‘Let us imagine. Historians are obliged to do that all the time. Their role is to collect vestiges, traces of the past […]. But those traces are scant and discontinuous. We may use them to build a basic structure, but a very frail one. Between the few struts there remains gaping uncertainty.’

The French historian Georges Duby was referring in those lines to our knowledge of the Middle Ages. In later times the traces are more numerous, continuous and reliable. And since imagining (fantasieren) is the key to German Romanticism, and to Robert Schumann, let us do likewise – imagine – but without losing sight of fact and truth.

The Schumanns, Robert and Clara, formed a legendary partnership, unique in Western art. It may seem unusual, in a presentation of works by Robert Schumann, to concentrate on the relationship between the composer and the woman he loved. But was that not his desire? ‘Posterity must see us as one heart and one soul’, he wrote. His love for Clara runs like a thread through his existence as a man, his creativity as an artist and his spiritual development. He admired the prodigious pianist and composer, set his heart on winning her love, overcame adversities to marry her, gave her eight children, and died in her arms.

In March 1828, at the age of seventeen, Robert Schumann left his native Zwickau in Saxony to study law in Leipzig. There at a private concert he first set eyes on the angelic Clara. ‘Ein Engelskind’ was his description of the eight-year-old virtuoso who, silent and concentrated, revealed to him a heavenly world. From that moment on his greatest wish – although he was a musician at heart, and had as yet received no academic training – was to obtain tuition from Friedrich Wieck, her father, and put down roots in the Wieck family home.

Destined to recognise each other, like Wagnerian heroes, and to unite their characters in one being, Clara and Robert were very alike: both were fair with pale blue eyes, both had the lost look of introverted artists. As a small child Clara had been taken away from her mother, and her father had subjected her to a very strict upbringing. She had reacted to the trauma by withdrawing into silence, from which she was just beginning to emerge when Robert heard her play in Leipzig. He was a very imaginative and witty young man, who was to introduce her to the world of ideas. But he was also taciturn. Following the death of his father, a man of great erudition whom he worshipped, and his sister’s subsequent suicide, he had taken refuge in his inner world. But his creative powers remained intact. Wieck at that time praised his ‘boundless imagination’ and described him as a ‘slightly odd being, stubborn, but noble, splendid, enthusiastic, admirably gifted, very cultivated, a brilliant writer and musician’. At the age of twenty-three, in Leipzig, Germany’s publishing capital, Schumann launched the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, an ambitious twice-weekly musical newspaper, which he kept going for ten years with the greater part of his critical writings.

Meanwhile, in July 1830, Schumann had given up his legal studies and turned to music. But he continued to be torn between his different aspirations, and on 8 June 1831, his twenty-first birthday, this Gemini invented in his diary two characters, Eusebius and Florestan, representing the two sides of his nature, fiery and gentle. Henceforth he associated his articles for the Neue Zeitschrift and later his scores with their names. In his Carnaval op. 9 he even represented the twins musically and so unmistakably that it is impossible henceforth not to recognise them beneath their changing masks. In the same month of June 1831, he created a third character, mysterious and rare in every sense of the word: Master Raro. ‘Florestan and Eusebius represent my double nature’, he explained, ‘and Raro the man in whom I would gladly see them united’. Raro, who came to be the supreme judge in many of his critical writings, resulted from the fusion of his name and Clara’s – claRARObert – a fusion of which he dreamed, although Clara was still only eleven years old.

In the summer of 1831 both Clara and Robert were busy putting the finishing touches to the first works they were to have published. Clara’s Quatre polonaises op. 1 appeared before Robert’s Abegg Variations op. 1. And they were to continue to advance thus side by side. Clara was Robert’s beloved muse, but she was above all his valiant companion-in-arms. To ignore that would be to fail to grasp the essence of their partnership. We must remember that Robert, although he was a wonderful sight-reader, was not a concert artist. For the twenty-five years from 1828 to 1853, during which they each composed, Clara was Robert’s chosen interpreter. She was his hands and therefore a part of himself. Inevitably, devoting her time to performance on stage meant that she could not compose as assiduously as he. But she never failed him.

Schumann’s Papillons, Intermezzi and Davidsbündlertänze were inspired by his affection for Clara the child prodigy, then his love for her as a prodigious young girl.

Papillons op. 2 ‘Please ask all of them [his brothers, and his sisters-in-law, to whom the work is dedicated] to read as soon as possible the last scene of Jean Paul [Richter]’s Flegeljahre, for the Papillons are intended as a musical representation of that masked ball. And ask them if something of Wina’s angelic love, Walt’s poetic nature and Vult’s swift-flashing soul are not reflected in those Papillons.’ Thus wrote Schumann in a letter to his mother dated 17 April 1832 (not long after the publication of his Abegg Variations), when he sent her a dedicatory copy of the first edition of Papillons. He was clearly pleased that Wieck appreciated his work, and Clara, he said, played it delightfully. The gifted writer was on his way to becoming a real composer, and he was overjoyed!

The twins Vult and Walt are counterparts of Florestan and Eusebius. At the masked ball, Vult (the musician) learns that Wina (the beautiful Polish girl) prefers his brother Walt (the poet); he disappears into the night to the sound of his flute playing.

Schumann told the critic Ludwig Rellstab that the scenes are as follows: ‘Masked ball – Walt – Vult – Masks – Wina – Vult’s dancing – The exchange of masks – Confession – Anger – Disclosures – Departure – Final scene and then the departing brother.’

We must note that the title refers not only to the butterflies that illustrate the title page of the published work, but also to the masks of the ball. Schumann used a bilingual pun through the words papillons, French for ‘butterflies’, and Larve, German for ‘mask’ but also ‘larva’; Larventanz, meaning ‘masked ball’, is ambiguous.

Papillons consists of twelve short pieces, preceded by six bars of introduction. In the masked ball (Larventanz), passionate and caustic, new pieces are interwoven with fragments of old dances, polonaises and waltzes, in triple time. The Grossvatertanz (Grandfather’s dance), borrowed from Richter, is used to criticise the philistine mentality of the old-fashioned bourgeoisie. This work is a forerunner of Carnaval: both have a cyclic structure, and, furthermore, the last part of Carnaval also bears the title Papillons.

Intermezzi op. 4 The six Intermezzi per il Pianoforte (an Italian title this time) were composed in 1832 and published the following year. On 13 July Clara asked for news of the ‘second volume of Papillons’ and on 5 April 1834 Schumann announced the publication of this work, describing its pieces as ‘längere Papillons’ (‘longer Papillons’), but he also saw them as ‘impromptus’. He originally intended to use the less sober title of ‘Pièces phantastiques’ for this set of scherzos and trios, a genre that was very popular with the Romantics. Since the word intermezzo is used in the title, the middle part bears the name alternativo. The six Intermezzi form a cycle, the three ‘attacca’ (used at the end of a movement to mean that the next must be stated without a break) creating a coherency comparable to that of Beethoven’s last Bagatelles. Full of passion,

the Intermezzi show Schumann’s mastery of pianistic style through varying moods, fluctuating tempos, kicking dotted rhythms, palpitating syncopations, and dense polyphony rich in allusion.

Davidsbündlertänze op. 6 After French and Italian titles Schumann turned to German for the character-pieces of his Davidsbündlertänze (Dances of the Adherents of the League of David), dating from the summer of 1837.

Since Papillons, Schumann had written Carnaval op. 9 in 1834-1835; there had also been several important events in his life. The first number of the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik appeared in April 1834, at a time when Schumann thought he was in love with Ernestine von Fricken, one of Wieck’s pupils. In autumn 1835 he became aware of his feelings for Clara, who was by then a radiant sixteen-year-old, admired by Mendelssohn who had recently been appointed conductor of the Gewandhaus concerts at Leipzig, in which she often appeared. In February 1836 Robert’s mother died and he sought comfort in Clara’s company. It was then that Wieck, wishing to protect his virtuoso daughter’s glorious future, broke off all relations with him. Believing that he had lost her forever, Schumann composed the dramatic F minor Sonata, the heart-rending Phantasie in C and the F-sharp minor Sonata, ‘Dedicated to Clara by Florestan and Eusebius’.

More than a year later, on 13 August 1837, Clara gave a concert in Leipzig; she and Robert met secretly and she formally pledged herself to him. His happiness gave him strength; he found the patience to wait and the courage to fight. Was he not like the valorous King David of the Old Testament who, with his companions-in-arms, had marched against the Philistines? The scene had already appeared as the apotheosis of Carnaval op. 9 (‘Marche des Davidsbündler contre les Philistins’). In celebration of Clara’s sweet but faraway promise, Robert-David invites his companions to dance around the Ark of the New Covenant. This new ‘Carnaval’, deeply moving in its intimacy, openly expresses the gentle love of Eusebius (zart) and the fiery love of Florestan (wild); each of the 18 pieces is credited to, and bears the initial of, either Eusebius or Florestan, or both (E., F., or E.F.).

Published in two books, or parts, of nine pieces each, these new ‘scènes mignonnes’ are based on a theme from Clara’s Mazurka in Soirées musicales op. 6: Schumann indicates ‘Motto v.[on] C. W’.

At the same time, on 13 September, Clara’s eighteenth birthday, Florestan and Eusebius published a delighted account of that work. And as number six had not yet been used for one of his compositions, Robert’s Davidsbündlertänze (Charakterstücke) became his opus 6 too, thus linking the two works and touchingly sanctifying a betrothal of which Wieck strongly disapproved.

Indeed, Friedrich Wieck firmly forbade his daughter to marry his former pupil and coldly refused when Robert came to ask for her hand. (But had it not always been his?) Nevertheless the young man wrote to Clara: ‘The Davidsbündlertänze and the Phantasiestücke will be finished in a week’s time. The Dances contain many wedding thoughts […]. They in particular are dedicated to you.

The story is an entire Polterabend [eve-of-the-wedding party] – you have only to imagine the beginning and the end of the story.’ He went on: ‘The Davidsbündlertänze are concealed behind Carnaval like faces behind a mask.’ At the head of the work he set the following epigraph: In each and every time Joy and sorrow go hand in hand: Be meek in joy And bear sorrow with courage Thus we find not only the contrasting moods of Florestan and Eusebius, but also the contrast between joy and sorrow that Schumann was to develop in his lieder of 1840. Before the last piece of the first book, marked Lebhaft (Lively), appears the additional explanation: ‘Hierauf schloß Florestan und es zuckte ihm schmerzlich um die Lippen’ (‘Hereupon Florestan stopped and his lips quivered sadly’). And the final dance, no. 18, Nicht schnell (Not fast), is preceded by the words ‘Ganz zum Überfluss meinte Eusebius noch Folgendes, dabei sprach aber viel Seligkeit aus seinem Augen’ (‘Eusebius considered the following quite superfluous; but at the same time he expressed much happiness with his eyes’). These two sections are

in C major, the key representing Clara. Intentionally Clara was the only one who understood the beginning (her ‘motto’ in G major) and the end of each of the two books.

Although each of the parts ends in C for Clara, the eighteen pieces constantly flirt with the key of B minor, expressing the prevailing mood of the work, one of intimacy, as in Innig, no. 2, which is recalled with emotion in no. 17b. 17a, in B major, is a dreamy meditation, Wie aus der Ferne (‘As from a distance’), full of mysterious echoes.

In 1850, ten years after his marriage to Clara, Robert Schumann turned once more to his Davidsbündlertänze of 1837. In many places he altered the phrasing; he added unnecessary repeats, filled in textures; he got rid of the Neapolitan sixth (B flat) in no. 8, which had announced so delightfully the opening appoggiatura (C sharp) of no. 9, and he eliminated the last bar of that same section with its very low C that had matched the ending of the last section of the work so very effectively.

It is as if, from his arrival in the Rhineland town of Düsseldorf, as worthy Capellmeister, by then the father of a large family, he felt a need to conceal the changing moods of his youth beneath a more seemly style: even the epigraph and the Eusebius and Florestan designations have disappeared. At the age of forty, was he so terrified of the unpredictable emotions that had impelled his playing and composing at the age of twenty-seven that he felt a need to stifle them?

But that is another story…

« Imaginons. C’est ce que sont toujours obligés de faire les historiens. Leur rôle est de recueillir des vestiges, les traces laissées par des hommes du passé […]. Mais ces traces sont légères, discontinues. Sur elles, une armature peut être bâtie, mais très frêle. Entre ces quelques étais demeure, béante, l’incertitude », prévient Georges Duby. Depuis le Moyen Âge qu’évoque le grand historien français, les traces sont plus abondantes, continues et fiables. Imaginons donc, puisque imaginer (fantasieren) est la clé du romantisme allemand et aussi celle de Robert Schumann ; mais imaginons au plus près de la vérité et des certitudes. Entré dans la légende, le couple Schumann n’a pas à redouter d’en sortir tant son histoire est unique dans l’art occidental.

Il peut paraître étonnant d’évoquer « le couple Schumann ». Le musicien l’a voulu ainsi : « La postérité doit nous regarder comme un seul cœur et une seule âme », écrivait-il à Clara Wieck, son unique bien-aimée. Adorer la pianiste et compositrice prodige, conquérir la jeune fille, faire huit enfants à la jeune femme, expirer dans les bras de son immortelle bien-aimée furent les étapes de l’aventure existentielle, créatrice et spirituelle du plus fulgurant génie de l’Allemagne musicale.

En mars 1828, à dix-sept ans, Robert Schumann quitte sa ville natale de Zwickau en Saxe pour entreprendre des études de droit à Leipzig. Invité à une soirée musicale, il aperçoit, émerveillé, un Enfant-Ange. Ainsi désigne-t-il la toute jeune virtuose de huit ans et demi, silencieuse et concentrée, qui lui découvre un monde céleste. Dès cet instant, l’étudiant, musicien jusqu’au fond de l’âme mais sans formation académique, n’aura de cesse de recevoir l’enseignement de Friedrich Wieck, le père de Clara, et même de s’enraciner dans le foyer des Wieck.

Appelés à se reconnaître, au sens des héros wagnériens, et à reconstituer autant qu’il est possible en ce monde l’androgyne mythique, les jeunes gens se ressemblent : blonds

avec des yeux bleu clair, ils ont le même regard perdu des artistes introvertis. Arrachée à sa mère, élevée sévèrement par son père, la fillette traumatisée s’est enfermée dans un mutisme dont elle commence seulement à sortir. Débordant d’imagination et plein d’humour, Robert l’ouvre au monde des idées. Mais lui-même est déjà un taciturne. Depuis la mort de sa sœur et surtout celle de son père vénéré, grand érudit, le jeune homme s’est réfugié dans sa foisonnante vie intérieure.

Sa puissance créatrice est toutefois intacte. À cette époque, Wieck vante « l’imagination sans limite [de cet] être un peu fantasque, têtu, mais noble, splendide, enthousiaste, admirablement doué, d’une vaste culture, écrivain et musicien de génie. » À vingt-trois ans, dans la capitale de l’édition allemande, Schumann sera effectivement en mesure de fonder une nouvelle et ambitieuse revue de musique, la Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, fleuron allemand et européen, qu’il portera dix années durant à bout de plume en dépit de son rythme éditorial bihebdomadaire.

Entretemps, en juillet 1830, Schumann a délaissé la jurisprudence pour la musique. Mais il se sent toujours tiraillé entre ses multiples aspirations. Aussi, le 8 juin 1831, pour ses vingt et un ans, ce « Gémeaux » donne-t-il naissance dans son journal intime à deux doubles de lui-même, Eusebius et Florestan. Il les associera dorénavant à ses critiques musicales puis à ses partitions. Dans le Carnaval op. 9, les jumeaux accéderont même à une incarnation musicale si inoubliable qu’il sera aisé de les reconnaître dorénavant sous leurs loups versicolores. En ce même mois de juin 1831, le musicien donne vie à un troisième personnage, mystérieux et rare dans tous les sens du terme : maître Raro. Il explique : « Florestan et Eusebius sont ma double nature, et Raro l’homme en qui j’aimerais les voir fusionner. » Or cet être supérieur, celui qui dans maintes critiques sera le juge suprême, provient de la fusion androgyne des prénoms de Robert et de Clara : claRARObert.

Union rêvée par le garçon… alors que la fillette n’a encore que onze ans.

En cet été 1831, tous deux sont « à l’œuvre » : ils peaufinent leur première publication.

Les Polonaises op. 1 de Clara devancent même les Variations Abegg op. 1 de Robert. Ils continueront d’avancer ainsi côte à côte. Muse adorée, Clara est plus encore le vaillant

compagnon d’armes de Robert. Ignorer cette dimension serait passer à côté de ce qui est l’essence de leur couple. Cela d’autant plus que, formidable déchiffreur, Robert n’est pas un concertiste.

Durant le quart de siècle (1828-1853) où ils composeront l’un devant l’autre, l’un pour l’autre, Clara sera son interprète bénie. Mieux, elle sera ses mains : donc une partie de son être. À partir de ce moment, selon la prévisible répartition des tâches, elle triomphera sur les estrades mais ne pourra plus se montrer aussi assidue que lui sur le terrain de la composition, sans le déserter jamais.

Les Papillons, Intermezzi et Davidsbündlertänze de Schumann sont animés de sa tendresse pour l’enfant prodige puis de sa quête de la jeune fille prodigieuse.

Papillons op. 2 « Priez-les tous de lire au plus tôt la scène finale des Flegeljahre (L’Âge ingrat) de Jean Paul [Richter] ; et alors les papillons éclos de ce Larventanz (bal masqué) se transformeront rapidement en sons. Et demandez-leur si dans ces Papillons ne se reflètent pas l’amour angélique de Wina, le sentiment poétique de Walt et l’âme droite et clairvoyante de Vult ? » écrit à sa mère, le 17 avril 1832, Robert, très fier de son deuxième recueil qui suit de près la sortie des Variations Abegg. Non sans un immense contentement, il lui signale aussi que Wieck aime beaucoup ses Papillons et que la jeune Clara les joue à ravir. Lui, l’écrivain surdoué, est en passe de devenir un vrai compositeur !

Joie ! L’histoire des jumeaux Vult et Walt est comme un double sonore de la venue littéraire de Florestan et Eusebius, ou l’inverse… Écoutons.

Au cours d’un bal masqué, Vult, le musicien, apprend de Wina, la belle Polonaise, qu’elle lui préfère son frère Walt, le poète. Vult disparaît alors dans la nuit ; au loin résonnent les derniers échos de sa flûte. Schumann précise au critique Ludwig Rellstab le déroulement des saynètes : « Bal masqué – Walt – Vult – Masques – Wina – Danse de Vult – Échange des masques – Aveu – Colère – Révélations – Éloignement – Scène finale et départ du

frère. » Les papillons sont à la fois les créatures ailées qui illustrent la page de titre de l’édition et les masques virevoltants de la fête polonaise.

Schumann confie aux danses à trois temps le soin de faire tournoyer son premier carnaval pianistique. En douze pièces, précédées d’une minuscule introduction, le bal masqué, passionné et caustique, entrelace des pages nouvelles à des fragments d’anciennes polonaises et valses que rien ne prédestinait à un tel rassemblement musical et narratif. L’origine jean-paulienne, la citation du Grossvatertanz (Danse du grand-père) pour dénoncer la mentalité philistine de la bourgeoisie arriérée et la structure en cycle organisé font de ces Papillons un pré-Carnaval – où l’une des pièces s’intitulera Papillons, toujours en français.

Intermezzi op. 4 Les six Intermezzi per il Pianoforte en appellent, eux, à la langue italienne. Composés en 1832, ils sont publiés en 1833. Le 13 juillet, Clara demande des nouvelles du « deuxième volume des Papillons » et, le 5 avril 1834, Schumann annoncera leur publication en tant que « Papillons plus considérables », mais il les considère aussi comme des « impromptus » et a pensé les appeler « pièces fantastiques ». Comprenons : une appellation inédite et fantaisiste lui semble indispensable pour désigner ce bouquet de scherzos avec trios, genre très prisé des romantiques. Conséquence du titre, l’intermède central de chaque Intermezzo s’intitule Alternativo. Plusieurs Intermezzi s’enchaînent au moyen d’un attacca qui confère à l’ensemble des six une cohérence comparable à celle des dernières Bagatelles de Beethoven. Passionnés, les Intermezzi marquent la conquête du vrai style pianistique de Schumann dans la diversité des humeurs, les fluctuations de tempo, les ruades rythmiques pointées ou les palpitations syncopées, et la dense polyphonie emplie d’allusions.

Davidsbündlertänze op. 6 Après le français et l’italien, Schumann en vient à sa chère langue allemande pour les titres et notations de caractère de ses « Danses des compagnons de David ». Entre les Papillons et ce nouveau carnaval de l’été 1837 s’insèrent le Carnaval op. 9 de 1834-1835 et nombre d’événements importants. En avril 1834 est sorti le premier numéro de la Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, « sa » revue musicale, époque où il a cru s’éprendre d’une élève de Wieck, Ernestine von Fricken ; à l’automne 1835, il a pris conscience de ses sentiments pour Clara, devenue une radieuse jeune fille de seize ans, que Mendelssohn dirige avec dilection au Gewandhaus de Leipzig ; en février 1836, à l’annonce de la mort de sa mère, douloureusement atteint, il a cherché quelque réconfort auprès de sa Clärchen.

C’est à cet instant que Wieck, soucieux de protéger le glorieux avenir de la virtuose, l’a brutalement écarté. Persuadé d’avoir perdu à jamais sa bien-aimée, Schumann a composé alors la dramatique Sonate en fa mineur, la déchirante Fantaisie en ut et a chargé Eusebius et Florestan d’offrir à Clara la Sonate en fa dièse mineur, à elle dédiée.

Plus d’un an plus tard, le 13 août 1837, à la faveur d’un concert de la pianiste à Leipzig, Robert aperçoit furtivement la jeune fille, qui lui confirme son indéfectible attachement. Ce bonheur inespéré le rend dorénavant invincible : il aura la patience de l’attente et le courage des combats.

N’est-il pas le valeureux roi David entouré de ses compagnons d’armes, ceux-là mêmes, droit venus de l’Ancien Testament, qui pourfendaient les Philistins à l’apogée du Carnaval op. 9 ? Pour fêter la promesse, si douce mais si lointaine, de son union avec l’Ange virtuose, David-Robert invite ses compagnons à danser autour de l’Arche de la nouvelle alliance. D’une intimité bouleversante, ce nouveau carnaval distille sans masque l’amour tendre (zart) d’Eusebius et l’amour sauvage (wild) de Florestan, qui signent ou cosignent chacune des dix-huit pièces de leurs initiales (E. ou F. ou E. F.).

Publiées en deux cahiers de neuf pièces, ces nouvelles « scènes mignonnes » jaillissent d’un « Motto v.[on] C. W. », emprunté à la Mazurka des Soirées musicales op. 6

Mieux encore : signe du destin, dans la répartition des opus auprès de plusieurs éditeurs, le numéro 6 est resté inemployé. Robert s’en empare aussitôt de telle façon que leurs Charakterstücke « opus 6 » s’enlacent comme des messages d’amour. Jolie manière de sanctifier leurs fiançailles maudites par Wieck.

En dépit de l’interdiction du terrible père, qui vient de refuser sèchement à son ancien disciple la main de sa fille – mais cette main, Robert ne la tient-il pas serrée dans les siennes depuis toujours ? –, l’amoureux éconduit écrit à Clara : « Les Davidstänze et les Phantasiestücke seront terminés dans huit jours. Dans les Danses, il y a beaucoup de motifs qui font rêver au mariage ; ils ont pris naissance dans les plus beaux moments d’excitation dont j’ai souvenir. Je t’expliquerai cela un jour. » Il ajoute : « Ils te sont tout particulièrement dédiés. C’est une fête à la veille des noces – tu n’as qu’à imaginer le début et la fin de l’histoire. » Il insiste : « Ces Danses sont tout autre chose que le Carnaval et se dissimulent derrière lui comme les visages sous le masque. » Un quatrain populaire, inscrit sur la page de titre, nous en prévient : En tous temps et en tous lieux, Joie et peine vont de pair ; Garde-toi pur dans le bonheur, Et courageux dans le malheur. À la dualité F. / E. s’ajoute donc celle du bonheur / malheur, thème que développeront à l’envi les lieder de 1840. Venant encore préciser l’enchaînement sémantique du discours musical, deux tendres et ironiques didascalies précèdent respectivement le Lebhaft (Vif) no 9 – « Après quoi Florestan s’interrompit, et ses lèvres tremblaient d’une douloureuse émotion » – et le Nicht schnell (Pas vite) no 18 – « Et Eusebius songeait encore à beaucoup d’autres choses, et une grande félicité se lisait dans ses yeux ». Ces deux pages s’énoncent en ut majeur, le

ton de Clara (selon la relation allemande des lettres et des notes : c = do). Clara est seule, en effet, à pouvoir comprendre le début (son motto en sol majeur) et la fin des deux cahiers.

Au long des dix-huit pièces se fait jour une irrésistible tension vers si mineur, véritable couleur affective du cycle, ton de l’Innig (Intime) no 2, qui résonnera de nouveau dans le no 17b en souvenir ému. Cela après le no 17a, en si majeur, onirique méditation « wie aus der Ferne » (comme venue du lointain), emplie d’échos mystérieux.

En 1850, marié depuis dix ans, Schumann rectifiera maints phrasés de son fragile miracle de jeunesse et lui ajoutera quantité d’inutiles reprises. Il égalisera, aplanira, supprimant la sixte napolitaine (ré bémol) du no 8 qui annonçait si délicieusement l’appoggiature initiale (do dièse) du no 9, éliminant la dernière mesure du même numéro avec son do extrême grave, nécessaire équivalent, pourtant, du do conclusif de l’œuvre entière. À son arrivée à Düsseldorf sur le Rhin, tout se passe comme si le digne Capellmeister, père de famille nombreuse, tentait de dissimuler sous le masque de la bienséance stylistique ses incartades de jeunesse, allant jusqu’à gommer le quatrain populaire et les initiales de ses anciens doubles. La fantasque douleur avec laquelle il osait composer et jouer à vingt-sept ans effrayera-t-elle l’homme de quarante ans au point de vouloir la noyer ?

Mais ceci est une autre histoire…
