As for the Italians, they represent the passions and the affections of the soul and the spirit with a violence so peculiar that one would almost believe that they experienced the very affections they represent in their singing; we French, on the other hand, merely flatter the ear [...].

Marin Mersenne, Harmonie Universelle, 1635 Time preserves little, and sometimes nothing at all, of lives that are spent, of beings whose whole existence was devoted to music. All too vainly, perhaps, we musicians or music historians question that irony of fate, and seek meaning in the footprints of those who went before. “They are the tracks of early life and I know of nothing more moving for man than to discover them”, wrote Elie Faure at the beginning of this century. Sometimes we may nurture the hope of understanding the man who composed a work, and even the intimacy of the creation of that work, simply through its contemplation.

Domenico Belli was born – date unknown – in Florence, where he apparently spent the whole of his career, and died there in May 1627. Engaged at the Florentine court by Cosimo II de’ Medici from September 1618 onwards, he took part, with Emilio de Cavalieri, Marco di Gagliano, Giulio and Francesca Caccini, Jacopo Peri and Francesco Allegri, in that immense adventure: the birth of accompanied monody, which later would lead to opera.

Lavish productions were extremely popular among the Florentine aristocracy at that time: pastorales and intermezzos were constantly performed at the Uffizi, the Palazzo

della Gherardfesca and the Pitti Palace. The appearance of accompanied monody led to the advent of new instruments: the traditional lutes, harps and consorts of viols1 which usually accompanied the voice were joined by the lirone, theorbo and Spanish (or Baroque) guitar2. In a letter dated 10 March 1618, Giulio Caccini describes Domenico Belli as a past master in the art of composition and accompaniment: “[...] there is so much variety in his invention and in the sweetness of his harmony, always accompanied by a great many instruments, that, truly, Signor Domenico Belli may glory in having borne the art of accompanied music to great heights.”

On several occasions Belli took part in those splendid court entertainments: in 1618, for example, his “favola marittima” Andromedea (music now lost) was performed at the residence of the Rinaldi family. Such spectacles, comprising a mixture of theatre and musical intermezzos, often included music by Lorenzo Allegri (c. 1573-1648). His Balli3, or dance suites (which inspired another Florentine, the young Lully, and foreshadowed the French overtures he was to compose in his country of adoption), were performed throughout the first part of the seventeenth century.

Allegri’s suites are presented here either for a large ensemble (up to six viols and continuo) or for two upper voices and continuo, as recommended by the author in his preface.

It was quite natural that the Aria di Fiorenza, which was, as it were, the emblematic hymn of Florence, should be included as a prelude to this recording. As the final ballet of the intermezzos of 1589, it met with such enthusiasm that we now count no fewer than a hundred and twenty-eight versions of this theme, also known as Ballo del Gran Ducca. We have chosen to record the version with variations by Giovanni Battista Buonamente (b. late 16th century – d. 1642) which appeared in Il quarto libro de varie sonate, published in Venice in 1626.

Most of Belli’s music, however, was composed well before his engagement by Cosimo II de’ Medici. In his three surviving works – and Officiorum defunctorum, Il primo libro dell’arie and Orfeo dolente4, all of them published in 1616 – he stands out clearly

from the other musicians employed at that time at the Florentine court. In these pieces, we get the impression of a sombre and extravagant musician, who was deeply overcome by grievous feelings of suffering and death. Bound to the aesthetic values of the Florentine Camerata, he, too – with Galilei, Cavalieri, Peri and Caccini – sought to recreate the musical world of antiquity; but while Caccini charms us with the grace of his subject, while Peri manages to capture the nobility of the spoken language of early times (“which we call diastematic, that is to say restrained and elevated”5 with simple, homophonic harmony, Domenico Belli focusses on the tragic element. Belli burns with passion, Belli brings out the dramatic qualities, Belli conveys in his compositions a sort of violent intoxication unhindered by technical impediments: expression is more important to him than the beauty of the singing, the word is more important than the vocal line.

He is a colourist, and he liberally fills his brush with all the shades that express sorrow. The sorrow of death, an obsessive fear of death: the poems he sets to music are anguished reflections on the human condition. Thus, in Apre l’huomo infelice: “From the cradle to the grave is but a short step”; in Qui fra mille trofei: “Here amidst a thousand trophies, a thousand palms, / She departs victorious on this, the saddest of days: / O wretched death!”; in Anima obime: “Scarce do I look back to times past / Than already the first bright rays / Of this horrid day are dawning in the east.”

And this leitmotiv of grief and sorrow is to be found not only in Il primo libro dell’arie, but also in Belli’s Officiorum defunctorum (probably composed for the Compagnia dell’archangelo Raffaello) and in Orfeo dolente, which, unlike other such pieces composed at that time (notably by Monteverdi), consists of one long, tortured lament sung by Orpheus, while Eurydice does not appear in the piece at all.

Domenico Belli was concerned to the highest degree with the expression of human passions (in this he came very close to the true ideals of antiquity) and where musical license is concerned no means were eschewed in the attainment of his goal, as these madrigals show: he blithely superposes a major third on a minor chord to represent

the word “morte” in Qui fra mille trofei; he associates chromaticism and dissonance without any preparation; and we find him juxtaposing extraordinary harmonies (linking of major conjunct chords in the last part of Ardo6, or independently of the upper part), giving the continuo a structure that is quite disconcerting in its complexity and freedom. History has allowed few of his works to survive to this day, but those few works show Domenico Belli as the most amazing and most radical of his contemporary Florentine monodists.

Vincent Dumestre Translation: Mary Pardoe In 1614 Marsolo reworked ten songs by Caccini for four voices (Secondo libro de’madrigali), and the latter, in the performance of Il Carro della Notte given on 14 October 1579, was accompanied by “molte viole” and “due tamburini”. Vincenzo Galilei gave his Lamento, based on Canto XXXIII of Dante’s Inferno, to accompaniment from a consort of viols. As for Jacopo Peri, in his publication of 1591, he put forward the consort of viols as an alternative to the chitarrone in accompanying the voice. For some of the pieces on this recording, we have opted for the consort of viols as accompaniment.

Marin Mersenne, Harmonie Universelle, 1635 Des vies passées, des êtres dont l’existence fut entièrement vouée à la musique, le temps conserve peu, parfois rien. C’est cette cruelle ironie du destin que, bien vainement peut-être, musiciens ou historiens de la musique, nous interrogeons, cherchant à donner un sens aux empreintes de ceux qui nous précédèrent. « Ce sont des traces de vie ancienne, et je ne sais rien de plus émouvant pour l’homme que de les découvrir », écrivait au début de notre siècle Elie Faure. C’est quelquefois par le seul regard d’une œuvre que l’on peut espérer comprendre l’homme qui en fut l’auteur, et l’intimité de la création elle-même.

Domenico Belli était florentin. Il semble qu’il ne travailla jamais en dehors de Florence, où il mourut en mai 1627. Engagé par Cosimo II de Médicis à la cour de Florence à partir de septembre 1618, il participa, avec Emilio de Cavalieri, Marco di Gagliano, Giulio et Francesca Caccini, Jacopo Peri, Francesco Allegri, à l’immense aventure que fut la naissance de la monodie accompagnée, qui devait conduire à l’opéra.

L’engouement florentin pour les fastueuses productions fut immense : pastorales, intermèdes se succédèrent sans relâche au palais des Uffizi, au palazzo della Gherardfesca, au palais Pitti. L’apparition de la monodie accompagnée entraîna celle de nouveaux instruments : aux traditionnels luths, harpes ou consorts de violes1 qui accompagnaient la voix vinrent s’ajouter le lirone, le théorbe, la guitare espagnole2. Dans une lettre du 10 mars 1618, Giulio Caccini explique comment Dome-nico Belli était passé maître dans l’art de composer et d’accompagner : « Il y a tellement de variété dans l’invention et dans la suavité de l’harmonie toujours accompagnée d’un grand nombre d’ins-truments, que véritablement, Monsieur Domenico Belli peut se glorifier d’avoir porté haut l’art de la musique accompagnée ». Belli participa plusieurs fois aux fastes de la cour, notamment en faisant jouer, en 1618, son œuvre L’Andromedea, favola marittima (aujourd’hui perdue) dans le palais des Rinaldi. À ces spectacles, où se mêlaient théâtre et intermèdes musicaux, venait souvent s’ajouter la musique de Lorenzo Allegri (1573-1648). Ses Balli3, composés de suites de danses, qui inspirèrent au jeune Lully encore florentin ce qui devait devenir ses ouvertures à la française, furent joués pendant toute la première partie du XVIIe siècle. Les suites d’Allegri sont enregistrées ici soit en grand effectif (jusqu’à six violes et basse continue), soit à deux dessus et basse continue, comme le recommande l’auteur dans sa préface.

L’Aria di Fiorenza, qui fut en quelque sorte l’hymne emblématique de Florence, prend naturellement sa place en prélude à cet enregistrement. Ballet final des intermèdes de 1589, il fut si apprécié que l’on ne compte pas moins de 128 versions de ce thème, que l’on appelait aussi Ballo del Gran Ducca. Nous avons enregistré cette pièce dans les variations qu’en écrivit Giovanni Battista Buonamente (?-1642) dans Il quarto libro de varie sonate publié à Venise en 1626.

Cependant, l’essentiel de la musique de Belli fut composé bien avant qu’il soit engagé par Cosimo II de Médicis, et dans les trois œuvres qu’il nous a laissées, il se distingue nettement de ses collègues employés par la cour florentine. Dans ses pièces, qui toutes furent publiées en 1616 (un Officiorum defunctorum, le Primo libro dell’arie et l’Orfeo

dolente4), on pressent un musicien sombre et extravagant, profondément envahi par le douloureux sentiment de la mort, de la souffrance. Attaché aux valeurs esthétiques de la Camerata florentine, il chercha, lui aussi, avec Galilei, Cavalieri, Peri et Caccini, à recréer l’univers des musiques de l’Antiquité. Mais là où Caccini charme par la grâce de son propos, là où Peri retrouve la noblesse du parler antique (« que l’on nomme diastématique, c’est-à-dire retenu et soutenu5 ») dans une harmonie simple et homophonique, Belli, lui, exprime le Tragique. Belli brûle, Belli énonce le drame, Belli traduit dans ses compositions une sorte d’ivresse violente qu’aucun obstacle technique n’entrave : il se soucie moins de la beauté du chant que de son expression, moins de la ligne vocale que du mot. Il est coloriste, et trempe son pinceau dans l’expression de la douleur. Douleur de la mort, hantise de la mort : les poèmes qu’il met en musique apparaissent comme des réflexions angoissées sur la condition humaine. Ainsi dans Apre l’huomo infelice : « Du berceau à la tombe il n’est qu’un bref passage », dans Qui fra mille trofei : « Parmi les trophées et les palmes ici-bas / elle s’en va, victorieuse au plus funeste jour / l’horrible mort » ; dans Anima ohime : « À peine me retournéje sur ce temps qui passe / que de ce jour horrible déjà / resplendissent les premiers rayons ».

Et ce leitmotiv de la douleur n’est pas réservé au Primo libro dell’arie, mais apparaît également dans son Office des morts (qui fut probablement composé pour la Compagnia dell’archangelo Raffaello), et aussi dans son Orfeo dolente qui, à la différence de ceux qui furent composés à la même époque (notamment par Monteverdi), n’est qu’une seule et longue lamentation d’Orphée, dont Eurydice est totalement absente, et qui met en scène cette seule plainte, d’une douleur immuable tout au long de l’œuvre.

Soucieux au plus haut point de l’expression des passions humaines – et, en cela, approchant au plus près les véritables idéaux de l’Antiquité –, Domenico Belli, dans ses madrigaux, s’autorise toutes les licences musicales afin d’atteindre son but : il n’hésite pas, dans Qui fra mille trofei, à superposer une tierce majeure sur un accord mineur pour représenter le mot « morte ». À lier chromatismes et dissonances sans aucune préparation.

À juxtaposer des harmonies inouïes (enchaînements d’accords conjoints majeurs dans la dernière partie d’Ardo6). À donner au schéma de la basse continue, indépendamment de la partie de dessus, une complexité et une liberté troublantes : ainsi, à travers les quelques œuvres que l’histoire nous a laissées, Domenico Belli semble avoir été le monodiste florentin le plus étonnant et le plus radical de son temps.

Vincent Dumestre Marsolo, en 1614, arrangea à quatre parties les pièces de Caccini et celui-ci, dans le Carro della Notte, le 14 octobre 1579, était accompagné de « molte viole » et « due tamburini ». Vincenzo Galilei donna son Lamento tiré du Chant XXXIII de L’inferno de Dante accompagné par un ensemble de violes. Quant à Jacopo Peri, il propose dans son édition de 1591 le consort de violes comme alternative au chitarrone pour l’accompagnement de la voix. Pour certaines pièces de ce disque, nous avons opté pour l’accompagnement avec un consort de violes.
