The ensemble La Morra is widely known for interpretations of late medieval and early Renaissance repertories that ‘never fail to keep the listener’s attention alive’ (Gramophone).

Founded in 2000 at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, La Morra makes its home in Basel, the cultural capital of Switzerland. An international ensemble led by Corina Marti and Michał Gondko, it re-invents itself according to the requirements of the projects it undertakes.

La Morra has appeared at some of the most prestigious early music events worldwide, including Festival van Vlaanderen (Belgium), Early Music Season at the Forbidden City Concert Hall (China), Voix et Route Romane (France), Tage Alter Musik in Regensburg (Germany), Kilkenny Arts Festival (Ireland), Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht (the Netherlands), Oslo Internasjonale Kirkemusikkfestival (Norway), Actus Humanus (Poland), Freunde Alter Musik Basel (Switzerland) and Early Music Guild of Seattle (USA). ^menu poetic forms of the time – that is to this day considered one of the most remarkable phenomena in the history of music. This body of some 650 songs is notably Italian in character, a celebration of the newly vernacular spirit in both poetry and music.

MUSICAL CULTURE IN LATE MEDIEVAL FLORENCE Introduction From the fourteenth century and well into the Renaissance, the cultural and civic leaders of Florence, like those of a number of other Italian centres, spoke proudly of the accomplishments of their fellow Florentines, such illustrious names as Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) and Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527).

Florentines and others working or residing in the great city on the Arno in the decades around 1400 were especially aware of the value of their artistic heritage in promoting the city’s fame and reputation. In the cultural realm of literature and the arts, Florence’s contribution was most highly valued. Writing in the vernacular was never more celebrated than at that time in the works of the tre corone – the ‘three crowned heads’ of Italian literature, Dante Alighieri (1265–1321), Francesco Petrarca (1304–74) and Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–75) – which placed Florence at the forefront of medieval Europe’s cultured and literate society. As with poetry, so with music, it was during this same period that, for the first time, Italy joined France and England in exalting its greatest cultural achievements.

The broad repertory of fourteenth- and fifteenthcentury polyphony comes into focus in this CD within the specific context of manuscript production and cultural climate in late medieval Florence. This can be described as a bipartite tradition: on the one hand, the exclusivity and ‘intellectualism’ of an elite poetic-musical circle preserving its artistic output; on the other, popularising tendencies associated with varied musical responses to poetic innovations. Nothing could better demonstrate the multifaceted quality of the literary and musical scene at the beginning of the fifteenth century than the juxtaposition of two important contemporary testimonies: the Liber Saporecti of Simone Prodenzani (d. c.1440) and the Paradiso degli Alberti of Giovanni Gherardi da Prato (c.1360/67–1446). The former, very likely completed in Florence around 1415 and regarded as the most important descriptive source for the performance of vocal and instrumental music in late medieval Italy, dazzles us with its display of the range and breadth of music familiar at the time.

This CD celebrates Florence’s artistic climate in the first two decades of the fifteenth century and its splendid late medieval musical tradition from the century stretching from the 1320s to the 1420s, referred to as the Trecento. This period presented contemporaries and future generations with a sizeable repertory of ballatas, madrigals and caccias – the principal musico-

The music described – and specifically cited – by these witnesses is both older and recent. Most of it celebrates the accomplishments of the Trecento, made concrete in an epithet describing one of the revered classic songs as ‘ben che sia antico è molto buono’ 7

(‘very good, although it is old’). Here is the creed that must have fuelled Florentine tastes of those years and that serves to remind us of the motivating force behind the collecting zeal of early fifteenth-century Florentine anthologies. Sollazzo, the court musician featured in Prodenzani’s work, enlivens the Christmas season with Florentine art songs – especially settings of poetry by the most representative authors, Francesco Petrarca, Giovanni Boccaccio, Franco Sacchetti (1332–1400) and Cino Rinuccini (c.1350–1417), some sacred music and a most fitting repertory of songs and dances. In fashioning his ‘court musician,’ we assume that Prodenzani reflected the variety he encountered in the soundscape of the city and that can indeed be reconstructed from surviving musical and poetic sources, although not from any single collection – some forty works are cited by title and survive in manuscripts of the period, and a remarkably high number are in Florentine anthologies, including the recently discovered source represented in this CD. Today the Liber Saporecti helps us recognise the correspondence between manuscript production and its Florentine cultural context.

Codex (c.1410–15); of particular importance is its unprecedented coverage of songs. Its compilers collected the complete works of prominent native composers, both past and present, eliminating songs with French texts. In the process, they sought to correct errors and to complete texts, and aimed at thoroughness, especially in musical settings of texts by the poets Franco Sacchetti, Giovanni Boccaccio and Niccolò Soldanieri (d. 1385). It must have been cultural pride that inspired the gathering and careful editing of the literary and musical achievements of the Trecento, and in this masterfully prepared anthology an unblemished record could serve generations to come as testimony to the city’s self-awareness and acquisition of stylistic consciousness.

The anthologising intensity of the Squarcialupi Codex, surely reflecting a specifically Florentine celebration of the musical and poetic glories of the city’s fourteenth-century legacy, was matched by a contemporary manuscript that is at the centre of this project, the San Lorenzo Palimpsest, which at once mirrors the retrospective attitude already seen towards the past and captures something brilliantly new: the previously unknown works of Florentine composers and others active during the early fifteenth century.

The most beautifully executed Florentine music manuscripts of the Trecento fit precisely into this context: they are in most regards representative of a high art tradition – mostly Florentine, but also including other north Italian compositions as well as works brought from areas beyond the Alps during the period of the Great Schism (1378–1418). also includes different natural science projects that allow the application of up-to-date methods for the analysis of manuscripts. One of the CSMC’s projects is dedicated to the recovery of lost writing in manuscripts that has become illegible owing to different types of damage. In our case, the music of the San Lorenzo Palimpsest was erased intentionally so that the parchment could be recycled.

Recovering music from the San Lorenzo Palimpsest Of the medieval music manuscript discoveries of the recent past, perhaps the most unexpected and intriguing is the palimpsest volume discovered at the church of San Lorenzo in Florence in the early 1980s. Manuscript 2211 at the church of San Lorenzo now bears the title ‘Campione de’ Beni del 1504’ and details the acquisition and rental of properties managed by the church up to and beyond the year 1504 (see the cover of the manuscript on p. 6). Interest in the San Lorenzo Palimpsest stems from the fact that all of its surviving 111 parchment leaves reveal traces of its original function: in the second decade of the fifteenth century, the volume was compiled as a sizeable collection of late medieval polyphonic music. Near the end of that century, the music manuscript was unbound, its leaves scraped clean of music and text, and then most of the source was assembled and rebound as it began its reincarnation as an administrative ledger. An example of how the manuscript’s leaves appear today can be seen on p. 10. As such, certainly, it was impossible to read the musical contents, which were considered lost, until in 2013 a state-of-the-art imaging project was made possible by the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) at the University of Hamburg.

In June 2013 scholars and scientists from the CSMC brought a high-resolution multispectral camera from Hamburg to the chapter archive of the church of San Lorenzo in Florence to image the full manuscript over a two-week period. A multispectral camera allows one to photograph each leaf of a manuscript under separate colours of light (including both the visible and invisible spectra).

The resulting image data is then processed using a sophisticated software application that was originally created to analyse satellite imagery and employs statistical procedures that utilise differences in the multiple images to create a new, combined image that shows differing amounts of the underwriting (music) and overwriting (later text), as seen on pp. 11, 31, and 40. The outcome of the process always results in images that do not show a manuscript’s original colours; therefore, these are called pseudo-colour images, which serve to enhance the readability of the original music and separate it from the non-musical overwriting.

By these means, multispectral imaging has produced previously unimaginable results enabling us to see the largely destroyed music and text, going well beyond what had been possible with simpler means, and allowing for outstanding visibility in the final enhanced published images. Andreas Janke’s and John Nádas’s 2016 publications provided an introductory study, analysis and transcriptions of the previously unknown works, as well as pseudo-colour images of the entire source, constituting the virtual recovery of a lost codex, and offering readings of its original musical content that make possible further scholarly study.

Italy, Austria, Germany and other international centres.

With its newly visible contents, the San Lorenzo Palimpsest informs us of the way an era of Italian musicmaking was drawing to a close, together with interest in the art of the French-influenced international style.

The impetus, as noted above, for the assemblage of such a collection, in the absence of a scholarly university tradition or courtly milieu, seems to have been the continued expression of Florentine pride in native Italian polyphonic composition allied with the cultivation of some of the most international repertory available in the early decades of the fifteenth century.

Contents and performance The San Lorenzo Palimpsest consists of more than 200 songs, among them those of known Trecento composers such as Jacopo da Bologna (fl. 1340–60), Paolo da Firenze (1355–1436) and Antonio Zacara da Teramo (c.1360–1416). Most interestingly, and a focus of the present recording, it encompasses previously unknown music by the Florentines Giovanni and Piero Mazzuoli (father and son), offering us an invaluable opportunity for a fresh examination of music in Florence in the decades surrounding the year 1400. Remarkable, too, is the inclusion of transalpine songs and a collection of motets, which may have made their way to Florence from the Councils of Pisa (1409) and possibly Constance (1414–18) and the Francophile courts of Pavia and Padua. This large repertory of anonymous songs, as well as those by the French poet-composer Guillaume de Machaut (c.1300–77) and his contemporaries, is also found in collections from northern

The pieces recorded here, are representative of this huge music collection which, even in its present incomplete state, includes 216 compositions by the earlier generation of composers such as Giovanni da Cascia (fl. 1340–50) and Jacopo da Bologna, as well as those of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, especially Florentines. Although many works can be found in other Trecento music manuscripts, included here – and recorded for the first time – are seven unique to this source (tracks 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 10, and 12). Of particular interest are the works of the previously unknown composers, the Mazzuoli, employed at the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.

Giovanni Mazzuoli was an organist by profession, and greatly admired by his contemporaries. He was employed by different Florentine institutions, perhaps most importantly the lay confraternity of Orsanmichele, where he is documented for the first time in 12

that some composers created both text and music. In the case of Splendor da ciel, one could even imagine placing the ballata in the context of commissioned works, those ordered for a specific occasion or, as in this case, dedicated to a specific person: ‘Lisa’ is named in the marginal note in Sacchetti’s autograph, but is also cited in the first line of the poem.

His secular music included on this CD, however, was certainly not performed during services at the cathedral, but presumably on more private occasions. It is possible, though, that some of his musical settings were combined with new texts for performance by lay confraternities – such as Orsanmichele – in honour of the Virgin Mary. Giovanni’s son Piero (1386–1430) has long been known to be an organist as well, in addition to being a notary and judge. Like his father he performed as an organist in different places, including the church of San Lorenzo and the confraternity of Orsanmichele, and finally succeeded his father in his post at the cathedral. His compositional style differs from that of his father and can be best understood by listening to and comparing the three pieces by each on this recording.

The San Lorenzo Palimpsest is the work of only one scribe. It differs from the luxurious and more narrowly focused Squarcialupi Codex in appearing to be a private collection. While we do not yet know the name of the compiler and first owner of the volume, we can say with a degree of assurance that someone such as Piero Mazzuoli could well have been the scribe, someone with an interest in both the specifically Florentine musical tradition and imported repertories.

One of the most attractive pieces is Giovanni Mazzuoli’s Splendor da ciel, the text for which is by the well-known Florentine poet Franco Sacchetti, known to have collaborated on occasion with the composers.

There is a note accompanying Sacchetti’s autograph of this poem held at the Laurentian Library in Florence that reads ‘Ballatella di Franco fatta per uno giovine che amava Lisa,’ which translates literally as ‘Ballatella [poem] by Franco made for a young man who loved Lisa’. We could assume a typical situation here in which a poet first creates a text, perhaps on commission, which is then set to music by a composer. In many such cases the poet is unknown, as in the instance of the texts that were set to music by Piero; it is possible

Many steps had to be taken to bring the music presented on this CD to sonic life, from making it visible to identifying, editing and performing it. However, other elements, especially performance conventions, cannot be determined by studying the manuscript evidence, which fails to provide information regarding instruments and how they might have been used, or the number and nature of the voices and/or instrumentalists involved. A large proportion of our ideas regarding performance practices comes, in fact, from literary descriptions – such as those in the Liber Saporecti – or visual depictions, especially in frescoes and illuminated manuscripts of the period.

Here the musicians of La Morra have added their invaluable expertise and imagination to the task of bringing the music to life. Some works on this CD are performed purely vocally, as was probably the Italian convention (6, 10, 12, 14, and 15). Most performances, however, combine voices and instruments in inspiring ways. The San Lorenzo Palimpsest often transmits the complete music, but not the complete poetic text of a piece. In such cases, the resulting lacunae in the formal scheme of the work were filled with the music of the relevant sections played on instruments (e.g. 1 and 7).

Elsewhere, parts of the music are used as preludes and interludes. Lastly, purely instrumental performance was the choice for works transmitted textless in the San Lorenzo Palimpsest except for their incipits (2, 11), but also for works where the text has survived, but which were found by the performers to function brilliantly as instrumental pieces.

contratenors, although those parts are known from other sources). It is probably mainly due to the perspective of later centuries on the music that the tenor is often perceived as an accompanying voice, and it is remarkable that in some manuscripts the tenor is handed down solely untexted. For Poc’ hanno di mirar La Morra proposes a rendering which deliberately reverses the poles by making the tenor the only texted part, doubling it at the octave, and even treating it as a non-mensural monophonic song – sounds that Florentines would have been familiar with.

In Paolo’s Amor mi stringe assai, a contratenor part was intended, but not inserted, in a concordant manuscript; Michał Gondko has created a contratenor part for this recording. The contratenor parts are remarkable for the ways in which they enhance the sonorities and greater movement of the polyphonic texture (for example as evidenced in the rondeau Soiez liez – which for the first time we have surviving notation for that part in the San Lorenzo Palimpsest, see p. 15). However, a contratenor part was often optional; the parts considered essential for a polyphonic piece were the cantus and the tenor (many French works in the San Lorenzo Palimpsest were entered without their 14

MUSIKKULTUR IM SPÄTMITTELALTERLICHEN FLORENZ Einführung Seit dem 14. Jahrhundert und bis weit in die Renaissance hinein sprachen die Kultur- und Stadtoberhäupter von Florenz und anderer italienischer Zentren stolz über die Errungenschaften ihrer florentinischen Landsleute, darunter illustre Namen wie Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) und Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527).

Florentiner und andere, die in den Jahren um 1400 in der bedeutsamen Stadt am Arno arbeiteten oder wohnten, waren sich des Wertes ihres künstlerischen Erbes bei der Förderung von Ruhm und Ansehen der Stadt besonders bewusst. Im kulturellen Bereich der Literatur und Kunst wurde der Beitrag von Florenz am meisten geschätzt. Das Schreiben in der Volkssprache wurde zu keinem Zeitpunkt mehr zelebriert als damals in den Werken der »drei Kronen« – Dante Alighieri (1265–1321), Francesco Petrarca (1304–74) und Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–75) –, was Florenz in den Mittelpunkt der kultivierten und gebildeten Gesellschaft des mittelalterlichen Europas rückte. Bei der Gestaltung seines Hofmusikers gehen wir davon aus, dass Prodenzani die Vielfalt widerspiegelte, der er in der Klanglandschaft der Stadt begegnet ist und die in der Tat aus überlieferten musikalischen und poetischen Quellen rekonstruiert werden kann, wenn auch nicht aus einer einzigen Sammlung – etwa 40 Werke werden nach Titeln zitiert und sind in Manuskripten dieser Zeit überliefert. Zudem ist eine bemerkenswert hohe Zahl in florentinischen Anthologien enthalten, einschließlich der kürzlich entdeckten Quelle, die in dieser CD vorgestellt wird. Heute hilft uns der Liber Saporecti, den Zusammenhang zwischen

Die wunderschön ausgeführten florentinischen Musikhandschriften des Trecento passen genau in diesen Kontext: Sie sind in vielerlei Hinsicht repräsentativ für eine hohe Kunsttradition und enthalten meist florentinische, aber auch andere norditalienische Kompositionen sowie Werke, die aus der Zeit des großen Schismas (1378–1418) von jenseits der Alpen stammen. Die Zusammenstellung weltlicher Liedsammlungen gipfelte in dem aufwendig gestalteten und umfangreichen sogenannten SquarcialupiCodex (ca. 1410–15). Von besonderer Bedeutung ist dessen beispiellose Bandbreite an Liedern. Seine Kompilierer sammelten die kompletten Werke prominenter einheimischer Komponisten, sowohl aus der Vergangenheit als auch der Gegenwart, wobei sie alle Lieder mit französischen Texten ausschlossen.

Dabei versuchten sie, Fehler zu korrigieren und Texte zu vervollständigen und strebten nach Gründlichkeit, insbesondere in den Vertonungen der Texte der Dichter Franco Sacchetti, Giovanni Boccaccio und Niccolò Soldanieri (gest. 1385). Es muss Stolz auf die eigene Kultur gewesen sein, der das Sammeln und sorgfältige Edieren der literarisch-musikalischen Errungenschaften des Trecento inspirierte: In dieser meisterhaft angelegten Anthologie würde eine makellose Aufzeichnung den nachfolgenden Generationen als Zeugnis für das Selbst- und Stilbewusstsein der Stadt dienen.

Die anthologisierende Intensität des SquarcialupiCodex, die sicherlich eine spezifisch florentinische Sicht der musikalischen und poetischen Errungenschaften der Stadt aus dem 14. Jahrhundert widerspiegelt, ist vergleichbar mit der eines Manuskripts aus derselben Zeit, das im Mittelpunkt dieses Projekts steht: das San-Lorenzo-Palimpsest. Dieses repräsentiert die retrospektive Haltung gegenüber der Vergangenheit und fängt zugleich etwas großartig Neues ein: die bisher unbekannten Kompositionen florentinischer und anderer Musiker, die im frühen 15. Jahrhundert aktiv waren. Der Umschlag dieser CD zeigt den Beginn der letzten Abteilung des Squarcialupi-Codex, die für die Lieder des Florentiner Komponisten Giovanni Mazzuoli (um 1350/61–1426) vorgesehen war, jedoch bis auf ein einziges Bild, das Giovanni bei der Ausübung seines Berufs als Organist zeigt, leer geblieben ist (siehe Bild auf der Innenseite der CD-Hülle). Seine Musik war völlig unbekannt, bis sie aus dem San-LorenzoPalimpsest wiederhergestellt werden konnte.

Das Interesse am San-Lorenzo-Palimpsest rührt daher, dass alle erhaltenen 111 Pergamentblätter Spuren seiner ursprünglichen Funktion offenbaren: in der zweiten Dekade des 15. Jahrhunderts wurde der Band als eine umfangreiche Sammlung spätmittelalterlicher polyphoner Musik angelegt. Gegen Ende des Jahrhunderts wurde die Bindung des Musikmanuskripts aufgelöst, Musik und Text wurden sauber von den Blättern geschabt, dann wurde der größte Teil der Quelle neu gebunden und ihre »Reinkarnation« als Immobilienregister begann. Ein Beispiel dafür, wie die Blätter des Manuskripts heute aussehen, ist auf S. 10 zu finden. Derart war es ohne Frage weitgehend unmöglich, die musikalischen Inhalte zu lesen. Sie galten als verloren, bis 2013 die Anwendung moderner Bildgebungsverfahren durch den Sonderforschungsbereich 950, Manuskriptkulturen in Asien, Afrika und Europa (SFB 950) an der Universität Hamburg ermöglicht wurde.

Wiederherstellen der Musik aus dem San-LorenzoPalimpsest Von den Funden mittelalterlicher Musikmanuskripte in der jüngeren Vergangenheit ist der vielleicht unerwartetste und faszinierendste die Palimpsesthandschrift, die in den frühen 1980er Jahren in der Kirche San Lorenzo in Florenz entdeckt wurde. Das Manuskript 2211 in der Kirche San Lorenzo trägt nun den Titel »Campione de’ Beni del 1504« und beschreibt den Erwerb und die Vermietung von Immobilien, die von der Kirche bis 1504 und darüber hinaus verwaltet

Der SFB 950 bringt Manuskriptforscher aus verschiedenen Disziplinen für die vergleichende Forschung zusammen und beherbergt zudem mehrere naturwissenschaftliche Projekte, die die Anwendung moderner Methoden zur Analyse von Manuskripten ermöglichen. Eines der Projekte des SFB 950 ist der Wiederherstellung verlorener Schriften in Manuskripten gewidmet, die aufgrund verschiedener Arten von Schäden unleserlich geworden sind. In unserem Fall wurde die Musik des San-Lorenzo-Palimpsest bewusst gelöscht, damit das Pergament wiederverwendet werden konnte.

Im Juni 2013 brachten Geistes- und Naturwissenschaftler des SFB 950 eine hochauflösende Multispektralkamera aus Hamburg in das Kapitelarchiv der Kirche San Lorenzo in Florenz, um das gesamte Manuskript über einen Zeitraum von zwei Wochen abzulichten. Eine Multispektralkamera ermöglicht es, jedes Blatt eines Manuskripts unter separaten Lichtquellen (einschließlich der sichtbaren und unsichtbaren Spektren) zu fotografieren.

und gestattet eine hervorragende Sichtbarkeit in den letztendlich veröffentlichten Falschfarbenbildern. Die Publikationen von Andreas Janke und John Nádas aus dem Jahr 2016 enthalten eine einführende Studie, Analyse und Transkriptionen der bisher unbekannten Werke, sowie Falschfarbenbilder der gesamten Quelle, die die virtuelle Wiederherstellung eines verlorenen Kodex darstellen und das Entziffern des ursprünglichen musikalischen Inhalts und schließlich weitere wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen erlauben.

Die resultierenden Bilddaten werden dann unter Verwendung einer ausgefeilten Softwareanwendung verarbeitet, die ursprünglich zur Analyse von Satellitenaufnahmen entwickelt wurde und mit Hilfe von statistischen Verfahren auf der Grundlage von Unterschieden in den Einzelbildern ein neues, kombiniertes Bild erzeugt, in dem verschiedene Anteile der unteren Schriftebene (Musik) und der Überschreibung (späterer Text) sichtbar werden, wie z. B. auf den Seiten 11, 31 und 40 zu sehen ist.

Inhalt und Ausführung Das San-Lorenzo-Palimpsest besteht aus mehr als 200 Liedern, darunter bekannte Trecento-Komponisten wie Jacopo da Bologna (fl. 1340–60), Paolo da Firenze (1355–1436) und Antonio Zacara da Teramo (ca. 1360–1416). Besonders interessant und ein Schwerpunkt dieser Aufnahme sind die bisher unbekannten Kompositionen der Florentiner Giovanni und Piero Mazzuoli (Vater und Sohn), die uns eine unschätzbare Gelegenheit für eine neue Auseinandersetzung mit der Musik in Florenz in den Jahrzehnten um das Jahr 1400 bieten. Bemerkenswert ist auch die Einbeziehung transalpiner Lieder und einer Sammlung von Motetten, die von den Konzilen von Pisa (1409) und möglicherweise Konstanz (1414–18) sowie den frankophilen Höfen von Pavia und Padua nach Florenz gelangt sind. Dieses umfangreiche Repertoire anonymer Lieder sowie jenes des französischen Dichters und Komponisten Guillaume de Machaut (ca. 1300–77) und seiner Zeitgenossen sind auch in Sammlungen aus Norditalien, Österreich, Deutsch-

Sie dienen dazu, die Lesbarkeit der ursprünglich eingetragenen Musik zu verbessern und sie von der nicht-musikalischen oberen Schriftebene zu trennen.

Auf diese Weise haben multispektrale Aufnahmen bisher unvorstellbare Ergebnisse hervorgebracht, die es uns ermöglichen, die weitgehend zerstörte Musik und den Text zu sehen. Das Resultat geht weit über das hinaus, was mit einfacheren Mitteln möglich war 20

land und anderen internationalen Zentren zu finden.

Durch seine erneut sichtbar gemachten Inhalte gibt uns das San-Lorenzo-Palimpsest Aufschluss über das Ende einer Epoche italienischen Musikschaffens und das Interesse an der Kunst des französisch geprägten internationalen Stils. Der Anstoß für das Erstellen einer solchen Sammlung scheint in Anbetracht des Fehlens einer wissenschaftlichen Universitätstradition oder eines höfischen Milieus der fortgesetzte Ausdruck des florentinischen Stolzes auf die italienische polyphone Komposition gewesen zu sein, verbunden mit der Pflege eines internationalen Repertoires aus den ersten Jahrzehnten des 15. Jahrhunderts.

bei verschiedenen florentinischen Institutionen Anstellungen, unter anderem bei der Laienbruderschaft von Orsanmichele, wo er 1376 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wurde, und ab 1401 an der Florentiner Kathedrale. Seine weltliche Musik, die auf dieser CD zu hören ist, wurde jedoch sicherlich nicht während des Gottesdienstes im Dom aufgeführt, sondern vermutlich eher in kleineren, privaten Kreisen. Es ist aber denkbar, dass einige seiner Vertonungen von Laienbruderschaften (wie jener in Orsanmichele) mit neuen Texten zu Ehren der Jungfrau Maria versehen wurden.

Giovannis Sohn Piero (1386–1430) war ebenfalls Organist, aber daneben auch Notar und Richter. Wie sein Vater war er als Organist an verschiedenen Orten aktiv, wie der Kirche San Lorenzo und der Bruderschaft von Orsanmichele, bevor er schließlich seinem Vater am Dom nachfolgte. Sein kompositorischer Stil unterscheidet sich von dem seines Vaters und kann am besten nachvollzogen werden, wenn man die drei Stücke von jedem der beiden auf dieser Aufnahme hört und vergleicht.

Die hier aufgenommenen Stücke sind repräsentativ für diese riesige Musiksammlung, die selbst in ihrem gegenwärtigen unvollständigen Zustand 216 Kompositionen enthält, sowohl der früheren Generation von Komponisten wie Giovanni da Cascia (fl. 1340–60) und Jacopo da Bologna, als auch jener des späten 14. und frühen 15. Jahrhunderts, vor allem aus Florenz. Während viele Kompositionen auch in anderen Musikmanuskripten des Trecento überliefert sind, sind hier sieben nur in dieser Quelle enthaltene zum ersten Mal eingespielt worden (1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 10 und 12). Von besonderem Interesse sind dabei die Werke der bisher unbekannten Komponisten: Giovanni und Piero Mazzuoli, die in der Florentiner Kathedrale Santa Maria del Fiore angestellt waren.

Eines der attraktivsten Stücke ist Giovanni Mazzuolis Splendor da ciel, dessen Text von dem bekannten Florentiner Poeten Franco Sacchetti stammt, von dem bekannt ist, dass er gelegentlich mit Komponisten zusammenarbeitete. In Sacchettis autographem Gedichtband, der heute in der Bilbioteca Medicea Laurentiana in Florenz aufbewahrt wird, ist folgende Notiz enthalten: »Ballatella di Franco fatta per uno giovine che amava Lisa« (»Ballatella [Gedicht] von Franco für einen jungen Mann, der Lisa liebte«). Man könnte hier von

werden, die keine Informationen über Instrumente und deren Verwendung oder die Anzahl und Art der beteiligten Stimmen beziehungsweise Instrumentalisten liefern. Ein großer Teil unserer Vorstellungen von den Aufführungspraktiken stammt tatsächlich aus literarischen Beschreibungen – wie jenen im Liber Saporecti – oder visuellen Darstellungen, insbesondere solchen in Fresken und illuminierten Handschriften jener Zeit.

einer typischen Situation ausgehen, in der zunächst ein Dichter, vielleicht auf Wunsch, einen Text erstellt, der dann von einem Komponisten vertont wird. In vielen solchen Fällen ist der Dichter unbekannt, wie in den von Piero Mazzuoli vertonten Texten; es ist aber sehr wahrscheinlich, dass einige Komponisten sowohl Text als auch Musik schrieben. Im Falle von Splendor da ciel ist es sogar vorstellbar, die Ballata in den Kontext von Auftragsarbeiten zu stellen, die für einen bestimmten Anlass bestellt wurden oder, wie in diesem Fall, einer bestimmten Person gewidmet sind: ›Lisa‹ wird sowohl in der Randnotiz von Sacchettis Autograph als auch in der ersten Zeile des Gedichts genannt.

Hier haben die Musiker von La Morra ihre unschätzbare Expertise und Vorstellungskraft in die Aufgabe eingebracht, die Musik zum Leben zu erwecken. Einige Werke auf dieser CD werden rein vokal ausgeführt, wie es wahrscheinlich auch die italienische Konvention war (6, 10, 12, 14 und 15). Die meisten Aufführungen kombinieren jedoch Gesang und Instrumente auf inspirierende Weise. Das SanLorenzo-Palimpsest enthält oft die vollständige Musik, aber nicht immer den kompletten poetischen Text eines Stückes. Derart enstandene Lücken wurden mit der entsprechenden Musik rein instrumental gespielt, um das formale Schema der jeweiligen Gattung zu erhalten (z. B. in 1 und 7). An anderen Stellen werden Teile der Musik als Vor- und Zwischenspiele verwendet. Die rein instrumentale Ausführung wurde schließlich für Werke gewählt, die im San-LorenzoPalimpsest ohne Text beziehungsweise nur mit ihrem jeweiligen Incipits überliefert sind (2, 11), aber auch für Kompositionen, für die der Text zwar eingetragen ist, die aber von den Interpreten als hervorragende Instrumentalstücke empfunden wurden.

Das San-Lorenzo-Palimpsest ist das Werk von nur einem Schreiber. Es unterscheidet sich vom luxuriösen und enger fokussierten Squarcialupi-Codex darin, dass es eine eher persönliche Sammlung zu sein scheint.

Während wir den Namen des Kompilierers und ersten Besitzers des Bandes noch nicht kennen, können wir mit einiger Sicherheit sagen, dass jemand wie Piero Mazzuoli durchaus der Schreiber gewesen sein könnte – jemand, der sich sowohl für die spezifisch florentinische Musiktradition als auch für fremdes Repertoire interessierte.

Viele Schritte mussten unternommen werden, um die auf dieser CD präsentierte Musik zum Klingen zu bringen: vom Sichtbarmachen über das Identifizieren, Edieren bis hin zum Aufführen. Andere Elemente, insbesondere Aufführungskonventionen, können jedoch nicht durch das Studium der Manuskripte ermittelt 22

Für Paolo da Firenzes Amor mi stringe assai war in einem konkordanten Musikmanuskript ein Contratenor vorgesehen, aber nicht eingetragen.

Michał Gondko hat daher für diese Aufnahme einen eigenen Contratenor hinzugefügt. Contratenorstimmen können auf bemerkenswerte Art und Weise die Klangfülle und größere Bewegung der polyphonen Textur verstärken, wie zum Beispiel im Rondeau Soiez liez, für das erstmalig ein Contratenor im San-LorenzoPalimpsest überliefert ist (S. 15). Ein Contratenor war jedoch meist optional. Als wesentliche Stimmen galten Cantus und Tenor (viele französische Kompositionen im San-Lorenzo-Palimpsest wurden ohne Contratenorstimmen eingetragen, obwohl diese in anderen Quellen vorhanden sind). Es ist wohl vor allem durch den Blickwinkel auf die Musik späterer Jahrhunderte, dass der Tenor häufig als Begleitstimme wahrgenommen wird und bemerkenswerterweise ist der Tenor in manchen Handschriften ausschließlich untextiert überliefert. In Poc’ hanno di mirar schlägt La Morra eine Wiedergabe vor, die die Pole absichtlich umkehrt, in dem nur der Tenor allein mit Text gesungen und dazu in der Oktave gedoppelt wird. Er wird somit gewissermaßen wie ein nicht-mensurales monophones Lied behandelt – Klänge, die die Florentiner gekannt haben dürften. .

formes musicales et poétiques de l’époque – fut constitué alors, considéré aujourd’hui encore comme l’un des phénomènes les plus remarquables de l’histoire de la musique. Ce corpus de quelque 650 chansons est d’un caractère remarquablement italien et incarne la célébration du nouvel esprit vernaculaire, à la fois dans la poésie et dans la musique.

Introduction À partir du XIVe siècle et certainement à la Renaissance, les responsables culturels et municipaux de Florence, à l’instar de ceux de nombreux autres centres italiens, parlaient avec fierté des réalisations de leurs illustres compatriotes florentins, tels Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) et Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527). Les Florentins et les personnes qui travaillaient ou résidaient dans la grande cité sur l’Arno vers 1400 étaient très conscients de la valeur de leur héritage artistique pour la réputation de la ville. Dans le domaine de la littérature et des arts, l’apport florentin était particulièrement apprécié. L’écriture en langue vernaculaire ne fut jamais autant célébrée que dans les œuvres des « Trois Couronnes » – Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) et Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) –, plaçant Florence à l’avant-garde de la société cultivée de l’Europe médiévale. Avec la poésie comme avec la musique, c’est à cette époque que, pour la première fois, l’Italie rejoignit la France et l’Angleterre dans la célébration de leurs plus grandes réalisations culturelles.

Pour cet enregistrement, le vaste répertoire polyphonique du XIVe et du XVe siècle est mis en lumière dans le contexte spécifique de la production manuscrite et du climat culturel de la Florence de la fin du Moyen Âge. Ce contexte peut être dépeint comme une tradition bipartite : d’une part, le caractère exclusif et l’« intellectualisme » d’un cercle élitaire poétique et musical qui tâche de préserver sa production artistique ; d’autre part, les tendances à la popularisation associées aux différentes réponses musicales apportées aux innovations poétiques. Rien ne pouvait mieux illustrer la multiplicité de la scène littéraire et musicale du début du XVe siècle que la juxtaposition de deux « témoins » contemporains importants : le Liber Saporecti de Simone Prodenzani (mort vers 1440) et Paradiso degli Alberti de Giovanni Gherardi da Prato (ca 1360/1367-1446). Le premier, très probablement achevé à Florence vers 1415 et considéré comme la source descriptive la plus importante pour l’exécution de la musique vocale et instrumentale italienne de la fin du Moyen Âge, nous offre un éventail complet de la musique connue à l’époque.

Cet enregistrement témoigne du climat artistique qui régnait dans les deux premières décennies du XVe siècle et de l’extraordinaire tradition musicale de la fin du Moyen Âge, au siècle que l’on nomme le Trecento (ca 1320-1420). Un important répertoire de ballate, de madrigali et de caccie – les principales 25

contexte : à de nombreux égards, ils sont représentatifs d’une haute tradition artistique – principalement florentine, mais ils reprennent également des compositions de l’Italie du Nord et même d’au-delà des Alpes, importées durant la période du Grand Schisme (1378-1418). De par sa portée et son agencement, le Codex Squarcialupi (ca 1410-1415) constitue un point culminant dans l’art de la compilation de collections de chansons profanes ; la couverture des chansons est de toute première importance. Ses compilateurs collectèrent les œuvres complètes de compositeurs locaux importants, morts et vivants, écartant les chansons aux textes français. Ils cherchèrent à corriger les erreurs et à compléter les textes avec une grande minutie, en particulier dans la mise en musique de textes des poètes Franco Sacchetti, Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) et Niccolò Soldanieri (mort en 1385). C’est probablement la fierté culturelle qui inspira cette compilation et cette édition soignée des réalisations littéraires et musicales du Trecento, témoignage de la « conscience de soi » et de l’acquisition d’un sens du style par la ville.

Les pièces contenues dans ces deux sources sont pour certaines récentes et pour d’autres plus anciennes.

La plupart des œuvres témoignent des réalisations du Trecento, illustrées par une épithète qui qualifie ainsi l’une des célèbres chansons : « ben che sia antico è molto buono » (« bien qu’ancienne, elle est très bonne »).

Voici le credo qui a dû nourrir le goût florentin de l’époque et qui nous rappelle aujourd’hui la force motrice à l’œuvre derrière le zèle collectionniste des anthologies florentines du Quattrocento. Sollazzo, le musicien de cour présenté dans l’œuvre de Prodenzani, embellit la saison de Noël avec des chansons classiques florentines – en particulier des mises en musique de poèmes des auteurs les plus représentatifs que sont Francesco Petrarca, Giovanni Boccaccio, Franco Sacchetti (1332-1400) et Cino Rinuccini (ca 1350-1417) –, de la musique sacrée et un répertoire de chansons et de danses particulièrement approprié. On peut supposer qu’en concevant son « musicien de cour », Prodenzani désirait refléter la variété du paysage sonore de la ville, paysage qui peut effectivement être reconstitué à partir des sources musicales et poétiques conservées – quelque 40 œuvres sont citées par leur titre et survivent dans des manuscrits de l’époque, dont un nombre remarquablement élevé sont reprises dans des anthologies florentines, y compris le manuscrit récemment redécouvert présenté ici. Aujourd’hui, le Liber Saporecti nous permet de relier la production manuscrite à son contexte culturel florentin.

L’intensité du processus d’anthologisation du Codex Squarcialupi, qui illustre certainement une célébration spécifiquement florentine des gloires musicales et poétiques du XIVe siècle, est égalée par celle du manuscrit contemporain qui se trouve au cœur de ce projet : le Palimpseste de San Lorenzo, qui à la fois témoigne d’une démarche rétrospective et saisit quelque chose d’éminemment nouveau : les compositions jusqu’alors inconnues de compositeurs florentins et d’ailleurs actifs au début du XVe siècle.

Les plus beaux manuscrits florentins de musique du Trecento s’inscrivent parfaitement dans ce 26

La couverture de ce CD montre le début de la dernière section du Codex Squarcialupi, préparée pour y accueillir les chansons du compositeur florentin Giovanni Mazzuoli (ca 1350/1361-1426) ; elle a cependant été laissée vide, excepté une unique image qui montre Giovanni à l’œuvre dans sa profession d’organiste (voyez l’image à l’intérieur du digipack). Sa musique était complètement inconnue jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit découverte dans le Palimpseste de San Lorenzo.

Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) de l’Université de Hambourg.

Le CSMC rassemble des spécialistes des manuscrits dans différents domaines, ainsi que différents projets scientifiques permettant l’application de méthodes de pointe pour l’analyse de manuscrits afin de réaliser une recherche comparative. L’un des projets du CSMC est dédié au « sauvetage » de l’écriture de manuscrits devenus illisibles en raison de différents types de dommages. Dans notre cas, la musique du Palimpseste de San Lorenzo a été effacée intentionnellement pour que le parchemin puisse être recyclé.

Sauver la musique du Palimpseste de San Lorenzo Parmi les récentes découvertes de manuscrits de musique médiévale, celle du palimpseste découvert dans l’église San Lorenzo à Florence au début des années 1980 est probablement la plus inattendue et intrigante.

Le manuscrit 2211 de l’église San Lorenzo porte aujourd’hui le titre de Campione de’ Beni del 1504 et détaille l’acquisition et la location de propriétés gérées par l’église jusqu’à l’année 1504 et même au-delà (voyez la couverture du manuscrit en p. 6). L’intérêt du Palimpseste de San Lorenzo réside dans le fait que les 111 feuillets de parchemin qui subsistent révèlent les traces de sa fonction originale : dans la deuxième décennie du XVe siècle, le volume fut constitué comme vaste collection de musique polyphonique médiévale. Vers la fin de ce siècle, les feuillets furent détachés, débarrassés de la musique et du texte, puis réassemblés et reliés pour servir de registre administratif (voyez en p. 10 leur aspect actuel). Le contenu musical était illisible, et dès lors considéré comme perdu, jusqu’à ce qu’en 2013 une opération d’imagerie de pointe soit rendue possible par le Centre for the

En juin 2013, des chercheurs et des scientifiques du CSMC ont apporté une caméra multispectrale haute résolution aux archives du chapitre de l’église San Lorenzo à Florence pour mettre l’entièreté du manuscrit en images. La caméra multispectrale permet de photographier chaque feuillet d’un manuscrit sous différentes couleurs de lumière (dont les spectres visible et invisible). Les images sont ensuite traitées grâce à un logiciel sophistiqué créé à l’origine pour analyser l’imagerie satellite et qui utilise des procédures statistiques pour créer une nouvelle image combinant les différences des multiples images afin de montrer ainsi les différentes couches d’écriture, sous-jacente (musique) et sus-jacente (texte ultérieur), comme on peut le voir en p. 11, 31 et 40. Les images résultantes ne montrent pas les couleurs originales du manuscrit ; on les appelle « images en pseudo-couleurs », qui servent à améliorer la lisibilité de la musique originale 27

tionaux. Le Palimpseste de San Lorenzo reconstitué nous renseigne sur la fin d’une ère musicale en Italie marquée par le style international d’influence française.

L’élan qui a présidé à l’assemblage d’une telle collection, en l’absence d’une tradition universitaire savante ou d’un milieu courtois, semble bien avoir été l’expression de la fierté florentine en matière de composition polyphonique italienne alliée au souci de préservation du répertoire le plus international en vogue dans les premières décennies du XVe siècle.

et à la séparer de l’écriture non musicale. L’imagerie multispectrale a ainsi produit des résultats que l’on ne pouvait envisager auparavant, nous permettant de retrouver la musique et le texte détruits. Dans leurs publications (2016), Andreas Janke et John Nádas ont réalisé une étude préliminaire, une analyse et une transcription des œuvres précédemment inconnues ainsi que des images en pseudo-couleurs de la source complète, produisant ainsi la reconstitution virtuelle d’un codex perdu permettant la lecture et l’étude de son contenu original.

Les pièces enregistrées ici sont représentatives de cette énorme collection de musique qui, même dans son état incomplet actuel, rassemble 216 pièces de compositeurs des générations précédentes, tels Giovanni da Cascia (fl. 1340-1350) et Jacopo da Bologna, ainsi que de la fin du XIVe et du début du XVe siècle, en particulier florentins. De nombreuses œuvres sont également présentes dans d’autres manuscrits du Trecento, mais sept parmi celles qui sont reprises ici n’existent que dans cette source (1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 10 et 12) et sont enregistrées pour la première fois. Les œuvres des Mazzuoli, employés à la cathédrale Santa Maria del Fiore à Florence, inconnues jusque-là, sont d’un intérêt tout particulier.

Contenu et exécution Le Palimpseste de San Lorenzo renferme plus de 200 chansons, parmi lesquelles des œuvres de compositeurs connus du Trecento, comme Jacopo da Bologna (fl. 1340-1360), Paolo da Firenze (1355-1436) et Antonio Zacara da Teramo (ca 1360-1416). Cet enregistrement se concentre notamment sur la musique, inconnue jusque-là, des Florentins Giovanni et Piero Mazzuoli (père et fils) : ce manuscrit offre l’opportunité inestimable d’un nouvel examen de la musique à Florence autour de 1400. La présence de chansons transalpines et d’une série de motets, peutêtre venus des conciles de Pise (1409) et possiblement de Constance (1414-1418) et des cours francophiles de Pavie et de Padoue, est également remarquable. Ce vaste répertoire de chansons anonymes ainsi que du compositeur-poète français Guillaume de Machaut (ca 1300-1377) et de ses contemporains se trouve également dans des collections du Nord de l’Italie, d’Autriche, d’Allemagne et d’autres centres interna-

Giovanni Mazzuoli était organiste de profession et très admiré de ses contemporains. Il fut engagé par différentes institutions florentines, dont la confraternité laïque d’Orsanmichele, où il est documenté pour la première fois en 1376, et la cathédrale de Florence à partir de 1401. Sa musique profane, que l’on peut 28

entendre ici, n’était certainement pas jouée durant le service à la cathédrale, mais plutôt lors d’occasions privées. Il reste possible que certaines de ses mises en musique étaient combinées à de nouveaux textes pour être exécutées par des confraternités laïques, comme celle d’Orsanmichele, en l’honneur de la Vierge Marie.

Piero Mazzuoli (1386-1430) était organiste, notaire et juge. Comme son père, il se produisit en tant qu’organiste en différents lieux, comme l’église San Lorenzo, la confraternité d’Orsanmichele et, finalement, y succédant à Giovanni, la cathédrale. Le style de ses œuvres diffère de celui de son père ; une intéressante mise en perspective est offerte par la comparaison des trois pièces de chacun d’entre eux reprises dans cet enregistrement.

peut-être d’une œuvre de commande, dans ce cas-ci dédiée à une personne spécifique : Lisa est nommée dans la note marginale de l’autographe de Sacchetti, mais est également citée à la première ligne du poème.

Le Palimpseste de San Lorenzo est l’œuvre d’un seul scribe. À la différence du luxueux Squarcialupi Codex, il semble être une collection privée. Nous ne connaissons pas le nom du compilateur et premier propriétaire de l’œuvre, mais nous pouvons affirmer avec une certaine assurance que quelqu’un comme Piero Mazzuoli, intéressé à la fois par la tradition musicale florentine et par les répertoires « importés », pourrait en avoir été le scribe.

De nombreuses étapes ont été franchies jusqu’à ce que la musique présentée ici puisse être jouée : il a fallu la rendre visible, l’identifier, l’éditer. Certains éléments cependant, en particulier les conventions d’exécution, ne peuvent être déterminés sur la base des sources manuscrites, qui ne fournissent pas d’informations concernant les instruments et leur utilisation, ou le nombre et la nature des voix et/ou des instruments.

Nos conceptions en matière de pratiques d’exécution proviennent en réalité largement des descriptions littéraires – comme celles du Liber Saporecti – et des représentations visuelles, en particulier celles des fresques et des manuscrits enluminés de l’époque.

L’une des pièces les plus intéressantes est Splendor da ciel de Giovanni Mazzuoli, sur un texte du célèbre poète florentin Franco Sacchetti, connu pour avoir collaboré avec différents compositeurs. Une note accompagne l’autographe de ce poème de Sacchetti conservé à la Bibliothèque laurentienne à Florence : « Ballatella di Franco fatta per uno giovine che amava Lisa » (« Ballatella [poème] de Franco pour un jeune homme qui aimait Lisa »). Nous voilà probablement face à une situation typique dans laquelle un poète écrit d’abord un texte, peut-être sur demande, qui est ensuite mis en musique par un compositeur. Dans de nombreux cas similaires, le poète est inconnu, comme dans le cas des textes mis en musique par Piero Mazzuoli ; certains compositeurs ont peut-être écrit texte et musique. Dans le cas de Splendor da ciel, il s’agit

(6, 10, 12, 14 et 15) sont exécutées de façon purement vocale, comme c’était probablement l’usage en Italie.

La plupart des interprétations, cependant, combinent voix et instruments de manière inspirée. La musique des pièces contenues dans le Palimpseste de San Lorenzo est souvent complète, ce qui n’est pas forcément le cas de leur texte poétique. Ainsi, les lacunes dans le schéma formel de l’œuvre ont été comblées par la musique des différentes sections jouées par les instruments (par exemple 1 et 7). Ailleurs, des parties de la musique sont utilisées comme préludes et interludes. Enfin, une exécution purement instrumentale a été choisie pour des œuvres transmises sans texte dans le Palimpseste de San Lorenzo, sauf pour l’incipit (2, 11), mais aussi pour des œuvres dont le texte a survécu mais considérées par les interprètes comme particulièrement adaptées pour être jouées de façon purement instrumentale.

C’est probablement à travers la perspective sur la musique des siècles ultérieurs que nous avons tendance à considerer le ténor comme un accompagnement du cantus, et il est remarquable que le ténor soit transmis dans certains manuscrits entièrement sans texte. Dans Poc’ hanno di mirar, La Morra inverse intentionnellement les pôles en faisant du ténor la seule partie munie d’un texte, en la doublant à l’octave et en la traitant même comme une chanson monophonique non mensurale – sons qui auraient été familiers aux Florentins.

Pour Amor mi stringe assai de Paolo da Firenze, une partie de contre-ténor était prévue, mais non insérée, dans un manuscrit concordant : Michał Gondko a créé une partie de contre-ténor pour cet enregistrement. Les parties de contre-ténor sont remarquables pour la manière dont elles rehaussent les sonorités et enrichissent la texture polyphonique (par exemple dans le rondeau Soiez liez, pour lequel nous avons pour la première fois une notation pour cette partie dans le Palimpseste de San Lorenzo – voyez en p. 15). Cependant, la partie de contre-ténor était souvent optionnelle ; les parties considérées comme essentielles pour une pièce polyphonique étaient le cantus et le ténor (de nombreuses pièces françaises 30
