hiGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH alpha Collection At a time of gathering momentum, ALPHA is rereleasing 14 seminal BAROQUE recordings This series brings together the finest Baroque recordings from the Alpha and ZZT catalogues: discs singled out for honours, emblematic artists of music from that period, recordings that marked the discography... This is also the occasion to discover or rediscover universally known works as well as world premiere recordings of rarities. In the framework of these rereleases, the performers have been interviewed and bear witness to their view of the work and their recording several years later, and their fascinating remarks are taken up in the booklets (all trilingual: French, English, German). Concerning the presentation of the discs, we have opted for handsome digipacks, the covers illustrated with photographs by great contemporary artists (all at Magnum) with a dominant colour as a guiding line: for this first series, we have chosen the queen of colours, that of the gods, kings, warriors, the devil, life, violence and death... Themes omnipresent in Baroque art!

LA PETITE BANDE - KUIJKEN, Sigiswald Heinrich Schütz composed the Musikalische Exequien SWV 279-281 for the funeral of his patron Prince Heinrich Posthumus Reuß 1635/1636. Of the three parts, which were to be performed during three different sections of the funeral service, the first part, in the form of a sacred concerto for choir and soloists, is based on the numerous biblical passages which, in accordance with the instructions given by the deceased were to be recited at the coffin which the deceased himself had designed during his lifetime. This part is followed by a motet for double choir based on the text of a sermon («Herr, wenn ich nur dich habe»), and at the conclusion of the hymn of praise to Simeon («Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener in Frieden fahren»), a choir apart from the main choir intones «Selig sind die Toten» from heaven, so to speak. With this composition, written as a commission, Schuetz created one of the most artistic and heartfelt works of mourning ever written in the history of music. For his recording, Sigiswald Kuijken decided on a soloistic rendering of the individual parts, thus attaining greater transparency. In the middle parts, Kuijken uses high tenors – no altus or countertenors – who possess the specific ability to sing the middle parts over the entire tessitura clearly and with good balance, contributing great richness to the overall sound.

Jos van Immerseel is one of the leading representatives of historical performance practice today. Alongside his great commitment to Renaissance and Baroque music, he has consistently broadened his view of the classical and romantic repertoire as well. With the Ensemble Anima Eterna, founded by him in 1987 and performing on historical instruments, he has set new standards with recordings of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Poulenc and, most recently, Orff. On the occasion of Jos van Immerseel’s 70th birthday in November 2015, the present box offers a backward glance at the time when Jos van Immerseel, as the winner of many international competitions and prizes, still focussed primarily on keyboard instruments. During the late 1970s the pupil of Flor Peeters, Eugène Traey and Kenneth Gilbert began his collaboration with the Belgian label Accent, resulting in a series of solo piano recordings with works of Clementi, Mozart and Beethoven which can still stand any comparison today. Alongside this purely soloistic contribution, Jos van Immerseel was also much in demand as a chamber music partner for Octophorus, the oboist Paul Dombrecht and the countertenor René Jacobs. This retrospective is rounded off with a final Accent recording from 1986 with Rossini’s «Petite Messe Solennelle» (in the chamber-music version), directed by Immerseel from the piano.

Rome 54 A.D.: Nero must become Emperor! Agrippina is intent on installing her son at the centre of power, come what may. When rumour reaches her that her husband Caesar Claudius has died in a shipwreck, Agrippina thinks her moment has come. And even when the news of Claudius’ death turns out to be untrue, she will not relent. She makes false accusations against Otto, who saved Claudius from the depths, and sows discord between him and his beloved Poppea. Will Agrippina emerge triumphant or will her adversaries manage to cut through the jungle of political conspiracy? George Frideric Handel wrote this, one of his most impressive works, in Venice in 1709, achieving with the tale about Rome’s great female schemer his first truly resounding success as an opera composer. Agrippina could be heard for the first time in the new critical edition of the Halle Handel Edition at the Göttingen Handel Festival in 2015. The performance was received enthusiastically by the press and public alike.

#happybirthdayjos

The supernatural drifts of the compositions brought together in this recording, served by the power and playing technique of Séverine Ballon, reveal unexpected facets of expressiveness in the contemporary cello. Fully engaged in the renewal of its repertoire, Séverine Ballon especially favours conversing and working with the composers, in the intimacy of the ‘sound factory’. Having initiated numerous creations to which this recital admirably bears witness, here she offers us a tailor-made programme in the heart of the compositional procès. Once again, what could have been likened to risk-taking allows Séverine Ballon to affirm, forcefully and with conviction, her artistic identity, her commitment and her very particular place in the world of the contemporary cello.

ACC24299 SCHÜTZ, HEINRICH - Musikalische Exequien

For this second recording in duo, Lucile Boulanger and Arnaud de Pasquale propose a journey to 18th-century Germany, in the marvellous setting of the Sans Souci palace where Frederick II of Prussia had established his court. This disc, reflecting the extraordinary conjuncture experienced by the court of Berlin under Frederick II, brings together some of the virtuosic works for viola da gamba and fortepiano by Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach, Johann Gottlieb Graun or Ludwig Christian Hesse and attesting to the results of fruitful collaborations between the composers at that court.

Vinnitskaya, Anna - Kremerata Baltica

ANIMA ETERNA BRUGGE - VAN IMMERSEEL, JOS

Anna Vinnitskaya has now joined Alpha Classics. Her first recording for the label is devoted to one of her repertories of choice: the concertos of Shostakovich. ‘When I performed the Second Piano Concerto for the first time at the age of eleven, his music seemed very optimistic to me. Only later did I understand everything else that is concealed behind the “façade” of Shostakovich’s music.’ [The Russian pianist reveals two facets of the composer’s music on this disc by juxtaposing the First Piano Concerto in C minor op. 35, an ‘insolent’ composition with a kaleidoscope of atmospheres and stylistic registers (Russian Romanticism, American jazz, neoclassicism) that constantly surprise the listener, and the more traditional Concerto in F major, which radiates youthful high spirits.] A pupil of Sergey Ossipenko at the Serge Rachmaninoff Conservatory, then of the great Evgeni Koroliov at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg, Anna Vinnitskaya won the Leonard Bernstein Prize, but it was her First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2007 that launched her career. For this recording, Anna Vinnitskaya is surrounded by partners of the front rank: the famous Kremerata Baltica, regarded as one of the most creative ensembles on today’s musical scene, and the prestigious wind players of the Staatskapelle Dresden. ‘Anna Vinnitskaya displays a dazzling, indeed Olympian technique, combined with a particularly bold aste for differentiating sonic textures. . . . Stubborn, virtuosic, possessive and possessed, Anna Vinnitskaya is a musician who never cheats. That was bound to bring her luck.’ Marie-Aude Roux, Le Monde, 2009.

Jos Van Immerseel is celebrating his 70th birthday with three important releases that will punctuate the end of the year at Alpha: a symphonic programme (Janacek, Dvorak), a chamber music programme (Schubert) and a set grouping the rereleases of his recordings of French music. These anthologies will once again demonstrate everything the pianofortist brings to the interpretation of the symphonic and chamber repertoires. With his musicians and companions from Anima Eterna, he has created a veritable musical troupe, in turn students, orchestral players, soloists... Together, they carefully select the most appropriate instrument to interpret a given piece, prepared to wait several months if necessary for the instrument to be ready before programming it. And together, they seek the sound and style corresponding to their ideal. The autumn of 2015 will therefore be placed under the magic of Jos’s fortepiano, the original colours of the brass section in Janacek’s Sinfonietta, the magnificent voices of Thomas Bauer and his schoolmates...

eNSEMBLE MASQUES - FORTIN, OLIVIER After a first disc devoted to Schmelzer, enthusiastically hailed by the critics (‘Editor’s Choice’ Gramophone, ‘Choc’ of Classica), the ensemble Masques, conducted by Olivier Fortin, returns to Alpha with a programme combining works by Muffat, Kerll and Pachelbel along with those of a composer who has remained largely unknown and totally forgotten: Romanus Weichlein (1652–1706). Benedictine monk, prefect and official composer of the Benedictine abbey of Säben, Romanus Weichlein left several collections of sonatas and masses as well as large chaconnes, magnificent works in the tradition of his compatriots Biber, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Pavel Josef Vejvanovský and Georg Muffat. In this new programme, Masques presents both ensemble pieces and others for solo or two harpsichords (the second harpsichord being played by Skip Sempé), always featuring the expressiveness, eloquence and profound interpretation for which it is known.

Alpha Productions pursues its collaboration with conductor Martin Haselböck and the Orchester Wiener Akademie in a disc devoted to Liszt’s transcriptions of works by Schubert. The Viennese conductor, a reputed Lisztian, sets great store by performance on period instruments (or faithful copies) as well as performance in venues full of history and of which the composer was fond. This volume, in the continuity of the ‘Sound of Weimar’ series, initiated in 2011 by Martin Haselböck, was thus recorded in Raiding, Franz Liszt’s birthplace. Music lovers who have appreciated the fantastic piano transcriptions of orchestral works recorded by Yuri Martynov for Outhere, will henceforth be able to discover transcriptions for orchestra of Schubert piano works.

ALPHA 300 / 2CD

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the publication of Primo Libro di Toccate (1615), Arcana is proud to make this reference recording of Girolamo Frescobaldi’s most popular work available again. Here, Rinaldo Alessandrini shows to full advantage his well-known skills as keyboard virtuoso as well as his familiarity with the madrigal repertoire of the time, so important for a proper approach to this revolutionary book, whose basic elements are the affetti and where rhetoric became the interpretive key. Two period Italian instruments are used here, making it possible to rediscover the colours appropriate to Frescobaldi’s music: a harpsichord attributed to Celestini – the latest research apparently proves that it is not by this builder and that its construction dates from around 1650 – preserved in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague; and the restored organ (c.1630), in the church of S. Maria del Carmine in Brescia.

The reputation of San Giovanni Battista – by far Alessandro Stradella’s best-known and most recorded work – has hitherto overshadowed the rest of his surviving oratorio output, amounting to a total of six works. Unlike that masterwork, San Giovanni Crisostomo (here released for the first time) was conceived for more intimate resources, but it expresses perfectly the modernity of the oratorio genre as it appeared in the second half of the seventeenth century. Sacred and moral themes are combined with political, social, and sometimes even erotic ones, while subject, libretto, and music interact with amazing boldness and freedom on many different levels. Masterfully Stradella presents the age-old conflict between lust for power and the vanity of life, using a wide variety of expressive means and a refined dramatic and psychological depiction of the two protagonists, St John Chrysostom and the empress Eudoxia.

In its history as a concert orchestra, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks has also devoted itself on numerous occasions to opera, under such eminent conductors as Rafael Kubelik and Leonard Bernstein. Chief conductor Mariss Jansons also maintains the tradition, for example with concert performances of Russian operas such as «Eugene Onegin». BR-KLASSIK now presents the 2014 live recording in Munich’s Philharmonie im Gasteig of the semi-staged performance of Tchaikovsky’s late masterpiece «The Queen of Spades». With great connoisseurship, Mariss Jansons has brought together a group of singers for this performance in original Russian who are all native speakers of the language, and very familiar with the work. They include Misha Didyk as Herman, Tatiana Serjan as Lisa, and Alexey Markov as Prince Yeletsky.

The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks has already performed Beethoven symphony cycles on several occasions. Mariss Jansons has now extended the cycle concept in two respects: with works specially commissioned from contemporary composers, who have contributed their own musical reflections on Beethoven symphonies, and by presenting these outstanding concert events on the record market as a series of live recordings. Following the excellent response from critics and audiences for the award-winning Complete Edition (BRKLASSIK, 900119), BR-KLASSIK now presents the symphonies on individual CDs. The first of these is the Symphony No 3 in E Flat, op 55, in a live recording made in 2012 in Munich’s Herkulessaal, accompanied by a work of the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin (born 1932). For his symphonic fragment «Beethoven’s Heiligenstadt Testament» Schedrinhas selected the devastating document – written around the same time as the Eroica.

900135 Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5 JANSONS, Mariss - symphonieorchester des bayerischen rundfunks The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks has already performed Beethoven symphony cycles on several occasions. Its chief conductor Mariss Jansons has now extended the cycle concept in many respects, with concerts from the Tokyo Suntory Hall with its excellent acoustics, specially assigned commissions from contemporary composers providing their own musical reflections on Beethoven symphonies, and also presentation of the outstanding concert events in live recordings for the music market. The live recordings of Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven were made in 2012 in the Suntory Hall in Tokyo. The orchestral work Fires by the Lithuanian composer Raminta Šerkšnytes (born 1975) refers to the «con brio» tempo marking of the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth, which can also mean «with fire» It was also recorded in 2012, but in Munich’s Herkulessaal.

This three CD Box Set presents the complete cycle of Brahms’ symphonies, as performed by the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of Mariss Jansons. It puts the finishing touch on the complete performance of Johannes Brahms’ symphonic works, compositions oriented around the creativity of his great role model, yet in many ways also forward looking and innovative. The beauty of Brahmsian symphonic creativity comes to full fruition in these live recordings from the Musikverein in Vienna and the Herkulessaal in Munich under the direction of Mariss Jansons.

Daniel Harding follows his first CD recording on the BR-KLASSIK label (Schumann’s Faust Scenes, BR-KLASSIK, 900122) with this live recording of Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. Counting Sir Simon Rattle and Claudio Abbado among his teachers, since 2005 he has constantly made a name for himself with spectacular concerts with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks as a guest conductor. In this live recording of 2014 from Munich’s Philharmonie im Gasteig, BR-KLASSIK presents one of Mahler’s most unusual symphonies. Its dark and complex score contrasts starkly with what appeared on the surface to be a happy and carefree phase of the composer’s life when he wrote it. The world-class conductor Daniel Harding demonstrates great artistic flexibility here; and with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, he encounters an ensemble that has been among the pioneers of Mahler performance ever since the Kubelík era of the 1960s.

Paul D. Miller is probably most well-known under his “constructed persona” as DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid. He has recorded a huge volume of music and collaborated with a wide variety of musicians and composers, among them Iannis Xenakis, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kronos Quartet, Pierre Boulez, Steve Reich, Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore and many others. Conceived as a reimagining of director D.W. Griffith’s infamously racist 1915 silent film The Birth of a Nation, Rebirth of a Nation, recorded with Kronos Quartet, is a controversial and culturally significant project that examines how “…exploitation and political corruption still haunt the world to this day, but in radically different forms.” Originally commissioned in 2004 by the Lincoln Center Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, Weiner Festwochen, and the Festival d’Automne a Paris, the project was Miller’s first large-scale multimedia performance piece, and has been performed around the world, from the Sydney Festival to the Herod Atticus Amphitheater, more than fifty times. “In an era where whistleblowers like Julian Assange and Edward Snowden have shown us that perspective can truly alter global events,” Miller says, “we need more than ever to see the context that early cinema offers us. As my old friend Saul Williams likes to say: Another World Is Possible.

CA21111 WOLFE, Julia - Anthracite Fields BANG ON A CAN ALL-STARS Haunting, poignant and relentlessly physical, Julia Wolfe’s Anthracite Fields is a lovingly detailed oratorio about turn-of-the-20th-century Pennsylvania coal miners, and a fitting recipient of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Music. NPR Music’s Tom Huizenga describes the piece as “...almost a public history project and a music project at the same time,” which hints at the work’s universal appeal. Weaving together personal interviews that she conducted with miners and their families, along with oral histories, speeches, rhymes and local mining lore, Wolfe sought to honor the working lives of Pennsylvania’s anthracite region. “It’s not necessarily mainstream history,” she told NPR shortly after she received word of winning the Pulitzer. “The politics are very fascinating—the issues about safety, and the consideration for the people who are working and what’s involved in it. But I didn’t want to say, ‘Listen to this. This is a big political issue.’ It really was, ‘Here’s what happened. Here’s this life, and who are we in relationship to that?’ We’re them. They’re us. And basically, these people, working underground, under very dangerous conditions, fueled the nation. That’s very important to understand.” Featuring the always adventurous Bang on a Can All-Stars and the renowned Choir of Trinity Wall Street, Anthracite Fields merges multiple styles with classical themes.

The title chosen by Paul Van Nevel to illustrate the programme of this disc is a clear indication of his intention: to bring to life the music that the Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664) would have heard in the course of a career that led him from Seville to Madrid. Bearing as it does the imprint of the Counter Reformation, the artistic production of this contemporary of Velázquez and Murillo shares with the musical repertory of the time the same desire: to make accessible to all the faithful the mystical ideas – albeit toned down – of religious figures such as Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross. Barcode: 5412217016692

“ReWrite of Spring” is a tribute to Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” – one of the iconic modern masterpieces of music with decisive influence on the development of jazz music. “ReWrite of Spring” by internationally renowned saxophonist, composer and conductor Lars Møller, is the first major project from his pen as director of the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra. With melodic, rhythmic and dramatic inspiration from Stravinsky, “ReWrite of Spring” spans transparency and ambiguity, virility and funk, exploiting the full expressive palette of one of northern Europe’s best big bands and topped by contributions from two world-class musicians, saxophonist David Liebman and percussionist Marilyn Mazur. While deeply rooted in American and European orchestral traditions, “ReWrite of Spring” is a vital artistic statement representing a creative voice in the quest for a personal big band sound. The work is the temporary zenith of many years award-winning work within the big band format. Previous releases include “Episodes” (Cope Records), which featured his “hit”, Folk Song No.1, winner of first prize for Best Big Band Composition at the 2007 International Jazz Composers Symposium in Tampa, Florida, USA.

8.226121 Thomas Kingo’s Sacred Song Books

The Danish Baroque theologian and poet Thomas Kingo (1634-1703) created his groundbreaking hymnals ‘Aandelige Siunge-Koor ’ to encourage the religious faith of his countrymen through domestic devotions in their native language. Today, Kingo’s hymns with their rich Baroque imagery are still at the heart of Danish communal church singing. On this release, however, Phemius Consort presents a selection of the most beautiful Kingo hymns as they were originally intended: as songs with accompaniment, here supplemented by instrumental music by closely related European composers of the period.

A treasure-house of the grand master of sixteenth-century musical calligraphy, the choirbooks of Petrus Alamire contain some stupendous and hitherto unpublished polyphonic works. Through the hand of the fantastical humanist that was Alamire – famous as a “guardian of the books” and as a spy within the most influential courts of the Renaissance, including those of Marguerite of Austria in Malines, Henry VIII of England and Charles V – the Huelgas Ensemble and Paul Van Nevel trace a portrait of this brilliant humanist in a programme that will take you to the very heart of the secrets of Renaissance polyphony. From among these gems that are the prestigious choirbooks, the voices of Paul Van Nevel portray The Legacy of Petrus Alamire through the Sanctus and Agnus Dei of such exceptional composers as Sticheler in an echo of the divine Josquin.

As a child, Martin Luther already received intensive musical training at the schools in Magdeburg and Eisenach. He sang not only in the school choirs during the church services, but also for wealthy citizens. During his studies in Erfurt, Luther studied the music theory of both the Middle Ages and antiquity and engaged in musical practice. Luther had an intimate relationship with the music of his time: He was an admirer of the works of Senfl, Finck und Josquin and wrote a number of melodies of his own. Luther’s pastoral and almost intimate text “Frau Musica singt” (Ms. Musica Sings) to the nigthingale – which embodies music, whose song sounds forth in praise of God – makes one thing clear: music also provided Luther with solace and a place of refuge. At his own request, Martin Luther learnt to play the lute whilst suffering from an illness in 1503. He not only studied the lute, but also the technique of intabulation, which is the arrangement of a polyphonic vocal piece for the plucked instrument. The present selection of pieces by Luther and composers from his immediate environment, performed here by the countertenor Franz Vitzthum accompanied by the lute, could have been performed at an evening of domestic music-making at Martin Luther’s house, although this cannot be proven by contemporary sources.

KARASKIEWICZ, Barbara Roman Statkowski was born in 1859 and studied with Rubinstein and Rimsky-Korsakov. He became a teacher and inspired a great many of the 20th century’s leading Polish musicians. As a composer his taste was for the late Romantic style; he wrote operas and chamber works but his large piano music output excels, sparkling in the best tradition of Chopin. Statkowski gave up composition in 1904, and wrote nothing for the next 21 years of his life, being devoted to teaching. His music is brilliant, melodic and catches the attention at once. Barbara Karaskiewicz graduated from the University of Music in Katowice, Poland then completed her Ph.D at the University of Warsaw. She has performed all over Europe and South America with a broad repertoire and is a champion of rarely-heard composers. Her affinity with the music of Statkowski is perfect. This is her fourth album and her second recording of several of the pieces.

Galina Ustvolskaya (1919-2006) is becoming a cult figure in her native Russia and beyond. A person of intense humility, shyness and introspection, her music is the opposite: dramatic, often aggressive, with pounding rhythms that make it totally unique. “Any page of Ustvolskaya’s music is as recognisable as a Picasso brushstroke, and as deep in cultural and emotional resonance.” (Andy Hamilton, International Piano). This recording contains her entire output for solo piano. Russian pianist Natalia Andreeva has taken a special interest in the work of Ustvolskaya, beginning her ‘life-project’ in Chicago in 2006 and her PH.D thesis in Piano Performance was based on the interpretation of Ustvolskaya’s music – she remains in close touch with the composer’s widower and has developed a special affinity with this unique soundworld. Natalia currently works as Lecturer in Piano at the Sydney Conservatorium, Australia and regularly performs and broadcasts both there and in her native Russia.

Vivaldi’s vocal and instrumental works with trumpet are not only very interesting from a musical point of view but also brilliantly written. This is the first recording that makes available virtually all of these compositions, which are still rather little-known and which encompass the entire career of the Venetian composer. In the first half of the 1700s, the aria with concertante trumpet was one of the ingredients that the public of the numerous Venetian theatres appreciated the most. Spurred by his innate curiosity for any type of instrument, Vivaldi has left us about ten very fine examples of operatic aria with trumpet. The oldest ones date from his Mantua period (1718-1720), while the most recent ones belong to the last phase of his operatic career (1732-1737). Inspired by an instrument that the collective imagination associated with the idea of war and triumph, Vivaldi shaped a type of writing that gives the greatest care for details and particularly brilliant, characterized by an original syncretism of vocal and instrumental stylistic features.

CDS7721 This is My Verdi NIZZA, Amarilli - MARTINENGHI, Gianluca - JANACEK PHILHARMONIC Amarilli Nizza defined Verdi as her “best friend”. And it is truly so, because although she owes a lot to Puccini – her “first great love” –, her international career took flight with Verdi. She came on the scene as a lyrical soprano, but with time and thanks to her solid technique and a wise choice of repertoire, she has developed dramatic accents and nuances and has become a true Verdi heroine. The Italian soprano Amarilli Nizza was born in Milan and grew up in a musical family as the fourth generation of professional singers. As a child, she studied piano before voice studies with her grandmother Claudia Biadi, who has been her most formative teacher. In 1993, while still very young, she won the “Mattia Battistini” competition and had her debut as Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” at Rieti’s Flavio Vespasiano theatre. Her agile voice and solid technique, together with fine acting skills, have granted her access to the most important venues and International Festivals, among them the Wiener Staatsoper, Fondazione Arena di Verona, Teatro del Maggio musicale Fiorentino, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Berlin’s Deutsche Opera, Moscow’s Kremlin Palace, Tokyo’s New National Theatre and Bunka Kaikan.

ES1020 DAVID, FÉLICIEN - Herculanum NIQUET, HERVÉ - FLEMISH RADIO CHOIR - BRUSSELS PHILHARMONIC - GENS, VÉRONIQUE - DESHAYES, KARINE - MONTVIDAS, EDGARAS - COURJAL, NICOLAS - VÉRONÈSE, JULIEN Félicien David was already famous through his ‘ode-symphonie’ Le Désert (1844) when his opera Herculanum was first staged at the Paris Opéra in 1859. This ambitious work, later to gain him entrance to the Opéra-Comique and the Institut de France, also played a part in earning him the Légion d’Honneur. Leaving behind the Middle Eastern inflections of his earlier scores, Herculanum is a remarkably strong composition (vast, intensely dramatic scenes), impressive in the diversity of its style (including Verdian influences) and its vocal variety (including the rare coloratura contralto voice often used by Rossini). There is also a fantastic vein, as made popular by Boieldieu (La Dame blanche, 1825) and Meyerbeer (Robert le Diable, 1831); but the supernatural is used here to serve an openly stated mysticism: the eruption of Vesuvius brings a spectacular, cataclysmic ending, signifying the decadence of the ancient world and the triumph of Christianity.

CDS7711/1-3 ROSSINI, Gioachino - Otello zedda, alberto - symphony orchestra and chorus of OPERA vlaanderen antwerp/ghent The second postwar period saw the beginnings of the Rossini Renaissance, so called because of the rediscovery and staging of a great number of Rossini operas, particularly of the serious genre, which had long ceased to be performed. The Rossini Renaissance corrected the misconception that Rossini only excelled in comic opera, when in fact Rossini’s serious output was not only of very high quality in general, but also extremely original. Otello is one of the finest of Rossini’s serious works, and indeed the composer himself thought highly of it. The opera marked one of the first encounters between a composer and Shakespeare’s theatre in the history of Italian opera. In its original version, the opera had a tragic ending envisioned by the English playwright, but Rossini later wrote a new finale in which Otello ends up believing in his wife’s fidelity and gives up his murderous intentions. This production, recorded live in 2014 at Antwerp’s Vlaanderen Opera, is based on the critical edition by the Rossini Foundation and features the original tragic Shakespearean finale.

A pupil of Fauré, Louis Aubert moved in the same circles as Ravel, Debussy, Koechlin and others and was considered in his day to be one of the most original French composers. With its evocatively impressionistic images of seascapes, the night and Spain, Sillages is amongst the most significant French piano works of the early 20th century. The intensely expressive and impassioned Violin Sonata is Aubert’s only large-scale work in abstract Classical form and the distinctive Feuille d’images is a varied collection of educational pieces. The fiery Habanera, Aubert’s most frequently performed orchestral work, is heard in the composer’s own transcription for piano four hands.

The sonatas in this volume all appeared in 1784, meeting the challenge of Mozart’s popularity head-on. Recapturing the impact made by the colourful figure of the castrato Luigi Marchesi at the turbulent and revolutionary end of the eighteenth century has been a project embracing an exhibition, symposia, the publication of scores associated with the divo and this fabulous new recording performed by Ann Hallenberg, Stile Galante and conductor Stefano Aresi. It has been possible, through painstaking work, to identify not just the principal operatic arias composed with Marchesi in mind, but also his special and astonishing brand of ornamentation and workedout cadenzas, developed in the course of a career spanning five decades. Possessed of a vast vocal range – some three octaves – Marchesi, called the “Apollo of his times”, was courted allover Europe, from St Petersburg to Vienna, London to Milan, Munich, Naples and Warsaw. He even rebuffed Napoleon Bonaparte’s entreaties to hear him sing in 1796. The Swedish mezzo Ann Hallenberg ventures wholeheartedly into the musical mind of this extraordinary star of late opera seria in a vivid recreation backed not just by a meticulous attention to the original instruments and the ensemble configurations as used by orchestras in accompanying Marchesi, but by access to some two hundred contemporary accounts of the singer’s music-making.

For many years Fabio Biondi has been investing Italian scores with his own form of imaginative and deeply-considered musicality, and it is no real surprise to find him extending his reach past the Baroque and Classical eras and into the early Romanticism with this Glossa release of Vincenzo Bellini’s opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi. Bellini’s masterpiece, first performed in 1830 – to Felice Romani’s story of love confronted by struggles for power – seamlessly incorporates large sections from a previously unsuccessful opera and, as did Rossini before him, Bellini calls for a mezzo-soprano in the male lead role. Vivica Genaux is Romeo in Biondi’s production with Europa Galante (made in Rieti) and she is joined by Valentina Farcas as Giulietta and supported by Davide Giusti (Tebaldo), Fabrizio Beggi (Lorenzo) and Ugo Guagliardo (Capellio). Fabio Biondi clearly aspires for his version of I Capuleti e i Montecchi to allow listeners to discover new details in and new perspectives on the musical score. In his notes he talks about his careful attention to questions of original acoustical conditions for an opera like this, how modern-day orchestral sizes are much larger than in Bellini’s time, the particular importance of score markings, and tempi choices.

98.043 BARTOK, Bela - Complete Works for Piano Solo Vol. 2 BACH, Andreas With this latest release (volume 2 of a projected 5 volumes) of his recording of the complete piano works of Béla Bartók, Andreas Bach focuses on Bartók’s romantic roots; those pieces that originated in his early period, and based primarily on the German Romantic tradition. These include the Funeral March from “Kossuth”, arranged by Bartók himself for piano, the Rhapsodie Sz. 26, 2 Elegies and 4 Piano Pieces. Andreas Bach has quickly established himself as a masterful interpreter of Bartók‘s music, with enthusiastic reviews praising the edition‘s success: “... a project, that when complete, will be the most comprehensive presentation of Bartók‘s legacy as a keyboard composer ever available. (...) Of all the recordings and concert performances of these furious, earth-shattering, primitive works known to me, only my Philips recording with Zoltán Kocsis offers these fantastic keyboard scenes with comparable nuance, and sense of drama.” Klassik Heute)

The Staatskapelle Dresden unquestionably belongs to the international elite of orchestras, so when the outstanding wind soloists of this vaunted orchestra, together with the Munichbased pianist Margarita Höhenrieder perform two special works from the Viennese classical repertoire by Mozart and Beethoven, the results promise to be extraordinary. And that is precisely what happens: Mozart’s Quintet for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and piano in E flat major, K. 452, and the Quintet in E flat major, Op. 16 by Beethoven seldom have sounded as fresh and rousing as they do in this unique formation. As a very special encore, oboist Bernd Schober has edited the beloved Andante from Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 for wind quintet and piano. Together, these six musicians have succeeded in producing a musical homes-run with this recording, with hopefully others soon to follow.

SEEL, Dorothea - HAMMER, Christoph The flute became a highly fashionable instrument in the 18th century, and CPE Bach used the its in his compositions throughout his life, from early works written in his teens through a fruitful period at the court of Frederick the Great to his time in Hamburg. His works for this instrument frequently betray the influence of Friedrich II, yet the distinctive traits of a composer as great as CPE Bach often surface. Again and again you encounter surprising twists and new compositional approaches. The sensitivity and expressiveness of CPE Bach’s highly personal musical language are beautifully realized on Dorothea Seel’s copy of a late-Baroque Transverse flute made by Jacob Denner, with vivid accompaniments provided by Christoph Hammer on a period fortepiano.

This most famous of musical couplings was of course - gorgeous! Hardly any other pianist has such a feeling for the hidden undercurrents of Schumann’s scores, and no other pianist can send the sparks flying from the surface of Schumann’s music with as much enthusiasm. A true discovery for the Schumann connoisseur. Joachim Draheim’s entertaining booklet notes are once again a treasure trove of knowledge that will delight both the Schumann scholar and the casual listener.

In this fifth and last episode of the “transfigured” series, Petronel Malan dedicates herself, following Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Mozart to the works of Johannes Brahms. Once again the South African born and by choice New Yorker convinces with an extraordinary program full of interesting works. Composers such as Lowell Liebermann, Ludwig Stark or Ignaz Friedman put Brahms’s four-handed chorales, tunes and works into a piano solo made mode. The world premiere of Brahms’s Haydn variations Op 56a, originally composed for the orchestra, which has been modified by Ludwig Stark, completes this diversified portrait of a composer. Petronel Malan belongs without a doubt to one of the well-respected pianists of her age, which is impressively proven by the variety of many international awards, she has won.

For his second recital harpist Sivan Magen performs some of the greatest French masterpieces written for harp at the turn of the last two centuries. Since the 1900s French composers have advanced the harp to new levels of virtuosity and expression, with growing technical demands. Caplet’s Divertissements features some of the most unique and perfectly executed writing in the harp’s entire literature; great technical poise is required to deliver the bold pedal glissandi. Tournier and Debussy established the harp as a crucial exponent of the dreamy impressionist style; its colours and sonority are key. A century later Mantovani utilises a breath-taking spectrum of attacks and techniques: furious scalic motives, nail sounds, bisbigliandi, and sudden, shrill fortes which makes Tocar a testament to the harp’s more virile characteristics. Schoeller’s Esstal is in sharp contrast; its delicate figurations create a more peaceful mood and demonstrate another side to this versatile instrument. The programme closes with Fauré’s Impromptu which makes use of harmonics, glissandi, cross fingerings and rich arpeggios.

CKD474 SCHUMANN, Robert - Song Cycles GILCHRIST, James - TILBROOK, Anna James Gilchrist’s latest recording for Linn encompasses three of the greatest examples of the song cycle genre. Moving away from English song into the core Germanic Lieder repertoire, James’s expressive tenor voice is ideally suited to showcase the emotional nuances of Schumann’s vocal writing. Liederkreis shows Schumann at his most lyrical and deeply romantic; incredibly Op. 24 was his first published vocal composition. Dichterliebe, Schumann’s best-known song cycle, is regarded as one of the finest in the German language, notable for its perfect pairing of Heinrich Heine’s poetry with Schumann’s music. A prolific and versatile recitalist James has frequently performed Lieder repertoire, most recently Schubert’s Schwanengesang and Beethoven’s An die Ferne Geliebte at Wigmore Hall. James will return to Wigmore Hall in January 2016, to begin a threeconcert recital series spanning two years, performing the Schumann song cycles Liederkreis and Dichterlieb.

Silver Bow sees flautist Katherine Bryan present a fresh view on some much-loved works, together with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Jac van Steen. All the works, originally written for violin, feature captivating melodies that Katherine believes were crying out to be explored from the perspective of a different instrument. The recording opens with Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending; this favourite from the classical repertoire is a perfect fit for flute, an instrument often used to depict birdsong. There are dazzling showpieces from Saint-Saëns and Sarasate plus Paganini’s 24th Caprice which features flutter tongueing (Variation 5), and pop tongueing (Variation 7). Katherine’s beautiful tone is showcased on works such as Kreisler’s Liebesleid and Massenet’s Meditation from Thaïs. This recording is the first of two which sees Robin Ticciati and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra present an overview of Haydn’s symphonic repertoire. Ticciati’s approach takes the best elements of authenticity present in period performances, but with the dynamic range, space, colour andlife that modern performance practice brings. Ticciati beautifully highlights the lines, clarity and shape of the music, a skill he brought to bear in his Schumann symphonies recording which garnered several five star reviews and accolades upon release. Always popular with symphony orchestras Haydn has occasionally been treated a little too ‘tidily’, but these performances are alive and excitingly fresh. From Haydn’s early period the Baroque influenced ‘Horn Signal’ has an almost Gothic tinged feel with highly contrapuntal elements. Comparatively, the first of Haydn’s famous ‘London’ Symphonies, ‘The Clock’, has its focus firmly on the future. Due for release in 2016, the second recording in the series will include three further ‘London’ symphonies from Haydn’s late period.

KOGAN, LEONID - BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - MONTEUX, PIERRE Firma Melodiya presents recordings of Johannes Brahms’s and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s violin concertos performed by Leonid Kogan. “No one has ever played the violin like that,” exclaimed Jackques Thibaud when he heard the violinist play. “Leonid Kogan doesn’t play the violin, he creates music on it”, said another prominent violinist Isaac Stern. Kogan’s artistic activities was incredible, just like the geography of his concert performances – from the United States to New Zealand, and his all-embracing repertoire – from Bach and Paganini to Shostakovich and Berg. Whatever Leonid Kogan played, his inspired artistry and emotional energy carried the listeners away making them give in to the power of impression and deeply feel a living pulse of each composition. That is why the violinist preferred live performances to studio recordings. There’s no contemporary violinist who would go past the Brahms and Tchaikovsky violin concertos now – nor did Leonid Kogan who performed them on a number of occasions with different orchestras.

ERMLER, Mark - CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA OF THE USSR STATE ACADEMIC BOLSHOI THEATRE Firma Melodiya presents a unique recording of Sergei Prokofiev’s last opera The Story of a Real Man. This work is arguably the least known one in Prokofiev’s musical theatre legacy. Finished in 1948, it was never staged in the composer’s lifetime (its “private” performance led to banning the opera and accusing the composer of formalism). Only many years later it saw spotlights, but none of the production lasted long. The opera, so uncommon in terms of plotline and musical drama, seemed incredible even for an innvator like Prokofiev. The composer who had brought to the stage the characters of Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Bryusov was carried away with Boris Polevoy’s novel about pilot Alexei Meresiev (he lost his legs as a result of a severe injury, but at the cost of unbelievable efforts and exercising he returned to the battle ranks). The main character is shown crawling from a shot down plane, in a hospital ward and mastering his artificial limbs at hospital. The dramatic concept of the opera is built on a frame-like sequence of short scenes set off with moving lyrical episodes. The musical language of the opera predominantly consists of declamation and recitative and is full of songful intonations. The only recording of The Story of a Real Man that now exists was made by the company of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre in 1961 and conducted by young maestro Mark Ermler.

Shortly after the second world war, the archivists at the cathedral of Tournai noted with regret the disappearance of a musical manuscript made up of plainchant and polyphony, written between the 15th century and 1602. It unexpectedly resurfaced in November 2006 and was re-entered in the cathedral’s archives and library. An inscription on the back flyleaf gives the work the title Libellus confraternitatis Transfigurationis Domini in ecclesia Tornacensi (Little book of the friars of the Brotherhood of the Lord’s Transfiguration at the Cathedral of Tournai). Various studies have revealed the exceptional interest of this manuscript in both its historical and musical aspects. The recording by the Ensemble Psallentes, directed by Hendrik Vanden Abeele, enables listeners to discover all the beauties of this jewel.

Schubert has been described as the last ‘classical’ and as the first ‘romantic’ composer, but it is really impossible to pin a meaningful label on him. He was and still is a very special case, a lonely figure in musical history, a dreamer who brought into music a degree of intimacy, despair, hope and disappointment previously unknown. Schubert was a sincere, shy and vulnerable man (though he did not lack confidence in himself as an artist) and his personality is clearly reflected in his music. Pianist and conductor Vladimir Feltsman is one of the most versatile and constantly interesting musicians of our time. His vast repertoire encompasses music from the Baroque to 20th-century composers. A regular guest soloist with leading symphony orchestras in the United States and abroad, he appears in the most prestigious concert series and music festivals all over the world. Mr. Feltsman’s extensive discography has been released on the Melodiya, Sony Classical, and Nimbus labels. His discography includes eight albums of clavier works of J.S. Bach, recordings of Beethoven’s last five piano sonatas, solo piano works of Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Messiaen and Silvestrov, as well as concerti by Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev.

The composers on this album range from the iconic John Cage to specialists working with new clarinet techniques such as Eric Mandat, via the great William O. Smith (also known as jazz legend Bill Smith). There is a lot of variety here, within the context of a generally provocative and avant-garde collection; some of the Smith works have narrative; two are extensions of works by Peter Warlock and Merle Travis, and in some Mitchell plays the Double Clarinet, a rare beast indeed. IanMitchell has become one of Europe’s foremost clarinettists, performing, recording and broadcasting regularly, and specialising in contemporary works. He is Director of the ensemble Gemini (with three Métier CDs to their name) and has played with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Michael Nyman Band and several other ensembles. Firma Melodiya presents a rare recording of Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca. One of the most popular operas of the world repertoire, Tosca was finished in the last year of the 19th century. It was based on the French playwright Victorien Sardou’s drama written for Sarah Bernhardt. The premiere of the opera that took place in 1900 in Rome was not accepted with much enthusiasm, and only the performance at La Scala under Arturo Toscanini became a true triumph. The story of singer Floria Tosca and her beloved painter Mario Cavaradossi who fell victim to bloody despot Baron Scarpia on the background of the revolutionary events in Italy of the early 19th century is still able to move to the innermost of one’s heart as the heat of dramatic fervour is masterfully captured in the music. Numerous audio and video recordings of the opera featuring the world’s best singers and conductors were made in the previous century. This recording was realized by the USSR Bolshoi Theatre in 1974. The celebrated internationally recognized soloists of the opera company of the 1970s Tamara Milashkina, Vladimir Atlantov, Yuri Mazurok and others perform the opera in the original language under the prominent conductor Mark Ermler.

DE GROOT, Niek - KLIPFEL, Catherine “I search for new frontiers in music. The double bass is a fantastic and unique vehicle! My goal is transcending my instrument. In performing, I always feel more a musician as a double bassist.’’ Niek de Groot is a leading classical double-bassist. In 2010 he found the supreme instrument to give his style voice in the A mati double bass made in Cremona, 1680 . Niek has been given the lifelong privilege to play this famous and only remaining double bass from that era. The style Niek has developed allows him to also use the double bass as an integral solo instrument. At the same time, in working closely with modern composers like Kurtàg and Stockhausen, he contributed to the development of new and contemporary double-bass repertoire. Until 2006 Niek held principal double bass positions in many ensembles throughout Europe. Among them a 10 year tenure as principal with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Since then he has dedicated his career to performing chamber music and solo performances and plays the Amati to a growing worldwide audience. From 1996 Niek has been teaching as a senior professor at the Folkwang University of Arts in Essen, Germany. He teaches master classes regularly, with many of his students currently holding positions in Europe’s finest orchestras.

ODE1273 bach, jOHANN seBASTIAN - Goldberg Variations VOGT, LARS Pianist Lars Vogt presents one of the classic works of the Baroque repertoire – Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685–1750) famous Goldberg Variations. Originally written for the harpsichord the Goldberg Variations, published in 1741, embody an Aria with 30 variations and a coda. Bach wrote the work for Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who, as the narrative says, often played music as a cure for Count Kaiserling’s insomnia. Apparently the work was one of the successes that Bach had during his lifetime and it was also published during his lifetime. Lars Vogt was appointed the first ever “Pianist in Residence” by the Berlin Philharmonic in 2003/04 and enjoys a high profile as a soloist and chamber musician.

The Cantigas de Santa Maria come from the imposing collection of the court of Alfonso X el Sabio, which offers us one of the most precious sources of mediaeval Spanish music. The Cantigas take us to the end of the Reconquista of the Iberian peninsula and to the very heart of the culture where Christian, Muslim and Jewish traditions mingle. These songs are interesting not only for their absolutely unique musical language but also for their Portuguese and Galician texts in which are combined poetry, popular stories and hymns, most of them praising miracles of the Virgin Mary. Starting from illuminated manuscripts that give us an idea of the instruments used at the king’s court, Hana Blažíková and her partners perform these works like a dialogue between two women’s voices, enriching it with two harps, a dulce melos and percussion. Whether using the whole consort or putting the instruments aside, this subtle interpretation has its source in plainchant and the music of the troubadours, with a touch of Arabizing ornaments and improvisation.

The «villanella» was originally a plain, three-part strophic song in the manner of folkloristic tunes of Italy’s rural population, intentionally simple in its manner of setting and usually with coarse texts. By the time Johann Hermann Schein had published his 50 villanellas of the «Musica boscareccia» in the 1620s, the genre had long become an art form. These «little forest songs» enjoyed immense popularity during the first half of the 17th century. Their three volumes were reprinted no fewer than eight times by 1651. Schein’s great success is particularly due to the fact that he understood perfectly well how to fuse the modern Italian attainments of his time with the conservative stylistic legacy of his Central German environment. In particular, it was the revolutionary Italian novelty of thoroughbass - the chordal accompaniment of songs by lutes and keyboard instruments - that made these pieces very modern and in great demand. Their texts, all written by Schein himself, are full of strongly expressive imagery, charm and wit. An entire host of forest spirits, mythological figures and gods whirl and tumble here.

ORC100050 BACH, Johann Sebastian - Me-Su-Bach

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber’s Rosary Sonatas (or Mystery Sonatas) were written about 1678 and dedicated to his employer the Archbishop of Salzburg. They are really unlike anything else in the violin literature. Scordatura, or unconventional tuning of an instrument’s strings, was common enough during the Baroque era, but Biber’s cycle of 15 pieces for violin and continuo explores the technique exhaustively: each of the 15 sonatas uses a different tuning. The result is music of fearsome difficulty for the player, and technical complexity generates spiritual intensity. Each sonata represents one of the Mysteries of the Catholic Rosary, which are divided into five Joyful Mysteries (the Annunciation …), five Sorrowful Mysteries (Christ’s crucifixion …), and five Glorious Mysteries (centered on the Resurrection and on Mary’s Assumption). As the music reaches its spiritual climax in the «Resurrection» sonata, Biber specifies that the violin be played with its two central strings crossed. Lina Tur Bonet is one of the most exciting violinists of the younger generation. She is accompanied by her ensemble Musica Alchemica, with which she recently made an enthralling Vivaldi CD (PC 10314).

ASHKENAZY, Dimitri - HAMBURGER SYMPHONIKER - CURTIS, David

FRANKFURT RADIO SYMPHONY - STROBEL, FRANK

Robert Stark (1847–1922) is one of those composers history seems to have left by the wayside – this despite the fact that clarinettists (or at least the professionals among them) will tend to know his name. The pieces on this recording are not only elegant, inventive and appealing, but honest music.

The film director Fritz Lang cast Gottfried Huppertz (1887-1937) in several of his films before asking him to write the original score for “Die Nibelungen” (1924), which he composed using the shooting script as a silent libretto. Huppertz wrote in a lush, late-Romantic idiom. With “Die Nibelungen”, he evokes Wagner’s take on Teutonic mythology through a highly lyrical and orchestrally expansive score that resists being imitative. The music echoes Wagner without attempting to mimic it. At the same time, Huppertz’s musical language resembles Alexander von Zemlinsky, Franz Schreker, Walter Braunfels and Eugene D’Albert. The present 4-CD-set offers Huppertz’s complete original score for Lang’s “Die Nibelungen”, in total four and a half hours of music, performed by the hr-Sinfonieorchester (Frankfurt Radio Symphony) under the baton of Frank Strobel, Germany’s leading film music conductor.

münchener rundfunorchester - chor des bayerischen rundfunks - schirmer, ulf As is often the case in the vocal compositions of distinguished American composer Gordon Getty, many of the pieces collected in The Little Match Girl are based on, or inspired by, poetry from the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. This SACD starts with “A prayer for my daughter” for chorus and orchestra, based on the poem by William Butler Yeats which is, according to Getty, “…one of the most admired works by one of the most admired poets of the age”. It is followed by “Poor Peter” for tenor, chorus and orchestra, with lyrics by Getty himself inspired by Poe and again Yeats. Then follows the titular “The little match girl”; the heart-breaking fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, put to music more or less word-for-word in a challenging setting for the orchestra and particularly the chorus. The disc concludes with “Joan and the bells”. This recording by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks was conducted by Asher Fisch and Ulf Schirmer respectively. It features magnificent soloists such as tenor Nikolai Schukoff (“Poor Peter”), soprano Melody Moore (“Joan and the Bells”) and baritone Lester Lynch (“Joan and the Bells”).

PTC5186488 Dvorak & Lalo Concertos MOSER, JOHANNES - PKF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIA - HRUSA, JAKUB PENTATONE’S ARTIST OF THE SEASON Johannes Moser

The latest flower to unfurl its petals is this SACD of Joseph Haydn’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in C major and his Sinfonia Concertante in B flat major. The pieces are performed by one of the 20th century’s leading violinists, Pinchas Zukerman, former Principal Cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Ronald Leonhard, oboist Barbara Winters and bassoonist David Breidenthal, together with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. These are outstanding performances of often neglected repertoire by the great Classical master, finally realised in the finest sound quality.

PTC5186398 BRAHMS / SCHÖENBERG - Brahms Piano Quartet Op. 25 NETHERLANDS PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - ALBRECHT, MARC Composer Arnold Schönberg considered it vitally important to study the techniques of other composers in order to thus penetrate more deeply into the true content of their music and he believed the best way to do this was by arranging the original compositions. And thus between May and September 1937, Schönberg penned an orchestral version of the Piano Quartet in G minor by Johannes Brahms. His first reason was personal: “I like the piece.” But the other two were more of a practical nature. “It is seldom played. It is always very badly played, because the better the pianist, the louder he plays, and you hear nothing from the strings. I wanted for once to hear everything, and this I have achieved.” In this regard, conductor Marc Albrecht and Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra prevail, with individual instruments and sections coming forward in carefully drawn sections. this album also features Schönberg’s own work, Begleitmusik zu einer Lichtspielscene (which translates as ‘Accompaniment to a cinematic scene’). Although the work reflected the customs of silent movies, Schönberg’s original score could not be used for film as it was not possible to adapt the music to the length of the scenes.

This album contains 18 of the 53 Mörike Lieder by Hugo Wolf, performed by legendary artists Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Sviatoslav Richter. The Gedichte von Eduard Mörike is one of the five major song cycles that brought great recognition to the nineteenth-century composer, Hugo Wolf. The 18 songs included in this recording rank amongst the composer’s most outstanding works. Despite Wolf ’s own regret of being recognised as a great lied composer, he developed the Lieder genre to its highest level. The undeniable influence of Wagner and, to some extent the “Second Viennese School”, is self-evident in Wolf ’s music. By pushing the boundaries of tonality and dramatic effect, Wolf was able to achieve an unprecedented level of tension in the Lieder genre. The epic collaboration between Fischer-Dieskau and Richter began in 1965 at the Aldeburgh Festival. Their great mutual respect has been well documented. According to Richter, their collaboration with Hugo Wolf ’s Lieder was the most creative and satisfying. These legendary artists bring their uncompromising attention to detail and unity of vision to produce musicmakingof great power and beauty. This re-release of the 1973 Deutsche Gramophone recording of the Mörike Lieder allows us to experience the work of these 20th century musical giants in an unprecedented way and to enjoy the Mörike Lieder like never before.

German-Canadian international soloist Johannes Moser recently signed an exclusive recording contract with PENTATONE. He regularly performs with the world’s leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, London Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw, NHK Symphony, Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras as well as the leading conductors of our time including Mariss Jansons, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta and Gustavo Dudamel. He has received many accolades for his recordings including two ECHO Klassik awards as well as the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. For his debut album with PENTATONE Johannes chose to record the pinnacle of the repertoire for cello and orchestra, the concerto by Antonín Dvořák. In this monumental work Dvořák explores the entire spectrum of human emotion, very much inspired by his own experiences, ranging from exhilarating bursts of life in New York City to the devastating tragedy of his unfulfilled love. In preparation for the recording, made with the PKF - Prague Philharmonia, Johannes Moser and conductor Jakub Hrůša had Dvořák’s own manuscript at hand in order to come closer to the composer’s intention rather than relying on unquestioned traditions and acquired habits, while paying tribute to the concerto’s nickname, «Dvořák’s 10th Symphony». Moser completes his debut album with the Cello Concerto by Édouard Lalo. It is a work of great verve which fully embodies Spanish flair combined with romantic spirit. Besides being staples of the Romantic cello repertoire the two works have a lot in common. Johannes Moser says about the two concerti: “The unifying motif between these two Cello Concertos is a sense of yearning: From America, Dvořák yearned for his homeland and an unfulfilled love, whereas Lalo yearned for the typically Spanish flair and the Mediterranean temperament”.

NEW CENTURY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA - HARMS, Dawn December holds in its hands many worlds of celebration as the month unfolds with Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas and the eve of the New Year. Over the centuries a great deal of music has marked this time of year, but very little has been added to the canon in recent decades. Gordon Getty inspired us with his composition of delightful new Christmas carols to invite a group of American composers to celebrate the season in music. The result is a rich and tuneful recording of new holiday classics for you to share with your friends and families. We hope that you enjoy this festive and joyous music throughout the season and for many years to come.

PTC5186542 Orbit HAIMOVITZ, Matt Orbit, a three-disc compilation of music for solo cello, all composed between 1945 and 2014 and performed by world-renowned cellist Matt Haimovitz, is the second release in the PENTATONE OXINGALE SERIES. In this series PENTATONE joins forces with Grammy Award-winning OXINGALE RECORDS, a trailblazing artist’s label since 2000 which is equally committed to revelatory interpretations of the canonic repertoire as to riveting performances of works by recent and living composers. Alongside his earlier 3-disc compilation on Deutsche Grammophon, Orbit establishes Matt Haimovitz as one of the most prolific exponents of solo cello music in our time. The album documents Matt Haimovitz’s musical journey since the turn of the millennium, together with his partner in life and music, composer Luna Pearl Woolf. This impressive solo cello odyssey offers the listener a fascinating kaleidoscope of musical influences from the past sixty years, encountering a variety of composers who range in musical style from vanguards Elliott Carter and Philip Glass to young, rock ‘n roll-influenced American composers, to the Italian avant-garde of Luciano Berio and Salvatore Sciarrino: a true 20th century Tower of Babel.

RAM1405 PHILIDOR / PIGNOLET DE MONTÉCLAIR - Fil d’argent, fil d’or labbé, marie-celine - treupel-franck, marion For this second recording devoted to French Baroque music for two solo transverse flutes, Marie-Céline Labbé and Marion Treupel-Franck perform the six suites by Pierre Danican Philidor (1681-1731), pieces taken from the three collections published by the composer in Paris in 1717 and 1718. Written in a highly original style in which one senses the spirit of freedom blowing over Versailles and France during the regency of the Duke d’Orléans, these short suites, in addition to the principal dances in vogue at the court of Versailles in the early 18th century, each comprise a fugue. A few brunettes by Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737) round out the programme. The brunette, a little rustic song with an evocative title, was a musical genre quite popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The selection proposed here will enable the listener to discover another facet of the work of Montéclair, the composer who was the object of the two flautists’ first recording.

Tchaikovsky defined the symphony as being “the most lyrical of musical forms. After all, is it not meant to express that for which there are no words, but which forces itself out of the soul, impatiently waiting to be uttered?” With these words, the composer makes us aware of the special nature of his symphonies. They primarily provided him with a musical outlet for the expression and elaboration of his emotions, his mental and spiritual processes. Between February 2011 and March 2014, PENTATONE released a highly acclaimed cycle of recordings of the complete symphonies by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, as well the Marche Slave, the Festival Coronation March, Romeo and Juliet, Francesca da Rimini, Capriccio Italien and the Manfred Symphony. All recordings are performed by the world class Russian National Orchestra under the direction of Mikhail Pletnev. This majestic cycle, with Symphony No. 5 selected as CD of the Month by BBC Music Magazine, is now presented in a magnificent 7 SACD box set. A wonderfully complete collection to fully enjoy the unsurpassed lyrical mastery of Tchaikovsky in optimal sound quality.

Following the requiem masses of Dvorák and Mozart in previous seasons, this performance of Brahms’s German Requiem would have been the third in a long series of Requiems conducted by Mariss Jansons. Unfortunately the ‘new tradition’ was cut short by Jansons’s departure as the RCO’s chief conductor during the 2014/2015 season. The performance was dedicated to Kurt Sanderling, one of the orchestra’s most beloved guest conductors. He passed away the year before and would have turned 100 that very month. It proved to be a very moving performance, a fitting salute to a great conductor

FLORES, MARIANA - REINHOLD, ANNA - CAPPELLA MEDITERRANEA - GARCIA ALARCON, LEONARDO The opening of Venice’s first opera house, the Teatro di San Cassiano, in 1637, was one of the major events in the history of opera. The protagonists of these new operas henceforth represented all the social categories making up this public and who, in fact, had to be able to find themselves onstage. The gods were no longer the only ones to lay down the law, challenged by the Vices and Virtues who preached in the Prologues. The new heroes are kings, emperors, dictators, courtesans, as well as nurses, valets, soldiers, philosopher, and, above all, lovers. Whoever they might be, we find them sympathetic or antipathetic; all are glorified, all are ridiculed. With his 27 existing operas, Francesco Cavalli gives us a fascinating version of this theatre of life. A single main thread runs through the excerpts drawn from each of them by Leonardo García Alarcón: the expression of human passions. They are all there, from ingenuousness to ecstasy, joy to anger, passionate love (and its erotic, sensual expression) to despair. This fascinating programme represents a new contribution to the knowledge of Cavalli’s operas and allows for unveiling part of the mystery still surrounding his works.

A celebration of Mussorgsky’s greatest orchestral masterworks, performed with panache by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and their Permanent Associate Conductor Grzegorz Nowak. Including a rare recording of Gorchakov’s orchestration of the ever-popular Pictures At An Exhibition - arguably darker and more Russian sounding in tone than the often-performed Ravel interpretation. Grzegorz Nowak has led the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on tours to Switzerland, Turkey and Armenia, as well as giving numerous concerts throughout the UK.

In 1994, RICERCAR released a boxed set bringing together nearly all the works of Guillaume Lekeu (1870-1894), this prodigious Belgian composer who died prematurely at the age of 24. Admirer of Beethoven and Wagner, disciple of Franck, and protégé of Ysaÿe, Lekeu had, in his last compositions, opened a new way that was neither French nor Germanic. It is to this journey that this new edition invites you, starting with the earliest works, written at 15, to the masterpieces of 1893. On this occasion, Jérôme Lejeune has completely revised and expanded the introductory text, which proposes a chronological analysis of the works. Listening to the compositions in this order helps to understand the way the composer’s talent developed, and the quotations from his abundant correspondence give an even better idea of the state of mind of this fascinating, highly moving young man who had put this simple phrase as an epigraph to his Adagio for quartet and string orchestra: ‘The pale flowers of memory...’

CAPPELLA MUSICALE DI SAN GIACOMO MAGGIORE DI BOLOGNA - CASCIO, ROBERTO The sacred-music production of Ippolito Ghezzi, an Augustinian friar who lived between the seventeenth century and the eighteenth, is collected almost in full in this box set containing the complete edition of his Oratorios, Psalms and Lamentations for the Holy Week. A fresh, inspired writing and a sober, but not austere style are the mainstays of the composer’s approach to the great Biblical episodes (Abrahm and Isaac, David and Goliath, etc.): the intention of this music is to reach the listeners’ understanding in a direct (and sometimes also dramatic) way, unfailingly guiding them towards a conversion to faith. The Cappella Musicale di San Giacomo Maggiore in. Bologna, which has chosen the safeguard of the sacred-music heritage (particularly the Augustinian one) as its most cherished hallmark, deserves our praise for the rediscovery of such an excellent musician..

SWR SINFONIEORCHESTER FREIBURG BADEN-BADEN - ROTH, FRANCOISXAVIER

NUFERINI, Roberto - CATTANI, Chiara

Richard Strauss spent nearly a decade and a half on An Alpine Symphony. The Work describes the impressions of a hike in the mountains with such clarity that the score could almost be considered film music without a film. The premiere of «Don Juan» in Weimar, on November 11th, 1898, was huge success. It established the reputation of the 24-year-old Strauss as the most important composer since Richard Wagner.

It is safe to say that Giovanni Battista Somis has by now been completely forgotten, despite the great profoundness of his works, which were rather highly regarded up to the first years of the twentieth century, and were included in collections and anthologies of famous violin pieces. This edition unearths his second opus, formed of twelve threepart sonatas, each characterised by an initial slow movement followed by two fast ones. These compositions combine the great cantabile quality of the Italian style with a sparkling virtuoso inventiveness, admirably interpreted by the violinist Roberto Noferini with the basso continuo realisation of Chiara Cattani.

TC650770 GHEZZI, Ippolito - Oratori / Mottetti / Lamentazioni

DUO D’ACCORD Bach, a poet? In our day and age, this statement sounds surreal, and seems to reek of nostalgia. How could it be otherwise? After all, nearly two centuries have passed from the time Schumann uttered these words, centuries in which a comprehensive exegesis of interpretation has evolved whose discoveries and principles are part and parcel of today’s Bach reception – headed by intensive efforts at keeping faithful to the original and the “correct” performing style, informed by a comprehensive knowledge of Baroque performance practice. From this perspective, the album presented here must appear anachronistic, since its music takes us back to an epoch in which Bach was played in a free, occasionally downright carefree, style. What no one would permit themselves today was modern back then: a sense of theatrical effects, an exuberant dynamic richness and a rather elastic perception of the metrical element, as was simply in accordance with the Romantic attitude toward life.

Total time : 70’01 1 CD PPD : 10,00€

The guitar of the young musician Davide di Ienno is the common denominator of this musical journey within the work of Raffaele Bellafronte, a well-known contemporary composer. Many styles are touched on by Bellafronte in his music: lightheartedly borrowing from various traditions of the past, he appropriates dance languages rooted in learned and folk music, ranging from the tarantella to the tango and waltz, and also pays tribute to exotic dances and Spanish music, symbol par excellence of guitar expression. The exploration of the technical possibilities of the guitar overlaps with that of the marimba, bassoon, flute and string quartet, drawing the listener into a fascinating musical journey interspersed with a great variety of rhythms, colours and moods.

The Russian-American composer Leo Zeitlin (1884–1930) was known mainly for two classics of Jewish art-music: Eli Zion and Reb Nakhmon’s Nign, published in St Petesburg by the Society for Jewish Folk Music of which Zeitlin was an important member. Zeitlin died only seven years after emigrating to New York, still a young man, and his reputation languished until the recent discovery of a trunk full of scores brought his music back to light. This album attempts to remedy decades of neglect, especially for his charismatic Yiddish song-settings for voice, strings and piano. Zeitlin’s powerful declamations – Romantic piano music underscoring spoken Yiddish and Russian poetry – points to a genre that once was popular and is now forgotten.

TOCC0254 LOPES-GRAÇA, Fernando - Complete Music for String Quartet & Piano PRATS, Olga - QUARTETO LOPES-GRAÇA The composer Fernando Lopes-Graça (1906–94) was something of a Portuguese Shostakovich: as a committed socialist, he faced repression from Salazar’s right-wing dictatorship; his works were banned and he was stripped of his official positions. Lopes-Graça responded in music, evolving a feisty, wiry Bartókian style that drew on Portuguese folk-music. This recording features Lopes-Graça’s own Bechstein piano, played by Olga Prats, who worked closely with him. A Fanfarereview of Vol. 1 in this series said: ‘the disc should be heard by 20th-century-music lovers: It introduces three of the most personally significant works of a strong, individual voice’.

HOWAT, Roy - SCHWARTS, Jared This collection of Fauré’s mélodies is the first recording to be conceived for a bass voice. It juxtaposes some of the composer’s best-loved songs with some of his lesser-known works. Going beyond the often arbitrary ordering of early editions, this programme draws out connections of poets and poetic themes, some of which restore the composer’s own original groupings. This is the first recording to be based on the new Peters Edition, which eliminates countless errors in older publications.

This is the sixth CD in the first complete recording of the 72 cantatas from Georg Philipp Telemann’s collection Harmonischer Gottes-Dienst, published in Hamburg in 1726 – the first complete set of cantatas for the liturgical year to be appear in print. Although Telemann wrote an astonishing 1,700 cantatas, 1.400 of which survive, this is the first cycle of his cantatas ever to be recorded in its entirety. The cantatas are designated for voice, an obbligato instrument (recorder, violin, transverse flute or oboe) and basso continuo, and generally take the form of two da capo arias with an intervening recitative. The pursuit of authenticity in these recordings extends to obtaining the correct pronunciation of the German of Telemann’s day: an unusual essay in the booklet details the development of German as a sung language.

The Danse macabre – the idea that Death comes for everyone regardless of status or importance – has fascinated musicians for centuries. In 2011, inspired by a vast sixteenth-century painting by Bernd Notke in the Niguliste, St Michael’s Church in Tallinn, the English composer Gregory Rose (b. 1948) set the mediaeval German texts which sit below each panel, turning Notke’s terrifying vision into a bleak but grimly humorous ritual. This recording features the world-renowned Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. It was recorded in the very church that houses Notke’s paintings and is conducted by the composer.

It ranges in mood from the folklike simplicity of the Missa Secunda in honorem Sanctae Margaritae and his bright carol settings via the asperity of some late a cappella pieces to the fresh and buoyant Christmas Cantata. This recording is also the first by the new London-based chamber choir Ascolta founded this year by Peter Broadbent.

The late great guitarist / composer Attila Zoller who passed away in 1998 is honored by his students and friends many of which received their decisive tuition at Zoller’s Vermont Jazz Center (which Pat Metheny thankfully confirms). Attila Zoller is today regarded as a liaison between Europe and the American jazz sce-ne, as a connecting link between the swinging tradition and the explosive avantgarde – and as an instru-mentalist and composer who successfully blended Balkanesque fire with little highbrow nonchalance and plenty of free jazz explosiveness to create vibrant music. The CD is introduced by a very personal message by Ron Carter (voice and bass) talking to Attila in wher-ever he is. Immediately followed by a burning Mike Stern quartet, a fantastic duet between Pat Metheny and Jim Hall and ten more great compositions by Zoller played by fine American and European guitarists. Zoller was a risk-taking expressionist, sensitively mastering colors, harmonies and tones and infusing every Jazz Standard melody with his unmistakable thumbprint. This CD will be a highlight of our catalog.

Franco Ambrosetti is the dean of jazz trumpet players in Europe. For over thirty years with the label he recorded with e.g. John Scofield, Mike Brecker, Daniel Humair, the George Gruntz Orchestra, Phil Woods, Geri Allen, Steve Coleman a.o., several of his albums have become modern jazz classics. In Franco Ambrosetti’s words: « “After the rain” is the title of this new CD with the intention to honor the deep influence that the genius of John Coltrane has had on most of the musicians of my generation. His infinite search for new ways of expression, the unorthodox approach to changes with the use of what we call “in and out” which greatly extended the freedom in improvisation, the intensive sometimes obsessive use of intervallic scales, has become standard today. His urge to innovate led to new combinations of sounds, different voicings and strong preference for modal atmospheres, including spirituality as basic inspiration for the music and its surrounding. This new musical adventure has a name: Coltrane Mood.»

ENJ9626 ALTER, Myriam - Cross Ways ALTER, Myriam - VARIOUS ARTISTS After her two highly successful albums for ENJA (ENJ-9451 IF feat. Dino Saluzzi and ENJ-9513 WHERE IS THERE feat. Jacques Morelenbaum) it was time for Myriam’s third production of her unique, sometimes joy-ful, sometimes melancholic but always Mediterranean tinged music. Myriam‘s mother grew up in Saloniki and evidently gave this background to her daughter, a Jewish, Turkish, Italian jazz melange always present in Myriam’s compositions. The ensemble was selected by the sound requirements it should provide, placing the accordion into a central spot which is greatly filled by Luciano Biondini, the leading virtuoso of his instrument today. Clarinetist John Ruocco fullfills an important soloist’s role as he did on the previous albums and bassist Nic Thys impresses with his strong acoustic bass foundation. The liquid tuba of Michel Massot will be a discovery for many as will be the creative percussion by young Landers Gyselinck who is making a name for himself right now in both the jazz and the avant-garde rock scene. Michel Bisceglia provides subtle, crisp piano solos and his arrangements support the compositions so well. At the very end of this exciting production Myriam sat down at the piano and played spontaneously a short solo piece dedicated to her old friend Mal Waldron, funky black music. Nothing could end this fantastic session any better. We all think that Crossways is her best recording so far.

More jazz records should be like Sophisticated Lady Quartet—relaxed yet focused, traditionbased yet modern, elegant yet conveying a sure sense of swing. The recording is so pure that you almost feel as if you’re eaves dropping on four musicians who seem completely in their element while performing, in a one-take environment, a set that’s evenly split between previously rehearsed arrangements and performances where they had one chance to turn a composition into a memorable piece of music. No splicing or editing here—just a live-in-the-studio recording where the mood, playing and sonics are so solid that that jazz lovers will wish that the mostly-classical label Yarlung wandered over to this side of the street more often.

For the launch of its DVD collection, Alpha is joining forces with Christophe Rousset’s Les Talens Lyriques in Rameau’s opera-ballet Les Indes galantes, his most famous work, here performed in its 1750 ‘Toulouse’ version. Particularly rich both on the musical level and in atmosphere, scrutinizing love ‘in far-off lands’ (Turkey, Peru, Persia and America), it responds to the infatuation with exoticism that tinged all the arts of the century. Rameau’s dance music is always quite suggestive, evocative of a movement or a pictorial atmosphere. As for the staging, Laura Scozzi brings her contemporary vision to these countries and travels. Filmed at the Bordeaux National Opera, this production marked the Rameau celebrations in 2014 and was unanimously hailed by the international press: «In creating an extraordinarily amusing and vigorous staging, Laura Scozzi evokes or fustigates some of the dramas and obscurantisms of our era with as much pertinence as humour. [...] It takes the presence and stature of a Christophe Rousset to impose the music and singing in face of the tempest of images generated by the staging.» Raphaël de Gubernatis, Le Nouvel Observateur

Smoke & Mirrors takes us on many journeys in this album. These are refreshingly fully-developed works, each very different from the others, each with its own story. As a whole, these pieces illustrate the breadth of contemporary classical music written for percussionists, as well as the flexibility and virtuosity of Smoke & Mirrors. We recorded each piece live to tape with no editing, to create the most lifelike performance possible. Take heart in Smoke & Mirrors, who actually play this way (and this well) in real life.

Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez can easily be considered the most Spanish of all compositions. The famous Adagio does not only sound from the church bells of Aranjuez, it has also been widely used in commercials, documentaries & feature films immediately evoking images of Spain in the listener’s imagination. The Concierto has also served as the foundation for Miles Davis’s Album Sketches of Spain and was interpreted by artists as diverse as Deep Purple, Chick Corea and Paco de Lucia, reflecting the all-embracing nature of this composition. Rodrigo at 90 is an intimate portrait of Spain’s best known composer. At the age of ninety, he has lived a life filled with as much tragedy as joy, but his music has maintained an outlook which is as sunny as the land whence it comes. The concert recording featured on this disc has gained worldwide attention for being a “reference recording”. Soloist is guitar virtuoso Pepe Romero, a very close personal friend of Rodrigo, who had composed many works for guitar particularly for Romero.

DVD 1: The documentary “Gustav Mahler – Autopsy of a Genius” tells Mahler’s real story, going against any romantic images we may have of the subject. The film is using documents drawing on the latest research and showing the unique sound, the colourfull orchestration of an exceptional composer and gives insight in successes, fanatism and hostilities as Mahler felt Mahler’s portrait comes to life through the places and objects of which he took possession: his conductor’s podium. The film attempts to recreate the soul of a man, rather than of an idol. Some of the most renowned conductors and artists of the last years are performing his wonderful music, amongst them: Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Daniele Gatti, Thomas Hampson, Daniel Harding.

DVD 2: Beside Franz Schubert, Schumann is the world-famous composer of the German Lied. Cycles such as Dichterliebe or Liederkreis are wellknown and most beautiful works of the composer. Thomas Hampson who is exceptionally passionate about the Lied and for whom song and singing are “the diary of our existence” is performing the cycle “Zwölf Gedichte” Op. 35, poems by Justinus Kerner and “20 Lieder and Gesänge” from “Lyrisches Intermezzo”, poems by Henrich Heine.

Smetana’s six orchestral poems – the most famous is “The Moldau” with its instantly recognizable melody and evocation of this great river - tell of Bohemia’s lands and legends. It is performed here by the Czech Philharmonic under the baton of Jirí Belohlávek. “Smetana’s ‘My Country’ had esprit, lightness and was most beautifully melodious,” said the Czech publication MF Dnes of this performance. “The result was an exacting performance in soft and lightweight sound, every poem following on, becoming more immediate and intense.” Live from the Prague Spring Festival 2014.

Our topline release for 2015 is this awesome program which may be the first ‘music DVD’ devoted to contemporary percussion works. More than that, it has been produced with amazing graphics and visual enhancements as well as ‘straight’ video of the performances thanks to the fine work of top Danish movie director Christian Holten Bonke. Mathias Reumert is one of Europe’s foremost percussionists, and has been awarded the DanishMusic Critics’ Prize for 2015. The program includes the most iconic of modern percussion classics, ‘Psappha’ by Iannis Xenakis, together with his much more recent ‘Rebonds’. Works by Henze, Donatoni and Ferneyhough utilise wide ranges of tuned and unturned instruments, while the amazing pieces by Jodlowski and Globokar use different materials altogether. We predict Jodlowski’s ‘Time and Money’ will become a classic and hope to license this and other parts of the video to arts TV and online services. Even for the non-percussion fan, the film is one to watch again and again.

An eagerly anticipated exhibition travelling from the Musee d’Orsay Paris to the National Gallery London and onto the Philadelphia Museum of Art is the focus of the most comprehensive film ever made about the Impressionists. The exhibition brings together Impressionist art accumulated by Paul Durand-Ruel, the 19th century Parisian art collector. Degas, Manet Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley, are among the artists that he helped to establish through his galleries in London, New York and Paris. The exhibition, bringing together Durand-Ruel’s treasures, is the focus of the film, which also interweaves the story of Impressionism and a look at highlights from Impressionist collections in 10 prominent American galleries. ‘Fascinating theories and titbits abound, and the way these canvases reflect light renders them newly immersive on the big screen. An enriching experience.’ Mike McCahill, The Guardian
