Shuann Chai & Tami Krausz Flautist TAMI KRAUSZ performs worldwide as a renowned specialist in Baroque, Classical and Romantic music on historical flutes. Born in Israel, Tami’s interest in early music and historically informed performance practice began during her studies at the Tel Aviv Music Academy with Yossi Arnheim and in Jerusalem with Idit Shemer. She was the recipient of an instrument grant (a Baroque Traverso made by Rudolf Tutz) from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and won a scholarship from the Dutch educational organisation Nuffic to further her studies under Barthold Kuijken at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. Completing a soloist master’s degree in early music, Tami graduated cum laude in 2001.

A prizewinner of early music competitions in both Brugge and Tel Aviv, Tami has collaborated with ensembles such as Le Concert de la Loge, Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, B’Rock, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Holland Baroque, Das Kleine Konzert, Capriccio Stravagante, Les Inventions, Academia Daniel, Capella Cracoviensis, Capella Augustina, and Le Cercle de l’Harmonie; and under such figures as Philippe Herreweghe, Ton Koopman, René Jacobs, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Raphaël Pichon and Richard Egarr. Chamber music partners include violinist Julien Chauvin, countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and soprano Sandrine Piau.

Tami has recorded CDs on CPO, Brilliant Classics, Naïve, Aparté and Pentatone. Her solo playing in François Devienne’s Symphonie Concertante (Aparté, 2018) was warmly received by the music press. Based in Europe, she is regularly invited to give recitals and masterclasses worldwide and serves as a guest jury member at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague.

SHUANN CHAI is an engaging performer recognised for her interpretations on historical and modern pianos. Amongst her teachers she counts inspiring mentors such as Claus-Christian Schuster, Norma Fisher, and Anton Kuerti. As a young pianist she also studied with Jack Radunsky, himself a former student of legendary pianist-composer Percy Grainger. His lessons instilled a deep admiration of early recordings and the Romantic Tradition of piano playing. With his encouragement, she was introduced to fortepianos through a masterclass given by Malcolm Bilson. These were the sparks that led to her enduring involvement with early pianos and expressive historical interpretation.

She has earned strong reviews in publications such as Fanfare (“truly remarkable”), BBC Music Magazine, and the Classical Music Sentinel (“played with a determination and urgency that makes Beethoven’s music sound larger than life”). By Beethoven’s 250th birthday in December 2020 she will have achieved a personal milestone of having performed all 35 of the composer’s sonatas for solo piano as well as his collected works for both piano/violin and piano/cello. Upcoming projects include performing the complete chamber music of Brahms for violin, cello and piano on historical instruments with Shunske Sato and Hidemi Suzuki as well as a collaboration with Belgian-Iranian photographer Mashid Mohadjerin, featuring contemporary photography synced with a live performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

the second quarter of the nineteenth century, the one-keyed (so-called ‘baroque’) flute had evolved into a multi-keyed instrument with a conical bore which facilitated chromatic fingerings and opened new possibilities in tone production. Pianos, similarly, underwent remarkable changes: builders were constantly searching for ways to increase the instrument’s range and volume while experimenting with a variety of pedals.

KÜHL, NICHT LAU The last decades of the eighteenth century brought widespread instability to continental Europe. As the next century began, rampant warfare and political upheaval disrupted daily life on every level but also became catalysts for dramatic transitions in literature, art and music.

Composers in and around the cultural centers of Paris, London, and Vienna in particular were striving to find new paths of musical expression to convey the shifting aesthetic. The development of a wide range of musical forms, tonal and harmonic possibilities, and a deeply individualistic artistry announced the advent of a new ‘Romantic’ era. This artistic expansion was coupled with rapid innovations in both instrument design and manufacturing, bringing new possibilities in sonority and technique. Buyers of these instruments – mostly amateur musicians of aristocratic social standing and affluent financial means – became an influential force in the cultural environment of Europe. The performance of chamber music in private domestic salons, often hosted and played by these accomplished amateurs, became a fashionable activity amongst the Habsburg and English elite.

These developments in instrument-making were clearly palpable in the concurrent music.

This album illustrates some of the most significant aspects in music for flute and piano, spanning three groundbreaking decades of the nineteenth century.

Born in 1786 to a family of military musicians in Uelzen, Germany, Friedrich Kuhlau’s destiny was shaped by a gruesome childhood accident that caused him to lose his right eye. To provide some distraction during the painful and protracted recovery period, Kuhlau’s parents acquired a keyboard instrument for the young boy. Showing promise in his unexpected venture, young Friedrich moved to Hamburg and studied piano and counterpoint with Christian Schwencke, whose teachers had been the musical luminaries Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Kirnberger. When Napoleon invaded Hamburg in 1810 Kuhlau fled to Copenhagen, acquiring Danish citizenship in 1813. He made

eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The Capriccio in D minor (op. 10b) comes from such a collection of twelve solo-variations for the flute published in Hamburg in 1810. Based on well-known French and German folk tunes, this opus marked the beginning of Kuhlau’s enduring bond with the flute and lays the foundations of his musical language.

his living there as a concert pianist and enjoyed considerable popularity as a pedagogue while composing occasional music for the Danish court. In posterity, Kuhlau is best known for his impressive oeuvre of chamber-music, most of which was written with soloistic flute parts.

Having composed such an abundance of flute repertoire that he earned the nickname ‘Beethoven of the flute’, it is curious that Kuhlau hardly played the instrument himself. In a letter from 1813 he wrote: “I play this instrument only a little, but I know it perfectly”. Not only did he understand the instrument in a way that distinguished him from other composers, but his way of writing for it shaped the flute concert-repertoire for generations. Characterised by displays of high virtuosity combined with colorful lyrical passages, the works of later flutist-composers such as Fürstenau, Böhm, Köhler, Dorus, and Taffanel undoubtedly bear the influence of Kuhlau.

Stylistically, the Capriccio is an obvious predecessor to the Grande Sonate Concertante in A minor (op. 85), one of Kuhlau’s most elaborate works for piano and flute. The Sonata’s strong character and dramatic gestures were clearly inspired by two other pillars of the early Romantic era: Mendelssohn’s concert ouverture A Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Oberon, both of which Kuhlau heard for the first time shortly before the composition of this Sonata in 1827.

The first movement opens with a simple theme with a fragile and yearning sentiment which is interrupted by an explosive statement of virtuosity. The constant shifting between these extremes of character is mirrored in the thematic dialogue of the two instruments. The second movement is a lively scherzo with a contrasting trio section reminiscent of a waltz; an open invitation to dance and to explore more freedom in rhythm and rubato. The opening theme of the third movement Adagio employs

A substantial part of Kuhlau’s output – and indeed of many of his contemporaries – was comprised of themes and variations, improvisations, or fantasies based on national airs, folk melodies, and popular songs. These borrowed themes and their original texts conjured familiar emotions such as love, jealousy, or patriotism, and were greatly appealing to both amateur players and their audiences throughout the late 7

a motive reminiscent of Mozart’s ‘March of the Priests’ from his opera Die Zauberflöte. This chordal progression shares a common ground in turn with composers of the early eighteenth century, particularly George Frederic Händel.

In this touching homage to his predecessors, Kuhlau joins composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, and Mendelssohn in recognizing and honoring Baroque forms and counterpoint.

The observation of the past, suggested by the humble theme, is then brought into the present with a set of elaborate variations in the lyrical Italian bel canto style. The Sonata closes with a majestic fourth movement in sonata-rondo form which reaffirms the work’s grandeur with its long-ranging tessitura and tonal variety. The Rosenberger fortepiano used in this recording also gives the pianist a chance to utilise the instrument’s “Janissary stop” (a drum-and-bell mechanism operated by a foot pedal) in spectacular fashion.

Beethoven gradually lost his hearing); neither of the two ever had more than intermittent periods of financial stability, and both men lived as bachelors all their lives. Often lacking in social graces, there are surviving letters from both Beethoven and Kuhlau that express annoyance with the obligatory mingling that was necessary in dealing with the local aristocracy; further frustrations with the incompetence of music publishers was also a common theme. More importantly, however, both figures developed a unique musical style embodying the romantic vision of their era which is perhaps best described by the poet and philosopher Friedrich Schlegel (1772-1829): “a progressive, universal poetry. […] it is its particular essence that it is always becoming, and that it can never be completed.”

Despite the numerous similarities that the composers shared in life, Beethoven’s strongest writing for the flute lies in his symphonies, while Kuhlau’s is to be found in his chamber music.

Beethoven’s output for the flute as a chamber music instrument consists only of two sets of Variations based on folk-derived melodies; an Allegro and Minuet for two flutes; a Sonata in B-flat whose authorship is doubtful; a Trio for flute, bassoon, and piano; and the Serenade (op. 25), composed just before 1800 for a trio of flute, violin, and viola. For financial reasons, Beethoven reluctantly approved an arrangement of the Serenade for flute and piano which was

Kuhlau was a true admirer of Beethoven’s works and was a vocal advocate of his music while abroad. Coincidentally, a number of interesting parallels can be drawn between the two composers, though they met in person only once. Both were received as avant-garde figures in their times, while maintaining a deeply rooted respect for the older compositional fundaments of Bach, Händel and Mozart. Both men lived with a handicap (Kuhlau had only one eye and 8

The usage of B-A-C-H (pitches B-flat/A/C/ B-natural) in canonic or fugal writing originated with Johann Sebastian himself and has been used by numerous composers ever since: his son Johann Christian, Robert Schumann, Charles Ives, and Max Reger, to name but a few. Kuhlau, too, composed a large number of canons and perpetual fugues throughout his career. Perhaps it was because of his direct pedagogical lineage to the foremost contrapuntalist – through his teachers Schwencke, Kirnberger, and C.P.E. Bach – that he developed a talent and reputation for the genre. Several of Kuhlau’s canons appeared in various issues of the Leipzig publication Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung as musical puzzles, and Kuhlau was in the habit of exchanging ‘puzzle canons’ and other canonic enigmas with his contrapuntally-minded friends.

made, under his supervision, by Franz Xaver Kleinheinz in Leipzig. The composer’s initial misgivings about the new version stemmed from fears that a change of instrumentation might jeopardize the work’s intrinsic stability and integrity. Published in 1803 as the composer’s opus 41, its subsequent popularity (and probably a corresponding monetary profit) helped to dispel his earlier doubts.

The bright and lively Serenade is a clear proponent of young Beethoven’s unique style: a propulsive, inventive character with specific and contrasting motives, straining against conventionality. Organized as a collection of six movements modelled on the classical diverimenti, the Serenade consists of dance-like themes in alternating character: galant, scherzo, pastoral, virtuosic, poetic, humorous.

Beethoven also composed a few dozen multi-voiced canons, most of which were musical souvenirs dedicated to members of his personal and professional circle. The inspiration to juxtapose the music of Beethoven and Kuhlau on this recording came from the delightful account of their first and only personal encounter. On a warm September evening in 1825 a convivial gathering of musicians took place; after dinner and a leisurely countryside stroll, Kuhlau challenged his colleagues to a musical puzzle based on the tones B-A-C-H. Beethoven apparently improvised a three-voiced canon on the spot,

In a notebook dating from the last decade of his life, Beethoven made a list of compositions yet to be fulfilled. This tantalizing page of whatcould-have-been includes large-scale projects (a tenth symphony, a sixth piano concerto, a horn concerto, masses, and a Passion-Oratorio, among others) as well as interesting chamber music combinations such as sonatas for two pianos and a flute quintet. Among these plans was the mention of an Overture based on the notes B-A-C-H, an ode to the composer Beethoven referred to as ‘the immortal god of Harmony’.

This charming moment in music history is remembered with a short Kühl, nicht lau canon (WoO 191), developed by mathematician and pianist Joris Weimar. The B-A-C-H theme is presented as a short fugue for three male voices, flute and piano. Since Beethoven intended this canon as a good-natured gesture between friends, perhaps he would have enjoyed our rendition! We hope that it brings modern-day listeners closer to a time when extemporization and musical riddles were a regular part of musicians’ lives.

but the following morning a note was delivered to Kuhlau which read: “I must confess that the champagne went straight to my head yesterday, and once more I see that it confuses my wits rather than assists them; for though it is usually easy enough for me to give an answer on the spot, I declare I do not in the least recollect what I wrote yesterday – Think sometimes of your most faithful, Beethoven.” The note was accompanied by two tokens of Beethoven’s appreciation: a small portrait of himself as well as a sketch of a new canon, based on the same motivic theme and with the added text Kühl, nicht lau (cool, not lukewarm), a friendly pun on Kuhlau’s name.

Instrumente sich akustisch gut in die intime Umgebung eines aristokratischen Musikzimmers einfügten. Im zweiten Viertel des 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich die einklappige (sogenannte „barocke“) Flöte zu einem mehrklappigen Instrument mit konischer Bohrung, das chromatische Griffe ermöglichte und neue Möglichkeiten der Tonerzeugung bot. Auch die Klaviere erfuhren bemerkenswerte Veränderungen: die Instrumentenbauer suchten ständig nach Wegen, Tonumfang und Lautstärke zu erhöhen, und experimentierten mit verschiedenen Pedalen.

KÜHL, NICHT LAU In den letzten Jahrzehnten des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts waren weite Teile des kontinentalen Europas von Instabilität geprägt. Zu Beginn des folgenden Jahrhunderts erschütterten zahlreiche Kriege und politische Umwälzungen den Alltag auf allen Ebenen, waren aber gleichzeitig auch Katalysatoren für dramatische Neuerungen in Literatur, Kunst und Musik. Komponisten aus den kulturellen Zentren Paris, London und vor allem Wien beschritten neue Wege, um die sich verändernde Ästhetik musikalisch auszudrücken. Die Schöpfung einer breiten Palette musikalischer Formen, tonaler und harmonischer Möglichkeiten sowie die Vorstellung eines tief individualistischen Künstlertums kündigte den Beginn einer neuen „romantischen“ Ära an.

Diese künstlerische Expansion ging einher mit rasanten Innovationen im Instrumentenbau, die ganz neue Möglichkeiten in Klang und Technik eröffneten. Die Käufer dieser Instrumente – meist sehr wohlhabende Amateurmusiker aus aristokratischen Kreisen – wurden zu einer einflussreichen Kraft in der europäischen Kultur.

Kammermusikaufführungen in privaten Salons, oft gespielt von solchen versierten Amateuren, kamen bei der habsburgischen und englischen Elite in Mode.

Die Entwicklungen im Instrumentenbau waren in der Musik dieser Zeit deutlich spürbar.

Das vorliegende Album umfasst drei bahnbrechende Jahrzehnte des 19. Jahrhunderts und offenbart uns einige der interessantesten Facetten der Musik für Flöte und Klavier.

Friedrich Kuhlau wurde 1786 in Uelzen als Kind einer Familie von Militärmusikern geboren. Sein Schicksal wurde von einem tragischen Unfall geprägt, bei dem er als Kind sein rechtes Auge verlor. Um den Jungen während der schmerzhaften und langwierigen Genesungszeit etwas zu zerstreuen, erwarben seine Eltern ein Tasteninstrument. Dieses zufällige Unterfangen brachte Friedrichs Talent zum Vorschein, und so zog er als junger Mann nach Hamburg, um Klavier und Kontrapunkt bei Christian Schwencke zu studieren, der wiederum bei den Koryphäen

Die Kombination von Flöte und Klavier war zu dieser Zeit besonders beliebt, da beide 14

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach und Johann Kirnberger gelernt hatte. Als Napoleon 1810 in Hamburg einmarschierte, floh Kuhlau nach Kopenhagen und erwarb 1813 die dänische Staatsbürgerschaft.

Dort verdiente er seinen Lebensunterhalt als Konzertpianist, erfreute sich großer Beliebtheit als Pädagoge und komponierte zu bestimmten Anlässen Musik für den dänischen Hof. In der Nachwelt ist Kuhlau vor allem für sein beeindruckendes kammermusikalisches Werk bekannt, das zahlreiche solistische Flötenpartien aufweist.

Weisen, bekannten Melodien oder Volksliedern beruhten. Diese musikalischen Anleihen und ihre ursprünglichen Texte beschworen vertraute Emotionen wie Liebe, Eifersucht oder Patriotismus und besaßen im späten 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert eine starke Anziehungskraft, sowohl für musizierende Laien als auch für ihre Zuhörer. Das Capriccio in d-Moll (op. 10b) entstammt einer Sammlung von 12 Solovariationen für Flöte, die 1810 in Hamburg erschienen war. Basierend auf bekannten französischen und deutschen Volksweisen markierte dieses Werk den Beginn von Kuhlaus langanhaltender Vorliebe für die Flöte und legte den Grundstein für seine musikalische Sprache.

Es ist recht seltsam, dass Kuhlau, der ein solch überreiches Flötenrepertoire geschaffen hat, dass man ihn den „Beethoven der Flöte“ nannte, dieses Instrument selbst kaum spielte.

In einem Brief von 1813 schrieb er: „[…] ich spiele nur wenig dies Instrument, aber ich kenne es genau.“ Sein Verständnis des Instrumentes war im Vergleich zu anderen Komponisten einzigartig und seine Kompositionsweise prägte das Repertoire der Flötenkonzerte über Generationen hinweg. Die hohe Virtuosität und die farbenreichen lyrischen Passagen der Werke späterer Flötenkomponisten wie Fürstenau, Böhm, Köhler, Dorus und Taffanel verraten zweifellos den Einfluss Kuhlaus.

Stilistisch gesehen, ist das Capriccio ganz offensichtlich ein Vorläufer der Grande Sonate Concertante in a-Moll (op. 85), eines von Kuhlaus kunstvollsten Werken für Klavier und Flöte.

Der kraftvolle Charakter und der dramatische Ausdruck der Sonate sind offenbar inspiriert von zwei weiteren Säulen der Frühromantik: Mendelssohns Ouvertüre Ein Sommernachtstraum und Carl Maria von Webers Oper Oberon, beides Werke, die Kuhlau kurz vor der Komposition dieser Sonate im Jahre 1827 erstmals zu hören bekam.

Ein wesentlicher Teil von Kuhlaus Schaffen – wie auch dem vieler seiner Zeitgenossen – bestand aus Themen und Variationen, Improvisationen oder Fantasien, die auf nationalen

Der erste Satz beginnt ganz schlicht mit einem fragilen und sehnsuchtsvollen Thema, unterbrochen von einer explosiven Demonstra15

tion von Virtuosität. Der ständige Wechsel dieser beiden Extreme spiegelt sich im thematischen Dialog der beiden Instrumente wider. Der zweite Satz ist ein lebhaftes Scherzo mit einem kontrastierenden Triosatz, der an einen Walzer erinnert; eine offene Einladung zum Tanz und der Entdeckung größerer Freiräume in Rhythmus und Rubato. Das Eröffnungsthema des dritten Satzes Adagio verwendet ein Motiv, das an den „Marsch der Priester“ aus Mozarts Zauberflöte erinnert.

Dieses akkordische Fortschreiten weist wiederum Ähnlichkeiten mit den Kompositionen des frühen 18. Jahrhunderts, vor allem Georg Friedrich Händels auf. Mit dieser anrührenden Hommage an seine Vorgänger steht Kuhlau in einer Reihe mit Komponisten wie Schubert, Beethoven und Mendelssohn, die sich um die Wertschätzung und Verewigung von Form und Kontrapunkt des Barocks verdient gemacht haben. Die Betrachtung der Vergangenheit, angeregt durch das bescheidene Thema, wird mit einer Reihe kunstvoller Variationen im lyrischen italienischen Belcanto-Stil in die Gegenwart geholt. Die Sonate schließt mit einem majestätischen vierten Satz in Form eines Sonatenrondo, der die Größe des Werkes mit seinem weitreichenden Ambitus und seiner klanglichen Vielfalt bekräftigt. Das in dieser Aufnahme verwendete Rosenberger-Hammerklavier besitzt einen „Janitscharen-Zug“ (ein durch ein Fußpedal betätigter Trommel- und Schellenmechanismus), der dem Pianisten als spektakulärer Effekt zur Verfügung steht.

Kuhlau war ein aufrichtiger Bewunderer von Beethovens Musik und deren eifriger Verfechter im Ausland. Und obwohl sich die beiden Komponisten nur einmal trafen, kann man eine Reihe interessanter Parallelen zwischen ihnen ziehen. Beide wurden in ihrer Zeit als avantgardistische Persönlichkeiten wahrgenommen, während sie gleichzeitig einen tiefwurzelnden Respekt für die alten kompositorischen Grundlagen eines Bach, Händel oder Mozart empfanden. Beide Männer lebten mit einer Behinderung (Kuhlau hatte nur ein Auge und Beethoven verlor allmählich sein Gehör).

Keiner der beiden genoss finanzielle Stabilität über einen längeren Zeitraum, und beide blieben zeitlebens Junggesellen. Auch waren beide nicht immer geschickt im gesellschaftlichen Umgang, und sowohl von Beethoven als auch von Kuhlau sind Briefe überliefert, in denen sie ihrem Verdruss über die Notwendigkeit, Verbindungen zur lokalen Aristokratie zu pflegen, Ausdruck verliehen. Auch ihre Unzufriedenheit mit inkompetenten Musikverlegern war ein häufiges Thema. Noch wichtiger ist jedoch, dass beide Figuren einen einzigartigen Musikstil entwickelten, der die romantische Vision ihrer Zeit verkörpert, und vielleicht am besten vom Dichter und Philosophen Friedrich Schlegel (1772-1829) beschrieben wird: „Die romantische Poesie ist eine progressive Universalpoesie. [...] das ist ihr eigentliches Wesen, daß sie ewig nur werden, nie vollendet sein kann.“ 16

ist in sechs Sätzen nach dem Modell des klassischen Divertimentos gestaltet und besteht aus tänzerischen Themen wechselnden Charakters: galant, scherzhaft, pastoral, virtuos, poetisch, humorvoll.

Ungeachtet der zahlreichen Parallelen im Leben der Komponisten sind, was ihre Werke für Flöte betrifft, Beethovens stärkste Kompositionen in seinen Sinfonien zu finden, bei Kuhlau hingegen in der Kammermusik. Beethovens Werke für Flöte als Kammermusikinstrument beschränken sich auf zwei Reihen von Variationen über volkstümliche Melodien, ein Allegro und Menuett für zwei Flöten, eine Sonate in BDur, deren Urheberschaft allerdings umstritten ist, ein Trio für Flöte, Fagott und Klavier und die Serenade (op. 25) für Flöte, Violine und Bratsche, die er kurz vor der Jahrhundertwende komponierte. Nur widerwillig und aus finanziellen Gründen akzeptierte Beethoven, dass Franz Xaver Kleinheinz in Leipzig eine von ihm autorisierte Bearbeitung der Serenade für Flöte und Klavier vornahm. Beethovens anfängliche Vorbehalte gegenüber dieser neuen Version beruhten auf seiner Befürchtung, eine Änderung der Instrumentierung könne den inneren Zusammenhalt und die Stabilität des Werkes gefährden. Die Popularität des 1803 als Opus 41 herausgegebenen Werkes (und wahrscheinlich ein entsprechender monetärer Gewinn) halfen wohl, seine ursprünglichen Zweifel zu zerstreuen.

Im letzten Jahrzehnt seines Lebens verzeichnete Beethoven in einem Notizbuch eine Liste von Kompositionen, die er noch schreiben wollte. Diese verheißungsvolle Aufzählung möglicher musikalischer Schätze umfasst sowohl Großprojekte (u.a. eine zehnte Symphonie, ein sechstes Klavierkonzert, ein Hornkonzert, Messen und ein Passionsoratorium) als auch Kammermusik mit interessanten Instrumentalkombinationen wie zum Beispiel Sonaten für zwei Klaviere und ein Flötenquintett. Zu diesen Plänen gehörte auch eine Ouvertüre auf der Grundlage der Noten B-A-C-H, eine Ode an den Komponisten, den Beethoven als „den unsterblichen Gott der Harmonie“ bezeichnete.

Das ursprünglich von Bach selbst in Kanons oder Fugen genutzte B-A-C-H-Motiv wurde seither von zahlreichen Komponisten verwendet: seinem Sohn Johann Christian, von Robert Schumann, Charles Ives und Max Reger, um nur einige zu nennen. Auch Kuhlau komponierte seine ganze Karriere hindurch immer wieder Fugen sowie eine ganze Reihe von Kanons. Vielleicht lag es an seiner direkten pädagogischen Verbindung zu dem Meister des

denn so leicht ich sonst doch auf der Stelle zu antworten im Stande bin, so weiß ich doch gar nicht mehr, was ich gestern geschrieben habe.

– Erinnern sie sich zu weilen ihres Ergebensten Beethoven.“ Begleitet wurde die Nachricht von zwei Dingen als Zeichen der Wertschätzung Beethovens: einem kleinen Porträt von ihm selbst sowie der Skizze eines neuen Kanons, der auf dem gleichen Motiv basiert und mit dem Text Kühl nicht lau, einem freundschaftlichen Wortspiel mit Kuhlaus Namen, versehen war.

Kontrapunkts durch seine Lehrer Schwencke, Kirnberger und C. P. E. Bach, dass er ein Talent für dieses Genre und eine entsprechende Reputation entwickelte. Mehrere von Kuhlaus Kanons erschienen in verschiedenen Ausgaben der Leipziger Allgemeinen musikalischen Zeitung als musikalische Rätsel, und er selbst tauschte mit kontrapunktisch gesinnten Freunden häufig kanonische Spielereien oder Rätsel aus.

Auch Beethoven komponierte einige Dutzend mehrstimmiger Kanons, von denen die meisten als Andenken Menschen aus seinem persönlichen und beruflichen Bekanntenkreis gewidmet waren. Unsere Idee, Musikstücke von Beethoven und Kuhlau in dieser Aufnahme einander gegenüberzustellen, wurde von dem entzückenden Bericht über ihre erste und einzige persönliche Begegnung inspiriert. An einem warmen Septemberabend im Jahr 1825 fanden sich einige Musiker zu einem geselligen Abendessen ein; nach einem gemütlichen Spaziergang an der frischen Luft forderte Kuhlau seine Kollegen zu einem Rätselkanon auf die Töne B-A-C-H heraus. Beethoven improvisierte anscheinend ad hoc einen dreistimmigen Kanon.

Am nächsten Morgen jedoch erhielt Kuhlau eine Nachricht mit folgendem Inhalt: „Ich muß gestehen, daß auch mir der Champagner gestern gar sehr zu Kopf gestiegen, und ich abermals die Erfahrung machen mußte, daß d.g. meine Wirkungskräfte eher Unterdrüken als befördern,

Das B-A-C-H-Motiv wird hier vom Pianisten und Mathematiker Joris Weimar in einer kurzen Fuge für drei Männerstimmen, Flöte und Klavier präsentiert. Da Beethoven diesen Kanon als liebenswerte Geste unter Freunden ansah, hätte er an unserer Interpretation vielleicht seine Freude gehabt! Wir hoffen, dass dies unseren heutigen Zuhörern die Zeit nahebringt, in der Improvisation und musikalische Rätselspiele fester Bestandteil eines Musikerlebens waren.

^menu Née en Israël, la flûtiste TAMI KRAUSZ se produit dans le monde entier en tant que spécialiste de la musique baroque, classique et romantique sur instruments historiques. Tami a vu naître son intérêt pour la musique ancienne et les pratiques d’exécution historiques durant ses études à l’Académie de musique de Tel-Aviv avec Yossi Arnheim et à Jérusalem avec Idit Shemer. Elle a reçu une bourse pour instrument (un traverso baroque de Rudolf Tutz) de la Fondation culturelle Amérique-Israël et une bourse d’études de l’organisation d’enseignement néerlandaise Nuffic pour poursuivre ses études auprès de Barthold Kuijken au Conservatoire royal de La Haye. Elle a obtenu son diplôme de soliste en musique ancienne cum laude en 2001.

Lauréate des concours de musique ancienne de Bruges et de Tel-Aviv, Tami a collaboré avec des ensembles tels que Le Concert de la Loge, l’Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, B’Rock, l’Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, le Holland Baroque, Das Kleine Konzert, Capriccio Stravagante, Les Inventions, Academia Daniel, Capella Cracoviensis, Capella Augustina et Le Cercle de l’Harmonie, sous la baguette notamment de Philippe Herreweghe, Ton Koopman, René Jacobs, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Raphaël Pichon et Richard Egarr. Parmi ses partenaires de musique de chambre, citons le violoniste Julien Chauvin, le contre-ténor Philippe Jaroussky et la soprano Sandrine Piau.

Tami a enregistré pour CPO, Brilliant Classics, Naïve, Aparté et Pentatone. Son solo dans la Symphonie concertante de François Devienne (Aparté, 2018) a reçu un accueil chaleureux de la presse.

Basée en Europe, elle est régulièrement invitée à donner des récitals et des master-classes dans le monde entier et est membre invité du jury du Conservatoire royal de La Haye.

La pianiste SHUANN CHAI est reconnue et louée pour ses interprétations sur pianos historiques et moderne. Elle compte, parmi ses professeurs, des maîtres tels que Claus-Christian Schuster, Norma Fisher et Anton Kuerti. Jeune pianiste, elle a également étudié avec Jack Radunsky, lui-même ancien étudiant du pianiste-compositeur de légende Percy Grainger. Ses leçons lui ont inculqué une profonde admiration pour les premiers enregistrements et la tradition romantique du jeu de piano. Avec ses encouragements, elle a été initiée au pianoforte lors d’une master-class donnée par Malcolm Bilson.

Ce sont les étincelles qui ont allumé le feu de sa passion pour les pianos anciens et l’interprétation historique expressive.

Elle a fait l’objet de critiques élogieuses dans des publications telles que Fanfare (« véritablement remarquable »), BBC Music Magazine et Classical Music Sentinel (« elle joue avec une détermination et une urgence qui font sonner la musique de Beethoven plus grande encore »). Au moment 20

du 250e anniversaire de Beethoven, en décembre 2020, elle aura atteint une étape importante dans son parcours avec l’interprétation des 35 sonates pour piano solo du compositeur ainsi que de ses œuvres pour violon et piano et pour violoncelle et piano. Parmi ses projets à venir, citons l’intégrale de la musique de chambre de Brahms pour violon, violoncelle et piano sur instruments historiques avec Shunske Sato et Hidemi Suzuki ainsi qu’une collaboration avec la photographe belgo-iranienne Mashid Mohadjerin, qui verra des photographies projetées de façon synchronisée avec une exécution live des Tableaux d’une exposition de Moussorgski.

Shuann éprouve une grande reconnaissance pour ses compagnons de route : un Steinway D signé par les légendes du jazz Herbie Hancock et Ahmad Jamal, un Érard original (1861) et un Rosenberger original (1820) généreusement prêté par le Nationaal Muziekinstrumenten Fonds (Pays-Bas).

La combinaison de la flûte et du piano était l’une des plus populaires à l’époque, les deux instruments étant parfaitement adaptés sur le plan sonore à l’ambiance intime des salons de musique aristocratiques. À partir du second quart du XIXe siècle, la flûte à une clef (dite « baroque ») évolua pour devenir un instrument de perce conique avec de nombreuses clefs, permettant de jouer les figures chromatiques et offrant de nouvelles possibilités sonores. Les pianos subirent également d’importants changements : les constructeurs étaient constamment à la recherche de façons d’élargir l’ambitus et le volume de l’instrument tout en expérimentant différentes pédales.

KÜHL, NICHT LAU Dans les dernières décennies du XVIIIe siècle, l’Europe continentale fut marquée par une instabilité générale. Au début du siècle suivant, les guerres endémiques et les bouleversements politiques perturbèrent tous les aspects la vie quotidienne, mais furent aussi le catalyseur de changements spectaculaires en littérature, dans les arts et la musique. Les compositeurs des centres culturels tels que Paris, Londres et Vienne en particulier s’efforcèrent de trouver de nouvelles voies d’expression musicale pour transmettre cette nouvelle esthétique. Le développement d’un large éventail de formes musicales, de possibilités tonales et harmoniques et d’un art profondément individualiste annonça l’avènement d’une nouvelle ère « romantique ».

L’expansion artistique s’accompagna d’innovations rapides dans la conception et dans la facture instrumentale, apportant de nouvelles possibilités sonores et techniques. Ces facteurs d’instruments – pour la plupart des musiciens amateurs issus de l’aristocratie et disposant d’importants moyens financiers – devinrent une puissance influente dans le milieu culturel européen. Jouer de la musique de chambre dans les salons privés, souvent accueillie et interprétée par ces amateurs accomplis, devint une activité à la mode parmi les Habsbourg et l’élite anglaise.

Ces développements dans la facture instrumentale sont clairement perceptibles dans la musique de l’époque. Cet album, qui couvre trois décennies très novatrices du XIXe siècle, illustre certains des aspects les plus significatifs de la musique pour flûte et piano.

Né dans une famille de musiciens militaires à Uelzen (Allemagne) en 1786, Friedrich Kuhlau perdit son œil droit dans son enfance, accident qui marqua son destin. Afin de le distraire pendant sa douloureuse et longue période de convalescence, ses parents lui offrirent un clavier. Montrant certaines dispositions, le jeune Friedrich s’installa à Hambourg pour y étudier le piano et le contrepoint avec Christian 22

sur des airs nationaux, des mélodies folkloriques et des chansons populaires. Ces thèmes empruntés et leurs textes originaux évoquent des émotions familières comme l’amour, la jalousie et le patriotisme et plaisaient beaucoup aux musiciens amateurs comme au public de la fin du XVIIIe et du XIXe siècle. Le Capriccio en ré mineur (op. 10b) provient d’un recueil de douze variations solos pour la flûte publié à Hambourg en 1810. Basé sur de célèbres airs folkloriques français et allemands, cet opus marque le début du lien durable que Kuhlau entretiendrait avec la flûte et jette les bases de son langage musical.

Schwencke, qui avait lui-même étudié auprès de Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach et de Johann Kirnberger. Quand Napoléon envahit la ville en 1810, Kuhlau s’enfuit à Copenhague et acquit la nationalité danoise trois ans plus tard. Il y gagna sa vie comme pianiste concertiste et jouit d’une grande popularité en tant que pédagogue, composant aussi occasionnellement de la musique pour la cour danoise. Nous connaissons surtout Kuhlau aujourd’hui pour son impressionnant œuvre de musique de chambre, dont la plupart des pièces comportent une partie de flûte.

Composer tant d’œuvres pour flûte lui valut le surnom de « Beethoven de la flûte ».

Curieusement, Kuhlau ne joua que rarement de cet instrument. Il écrivit dans une lettre en 1813 : « Je joue peu de cet instrument, mais je le connais parfaitement. » Non seulement il comprenait l’instrument d’une manière unique, mais sa façon d’écrire pour la flûte forgerait le répertoire de concert pour les générations à venir.

Caractérisées par des démonstrations de haute virtuosité combinées avec des passages lyriques et colorés, les œuvres de Kuhlau influencèrent indubitablement des compositeurs comme Fürstenau, Böhm, Köhler, Dorus et Taffanel.

Stylistiquement, le Capriccio est un clair précurseur de la Grande Sonate concertante en la mineur (op. 85), l’une des œuvres pour piano et flûte de Kuhlau les plus élaborées. Le caractère puissant et le geste dramatique de la sonate sont clairement inspirés par deux autres piliers du début de l’époque romantique : l’ouverture de concert Le Songe d’une nuit d’été de Mendelssohn et l’opéra Oberon de Carl Maria von Weber, œuvres que Kuhlau entendit pour la première fois peu avant de composer sa sonate en 1827.

Le premier mouvement s’ouvre avec un thème simple à l’atmosphère fragile et ardente, interrompu par une démonstration explosive de virtuosité. Ce constant passage d’un caractère extrême à l’autre est reflété dans le dialogue

Une partie importante de la production de Kuhlau – comme de celle de nombre de ses contemporains – consiste en des thèmes et variations, improvisations ou fantaisies basées 23

les deux compositeurs, bien qu’ils ne se rencontrèrent qu’une seule fois. Tous deux furent perçus comme des figures d’avant-garde à leur époque, tout en conservant un profond respect pour les fondements plus anciens de la composition et Bach, Händel et Mozart. Ils vécurent avec un handicap (Kuhlau n’avait qu’un œil et Beethoven perdit peu à peu l’ouïe) ; aucun des deux ne connut plus que des périodes de stabilité financière intermittentes et ils restèrent célibataires toute leur vie. Manquant souvent de grâce sociale, des lettres des deux hommes expriment leur agacement de devoir se mêler à l’aristocratie locale pour pouvoir traiter avec elle ; leur frustration face à l’incompétence des éditeurs de musique est également un thème récurrent. Plus important : les deux compositeurs développèrent un style musical unique incarnant la vision romantique de leur époque, peut-être mieux décrite par le poète et philosophe Friedrich Schlegel (1772-1829) : « une poésie universelle progressive […] c’est là son essence intime qu’elle ne puisse toujours que devenir et qu’elle ne puisse être achevée ».

Le second mouvement est un Scherzo vif avec une section en trio contrastante qui rappelle la valse, une invitation ouverte à danser et à explorer plus de liberté dans le rythme et le rubato. Le thème d’ouverture du troisième mouvement, Adagio, utilise un motif qui évoque la Marsch der Priester (Marche des prêtres) tirée de Die Zauberflöte de Mozart. Cette progression en accords partage à son tour des caractéristiques avec des compositeurs du début du XVIIIe siècle, en particulier Georg Friedrich Händel. Dans cet émouvant hommage à ses prédécesseurs, Kuhlau se joint à des compositeurs comme Beethoven, Schubert et Mendelssohn pour honorer et immortaliser la forme et le contrepoint baroques. L’observation du passé, suggérée par le thème humble, est ensuite ramenée au présent avec une série de variations élaborées dans le style italien lyrique du bel canto. La sonate s’achève avec un majestueux rondo de forme sonate qui réaffirme la grandeur de l’œuvre avec sa large tessiture et sa variété sonore. Le piano Rosenberger de cet enregistrement permet au pianiste d’utiliser le registre de « janissaire » (un mécanisme à tambour et grelots actionné par une pédale), qui offre un effet spectaculaire.

Malgré les nombreuses similitudes entre les vies des deux compositeurs, l’écriture pour flûte de Beethoven se montre la plus puissante dans ses symphonies, tandis que celle de Kuhlau est à son sommet dans sa musique de chambre. La production de Beethoven pour la flûte en tant qu’instrument de chambre ne comporte que

Kuhlau était un véritable admirateur des œuvres de Beethoven et un ardent défenseur de sa musique à l’étranger. On peut établir un certain nombre de parallèles intéressants entre 24

dixième symphonie, un sixième concerto pour piano, un concerto pour cor, des messes et un oratorio de la Passion, notamment) ainsi que des œuvres pour d’intéressantes combinaisons chambristes, comme des sonates pour deux pianos et quintette de flûtes. Parmi ces projets figure la mention d’une ouverture basée sur les notes allemandes B, A, C, H, une ode au compositeur que Beethoven qualifiait de « dieu immortel de l’harmonie ».

deux séries de variations basées sur des mélodies folkloriques, un Allegro et Menuet pour deux flûtes, une sonate en si bémol à la paternité douteuse, un trio pour flûte, basson et piano et la Sérénade op. 25, composée juste avant 1800 et destinée au trio flûte, violon et alto. Pour des raisons financières, Beethoven approuva à contrecœur un arrangement de la Sérénade pour flûte et piano, qui fut réalisé, sous sa supervision, par Franz Xaver Kleinheinz à Leipzig. Les doutes du compositeur quant à cette nouvelle version étaient provoqués par la crainte qu’un changement d’instrumentation ne mette en péril la stabilité et l’intégrité de l’œuvre. Publiée en 1843 comme l’opus 41 du compositeur, sa popularité (et probablement le bénéfice subséquent) contribua à dissiper ses réticences.

Le motif B, A, C, H (si bémol, la, do, si bécarre) dans une écriture canonique ou fuguée trouve son origine chez Johann Sebastian Bach lui-même et a depuis été repris par de nombreux compositeurs : son fils Johann Christian, Robert Schumann, Charles Ives et Max Reger, pour n’en citer que quelques-uns. Kuhlau composa lui-même de nombreux canons et fugues perpétuelles au cours de sa carrière. C’est peut-être en raison de sa filiation pédagogique directe avec le plus grand contrapuntiste – via ses professeurs Schwencke, Kirnberger et Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach – qu’il développa talent et réputation pour le genre. Plusieurs canons de Kuhlau apparaissent dans des numéros du périodique lipsien Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung sous forme de puzzles musicaux, et Kuhlau avait l’habitude d’échanger des « canons-puzzles » et d’autres énigmes canoniques avec ses amis versés dans ces plaisirs.

La lumineuse et vivante Sérénade est un témoin du style unique du jeune Beethoven : un caractère dynamique et inventif aux motifs précis et contrastés, bien loin des conventions.

Organisée comme un ensemble de six mouvements modelés sur le divertimento classique, la Sérénade se compose de thèmes dansants aux caractères changeants : galant, scherzo, pastoral, virtuose, poétique, humoristique.

Dans un carnet de notes datant de la dernière décennie de sa vie, Beethoven fit une liste d’œuvres à réaliser. Cette liste de « ce qui aurait pu être » mentionne des projets ambitieux (une 25

Beethoven également composa quelques douzaines de canons à plusieurs voix, dont la plupart étaient des souvenirs adressés aux membres de son cercle personnel et professionnel. La juxtaposition sur cet enregistrement d’œuvres de Beethoven et de Kuhlau est inspirée par le délicieux récit de leur première rencontre lors d’une chaude soirée de septembre 1825.

Après un dîner convivial et une balade dans la campagne, Kuhlau mit ses collègues présents au défi de composer un puzzle sur les notes B, A, C, H. Beethoven improvisa apparemment un canon à trois voix, mais le matin suivant, une note fut livrée à Kuhlau : « Je dois avouer que le champagne m’est monté un peu trop à la tête hier soir et qu’il m’a rendu bien plus confus qu’il n’a stimulé mon esprit ; car, s’il m’est généralement aisé de donner une réponse immédiate, je déclare que je n’ai aucun souvenir de ce que j’ai écrit hier soir… Ayez à l’occasion une pensée pour votre très dévoué, Beethoven. » La note était accompagnée de deux gages de l’affection de Beethoven : un petit portrait de lui-même ainsi que l’esquisse d’un nouveau canon, basé sur le même thème et avec ce texte : « Kühl, nicht lau » (frais, pas tiède), un jeu de mots sur le nom de Kuhlau.

Weimar, le thème B, A, C, H est présenté en courte fugue pour trois voix masculines, flûte et piano. Puisque Beethoven voulait que ce canon fût un geste aimable, peut-être aurait-il apprécié notre intervention. Nous espérons qu’elle permettra de rapprocher les auditeurs d’aujourd’hui d’une époque où l’improvisation et les blagues musicales faisaient partie intégrante de la vie des musiciens.
