Novembre Samedi 22 Aujourd’hui, j’ai acheté le recueil des danses anglaises en prévision de la venue de Gosnell, la suivante de ma femme, qui danse fort bien. Rencontrant là M. Playford, il m’a donné les chants latins de M. Deerings, qu’il a récemment imprimés.

ENGLISH The Dancing Master Londres, 1651 : les Gentilshommes de qualité peuvent enfin apprendre « toutes les règles pour danser les Country Dances » en se procurant “The English Dancing Master”, chez John Playford, “at his Shop in the Inner Temple neere the Church doore”. L’éditeur s’est en effet « risqué à porter cet ouvrage à la connaissance et à la bienveillante critique de tous les Ingenious Gentlemen amateurs de cet art », pour éviter la parution d’une « copie erronée et clandestine […] qui, si elle était publiée, déprécierait la Danse et ses professeurs, et serait un obstacle pour ceux qui apprennent ».

Jusqu’en 1728, 17 rééditions suivront, corrigées et augmentées, réalisées par Playford puis ses successeurs1, décrivant plus de 500 contredanses, accompagnées de leurs Tunes : ces recueils constituent la plus importante source de mélodies instrumentales anglaises du XVIIème siècle. Malgré sa grande précision, cette publication était sans doute pour les danseurs comme pour les musiciens de l’époque une sorte d’aide-mémoire, les titres rappelant aux uns une mélodie familière qu’ils restituaient toujours un peu différemment, aux autres les pas et les figures de country-dances cent fois pratiquées au village ou au bal de la cour. C’est le premier témoignage de la mémoire collective des musiques celtiques, comparable au travail de collectage effectué par le musicologue Francis O’Neill au début du XXème siècle dans les communautés irlandaises d’Amérique du Nord2.

L’index des titres est une véritable galerie de portraits : personnages mythologiques (Daphne, Amaryllis, Cupido’s garden…), historiques (Prins Rupert’s ou King James’s March, Duke of York’s Delight, Czar of Muscovy, The French King’s mistake…), lieux (Bloomsbury Market, Edinburgh Castle, America, Jamaica…), petits métiers (Carpenters’ maggott, Sheperd’s holiday, The Beggar boy), ou simplement Mr Lane, Lady Frances Neville, Betty, Joe ou Paul… dédicataires inconnus de ces Jigs, Maggotts, Morris, Gavots ou Steeples.

Comment donner vie à tous ces noms sur le papier ? Comment recréer ces musiques à partir des seules mélodies, traces fragiles d’une pratique infiniment plus complexe ? Comment s’approprier ici et maintenant ces airs d’une autre tradition, d’un autre temps ?

Nobody’s Jig “La Gigue de Personne” nous a ouvert une porte, c’était un air “à prendre”, puis nous nous sommes laissé guider dans ce dédale par des airs ayant inspiré des compositeurs anciens (plusieurs versions de “Woodycock” dans le Fitzwilliam Virginal Book) ou étrangers (variations de Jacob van Eyck, arrangements polyphoniques de William Brade). Choisir parmi toutes ces mélodies impliquait aussi de se laisser aller à des coups de cœur pour un air plus mélancolique ou un autre plus entraînant. Au fil des rééditions, des airs passés de mode avaient disparu du “Dancing Master” au profit d’airs plus récents adaptés de Masques ou d’opéras : notre choix présente des airs encore très liés au XVIème siècle, aux Ballad Tunes, à la modalité, et se limite aux 7 premières éditions (1651 à 1686), de John Playford lui-même.

Quelques pièces de ce programme proviennent d’autres sources, leurs auteurs ou leur style nous ayant semblé proches de l’esprit du “Dancing Master”. Ainsi c’est une sarabande – et non un maske3 – de John Adson qui ouvre la première édition, et les Grounds pour viole du manuscrit Drexel4 évoquent les publications de Playford pour la viole. Enfin, si “Pauls’ Steeple” est présent dans le recueil dès 1651, nous avons choisi d’en présenter l’une des deux versions virtuoses publiées en 1684 dans “The Division Violin”5.

Quelle version choisir parmi les multiples “allures” d’un même Tune ? C’est le problème quasi insoluble de celui qui collecte des musiques de tradition orale : selon les régions, les pays, les musiciens, les textes des chansons, la langue, les époques, les jours même… un air donne lieu à une infinité de variantes. Elles peuvent être minimes : quand la mémoire fait défaut on invente parfois, puis l’erreur est intégrée, la proposition acceptée, clin d’œil de l’instrumentiste, infime variation mélodique d’un air que tout le monde reconnaîtra, même lorsque la “Bravade”, mineure chez van Eyck, devient “Argieers”, majeur chez Playford.

Broken Consort Quels instruments choisir ? Dans ses préfaces, Playford n’évoque que le violon (treble violin) : celui-ci a toujours été l’instrument privilégié du ménétrier puis du maître à danser, qui le jouait généralement en solo.

Mais comment imaginer que d’autres musiciens ne se joignent pas à lui pour colorer, dynamiser, varier et harmoniser ces mélodies ? La publication d’un volume de basses est annoncée dans l’édition de 1713, aucun exemplaire n’en ayant été retrouvé à ce jour. L’iconographie témoigne néanmoins de petits groupes instrumentaux : en premier lieu les flûtes, à trois trous accompagnées du tambour (pipe and tabor), à six trous (ancêtre en bois du whistle irlandais actuel), traversières, ou flûtes à bec à neuf trous dont les XVIème et XVIIème siècles sont l’âge d’or. Appréciée en Angleterre dès le début du XVIème siècle, citée par Hamlet (“it’s as easy as lying”…6), la flûte à bec devient progressivement un instrument à la mode et fait son apparition dans le titre du recueil en 1696.

La viole de gambe, très prisée en Consorts, est en passe de devenir un instrument solo : des instrumentistes et compositeurs comme Christopher Simpson7 développent l’art de la Division : diminution écrite ou improvisée sur des Grounds, utilisant la basse de viole comme un instrument mélodique, mais aussi “Harp way” (cordes pincées) ou “Lyra way” (en accords). Éditeur éclectique, John Playford propose au public méthodes et recueils variés qui attestent de son intérêt pour tous les instruments : la viole8, le violon9, mais aussi la guitare et le cistre10, au répertoire moins savant que le luth, mais dont l’efficacité rythmique est sans égale pour mener la danse ; et même le virginal11, si richement servi par Byrd, Bull ou Farnaby au début du siècle, mais qui commence son déclin dès 1650. La richesse de son répertoire, comme celui du luth, instrument emblématique de la musique élisabéthaine, ne lui interdit pas de se mêler aux autres, et apporte une note plus savante aux contrepoints improvisés.

John Dowland et les Virginalistes se sont inspirés des mélodies populaires ou Ballad Tunes, ainsi qu’en témoigne la courte pièce sans titre pour luth seul.12

Divisions, Passaggi, Variations Comment choisir parmi les différents styles d’ornementation, harmoniser, arranger, écrire, improviser ?

L’enregistrement ne risque-t-il pas de figer ces musiques dont l’essence même est d’être toujours différentes et qui “résistent” à l’écriture ?

Les tempi dictés par la danse rendent peu praticables les diminutions savantes et contrapuntiques à la manière des virginalistes et des luthistes. En revanche, les variations pour flûte seule de Jacob van Eyck se prêtent volontiers à la danse. Nous les avons confiées alternativement à la flûte et au violon, et harmonisées : de nombreuses versions de ces airs, traduits et mis au goût hollandais, se trouvent en effet dans des volumes pour voix et luth édités à Anvers, Rotterdam ou Amsterdam13 ; et si “Der Fluyten Lusthof ” est sans conteste “Le Paradis de la flûte”14, il peut aussi être « utile à tous les amateurs de l’Art, sur la Flûte, et toutes sortes d’instruments à vent et autres… ». Paulus Matthys, éditeur de van Eyck, publie à la même époque d’autres anthologies de variations instrumentales15 faisant une mention très claire du violon, et présentant des pièces virtuoses du violoniste allemand Johan Schop, sur des chansons anglaises, des danses françaises et des madrigaux italiens.

La pratique de la diminution improvisée des Vénitiens – “Il vero modo di diminuir e far passaggi” – était certainement présente à Londres, importée peut-être par les Bassano, famille de cornettistes, flûtistes, trombonistes et facteurs d’instruments à vent immigrés à la fin du XVIème siècle. Ainsi lorsque sous le titre de “An italian rant”, on reconnaît La Mantovana, ronde célèbre dans toute l’Italie, il est bien tentant de l’orner “à l’italienne”…

Influences Sans doute l’ornementation italienne, pierre angulaire de nos pratiques de “musiciens anciens” de ce début de XXIème siècle (et somme toute peu éloignée du jazz), influence-t-elle nos diminutions improvisées, mais d’autres styles viennent enrichir l’approche historique de ces répertoires. Était-il possible de ne pas se laisser inspirer par les musiciens irlandais, héritiers et dépositaires de cette tradition ininterrompue de la musique celtique ? Sans prétendre aucunement à s’approprier leurs traditions, nous leur avons emprunté ornements, bourdons, coups d’archet, et avons tenté d’égaler la variété de leurs contrechants, la dynamique de leur jeu pour soutenir les danseurs.

La préoccupation de la danse a agi en filigrane tout au long de notre travail. Il n’était pas question de réaliser un programme destiné au bal, de “coller” toujours au plus près des figures de contredanse, pas même que toutes les musiques soient dansables : notre propos était de mettre en valeur les airs, ces airs qui trottent dans les têtes pendant des jours, des siècles… Mais la pratique d’autres musiques à danser, de la Renaissance ou de l’époque baroque, et les rencontres avec des danseurs nous ont bien sûr guidés pour le choix des appuis, des tempi, des carrures rythmiques ; peut-être ces mélodies portent-elles en elles-mêmes leur double fonction de chanson et de danse ?

Ainsi, en “fixant” une version parmi tant d’autres possibles, nous proposons une lecture à mi-chemin entre la réflexion de la recherche historique et la spontanéité de la pratique traditionnelle, conscients que notre style ne peut être que la somme des influences et des connaissances, enrichie des rencontres et des expériences, et concentrée par le filtre de notre mémoire. S’il reste impossible de s’approprier une tradition, notre souhait est de faire vivre un répertoire, pour que Nobody’s Jig devienne Everybody’s Tune…

On peut écouter la musique à des distances variables de connaissance et de désir. De loin, elle est simple fond sonore, ensemble de rythmes vaguement reconnus comme relevant de tel style et telle époque ; on perçoit à peine les instruments, on tape du pied, heureux, la tête ailleurs.

Pour peu qu’on vienne plus près, que l’on écoute vraiment et se pose quelques questions, l’oreille s’éveille, distingue, discerne, apprend à reconnaître la formation – ici, un broken consort composé de flûte, luth, clavecin, violon et viole – et les pièces elles-mêmes : en majeur ou en mineur, masques ou anti-masques, improvisations, variations, polyphonies... Peu à peu, on glisse de notre liberté contemporaine, nourrie par le jazz le et rock, l’Afrique et l’Orient, vers une autre liberté, celle de l’époque élisabéthaine et, doucement, des images surviennent : chansons à boire des tavernes shakespeariennes ; paysans se tendant la main par paires, tournoyant sur le gazon lors des fêtes de village ; dames et gentilshommes de la cour exécutant, avec précision, gravité et grâce, des pas appris pendant leurs très belles heures de beau loisir... Il s’agit bien de danser : la plupart des morceaux de ce disque ont été harmonisés par les musiciens des Witches euxmêmes à partir d’airs contenus dans le recueil de John Playford “Le Maître de la danse” (The Dancing Master).

Mais si l’on pénètre plus loin encore, on comprend que cette musique (comme toute musique quand on y pense... même la techno !) est un univers à part entière. Elle renferme des nuances insoupçonnées d’harmonie et de tempo, des complexités d’exécution redoutables, des choix originaux d’instruments... Ici comme toujours, la liberté la plus grande est celle que confère le travail le plus assidu ; c’est le respect des règles et des formes qui fait accéder les musiciens à la vraie magie de la musique (n’oublions pas que magie, comme mages, fait allusion au sacré)...

Soudain nous sommes tout éveil, toute attention ; nous voyons défiler dieux, fées, diablotins et elfes ; nous nous recueillons avec la Reine Elisabeth pour une rêverie en luth solo, sautons avec les Écossais au son de la cornemuse, et entendons le léger désaccord du whistle à six trous, dans “Drive the Cold Winter Away” (« Chassez loin de moi l’hiver glacial ») comme un cri désolé dans un champ enneigé...

Cela parle, résonne, vit, ravit... et l’on comprend pleinement en quoi ces artistes contemporains méritent leur nom de Witches : en effet, comme les sorciers et sorcières en tout temps et lieu, ils jouissent d’une fine intelligence, connaissent par cœur les éléments patiemment rassemblées de leur grimoire, et ont le don de nous transporter, nous métamorphoser... D’un coup de baguette magique, nous devenons la Reine vierge, dansons corps et âme la danse des paysans, vibrons à l’unisson avec la belle pandore ; quatre siècles s’évanouissent et la Renaissance est maintenant : oui, grâce à la musique, grâce à cette écoute-là, très proche, de la musique, il nous est parfois donné de naître et de renaître à chaque instant.

L’Art de la Danse, appelé “Orchestique” par les Anciens Grecs, est un Art d’agrément estimable et rare, qui convient aux jeunes Gentilshommes, s’ils en usent opportunément et avec civilité. Et Platon, le célèbre Philosophe, jugeait utile que les jeunes Enfants habiles apprennent à danser. Honoré autrefois dans les Cours des Princes, cet Art fut de tout Temps pratiqué par les plus nobles Héros ! [À présent il est pratiqué par] les Gentilshommes des Auberges de la Cour2, dont la gracieuse Agilité a couronné leurs grandes Solennités de l’Admiration de tous les Spectateurs. Chez les Anciens, cet Art fut discuté par Athénée3, Julius Pollux4, Caelius Rhodiginus5 et d’autres, et il est recommandé comme Excellent pour la Détente après des Besognes plus sérieuses, rendant le corps agile, fort, et gracieux dans son maintien ; c’est une aptitude qui convient fort bien à un Gentilhomme. Mais rien de tout cela ne m’aurait incité à publier cette Œuvre (sachant que sa Nature est en désaccord avec ces Temps) s’il n’y eut à l’Imprimerie une Copie erronée et clandestine, qui, si elle était publiée, déprécierait la Danse et ses Professeurs, et serait un obstacle pour ceux qui apprennent. Ainsi, pour la protection de tous ceux qui, ayant par moi une excellente Copie et l’assistance d’un Ami éclairé, je me suis risqué à porter cet Ouvrage à la connaissance et à la bienveillante critique de tous les Gentilshommes avertis, amateurs de cet Art, ne doutant point qu’ils aient la bonté de pardonner d’éventuelles imperfections et d’agréer l’honnête Intention de celui qui est un fidèle admirateur de vos Vertus, et Votre dévoué serviteur, J. The Dancing Master

‘The English Dancing Master: or, Plaine and easie Rules for the Dancing of Country Dances, with the Tune to each Dance. London, Printed by Thomas Harper, and are to be sold by John Playford, at his Shop in the Inner Temple neere the Church doore.’ So reads the title-page of The English Dancing Master, issued by the publisher and bookseller John Playford in 1651. And Playford justified his publication as follows: ‘But that there was a false and surrepticious Copy at the Printing Presse, which if it had been published, would have been a disparagement to the quality and the Professors thereof, and a hinderance to the Learner: Therefore, for prevention of all which, having an Excellent Copy by me, and the assistance of a knowing Friend, I have ventured to put forth this ensuing Work to the view, and gentle censure of all ingenious Gentlemen lovers of this Quality’.

The English Dancing Master (title shortened to The Dancing Master from the second edition onwards) continued in seventeen enlargements and additional volumes until 17281. Giving dance instructions for over five hundred country dances, with the tune to each of them, these books form the largest single source of seventeenth-century English instrumental melodies. Despite its precision, the publication no doubt served more often than not as a sort of aide-memoire for dancers and musicians of the time, enabling the latter to recall familiar tunes, which would always be played slightly differently, and the former to remember the steps and figures of the country dances they had performed a hundred times in the village or at court. It was the first testimony to the collective memory of Celtic music, comparable to the collecting work carried out by the musicologist Francis O’Neill at the beginning of the twentieth century among the Irish communities of North America2.

The list of titles paints a colourful picture, with characters from mythology (Daphne, Amaryllis, Cupido’s garden) and history (Prins Rupert’s or King James’s March, Duke of York’s Delight, Czar of Muscovy, The French King’s mistake), place names (Bloomsbury Market, Edinburgh Castle, America, Jamaica), means of livelihood (Carpenters’ maggott, Sheperd’s holiday, The Beggar boy) - or simply Mr Lane, Lady Frances Neville, Betty, Joe or Paul, the unknown dedicatees of these Jigs, Maggotts, Morris dances, Gavots or Steeples.

How can we bring all these written names to life? How can this music be recreated from the melodies alone, fragile traces of practices that were infinitely more complex? How can we, here and now, appropriate these airs from another tradition, another time?

Nobody’s Jig This piece opened the door for us; belonging to nobody, it was there for the taking. Then we allowed ourselves to be guided through the labyrinth by tunes that had inspired early composers (several versions of Woodycock in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book) or composers from other countries (variations by Jacob van Eyck, polyphonic arrangements by William Brade). Choosing from all these melodies also meant following our feelings, preferring this piece because of the immediate appeal of its melancholy, that one for its liveliness. From one edition to the next of The Dancing Master, tunes that had gone out of fashion were replaced by more recent ones, adapted from masques or operas. We have chosen tunes that are still very much related to the sixteenth century, to ballad tunes and to modality. And we have kept to the first seven editions (1651 to 1686), published by John Playford himself.

Some of the pieces on this programme were taken from other sources, when their author or style seemed to us close to the spirit of The Dancing Master. Thus a sarabande - and not a maske3 - by John Adson begins the first edition, and the Grounds for the viol from the Drexel manuscript4 evoke Playford’s publications for that instrument. Finally, although Pauls’ Steeple was present in The Dancing Master from 1651, we have chosen to present one of the two virtuosic versions that were published in 1684 in The Division Violin5.

How do we make a choice, when there are so many different possibilities for the same tune? That is the insoluble problem faced by the collector of music of oral tradition: one tune may give rise to an infinite number of variants, depending on origin, interpretation, language, text, period, and even

the day on which the piece is played. The differences may be minimal: the memory lapses, the musician improvises to fill the gap and his mistake becomes part of the piece, his proposal is accepted. Thus even a tune that everyone can recognise may undergo slight changes. Bravade, in minor for van Eyck, becomes Argieers, in major for Playford. The differences may also be more consequential: for example, the courante Excuse moy (7th edition of The Dancing Master, 1686) seems to bear only a remote resemblance to John Dowland’s song Can she excuse (First Booke of Songs, 1597), presented here in the form of a Galliard for broken consort by Thomas Morley (First Booke of Consort Lessons, 1611).

Broken Consort Which instruments should we choose? In his prefaces, Playford mentions only the treble violin, traditionally the favourite instrument of the village musician, then of the dancing master, who usually played it solo. But how can we imagine that other musicians did not join in to inject colour, enthusiasm, variety and harmony into these melodies? The publication of a volume of basses was announced in the 1713 edition of The Dancing Master, but so far no copy of the book has come to light. Iconographical sources nevertheless show that small instrumental groups were used at that time. Notably, flutes - the pipe and tabor (three-hole duct flute and snare drum, played together by one person), the six-hole duct flute (wooden ancestor of the present-day Irish whistle), transverse flutes, or recorders, which were at the height of their popularity in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Appreciated in England from the beginning of the sixteenth century, mentioned by Hamlet (‘It is as easy as lying’…6), the recorder gradually became a fashionable instrument, making its appearance in the title of the anthology in 1696.

The viola da gamba, highly valued in consorts, was about to become a solo instrument: instrumentalists and composers such as Christopher Simpson7 developed the art of division - a technique of variation, especially common in viol playing and generally extemporised, in which the notes of a ground are divided into shorter ones. The bass viol was used as a melodic instrument, but it was also played ‘harp-way’ (i.e. plucked) or ‘lyra-way’ (in chords).

An eclectic publisher, John Playford offered the public various methods and anthologies showing his interest in all kinds of instruments: the viol8 and the violin9, but also the gittern and the cittern10. The latter’s repertoire is not as sophisticated as that of the lute, but its rhythmic efficiency is unrivalled when it comes to leading the dance. And he even took an interest in the virginal11, an instrument so exquisitely served by William Byrd, John Bull and Giles Farnaby at the beginning of the century, but which went into decline from 1650. Its rich repertoire, like that of the lute, an instrument typical of Elizabethan music, did not preclude performance with other instruments and it brought a more elegant note to the extemporised counterpoint. John Dowland and the English virginalists were inspired by popular melodies or ballad tunes, as is shown by the short untitled piece for solo lute included in this programme12.

Divisions, Passaggi, Variations How do we choose between the different ornamental styles, and harmonise, arrange, write and improvise?

Is there not a danger, in recording these pieces, of creating something that is too ‘set’, when this music is by nature mutable, belonging essentially to the oral tradition?

The tempi dictated by the dance make the skilful contrapuntal diminutions of the virginalists and lutenists largely impracticable. On the other hand, Jacob van Eyck’s variations for solo recorder lend themselves without difficulty to the dance. We have entrusted them in turn to the recorder and the violin, and harmonised them. Indeed, numerous versions of these airs, translated and adapted to suit Dutch taste, are to be found in volumes for voice and lute published in Antwerp, Rotterdam or Amsterdam13; and if Der Fluyten Lusthof is undoubtedly ‘The Recorder’s Paradise’14, it may also be ‘useful to all lovers of the Art, on the Recorder, and on all sorts of instruments, wind and others…’. Van Eyck’s publisher, Paulus Matthys, brought out other collections of instrumental variations15 at that time, clearly mentioning the violin, and presenting virtuosic pieces by the German violinist Johan Schop based on English songs, French dances and Italian madrigals.

The Venetian practice of improvised diminution (‘Il vero modo di diminuir e far passaggi’) was certainly present in London at that time, possibly taken there by the Bassano family of musicians (wind players and makers of wind instruments), who had moved to England at the end of the sixteenth century. So when we realise that An Italian rant is none other than La Mantovana, a round dance that was famous throughout Italy, it is most tempting to use Italian-style ornaments.

Influences Italian-style ornaments - the cornerstone of our practice as modern exponents of early music (all things considered, quite close to jazz) - no doubt influence our improvised diminutions, but other styles enrich our historical approach to these repertoires. Could we possibly not allow ourselves to be inspired by the Irish musicians who are the heirs to and guardians of this unbroken tradition of Celtic music? Without any intention of appropriating their traditions, we have borrowed from them ornaments, drones and bowing strokes, and have attempted to match the variety of their counter-melodies and the dynamics of their playing in accompaniment to dances.

Throughout our work on these pieces, we kept in mind the fact that they were intended for the dance.

Presenting a programme intended purely for dancing was out of the question and we made no attempt to keep strictly to the figures of the country dance, and not all the pieces are even danceable! Our aim was to focus attention on the tunes - tunes that are as catchy to us as they were to people living centuries ago. But we were obviously guided in our choice of accents, tempi and phrase structures by our experience with other dance music - that of the Renaissance and Baroque periods - and by our contact with dancers. Perhaps the dual function as songs and dances is implicit in these pieces.

Thus in ‘pinning down’ just one of so many possible versions, we propose a reading that steers a middle course between the cerebral approach of historical research and the spontaneity of traditional practice. We are aware that our style can only be the result of influences and knowledge,

enriched by encounters and experiences - the whole sifted through the filters of our memory. If it is impossible to appropriate a tradition, our wish is to bring this repertoire to life, so that Nobody’s Jig becomes Everybody’s Tune…

Music can be listened to from varying distances of knowledge and desire. From afar, it can be nothing but an auditory backdrop, a series of rhythms we vaguely recognize as belonging to a particular period or style; we scarcely notice what instruments are playing; we tap our feet absentmindedly, content but ignorant.

If we come a bit closer, though, and start asking ourselves what the music is about, our ears prick up and we begin to distinguish a bit more of what is going on and thanks to whom – in this case the group is a “broken consort” made up of flute, lute, harpsichord, violin and bass viol; we can also discern a few things about the pieces themselves - whether they’re in minor or major key, masks or anti-masks, whether they involve improvisation, variation or polyphony... Gradually, we allow ourselves to move away from our own, contemporary freedom, nourished by the sounds of jazz and rock, Africa and Arabia, towards another freedom - that of Elizabethan times. Images begin to coalesce inside our brains - drinking songs in Shakespearian taverns; peasant couples grabbing hands and whirling about on the lawn during village festivals; ladies and gentleman of the court executing steps imbued with gravity and grace, learned during their hours of precious leisure... Yes, dancing is what it’s all about - most of the pieces on this CD are based on simple melodies from John Playford’s collection The Dancing Master, and have been harmonized by the Witches musicians themselves.

If we move in still closer, we come to see that this music (like all forms of music, in fact... including

techno!) is a universe unto itself. It contains endless nuances of harmony and tempo, daunting complexities of execution, an original choice of instruments... Here as elsewhere, it’s the hardest work that leads to the greatest freedom, and the rigorous respect of rules and forms that gives access to the highest magic (we mustn’t forget that the word magic, like Magi, has to do with the sacred).

Suddenly we are utterly wakeful and attentive: gods, fairies, elves and goblins go filing past us; we withdraw in the company of Queen Elizabeth for a revery in solo lute, we leap and twirl with the Scots to the sound of bagpipes, and hear the slight mistuning of the six-holed whistle in Drive the Cold Winter Away as a desolate cry over an endless expanse of snow...

The whole thing becomes resonant, throbbing, alive, and we see that these contemporary artists indeed live up to their chosen name of Witches - yes, like sorcerers and sorceresses of every time and place, they have a highly refined intelligence, an in-depth knowledge of the ingredients patiently collected for their book of spells, and the ability to transport us, metamorphose us... At the stroke of a wand, we become the Virgin Queen, go dancing body and soul with the peasants of yesteryear, vibrate in unisson with the lovely pandora... Four centuries shimmer into nothingness and the Renaissance is now - yes, renaissance, a rebirth: thanks to music, thanks to the close and careful apprehension of ancient music, we can know what it’s like to be born and reborn afresh at every instant.

The Art of Dancing called by the Ancient Greeks Orchestice, and Orchestis, is a commendable and rare Quality fir for yong Gentlemen, if opportunely and civilly used. And Plato, that Famous Philosopher thought it meet, that yong Ingenious Children be taught to dance. It is a quality that has been formerly honoured in the Courts of Princes, when performed by the most Noble Heroes of the Times! The Gentlemen of the Inees of Court, whose sweet and ayry Activitiy has crowned their Grand Solemnities with Admiration to all Spectators. This Art has been Anciently handled by Athenaeus, Julius Pollux, Caelius Rhodiginus, and others, and much commend it to be Excellent for Recreation, after more serious Studies, making the body active and strong, gracefull in deportment, and a quality very much beseeming a Gentleman. Yet all this should not have been an Incitement to me for Publication of this Worke (knowing these Times and the Nature of it do not agree,) But that there was a false and surrepticious Copy at the Printing Presse, which if it had been published, would have been a disparagement to the quality and the Professors thereof, and a hinderance to the Learner: Therefore for prevention of all which, having an Excellent Copy by me, and the assistance of a knowing Friend; I have ventured to put forth this ensuing Worke to the view, and gentle censure of all ingenious Gentlemen lovers of this Quallity; not doubting but their goodnes will pardeon what may be amisse, and accept of the honest Intention of him that is a faithfull honourer of your Virtues, and Your servant to command, J.
