ANTHONY HOLBORNE: PAVANS, GALLIARDS…

 The first collection of pieces for a consort of instruments seems to have been published in England in 1599: Pavans, Galliards, Almains and other short Aeirs both grave, and light, in five parts, for Viols, Violins, or other Musical Winde Instruments. Its author was a certain Anthony Holborne, ‘Gentleman and Servant to her most excellent Majesty’, although there is very little indeed that we know about him apart from his employment

by Elizabeth I. The only information about his career and personal life that has survived is as follows: the date of his marriage — Westminster, 14 June 1584; the fact that he took part in a diplomatic mission to the Netherlands (musicians were commonly used as diplomats, if not spies, at that time) and his death somewhere between 29 November and 1 December 1602. Even though he was in service to the Queen, we know that he also was employed by other members of the British aristocracy of the time, including ‘Sir Richard Champernowne, knight’, to whom the above collection was dedicated.

We may also assume that he maintained close relationships with other important musical personalities of the time, given two introductory dedications that he wrote.

One of these was written in English and was for Thomas Morley’s A plaine and easie Introduction to Practicall Musicke, the leading musical treatise of its time; the second was written in Latin and introduced Giles Farnaby’s Canzonets to foure voices (1598). What is more, John Dowland also dedicated I saw my lady weep, one of the finest melodies of his Second Booke of Songs or Ayres, ‘to the most famous Anthony Holborne’. In conclusion, Holborne’s 1599 collection was published by Thomas Morley and was available for purchase ‘at his ſhop in Gratious-ſtreete’. Holborn was therefore part of the small group of the most renowned London-based musicians of the Elizabethan era.

Holborne, like Dowland, was a lutenist, although he also specialised in the playing 

of instruments with plucked metal strings such as the pandora and the cittern; he had already gained renown on the cittern with the publication of his The Cittarn Schoole in 1597. The very existence of this volume confirms how popular the instrument had become; no school of lute-playing, however, had been published in London since Adrian Le Roy’s treatise in 1574. Two of Holborne’s pandora pieces had been published in William Barley’s New Booke of Tabliture in 1573. Holborne enjoyed a fine reputation as a pandora player, given the well-known letter in which a certain Francis Derrick, resident in the Netherlands, asks Henry Wickham, his English correspondent, to send him the best of all lessons available for the instrument — meaning Holborne’s!

We shall examine Holborne’s Pavans, Galliards… from various aspects, although the type of repertoire and the instruments that he chooses are our principal concern. Dance music was the favourite music of every player of an instrument; these dances originated at a point between popular tradition and aristocratic practice, with such dances passing from one realm to the other. Collections of dance music were common, complete with four-part polyphonic versions in four and more rarely 5 parts. This repertoire was almost certainly heard in Great Britain from the time of Henry VIII onwards, for t was during his reign that a large number of French composer and Italian musicians arrived and took up positions at Court.

The more complex style of writing for these polyphonic dances meant that they soon became less suited for dancing; they seem to have been intended simply to be enjoyed by the players and by those listening. This is very much evident in Holborne’s pieces. As the title states, pavanes and galliards make up the majority of the volume; it is well known that many of these pieces are not titled either as pavanes or galliards, even though their style defines them clearly as one or the other. Many of these works are given English, Latin, Italian and even Spanish titles, some of which are highly descriptive (The Funeralls, Infernum, Paradizo, The image of Melancholly, The Fruit of Love, Hermoza) whilst others 

are less so (Ecce quam Bonum, The Choice, Nec Invidio). Roughly speaking, the pavanes appear first in the volume; the majority of these are associated with a galliard. These pieces are generally grouped in twos and are composed in the same key. Of the 65 pieces in all, 53 are pavanes and galliards; the final pair of these is Laft will and testament (a pavane) & galliard. The eleven remaining pieces are allemandes or pieces resembling them in binary rhythm as well as few pieces in ternary rhythm. It is clear that there are not enough of these pieces to allow the player to form complete suites from them containing a pavane, a galliard, an allemande and an air. The volume entitled Lachrimae or seven Tears that John Dowland published seven years later in 1604 is conceived in the same spirit. It is interesting to note that the initial theme of Holborne’s Pavana Ploravit is the same as the first of Dowland’s Lachrimae Pavans. Could this be Dowland paying discreet homage to Holborne? In any case, the richness of the five-part writing confirms the purely instrumental character of the music and its distance from music actually intended for dancing, although those who perform these works must of course always bear the characters and tempi of the dances concerned in mind!

The instruments to be used for these pieces are clearly stated on the title page: first viols, then violins or wind instruments. Dowland’s volume, however, calls for viols and violins. How should we interpret these instructions? The consort of viols was the most typical ensemble of English instrumental music of the period, being regarded as equal to the most intimate vocal ensemble as can be seen in the phrase ‘apt for viols and voices’ found frequently in collections of madrigals at that time. We know that violins began to make an appearance in English musical life with the arrival of Italian musicians such as the Lupo family during the reign of Henry VIII, although we may wonder, given iconographical evidence from that time, whether they were most often used for actual dance accompaniments.

It was only later, during the first quarter of the 17th century, that they were called 

for — although rarely — in pieces of pure instrumental music such as fantasias.

We know that wind instruments such as flutes, shawms, tournebouts, cornetts and trombones were also employed from the time of Henry VIII. As was also the case on the Continent, groups of town musicians known as waits combined the several types of wind instruments; these players could certainly have played this music, but would the harmonies of the pavanes and the subtle rhythms of the galliards really have suited them well? Such alternatives of instrumentation seem rather to have been an editorial and commercial attempt to persuade as many musicians as possible to acquire these scores.

No polyphonic instruments are mentioned on the title page of the volume, although their use would seem to be highly suited to this type of music. Some of these pieces, however, also exist in versions for cittern in The Cittarn Schoole or for lute in various manuscript sources; the fact that Holborne was himself a skilled player of the lute, cittern and pandora would, after all, only have encouraged players to add these instruments to the consort of viols. To return once more to Dowland’s Lachrimae, the volume contains an authentic lute part that in general contains the basic harmonic structure of the composition alongside some ornamental figurations. Another trace of this practice of mixing types of instruments can be found in the volume published by Thomas Morley in that same year of 1599: The first book of Consort Lessons. This was the first publication to include pieces for another typically English ensemble: the broken consort. This ensemble was made up of a dessus de viole or violin, a bass viol, a flute and three plucked string instruments, these being the lute, cittern and pandora — all instruments that Holborne himself played. The lute was principally used for the performance of divisions, the cittern to underline the rhythm and the pandora to provide a type of basso continuo. We should also note that several of Holborne’s pieces were also published in arrangements for broken consort in Philip Rosseter’s Lessons for Consort (1609). The use of keyboards in performance of this music — here a virginal and an ottavino, a small spinet playing 

one octave higher than written — is also mentioned in various sources, some of them iconographical.

Just as Holborne himself spent time in the Netherlands as a diplomat, his music also swiftly crossed national boundaries; several of his works are to be found in an anthology of instrumental music published in Hamburg in 1607, the Ausserlesener Paduanen und Galliarden… in Sonderheit auff Fiolen zu gebrauchen….

It only remains for the listener to let himself be soothed by the languor and the theatricality of the pavanes, by the vigour and the elegance of the galliards, by the originality and spontaneity of the other pieces in free style — and to let his imagination interpret certain titles for him.

A conjunction of music, dance and poetry Anthony Holborne seems to have been a frequent visitor to the group of artists, principally poets, that gravitated around Mary Sidney, Countess of Pembroke. Whilst certain pieces can be directly linked to her — Paradizo was based on the poem Arcadia by her brother Philip Sidney and The Funeralls on the deaths of the Countess’ parents and brother — other titles are more mysterious. The pavane Bona Speranza that opens the volume is a possible allusion to the Cape of Good Hope, one of the many ports of call of Sir Francis Drake, at that time admiral of Elizabeth I’s navy, and gives the entire collection an aura of travel, of far-off lands and of conquests. This exoticism returns in the pieces with Spanish titles, Hermoza and Muy Linda, for this was also the time when relations between Spain and England were at their most tense; this could well be irony on Holborne’s part as well as a reference to Elizabeth I’s victories over Philip II of Spain, although the pieces could also be regarded as being in praise of a woman’s beauty, be she Elizabeth I, Mary Sidney or an unknown other.

What is the Fruit of Love? To whom did Holborne dedicate the Honey-Suckle, a flower that symbolises eternal fidelity? Who painted the Image of Melancholly? What exactly is the legacy that Holborne describes in the Last Will and Testament? And why do the Muses weep?

The poetic dimension of Anthony Holborne’s music is an exception in English instrumental music as a whole; these dances allow us to imagine them according to our own tastes and personal history, for each theme or symbol carries a different meaning for all of us. This music leaves us free to dream.

 En 1599 paraît en Angleterre ce qui semble être le premier recueil édité de pièces pour consort : Pavans, Galliards, Almains and other short Aeirs both grave, and light, in five parts, for Viols, Violins, or other Musical Winde Instruments. L’auteur en est Anthony Holborne, « Gentleman and Servant to her most excellent Majesty ». Mais, au-delà du titre qui rattache le compositeur au service de la reine Élisabeth, que sait-on d’Anthony Holborne ? On ignore quasiment tout de sa carrière et de sa vie, si ce n’est la date de son mariage, le 14 juin 1584 à Westminster, une mission diplomatique (comme le faisaient souvent les musiciens) aux Pays-Bas, et, enfin, la date approximative de son décès, entre le 29 novembre et le 1er décembre 1602. S'il était au service de la Reine, on sait qu’il fut également actif auprès de différentes personnes de l’aristocratie ; c’est le cas de « Sir Richard Champernowne, knight », à qui il dédie le recueil de 1599.

D’autre part, on peut supposer qu’il entretient des rapports très étroits avec d’importantes personnalités musicales. Ainsi, on lui doit deux poèmes dédicatoires, l’un en anglais destiné au principal traité musical de son temps, A plaine and easie Introduction to Practicall Musicke de Thomas Morley (1597), l’autre en latin, introduisant le recueil de Canzonets to foure voices de Giles Farnaby (1598) ; de plus, en 1600, dans son Second Booke of Songs or Ayres, John Dowland dédie l’une de ses plus belles mélodies (I saw my lady weep) « to the most famous Anthony Holborne ». Enfin, le recueil de 1599 est édité par Thomas Morley et peut être acheté « at his fhop in Gratious-ftreete ». Holborne fait donc partie du cénacle des plus illustres musiciens londoniens de l’époque élisabéthaine.

Tout comme John Dowland, Anthony Holborne doit être luthiste. Il s’est même spécialisé dans le jeu des instruments à cordes pincées métalliques, la bandora et le cistre pour lequel il s’est déjà fait connaître en 1597 avec la publication de The Cittarn Schoole. 

L’existence de cette méthode de cistre confirme l’importance du jeu de cet instrument alors qu’il n’y avait pas encore eu à Londres de publication de méthode de luth, si ce n’est la traduction du traité d’Adrian Le Roy en 1574. L’année précédente, deux de ses pièces pour bandora avaient été publiées dans le New Booke of Tabliture de William Barley. D’ailleurs, la réputation de Holborne en tant que joueur de bandora est importante si l’on considère cette lettre maintes fois citée dans laquelle un certain Francis Derrick, séjournant aux Pays-Bas, demande à son correspondant anglais Henry Wickham de lui faire parvenir les « leçons » les plus importantes pour cet instrument… celles de Holborne !

Le recueil des Pavans, Galliards… de Holborne mérite d’être examiné sur plusieurs aspects, principalement le type de répertoire et les instrumentations qu’il suggère.

Durant la Renaissance, la musique de danse constitue l’un des répertoires de prédilection des instrumentistes. L’origine de ces danses se situe entre les traditions populaires et la pratique des danses aristocratiques ; parfois, certaines d’entre elles passent d’un domaine à l’autre. C’est vers le milieu du XVIe siècle que commencent à fleurir, principalement en Italie et en France, les recueils de musique de danse qui bénéficient de l’écriture de versions polyphoniques à quatre voix, et plus rarement à cinq voix. Ce répertoire est certainement connu en Angleterre dès l’époque d’Henry VIII, où abondent les sources de musique française, et ensuite à la fin du siècle, période durant laquelle de nombreux compositeurs et instrumentistes italiens s’y installent et occupent des fonctions à la cour.

Peu à peu, l’écriture plus complexe de ces danses polyphoniques fait qu’elles deviennent moins aptes à la pratique de la danse, semblant être destinées au seul plaisir des instrumentistes et de leurs auditeurs. C’est bien ce que l’on peut constater dans les pièces de Holborne. Ainsi que le stipule le titre, ce sont les pavanes et gaillardes qui constituent l’essentiel du recueil : fait notoire, bon nombre de ces pièces ne portent pas la mention de « pavane » ou de « gaillarde », même si, à la lecture de ces pièces, il s’agit bien de ces caractères de danses. Une grande partie de ces pièces sont identifiées par des 

titres anglais, latins, italiens ou même espagnols, dont certains sont très suggestifs (The Funeralls, Infernum, Paradizo, The image of Melancholly, The Fruit of Love, Hermoza…), d’autres sont moins précis (Ecce quam Bonum, The Choice, Nec Invidio). Grosso modo, dans l’ordre du recueil viennent d’abord les pavanes, dont la plupart sont associées à une gaillarde, ces pièces étant majoritairement groupées par deux et écrites dans le même ton.

Sur l’ensemble des 65 pièces, 53 sont des pavanes et gaillardes, dont le dernier couple est Laft will and tesftament [pavan & galliard. Les onze dernières pièces sont surtout des allemandes (ou pièces de rythme binaire proches de cette danse) et quelques pièces ternaires. Il est évident que le nombre restreint de ces pièces empêche le musicien de disposer de suffisamment de ces caractères pour constituer autant de suites complètes qui contiendraient des pavanes, des gaillardes, des allemandes et des Aeirs. Tout compte fait, le recueil des Lachrimae or seven Tears que John Dowland publie quelques années plus tard, en 1604, est conçu dans le même esprit. Il est d’ailleurs amusant de noter que le motif initial de la Pavana Ploravit de Holborne est le même que celui de la première des Lachrimae Pavans de Dowland ! Serait-ce un hommage discret de Dowland à Holborne ?

Enfin, la richesse de l’écriture à cinq voix confirme bien la destination purement instrumentale de ces pièces et leur distanciation par rapport à la pratique de la danse, ce qui n’empêche pas que les caractères et les tempos de ces danses doivent rester présents à l’esprit des interprètes !

En ce qui concerne l’instrumentation de ces pièces, la page de titre est explicite : elle stipule dans l’ordre les violes, les violons ou d’autres instruments à vent. Quant à lui, le recueil de Dowland spécifie aussi les violes et les violons. Comment faut-il interpréter ces informations ? Il semble évident que le « consort of viols » est l’ensemble le plus emblématique de la musique instrumentale anglaise, considéré dans ce pays également comme le complice le plus intime des ensembles vocaux ; la mention « apt for viols and voices » que l’on trouve dans les recueils de madrigaux en est une preuve. Néanmoins, 

on sait qu’avec l’arrivée des musiciens italiens – les Lupo déjà durant le règne d’Henry VIII –, les violons font également leur apparition dans la vie musicale anglaise. Mais, ainsi qu’en témoignent certaines iconographies, ne sont-ils pas plus souvent utilisés pour accompagner les danseurs ?

Ce n’est que plus tard, dans le premier quart du XVIIe siècle, qu’ils sont mentionnés à quelques rares occasions dans les pièces de musique instrumentale pure que sont les fantaisies. Quand aux instruments à vent, leur pratique est aussi attestée, avec une certaine diversité (flûtes, chalemies, tournebouts, cornets et trombones), dès l’époque d’Henry VIII. Comme sur le continent, les formations de musiciens urbains (les waits) réunissent des formations mixtes d’instruments à embouchure et d’instruments à anche.

Certes, ils peuvent aussi jouer ces pièces. Mais le raffinement des harmonies des pavanes, la subtilité rythmique des gaillardes leur conviennent-ils si bien ? Ne faut-il pas voir avant tout dans cette alternative instrumentale une simple mention éditoriale et commerciale destinée à convaincre plusieurs types d’instrumentistes d’acquérir des partitions ?

Aucun instrument polyphonique n’est mentionné dans le titre du recueil. Néanmoins, leur usage semble tout à fait attesté pour ce type de répertoire. Certaines de ces pièces existent d’ailleurs dans des versions pour le cistre dans The Cittarn Schoole ou pour le luth dans diverses sources manuscrites et le fait que Holborne soit lui-même virtuose du luth, du cistre et de la bandora ne peut qu’inciter les interprètes à ajouter ces instruments au « consort of viols ». Pour revenir une fois de plus aux Lachrimae de Dowland, ce recueil contient une authentique partie de luth qui, en quelque sorte, se voit confier le jeu de la structure harmonique de la composition avec quelques figures ornementales. Une autre trace de cette pratique du mélange des instruments est le recueil que Thomas Morley publie exactement la même année, en 1599 (The first book of Consort Lessons) : il s’agit de la première publication de pièces pour une autre formation typiquement anglaise, le « broken consort », qui associe un dessus de viole (ou un violon), une basse de viole, 

une flûte et trois instruments à cordes pincées, le luth, le cistre et la bandora, justement ceux dont joue Holborne. Le luth y est utilisé principalement pour jouer des diminutions, le cistre pour confirmer la pulsation rythmique, la bandora pour réaliser une sorte de basse continue. Il faut d’ailleurs signaler que quelques pièces du recueil de Holborne ont été publiées dans les Lessons for Consort (1609) de Philip Rosseter, dans des arrangements pour broken consort.

Enfin, l’usage des claviers (ici, le virginal et un ottavino, petite épinette sonnant à l’octave supérieure) est tout autant attesté dans le mélange des instruments par différentes sources, dont certaines sont iconographiques.

Si Holborne a séjourné comme diplomate aux Pays-Bas, sa musique a aussi franchi assez rapidement les frontières ; ainsi trouve-t-on certaines de ses pièces dans une anthologie de musique instrumentale publiée à Hambourg en 1607, Ausserlesener Paduanen und Galliarden… in Sonderheit auff Fiolen zu gebrauchen…

Il restera à l’auditeur de se laisser bercer par la langueur ou la théâtralité des pavanes, par la vigueur ou l’élégance des gaillardes, par l’originalité ou la spontanéité des autres pièces aux caractères plus libres, en enfin de laisser son imagination interpréter certains titres...

La rencontre de la musique, de la danse et de la poésie Anthony Holborne semble avoir fréquenté de manière régulière le cercle d’artistes, notamment de poètes, gravitant autour de Mary Sidney, la Countess of Pembroke. Si certaines pièces sont en relation directe avec elle (Paradizo a été composé d’après le poème Arcadia de son frère Philip Sidney, The Funeralls pour le décès des parents et du frère de la Comtesse), d’autres titres sont plus mystérieux : la pavane Bona Speranza ouvrant le recueil fait peut-être allusion au Cap de Bonne-Espérance, l’une des nombreuses escales de Francis Drake, alors général de la flotte élisabéthaine, donnant dès le début de cette œuvre une sensation de voyage, de lointain et de conquêtes. On retrouve cet exotisme avec des pièces aux titres castillans, Hermoza et Muy Linda, à un moment où l’Espagne et l’Angleterre entretiennent des relations particulièrement tendues : on peut imaginer que ce soit un trait d’ironie de la part d’Holborne et un clin d’œil aux victoires d'Élisabeth sur Philippe II d'Espagne, mais on peut y voir aussi les louanges de la beauté d'une femme, Élisabeth bien sûr, Mary Sidney ou qui sait…

Quel est ce Fruit of Love ? À qui Holborne dédie cet Honey-Suckle, un chèvre-feuille symbolisant la fidélité éternelle? Que dépeint cette Image of Melancholly ? Quel est ce legs qu’Holborne évoque dans ce Last Will and Testament ? Et pourquoi les muses pleurentelles ?

La dimension poétique de la musique d’Anthony Holborne est exceptionnelle dans le répertoire instrumental anglais, ces danses donnent à notre imagination la possibilité d’interpréter chacune d’entre elles selon notre goût et notre histoire, chaque thème ou symbole portant avec lui des significations différentes et chaque musique nous laissant rêver librement.

 Im Jahr 1599 erscheint in England der anscheinend erste veröffentlichte Band von Stücken für Consort: Pavans, Galliards, Almains and other short Aeirs both grave, and light, in five parts, for Viols, Violins, or other Musical Winde Instruments. Der Autor heißt Anthony Holborne und ist „Gentleman and Servant to her most excellent Majesty“. Doch was weiß man von Anthony Holborne, wenn man vom Titel des Bandes absieht, der aussagt, dass der Komponisten im Dienst der Königin Elisabeth steht? Über seine Karriere und sein Leben ist fast nichts bekannt, außer dem Datum seiner Hochzeit, dem 14. Juni 1584 in Westminster, einer diplomatischen Mission (wie sie oft von Musikern übernommen wurde) in den Niederlanden und schließlich seinem ungefähren Sterbedatum zwischen dem 29.

November und dem 1. Dezember 1602. Er stand also im Dienst der Königin, doch ist auch bekannt, dass er bei verschiedenen Personen der Aristokratie tätig war, wie etwa bei „Sir Richard Champernowne, knight“, dem er diesen Band 1599 widmete.

Ganz wie John Dowland war Anthony Holborne sicher Lautenspieler. Er spezialisierte sich sogar auf das Spiel von Instrumenten mit gezupften Metallsaiten, nämlich auf die Bandura und die Cister, durch die er schon 1597 mit der Veröffentlichung von The Cittarn Schoole bekannt wurde. Das Vorhandensein dieser Methode bestätigt, wie bedeutend dieses Instrument war, während es damals in London, abgesehen von der Übersetzung von Adrian Le Roys Abhandlung im Jahre 1574, noch zu keiner Publikation einer Lautenmethode gekommen war. Im Jahr zuvor waren zwei seiner Stücke für Bandura im New Booke of Tabliture von William Barley veröffentlicht worden. Holborne hatte übrigens einen guten Ruf als Banduraspieler, wenn man den oft zitierten Brief eines gewissen Francis Derrick in Betracht zieht, der, als er sich in den Niederlanden aufhielt, seinen englischen Korrespondenten Henry Wickham bat, ihm die wichtigsten „Lektionen“ für dieses Instrument du besorgen ... nämlich die von Holborne!

Holbornes Band der Pavans, Galliards ... verdient es, unter mehreren Gesichtspunkten betrachtet zu werden, vor allem unter denen der Art des Repertoires und der von ihm vorgeschlagenen Instrumentierungen. In der Renaissancezeit bildete die Tanzmusik eines der Lieblingsrepertoires der Instrumentalisten. Der Ursprung dieser Tänze ist zwischen den volkstümlichen Traditionen und den aristokratischen Tänzen zu suchen. Manchmal gingen einige davon von einer Kategorie in die andere über. In der Mitte des 16. Jh. wurden vor allem in Italien und in Frankreich Sammelbände mit Tanzmusik beliebt, denen die Komposition von vierstimmigen, seltener sogar fünfstimmigen polyphonen Fassungen zugute kam. Dieses Repertoire war in England sicher schon ab der Zeit Heinrichs VIII. bekannt, in der es sehr viele Quellen französischer Musik gab. Danach ließen sich am Ende des Jahrhunderts viele italienische Komponisten und Instrumentalisten in England nieder, wo sie Posten am Hof bekleideten.

Nach und nach wurde die Kompositionsweise dieser polyphonen Tänze komplexer, so dass sie für die Tanzpraxis weniger geeignet und anscheinend einzig zum Vergnügen 

der Musiker und ihrer Zuhörer bestimmt waren. Das ist jedenfalls bei Holbornes Stücken festzustellen. Wie der Titel angibt, bilden Pavanen und Galliarden den wesentlichen Bestandteil des Bandes: Dabei ist es allerdings offenkundig, dass viele dieser Stücke darin zwar nicht als „Pavane“ oder „Galliarde“ bezeichnet werden, bei näherer Betrachtung jedoch eben diesen Tanzarten zuzuordnen sind. Ein Großteil dieser Werke werden mit englischen, lateinischen, italienischen und sogar spanischen Titeln bezeichnet, von denen einige sehr suggestiv sind (The Funeralls, Infernum, Paradizo, The image of Melancholly, The Fruit of Love, Hermoza) ... andere sind weniger präzis (Ecce quam Bonum, The Choice, Nec Invidio).

Im Großen und Ganzen kommen in der Reihenfolge des Bandes zuerst die Pavanen, von denen die Mehrzahl mit Galliarden kombiniert sind, wobei diese Stücke größtenteils in Zweiergruppen zusammengestellt und in derselben Tonart geschrieben sind. Von den insgesamt 65 Stücken sind 53 Pavanen und Galliarden, deren letztes Paar Laft will and tesftament (pavan) & galliard ist. Die letzten elf Stücke sind vor allem Allemanden (oder Stücke mit binärem Rhythmus, die diesem Tanz ähneln) sowie einige ternäre Stücke.

Offensichtlich ist, dass der Musiker aufgrund der beschränkten Anzahl der Stücke nicht über genügend verschiedene Tänze verfügt, um komplette Suiten zu bilden, die Pavanen, Gaillarden, Allemanden und Aeirs beinhalten. Alles in allem ist der Band der Lachrimae or seven Tears, den John Dowland einige Jahre später veröffentlichte, im selben Geist konzipiert. Es ist übrigens amüsant festzustellen, dass das Eingangsmotiv von Holbornes Pavana Ploravit dasselbe ist wie das der ersten der Lachrimae Pavans von Dowland! Sollte es sich um eine diskrete Hommage Dowlands auf Holborne handeln? Schließlich bestätigt der Reichtum des fünfstimmigen Satzes die rein instrumentale Bestimmung dieser Stücke sowie ihre Distanz gegenüber der Tanzpraxis, die Charaktere und die Tempi dieser Tänze müssen den Interpreten allerdings nicht minder im Geist präsent bleiben!

Was die Instrumentierung dieser Stücke betrifft, so ist die Titelseite explizit: Sie gibt ausdrücklich der Reihe nach die Gamben, Geigen und andere Blasinstrumente an. 

Auch in Dowlands Band werden die Gamben und die Geigen genannt. Wie sind diese Informationen aber zu interpretieren? Es scheint offensichtlich, dass der „Consort of viols“ das typischste Ensemble der englischen Instrumentalmusik war, das in diesem Land auch als engster Partner der Vokalensembles galt, was die in Madrigalsammlungen zu findende Angabe „apt for Viols and voices“ beweist. Dennoch hielten, wie man weiß, mit der Ankunft italienischer Musiker – die Lupos bereits während der Herrschaft Heinrichs VIII. – auch die Geigen Einzug in das englische Musikleben. Doch wurden sie nicht, wie bestimmte Bildquellen bezeugen, öfter zur Begleitung von Tänzern eingesetzt?

Erst später, d.h. im ersten Viertel des 17. Jh., wurden sie bei manchen seltenen Gelegenheiten bei reinen Instrumentalstücken – wie etwa bei den Fantasien – erwähnt.

Was die Blasinstrumente betrifft, so ist ihre Verwendung ebenfalls ab der Regierungszeit Heinrichs VIII. belegt, wobei eine gewisse Vielfalt festzustellen ist (Flöten, Schalmeien, Tournebouts, Zinken und Posaunen). Wie auf dem Kontinent bestanden die städtischen Musikerensembles (die Waits) aus gemischten Zusammenstellungen, in denen sowohl Instrumente mit Mundstück als auch Rohrblattinstrumente vertreten waren. Natürlich können auch sie diese Stücke spielen. Doch sind sie für die harmonische Feinheit dieser Pavanen und die rhythmische Nuanciertheit der Galliarden gut geeignet? Sollte man in dieser instrumentalen Alternative nicht vor allem eine einfache publizistische und kommerzielle Angabe sehen, die dazu diente, verschiedene Arten von Musikern davon zu überzeugen, diese Notenbücher zu kaufen?

Im Titel des Bandes werden dagegen keine polyphonen Instrumente erwähnt, obwohl ihre Verwendung für diese Art von Repertoire durchaus belegt scheint. Einige der Stücke gibt es übrigens in Fassungen für Cister in The Cittarn Schoole oder für Laute in verschiedenen Handschriften, und die Tatsache, dass Holborne selbst ein Virtuose auf der Laute, der Cister und der Bandura war, kann die Interpreten nur ermuntern, diese Instrumente zum „Consort of viols“ hinzuzufügen. Um nochmals auf die Lachrimae von Dowland zurückzukommen, so 

ist dazu zu sagen, dass dieser Band eine echte Lautenstimme enthält, der in gewisser Hinsicht das Spiel mit der harmonischen Kompositionsstruktur durch einige ornamentale Figuren anvertraut wird. Eine andere Spur dieser Gepflogenheit, die Instrumente zu kombinieren, ist der Band, den Thomas Morley genau im selben Jahr 1599 herausgab (The first book of Consort Lessons): Es handelt sich um die erste Veröffentlichung von Stücken für ein anderes typisch englisches Ensemble, das „Broken consort“, das aus einer Diskantgambe (oder einer Violine), einer Bassgambe, einer Flöte und drei Zupfinstrumenten, einer Laute, einer Cister und einer Bandura bestand, also aus genau den Instrumenten, die Holborne spielte. Die Laute wurde vor allem dazu eingesetzt, die Diminutionen zu spielen, die Cister sollte die rhythmischen Schläge betonen und die Bandura eine Art Basso continuo spielen. Übrigens ist erwähnenswert, dass einige Stücke aus Holbornes Band in den Lessons for Consort (1609) von Philip Rosseter in den Bearbeitungen für Broken consort veröffentlicht wurden. Schließlich ist aber auch in verschiedenen Quellen, von denen einige Bildquellen sind, die Verwendung von Tasteninstrumenten (hier das Virginal und ein Ottavino, ein kleines Spinett, das eine Oktave höher klingt) innerhalb dieser Zusammenstellung von Instrumenten nachgewiesen.

Holborne selbst hielt sich als Diplomat in den Niederlanden auf, doch auch seine Musik überschritt rasch die Grenzen; so sind einige seiner Stücke in einer 1607 in Hamburg veröffentlichten Anthologie für Instrumentalmusik zu finden: Ausserlesener Paduanen und Galliarden… in Sonderheit auff Fiolen zu gebrauchen….

Dem Zuhörer bleibt es überlassen, sich von der Wehmut oder der Theatralität der Pavanen, von der Vitalität oder der Eleganz der Galliarden sowie von der Originalität oder der Spontanität der anderen Stücke mit freierem Charakter einnehmen und seiner Phantasie bei der Interpretation der Titel freien Lauf zu lassen.

Die Begegnung zwischen Musik, Tanz und Poesie Anthony Holborne scheint regelmäßig in Künstlerkreisen verkehrt zu haben, besonders in denen der Dichter, die um Mary Sidney, der Countess of Pembroke, kreisten. Stehen einige seiner Stücke direkt mit ihr in Verbindung (Paradizo wurde nach dem Gedicht Arcadia ihres Bruders Philip Sidney komponiert, The Funeralls zum Tod der Eltern und des Bruders der Gräfin), sind andere Titel geheimnisvoller: Die Pavane Bona Speranza, mit der der Sammelbandes beginnt, spielt vielleicht auf das Kap der Guten Hoffnung an, das einer der vielen Zwischenstopps von Francis Drake war, dem damaligen General der Elisabethanischen Flotte, und verleiht dem Werk von Anfang an ein Flair von Reise, Ferne und Eroberungen.

Diese Exotik findet sich bei anderen Stücken mit kastilischen Titeln wieder, wie etwa bei Hermoza und Muy Linda, und das in einer Zeit, in der die Beziehungen zwischen Spanien und England besonders angespannt waren: Man kann sich dabei vorstellen, dass es sich um eine ironische Anspielung Holbornes auf die Siege Elisabeths über Philipp II. von Spanien handelt, doch ist es auch möglich, darin einen Lobgesang auf die Schönheit einer Frau sehen, natürlich auf Elisabeth, auf Mary Sidney oder wer weiß auf wen ...

Wer ist diese Fruit of Love? Wem widmete Holborne sein Honey-Suckle, ein Geisblatt, das ewige Treue symbolisiert? Was schildert Image of Melancholly? Welches Vermächtnis meinte Holborne in Last Will and Testament? Und warum weinen die Musen?

Die poetische Dimension der Musik Anthony Holbornes ist im englischen Instrumentalrepertoire etwas Außergewöhnliches, und diese Tänze bieten unserer Phantasie die Möglichkeit, jeden davon unserem Geschmack und unserer Geschichte gemäß zu interpretieren, da jedes Thema oder Symbol verschiedene Bedeutungen in sich birgt und jede Musik uns frei träumen lässt.
