The title alone of this recording is enigmatic enough: who or what are these ‘nymphs of the Rhine’ that appear in a collection of twelve sonatas for two bass viols? The listener will seek in vain for the slightest musical imitation of the river’s flowing waters or of the imposing countryside that rises from the river’s banks in the various movements that make up these works; there are no Rhinemaidens or Loreleis in view anywhere.

Johannes Schenck made no use of such customary terms as Sonatas, Suites, Works for Viol etc. in any of his published works. His several volumes of compositions, in order of appearance, were Uitgevondene tyd and konst-oeffeningen (1688), Il Giardino armonico (1691), Scherzi musicali (n.d.), Le Nymphe di Rheno (1702), L’écho du Danube (1706) and Les fantaisies bisarres de la goutte (n.d.), all of which were published by Estienne Roger in Amsterdam. The title of Nymphe di Rheno is at least relatively easy to explain: the volume was dedicated to his patron the Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm I, whose titles are listed on the flyleaf of the volume: the first of these was Conte Palatino del Rheno.

We need seek no further.

Who was Johannes Schenck, this violist whose surname and Christian name changed their spellings with great regularity — Jan, Johann, Johannes, Schenk, Schenck — so as to correspond to local usage in various countries? For Le Nymphe di Rheno, following a common habit of the time, he used an Italian transliteration of his name: Giovanni Schenck.

We know very little of his life and circumstances. Born in Amsterdam, he is first mentioned in a list of musicians employed in the service of Johann Wilhelm in Düsseldorf in 1696. We may well assume that he had remained in the city of his birth until that time, for his first volume of works for viola da gamba and basso continuo was 

published in 1688; a second volume of pieces, this time for two voices, two viols and basso continuo entitled C. van Eekes koninklyke harpliederen was published in 1693 or 1694. Such publications with Dutch titles were clearly intended for customers in the Netherlands; we may suppose that Schenck’s ambitions went no further than his own compatriots at that time.

The questions that intrigue us the most concern his musical training and his training as a viol player in particular. The viola da gamba was particularly popular in the Netherlands at that time; even though the violin, Italian in origin, made its mark in these regions and in Germany from the beginning of the 17th century onwards, the bass viol was equally valued in chamber music. One of the leading ‘French violists’ was, after all the Brussels-born Nicolas Hotman (ca. 1610-1663). The viola da gamba was frequently called upon for instrumental music in the Netherlands by composers Nicolaus a Kempis and Philippe van Wicchel, although it was Carolus Hacquart (1640-1701) who was known as one of the greatest performers on the instrument.

Hacquart seems to have been born in Bruges and to have spent his entire career in Amsterdam and The Hague. Chelys, his volume of pieces for bass viol, was published in The Hague in 1686; this was also the year that Marin Marais published his Premier Livre des Pièces de Viole in Paris. Hacquart’s volume, like that of Marais, was for solo viol. Marais published a basso continuo part for his collection in 1689 and the publisher Estienne Roger announced the publication of a volume of suites with basso continuo by Hacquart in Amsterdam in 1703; this has unfortunately not survived and it is impossible to know if it was a version of Chelys that had been provided with a basso continuo part.

The form of the French Suite was well known to Dutch composers and it is therefore not surprising that the first two collections of Schenck’s pieces for viol should have been made up of suites, even if the form and character of the various sections do not correspond to the French model. In his Scherzi musicali, the presence of a Sonata and a 

Capriccio as well as movements entitled Alla breve and Fuga all point to an Italian stylistic influence, or at least to an idea of Italian style as perceived by German musicians. It is of course extremely possible that Schenck could have worked with Hacquart and that he might also have come into contact with the virtuoso players of the English viol school, given that the Netherlands had been a refuge from the beginning of the 17th century onwards for many English musicians who had fled their country because of the wars of religion.

Schenck tackled a completely different genre in Le Nymphe di Rheno. It is more than likely that his employment in the Elector’s service gave him the opportunity to discover new musical styles and forms; he certainly met other musicians, one of whom was clearly a skilled viol player, for Le Nymphe di Rheno is conceived for two violists of equal talent.

All of the pieces in this anthology are for two bass viols without basso continuo. There is no hierarchy between the two viols, no standard division into melody instrument and accompanying instrument, for the two for the two viols alternate these roles from phrase to phrase; at times, a melody will even be divided note for note between the two instruments. Schenck did not of course invent this technique, as it can be found in English works from the middle of the century onwards such as Matthew Locke’s Fantazies as well as in the Concerts à deux violes égales by Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe. Could Schenck have known these works? Such an unceasing exchange of musical roles necessitated the creation of musical lines that covered the entire range of the viol from top to bottom with a rapidity that is at times astonishing; this resulted in an astonishing alchemy of sound that instrumentalists were required to manage without apparent effort, providing those who listened with the magic of a sound that seemed to flow untrammelled from its source.

Source? The source of the Rhine? Why not? In any case, these sources were certainly the same ones that had nourished the German instrumental repertoire, given that 

the fusion of the suite and the sonata, the French and the Italian styles, had already commenced at the beginning of the 17th century. The legacy of this fusion was to be Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin.

The twelve works that make up the volume all bear the title of Sonata. When we look at these works we can state that Schenck had brought about, and without any particular difficulty, the synthesis known to Couperin as the Goûts reunis: such a task that required real daring from a Frenchman was completely natural to a German composer; to combine the movements of a sonata in the Italian style with the dances of the French suite was no problem to him at all.

The form he most frequently used began with one or more movements in the Italian sonata style, occasionally (as in the 12th) with a movement containing brief AllegroAdagio-Allegro-Adagio sections. This ‘Italian’ introduction is followed by dances that appear in the traditional order of the French suite, notably Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue, although Schenck gives them their Italian translations of Allemanda, Corrente, Sarabanda and Giga. As had become the fashion in French suites of the time of Marais, Schenck sometimes added a few of the dances that Bach would term galanteries: the Gavotte, Bourrée, Menuet and even the characteristically French form of the Rondeau. He used the French terms for all of these dances with the exception of the Gavotte, for which he used the Italian term of Gavotta.

As was also the case in Italian Sonate da camera such as those by Corelli, certain dances are also given a tempo indication; depending on the character of the introductory movement or movements of the Italian sonata, the following Allemanda could be marked either Adagio or Largo.

Schenck also could not shun the musical form that the French — and French violists in particular — valued so highly: the chaconne, or in his Italianised version of the name, Ciaconna. Two monumental examples of the form appear in this collection, the first as 

an introduction to the Sonata IV, the second as the conclusion to Sonata XI. These two sonatas are structurally unusual, with Sonata IV’s Ciconna, Bourée, Rondeau and Menuet and Sonata XI’s Allegro-Adagio, Aria, Adagio and Ciaconna. Schenck, however, did not forget how to compose fugal sections, as can be seen in the finale of Sonata XII. The Sonata III is the only one that does not contain a movement in dance form: this despite the fact that, in line with Corelli’s Sonate da chiesa, the last movement is in fact a gigue, although with the tempo marking of allegro.

The Rhine acts as a natural border between the Germanic part of Europe and France, although one that has been far too easy to breach. This same Rhine that passes through the Netherlands before emptying into the North Sea is also a reminder of Schenck’s native land; on the other side of the North Sea, however, are the British Isles, where Le Nymphe di Rheno would be published as Select Lessons for the Bass Viol of Two Parts some years later. Schenck’s reputation had therefore gone beyond not only the lands bordered by the Rhine but also the European continent.

Now, even though the flyleaf of Le Nymphe di Rheno provides a clear interpretation of the volume’s title, this need not prevent the listener from sinking into a gentle torpor and imagining both the languid and more urgent phrases of the Nymphs’ conversations delivered with an absolutely feminine grace and charm…

Rien que le titre de ce recueil est déjà toute une énigme. Que viennent faire ces « Nymphes du Rhin » dans une collection de douze sonates pour deux basses de viole ?

On cherchera en vain parmi tous les mouvements qui composent ces œuvres le moindre effet d’imitation du cours de l’eau ou des impressionnants paysages qui bordent le fleuve.

Pas la moindre fille du Rhin, pas la moindre Lorelei ! Comme pour toutes ses publications, Johannes Schenck se refuse à utiliser les titres habituels de Sonates, Suites, Livre de pièces de viole, etc. C’est ainsi qu’apparaissent successivement Uitgevondene tyd and konstoeffeningen (1688), Il Giardino armonico (1691), Scherzi musicali (s.d.), Le Nymphe di Rheno (1702), L’écho du Danube (1706), Les fantaisies bisarres de la goutte (s.d.), le tout édité à Amsterdam chez Estienne Roger. Dans le cas des Nymphe di Rheno, l’explication est sans doute assez simple. Le recueil est dédié à son patron et protecteur, l’Électeur palatin Johann Wilhelm, dont il énumère les titres à la page de garde de l’édition et dont le premier est justement « Conte Palatino del Rheno ». Ne cherchons pas plus loin.

Qui est Johannes Schenck, ce violiste dont les noms et prénoms changent d’orthographe en fonction sans doute des habitudes des pays visités ? Jan, Johann, Johannes, Schenk, Schenck et, dans le cas des Nymphe di Rheno, selon une habitude bien courante à l’époque, une traduction italienne : Giovanni Schenck.

On sait très peu de chose sur sa vie. Né à Amsterdam en 1660, il apparaît parmi les musiciens au service de Johann Wilhelm à Düssedorf dès 1696. On peut toutefois supposer qu’il est resté jusque-là dans sa ville natale ; sa première publication de suites pour viole de gambe et basse continue y est éditée en 1688, et en 1693 ou 1694 paraît également un recueil de pièces qui associent deux voix, deux violes et basse continue, à nouveau avec un titre en néerlandais : C. van Eekes koninklyke harpliederen. Ces 

publications au titre en néerlandais sont bien destinées au public des Pays-Bas et on peut supposer que Schenck ne songe pas à d’autres destinataires que ses compatriotes.

Ce qui nous intrigue le plus, c’est évidemment sa formation, et principalement celle de violiste. La viole de gambe jouit dans les Pays-Bas d’un succès évident. Même si le violon d’origine italienne a conquis ces régions dès le début du XVIIe siècle, comme c’est le cas en Allemagne également, la basse de viole partage avec lui les délices de la musique de chambre. L’un des premiers « violistes français » n’est-il pas le Bruxellois Nicolas Hotman (ca. 1610-1663) ? Dans le répertoire instrumental des Pays-Bas, la viole de gambe est fréquemment sollicitée par des compositeurs comme Nicolaus à Kempis ou Philippe van Wicchel. Mais c’est surtout Carolus Hacquart (1640-1701) qui est connu comme l’un des plus grands virtuoses de l’instrument. Probablement originaire de Bruges, sa carrière se poursuit à Amsterdam et à La Haye. Chelys, son recueil de pièces pour la basse de viole, est édité à La Haye en 1686. Cette année est aussi celle de la publication à Paris du Premier Livre de Pièces de Viole de Marin Marais. Comme chez son collègue français, le recueil est édité pour la viole seule. Marais fera graver le livre de basse continue en 1689 et l’éditeur Roger d’Amsterdam annonce un livre de suites avec basse continue de Hacquart en 1703 ; hélàs ! ce recueil est perdu et il est impossible de savoir si il s'agit une version avec basse continue de Chelys. Le principe des suites à la française est bien connu des compositeurs des Pays-Bas et il n’est donc pas étonnant que les deux premiers recueils de pièces de viole de Schenck soient justement constitués de suites, même si l’ordonnance et le caractère des pièces ne sont pas toujours fidèles aux modèles français. Dans les Scherzi musicali, la présence d’une Sonata, d’un Capriccio, de mouvements intitulés Alla breve ou Fuga laissent bien percevoir une influence du style italien, ou du moins de son interprétation par les musiciens allemands. Schenck aurait-il travaillé avec Hacquart ? C’est tout à fait imaginable. Aurait-il eu des contacts avec des virtuoses héritiers de la tradition anglaise de la viole de gambe ? C’est tout à fait possible 

puisque l’on sait que depuis le début du XVIIe siècle, les Pays-Bas sont le refuge de nombreux musiciens anglais qui, pour des raisons religieuses, ont fui leur pays.

Avec Le Nymphe di Rheno, notre violiste-compositeur aborde un genre totalement différent. Il est plus que probable que son arrivée au service de l’Électeur lui a permis de faire d’autres découvertes musicales et certainement de rencontrer d’autres musiciens, dont au moins un autre violiste virtuose. Car cette musique est bel et bien pensée pour deux instrumentistes d’égales valeurs. Toutes les pièces réunies dans cette anthologie sont écrites pour deux basses de viole, sans le soutien de la basse chiffrée. Aucune hiérarchie n’apparaît entre les deux instruments ; ni l’un ni l’autre ne joue le rôle d’instrument mélodique ou d’instrument d’accompagnement. Sans cesse les fonctions se croisent, d’une phrase à l’autre ; parfois, un motif mélodique est réparti de note en note entre les deux instruments. Certes, Schenck n’est pas l’inventeur de ce procédé. On le trouve par exemple dans des compositions anglaises du milieu du siècle, telles les Fantazies de Matthew Locke, ou dans les Concerts à deux violes égales de Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe.

Schenck a-t-il connaissance de ces compositions ? Ce jeu incessant des échanges de rôle entraîne des lignes instrumentales qui, avec une rapidité parfois étonnante, ne cessent de parcourir les tessitures extrêmes des violes, du grave à l’aigu. Il en résulte une surprenante alchimie sonore que les instrumentistes doivent maîtriser de façon à ce que toutes ces difficultés disparaissent, laissant aux auditeurs le charme d’une écoute qui semble couler de source.

Sources ? Les sources du Rhin ? Pourquoi pas... En tous cas, certainement celles qui ont depuis quelques décennies alimenté le répertoire allemand de la musique instrumentale qui, depuis le début du XVIIe siècle, n’a cessé de fusionner les genres de la musique française et de la musique italienne : la suite et la sonate. Une fusion qui trouvera encore son illustration dans les Sonates et Partitas pour violon de Johann Sebastian Bach.

C’est sous le titre de Sonata que sont mentionnées les douze pièces du recueil. À 

l’examen de ces pièces, on aura vite compris que Schenck réalise, sans aucune difficulté, cette synthèse des « goûts réunis » si chère à François Couperin. Ce qui était une audace pour ce Français est tout à fait naturel pour un compositeur allemand. Associer les mouvements de sonates à l’italienne avec les mouvements de danse à la française ne pose aucun problème. La forme la plus courante est celle qui commence par un ou plusieurs mouvements de sonate à l’italienne, avec parfois (comme c’est le cas de la XIIe) un mouvement qui alterne des sections assez courtes (Allegro-Adagio-AllegroAdagio). Cette introduction « italienne » est suivie de danses qui apparaissent toujours dans l’ordre classique de la suite française, à savoir : Allemande, Courante, Sarabande et Gigue, que l’auteur nomme toujours dans leurs appellations italianisées d’Allemanda, Corrente, Sarabanda, Giga. Comme cela devient la mode dans les suites françaises de la génération de Marais, il ajoute parfois quelques-unes des danses à la mode (ce que Bach nomme « galanteries ») : Gavotte, Bourrée, Menuet et même la forme typique française du Rondeau (tout cela indiqué en français, sauf les Gavottes qu’il nomme, à l’italienne, Gavotta).

Comme cela se pratique dans les Sonate da camera italiennes (par exemple celles de Corelli), certaines danses sont également dotées d’une indication agogique. Ainsi, selon les caractères du ou des mouvements d’introduction de sonates à l’italienne, l’Allemanda qui suit peut être pourvue d’une information de tempo : Adagio ou Largo.

Schenck ne pouvait pas éviter le genre, si prisé en France et tout particulièrement par les violistes, de la chaconne, qu’il nomme, à l’italienne, Ciaconna. Deux monumentales compositions du genre sont présentes dans le recueil ; l’une comme introduction à la Sonata IV, l’autre comme conclusion à la Sonata XI. Les deux Sonates qui contiennent ces Ciaconna sont d’ailleurs de formes tout à fait étranges (Ciaconna, Bourée, Rondeau, Menuet pour la Sonata IV et Allegro-Adagio, Aria, Adagio, Ciaconna pour la Sonata XI).

Fidèle à ce qu’il a déjà pratiqué dans les Scherzi musicali, Schenck n’oublie pas l’écriture 

de mouvements fugués, ce que l’on rencontre par exemple dans le finale de la Sonata XII. La Sonata III est à vrai dire la seule qui ne contienne pas de mouvement de danse ; encore que (et cela se rencontre aussi dans les Sonate da chiesa de Corelli) le mouvement final, bien qu’il soit intitulé Allegro, est, en fait, une gigue !

Le Rhin, fleuve qui sépare la partie germanique de l’Europe de la France, joue bien son rôle de frontière (que l’on franchit malgré tout assez facilement). Le Rhin, qui va se jeter dans la Mer du Nord aux Pays-Bas, rappelle le pays natal de Schenck. Et de l’autre côté de la mer se trouvent ces Îles Britanniques où, quelques années plus tard, les Nymphe di Rheno seront éditées sous le titre de Select Lessons for the Bass Viol of Two Parts ! La réputation de Schenck aura donc dépassé les frontières du Rhin et du continent.

Et maintenant, si la page de garde des Nymphe di Rheno permet de comprendre ce titre, cela n’interdit pas à l’auditeur de se laisser aller à la douce rêverie et d’imaginer les dialogues alanguis ou énergiques de ces Nymphes que l’on se représentera avec l’idée que chacun peut se faire du charme féminin…

Allein schon der Titel dieses Bandes stellt uns vor ein großes Rätsel. Was haben die „Rheinnymphen“ in einer Sammlung von zwölf Sonaten für zwei Bassgamben zu suchen?

Vergeblich hält man in allen Sätzen dieser Kompositionen nach einem, wenn auch nur geringen Nachahmungseffekt eines Wasserlaufs oder der eindrucksvollen Landschaften rund um diesen Fluss Ausschau. Nicht die geringste „Rheintochter“, nicht die geringste Loreley! Wie bei allen seinen Publikationen versagt es sich Johannes Schenck, die gebräuchlichen Titel Sonaten, Suiten, Buch der Gambenstücke usw. zu verwenden. So erscheinen bei Estienne Roger in Amsterdam nacheinander die Bände Uitgevondene tyd and konstoeffeningen (1688), Il Giardino armonico (1691), Scherzi musicali (o.D.), Le Nymphe di Rheno (1702), L’écho du Danube (1706), Les fantaisies bisarres de la goutte (o.D.). Im Fall der Nymphe de Rheno ist die Erklärung für den Titel zweifellos recht einfach. Die Sammlung ist seinem Herrn und Gönner, dem Kurfürsten von der Pfalz Johann Wilhelm I., gewidmet, dessen Titel er auf dem Vorsatzblatt der Ausgabe aufzählt. Und der erste davon lautet Conte Palatino del Rheno. Suchen wir also nicht weiter.

Wer ist Johannes Schenck, dieser Gambist, bei dem sich die Schreibweise der Familienund Vornamen wahrscheinlich je nach den Gepflogenheiten der bereisten Länder ändert?

Jan, Johann, Johannes, Schenk, Schenck, und im Fall der Nymphe di Rheno gemäß einer zu seiner Zeit sehr gängigen Sitte eine italienische Übersetzung: Giovanni Schenck. Über sein Leben weiß man nur sehr wenig. 1660 in Amsterdam geboren, taucht er ab 1696 zwischen den Musikern im Dienst Johann Wilhelms in Düsseldorf auf. Man kann allerdings annehmen, dass er bis zu diesem Datum in seiner Geburtsstadt geblieben ist. Seine erste Veröffentlichung von Suiten für Gambe und Basso continuo erscheint dort in den Jahren 1688. 1693 oder 1694 kommt – wieder unter einem niederländischen Titel – C. van Eekes 

koninklyke harpliederen heraus, auch ein Sammelband von Stücken für zwei Stimmen, nämlich zwei Gamben und Basso continuo. Publikationen mit solchen Titeln auf Niederländisch sind für ein Publikum der Niederlande bestimmt, und so kann man auch annehmen, dass Schenck dabei an keine anderen Adressaten als an seine Landsleute gedacht hat.

Was wir besonders gern wissen würden, ist selbstverständlich, welche Ausbildung er vor allem als Gambist genas. Die Gambe hatte in den Niederlanden offensichtlich großen Erfolg. Auch wenn die aus Italien kommende Violine diese Gebiete, wie es auch in Deutschland der Fall war, ab dem Beginn des 17. Jh. eroberte, teilte die Bassgambe mit ihr die Freuden der Kammermusik. War einer der ersten „französischen Gambenspieler“ nicht der Brüsseler Nicolas Hotman (ca. 1610-1663)? Im Instrumentalrepertoire de Niederlande wurde die Gambe oft von Komponisten wie Nicolaus a Kempis oder Philippe van Wicchel herangezogen. Doch vor allem Carolus Hacquart (1640-1701) war als einer der größten Virtuosen dieses Instruments bekannt. Er stammte zweifellos aus Brügge, doch seine Karriere verlief danach in Amsterdam und Den Haag. Chelys, sein Sammelband von Stücken für Bassgambe kam 1686 in Den Haag heraus. In Paris war 1686 das Erscheinungsjahr des Premier Livre des Pièces de Viole von Marin Marais. Wie bei seinem französischen Kollegen war Hacquarts Ausgabe allein der Gambe gewidmet.

Marais ließ 1689 seinen Basso-continuo-Band drucken, während der Verleger Roger aus Amsterdam Suiten mit Basso continuo von Hacquart für 1703 ankündigte. Doch leider ging dieser Band verloren, und es ist unmöglich herauszufinden, ob es sich um eine Fassung von Chelys mit Basso continuo gehandelt hat. Die Komponisten der Niederlande kannten das Prinzip der französischen Suiten gut, und daher ist es nicht erstaunlich, dass die ersten beiden Sammelbände von Schencks Gambenstücken aus Suiten bestanden, selbst wenn die Anordnung und der Charakter der Stücke nicht immer den französischen Modellen entsprechen. In den Scherzi musicali lässt das Vorhandensein einer Sonata, eines Capriccios sowie von Sätzen mit den Titeln alla breve oder Fuga deutlich den Einfluss des italieni

schen Stils erkennen oder zumindest seiner Interpretation durch deutsche Musiker. Sollte Schenck etwa mit Hacquart gearbeitet haben? Das wäre durchaus denkbar. Hatte er vielleicht Kontakte mit Virtuosen, die das Erbe der englischen Bassgambentradition weiterführten? Auch das ist gut möglich, da man weiß, dass die Niederlande seit dem Beginn des 17. Jh. eine Zufluchtsstätte für viele englische Musiker darstellten, die aus ihrem Land aufgrund ihres religiösen Bekenntnisses geflohen waren.

Mit Le Nymphe di Rheno geht unser Gambist und Komponist an eine ganz andere Gattung heran. Es ist mehr als wahrscheinlich, dass seine Ankunft im Dienst des Kurfürsten es ihm ermöglichte, neue musikalische Entdeckungen zu machen und sicher auch andere Musiker kennenzulernen, unter denen sich bestimmt auch mindestens ein anderer Gambenvirtuose befand. Denn diese Musik ist definitiv für zwei Musiker gleichen Könnens konzipiert. Alle in dieser Anthologie zusammengestellten Stücke sind für zwei Bassgamben ohne Unterstützung des bezifferten Basses geschrieben. Zwischen den beiden Instrumenten gibt es keinerlei Rangordnung; weder das eine noch das andere spielt die Rolle des Melodie- oder des Begleitinstruments. Unaufhörlich überschneiden sich diese Funktionen von einer Phrase zur anderen, und manchmal wird sogar ein melodisches Motiv von Note zu Note zwischen den beiden Instrumenten aufgeteilt. Gewiss ist Schenck nicht der Erfinder dieser Verfahrensweise, die man zum Beispiel in den englischen Kompositionen der Mitte des Jahrhunderts findet, wie etwa in den Fantazies von Matthew Locke oder in den Concerts à deux violes égales von Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe.

Kannte Schenck diese Kompositionen? Das ununterbrochene Spiel des Rollenwechsels wirkt sich auf die instrumentale Linienführung aus, die unaufhörlich die extremen Tonlagen der Gamben von den tiefen bis zu den hohen Tönen in manchmal erstaunlicher Geschwindigkeit durchläuft. Daraus ergibt sich eine seltsame Tonalchimie, die die Spieler so beherrschen müssen, dass all diese Schwierigkeiten verschwinden und den Zuhörern der Reiz eines scheinbar quellklaren Kunstgenusses vermittelt wird. 

Quellen? Die Quellen des Rheins? Warum nicht? Jedenfalls sicher jene, die seit einigen Jahrzehnten das deutsche Repertoire der Instrumentalmusik speisten, in der es seit dem Beginn des 17. Jh. unaufhörlich zur Verschmelzung der Gattungen der französischen und der italienischen Musik kam, nämlich der Suite und der Sonate. Diese Kombination wirkte noch in den Sonaten und Partiten für Violine von Johann Sebastian Bach nach.

Die zwölf Stücke des Sammelbandes tragen den Titel Sonata. Bei näherer Betrachtung versteht man schnell, dass Schenk ohne jede Schwierigkeit die Synthese der „kombinierten Geschmacksrichtungen“ gelingt, die François Couperin so am Herzen liegt. Was für diesen Franzosen als Kühnheit galt, war für einen deutschen Komponisten ganz natürlich. Die Sätze der Sonate nach italienischer Art mit Tanzsätzen à la française zu kombinieren, war dort kein Problem.

Die gängigste Form ist jene, die mit einem oder mehreren Sonatensätzen all’italiana beginnen, wobei manchmal (wie in der XII.) in einem Satz ziemlich kurze Abschnitte Allegro-Adagio-Allegro-Adagio abwechseln. Auf diese „italienische“ Einleitung folgen Tänze, die immer in der klassischen Reihenfolge der Standard-Suite à la française auftreten, d.h.: Allemande, Courante, Sarabande und Gigue, allerdings vom Komponisten immer mit ihren italianisierten Namen bezeichnet, also Allemanda, Corrente, Sarabande, Giga.

Wie es mit den französischen Suiten der Generation von Marais in Mode kommt, fügt er manchmal einige modische Tänze hinzu (was Bach „Galanterien“ nennt): Gavotte, Bourrée, Menuett und sogar die typisch französische Form des Rondos (diese Tänze werden auf Französisch angegeben mit Ausnahme der Gavotten, die er auf Italienisch „Gavotta“ nennt).

Wie es bei den italienischen Sonate da camera üblich ist (zum Beispiel bei denen Corellis), werden einige Tänze auch durch eine agogische Angabe näher bezeichnet.

So kann die Allemanda, die auf den Satz oder die Sätze der Introduktion einer Sonate all’italiana folgt, gemäß deren Charakteristika durch eine Tempoinformation als Adagio oder Largo identifiziert werden. 

Für Schenck war die in Frankreich ganz besonders von den Gambisten so hochgeschätzte Gattung der Chaconne unvermeidlich, allerdings bezeichnet er sie auf Italienisch als Ciaconna. In diesem Band gibt es zwei monumentale Kompositionen dieser Art: die eine als Introduktion der Sonata IV, die andere als Schluss der Sonata XI. Die beiden Sonaten, die diese Ciaconne enthalten, haben übrigens eine ganz eigenartige Form (Ciaconna, Bourrée, Rondeau, Menuet in der Sonata IV und Allegro-Adagio, Aria, Adagio, Ciaconna in der Sonata XI). Seiner Vorgehensweise bei den Scherzi Musicali getreu, vergisst Schenck auch nicht auf die Komposition fugierter Sätze wie etwa im Finale der Sonata XII. Die Sonata III ist ehrlich gesagt die einzige, die keinen Tanzsatz enthält; obwohl (und das ist auch in Corellis Sonate da Chiesa zu finden) der Schlusssatz zwar Allegro genannt wird, aber eigentlich eine Gigue ist!

Der Rhein, jener Fluss der den deutschen Teil Europas von Frankreich trennt, spielt seine Rolle als Grenze gut (auch wenn man sie ziemlich leicht überschreiten kann).

Der Rhein mündet in den Niederlanden in die Nordsee und erinnert Schenck an sein Geburtsland. Auf der anderen Seite des Meeres befinden sich die Britischen Inseln, wo die Nymphe di Rheno einige Jahre später unter dem Titel Select Lessons for the Bass Viol of Two Parts veröffentlicht wurden! Schencks Ruf hatte somit die Grenzen des Rheins und des Kontinents überschritten.

Wenn es auch das Vorsatzblatt der Nymphe di Rheno erlaubt, diesen Titel zu verstehen, so hindert nichts den Zuhörer daran, sich in süßen Träumen zu wiegen und sich die wehmütigen oder energischen Dialoge dieser Nymphen auszudenken, die sich jeder gemäß seiner Idee des weiblichen Charmes vorstellen kann ...
