During the summer of 1890, Brahms resolved upon a course of action that seems at first glance to be somewhat surprising. At the age of 57, he decided that neither his creative faculties nor his physical strength were what they had been, and that it was time to put aside his pen. He informed his publisher Simrock that there would be no fifth symphony – he had already used some of the themes which he had previously sketched out for it in his string quintet op. 111, and had thrown away the rest. He sorted through some older works which had never come to anything, destroying what to him seemed to be unusable, and preparing for publication what seemed worthy of keeping: the 13 Canons for women’s choir op. 113, the 51 Studies for piano, and the 49 German Folksongs – all works which had been sitting in boxes for at least fifteen years.

It seems that nothing could possibly have indicated such a radical move, as Brahms was in perfect health and radiated an infectious good humour. He was an unrepentant walker, a heavy eater and drinker, and an attentive and generous friend. His financial situation was more than assured, in that his publishers allowed him a comfortable sum for his author’s rights, which he scarcely touched, and his fees as pianist and conductor largely sufficed to fill his needs and tastes, which were typical of the old bachelor in that they were hardly sumptuous. His glory was immense: when Hans von Büllow had launched his famous slogan of the “three B’s of German music”, it was the most exaggerated compliment that could be paid to a living composer by an undisputed authority, except for his placing him before Bach and Beethoven. Brahms had also been showered with titles and decorations: several prestigious universities had granted him honorary doctorates, and the Emperor of Austria had immediately named him Commander of the Order of Leopold; Ludwig the Second of Bavaria had awarded him the Order of Maximilian at the same time as to his protégé Richard Wagner; and Brahms’ home town – since

a prophet is always without honor in his own country – finally and belatedly awarded him the freedom of the city.

It may have been that things were not as they appeared with Brahms. Perhaps he knew, or suspected, that his good health was only a mask, and perhaps he had hidden fears or depressions.

This mood was not to last long, for in the month of May 1891 in Meiningen, where von Büllow had turned the orchestra of the Ducal Court into one of the best in Europe, Brahms met the 35-year-old clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, about whom he had heard much, but whom he had never actually heard play. Mühlfeld had joined the Meiningen orchestra as a violinist at the age of 17, and six years later had risen to the post of first clarinet. When von Büllow took over the direction of the orchestra in 1880 he made Mühlfeld his first assistant with the sectional rehearsals under his charge, and he was later to declare openly that the reputation of the orchestra was largely due to the quality and the precision of his young collaborator’s work. As well as this post, Mühlfeld directed his own male-voice choir, and since 1890 had been musical director of the Court Theatre.

Brahms heard him play one of the Weber concerti and the Mozart quintet. He was fascinated, and asked for and gained Mühlfeld’s permission to watch him in rehearsal. He took numerous pages of notes on the possibilities and the difficulties of the instrument, this “Fraulein Klarinette”, which he didn’t know at all well. He had now met, like Mozart and Weber before him, his own special clarinetist.

In the course of the summer of 1891 at his retreat in Bad Ischl, and having thrown all his previous resolutions into the lake, Brahms composed with a speed unusual for him the trio op.

114 and the B minor clarinet quintet op. 115. These works were then performed for the first time in Berlin on the 1st of December that year, in the Singakademie: the quintet was played by Mühlfeld and the Joachim Quartet, and the trio by Mühlfeld, the

violoncellist Hausmann from the Joachim Quartet, and Brahms himself at the piano. The quintet was soon far ahead of the trio in popularity with music lovers, but Brahms often stated that his preference was for the trio, because he found it to be more original than the quintet in spite of its more classical appearance.

Brahms must have recovered his taste for composition, as the following year of 1892 saw the creation of a large quantity of piano music of the highest quality: the 4 Fantasias op. 116, the 3 Intermezzi op. 117, and the two volumes of Klavierstücke, op. 118 and 119. He then returned to “Fraulein Klarinette”, and wrote the two Sonatas op. 120 for a concert tour which he was planning with Mühlfeld. These sonatas were first performed in Vienna exactly three years after the trio and the quintet, on the 1st December, 1894. Brahms and Mühlfeld took the two sonatas to numerous towns in both Germany and Austria, and Brahms was so happy with their work together that he passed over to Mühlfeld not only his own fees, but also his author’s rights to the two sonatas, and this for life. At the end of the tour he also presented him the original manuscripts as a gift.

Meanwhile, Brahms was losing all his best friends one after another. In 1894 not only did the surgeon Billroth, who had often travelled with Brahms, die, but Hans von Büllow also died suddenly during a tour in Egypt, as well as the musicologist Spitta, who had been the instrument of Brahms’ rediscovery of Bach and Händel. Clara Schumann then died on May 21 1896. Less than a month later, Brahms himself fell gravely ill – the fact that his jaundice was due to cancer of the liver was kept from him. He composed the Vier ernste Gesänge op. 121, as well as the 11 Chorale Preludes for organ op. 122, in Clara’s memory. On the 3rd of April, 1897, at 8.30 am in his house in Vienna, Brahms took his leave from composition, from love, and from life.

À 57 ans, il décida que ses facultés créatives n’étaient plus ce qu’elles avaient été, ni ses forces physiques, et qu’il était temps de ranger sa plume. Il informa son éditeur (Simrock) qu’il n’y aurait pas de Cinquième Symphonie – il avait d’ailleurs utilisé quelques-uns des motifs déjà esquissés dans son Quintette à cordes op. 111, et jeté le reste. Il mit de l’ordre dans quelques anciennes partitions inabouties, détruisant ce qui lui paraissait inutilisable et préparant pour l’édition ce qui lui semblait digne d’être conservé : les treize Canons pour chœur de femmes op. 113 ; les cinquante et une Études pour piano ; les quarante-neuf Chansons populaires allemandes – toutes œuvres qui attendaient dans ses cartons depuis quinze ans, ou davantage.

Rien, en apparence, ne pouvait laisser prévoir une décision aussi radicale. Brahms manifestait une santé insolente et une bonne humeur contagieuse. C’était un marcheur impénitent, un gros mangeur, un buveur solide, un ami attentif et généreux. Sa situation financière était mieux qu’assurée : ses éditeurs lui servaient des droits d’auteur confortables, auxquels il ne touchait guère, ses cachets de pianiste et de chef d’orchestre suffisant largement à ses besoins et à ses goûts somme toute assez peu somptueux de vieux célibataire. Sa gloire était immense. Quand Hans von Bülow avait lancé son célèbre slogan des « trois B de la musique allemande », il s’agissait là, de la part d’une autorité ; incontestée, du compliment le plus hyperbolique que l’on pût adresser à un compositeur vivant, sauf à le placer devant Bach et Beethoven. Brahms était couvert de titres et de décorations.

Il était docteur honoris causa de plusieurs universités prestigieuses. L’empereur d’Autriche l’avait fait, d’emblée, Commandeur de l’Ordre de Léopold. Le roi Louis II de Bavière lui avait décerné l’Ordre de Maximilien en même temps qu’à son protégé Richard Wagner. Et

la ville natale de Brahms, bonne dernière comme il se doit, venait enfin de le nommer citoyen d’honneur.

Peut-être Brahms avait-il son jardin secret. Peut-être savait-il, ou croyait savoir, que sa santé n’était solide qu’en apparence, peut-être avait-il des motifs cachés de crainte ou de dépression. Toujours est-il que cela ne dura pas longtemps. Au mois de mai de l’année suivante (1891), il rencontra à Meiningen, où von Bülow avait fait de l’orchestre de la cour ducale l’un des premiers d’Europe, le clarinettiste Richard Mühlfeld, 35 ans, dont on lui avait souvent parlé mais qu’il n’avait jamais entendu jouer en solo. Mühlfeld était entré dans l’orchestre de Meiningen comme violoniste, à 17 ans. Six ans plus tard, il occupait le pupitre de première clarinette. Et quand von Bülow prit la direction de l’orchestre, en 1880, il fit de Mühlfeld son premier assistant, chargé des répétitions partielles. Bülow déclarait volontiers que la réputation de l’orchestre reposait largement sur la qualité et la précision du travail de son jeune collaborateur. D’autre part, Mühlfeld dirigeait aussi sa propre chorale (d’hommes) et il était, depuis 1890, directeur musical du théâtre de la cour.

Brahms l’entendit jouer un concerto de Weber et le quintette de Mozart. Il fut fasciné, demanda, et obtint, que Mühlfeld lui permît de l’observer « à l’entraînement ». Il prit de nombreuses pages de notes sur les possibilités et les difficultés de cet instrument, « Fraulein Klarinette », qu’il connaissait assez mal, après tout. Il avait, tout comme Mozart et Weber avant lui, rencontré son clarinettiste.

Au cours de l’été 1891, dans sa retraite de Bad-Ischl, ayant rejeté ses résolutions dans le lac, il composa, avec une rapidité inhabituelle, son Trio op. 114 et son Quintette avec clarinette en si mineur op. 115. Le 1er décembre, les deux œuvres étaient créées à Berlin, à la Singakademie : le quintette par Richard Mühlfeld et le quatuor Joachim ; le trio par Mühlfeld avec le violoncelliste du quatuor (Robert Hausmann) et le compositeur au piano. Le Quintette allait rapidement distancer le Trio dans la faveur des mélomanes, mais Brahms lui-même

protesta souvent que le Trio gardait sa préférence. Il le trouvait plus original sous ses apparences plus classiques…

Il devait avoir repris goût à son travail puisque l’année suivante, 1892, vit naître une grande quantité de musique de piano de tout premier ordre : les quatre Fantaisies op. 116, les trois Intermezzi op. 117, les deux recueils de Klavierstücke op. 118 et 119. Puis il revint à Fraulein Klarinette et lui consacra les deux Sonates op. 120, pour une tournée de concerts qu’il projetait avec Mühlfeld.

Les sonates furent créées à Vienne juste trois ans après le Trio et le Quintette, le 1er décembre 1894. Brahms et Mühlfeld promenèrent les deux sonates dans de nombreuses villes d’Allemagne et d’Autriche, et Brahms fut si heureux de leur travail en équipe – et si généreux ! – qu’il abandonna à Mühlfeld non seulement ses propres cachets, mais encore ses droits d’auteur sur les deux sonates, et ceci à vie, et qu’à la fin de la tournée il lui fit don des manuscrits.

Entretemps, Brahms perdait l’un après l’autre tous ses meilleurs amis. Rien qu’en 1894 moururent le chirurgien Billroth, qui l’avait souvent accompagné en voyage, puis Hans von Büllow, soudainement, au cours d’une tournée en Égypte, puis le musicologue Spitta, qui lui avait fait redécouvrir Bach et Haendel. Et puis Clara Schumann, le 21 mai 1896. Moins d’un mois plus tard, Brahms tomba vraiment malade. On lui cacha que sa jaunisse était l’effet d’un cancer du foie. Il composa encore les Vier ernste Gesänge op. 121, pour être chantés à la mémoire de Clara, et encore onze Préludes de chorals pour orgue op. 122, et cessa définitivement d’écrire, de respirer, d’aimer le 3 avril 1897, à 8 heures 30 du matin, dans sa maison de Vienne.
