It was only on very rare occasions that the Mozarts, father and son, had praise to spare for their composing colleagues. Amongst the few about whom they spoke favourably were Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782) and the Italian Giovanni Marco Rutini (1723-1797). On this CD, the harpsichordist Luca Guglielmi and his ensemble Concerto Madrigalesco present works of both of these composers which bear eloquent witness to this appraisal. Mozart expressed his admiration for Johann Christian Bach, whom he had met in London when still a child, in a letter of 1778 in which he wrote that he loved him «»with all my heart and I have high esteem for him»». Together with his father, Mozart adapted Bach’s Sonatas Op. 5, Nos. 2-4 as concerti with accompanying strings, interpreted by Luca Guglielmi on a replica of a Silbermann fortepiano. They are notable for their graceful, cantabile style, felt by the young Mozart to be particularly worthy of imitation. Leopold Mozart was unusually generous in his praise of the then quite well-known Sonatas, Op. 5 of Rutini. Typical of these works is the varied treatment of textures and harmonies, as is the skilled use of contrasts – these, too, were elements that the young Mozart made his own. Guglielmi uses three different replicas of historical harpsichords for his recording of these sonatas.

ACC24292 HAYDN, JOHANN MICHAEL - DIVERTIMENTI Piccolo Concerto Wien ; Roberto Sensi, direction Joseph Haydn’s younger brother Michael (1737-1806) was also a highly esteemed composer during his lifetime; his works were admired by Schubert and Mozart. The life journeys of the two Haydns ran almost parallel to each other during their early years: both were choirboys at St. Stephan’s Cathedral in Vienna and were educated by the kapellmeister there, Georg Reutter The Younger. After six years in Großwardein with Bishop Adam Patacsics, Michael Haydn was taken by Archbishop Sigismund von Schrattenbach to Salzburg, where he was appointed court composer in 1763. Michael Haydn worked in Salzburg for 43 years, composing numerous sacred and secular works; these were not printed, however, which is the reason why they are not as well known as those of his famous brother. The Divertimenti recorded here are written for either a quartet or a trio – but not, however, in the later customary ensemble of one or two violins, viola and violoncello. Their varied instrumental colours give them a special attraction: alongside the string instruments just named, one can hear the English horn, oboe, violoncello piccolo and violone in variable combinations.

First of all, the solo performance with voice and viola d’arco, that cantare alla viola (‘singing to the viol’) which Baldassare Castiglione, in his famous Book of the Courtier (1527), indicated as the ‘more welcome’ way of performing a sung text. Secondly, the frottole have been selected and put in order forming a miniature opera with a Prologue, three acts, and Epilogue, shedding new light on the origins of opera. 93.314 SCHÖNBERG: Moses und Aron SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, Sylvain Cambreling (Conductor), Johanna Winkel (Soprano), Katharina Persicke (Soprano), Elvira Bill (Alto), Nora etrochenko Alto), Jean- Noel Briend (Tenor), Friedemann Röhlig (Basso), Andreas Wolf (Baritone), EuropaChorAkademie, Franz Grundheber (Speaker, Moses), Andreas Conrad (Tenor, ron) Schoenberg’s masterpiece in the twelve-tone system he developed was his unfinished opera «Moses und Aron», a vastly complex work based on a single tone row. That it remained a fragment may be essential to its spiritual message, for while Schoenberg never stated it explicitly, it would seem that he left this most ambitious project of his mature style incomplete on purpose. It is almost as though it would be impious to give a final and definitive form to matters so profound and spiritual; like the name of Yahweh they are ineffable. Even today, Arnold Schoenberg’s opera «Moses und Aron» is an incredibly intense listening experience. Whatever one thinks about Schoenberg‘s musical language here it finds an expressiveness and cohesion which the listener cannot escape. This is especially the case in this new production of a work which does not appear on CD too often, sounding wonderfully transparent even in its most powerful and loudest moments. Appearing in the role of Moses, the world-famous baritone Franz Grundheber delivers an impressive characterization of the prophetic/revolutionary.

93.315 DEBUSSY, CLAUDE : Orchestral Works Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR), Heinz Holliger (conductor), Dirk Altmann (clarinet), Daniel Gauthier (saxophone) The «Afternoon of a Faun» together with the orchestral «Images» are among Claude Debussy’s best known and most popular compositions. Both works show different sides of the composer: «Afternoon of a Faun» is a textbook example of musical impressionism, while about the «Images», the composer himself said that his goal was to “try to achieve something different – an effect of reality”. The scores contrast well with the two Rhapsodies: the one for clarinet, called the «first» Rhapsody, was sketched out within a few weeks at the end of 1909, while the «second» Rhapsody for saxophone was only completed and orchestrated after the death of its author. The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR) and conductor Heinz Holliger manage to bring out the evocative, dynamic colors and peculiarities to be found in all of these works with precision.

93.316 MOZART: Violinkonzerte 1-5 Lena Neudauer (Violin), Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Bruno Weil (Conductor) At age 15, the young violinist Lena Neudauer had already won the famous Leopold Mozart International Competition in Augsburg, where she not only was awarded 1st prize, but also took home the Mozart Prize, Richard Strauss Prize for the best interpretation of Richard Strauss’ Violin Concerto and the Audience Prize. Yet despite this spectacular accomplishment, she refused to be pushed into becoming another “child prodigy.” This well-balanced, clear-thinking side of her being plays a special role with her interpretations of Mozart’s music. We are reminded of what father Leopold wrote to his son Wolfgang Amadeus in 1777: „You yourself do not know how well you play the violin; if only you will do yourself credit and play with energy, with your whole heart and mind...“. Lena Neudauer‘s beautiful, pure violin tone perfectly fits the spirit of these less-than-virtuoso, but supernaturally lovely concertos, her sensitivity illuminating these works from the inside. She is joined by conductor Bruno Weil, an expert in the music of the Viennese classicists and period instrument specialist, who transforms the German Radio Philharmonic into an aural carpet, upon which the soloist can move with quiet expression and grace.

George Enescu was one of the most brilliant musical figures of the 20th Century, and by far the most important artist to emerge from Romania. He was an extraordinary composer, inspiring conductor, and a highly esteemed violinist. The cellist Pablo Casals characterised Enescu as «the greatest musical phenomenon since Mozart“ and Yehudi Menuhin remained a lifelong devotee, saying: “If you ask me who had the most influence and range as a musician, then I say Enescu!” Of all of Enescu’s works for violin and piano, the 3rd Sonata Op. 25 «dans le caractère roumain populaire» («in Romanian folk character» ) composed in 1926 is the most famous and stands roughly in the center of his work for these instruments. In addition to the two other sonatas, a dramatic sonata „torso“ in A Minor, the «Impressions d’ enfance» and some smaller works have survived. The Ballad, composed in Paris in 1895 by the precocious fourteen year old Enescu begins his work for violin and piano, ending with the nostalgic Andante malinconico of 1951. Two Romanian musicians, violinist Remus Azoitei and pianist Eduard Stan bring this multifaceted music to life with their gorgeous playing- and drawing inspiration - adding a personal touch - with their own intuitive understanding of Romanian culture, just as the master composed them.

Johannes Brahms’ “Ein deutsches Requiem» is a work of profound reflection, presenting the composer‘s most personal beliefs in a timeless form, overcoming all boundaries of religions and confessions and nations. This «Requiem» is not based on the familiar text of the Catholic funeral mass, but is instead sensitively and knowledgably assembled from text from the Old and New Testaments by Brahms himself. Indeed, it was not his intention to pattern his Requiem after the Latin mass for the dead, nor to proclaim what he felt were false hopes for resurrection. Instead, “Ein deutsches Requiem” is a work of consolation for those left behind. This aspect is particularly emphasized in Helmuth Rilling’s moving interpretation. Donna Brown (soprano) and Gilles Cachemaille (baritone) are the outstanding vocal soloists, delivering well-profiled performances that are perfectly integrated into the overall balance of sound. Together with his regular collaborators, the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, Rilling delivers a performance full of gravitas that effectively reconciles the themes of death and mourning with a transcendent sense of spiritual consolation with a sense of immediacy seldom encountered in other performances.

CKD464 Haydn: Piano Sonatas Gottlieb Wallisch Famed for his clarity of line and purity of tone, Gottlieb Wallisch moves from Mozart to his contemporary Haydn for his fourth recording with Linn. Wallisch launched his international career by winning the ‘Joseph Haydn Prize’ as well as first prize at the prestigious Stravinsky Awards at the age of just sixteen. He celebrated Haydn’s anniversary year in 2009 by giving a critically acclaimed cycle of concerts in the Musikverein, Vienna dedicated to the composer. Haydn’s famous London Sonatas can be viewed as the distillation of the composer’s entire sonata-writing experience; Gottlieb perfectly captures his characteristic humour, energy and spiritedness. Sonata No. 60 was written for an instrument of greater tonal range than the Viennese instruments of the day, with a wider palette of specified dynamic possibilities and pedal effects. With a striking two-movement format, asymmetrical phrases and unusual accents Sonata No. 61 was ahead of its time, breaking the limits of traditional sonata form. Often described as a symphony for the piano, Sonata No. 62 has frequently been praised as Haydn’s ‘opus summum’ due to its large-scale form, diversity of expression and its virtuoso requirements.

MELCD1002170 Vaughan Williams, Ralph : Symphonies Various artists «The name of this English composer is not yet well known to Russian listeners. Meanwhile, Vaughan Williams was one of the largest figures of the so-called English Musical Renaissance, a movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A composer, conductor, organist, folklore student and publicist, Vaughan Williams today Is mostly known for his large-scale symphonic works. The English composer’s nine symphonies sequentially reflect the evolution of his creative style (the first one was composed in 1903, and the last one not long before he died in 1958). Each of them seems to be a continuation, a development of the previous one (a sort of “chapters of one novel”), but neither repeats any other one in structure, composition, concept or music. Some of the symphonies are closely connected with national poetry (Walt Whitman), episodes from the English history or pictures of native countryside. Absorbing a wide range of sources realized in Vaughan Williams’s style – from old folk songs and religious hymns to musical impressionism and jazz – his symphonies are notable for expressive figurativeness and melodic resourcefulness, and open to any keen ear.

Lazar Berman, piano Once, being on top of his pianistic career, Liszt called his etudes transcendental (supernatural) – no one but him was able to play them. They seemed to be beyond the limits of human abilities. As time went by, pianistic technique took a great step forward, but only few pianists dared play the entire cycle of etudes during the subsequent 20th century. Lazar Berman, a greatest interpreter of Liszt’s music among Soviet pianists, was one of them. Born in Leningrad to a musical family, he drew attention as early as he was four years old. He graduated with honours from the Central Music School and Moscow Conservatory where he studied with Alexander Goldenweiser, won the piano competition at the Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin, and received prizes at the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels and the Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Weimar. Overseas performances brought Berman sensational success. “A real titan”, “keyboard wizard” said some of the reviews by European and American critics when they wrote about the young pianist’s phenomenal technique and brilliant virtuosity. His numerous concerts in Moscow, Leningrad and other cities of the USSR were no less successful. Lazar Berman’s performing art was imprinted on numerous recordings which haven’t faded for connoisseurs of pianistic culture.

MELCD1002180 Weinberg, Moisey - Sinfoniettas; Symphony N.7 The USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra, conductor Evgeny Svetlanov ; The Moscow Chamber Orchestra, conductor Rudolf Barshai Regretfully, for the general public, he stayed in the shadow of his great teacher (although he formally wasn’t his pupil; this is rather a matter of spiritual affinity, a common stylistic and ethical orientation felt by both composers). Weinberg is mostly known as an author of music to such outstanding Soviet motion pictures as The Cranes Are Flying, Don Quixote and The Last Inch. Meanwhile, he penned more than twenty larger and six chamber symphonic opuses, which revealed his distinctive individuality in a most complete way. Weinberg, who matured as a composer on the junction of three national cultures (Polish, Jewish and Russian), reflected achievements of the brightest music figures of the 20th century – Mahler, Hindemith, Bartók, Prokofiev and Stravinsky, in his own fashion. Throughout his creative development (Sinfonietta No. 1 was composed in 1948, Sinfonietta No. 2 and Symphony No. 7 – in the 1960s), the aesthetics of neoclassicism was close to him, which, however, was allied with high affectivity, deep emotional experience and keen perception of dramatic conflicts in the vein of Shostakovich. Weinberg’s compositions are performed by the USSR State Orchestra led by Evgeny Svetlanov and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra lead by Rudolf Barshai, who founded the first Soviet chamber orchestra and inspired many contemporary composers of the time to create chamber music.»

MELCD1002222 Glinka - Rubinstein - Glazunov Mikhail Kugel, viola - Boris Berezovsky, piano Mikhail Kugel. Unfortunately, this name is little known in this country and much better known in Europe where he has played concerts and given master classes for the last 20 years. However, in the beginning of his performing career in the 1970’s and 1980’s, he was considered one of the best Soviet violists. He shared the first prize with Hungarian violist Zoltán Tóth at the international competition in Budapest in 1975 (Yuri Bashmet won the second prize at the same competition). Mikhail Kugel combined a career as a solo performer with the membership in the celebrated Beethoven Quartet (in its last line-up), was a professor of the Moscow Conservatory, and later on of the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music and Dance. At present, he teaches at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent in Belgium. Mikhail Kugel has expanded the viol repertoire by making numerous arrangement of music from different eras for the viola. Some of them are featured on this disc. The works for viola and piano were recorded by Mikhail Kugel together with Boris Berezovsky, one of the most in-demand pianists of modern time, a first prize winner of the Tchaikovsky International Competition and an owner of Grammophone, Diapason d’Or, BBC and Echo klassik awards for the best classical recordings. The recordings were made at Kugel’s concerts in 2002 to 2013.

MELCD1002227 Prokofiev, Sergey - Concertos for piano and orchestra, Nos 1–5 Vladimir Krainev, piano One of the brightest composers/pianists of his time, Prokofiev reflected in his piano concertos the most recognizable features of his artistic individuality like in a mirror. Having resolutely deserted the romantic tradition of the concerto genre, he created a new type of it. The motive toccata style, a splendid technique of scales and passages – all combined with fragile lyricism; sharp grotesque contrasts – and a sunny emotion of life-asserting; a crystal clear form and pattern – and sudden twists of the musical “plot”… This is what a figurative world of these works appears to be with each of them being individual realization of the genre and never continuing the line of the previous one. People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Krainev is indeed among the best interpreters of domestic music of the 20th century. While a student of the Moscow Conservatory, he became a world-famous pianist after his victories at the international competitions in Leeds and Lisbon. In 1970, he won the first prize of the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Apart from his flawless technical skills and rich sound palette, Vladimir Krainev was notable for a bright temperament which often roused the artist to do bold and even risky interpretations (one of the Austrian newspapers dubbed him “a tiger of keys on the arena”). Vol. 1 RUDOLF BARSHAI Once the Moscow Chamber Orchestra founded by Barshai and a few other enthusiasts in the Thaw period became a new page in the history of Soviet musical and performing practice. Thousands of concert goers recognized the music of baroque and classicism in a totally new sound, and the Barshai’s orchestra’s records sold millions of copies competing with the best known pop hits. Their concerts also included contemporary music, but Mozart was the most frequently performed composer in the concert programmes and on the recordings of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. This record showcases one of the early Salzburg period symphonies composed by sixteen-year-old Mozart and a wittiest Musical Joke (Village Musicians’ Sextet), the composer’s neat parody of scribbling amateurs. The recordings of Mozart’s works were made in 1972 and 1973.

New Ondine release includes Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber’s (1644-1704) 16 Mystery Sonatas, also known as Rosary Sonatas. This set of virtuosic violin sonatas is Biber’s most well-known work. They also serve as unique masterpieces of the Baroque violin repertoire. In the present recording violinist Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch is joined by the Finnish Baroque ensemble Battalia. Biber’s Mystery Sonatas feature 15 rosary mysteries from the life of Jesus and Virgin Mary. One of the most prominent characteristics of Biber’s work is the use of various tunings, i.e. scordatura. Out of the sixteen sonatas, fourteen require the use of ‘mistuned’ violin. Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch is nowadays in great demand as a leader of countless renowned early music ensembles and orchestras, performing music of the Baroque and symphonies of the age of Mozart and Schubert. The recording features as soloists the renowned pianist Angela Hewitt as well as Valérie Hartmann-Claverie, who plays the rare electro-acoustic ondes Martenot instrument which, alongside with the piano, has a substantial role in Messiaen’s work. The Turangalîla symphony is a gigantic work with two soloists and is cast in ten movements. Above all, Turangalîla is a symphony of love, but also much more. After this, it turned out that not Perti, but Alessandro Scarlatti is the composer of this opera. The opera, premiered in Naples in 1697, is set in the city of Memphis in an idealised Egypt. The plot – as is usual for operas of this period – is quite intricate and complicated. Various love relationships and hardships connect the protagonists, with the conflict over the Egyptian throne being argued out at the same time. The arias are musically appealing, especially due to the use of a cornett (played by Bork-Frithjof Smith with virtuosity and beauty of tone). This instrument had in fact been long out of fashion at the time when the opera was composed, but its timbre is ideal for highly emotional, expressive passages. The countertenor Alex Potter interprets the female protagonist Rosinda in a lyrical, elegiac manner, whilst the soprano Alice Borciani lends brilliance to the role of Emireno with her flawless high range. The recording includes all the arias of these two figures, supplemented by another aria with obbligato cornett that was indeed composed by Perti, as well as several instrumental sonatas of Giovanni Legrenzi

The Parisian bassoon maker Jean Nicolas Savary jeune was considered the «»Stradivari of the Bassoon»» during the 19th century. His bassoons were in great demand in France and England, and instruments were built according to his models up until the early 20th century. It is all the more astonishing, therefore, that no Savary bassoon had until now been reconstructed – a gap that has been filled by the Swiss bassoon maker Walter Bassetto in cooperation with the bassoonist Lyndon Watts. A reconstruction of an instrument from the year 1823 can be heard on this CD; it is especially convincing by virtue of its effortless response and its nasally pithy yet lyrical sound. The extraordinary qualities of the Savary bassoon are particularly shown to advantage in works by Beethoven and Reicha, as well as two adaptations from operas of Rossini and Donizetti. The performer is the Australian Lyndon Watts, who was a prize winner at the ARD Competition in 2002 and was appointed solo bassoonist with the Munich Philharmonic at the age of just 22. He has been a professor of (modern) bassoon at the Academy of the Arts in Berne since 2005. He is accompanied by Edoardo Torbianelli, an established specialist for historical keyboard instruments.

CasalQuartett An ominous foreboding, blood in the snow, a corpse in winter ... These is the story of a tragic incident which took place near the court of the Duke of Hildburghausen in 1757, and forms part of the unusual credentials of a man who avoided a fatal end only by a hair’s breadth because he chose to play string quartets. In his memoirs, the violinist and composer Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf recalls refusing an invitation to take a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh due to a premonition. As a consequence, while Dittersdorf was playing first violin with his brothers in the court orchestra, a young man sitting next to the coachman on the sleigh ride was killed due to reckless driving. Dittersdorf named the celebrated composer of that era whose works they were playing that evening: Franz Xaver Richter, the Mannheim master of counterpoint and a composer of the most exquisite chamber music and symphonies. Recent research by musicologists shows it is safe to assume that those works were very likely the seven quartets of opus 5, which are now to be released for the first time in a complete recording on the SOLO MUSICA label, in cooperation with the SWR broadcasting company, featuring the casalQuartett from Zurich, an ensemble that won an ECHO Klassik award in 2010. As was the case on their previous two «BIRTH of the STRING QUARTET» CDs, this release features some almost unknown examples of stunningly beautiful string quartets played on four unique instruments by Jacobus tainer, one of the most-sought-after European violin-makers of the 18th century.

The label is maintained worldwide by Solo Musica. The Sinfonieorchester Basel is one of the oldest and most important orchestras in Switzerland. It is strongly rooted in the north-west of Switzerland and at the same time enjoys a more than regional as well as international radiance. The Sinfonieorchester Basel is always again demonstrating anew its excellent quality, whether it be in its own concert tiers, in the Theater Basel or in guest concerts at home or abroad. Since 2009, the principal conductor has been the renowned American conductor and pianist, Dennis Russell Davies. Honegger finally completed his Second Symphony in December 1941 and sent it to Sacher. TC470301 VINCENZO CAPIROLA : Compositione PAOLO CHERICI This CD is dedicated to Vincenzo Capirola (1474- after 1548). It is intended both as a tribute and as a testimony: a tribute to one of the most important composers of the Italian early sixteeth century instrumental music; a testimony to the transformations that the music language brings to completion in one of the most extraordinary and rich periods in history of music. Actually, in the very first decades of the century composers begin to write and publish specific instrumental pieces. As a consequence, instrumental music starts to emerge from the shadows of the medieval period. This new attention to instruments (such as organ, viola, harpsichord and particularly lute) produces a creative flurry of new forms and languages which will characterize all the following instrumental music. Vincenzo Capirola plays a leading role in this flourishing phase of instrumental repertoire thanks to his manuscript dating back to 1517 containing dances, ricercars and transcriptions of vocal pieces of contemporary polyphonists. His writing has a strong originality, especially in his ricercars which have an amazing breadth of composition in the alternation of conflicting moments (such as fast virtuoso scales and slow calm chord successions). Besides, his manuscript is richly decorated giving an additional value from an aesthetic point of view. Thus, in these pages we find a marriage of painting and music according to the Renaissance conception which cultivates and pursues the unity of arts.

TC841908 GIOVANNI SGAMBATI: Piano Concerto; Orchestral Works FRANCESCO CARAMIELLO The Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra in sol minore op. 15 was composed between 1878 and 1880, and is the first work of this kind in Italy in the second half of the nineteenth century. In the monumental structure of this concerto, which is divided as usual into three movements, the piano writing, which attains the utmost degree of masterly inventiveness, is placed at the service of a fully symphonic form. So in this work, Sgambati showed that his vocation was that of symphonist (this vocation, which he had already revealed in advance with two overtures, Cola di Rienzo, 1866, and Ouverture festosa, 1878, would later be confirmed by him with three subsequent symphonies): the prolonged orchestra sections of the first movement, and the perfect integration between the piano and the orchestra in the final movement, demonstrate it. The overture for Pietro Cossa’s Cola di Rienzo is one of Sgambati’s first symphonic works (together with the Sinfonia Festosa and some short pieces such as Scherzo-Valzer and Marcia-Inno: the composer’s transcriptions for piano for four hands of Sinfonia festosa and Marcia-Inno are included respectively in the seventh and second volume of his Complete Piano Works). The CD ends with a transcription: Jules Massenet’s small-orchestra instrumentation of Berceuse-Rêverie, second piece of Trois Morceaux op. 42, the last collection of piano pieces composed by Sgambati and published in 1909 (included in the second volume of his Complete Piano Works).

TC862720 MARCO ENRICO BOSSI : Complete Organ Works, Vol. 10 ANDREA MACINANTI Marco Enrico Bossi (Born Salò, 1861 - died at sea between New York and Le Havre, 1925), studied at the Milan Conservatory under Polibio Fumagalli (organ), Francesco Sangalli (piano), Carlo Boniforti, Cesare Dominiceti and Amilcare Ponchielli (composition). He was appointed organist and maestro di cappella at Como Cathedral (1881-1889), taught the organ at the Naples Conservatory (18901895) and was director of the Conservatories and taught composition in Venice (1895-1902), Bologna (1902‑1911) and Roma (1916-1923). Bossi was a famous performer, composer and teacher (he reorganised the syllabuses of the Conservatories), and was the first internationally famous Italian concert artist. He was conferred the highest ranks in the Kingdom, became an honorary member of the most prestigious foreign and Italian Academies and enjoyed the esteem and friendship of great musicians and men of letters. Amongst these there were Giuseppe Verdi - who wrote from Busseto: «...it goes without saying that all your compositions are written with great mastery...» as well as Arrigo Boito, Giacomo Puccini, Jules Massenet, Camille Saint-Saëns, Giovanni Pascoli and Gabriele D’Annunzio. This recording is based on the critical edition of the Complete Organ Works by Marco Enrico Bossi published by Carrara (Bergamo), whose editorial committee is made up of Andrea Macinanti, Francesco Tasini, Luca Salvadori, Wijnand van de Pol. It has been chosen to use instruments built during Bossi’s lifetime by organ-builders he thought highly of, using organs built at the time the recorded pieces were composed.

Quatuor Debussy/Nordmann/Masset/Yann Dubost Debussy and Caplet... This well-known pairing brings together master and disciple in a shared aesthetic. The Debussy Quartet had long wanted to re-record the Quartet by the composer whose patronymic they bear. Here then is a sensitive reading that straightaway joins the major versions. For the Danses, they accompany the great Marielle Nordmann. And we again find Marielle Nordmann for Caplet’s masterpiece, the Conte fantastique (after Poe), along with the lesser-known Prières sung by Françoise Masset. It is clear that we have here an exceptionally fine CD, to take its place alongside the Lekeu anthology recorded for Timpani four years ago.

In addition to Escales, Angélique, the Flute Concerto, Chansons de Don Quichotte and a few other works always mentioned, there is a rich, little-known catalogue. This disc presents the quasi-totality of his works for winds. Along with composers such as Pierné and Gaubert, Ibert shared the gift of constantly renewed melodic invention, an outpouring of ideas that are always felicitous. These scores pour new life into this repertoire, from the Capriccio, combining winds and strings — including the violin of concert artist Alexandra Soum —, to the Concerto for Cello and 10 Wind Instruments, with its original scoring, by way of the trio, quartet and quintet for winds, and the troubling Stèles orientées (on poems by Victor Segalen) for voice and lute. This is the fourth album by the now-renowned Ensemble Initium, joined here by a few stars: the mezzo Karine Deshayes, cellist Henri Demarquette for what is doubtless one of the most masterful versions of this Concerto, and a newcomer in the person of the young conductor Clément Mao-Takacs, founder and director of the Secession Orchestra, of which this is one of the very first discs.

To celebrate the 150th birthday of Richard Strauss, TwoPianists Records is proud to introduce a new, authoritative, 9-disc set of the complete works for voice and piano by Strauss – a seminal collection that is set to become the reference standard for these vocal masterpieces, not least because of the inclusion of the first ever recordings of two Strauss songs: “Aus der Kindheit” and “Herbstabend,” TrV226. Under the artistic guidance of renowned mezzo-soprano, Strauss expert and stage director Brigitte Fassbaender, the project brings together 13 singers, handpicked by Fassbaender, to record the 179 extant songs and two melodramas that comprise Strauss’s oeuvre for voice and piano. Praised for their performances on the opera stage and in the concert hall, these German speaking singers, the majority of whom are notable Strauss interpreters, have more than done justice to the varying interpretive styles required by the songs. Presented in chronological order, the collection makes for a fascinating aural experience and listeners will be intrigued by Strauss’s musical development: from his first song, composed at the age of 6 with his mother’s help in writing in the text, to the final song, “Malven”, composed at the age of 84 during the last year of his life. A further distinguishing factor of the present recording, is that every effort has been made to remain true to Strauss’s original intentions, with each song (in its original key) being matched to the correct voice type.

His current ensemble features two of contemporary New Yorks hottest saxophonists, Donny McCaslin and John Jenkins. Each new album by Alon Nechushtan offers a fresh glimpse at his diverse and complex musical personality, which seems to be able to encompass a vast, cross-genre richness, which eventually becomes his very own. The most amazing quality of his is that he always sounds as if he already played this or that specific sub-genre for years, whereas in fact a comprehensive knowledge of his output so far reveals that he is probably one of the most chameleonic Jazz musicians around.

ENJ9609 KONITZ: Standards Live Lee Konitz, alto saxophone; Florian Weber, piano ; Jeff Denson, bass ; Ziv Ravitz, drums The Great American Song Book has been in focus of alto saxophone legend Lee Konitz for most of his improviser’s life. For years he returns on stage or studios to the great standards constantly exploring the harmonic and rhythmic structures, never repeating himself in his solo work. At the Vanguard recording session he made it a point to nearly disguise the melody and let the audience guess which standard he actually improvised on – kind of testing the musical qualities of the listeners who had great fun in this game. Some songs were played quite straight ahead, others were more difficult to decipher. It became immediately evident what great material he had picked to improvise upon. This approach did not only work perfectly well for Lee but for his colleagues as well. German pianist Pianist Florian Weber, US bassist Jeff Denson and Israeli drummer Ziv Ravitz felt fully at home with Lee’s demanding concept and used the freedom it gave them to fascinating results. He was so impressed by this international trio that he called their association THE NEW LEE KONITZ QUARTET, pointing out that he hadn’t had his own regular group for decades. The band now works on and off with Lee Konitz in Europe, the US and Japan.

Daniel Schnyder, Soprano Saxophone; Stefan Schultz, Bass Posaune ; Mark Feldman, Violin The CD HAENDEL IN HARLEM deals with a fictitious trip by G.F. Haendel to Manhattan. Although Haendel is one of the best known and most often performed composers in America, he never visited the New World. Because of his frequent use of syncopation and polyrhythmic structures his rhythmic language turns out to be very ‘transatlantic’. The accdents in his music constantly shift and very often hide the underlying meter he particular piece is written in. The bar lines only serve as a general point of orientation. Hence Haendel’s musical language is kind of ‘jazzy’ and has in many parts an improvisational character. He was a brilliant improviser and knew how to embellish the music on the spot., coming up with spontaneous and reinventions of a given piece of music ever time he played it. You can feel the freedom in his music. Beethoven praised Haendel as the greatest of all composers. He was deeply moved by the emotional power in Haendel’ music. It is this aspect, the emotional, improvisational and spontaneous quality of Haendel’s music we try to explore.
