Born into a well-off family, though becoming an only son after the premature death of his two younger brothers, Sergei Prokofiev revealed his gifts as a pianist, and also as a composer, at a very early age, writing his first pieces at five, two operas at eleven and a symphony at thirteen, at which age Glazunov admitted him to the Saint Petersburg Conservatorium.

The catalogue of his works – which he himself revised in 1952 – started with the Sonata No. 1, Op. 1, composed in 1909, and it rapidly filled with masterpieces (Piano Concerto No. 2, the ballet Chout, the opera The Gambler) of a modernist and provocative tendency, that was, however, attenuated by a Classical Symphony written just after the Bolshevik revolution. On 22 April 1918 the commissar for education, Anatoly Lunacharsky, appealed to Prokofiev, saying: “You are a revolutionary in music as we are in life, we must combine our efforts”. Noting the composer’s lack of enthusiasm, he grasped that, for the moment, a visa for travelling abroad was of much greater interest.

Whereas Shostakovich never left the Soviet Union, Prokofiev was an inveterate nomad, in the USA first of all (1918-1922), then in Europe (1923-1936). He lived in a vast array of different places – no fewer than twenty in France. However, unlike Stravinsky or Rachmaninov, he never became a fully-fledged emigré, as he kept in touch with the Soviet Union and avoided any political criticism of the regime. The Russian emigrés in Paris were mistrustful of an artist who had no qualms about returning to live in Russia, first in 1927 then again in 1929 (with a ballet, Le Pas d’Acier, that was seen as a paean to industrialisation), and finally for a longer stay in 1934 and 1935.

The expensive lifestyle he led in the West forced him to give many recitals and to accept all the commissions he was offered: ballets for Diaghilev, operas, concertos, sympho-

nies. From 1934 he also received commissions from Russia: Romeo and Juliette, Lieutenant Kizhe, The Queen of Spades, incidental music in collaboration with Meyerhold and Tairov. It must inevitably have delighted someone who had once declared that he missed the cold winters and the sound of the Russian language. Another sort of cold and a different kind of language awaited him on his return in 1936. He had left Russia in 1918 as a brilliant pianist of 27 who composed for his instrument. When he returned eighteen years later he was the composer of five sonatas, five concertos but also three operas, four symphonies and five ballets. Professing himself to be apolitical, Prokofiev said he was delighted to “find in Russia a government that would let him compose in peace, publish everything he wrote before the ink dried and would perform every note that came from his pen”. What happened was precisely the contrary. The regime had managed to bring back one of its most celebrated emigrés, and this, three years after recognition by the Western democracies, consolidated the prestige of the Soviet Union.

With this aim achieved, the Union of Composers, which since 1932 controlled all musical activities, made Prokofiev a good artistic worker in the service of the aesthetic of socialist realism as defined in 1934 by Maxim Gorky and Andrei Zhdanov. Most works written before his return now belonged to a lamentable “foreign period”, not to mention the pieces composed in Tsarist times, quite obviously to be condemned. The pianist Prokofiev had in consequence nothing left to play, except for his Third Concerto and a few short pieces. As for his new works, however zealously composed (Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the Revolution, Hail to Stalin), they met with no less opposition. His passport was withdrawn in 1938; then war came: of the five scores written during these years, only the Fifth Symphony entered the repertory during his lifetime. In January 1945 Prokofiev fell victim to a thrombosis from which he never completely recovered. Condemned in 1948 for formalism – just like Shostakovich, Khachaturian and even his great friend, the wise Nikolai Miaskovsky – he was the object of particularly virulent attacks orchestrated by Khrennikov, the General Secretary of the Union of Composers. By now a broken man, ill, suffering from deliberate isolation and a chronic lack of

financial income, he was even refused a complete performance of War and Peace, on which he had been working for ten years. In his final months he was spared no humiliation – the interventions of young musicians such as Mstislav Rostropovich were answered with niggardly handouts from the authorities. Prokofiev died on the same day as Stalin: the revue Sovetskaia Muzyka published a special number on the loss of “the greatest friend to musicians of all time”. The death of Prokofiev was only mentioned on page 117.

The silence inflicted by the Soviet regime on many of Prokofiev’s works did not spare the concertos. Only the third remained in the repertory, the others being all but ignored, in particular the greatest, the Second Concerto, which was the object of a veritable boycott, and remained so long after the death of Prokofiev, especially in the international piano competitions, even though Russian candidates and laureates were by no means lacking. Thus it was that at the International Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition, Prokofiev was performed 22 times, twenty of those performances being by pianists of all horizons except Russian. The Second Concerto, played seven times, enabled three first prizes to be won – the American Malcolm Frager in 1960, the LebaneseFrench Abdel Rahman El Bacha in 1978, and the German Severin von Eckardstein in 2003.

The five Piano Concertos Apart from Beethoven and Saint-Saëns, only a few composers of lesser importance wrote, in the nineteenth century, five concertos for the piano. In the twentieth century, Prokofiev’s colleagues and rivals Rachmaninov and Medtner wrote no more than four, and, remaining faithful to the previous century, they placed themselves beyond a modernity that both composers hated and actively fought against. Prokofiev, on the contrary, combined an entirely original conception of piano playing with a modern approach to the orchestra, not hesitating at times to go almost to the limit of what could be supported by audiences that had just discovered The Rite of Spring. After a performance of the First Concerto in 1918, the New York press hailed Prokofiev as “the Cossack Chopin of future generations”, while in Chicago he was seen

as “a musical representative of revolutionary Russia who flew the red flag of anarchy over a surprising cacophony”.

What are we to make today of this body of works composed between 1911 and 1932? Only the Third Concerto (1921) has without interruption formed part of the repertory. The importance of the Second (1913) was not recognised until the 1960s, when it became a star at piano competitions; the First (1912) has been very rarely played, and it was only with the first complete recordings, in 1973-1974, that the Fourth (1931) and the Fifth (1932) emerged from neglect.

Concerto No. 2 in G minor Op. 16 (1913, revised in 1923) Composed almost immediately after the opus 10, opus 16 is of quite a different scope: twice as long, it consists of four distinct movements of great melodic diversity. Prokofiev himself declared in this regard: “My music was criticised for seeking to make an effect and accumulate acrobatics, which led me to work at acquiring greater depth in the Second Concerto”. This depth was born of tragedy. At the conservatory, Prokofiev had become friends with his fellow student Maximilian Schmidthof, a brilliant intellectual who got him to read Schopenhauer and with whom he had spent a large part of his holidays between 1909 and 1912 (“He was a half of me”, Prokofiev was to write to his sister). In early May 1913 he received a note from him: “Dear Seriozha, this short note to tell you the latest. I have blown my brains out. Do not be too upset, for, in truth, it is not worth it. Farewell. The reasons for my gesture are of no importance”. Prokofiev dedicated to the memory of his friend the concerto he was just finishing (as well as two of his piano sonatas).

The first performance in Pavlovsk caused a great scandal, many listeners leaving the hall in protest.

Unhappily the manuscript was burned during the Revolution; the definitive version is a reconstruction – doubtless matured – made by Prokofiev ten years later.

The concerto starts calmly with a melodic recitative on the piano (narrating, is the indication in the score) in a rather similar way to Rachmaninov’s Third Concerto. After

an orchestral development a second figure appears, more rhythmic and with a popular feel. The return of the first theme introduces, instead of the traditional development, a gigantic cadenza on the piano which takes up almost half this first movement, and leads to a heroic paroxysm that is taken over by the orchestra. A final reference to the recitative brings back the opening poetic ‘narration’. A short, agitated Scherzo (without Trio) serves as an interlude between the first movement and the Intermezzo that, despite its title, is a fairly long movement. Instead of the customary slow movement, Prokofiev has two moto perpetuo movements, one very fast, the other emphatic and insistent. The slow sections appear simply as intermediary episodes within the first and last movements of the work. In this epic poem in music, of which the piano is the bard, virtuosity takes on a different meaning: instead of being an unleashing of fireworks to dazzle the salons, it becomes life itself, voluble and tremulous, cruel and exalted. The last movement takes a similar turn away from tradition; instead of a joyful rondo or brilliant dance, we have a whirlwind of an Allegro tempestoso that seems to sweep all before it yet which gives way progressively to a kind of lullaby, the rocking melody of which Rachmaninov would not have disowned. This alternation continues to the end of the work. Paris criticised the composer for this lyrical outpouring: snobisme oblige, the music of Prokofiev was not becoming modern enough!

Concerto No. 5 in G major Op. 55 (1932) After the rather frustrating misadventure of the Fourth Concerto, Prokofiev at once wrote another.

Ever since his opus 26, Prokofiev had been accumulating a wealth of ideas, and as he intended to compose a work with more than four movements, he even thought of calling his new concerto Music for piano and orchestra. The result was, however, a concerto, albeit one that is particularly complex, as much for the soloist as for the orchestra. Its unusual five-part form means that three lively movements frame two moderate or slow parts. The Allegro con brio is in a familiarly dynamic style, while the Moderato appears as a march friskily accompanied by a leaping piano. The central Toccata serves as a brief, bouncy interlude before a slow movement, Larghetto, that makes use of mutes. However, as is often the case with Pro-

kofiev, the piano cannot stay stil, and livelier episodes are inserted, with the result that the final Vivo follows without a break to a stirring conclusion.

Premiered in Berlin in 1932 by Prokofiev with Furtw채ngler conducting, this difficult score was but infrequently performed until Sviatoslav Richter championed it. This happened after the official, posthumous rehabilitation of Prokofiev in 1958, wiping out the condemnation for formalism of 1948. Despite these fine declarations, Richter was obliged even so to go to Warsaw to record the work in September of that same year. He recorded it a second time eleven years later, in London this time. The release of this recording was not authorised in Moscow until 1970.

Abdel Rahman El Bacha In June 1978, Abdel Rahman El Bacha won the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition in a unanimous verdict. He was also awarded the Audience Prize. He was only 19.

Born in Beeirut in 1958 into a family of musicians, and nephew of a famous painter, he started his piano schooling in 1967 with Zvart Sarkissian, a pupil of Marguerite Long and Jacques Février.

At the age of 10 he gave his first concert with orchestra. In 1973 Claudio Arrau predicted a great career for him and in 1974 he was offered scholarships by France, the former USSR and Great Britain. He took up the French offer out of cultural affinity and entered the Paris Conservatoire in the class of Pierre Sancan. He graduated with four First Prizes (piano, chamber music, harmony and counterpoint).

After the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition which launched him on the international scene, he chose to spend some time enlarging and further studying his repertoire. From that moment on, the musical press started comparing him to the greatest pianists, stressing the exceptional qualities of his playing and his emotional power. From the Salzburg Mozarteum to the Paris Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, from the Berlin Philharmonie to the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, he performs today all over Europe, in Russia, Japan, the Middle East, the USA, Central and South America.

His vast repertory, including almost 60 concertos, consists mostly of works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Rachmaninov, Ravel and Prokofiev.

He has performed under eminent conductors, and with prestigious orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the NHK Tokyo, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, among many others.

In 1983, his first recording for the label Forlane, Early Works by Prokofiev, was awarded the “Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros”. He received it from the hands of Mrs Prokofiev herself. For the same label he has recorded three Concertos by Bach, Ravel’s two Concertos and works by Schumann, Ravel and Schubert. His recording of Beethoven’s

complete Piano Sonatas, just as his concert performances of these works, were heralded by the press as a “major event”. The second CD of these Beethoven recordings, as well as his Ravel recital, was awarded the “Grand Prix de la Nouvelle Académie du Disque français”. For Chopin’s Melodies with Ewa Podlès, he also received the “Gerald Moore Prize” – best accompanist – from the Académie du Disque lyrique. He has also recorded Chopin’s complete solo piano works (12 CD’s) in chronological order.

In March 2002, he obtained a triumph in Nantes, with the complete piano solo works of Chopin given (by heart) in 16 recitals over six consecutive days. He renewed this experience at La Roque d’Anthéron Festival in 15 recitals given in July 2003, and again subsequently, at the Sintra Festival (Portugal) and in Avignon. Recently released are the two CD’s of Chopin’s complete works for piano and orchestra, recorded with the Orchestre de Bretagne, conducted by Stefan Sanderling.

Abdel Rahman El Bacha was granted double French-Lebanese citizenship in 1981. He is also a composer. On March 2002, the Orchestre régional de Cannes-Provence-Côte d’Azur performed his Deux Préludes mystiques.

He was made “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Minister of Culture in 1998, and has been awarded the Order of Merit, the highest distinction of his native country, by the President of the Republic of Lebanon.

La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra In addition to its work as an opera orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra at La Monnaie presents a series of symphonic concerts every season. In 1981, Gerard Mortier thoroughly reorganised the orchestra, and since then it has had the opportunity to prove its versatility, both on the concert stage and in the orchestra pit. Under the baton of Sir John Pritchard and later Sylvain Cambreling, the orchestra specialised in a repertoire that has provided La Monnaie with its considerable reputation: works by Mozart, Verdi, Janácek and Wagner, as well as by composers such as Hans Zender and Philippe Boesmans. When it comes to sym-

phonic works, it is mainly with the music of Mozart, Haydn, Bruckner, Mahler, Bartók, Debussy and Stravinsky that the orchestra has enjoyed exceptional success, as well as with contemporary music.

Numerous celebrated guest conductors have led the Symphony Orchestra at La Monnaie, including Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Paul Daniel, Peter Eötvös, Marcello Viotti, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Michael Gielen, Ivan Fischer, Philippe Herreweghe, Günther Herbig, Eiji Oué, Rudolf Barshaï, Libor Pesek, Dietfried Bernet, Mark Stringer, Lionel Friend, Lothar Zagrosek, Marek Janowski, Vladimir Jurowski, Olaf Henzold, Kwamé Ryan, Bertrand de Billy, Claus Peter Flor, Vladimir Jurowski, Philippe Jordan, Markus Stenz, Ivor Bolton and Daniele Callegari. The orchestra tours regularly: to Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Frankfurt (Jahrhunderthalle), Paris, Vienna, Madrid (Teatro Real), Barcelona (Liceu) and the major European festivals (Wiener Festwochen, Edinburgh Festival, the Festival de Paris and others).

In 1992 the new director of La Monnaie, Bernard Foccroulle, entrusted the leadership of the Symphony Orchestra to the young American conductor Antonio Pappano, who was also immediately appointed musical director. Pappano conducted the orchestra in the La Monnaie productions of Salome, Un Ballo in Maschera, Carmen, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Peter Grimes, La Traviata, Tristan und Isolde, Il Trittico, Carmen, Erwartung/Verklärte Nacht, Pelléas et Mélisande, Don Carlos, Ariadne auf Naxos, Otello, Parsifal, The Turn of the Screw, Le Nozze di Figaro, The Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, Der Rosenkavalier, Aida, La Damnation de Faust and the first performance of Wintermärchen. In addition to the opera repertoire, Pappano has also conducted the orchestra in performances of oratorios (Verdi’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, etc.) and the symphonic repertoire.

It was with the production of Strauss’ Elektra that Kazushi Ono took over the conductorship of the orchestra in September 2002 (followed by the first performance of Luca Francesconi’s Ballata, as well as I due Foscari, Khovanschina, Don Giovanni, Wintermärchen, Peter Grimes and Tannhäuser).

Under Sylvain Cambreling, the orchestra has recorded several works, including Mozart’s Lucio Silla and La Finta Giardiniera, Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra and Boesmans’ Reigen. More recently it recorded Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Britten’s Turn of the Screw and Massenet’s Manon under Antonio Pappano, as well as Mahler’s Second Symphony, under Kazushi Ono.

Kazushi Ono Kazushi Ono was born in Tokyo, where he later studied at the National University of Fine Arts and Music. After participating at the 1983 Tanglewood Festival under the guidance of Leonard Bernstein, Ono studied with Wolfgang Sawallisch and Giuseppe Patané at the Bayerischen Staatsoper as a scholar of the Cultural Ministry of Japan. In 1987, he won First Prize in the 3rd Toscanini International Conductors Competition.

Kazushi Ono was appointed successor to Antonio Pappano as Music Director at La Monnaie in Brussels in August 2002. He made his operatic debut there in March 2001, conducting Sciarrino’s chamber opera Luci mie traditrici to critical acclaim, and undertook a very successful tour with this production to the Lincoln Center in New York in July of that year. He was General Music Director of the Badisches State Opera in Karlsruhe from 1996 to 2002 and Principal Conductor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra from 1992 to 2001.

In March 1999 he made a highly successful debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducting Bartók and Prokofiev. The Boston Globe commented: “Ono secured superlative ensemble virtues and dramatic pacing from the players. He has the gift of bringing out the best of an orchestra…”

Later that season he also made his debut with the NDR Hamburg in a programme of works by Debussy and Takemitsu. He took over the final concert in the Orchestre philharmonique de Radio-France’s season at the Salle Pleyel in Paris with great success, which resulted in immediate re-invitations for forthcoming seasons. He has also

appeared as guest conductor with the Komische Oper Berlin, Frankfurt RSO, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre national de Lyon, Orchestre national de Bordeaux and Seattle Symphony Orchestra. He also conducted the opening concert of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra’s season in their renovated hall, and returned for another programme in March of that year. He has also conducted the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse.

He was re-invited by the BBC Symphony Orchestra for concerts at the Barbican for the following two seasons. Ono made his debut in Karlsruhe in 1994, giving performances of La Traviata and La Bohème. In recent seasons he has conducted the Ring Cycle in this theatre, with its great tradition of Wagner performance, as well as Henze’s Jungle Lord, Bellini’s Norma, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger and Lohengrin, Schreker’s Schatzgräber, Verdi’s Attila and Puccini’s Tosca. With the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Ono launched the awardwinning “Opera in Concert Form Series” project, giving the Japanese premieres of works by Zemlinsky, Hindemith and Prokofiev. He also commissioned Mark Antony Turnage’s Silent Cities and gave the Japanese premieres of Henze’s 8th and 9th Symphonies.

Né dans un milieu aisé, devenu fils unique à la suite de la mort prématurée de ses deux jeunes frères, Serge Prokofiev a très tôt révélé des dons de pianiste et même de compositeur, puisqu’il écrivit ses premières pièces à cinq ans, deux opéras à onze ans et une symphonie à treize ans, âge auquel Glazounov l’admit au Conservatoire de Saint-Pétersbourg.

Le catalogue de ses œuvres – qu’il a lui-même revu en 1952 – commence par la Sonate no 1 op. 1, composée en 1909, et s’enrichit rapidement de chefs-d’œuvre (Deuxième Concerto pour piano, le ballet Chout, l’opéra Le Joueur) à tendance moderniste et provocante, atténuée par sa Symphonie classique écrite aux lendemains de la Révolution bolchevique. Alors que Chostakovitch n’a jamais quitté la Russie, Prokofiev a au contraire été un grand nomade, aux États-Unis d’abord (1918-1922), en Europe ensuite (1923-1936). Il résida en un nombre considérable de lieux – pas moins de vingt en France. Cependant, contrairement à Stravinsky ou à Rachmaninov, il ne fut jamais un émigré à part entière, gardant des contacts avec l’Union soviétique et évitant toute déclaration politique désapprouvant le régime. Les émigrés russes de Paris se méfiaient de cet artiste qui n’hésita pas à retourner en Russie à partir de 1927, puis à nouveau en 1929 avec un ballet, Le Pas d’acier, perçu comme un éloge de l’industrialisation, enfin de plus en plus longuement en 1934 et 1935.

La vie dépensière qu’il menait en Occident l’obligea à donner nombre de récitals et à accepter les commandes qui se présentaient à lui : ballets pour Diaghilev, opéras, concertos, symphonies. À partir de 1934, des commandes lui parvinrent également de Russie : Roméo et Juliette, Lieutenant Kijé, La Dame de Pique, des musiques de scène en collaboration avec Meyerhold et Tairov. Cela devait nécessairement séduire celui qui avait déclaré un jour que le froid de l’hiver et les sonorités de la langue russe lui manquaient. Un autre froid et une autre sorte de langage l’attendaient à son retour en 1936. Il avait quitté la Russie en 1918, brillant pianiste de 27 ans qui composait en fonction de son instrument. Lorsqu’il revint dix-huit ans plus tard, il était l’auteur de cinq sonates, de cinq concertos mais aussi de trois opéras, de quatre symphonies et de cinq ballets. Se déclarant apolitique, Prokofiev se dit ravi de « trouver en Russie un gouvernement qui le laisserait composer en paix, publierait tout ce qu’il écrirait avant que l’encre ne soit sèche et ferait exécuter chaque note sortie de sa plume ». C’est exactement le contraire qui l’attendait. Le régime avait réussi à faire rentrer l’un de ses plus célèbres émigrés, ce qui, trois ans après la reconnaissance par les démocraties occidentales, consolidait le prestige de l’Union soviétique.

Ce but atteint, l’Union des compositeurs, qui depuis 1932 régissait toutes les activités musicales, devait faire de Prokofiev un bon travailleur artistique au service de l’esthétique du réalisme socialiste définie en 1934 par Maxime Gorki et Andrei Jdanov. La plupart des œuvres écrites avant son retour appartenaient désormais à une funeste « période étrangère », sans parler des pages écrites à l’époque des tsars, forcément condamnables. Le pianiste Prokofiev n’avait plus rien à jouer, à la seule exception de son Troisième Concerto et de quelques petites pièces. Quant aux œuvres nouvelles, même écrites avec zèle (Cantate pour le XXe anniversaire de la Révolution, Salut à Staline), elles ne rencontrèrent pas moins d’opposition. On lui retira son passeport en 1938, puis ce fut la guerre : des cinq partitions écrites durant ces années, seule la Cinquième Symphonie entra au répertoire de son vivant. En janvier 1945, Prokofiev fut victime d’une thrombose dont il ne se remit jamais entièrement. Condamné en 1948 pour formalisme – tout comme Chostakovitch, Khatchatourian et même son grand ami, le sage Nicolas Miaskovsky –, il fit l’objet d’at-

taques particulièrement virulentes orchestrées par Khrennikov, le secrétaire général de l’Union des compositeurs. Désormais brisé, malade, souffrant d’un isolement organisé et d’un manque chronique de revenus financiers, il se vit même refuser l’exécution intégrale de Guerre et Paix, à laquelle il avait travaillé dix ans. Ses derniers mois ne lui épargnèrent aucune humiliation – aux interventions des jeunes musiciens comme Mstislav Rostropovitch répondaient de chiches aumônes du pouvoir.

Prokofiev disparut le même jour que Staline : la revue Sovetskaïa Muzyka publia un numéro spécial sur la perte « du plus grand ami des musiciens de tous les temps ». La mort de Prokofiev n’y était évoquée qu’en 117e page.

Le silence imposé par le régime soviétique sur de nombreuses œuvres de Prokofiev n’épargna pas les concertos. Seul le Troisième Concerto resta au répertoire, les autres furent quasi ignorés, en particulier le plus grand, le Deuxième Concerto, qui fut véritablement boycotté et le resta longuement après la mort de Prokofiev, en particulier dans les concours internationaux de piano où les candidats et lauréats russes ne manquaient pourtant pas. C’est ainsi qu’au Concours international Reine Élisabeth de Belgique, Prokofiev fut joué vingt-deux fois, dont vingt par des pianistes de tous les horizons, sauf des Russes. Le Deuxième Concerto, joué sept fois, permit de gagner trois premiers prix – à l’Américain Malcolm Frager en 1960, au Libanais-Français Abdel Rahman El Bacha en 1978 et à l’Allemand Severin von Eckardstein en 2003.

Les cinq concertos pour piano Hormis Beethoven et Saint-Saëns, seuls quelques compositeurs de moindre importance ont écrit, au XIXe siècle, cinq concertos pour piano. Au XXe siècle, les collègues et concurrents célèbres de Prokofiev, Rachmaninov et Medtner, n’en écriront pas plus de quatre qui, restant fidèles au XIXe siècle, se situent en deçà d’une modernité que les deux compositeurs détestaient et combattaient activement.

Au contraire, Prokofiev allie une conception entièrement originale du jeu pianistique à une approche moderne du rôle de l’orchestre, n’hésitant pas à friser parfois les limites de ce que pouvaient supporter des oreilles qui venaient de découvrir Le Sacre du printemps.

Après une audition du Premier Concerto en 1918, la presse new-yorkaise salua Proko-

fiev comme « le Chopin cosaque des générations futures », tandis qu’à Chicago on voyait en lui « un représentant musical de la Russie révolutionnaire faisant flotter le drapeau rouge de l’anarchie audessus d’une surprenante cacophonie ».

Qu’en est-il aujourd’hui de ce corpus composé entre 1911 et 1932 ? Seul le Troisième Concerto (1921) a fait partie du répertoire sans interruption. On n’a reconnu l’importance du Deuxième Concerto (1913) qu’à partir des années 1960, quand il est devenu une vedette des concours de piano ; le Premier Concerto (1912) n’a été joué que très exceptionnellement, et l’on a dû attendre les premiers enregistrements intégraux, vers 1973-1974, pour que les Quatrième (1931) et Cinquième (1932) Concertos sortent de l’oubli.

Concerto no 2 en sol mineur op. 16 (1913, révision 1923) Composé presque aussitôt après l’opus 10, l’opus 16 est d’une tout autre ampleur : deux fois plus long, il comporte quatre mouvements distincts reposant sur une grande diversité mélodique. Prokofiev lui-même a déclaré à son sujet : « On a reproché à ma musique de rechercher l’effet et de multiplier les acrobaties, ce qui m’a conduit à lutter pour acquérir une plus grande profondeur dans le Deuxième Concerto. » Cette profondeur est enfantée par une tragédie. Au Conservatoire, Prokofiev s’était lié d’amitié avec un condisciple, Maximilian Schmidthof, un intellectuel brillant qui lui faisait lire Schopenhauer et avec qui il avait passé une grande partie de ses vacances entre 1909 et 1912 (« Il était une moitié de moi », écrira Prokofiev à sa sœur). Au début du mois de mai 1913, il reçut un billet de sa part : « Cher Serioja, ce court billet pour t’annoncer la dernière nouvelle. Je me suis tiré une balle dans la tête. Ne sois pas trop bouleversé car, en vérité, cela n’en vaut pas la peine. Adieu. Les raisons de mon geste sont sans importance. » Prokofiev dédia à la mémoire de son ami le concerto qu’il était en train d’achever (ainsi que deux de ses sonates pour piano).

La création à Pavlosk suscita un grand scandale, beaucoup d’auditeurs quittant la salle en protestant.

Malheureusement, le manuscrit a brûlé durant la Révolution ; la version définitive est une reconstruction – certainement mûrie – faite par Prokofiev dix ans plus tard.

Le concerto débute calmement au piano par un récitatif mélodique (narrante, indique la partition) d’une façon assez analogue au Troisième Concerto de Rachmaninov. Après un élargissement orchestral apparaît un second motif, plus rythmique et d’allure populaire. Le retour du premier thème introduit, à la place du développement traditionnel, une gigantesque cadence du piano qui occupe presque la moitié de ce premier mouvement et conduit à un paroxysme héroïque que l’orchestre reprend à son compte. Un dernier rappel du récitatif ramène la narration poétique du début. Un bref et trépidant Scherzo (sans Trio) sert d’interlude entre le mouvement initial et l’Intermezzo, qui, malgré son titre, est un mouvement assez long. Là où se situe habituellement le mouvement lent, Prokofiev a placé deux mouvements perpétuels, l’un très rapide, l’autre martelé et obstiné. Les parties lentes apparaissent seulement en guise d’épisodes intermédiaires dans les premier et dernier mouvements de l’œuvre. Dans cette épopée symphonique dont le piano est le barde, la virtuosité a changé de sens : au lieu d’être un déferlement d’artifices destiné à éblouir les salons, elle est la vie même, volubile et trépidante, cruelle et exaltée. Le dernier mouvement s’écarte lui aussi de la tradition ; au lieu d’un rondo joyeux ou d’une danse brillante, c’est un tourbillon Allegro tempestoso qui semble tout emporter mais cède progressivement la place à une manière de berceuse dont Rachmaninov n’aurait pas désavoué le mélodieux balancement. Une telle alternance se poursuivra jusqu’à la fin de l’œuvre. Paris reprochera d’ailleurs au compositeur cette effusion mélodique : snobisme oblige, la musique de Prokofiev devenait trop peu moderne…

Concerto no 5 en sol majeur op. 55 (1932) Après la mésaventure assez frustrante du Quatrième Concerto, Prokofiev en écrivit aussitôt un autre. Depuis l’opus 26, Prokofiev avait accumulé beaucoup d’idées, et comme il prévoyait de composer une œuvre de plus de quatre mouvements, il songea même à

appeler son nouveau concerto Musique pour piano et orchestre. Le résultat final est cependant un concerto, particulièrement complexe tant pour le pianiste que pour l’orchestre. Sa forme inusitée en cinq parties permet à trois mouvements animés d’encadrer deux parties modérées ou lentes. L’Allegro con brio présente un style dynamique devenu familier, tandis que le Moderato apparaît comme une marche que le piano accompagne en gambadant. La Toccata centrale sert de bref interlude sautillant avant un mouvement lent, Larghetto, qui recourt aux sourdines. Mais, comme souvent chez Prokofiev, le piano ne peut rester tranquille et des épisodes plus vifs viennent s’y insérer, de sorte que le Vivo final s’enchaîne naturellement pour s’exalter jusqu’à la fin.

Créée à Berlin en 1932 par Prokofiev avec Furtwängler au pupitre, cette partition difficile n’a connu qu’un nombre restreint d’exécutions jusqu’à ce que Sviatoslav Richter ne s’en fasse le défenseur. Cela se passait après la réhabilitation officielle posthume de Prokofiev en 1958, effaçant la condamnation pour formalisme de 1948. Malgré ces belles déclarations, Richter dut tout de même se rendre à Varsovie pour enregistrer l’œuvre en septembre de la même année. Il l’enregistra une seconde fois, onze ans plus tard, mais à Londres cette fois. La publication d’un tel enregistrement ne fut autorisée à Moscou qu’en 1970.

Abdel Rahman El Bacha Né à Beyrouth en 1958 dans une famille de musiciens, Abdel Rahman El Bacha commence ses études de piano en 1967. À dix ans, il donne son premier concert avec orchestre.

En 1974, la France, l’ex-URSS et l’Angleterre lui offrent une bourse d’études. Il entre ainsi au Conservatoire national de Musique de Paris, où il obtient quatre premiers prix : piano, musique de chambre, harmonie et contrepoint. En 1978, le jeune pianiste remporte le premier prix du prestigieux Concours international Reine Élisabeth de Belgique à l’unanimité, ainsi que le Prix du Public. Il a 19 ans et demi.

Du Mozarteum de Salzbourg au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées à Paris, du Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam à la Herkulessaal de Munich, il se produit en Europe, en URSS, au Japon, en Amérique du Nord, centrale et du Sud et au Moyen-Orient.

Son vaste répertoire, riche d’une soixantaine de concertos, inclut principalement des œuvres de Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Rachmaninov, Ravel et Prokofiev.

Il travaille sous la direction de très grands chefs et côtoie de prestigieux orchestres tels que l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin, le Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, l’Orchestre de Paris, l’Orchestre national de France, le NHK Tokyo, l’Orchestre de la Suisse romande… Des mains de Mme Serge Prokofiev, il reçoit, en 1983, le Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros, pour son enregistrement des premières œuvres pour piano de Prokofiev.

Il a également gravé trois concertos de Bach, les deux concertos de Ravel et des œuvres de Schumann, Ravel et Schubert. L’intégrale des trente-deux sonates de Beethoven, saluée par la presse, lui vaut un immense succès, tant au disque qu’en concert. Le deuxième CD de cette intégrale, de même que son récital Ravel, ont été couronnés par le Grand Prix de la Nouvelle Académie du Disque français. En 2000, il reçoit par ailleurs le Prix Gerald Moore du meilleur accompagnateur, décerné par l’Académie du Disque lyrique, pour le CD des Mélodies de Chopin chantées par Ewa Podlès.

De Chopin, il a récemment gravé toute l’œuvre pour piano seul, y compris l’œuvre pour piano et orchestre avec l’Orchestre de Bretagne dirigé par Stefan Sanderling. En mars 2002, il remporte un succès triomphal à Nantes avec cette intégrale donnée de mémoire, en ordre chronologique, en six jours consécutifs. Il a réitéré l’expérience dans le cadre du Festival de La Roque d’Anthéron en juillet 2003 et à l’opéra d’Avignon en septembre-octobre 2004.

Abdel Rahman El Bacha est également compositeur. Le 22 mars 2002, l’Orchestre régional de Cannes-Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur a créé ses Deux préludes mystiques.

En 1998, le ministre français de la Culture lui a décerné le titre de Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres et, en 2002, le Président de la République libanaise lui a remis la Médaille de l’Ordre du Mérite, la plus haute décoration de son pays natal.

L’Orchestre symphonique de la Monnaie Parallèlement à ses activités d’orchestre d’opéra, l’Orchestre symphonique de la Monnaie propose chaque saison une programmation symphonique. L’orchestre, transformé profondément par Gerard Mortier en 1981, a montré à maintes reprises sa polyvalence tant sur scène que dans la fosse.

Sous la direction musicale de Sir John Pritchard d’abord, puis de Sylvain Cambreling, l’orchestre s’est spécialisé dans un répertoire qui a fait la renommée de la Monnaie : œuvres de Mozart, Verdi, Janácek, Wagner et de compositeurs contemporains tels que Hans Zender et Philippe Boesmans.

Dans le domaine symphonique, Mozart, Haydn, Bruckner, Mahler, Bartók, Debussy et Stravinsky ont bénéficié d’une attention particulière, de même que le répertoire contemporain.

L’Orchestre symphonique de la Monnaie accueille régulièrement des chefs de réputation internationale, notamment Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Paul Daniel, Marcello Viotti, Peter Eötvös, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Michael Gielen, Ivan Fischer, Philippe Herreweghe, Günther Herbig, Eiji Oué, Rudolf Barshaï, Libor Pesek, Dietfried Bernet, Mark Stringer, Lionel Friend, Lothar Zagrosek, Marek Janowski, Olaf Henzold, Kwamé Ryan, Bertrand de Billy, Claus Peter Flor, Vladimir Jurowski, Philippe Jordan, Markus Stenz,

Ivor Bolton, Daniele Callegari… L’Orchestre se produit régulièrement en tournées : à Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), à Francfort (Jahrhunderthalle), à Paris, à Vienne, à Madrid (Teatro Real), à Barcelone (Liceu)... et au sein des grands festivals européens (Wiener Festwochen, Festival d’Édimbourg, Festival estival de Paris...).

En 1992, c’est au jeune chef américain Antonio Pappano que le nouveau directeur de la Monnaie Bernard Foccroulle confie la direction musicale de l’Orchestre symphonique. Depuis, Antonio Pappano l’a dirigé dans Salome, Un Ballo in maschera, Carmen, Tristan und Isolde, Il Trittico, Carmen, Peter Grimes, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, La Traviata, Erwartung/Verklärte Nacht, Pelléas et Mélisande, Don Carlos, Ariadne auf Naxos, Otello, Parsifal, The Turn of the Screw, Le Nozze di Figaro, Lady Macbeth de Mzensk, Der Rosenkavalier, Aïda, La Damnation de Faust et la création mondiale de Wintermärchen notamment. Parallèlement aux productions d’opéra, Antonio Pappano a également dirigé des oratorios (Requiem de Verdi, Elias de Mendelssohn...) et le répertoire symphonique.

C’est avec la production d’Elektra de Strauss que Kazushi Ono a pris la direction musicale de la Monnaie en septembre 2002 (suivi de la création mondiale de Ballata de Luca Francesconi, I due Foscari, Khovanchtchina, Don Giovanni…)

L’Orchestre symphonique de la Monnaie a enregistré plusieurs disques sous la direction de Sylvain Cambreling, dont Lucio Silla et La Finta Giardiniera de Mozart, Les Contes d’Hoffmann d’Offenbach, Simon Boccanegra de Verdi et Reigen de Boesmans. Plus récemment, il a enregistré l’oratorio Elias (Mendelssohn), The Turn of the Screw (Britten) et Manon (Massenet), sous la direction d’Antonio Pappano. C’est sous la direction de Kazushi Ono que la Deuxième Symphonie de Mahler est venue compléter ce répertoire discographique.

Kazushi Ono C’est avec Elektra de Richard Strauss que Kazushi Ono a inauguré en 2002 sa première saison comme directeur musical de l’Opéra royal de la Monnaie à Bruxelles, pour lequel il a déjà dirigé Luci mie traditrici de Salvatore Sciarrino (également en tournée au Lincoln Center de New York), la création mondiale de l’opéra Ballata de Luca Francesconi, I due Foscari, Khovanchtchina, Wintermärchen de Philippe Boesmans (au Liceu de Barcelone), Don Giovanni, Peter Grimes et récemment Tannhäuser. En septembre 2004, il dirige la création de Hanjo, opéra de Toshio Hosokawa, à la tête de l’Orchestre de chambre de la Monnaie. En concert, il s’est également taillé un franc succès au pupitre de l’Orchestre dans les Symphonies no 2 et 7 de Mahler et dans le Requiem de Berlioz. Un enregistrement de la Symphonie no 2 de Mahler est paru récemment.

Kazushi Ono est aussi sollicité par nombre d’autres orchestres. En mars 1999, ses débuts à la direction de l’Orchestre symphonique de Boston, dans des pages de Bartók et de Prokofiev, lui ont valu de ferventes ovations. Il a dirigé les orchestres de la NDR de Hambourg et de l’Opéra-Comique de Berlin, les orchestres symphoniques des radios de Francfort et de Stuttgart, le Scottish Chamber Orchestra, les orchestres nationaux de Lyon et de Bordeaux. Le public a salué dans l’enthousiasme ses débuts à la tête des orchestres des radios nationales du Danemark et de Finlande, de l’Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio-France, des orchestres symphoniques de Seattle et de Göteborg, des orchestres philharmoniques de la BBC et de Stockholm. En novembre 2001, il a assuré au pied levé la reprise de Salomé au Staatsoper de Berlin, et en janvier 2002, il remplaçait Wolfgang Sawallisch à la tête de l’Orchestre philharmonique d’Israël (dans des pages de Stravinsky, de Franck…). En 2002 également, il faisait ses débuts au Barbican de Londres avec l’Orchestre symphonique de la BBC. D’autres engagements incluent des concerts avec les orchestres du Deutsche Oper de Berlin, du Gewandhaus de Leipzig, de la WDR de Cologne, de la SWR de Fribourg, de l’Opéra de Bologne, de la RAI de Turin, le BBC National Orchestra of Wales, le City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, le Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, l’Orchestre national de

Bordeaux, l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio-France, l’Orchestre symphonique de la NHK (Japon) et l’Orchestre symphonique de la radio viennoise au Musikverein.

Sur la scène lyrique, Kazushi Ono a dirigé la plupart des opéras de Wagner, notamment le cycle complet du Ring au Badisches Staatstheater de Karlsruhe, où il a été directeur musical de 1996 à 2002. En plus des répertoires classiques et romantiques, il s’attache à faire revivre des œuvres moins connues, notamment des pièces de jeunesse de Verdi, de Schreker et de Henze.

En 2005, il dirige Die Bassariden de Henze au Théâtre du Châtelet. Ses lectures d’œuvres de Messiaen, Ligeti, Rihm, Kagel, Sciarrino, Gubaidulina, Schnittke, Takemitsu, Hosokawa et Adams lui ont valu une solide réputation dans l’interprétation du répertoire contemporain. Il signe notamment la création française de Styx de Kancheli, la première suédoise de la Symphonie no 6 de Per Nørgärd avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Göteborg et une représentation de Star Child de George Crumb à Londres. Avec l’Orchestre philharmonique de Tokyo – où il a été chef d’orchestre principal de 1992 à 1999 –, il développe le projet « Opera in Concert Form Series », qui aboutit notamment aux créations japonaises d’œuvres de Zemlinsky, Hindemith, Prokofiev, R. Strauss, Schreker et Henze. Il commande à Mark Anthony Turnage Silent Cities, à Wolfgang Rihm Spiegel und Fluß et dirige la création japonaise du Requiem der Versöhnung (écrit par treize compositeurs dont Rihm, 1995). Il a récemment dirigé l’Ensemble Intercontemporain.

Kazushi Ono a fait ses études musicales dans la section Musique et Beaux-Arts de l’Université nationale de Tokyo, sa ville natale. Il bénéficie ensuite des conseils de Leonard Bernstein au Festival de Tanglewood en 1983, puis, grâce à une bourse du Ministère japonais de la Culture, il étudie auprès de Wolfgang Sawallisch et de Giuseppe Patané au Staatsoper de Munich. En 1987, il a remporté le Premier Prix du Concours international Toscanini pour la direction d’orchestre ; juste après ce concours, en 1988, il était nommé directeur musical de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Zagreb, qu’il a dirigé jusqu’en 1996.
