S’immerger dans une telle œuvre est un long voyage duquel on ne revient que profondément transformé, tout en voulant sans cesse repartir.

Approcher ces pages où ne souffle que le génie force l’humilité en même temps que la joie d’en être le messager.

Dire avec sa voix ce qui frémit là de vitalité et d’inventivité obsède et brûle. Ecrase.

C’est alors que je me suis rendu compte que là exactement, au bord de ce vertige, résidait la plus grande difficulté : être capable d’éviter la sécheresse, l’assèchement que ne peut manquer de provoquer un texte exigeant et complexe. Non pas qu’il y ait là dans ces pages la moindre sécheresse, non, c’est plutôt la confrontation avec tant de lumière qui opacifie l’interprète, c’est la force d’un texte visionnaire qui peut étrangler la déclamation et la plaquer au sol. De plus les exigences techniques mettent le joueur en danger en l’enfermant parfois tout entier dans des buissons d’épines, dont il n’est que trop heureux de sortir, oubliant ainsi au passage la rose qui y scintillait. Et c’est alors toute une narration qui conte le buisson et oublie la rose.

Bach appelle le violon à porter son langage, comme il l’a fait avec les claviers, l’affranchissant de son habituel vocabulaire instrumental pour le plier ainsi à de nouveaux idiomes techniques et expressifs appartenant ainsi aussi bien au violon qu’au clavecin.

Mais il est clair que la polyphonie sur le violon, avec ses quatre cordes pour tout clavier, est parfois seulement mimée, esquissée, rendue à l’imagination bien que perpétuellement invitée et même sommée de figurer. Il n’empêche, éployer un arpègement sur le violon prend une signification sensitive et poétique un peu différente que sur le clavier; même si le sens harmonique en est inchangé, il tient davantage de la roue du paon ou du coup d’éventail que de l’égrènement étoile sur les touches noires et blanches. Pourquoi ? C’est parce que le violon ne peut se défaire de sa sensuelle narration de chanteur, sa verve séductrice et notes de cœur pas plus que de son indéfectible allégresse héritée d’un long et souriant compagnonnage avec la danse. C’est son héritage génétique en quelque sorte, et qu’il ne peut nier sans risquer d’être sec.

Dans les « Sei Solo » Bach repousse les limites techniques et harmoniques du violon et leur confère une tension éblouissante que l’on doit entendre. Mais il y coule aussi un sang violent et une émo-

tion charnelle qui en est le contrepoint rafraîchissant et heureux. C’est ce que j’aimerais tant donner à entendre.

Plus que jamais j’aimerais remercier Jean-Paul Combet de m’avoir invitée à faire ce voyage dont j’étais loin de me croire capable, et dont la confiance m’a soutenue de bout en bout.

Sei Solo a Violino senza Basso accompagnato Le cycle de trois Sonates et trois Partitas pour violon seul de Johann Sébastian Bach représente sans aucun doute un sommet dans la musique occidentale pour violon.

Aussi bien à l’égard de la technique de jeu que de composition, l’œuvre soumet de nouveaux critères que le temps épargnera, sans aucune prise sur leur rayonnante actualité. La valeur exceptionnelle de ces compositions fut déjà reconnue au XVIIIème siècle, quoiqu’on leur prêtât d’autres significations quant à leur valeur artistique. Selon Carl Philipp Emanuel, second fils de Bach, elles constituèrent en premier lieu un témoignage des profondes connaissances de son père concernant le vocabulaire et les idiomes des instruments à cordes, d’où leur valeur unique en tant que matériel d’étude : « [J.S Bach] comprenait, pressentait parfaitement les vastes possibilités des instruments à cordes. En témoignent ses Soli pour violon et pour violoncelle sans basse. Un des plus grands violonistes me disait un jour qu’il n’est rien de meilleur, rien de plus complet à conseiller à celui qui désire se perfectionner dans l’art du violon que ces six solos sans basse mentionnés plus haut » (lettre à Johann Nikolaus Forkel, fin 1774).

Johann Philipp Kirnberger, élève de Bach, mit en évidence le remarquable tour de force dans la composition des Sei Soli. Pour lui l’éminente école polyphonique persistait immanquablement dans l’art de l’omission ; celui et seulement celui qui possédait les secrets et les intrications de l’harmonie et du contrepoint pouvait se les représenter, profilés, dévoilés dans une œuvre aux voix réduites. Dans la première partie de son traité « Die Kunst des reinen Satzes in der Musik » (1771), Kirnberger, après s’être expliqué sur les fugues à deux et trois voix, se tourne ensuite logiquement vers les compositions pour un instrument mélodique sans accompagnement : « Il est encore plus difficile d’écrire une simple mélodie dans son contexte harmonique sans le moindre accompagnement ; de sorte qu’il est impossible d’ajouter une voix sans erreur : et quand bien même, la voix serait inchantable et malhabile. J.S Bach a de cette manière sans aucun accompagnement, écrit 6 sonates pour le violon et 6 pour le violoncelle.»

L’extraordinaire difficulté que Bach projette dans la réduction potentielle des moyens sonores, réside dans le fait qu’il parvient souverainement à réaliser toute la richesse harmonique et polyphonique de son propre langage musical, et cela malgré les possibilités réduites de l’instrument mé-

lodique en matière d’accord et de jeu à plusieurs voix. Une remarque de Johann Friedrich Reichardt le confirme encore, qui reconnaît la maîtrise démontrée des Soli pour violon à la capacité du compositeur de se mouvoir en toute aisance et liberté possibles dans les propres chaînes qu’il s’est imposées.

Avec ses œuvres pour un instrument mélodique non accompagné, Bach s’est aventuré dans un espace sonore où peu de compositeurs avant lui s’étaient risqués, laissant inentamé ou presque ce formidable potentiel.

Les Suites pour violon seul de Johann Paul von Westhoff (1656-1705), par leur essence significative, ont certainement marqué Bach et peut-être même figuré un éventuel modèle pour lui. Figure marquante de la Dresdner Hofkapelle de 1674 à 1697, le violoniste Johann Paul von Westhoff fut en outre employé de 1699 jusqu’à sa mort comme secrétaire et musicien de la Chambre à la cour de Weimar où le jeune Bach ne manqua certainement pas de le rencontrer lors de son premier engagement en 1703. Westhoff avait déjà publié en 1682 à son propre compte une collection, aujourd’hui disparue, de Suites « Erstes Dutzend Allemanden, Couranten Sarabanden & Giquen Violino Solo sonder Basso Continuo auf die neuesteManier mit, 2.3.& 4. Sayten » et en 1696 l’avait prolongé en quelque sorte par les six Suites elles-mêmes toutefois préservées en deux exemplaires.

Les Suites de Westhoff présentent certes assez peu de liens avec les œuvres de Bach du point de vue stylistique, quoique dédiées les unes comme les autres au jeu polyphonique pour un violon solo sans basse ; elles visent et s’élèvent toutefois, grâce aux savants principes du pur contrepoint, aux confins du plus grand art.

Tandis que Westhoff parvenait à ses fins de composition en réduisant et sacrifiant sensiblement la complexité harmonique et la grâce mélodique, Bach, provoqué par le défi imposé des paramètres solistiques, se surpassait, poussant plus loin même encore que dans ses grandes œuvres pour orgue et clavier la richesse harmonique, enrichie plus encore parce que donnée à entendre peut-être seulement au travers de l’interprète, parce que destinée à s’épanouir dans l’imaginaire de l’auditeur attentif. Le mot de Philipp Spitta à propos de la chaconne de la deuxième partita, la décrivant comme « le triomphe de l›esprit sur la matière », caractérise certainement aussi le monumental cycle tout entier.

La sonate en sol mineur (BWV1001) ouvre la série. La disposition en quatre mouvements de la composition, les lignes mélodiques ornées de l’Adagio initial, tout comme la forme de la fugue du second mouvement rappellent les grandes sonates pour violon de l’opus V de Corelli. L’Adagio se profile de prime abord dans l’enchevêtrement de guirlandes décoratives en doubles et triples croches posées sur les colonnes de lourds accords de noires pour vagabonder ensuite dans de plus lointaines sphères harmoniques. Précisément au milieu du mouvement, le double visage enharmonique d’un accord de septième diminuée renvoie à la tonique en sol mineur.

La Fuga enchaînée, au thème court et concentré, est du point de vue formel plus légère, malgré la densité donnée aux orfèvrements du thème, car celui-ci, en dehors de quelques divertissements, s’invite à peu près dans chaque mesure. La Siciliana évoque le dialogue d’un motif de basse concis avec deux voix de dessus le plus souvent parallèles, comme dans un mouvement de sonate en trio. La stricte hiérarchie de cet arrangement ainsi que des structures périodiques sera progressivement rompue au profit d’apparitions du thème de la basse dans d’autres positions.

Suit en conclusion un Presto furioso dont l’harmonie implicitement aplanie se dissimule derrière les contours linéaires de lignes richement crénelées en doubles-croches.

La partita en si mineur (BWV1002), découpée classiquement en quatre mouvements selon le schéma habituel de la Suite, diffère ici par la Bourrée finale, que l’on a troquée contre l’habituelle Gigue. Le savoir-faire de Bach a doté chaque mouvement d’un double, de son double, ce qui lui permet de conserver chaque fois la même charpente harmonique en l’investissant de deux manières, la première s’élaborant en accords touffus, et la seconde s’élançant dans de virtuoses figures, arpègements brisés et autres bariolages.

On ne manquera pas dans cette œuvre si exigeante techniquement, d’être frappé par les accents passionnés et tragi-mélancoliques empreignant de la même manière d’autres œuvres de Bach en si mineur.

La partita en ré mineur (BWV1004) montre ici encore une configuration modifiée de la Suite. Aux quatre mouvements de base, ici inchangés, que sont l’Allemande, la Courante, la Sarabande et la Gigue vient s’ajouter encore une monumentale Ciaccona, qui figure l’une des plus impressionnantes créations de Bach.

L’écriture à une voix prédomine dans les 1er, 2ème et 4e mouvements, réclamant un jeu tout en impulsions et vigueur rythmique, dotant les larges progressions harmoniques de lignes d’arpèges brisées et notes aiguës posées en étoiles.

Dans la Sarabande, les doubles-cordes et les rythmes annoncent déjà la Chaconne finale, laquelle en sa formidable expansion (257 mesures) dépasse la somme des quatre mouvements précédents. Bach s’est aventuré ici dans un type de mouvement rarement employé par lui, qui offre un défi supplémentaire par la persistance réitérée de son schéma de quatre mesures.

Au cours des pérégrinations de sa fantaisie, des élargissements de la sobre substance de base par de permanentes variations, le compositeur impose à l’interprète un incomparable foisonnement de passages virtuoses, longues successions d’accords et arpèges jamais auparavant conçus dans cette forme. Bach élevait ainsi la technique de violon vers d’autres plus puissants critères mais en même temps il élevait la technique de composition à une toute nouvelle dimension.

FRENCH To immerse oneself in a work like this is to begin a long journey from which one can only return profoundly transformed, and with the constant wish to set out once more.

To approach these pieces where genius reigns alone compels humility at the same time as joy at being their messenger.

To utter with one’s own voice all the quivering vitality and invention of this music is an obsessive, blazing... overwhelming experience.

Then I realised that it was at this precise point, on the verge of such intoxication, that lay the greatest difficulty : to be capable of avoiding the dryness, the drying up of resources that must inevitably be provoked by so demanding, so complex a text. Not that there is in these pages the least trace of dryness, no, it is the confrontation with so much light that renders the performer opaque, it is the strength of a visionary text that can strangle declamation or leave it desperately earthbound. What is more, its technical demands endanger the player, sometimes hedging him about him with thorn bushes on all sides, from which he is only too happy to find a way out, while forgetting the rose that glistened atop them. And then the outecome is an account that tells merely of the bush and neglects the rose.

Bach calls on the violin to be the carrier of his language, as he did with the keyboard family, emancipating it from its customary instrumental vocabulary in order to bend it to new technical and expressive idioms belonging to both violin and harpsichord.

But it is clear that polyphony on the violin, with its four strings substituting for a whole keyboard, is sometimes only mimed, sketched, rendered for the imagination despite being constantly invited, even commanded to represent. All the same, to spread an arpeggio on the violin assumes a somewhat different sensory and poetic signification from the same act on a keyboard ; even if its harmonie meaning is unchanged, it has about it more of the opening of a peacock’s tail or of the flick of a fan than of the telling out of a series of black and white keys. Why? Because the violin cannot rid itself of its sensual singer’s narration, its seductive verve or its heart felt notes, any more than it can lose its unshakeable gaiety inherited from a long and benign companionship with the dance. This is, so to speak, its genetic heritage, which it cannot renounce without running the risk of dryness.

In the Sei solo Bach pushes back the technical and harmonie boundaries of the violin, giving these pieces a powerful tension that must be heard. Yet in them, too, courses a violent flow of blood and a carnal emotion that is its refreshing, happy counterpoint. This is what I would so like to convey in my playing.

More than ever, I would like to thank Jean-Paul Combet for inviting me to set out on this journey which I was far from thinking myself capable of his confidence sustained me from start to finish.

Johann Sébastian Bach: Sei Solo a Violino senza Basso accompagnato Johann Sebastian Bach’s cycle of three sonatas and three partitas for solo violin undoubtedly marks a high point in western violin music.

These works set new standards in both playing and compositional technique, which have lost none of their relevance over the centuries. Their exceptional nature was already recognised in the eighteenth century, although their artistic significance was variously interpreted. For Bach’s second son Cari Philipp Emanuel, these compositions represented first and foremost a document of his father’s profound knowledge of the idiomatic use of string instruments, which made them valuable as unique material for study: ‘[J.S. Bach] understood to perfection the possibilities of ail stringed instruments. This is evidenced by his solos for the violin and for the violoncello without bass. One of the greatest violinists told me once that he had seen nothing more perfect for becoming a good violinist, and could suggest nothing better for anyone eager to learn, than the said violin solos without bass’ (letter to Johann Nikolaus Forkel, late 1774).

Bach’s pupil Johann Philipp Kimberger, on the other hand, emphasised the works’ achievement in terms of compositional technique. In his view, true supremacy in polyphonie composition lay in the art of omission; only he who truly mastered the intricate secrets of harmony and counterpoint could present them unadorned in a work for a reduced number of voices. In the first part of his treatise Die Kunst des reinen Satzes in der Musik (The art of true Composition in Music, 1771), after commenting on fugues in three and two voices, Kirnberger logically goes on to discuss works for an unaccompanied melody instrument: ‘It is even more difficult, without the slightest accompaniment, to write a simple melody so harmonically determined that it is impossible to add a voice to it without making mistakes; not to mention the fact that the added voice would be quite unsingable and clumsy. In this style we possess 6 sonatas for the violin and 6 for the violoncello, entirely without accompaniment, by J. S. Bach.’

The extraordinary difficulty Bach created for himself, in thus reducing his sonic resources to the bare minimum, was to realise the full harmonie andpolyphonie richness of his musical language, without making noticeable concessions, on a melody instrument with only a limited capacity for playing chords or polyphony. This is further confirmed by a remark by Johann Friedrich Reichardt, for whom the mastery demonstrated in the solo violin works shows the composer’s ability to move in his

self-imposed chains with the greatest possible freedom and confidence.

In his works for an unaccompanied solo instrument Bach was venturing into a field that had been explored by few composers before him, and whose potential was very far from being exhausted.

A possible model of special importance is clearly to be found in the solo suites of Johann Paul von Westhoff (1656-1705). This outstanding violinist was a member of the Dresden court orchestra from 1674 to 1697, and then worked from 1699 until his death as chamber secretary and musician at the court of Weimar, where the young Bach certainly encountered him during his first period of employment there (1703). Westhoff had already published at his own expense in 1682 a now lost collection of suites entitled Erstes Dutzend Allemanden, Couranten, Sarabanden & Giquen Violino Solo sonder Passo Continuo auf die neueste Manier mit 2. 3. & 4. Sayten (A first set of a dozen allemandes, courantes, sarabandes and gigues for solo violin without basso continuo, in the latest style, using two, three and four strings [simultaneously]), and in 1696 a further set of six, of which two copies are still existant.

Although Westhoff ’s suites have little in common stylistically with those of Bach, both collections aim to combine polyphonie playing on an unaccompanied violin with the rules of pure composition, and thus to elevate this type of work to the status of high art.

But whereas Westhoff achieves this ambition only through a perceptible lessening of harmonie complexity and melodie charm, it seems that the very challenge of the solo medium stimulated Bach to surpass even the harmonie riches of his great organ and keyboard works - perhaps because here the harmonies can merely be suggested by the performer, and trulyblossom only in the receptive imagination of an attentive listener. In this respect, Philipp Spitta’s reference to the Ciaccona of the Second Partita as a ‘triumph of mind over matter’ is also a telling description of the whole monumental cycle.

The set begins with the Sonata in G minor (BWV 1001). The work’s four-movement layout, the ornamented melodic lines of the opening Adagio and the fugal form of the second movement are all elements reminiscent of the great violin sonatas of Arcangelo Corelli, which appeared around 1700. The Adagio strides forward in massive crotchet chords surrounded by decorative chains of semiquavers and demisemiquavers, and soon strays into distant harmonie realms. At the precise midpoint of the

movement, the enharmonie transformation of a diminished seventh chord restores the tonic of G minor.

The Fuga that follows is fairly loose from a formal point of view, but the short, pithy theme is extremely densely worked, for with the exception of a few episodes it appears in virtually every bar. The Siciliana suggests the dialogue style of a trio sonata movement, with a strongly motivic bass and two upper voices generally treated in parallel motion. The strict hierarchy of this arrangement and the periodic structure are gradually broken up in the course of the movement, so that the bass theme also appears in other positions.

The sonata ends with a Presto furioso, whose wide-ranging implicit harmonies are concealed beneath the contours of the monophonie, extremely jagged line in semiquavers.

The Partita in B minor (BWV 1002) follows the classical model of the four-movement Suite, except that the composer has replaced the customary concluding Gigue by a BourrĂŠe. The device of providing each movement with a double (variation) enables Bach to illustrate the same basic harmonie framework twice over, first of all in a chordal setting, then in virtuoso figuration and broken arpeggios.

A striking feature of this technically very demanding composition is its passionate, melancholic, indeed tragic tone, which it shares with other Bach works in this key.

The Partita in D minor (BWV 1004) also displays a modified version of the four-movement suite form.

The four core movements (Allemanda, Corrente, Sarabanda, Giga), here retained without change, are followed by a monumental Ciaccona which may be ranked with Bach’s most impressive creations.

The first, second and fourth movements are dominated by a monophonie style characterised by motor rhythms, with the wide-ranging harmonie excursions indicated by broken triads and emphatic top notes.

In the Sarabanda the double stopping and the rhythm already point forward to the final Ciaccona, so expansive at 257 bars that it is longer than the four preceding movements combined. Here Bach tackled a type of movement he rarely used, which set him an additional challenge because of its unchanging basic four-bar pattern (the harmonisation of a descending tetrachord).

In the course of his systematic exploration and expansion of this exceedingly plain raw material through continuous variation, the composer demands of the performer an incomparable wealth of virtuoso passages, combinations of chords and arpeggios which had never before been thought of in this form. Here Bach opened up entirely new dimensions in the technique of the violin, but at the same time, and to an even greater degree, in compositional technique itself.
