^menu LA BOZ GALANA was created in 2011 in Basel, Switzerland, by singers and instrumentalists from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and France. The ensemble is particularly dedicated to the interpretation of Renaissance and Baroque Iberian and Latin-American repertoire. Recently they have been combining musical projects with research on the relationship of these musical styles with poetry and literature. The ensemble’s name (‘the gallant voice’) uses the orthography of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; it’s an expression that could be used in poems to describe a song beautifully sung or a text gallantly proclaimed.

The ensemble has performed mostly in France and Switzerland (Concerts du Conservatoire de Nantes, Festival Vochora, Festival du Mont Blanc, Festival de Froville, Les Goûts réunis, and Les Musicales de Redon, among others), and more recently in Colombia. Their first CD, with villancicos and motets by the Spanish composer Matías Durango, was released in 2015.

LA BOZ GALANA wurde 2011 in Basel von Sängern und Instrumentalisten aus Brasilien, Chile, Frankreich und Kolumbien gegründet. Das Ensemble widmet sich insbesondere der Interpretation des Renaissance- und Barockrepertoires der iberischen Halbinsel und Lateinamerikas. In jüngster Zeit sind musikalische Programme entstanden, die auf der Forschung über die Beziehung dieser Repertoires mit Dichtung und Literatur basieren. Der Ensemblename („Die galante Stimme“) benutzt die Orthographie des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts und ist ein Ausdruck, der in zeitgenössischen Gedichten ein schön gesungenes Lied oder ein stilvoll deklamiertes Gedicht beschreibt.

Das Ensemble ist vornehmlich in Frankreich und der Schweiz aktiv (Concerts du Conservatoire de Nantes, Festival Vochora, Festival du Mont Blanc, Festival de Froville, Les Goûts réunis, Les Musicales de Redon u.a.), sowie in jüngster Zeit auch in Kolumbien. Eine erste CD mit villancicos und Motetten des spanischen Komponisten Matías Durango ist 2015 erschienen.

LA BOZ GALANA a été fondé à Bâle en 2011 par des chanteurs et des instrumentistes originaires du Brésil, du Chili, de Colombie et de France. L’ensemble se concentre en particulier sur l’interprétation du répertoire de la Renaissance et du baroque ibérique et latino-américain. Récemment, il a concilié ses projets musicaux avec des recherches sur les relations qu’entretiennent ces styles avec la poésie et la littérature. « La Boz Galana » (« la voix galante ») est une expression – dans l’orthographe des XVIe et XVIIe siècles – que l’on trouve dans certains poèmes qui décrit une chanson magnifiquement interprétée ou un texte déclamé avec galanterie.

^menu guitar was often used by composers and publishers as a smart means of selling the works to amateurs. These relatively untrained musicians did not always know how to read music and they bought the publications for their own enjoyment. So with the help of the alfabeto they were able to play and sing at whatever the level of their capabilities was. The guitar was undeniably the ideal instrument to accompany these amateur singers, for it was relatively easy to play, compared to the lute or the harpsichord, and it was less expensive to purchase.

D’AMOR MORMORA IL VENTO Early seventeenth-century Italy was one of Europe’s most active regions artistically and culturally, experiencing a decisive moment with the creation of a new musical genre which later would establish itself as what today we call opera. At the same time, in squares, homes and palaces, musical activities in intimate domestic and courtly circles formed the perfect setting for social gatherings. Here, poetry, songs and dances, usually transmitted orally, together formed the recurring ‘soundtrack’ for those who attended.

These publications were the result of a centuriesold practice – the repertoires of frottole and strambotti, for example – in which composers created a more ‘popular’ genre based on the imitation of popular musical forms, and using poetic texts related to them. We might compare this genre, anachronistically, with the German lied, the mélodie in France or English art songs. While in Italy we find many examples of this type of song, in Spain this music was seldom written down, and more seldom still printed. That the alfabeto della chitarra alla spagnola existed in Italy reveals that the practice of accompaniment, found in places like Naples, Rome and Milan, was due to the presence there of Spanish musicians for the previous two centuries. At the time of the emergence of these publications there was a significant number of poetic manuscripts – for example, the Duke of Alba’s Canzionere, which was in the possession of the singer Adriana Basile – which, although they include no written music, seem to have been annotated as a result of their sung transmission and the circulation of the poems (in Italian or its dialects, and in Span-

In Italy, printing presses dedicated to poetry, literature, science, religion, and, of course, music, flourished like floral gardens. Their principal headquarters were in cities such as Venice, Rome and Milan. The works of composers from all over Europe, commissioned by aristocrats and patrons, and spanning every type of musical repertoire, were published there for the rest of the world, thus becoming an effective centre for dissemination and sales. Besides the favoured collections of madrigals, we found collections of short songs on several occasions – canzonette, villanelle, scherzi, etc. – which include compositions based on poetic texts and musical patterns, or arrangements of songs which would have been familiar to music-lovers. These collections include announcements, almost like publicity advertisements, of an alfabeto della chitarra alla spagnola, in other words, the accompanying guitar chords annotated with fingering positions. on courtly dances, such as the gallarda, with more sophisticated harmonies and more elaborate texts and poetical meters. The vocal style of these pieces, due to their very nature and context, is not intended to show off the vocal abilities of the singer. Instead, it is usually syllabic and matches the prosodic rhythm of the texts with melodies and musical phrases which, although on occasion stress unaccented syllables, generally support and emphasize the rhyming schemes and poetic forms.

Together with some instrumental dances from collections for guitar or keyboard solo – on this occasion played on the harp – we here follow an itinerary of the chords, melodies and poems from collections printed with alfabeto by Italian composers. These include those by the renowned harpist Stefano Landi and the naturalized Italian Girolamo Kapsberger, published in Rome by the distinguished publishing house of Giovanni Battista Robletti. From this same publisher, we have also included some pieces by the Spaniard active in Italy Juan de Arañés, who worked for the Ambassador of the Spanish court in Rome in the 1620s. Completing the vocal works are pieces by a lesser-known composer, Carlo Milanuzzi, and a few songs collected by Giovanni Stefani. Most of the songs on this programme are strophic (villanelle, canzonette, romances, letrillas, etc.) and reflect the use of texts of popular origin. Among the poetic topics of these texts we find such varied personages as a wounded Venus, a crying Cupid, dancing shepherds and sun-drenched maidens on the banks of rivers; personages which reflect the recurring amorous themes and their corresponding mythological, bucolic and even comic or erotic settings. These pieces show a marked influence of the sung dances of Iberian origin, generally in ternary rhythms, such as the folía and the españoleta, and even in some cases a Latin American origin, as in the case of the chacona – generally related to profligacy, the pleasures and the good life. In contrast, there are songs of a more cultured nature based

Poetry is the raison d’être and backbone of these songs and sung dances, for their forms and musical structures are determined by the different poetic genres on which they are constructed. In the case of the works in Spanish, the most common are the romances, which use octosyllabic verses, and the letrillas, which in the seventeenth century usually alternated octosyllabic and hexasyllabic verses with an estribillo – what in popular music is known as a ‘refrain’ – thereby resulting, in many cases, in seguidilla verses (alternating verses of 6 or 7 syllables, the even-numbered ones of 5 syllables). This practice is particularly clear in the pieces by Arañés, in which the musical development occurs in the refrains by means of rhetorical-musical devices, rhythmic invention and text repetition. On the other hand, the coplas – that is to say, the stanzas – bear the full action and the weight of the poetic text. In the case of the pieces in Italian, the influence of the texts on the construction of the musical phrasing is even more evident: Verses of distinct meters, generally with a consonant rhyming scheme, are alternated within the same poem, the different meters determining the prosody and musical 7

^menu rhythm. The result is apparently irregular forms which complement each other thanks to the musical logic.

Gabriello Chiabrera, which give the name to this programme; by way of phonetic and rhetorical means, in one scene they portray– alla Botticelli – the movement of the wind and the to and fro of the waves: “Qui trascorre onda d’argento / qui d’amor mormora il vento” (Here passes a wave of silver / here the wind murmurs of love).

Short and seemingly simple songs appear as succinct miniatures embodying the boundless desire of those amateur musicians to create their intimate musical worlds and engrave the poems in their memories. These pieces were created to transmit the expressivity of exquisite poetic texts in conjunction with music. A beautiful example of this can be found in the lovely verses of

Rom oder Mailand. Die Werke aller Arten musikalischer Repertoires von Komponisten aus ganz Europa, gesponsert von Adligen und Gönnern, wurden hier für die ganze Welt publiziert, was eine effektive Form der Verbreitung und des Verkaufs darstellte. Neben den sehr beliebten Madrigalsammlungen finden wir aus dieser Zeit immer wieder kleinere Bücher mit kurzen Liedern – canzonette, villanelle, scherzi usw. –, die auf der Grundlage poetischer Texte und musikalischer Formen komponiert oder arrangiert waren, und die den Ohren der Musikliebhaber vertraut waren.

Italien war im frühen siebzehnten Jahrhundert eine der künstlerisch und kulturell aktivsten Regionen Europas – die Musik erfuhr dort zu jener Zeit eine entscheidende Entwicklung mit der Schaffung eines neuen Genres, das man später „Oper“ nannte. Gleichzeitig waren die musikalischen Aktivitäten auf öffentlichen Plätzen, in Häusern und Palästen der perfekten Rahmen für gesellschaftliche Zusammenkünfte im intimen häuslichen öder höfischen Kreis, wo Poesie, Lieder und Tänze, die meist mündlich übertragen wurden, den wiederkehrenden „Soundtrack“ dieser Epoche bildeten.

In diesen wird, fast wie eine Werbung, die Verwendung eines alfabeto della chitarra alla spagnola angekündigt, d.h. eines Akkordsystems für das Spielen und gegenseitige Begleiten auf der Gitarre, inklusive der verschiedenen Griffpositionen. Dieses Rasgueado-System wurde von Komponisten oder Verlegern oft als cleveres

Zusammen mit einigen Instrumentaltänzen aus Sammlungen für Gitarre oder Solo-Tasteninstrument – hier auf der Harfe gespielt – unternehmen wir eine Reise durch Akkorde, Melodien und Gedichte aus einigen mit dem alfabeto gedruckten Sammlungen italienischer Komponisten, z.B. jene des berühmten Harfenisten Stefano Landi und des eingebürgerten Italieners Girolamo Kapsberger, die bei dem renommierten Verleger Giovanni Battista Robletti in Rom erschienen sind. Von demselben Verleger haben wir auch einige Stücke des in Italien aktiven Spaniers Juan de Arañés aufgenommen, der in den 1620er Jahren für den Botschafter des spanischen Hofes in Rom arbeitete. Abgerundet werden die Gesangsstücke durch Kompositionen des weniger bekannten Carlo Milanuzzi und einige von Giovanni Stefani gesammelte Lieder. Die meisten Stücke in diesem Programm sind Strophenlieder (Villanellen, Canzonetten, Romanzen, Letrillen, usw.) und verwenden Texte volkstümlicher Herkunft. In den poetischen Themen dieser Texte finden wir so unterschiedliche Akteure wie die von Liebe verletzte Venus, ein weinender Amor, tanzende Hirten oder sinnliche Mädchen an den Ufern eines Flusses – kurz gesagt Charaktere, die die wiederkehrenden Themen der Liebe mit ihren entsprechenden mythologischen Szenarien, bukolisch und sogar burlesk oder erotisch darstellen. Diese Stücke zeigen einen ausgeprägten Einfluss der gesungenen Tänze iberischen

Parallel zur Entstehung dieser Publikationen gab es eine bedeutende Anzahl poetischer Manuskripte – zum Beispiel den Canzionere des Herzogs von Alba, der sich im Besitz der Sängerin Adriana Basile befand. Obwohl sie keine geschriebene Musik enthalten, sind diese Sammlungen mit Anmerkungen versehen, was auf die gesungene Überlieferung der Gedichte (auf Italienisch 9

Ihr syllabischer Gesangsstil verknüpft den prosodischen Rhythmus des Textes mit Melodien und musikalischen Phrasen, die die Reime und poetischen Formen unterstützen und verstärken, auch wenn die gesungenen Akzente manchmal nicht der gesprochenen Prosodie entsprechen. Es ist klar, dass es dabei nicht um die Demonstration einer großen stimmlichen Virtuosität des Sängers geht, da diese nicht im Einklang mit der Natur und dem Kontext dieser Stücke stünde.

Wiederholung von Textteilen, während die coplas (die Strophen) die gesamte Handlung und das Gewicht des poetischen Textes tragen.

Bei den italienischen Gedichten ist der Einfluss des Textes auf die Konstruktion musikalischer Phrasen noch deutlicher: Verse verschiedener Metren mit einem zumeist konsonanten Reimschema wechseln sich im selben Gedicht ab und bestimmen den prosodischen und musikalischen Rhythmus; so finden wir uns mit scheinbar unregelmäßigen Formen wieder, die sich dank der musikalischen Logik gegenseitig ergänzen.

Kurze und einfache Lieder werden uns in Form von prägnanten Miniaturen präsentiert, die den überwältigenden Wunsch dieser Amateurmusiker widerspiegeln, ihre intime Klangwelt zu gestalten und die Gedichte in ihr Gedächtnis einzuprägen. Diese Stücke wurden geschaffen, um die Ausdruckskraft exquisiter poetischer Texte in Verbindung mit der Musik zu vermitteln. Ein Beispiel sind die schönen Verse von Gabriello Chiabrera, die diesem Programm seinen Namen geben, und die mittels phonetischer und rhetorischer Mittel in einer Szene alla Botticelli die Bewegung des Windes und das Hin und Her der Wellen beschreiben: „Qui trascorre onda d’argento / qui d’amor mormora il vento“ (Hier kommt eine Silberwelle / hier murmelt der Wind von Liebe).

Die Poesie ist die Daseinsberechtigung und das Rückgrat dieser Lieder und gesungenen Tänze, denn deren Formen und musikalische Strukturen werden durch die verschiedenen poetischen Genres bestimmt, auf denen sie basieren. In den spanischen Stücken sind die gebräuchlichsten die romances in achtsilbigen Versen, und die letrillas, die im 17. Jahrhundert Verse von sechs oder acht Silben mit einem Refrain (estribillo) abwechseln, der oft durch Seguidilla-Verse gebildet wird, in denen sechs oder sieben Silben mit Paaren von fünf Silben alternieren. Diese Praxis zeigt sich in den Stücken von Arañés, in denen die musikalische Entwicklung durch den Einsatz rhetorisch-musikalischer Mittel im Refrain erfolgt, u.a. durch Rhythmusvariationen und

La guitare était indéniablement l’instrument idéal pour ces chanteurs amateurs, le jeu gratté étant plus facile que le jeu polyphonique exigé par le luth ou le clavecin, et car elle était moins coûteuse.

D’AMOR MORMORA IL VENTO L’Italie fut l’un des principaux foyers de production artistique et culturelle du premier XVIIe siècle ; la musique y connut une évolution déterminante, car c’est là que se construisit un genre nouveau que la postérité allait appeler « opéra ». On y faisait de la musique partout : sur les places publiques, dans les maisons et les palais, où se réunissaient des cercles dans lesquels la poésie, les chansons et les danses, généralement transmises oralement, s’alliaient pour créer la « bande son » de l’époque.

Ces éditions imprimées étaient le fruit d’une pratique vieille de plusieurs siècles – on pense aux répertoires de frottole et de strambotti, par exemple – qui consistait pour les compositeurs à associer des mélodies de type populaire à des poèmes, un peu comme le lied en Allemagne et la mélodie en France au XIXe siècle. Alors qu’en Italie les exemples abondent, en Espagne cette musique était rarement notée et encore moins imprimée. La présence de l’alphabet de guitare alla spagnola en Italie témoigne d'une pratique d’accompagnement établie par les musiciens espagnols présents depuis plus d’un siècle à Naples, Rome ou Milan. Parallèlement à cette efflorescence de publications imprimées, la poésie destinée au chant était aussi réunie dans des collections manuscrites, comme le Canzoniere du duc d’Albe, qui passa entre les mains de la chanteuse Adriana Basile.

Dans certains de ces chansonniers, les poèmes sont associés à de la musique notée en tablature ou, plus généralement en Italie, par l’alphabet pour guitare, et ceux qui n’ont aucune notation musicale présentent tout de même des traces de transmission par le chant.

Venise, Rome et Milan étaient les principaux centres d’imprimerie de la Péninsule, et il en sortait des florilèges de poésie et de littérature, mais aussi des travaux scientifiques, religieux et, bien entendu, musicaux. On y imprimait des œuvres composées dans toute l’Europe, dans tous les genres musicaux, car ces publications destinées au monde entier étaient un moyen de diffusion et de vente efficace. Aux côtés des recueils de madrigaux si appréciés, on trouvait aussi de nombreux petits recueils de chansons brèves – canzonette, villanelle, scherzi, etc. –, compilations de compositions sur des poèmes ou des canevas mélodiques, ou arrangements de chansons déjà bien connues des mélomanes.

Pour mieux appâter le chaland, on y annonçait en page de titre l’utilisation de l’alphabet de guitare à l’espagnole, c’est-à-dire un système de notation des accords par des lettres, permettant de gratter la guitare pour s’accompagner en chantant. Ce système était souvent utilisé par les compositeurs et les imprimeurs comme

mentales – interprétées ici à la harpe – et de mélodies et poèmes puisés dans quelques-uns des livres avec alphabet de guitare de compositeurs italiens comme le célèbre harpiste Stefano Landi ou le musicien naturalisé italien Girolamo Kapsberger, sortis des célèbres presses de Giovanni Battista Robletti à Rome. Sorties des mêmes presses, quelques pièces d’un Espagnol actif en Italie, Juan de Arañés, qui était au service de l’ambassadeur du roi d’Espagne dans les années 1620. Les autres pièces vocales sont l’œuvre d’un compositeur moins connu, Carlo Milanuzzi, et s’y ajoutent quelques chansons recueillies par Giovanni Stefani. La plupart des pièces de ce programme sont des chansons strophiques (villanelle, canzonette, romances, letrillas, etc.), qui témoignent de l’utilisation de textes d’origine populaire. On y rencontre Vénus blessée, Cupidon en pleurs, des bergers en train de danser ou des jeunes filles au bord d’une rivière, brûlées par le soleil ; ces personnages correspondent aux différentes thématiques amoureuses et à leur décor mythologique ou bucolique, mais aussi burlesque ou érotique. Ces morceaux témoignent de la forte influence des danses chantées d’origine ibérique, écrites sur des rythmes généralement ternaires comme la folía ou l’españoleta et même dans un genre d’origine latino-américaine, la chaconne – généralement associée au libertinage, au plaisir et à la belle vie –, par contraste avec les pièces plus savantes composées sur des danses de cour comme les gaillardes, dont les harmonies, la métrique et les textes sont plus complexes. Leur style vocal syllabique associe le rythme prosodique du texte avec des mélodies et des phrases musicales qui soutiennent et complètent les rimes et formes poétiques même

quand les accents chantés ne correspondent pas à la prosodie parlée : il est clair qu’il ne s’agit pas pour le chanteur de faire montre d’une grande virtuosité vocale, qui ne s’accorderait pas avec la nature et le contexte de ces pièces.

La poésie est la raison d’être et le squelette de ces chansons et danses chantées, car c’est elle qui en détermine la forme et la structure musicale. Dans les pièces en espagnol, la forme la plus habituelle est le romance, en vers octosyllabiques, et la letrilla, qui au XVIIe siecle fait alterner des vers de 6 ou 8 pieds avec un refrain (estribillo) souvent formé de vers de seguidilla (où des vers de 6 ou 7 pieds alternent avec des pentasyllabes).

C’est le cas chez Arañés, où le refrain est le lieu où la musique se déploie pleinement, avec des procédés rhétorico-musicaux et des jeux avec le rythme et les répétitions du texte, alors que dans les couplets, c’est le texte poétique et son action qui ont le plus de poids. Dans les pièces italiennes, les phrases musicales sont encore plus nettement déterminées par les textes, puisque dans chaque poème on trouve différents types de vers ; ce sont les rimes, généralement consonantes qui déterminent le rythme prosodique et musical ; ainsi, l’apparente irrégularité de la forme métrique trouve sa cohérence grâce à la musique.

Ces chansons brèves et en apparence simples se présentent à nous comme autant de miniatures concises qui incarnent le désir de ces musiciens amateurs de créer leur univers sonore intime et de graver les poèmes dans leur mémoire. Ces pièces furent créées pour transmettre 12

l’expressivité de textes poétiques exquis en alliance avec la musique. On en trouve un exemple dans les très beaux vers de Gabriello Chiabrera qui donnent son titre à ce programme et qui, par des procédés phonétiques et rhétoriques, nous font entendre et voir – comme chez Botticelli – le passage de la brise et le frémissement des

vagues : « Qui trascorre onda d’argento / qui d’amor mormora il vento » (Ici passe une onde argentée / ici le vent murmure d’amour).
