détail avant de conclure : « Il ne s’ensuit cependant pas de là que je veuille blâmer les petites clefs que des recherches justes ont fait ajouter à la flûte ordinaire pour remédier aux sons bouchés qui se trouvent dans le bas tels que le sol dièze et le la bémol et le si bémol ou le la dièze, elles sont d’une grande nécessité dans les morceaux lents et surtout quand les notes ci-dessus désignées, sont soutenues. Quoique je ne m’en serve point, je les approuve, mais dans ces cas-là seulement. » C’est inspiré par ce texte que le Petit Trianon a choisi de recourir à un instrumentarium à la facture plus baroque que classique.

Amandine Solano joue sur un violon d’Aegidius Klotz construit à Mittenwald en Allemagne en 1777 et Cyril Poulet joue sur un violoncelle anonyme est-européen de la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

„DEVIENNE (François), 1759 geboren in Joinville (Haute-Marne), wurde von seinem Bruder erzogen, der als Musiker im Dienst des Fürsten von Deux-Ponts stand.

Schon als Kind zeigte er eine besonders große Begabung für die Musik. Kaum zehn Jahre alt, komponierte er eine Messe mit Bläserbegleitung, die von den Musikern des Regiments aufgeführt wurde, bei dem er bereits als Flötenspieler engagiert war. Nach Abschluss seines Musikstudiums trat er in den Dienst des Kardinals von Rohan, wurde dann Musiker der Schweizer Garde, die er 1788 wieder verließ, um danach als Fagottist ins Orchester des Theaters von Monsieur einzutreten. Devienne zeichnete sich gleichermaßen durch sein Talent auf der Flöte wie auf dem Fagott aus und besaß darüber hinaus eine allgemeine Kenntnis aller Instrumente. Außerdem verstand er es, darauf Effekte zu erzielen, die vor ihm in Frankreich unbekannt waren. Mit seiner angeborenen Begabung zum Komponieren schuf er eine neue Musikgattung für die Blasinstrumente, ermutigte die Künstler, ihren Vortrag zu perfektionieren, und trug dadurch zur Verbesserung der französischen Orchester bei. Nicht weniger empfehlenswert als dramatischer Komponist, hinterließ er einige Opern, die man sich mit Vergnügen anhören könnte und die durch die Frische ihrer Ideen und die Eleganz der Instrumentation auffallen. Eines dieser Werke, das unter dem Titel Les Visitandines bekannt ist, wurde lange Zeit mit Erfolg aufgeführt. Die Produktionen von Devienne sind so zahlreich, dass man seine Schöpferkraft kaum verstünde, wüsste man nicht, dass er trotz aller Pflichten, die ihm seine Stellungen und die gegebenen Unterrichtsstunden auferlegten, für gewöhnlich jeden Tag acht Stunden arbeitete. Dieses Übermaß an Arbeit beeinträchtigte schließlich seine Fähigkeiten; sein Geist verwirrte sich, und man musste ihn in Charenton einsperren, wo er am 5. September 1803 verstarb. Er war Professor am Musikkonservatorium und an der allgemeinen Reform von 1802 beteiligt.“

So beschrieb François-Joseph Fétis in seiner Biographie universelle des musiciens (18341835) François Devienne. Was war damals vom Ruf dieses Komponisten noch übrig?

Fétis lässt vermuten, dass einige seiner Opern möglicherweise noch gespielt wurden, und stellt zusätzlich zu dieser Notiz eine beinahe vollständige Liste seiner Kompositionen sowohl auf dem Gebiet der Oper als auch auf dem der Instrumentalmusik auf. Er beendet diese Aufstellung mit der Erwähnung einer Méthode de flûte théorique et pratique, contenant tous les principes, des petits duos et sonate faciles (Theoretische und praktische Flötenschule, die alle Prinzipien sowie kleine Duos und leichte Sonaten enthält) (Paris, 1795) und schreibt ausdrücklich: „Dieses geschätzte Werk wurde in mehreren Ausgaben veröffentlicht“. Eine dieser Ausgaben besaß Hector Berlioz, der in seinen Mémoires seine Kindheitserinnerungen und seine Entdeckung der Musik schildert, an die ihn zunächst sein Vater, ein Arzt, heranführte: „er erklärte mir die ersten Prinzipien dieser Kunst, indem er mir eine klare Vorstellung vom Grund der musikalischen Zeichen und der Aufgabe gab, die sie erfüllen. Bald danach gab er mir eine Flöte mit dem Lehrwerk von Devienne und gab sich wie beim Flageolett die Mühe, mir ihren Mechanismus zu zeigen.

Ich übte mit solchem Eifer, dass ich nach sieben bis acht Monaten auf der Flöte ein mehr als passables Niveau erreicht hatte.“ François Deviennes verschiedene Aktivitäten, die der Artikel von Fétis erwähnt, zeigen, dass er unbestreitbar im französischen Musikleben des ausgehenden 18.

Jahrhundert eine Rolle von größter Bedeutung spielte. Zunächst war er ein Virtuose, der offensichtlich mit ebenso großem Talent die Querflöte wie das Fagott beherrschte.

Man findet seinen Namen regelmäßig bei den Concerts spirituels als Interpret seiner Konzerte für Flöte oder Fagott erwähnt, aber auch gemeinsam mit anderen Solisten bei konzertanten Symphonien. Zwischen 1782 und 1790 wird er 37mal erwähnt. Am 11. April 1790 war er beim vorletzten Concert spirituel in einer seiner konzertanten Symphonien zu hören: Er spielte gemeinsam mit Sallentin (Oboe), Jean Lebrun

(Horn) und Étienne Ozi (Fagott). Letzterer war als Fagottvirtuose ganz bestimmt der bedeutendste Konkurrent Deviennes. Doch ist anzunehmen, dass sich die beiden schätzten, da Ozi am 24. März 1780 zum ersten Mal eine Komposition Deviennes bei einem Concert spirituel spielte, u.zw. ein Fagottkonzert.

Zusätzlich zu seiner Aktivität als Konzertmusiker war Devienne auch ein bedeutender Pädagoge. So gehörte er zu den Lehrern, die die erste Pariser Institution für Musikerziehung gründeten, nämlich die École de musique municipale (Städtische Musikschule), deren Ziel es anfangs war, die für die Festveranstaltungen der Republik benötigten Musiker auszubilden, bevor sie 1795 zum Pariser Konservatorium wurde.

In diesem Rahmen veröffentlichte Devienne im selben Jahr seine Flötenschule, die lange Zeit ein Standardwerk blieb. Wie Fétis angibt, wurde diese Flötenschule mehrfach veröffentlicht und im Laufe der verschiedenen Ausgaben korrigiert und bearbeitet; so weist Devienne in der ersten Ausgabe deutlich darauf hin, dass er sich weigert, die neuen Klappen zu verwenden, die das Spiel bestimmter mit Versetzungszeichen versehener Töne erleichtern, oder solche, durch die der tiefe Tonumfang der Flöte erweitert werden kann. Doch in Ausgaben, die nach seinem Tod erschienen, kam der Flötenschule zwar Deviennes Ruf weiterhin zugute, doch diese Ablehnung des Autors wurde übergangen und Informationen über die nun allgemein verwendeten Klappen hinzugefügt. Zu bemerken ist, dass Devienne für das Fagott nicht das Gleiche tat. Für dieses Instrument gab Étienne Ozi, dessen Laufbahn in Paris ganz identisch verlief, mehrere Lehrwerke heraus, unter denen eine erste Méthode 1787 veröffentlicht wurde.

Deviennes Kompositionen bestehen zum Großteil aus Werken für diese beiden Instrumente: Querflöte und Fagott. Er schenkte seinen Instrumenten ein recht bedeutendes Repertoire in verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen: Sonaten mit Klavierbegleitung, Duos (zwei Flöten oder zwei Fagotte), Trios und Quartette, bei denen jedes Instrument von Streichern umgeben ist (Flöte oder Fagott mit Violine

oder Bratsche und Violoncello / Flöte oder Fagott mit Violine, Bratsche und Violoncello).

Der große Erfolg der Blasinstrumente, der in Paris am Ende des 18. Jahrhundert zu beobachten ist und ab der Zeit der Revolution weiter zunimmt, ermunterte Devienne auch zu einigen Kompositionen, in denen die Klarinetten oder Hörner in verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen zum Zug kommen. Außerdem komponierte er für Blasinstrumente einige konzertante Symphonien, die bei den Pariser Konzerten eine sehr geschätzte Gattung waren.

Daneben schrieb er ein Dutzend Flötenkonzerte, vier Konzerte für Fagott und zwei für Horn. Als Musiker im Dienst der Republik komponierte er auch patriotische Lieder und Werke für Blasorchester.

Ebenfalls erwähnenswert ist, dass Devienne neben all dieser Instrumentalmusik ein Dutzend komischer Opern schrieb, die alle aus der Zeit der Revolution stammen: von Mariage clandestin (Eine heimliche Ehe, 1790) über Les Visitandines (Die Salesianerinnen, 1792), ein Werk, das von Fétis erwähnt wird und anscheinend besonders erfolgreich war, bis zu Valet de deux maîtres (Diener zweier Herren, 1799).

Die in der vorliegenden Aufnahme zusammengestellten Trios stammen aus zwei Sammlungen, die für diese Besetzung herausgegeben wurden: 6 Trios pour flûte, violon et violoncelle (1783) und 6 Trios pour basson, violon et violoncelle (ca 1782). Es handelt sich somit um Kompositionen, die noch in der Zeit des Ancien Régime entstanden sind.

In Hinblick auf die Kompositionen der Revolutionszeit kann man übrigens feststellen, dass die Besetzungen von Trios in erster Linie Blasinstrumenten (zwei Klarinetten und Fagott / Flöte, Klarinette und Fagott) vorbehalten sind. Diese Trios mit Streichern aus den Jahren 1782 oder 1783 sind Kompositionen eines etwa zwanzigjährigen Musikers.

In dieser Zeit, in der die klassische Musiksprache und die Einflüsse Haydns sowie der Mannheimer Schule sehr bedeutend waren, erfreute sich neben dem Erfolg der

symphonischen Musik, wie man weiß auch die Kammermusikgroßer Beliebtheit. So wurden damals Streichquartette im Überfluss herausgegeben, die Werke verschiedener Komponisten wie Gossec, Vachon, Cambini, Jadin und vieler anderer sind. Doch im Pariser Kontext scheinen Deviennes Kompositionen, bei denen Bläser und Streicher zusammenspielen, höchst originell gewesen zu sein. Hatte er dafür Vorbilder? Es wäre nicht überraschend, wenn ihm Partituren einiger deutscher Komponisten zur Verfügung gestanden wären, und sei es nur durch die vielen Solisten des Mannheimer Orchesters, die sehr regelmäßig bei den Concerts spirituels auftraten. Darunter befanden sich der Flötist Johann Baptist Wendling (1723-1797), der viele Trios und Quartette mit Flöte schrieb, oder der Fagottist Georg Wenzel Ritter (1748-1818), dessen Sammlung von Quartetten mit Fagott 1779 in Paris herausgekommen war. Es steht außer Zweifel, dass Devienne stilistische Vorbilder hatte, denn sowohl die Form als auch die melodische Eleganz sind der Musik ähnlich, die man in Mannheim hören konnte und die auch bei der Entfaltung des Talents eines gewissen Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart eine so bedeutende Rolle spielte!

Die Trios mit Flöte sind dreisätzig, die für Fagott zweisätzig. Die Sonatenhauptsatzform herrscht bei den ersten Sätzen vor, während der Schlusssatz mehrheitlich eine Variations- oder Rondoform hat. Das ermöglicht der Flöte oder dem Fagott sicherlich, von brillanten Variationen oder Episoden zu profitieren, doch kann man daraus auch erkennen, dass Devienne diese Trios nicht schrieb, um seine Instrumente auf Kosten der Streicher zur Geltung zu bringen, die sonst nur eine einfache Begleitfunktion hätten. Ganz im Gegenteil herrscht hier eine von ihm gewollte, schöne Ausgewogenheit zwischen den drei Instrumenten, wobei jedem seine eigenen Variationen zugutekommen. Anerkennenswert ist dabei, dass sich diese Ausgewogenheit durch die Kompositionen aller dieser Trios zieht. Es handelt sich keinesfalls um konzertante Werke für Flöte oder Fagott, sondern Devienne zeigt sich hier als ein wunderbarer Komponist von Kammermusik. Er bestätigt dabei auch ganz deutlich sein

Talent und seine Beherrschung des Komponierens für Violine und Violoncello, wie man auch in seinen Sonaten für Violine und Basso continuo oder in einigen Streichquartetten erkennen könnte.

François Devienne erweist sich ganz einfach als ein bedeutender Komponist der französischen Klassik, den man noch nicht vollkommen entdeckt hat.

Die hier aufgenommenen Trios wurden von François Devienne in einer Zeit geschrieben, in der sich der Instrumentenbau erneuerte und wandelte, was vor allem die Blasinstrumente betraf. Das Aufkommen der Klappen hatte Einfluss auf die Intonation sowie auf die Möglichkeit, die Phrasierung nach und nach zu verändern. In seinem Lehrwerk Nouvelle méthode théorique et pratique pour la flûte (Neues theoretisches und praktisches Lehrbuch für die Flöte) beschreibt François Devienne diese Veränderungen in allen Einzelheiten, bevor er abschließend meint: „Daraus folgt jedoch nicht, dass ich die kleinen Klappen missbilligen möchte, die der gewöhnlichen Flöte durch gerechtfertigte Forschungen hinzugefügt wurden, um den gedeckten Tönen Abhilfe zu schaffen. Diese befinden sich wie etwas das Gis und das As, das B oder das Ais im tiefen Tonbereich. Sie sind in langsamen Stücken sehr nützlich, vor allem, wenn die oben genannten Töne ausgehalten werden. Obwohl ich mich nicht ihrer bediene, heiße ich sie gut, allerdings nur in diesen Fällen“. Aufgrund dieses Textes beschloss Le Petit Trianon, eine Instrumentation zu verwenden, die dem barocken Instrumentenbau näher ist als dem klassischen.

Olivier Riehl spielt auf der Kopie einer Grenser-Flöte von Eugène Krijnen aus Grenadill. Xavier Marquis spielt auf der Kopie eines Prudent-Fagotts, das 2016 von Laurent Verjat hergestellt wurde. Amandine Solano spielt auf einer 1777 in Mittenwald/ Deutschland von Aegidius Klotz gebauten Geige und Cyril Poulet auf einem anonymen osteuropäischen Cello aus dem Ende des 18. Jahrhudert.
