LUTHER And THE MUSIC OF THE REFORMATION _ Song is prayer redoubled Martin Luther The man whom music historians would come to consider as the most important composer that Germany was to give to the Protestant rite was born in Eisenach on 21 March, the first day of spring, 1685. Louis XIV signed the Edict of Fontainebleau a few months later on 18 October; this abolished the Edict of Nantes that Henri IV had promulgated in 1598 and curtailed the freedoms that the Huguenots had earlier been granted. This, although a coincidence, is highly significant in that the resulting exodus of French Protestants to Germany was to play a considerable role in Johann Sebastian Bach’s musical development.

Our choice of such an observation as the starting point for this essay is not, however, coincidental. After having steadfastly proclaimed his convictions before the Diet of Worms in April 1521, Martin Luther knew that he would be prosecuted and that anyone who might agree to protect him would also be condemned. The safe-conduct that Emperor Charles V had granted him so that he might come to Worms was only valid for a short time and was in any case invalidated by the publication of the Edict that transformed the Diet’s deliberations into law. Frederick the Wise, the Elector of Saxony, then gave Luther sanctuary in his castle in Wartburg under cover of Luther’s supposed kidnapping; the castle happens to stand on a hill that directly overlooks the town of Eisenach! Luther made good use of his time there by writing several important works and by beginning his German translation of the New Testament.

Thuringia and a large part of central and northern Germany had become for the most part Protestant by the time that Johann Sebastian Bach was born a little more than one hundred and fifty years later. The horrors of the Thirty Years’ War were, however, still very much in people’s minds.

A primary cause of the war had been religious tension and, although the Treaty of Westphalia had effectively ended it, the war had involved almost every country in Europe and its chief battleground had been central Germany itself. The memory of its horrors was not to be erased in a few short years: even though religious faith was clearly one of the main remedies for the suffering the war had caused, the music that accompanied it presents us with a tender and moving image of this faith even today. Luther may not have realised the strength of that music at that time, but he did well to make sure that song would play a leading part in the organisation of the various religious services and in Protestant spiritual life in general.

Luther and the Reformation Born in Eisleben in Thuringia in 1483, Martin Luther could have easily enjoyed a peaceful life, one divided between monastic life (he had entered an Augustinian monastery in 1505) and a university career. This, however, was not to be. A period spent in Rome in 1510 perhaps provided the foundation for all his doubts about the Catholic church and its conception of faith and its behaviour, given that the church presented itself in the world as if it were a political and economical power. The Reformation had its origins in the university of Wittenberg, founded by Frederick the Wise, Elector of Saxony, at the beginning of the 16th century and where Luther was a professor.

Luther was not alone there, for he had been joined by various colleagues who would also come to play important roles in the spreading of the Reformation; these included Philipp Melanchthon and Georg Burckardt, alias Spalatin, an advisor to Frederick the Wise.

Luther attacked the Church on several points: he first discussed the very basics of the Christian faith, stating that the Church should return to the Bible, its fundamental source, and cleanse it of all the interpretations that had accrued to it over the centuries. It was, however, Luther’s struggle against the power of the Church that provoked the greatest enmity of the ecclesiastical authorities. This began with Luther’s virulent attack on the system of indulgences, for one of the most questionable instances of this system was the indulgence promulgated by Pope Julian II in 1506 and renewed

by Pope Leo X in 1515: it was granted to all those who contributed financially to the rebuilding 11

of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Luther, having witnessed these practices and many other similar procedures in Germany, reacted violently; the publication of his Ninety-Five Theses (Disputatio pro declaratione virtutis indulgentiarum) in 1517 marked the first of a long series of polemical writings.

He did not have to wait long for a reaction from Rome, for he was threatened with excommunication in 1520. He soon realised that his ideas would be linked with certain political ideas then current and addressed his following tract ‘To the Christian nobility of the German nation concerning the improvement of the Christian state’; he was then excommunicated. Luther remained obdurate at the Diet of Worms that was convened by Charles V in 1521; true to his convictions, he married in 1525 and continued his work without respite until his death in 1546.

When the Diet of Augsburg was convened in 1555, one part of Luther’s struggles had been won: the Peace of Augsburg ratified the religious and political separation of Germany from the Empire. In a nutshell, the Rhineland and Bavaria remained Catholic, whilst the remainder of Germany became Protestant. This division was nevertheless not as arbitrary as it sounded; one of the more astonishing situations thus created occurred in the city of Dresden, where the ruling court remained Catholic but the city’s churches became Lutheran.

Luther’s ideas and doctrines continued to spread throughout Europe during this time, although Luther was not solely responsible for the various ideological and religious movements that arose. Zwingli in Zürich, Calvin in France and Geneva, Bucer in Strasbourg, to name only the most important, all developed their own ideas for the reformation of the Christian faith. Like Luther, they fought energetically to defend their position, creating impassioned debate, blind hostility and unfair condemnation both around them and within their own circles. The history of the Reformation links the basic tenets behind such ideas with many reactions that were often created and directed by national and political imperatives.

The Lutheran liturgy Our principal concerns here are the impact of these spiritual movements on musical creation and the role that this music played in Lutheran worship.

The Lutheran liturgy is based on the books of the Old and the New Testament, bearing in mind that certain of these — the Apocryphal books such as Wisdom of Sirach, Tobit and Wisdom of Solomon — are generally regarded as non-canonical by Protestants. Amongst the texts of the Old Testament, the Book of Psalms occupies an extremely important place; it was also provided with an extensive commentary by Luther himself. We should also remember that the Protestant liturgy rejects all worship of the Saints as individuals. The cult of Mary is also excluded from the Protestant rite; the Virgin is nonetheless recognised as the mother of Jesus, although not as an intercessor for mankind before God. A direct consequence of this for musicians was that many moving texts that had been set with so much tenderness and emotion by Catholic composers were now excluded. One example of this is provided by J.S. Bach’s discovery of Pergolesi’s Stabat mater towards the end of his life; not wanting to be deprived of this music, Bach replaced the original text with the words of Psalm 51, Tilge Höchster meine Sünden (Miserere mei Deus). Franz Tunder had done the same one century earlier, replacing the text of Giovanni Rovetta’s motet Salve Regina for solo voice with the words Salve mi Jesu. The Protestant liturgical year nevertheless observed several feast days relating to the Virgin: the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, marked by Bach’s cantata Ich habe genug BWV 82, the Angelic Visitation and the Annunciation, and of course Christmas itself with its frequent mentions of the Virgin Mary.

Even though German became the principal language of the liturgy, Latin was not about to disappear. Luther did not intend it to fade away, for he considered it to be the language of learning and of knowledge. He drew up a lengthy Latin catechism for priests and those with learning as well as a shorter German catechism for the common people. Luther envisaged a widespread use of Latin in the cities, even for readings that could be given in Latin and/or in German. The same was true for the parts of the Ordinary of the Mass that were incorporated into the Lutheran rite such as the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei. The only sacraments that were incorporated into the Lutheran rite were those of baptism, confession and the communion in two kinds. Extreme Unction disappeared, leaving only an Office for the Dead; this, however, did not include the texts that characterised the Catholic Requiem Mass.

When J.S. Bach published the third part of the Clavierübung, he presented the fundamental tenets of Lutheranism between the monumental Prelude and the grandiose Fugue: Law, Faith and Prayer allied with the three sacraments of Baptism, Confession and Communion.

The central part of the Lutheran rite is the sermon, which at that time was framed by two pieces of music that were generically known as a cantata. This positioning of the cantata in the liturgical rite provides an explanation why certain cantatas are divided into two clear parts.

Luther and music Although Luther’s role in musical matters is significant, it is also highly interesting, if not essential, to take stock of German musical life at that time, returning to the final years of the 15th century. What exactly do we know about German music of that time? The centre of musical life then was of course the court of Maximilian I, situated between Vienna and Innsbruck. Maximilian’s musical establishment consisted of some of the most important composers of the time when he died in 1519; these included Heinrich Isaac, famed for his Flemish technical skill and his knowledge of Italian music, Ludwig Senfl from Zürich and the organist Paul Hofhaimer. The Flemish polyphonic style predominated, as can be seen in the motet Imperii proceres, composed by Isaac to celebrate the glory of the Emperor. Another highly specific genre, the Tenor Lied, was in use in secular music: this was a piece for three or four voices in which the principal melody was given not to the soprano but to the tenor line; the remaining lines were often performed instrumentally. Beyond the walls of Maximilian’s court, there was an entire series of manuscripts in which compositions of many different origins were assembled. Most of them were German and unfortunately anonymous, although alongside these are several pieces by the most famous Franco-Flemish composers of the 15th century. One of the most important of these collections is the Glogauer Liederbuch, so called because of its origin in the town of the same name. The majority of these pieces are secular, whether vocal works or instrumental compositions; this was somewhat unusual at that time and seems to reflect a certain individuality in German music. Nonetheless, there are also several sacred works in Latin and, surprisingly enough, also in German — a real anticipation of Luther’s ideas about the use of the vernacular in sacred music in the final years of the 15th century.

It should, however, be realised that these few manuscripts are all concentrated within an area that was limited to the cultural capitals of the Empire and to southern Germany. What is more, the printing of music that was already flourishing in Venice and in France in the first years of the 16th century had not yet arrived in Germany. It is more than likely that the sole examples of polyphonic music that could have reached Luther had been published in Italy; it is also highly probable that they were sacred works by Josquin Desprez, the supreme master of the Ars perfecta, for he was the composer who had incontestably benefited the most from these early Italian editions and Luther valued his works highly. Music printing finally reached Germany during the 1510s and was initially employed for the publishing of song-books.

Luther’s first task in musical matters was, with the collaboration of his musician advisors and friends, to create a basic repertoire of chorales that would soon be the foundation of all music intended for use in Lutheran services. One result of this was Johann Walter’s publication of the first edition of the Geistlich Gesangbüchlein in Wittenberg in 1524. Other volumes of chorales would follow as the century progressed: Georg Rhaw’s Newe deudsche Geistliche Gesenge… (1544) contains one hundred and twenty-three chorales organised according to the liturgical year. The number of composers listed there shows how important their work was in the development of the reformed church: alongside many little-known names we also find Martin Agricola, Arnold von Burck, Lupus Hellinck, Ludwig Senfl, Thomas Stoltzer, Lucas Osiander and several others.

The basic principles of the chorale melody were that it should be syllabic, that it should use a simple and regular metre with minims and crotchets, and that it should be capable of being memorised easily by the congregation; the faithful were invited to sing the chorales during services and at other times as well, such as during family prayers. The greater part of these chorale melodies seems to be original work, although some of them were certainly borrowed from many different types of repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant to popular secular songs. The melody of the Easter chorale Christ lag in Todesbanden was inspired by the plainsong melody Victimae pascali laudes whilst the melody of the famous Italian popular song Madre non mi far monaca translated into French as La Jeune Fillette or Une Jeune Pucelle and whose French texts would evoke the virginity of Mary, was 15

adapted into a chorale melody and applied to the text Helf mir Gottes Güte preisen. Bach was to use this chorale to conclude his Cantata BWV 73 for the third Sunday after Epiphany with the line Das ist des Vaters Wille. The chorale melodies are primarily in binary rhythm, although this does not exclude the use of ternary rhythm for chorales associated with the great festivals of Christmas and the Resurrection such as the famous In dulci jubilo, nonetheless still with its Latin text.

Martin Luther was also a musician, as were many ecclesiastics at that time; it is said that he was able to hold a part in polyphonic music and certain iconographical sources even depict him playing a lute. Various chorales are considered to have been composed by him, the most important of these being the chorale Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A mighty fortress is our God) with its statement of the foundations of his belief.

Although the chorales were monodic in origin, they were soon given polyphonic treatment; the need to respect their rhythmic simplicity resulted in a homophonic style of composition that would be employed even by Johann Sebastian Bach himself. Volumes of monodic chorales were published that were rapidly followed by further collections of polyphonic settings. The composers of the Reformation were also required to master the perfection of imitative polyphony; the first great examples of their works in the field of sacred music began to appear during the second half of the 16th century.

The place of the Protestant chorale The chorale was the central element of music composed for the Lutheran rite. We could say that the repertoire of the entire liturgical year had already been established and that many simple polyphonic and harmonic versions of this repertoire existed that were specifically intended for services. There was therefore no need to have even more versions of it provided. One of the most important volumes of chorale harmonisations in four parts and dating from the 17th century was the Becker Psalter that was harmonised by Heinrich Schütz and published in 1628.This is clearly one of the rare instances of how the Protestant chorale was used in Schütz’s work; it would soon be developed into a key element in the Geistliche Konzerte and in various oratorios.

On the other hand, the use of the chorale as the theme or cantus firmus became extremely important as the polyphonic tradition continued, becoming an integral part of the thematic material on which composers could draw. In this respect, Michaël Praetorius is clearly one of the most interesting composers of the time. His volume Polyhymnia Caduceatrix & Panegyrica (1619) imbued the Protestant chorale with a remarkably festive character. Praetorius associated the chorale melodies as used in polyphonic and polychoral writing (itself Venetian) with the most lavish and splendid techniques of Italian music. Each composition is presented in a new manner and unites vocal soloists, choirs and instrumental ensembles. The specific usage of the chorale melodies in vocal music as well as in works for the organ will be described in the commentary for the work concerned.

The composers The recordings that are included in this anthology are of works by the many composers who were active from the generation of Martin Luther to the generation of Heinrich Schütz. Luther’s principal musical collaborator was Johann Walter (1496-1570), born in Kahla in Thuringia and who entered the service of the court of Frederick the Wise as a cantor. After Frederick’s death he joined Luther in Wittenberg before gaining permanent employment in Torgau, where he remained until his death. His personal involvement was crucial to the development of the chorale repertoire; he was supported in this by Luther, who wrote a preface to Walter’s first collection of chorales (1524). Johann Walter was also a composer of extremely complex polyphonic music who did not hesitate to attempt pieces in six or even seven parts, whether in Latin (several versions of the Magnificat) or in German.

The things that strike us the most about the composers of Central Germany at the beginning of the 17th century are their immense variety of style, the diversity of their modes of composition and, more than anything else, the role played by Italian influence. Contrary to everything that we might otherwise believe, the Lutheran repertoire was far from austere. It is always correct in respect to the written texts and stays close to them; the exaltation of Easter and the simple naivety of the 17

Christmas pieces are contrasted with the profound sorrow of the desolate texts in which the soul of the sinner calls upon his Saviour in supplication We can approach this repertoire as a whole in several different ways, depending on whether we wish to discuss formal construction or, more simply, what the composer wished to convey. This incredible creative explosion developed principally in two regions: central Germany (Thuringia and Saxony) and northern Germany, dominated as it was by the great Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Lübeck. We will continue this chapter with a discussion of the development of the various genres and forms.

First, however, some background information on the composers themselves before we come to discuss their music directly. Central Germany was not simply the area where the Lutheran reforms were initiated; it was also the starting point for a remarkable musical journey. Music had an important place in the churches there and the post of Cantor was almost as much coveted as was a court musician’s. The end of the 16th century saw the birth of many musical personalities in that region: Michaël Praetorius (ca. 1571-1621), equally famous as a composer as a theoretician; Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654), an organist and pupil of Sweelinck; Johann Hermann Schein (15861630), one of Bach’s predecessors at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig; Johann Rudolf Ahle; Andreas Hammerschmidt. The most important composer of that time, however, was Heinrich Schütz, who travelled to Venice to study with Giovanni Gabrieli and then returned to the City of the Doges once more in 1628; during that time he assuredly met Monteverdi and would certainly have heard his music. Although his great talent gained him entry to the Dresden Kapelle, Schütz also travelled as far as the Scandinavian lands and to the Netherlands: Rembrandt painted his portrait during one such stay.

We know that Schütz, Scheidt and Praetorius met at the inauguration of a new organ in Bayreuth in 1619. We can easily imagine the enthusiastic conversations that bound the three together, each musician telling of his travels and discoveries. They did, however, already know each other, at least from the year before: they had been asked to obtain works in the concertante style for the cathedral in Magdeburg. Schütz’s pupils also included two composers who were to make their careers in the northern cities: Matthias Weckman and Christoph Bernhardt.

This boxed set contains not only polyphonic works but also several pieces for organ, given that the instrument was indispensable to the enactment of the Lutheran liturgy. The instrument was firmly established in churches, even smaller village churches, from the end of the 16th century onwards. Instruments then increased in size, progressing from two to three and even four keyboards without counting the pedalboard. The pedalboard itself was much larger in Germany than in the other countries of Europe: it possessed a range of at least two octaves, had a variety of stops and was employed with increasing skill and virtuosity; this reached its apogee with the renowned stylus fantasticus of Buxtehude and Reinken in Northern Germany towards the end of the 17th century.

Apart from these pieces that were often inspired by works from the early Italian baroque, the great majority of works for organ were based on chorale melodies. The principal function of the organist, after all, was to accompany the chorales sung by the congregation of the faithful.

CD I A liturgical year Heinrich Scheidemann: Praeambulum in d Heinrich Scheidemann (ca. 1595-1663) was employed at the Katharinakirche in Hamburg.

He seems to have acquired his knowledge of the Italian repertoire from his teacher, the organist Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, in Amsterdam. With its alternating passages on different keyboards, this piece — here played organo pleno — cannot help but recall the Venetian polychoral canzone.

Advent Michael Altenburg: Nun komm der Heiden Heiland Michael Altenburg (1584-1640) was active as theologian, priest, teacher and performing musician in Erfurt. His works remain faithful to the polyphonic tradition, as can be seen in this Advent motet. Written for six voices, it uses two very distinct musical styles: the first section 19

develops the chorale melody in imitative style, whilst the second part supplies a more vertical style of harmonisation for several couplets. In the version we have chosen to perform here, the organist replaces one of the couplets with an ornamented version of the chorale. It is most likely that these verses could also have been sung by the congregation; this can be heard in the final verse of the chorale, in which all the voices sing the chorale melody in unison, accompanied by the organ im vollen Werk.

Christmas Andreas Hammerschmidt: Freude, Freude, große Freude Hammerschmidt (c. 1611-1675) was a pupil of Schütz and was principally active in Zittau; this motet is one of the finest expressions of the joy of Christmas. The text uses the angelic salutation to the shepherds. In the second part of the motet we hear a dialogue between the lower voices and the higher voices: a highly theatrical scene between the shepherds and shepherdesses who admire the infant Jesus in ternary rhythm and then try to sleep. This work makes incontrovertible use of Italian madrigal techniques for expressive ends; this is also made clear by the title of the volume in which this piece is to be found: Musikalische Andachten, Chormusik auf Madrigalmanier (1652). The text of the motet seems to have been written by Hammerschmidt himself.

Paul Siefert: Puer natus in Bethlehem Paul Siefert (1586-1666) seems to have spent his entire career as composer and organist in Danzig. Like many of his contemporaries, he travelled to Amsterdam to study with Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. Here he sets the chorale Puer natus in Bethlehem as a cycle of five variations, taking advantage of the form to make use of different registrations. Many chorales assigned to the feast of Christmas are in triple time; Puer natus in Bethlehem is no exception.

Michael Praetorius: Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen This chorale is rarely used and, except for the fine version composed by Johannes Brahms at the 20

end of his life, is not to be found amongst the vast number of works composed for organ. The verse given to the organ here is once again an improvisation. This chorale with its nostalgic character is closely associated with the feast of Christmas; it appears in many versions in various languages in modern times, some of which have no connection at all with the original text; one such version is the French adaptation Dans une étable obscure.

New Year Samuel Scheidt: Das alte Jahr vergangen ist The celebration of the New Year is closely linked to the feast of Christmas in the Lutheran rite, as can be clearly seen in the succession of cantatas that make up J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.

The chorale Das alte Jahr vergangen ist is one of the principal chorales for the celebration of the New Year. Here it is set as a motet for double choir; its nostalgic character is perfectly suited to the ambiguity of the feast of Christmas with its dual celebration of rebirth and the inexorable passing of time.

Johann Hermann Schein: O Jesulein, mein Jesulein There is only tenderness in this small concert spirituel, in which two sopranos — either angels or shepherdesses — gaze at the infant Christ and ask him what he has brought them from the throne of Heaven: “Was bringst du mir von Himmels Thron?” Such an image notwithstanding, this work is firmly linked to the celebration of the New Year: its subtitle marks it as a Neujahrslied, whilst the text states clearly that the gift that the infant Christ brings to the world is a New Year’s gift. This composition comes from the Opella Nova, a volume that Schein, a predecessor of Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig, had published in 1618. This work marks an important moment in the use of the new musical styles inspired by Italian models, with its use of two voices accompanied by the continuo.

Canticum Simeonis Michael Praetorius: Herre, nun lässt du deinen Diener in Frieden fahren With this motet for seven voices we return to the final tableau of the Christmas story, the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. The text uses the words of the aged Simon: “Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, for my eyes have beheld the Saviour”. The doxology that follows is set in triple time; this, at the end of the motet, is an evocation of the three persons of the Trinity.

Passion Delphin Strungk: Lass mich dein sein und bleiben All that we know about Delphin Strungk (ca. 1601-1649) is that he had been an organist in Wolfenbüttel, Celle and finally Braunschweig. This organ chorale is a chorale prelude; the chorale melody is played on a separate keyboard in the soprano register above a polyphonic accompaniment.

The chorale melody is a simple cantus firmus, although with some added ornamentation. This Passiontide chorale melody is most frequently heard as a setting of the text O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden.

Caspar Othmayr: O Mensch bewein dein Sünde groß This is an example of one of the first polyphonic chorale settings in four parts composed towards the middle of the 16th century. Othmayr had been won over gradually to the Lutheran cause and composed both sacred and secular works in several genres. This composition is based on the chorale melody, which he develops mainly through imitation. We should also note an effect that he had certainly borrowed from Josquin Desprez, the alternation of passages between the two upper voices and the two lower voices at certain moments.

Resurrection Samuel Scheidt: Christ lag in Todesbanden This motet for double choir once again presents Scheidt’s totally individual manner of 22

composition. Each choir declaims each verse of the chorale throughout the work separately, only to unite as if in confirmation at the end of the work. Scheidt reserves the use of systematic responses between the two choirs until the end of the motet and the words “Gott loben und dankbar sein, und singen Alleluia”.

Samuel Scheidt: Christ ist erstanden This version of the chorale is to be found in a volume of 100 geistlicher Lieder und Psalmen published in 1650. As is indicated in the volume’s preface, these pieces can be performed “in Christian churches and communities with organ accompaniment, as well as at home where they can also be played and sung — Für die herzen Organisten mit der Christlichen Kirchen und Gemeinde auf der Orgel desgleichen auch zu Hause zu spielen und zu zingen.”

Ascension Samuel Scheidt: Ascendo ad patrem meum This motet of Scheidt’s for a double choir of eight voices provides an example of his setting of a Latin text. We should not ignore the obvious effects: the rising motion of the introductory melody and the development of this idea of ascension by using swift short notes. The use of triple time at the end of the motet accentuates the expression of joy contained in the words et gaudebit cor vestrum, alleluia.

Pentecost Thomas Selle: Veni Sancte Spiritus Initially a pupil of Johann Hermann Schein in Leipzig, Thomas Selle (1599-1663) spent his career in Hamburg. His splendid Veni sancte spiritus is set for three choirs of differing vocal ranges: Choir I with two sopranos, alto and tenor, Choir II with the traditional soprano, alto, tenor and bass, Choir III with a lower grouping of alto, two tenors and bass. This combination of voices results in an extremely large vocal range, going from the low D below the bass stave to the high A above the treble stave. Apart from a few impressive moments when all three choirs sing simultaneously, the 23

greater part of the Latin motet is made up of a succession of sequences given to each separate choir.

The same text is taken up by the three choirs at various moments; the swift exchanges between the choirs are particularly effective as a madrigalism on the words in labore. It is easy to imagine a physical realisation of this, as we have done here by placing Choir I to the left, Choir II to the right and Choir III in the centre.

Holy Trinity Bartholomäeus Gesius (c. 1555-1613): Der du bist in Einigkeit Once again we have a composer who deserves to be much better known. Active mainly in Frankfurt an der Oder, his pupils included Michael Praetorius and other great musicians. Gesius published several large volumes in which he attempted to assemble a great variety of liturgical works, from harmonised Lutheran chorales to more learned compositions. It is therefore clearly not by chance that this short motet on the Trinity is written for three high voices that intertwine. The German text is Martin Luther’s own translation of the Latin hymn O lux beata trinitas.

Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott Our God is a solid fortress / a fine defence and armour.

He sets us free from every ill / that has yet assailed us.

We did not choose this chorale to be the title of this recording by chance. Martin Luther not only created the original German text, using Psalm 46 as his basis, but also composed the chorale melody. The militaristic character of the text provides an immediate explanation of why Lutherans everywhere saw this as a rallying cry for their faith, first during Luther’s time and then later during the Thirty Years’ War. It was therefore logical that this chorale was used as the underlying theme for cantatas that were composed for and performed during services that celebrated the anniversaries of the Reformation: one such work was J.S. Bach’s eponymous cantata (BWV 80) performed on 31 October 1724 in Leipzig. Felix Mendelssohn composed a new symphony in 1830 for the tricentenary of the Augsburg Confession: the fourth and final movement of this Fifth or ‘Reformation’ Symphony was a series of variations on the chorale Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott.

Melchior Franck: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott An unaccompanied setting of the chorale, such as could have been sung by the faithful during Luther’s lifetime, is followed by a polyphonic setting for five voices by Melchior Franck (c. 1580-1639); Franck received his musical training in Augsburg and in Nuremberg, where he studied with Hans Leo Hassler. Melchior Franck spent his entire career in the service of Prince Johann Casimir of Coburg.

The city was severely damaged during the Thirty Years’ War; Prince Johann Casimir died in 1633, after which his successor was obliged to make drastic reductions in the staff of his Kapelle. Franck, however, remained in service there until his death in 1639. Franck’s instruction that the organ accompaniment should be played organo pleno clearly reinforces the chorale-like character of his setting.

Michael Praetorius: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (Fantasie) This fundamental organ registration — which depicts the ‘feste Burg’ so well — also opens the fantasia on this chorale by Michael Praetorius; his theoretical works, the dances from Terpsichore and various sacred vocal works are well known. He did, however, train as an organist, although this is often forgotten; he was clearly a superb player, as we can hear from his more extended works such as the chorale fantasias, a new genre that appeared at the beginning of the 17th century. the period were improvisers above all else, so we may well suppose that Praetorius’ more extended organ works began as such, to the point that he was required to include then into the various services as a musical commentary on the liturgical theme of the day. In these fantasias he was required to develop the chorale theme and to vary and ornament it in such a way as to illustrate the texts of the various verses of the chorale.

CD II The foundations of the Lutheran liturgy Deutsches Magnificat Heinrich Schütz: Meine Seele erhebt den Herren Of the various texts that were taken from the old Roman liturgy, the Magnificat retained an extremely important position in the Lutheran rite. It was sung not only at Vespers but also in the Christmas liturgy. The text has its origins in the Gospel according to St. Luke and is supposed to be the words spoken by the Virgin Mary to her cousin Elisabeth after the Annunciation. It has been set countless times and in varying forms. In many cases, settings of the Magnificat were published systematically in every key, doubtless to ensure some variety. This was already the case with Johann Walter’s Magnificat octo tonorum that he published in 1557. One particular aspect of the Magnificat was that it was divided into eight verses of two lines each; this clearly had a direct effect on the composition of the work. The Magnificat had also its own particular performance practice: this dated back to the Renaissance, when polyphonic verses were alternated with verses in Gregorian chant; Lassus composed more than one hundred such settings. This practice continued with the Lutherans, although with one important variation: the alternation was no longer between polyphony and Gregorian chant, but between the organ and the vocal setting, be it Gregorian or polyphonic; the improvisation or composition of such verses became an important part of an organist’s work as a result. This practice is represented here by the first verse of a Magnificat Primi Toni by Michael Praetorius.

Heinrich Schütz composed four settings of the Magnificat. As can be seen in settings by him and by his contemporaries, these had begun to be translated into German; one such work is the Deutsches Magnificat in eight parts that appears in his op. 13, a volume that was clearly intended as a musical legacy and entitled Zwölf Geistliche Gesänge. Here the work is in one unbroken section, without any division into verses. The two choirs are treated antiphonically in the Venetian style.

Except for the introduction (7 bars) and the beginning of the doxology (14 bars), the entire composition is set in triple time; this gives a clearly jubilatory character to the entire piece.

Deutsche Messe Christoph Bernhard: Missa super Christ unser Herr The composition of polyphonic settings of the Mass was a fundamental and essential part of the activities of a composer of sacred music. Although it was not an essential part of every service, the Ordinary of the Mass remained present. Even if the Credo was omitted, the remaining parts — the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei — were still sung and the use of the Latin texts remained common in this genre. The Kyrie and the Gloria were the principal movements that were used; many settings of this Deutsche Messe were then made from the beginning of the 17th century up until the time of J.S. Bach. In most these cases composers continued the tradition of the Renaissance and based them initially on a chosen theme; for the Lutherans, this was of course a chorale. One such work was the Mass composed by Christoph Bernhardt, first a pupil of Paul Siefert and then of Heinrich Schütz; like Schütz, he too spent two periods in Italy and also met Giacomo Carissimi in Rome. He was principally active, however, in Hamburg where he succeeded Thomas Selle.

Bernhardt’s Mass is based on the chorale Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam. These two sections of the German Mass are also to be found in the Dritter Theil der Clavierübung of Johann Sebastian Bach. This important collection of organ works is in fact a demonstration of the foundations of the Lutheran faith, with the two parts of the German Mass therefore being present; the three sections of the Kyrie are associated with the Trinity: Kyrie, Gott Vater in Ewigkeit / Christe, aller Welt Trost / Kyrie, Gott heiliger Geist. The Gloria is based upon the chorale Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr. 27

The sacraments In the Clavier Übung III, Johann Sebastian Bach brought together three chorales that are linked to the sacraments of the Lutheran faith: Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam for baptism, Aus tiefer Not for confession and Jesus Christus unser Heiland for communion. We will now meet them in compositions by his predecessors.

Hieronymus Praetorius: Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam (Fantaisie) Hieronymus Praetorius (1560-1629), the son of the organist Jacob Praetorius, was born in Hamburg and spent the greater part of his career there. He is unrelated to Michael Praetorius. His Fantasia on the chorale Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam already displays all the characteristics of the highly individual style that would reach its peak towards the end of the century with Reinken and Buxtehude.

Heinrich Schütz: Aus tiefer Not We have chosen the penitential chorale Aus tiefer Not as it forms a part of the important collection of Lutheran chorales published by Heinrich Schütz in 1628. This contains the 150 Psalms in a German translation by the theologian Cornelius Becker; Schütz then provided them with settings for four voices based on chorale melodies. Aus tiefer Not, like several other chorales, was given two different settings.

Johann Steffens: Jesus Christus unser Heiland Martin Luther himself wrote the text for the communion chorale Jesus Christus unser Heiland.

We should remember that both bread and wine are distributed in the Lutheran communion, as can be seen in the engraving by Lucas Cranach the Elder in which Martin Luther and Johann Hus give communion to Johann and Frederick III, Electors of Saxony (see p. 25). This chorale fantasia, less elaborate than the fantasia by Hieronymus Praetorius above, was composed by Johann Steffens (c.

1560-1616), organist in Luneburg and associated with the North German organ school.

The Lutheran Passions Joachim a Burck: Johannes-Passion Alongside the invention of the chorale and the composition of motets in the Ars perfecta style, the Lutheran composers very quickly came up with the idea of setting various excerpts of the Gospels to music, making use of the narrations of Christ’s Passion in particular. Johann Walter had already composed two Passions, one according to St. Matthew and the other according to St. John; these were monodic compositions, using the modal technique used for the singing of Gregorian chant. Polyphony was employed only in the sections for the crowds, the turbae, and respected the same melodic principles: the polyphony was constructed quite simply according to the faux-bourdon technique. Joachim Von Burck’s setting of the Passion was published as Die deutsche Passion nach Johannes in Wittenberg in 1568 and is the oldest Lutheran setting of the Passion that is completely polyphonic. All the characters of the Gospel narration benefit from the polyphonic writing, including the Evangelist himself, Christ, Judas, Caiaphas and Peter.

Die deutsche Passion nach Johannes is divided into three parts: the Arrest, the Judgement of Pilate and the Crucifixion. It is introduced by a polyphonic setting of the title, to the words “Hear the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, as narrated in the Gospel according to John” and concludes with the words “Sweet Lord, we believe, strengthen our faith. Amen”. To draw clearer distinctions between the various protagonists, the recording of this work made by Vox Luminis for this anthology divides the various sections between two groups of singers, the first representing the Evangelist and the second the colloquentes, with the two groups joining forces for the opening and closing choruses as well as for the turbae. Many composers continued this tradition, including Leonard Lechner and Johannes Herold at the end of the Renaissance as well as Christoph Demantius and Antonio Scandello (1517-1580). Scandello was born in Bergamo and had been engaged as an instrumentalist at the Dresden court in 1547; he converted to Lutheranism in 1562.

Samuel Scheidt: Da Jesus an dem Kreuze stund This Passiontide chorale, like the Easter chorale that appears on CD I, is taken from the 29

Dogma This is the third section that Johann Sebastian Bach explores in his Clavier Übung III. The three foundation stones of the Lutheran religion — law, faith and prayer — are represented by the chorales Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot, Wir glauben all an einen Gott and Vater unser der du bist im Himmelreich.

Johann Hermann Schein: Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot (v. 1) Martin Luther: Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot (v. 12) We return momentarily to Schein’s Opella Nova for a version of Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot for two voices and continuo; Schein, however, only sets the first verse. The complete German text of the chorale is to be found in the Geistlich Gesangbüchlein published by Walter in 1524 and edited by Luther himself; it is here that we find the exposition of the ten commandments. Schein’s composition is followed by the two final verses of the chorale in a simple a cappella version, as it was undoubtedly heard in many churches or places of devotion at that time.

Johann Walter:Wir glauben all an einen Gott Johann Walter’s motet Wir glauben all an einen Gott for six voices was written in a style that much resembled that of Josquin Desprez, with a cantus firmus derived from the chorale melody in the second voice. The version recorded here only consists of the first verse. The same music is used for the two remaining verses, Wir glauben auch an Jesum Christ and Wir glauben all an den Heiligen Geist.

Bathasar Resinarius: Vater unser der du bist im Himmel For the Vater unser, we have chosen a somewhat archaic polyphonic version by Balthasar Resinarius (c. 1486-c. 1555); Resinarius had served as cantor in the Imperial Chapel of Maximilian 30

Deutsches Requiem Thomas Selle: Die mit Tränen saën Andreas Hammerschmidt: Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen Heinrich Schütz: Selig sind die Toten

We know that Johannes Brahms took his texts for his Deutsches Requiem (op. 45) “nach Worten der Heiligen Schrift”; his musical models were works by the splendid polyphonic composers of the early 17th century. It is, therefore, extremely tempting to wonder if Brahms had been able to study early settings of these texts. After much searching for polyphonic vocal settings without instrumental accompaniment, we have found three motets by composers whose works are already represented here: Heinrich Schütz, Andreas Hammerschmidt and Thomas Selle. These three works possess a rare beauty and bring us in reverent mood to the conclusion of this musical homage to Martin Luther.

In memoriam Martin Luther Samuel Scheidt: Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ Another chorale from the Görlitzer Tablaturbuch. This, the final work of the recording, needs no further introduction than its supplicatory first verse: Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, ich bitt, erhör mein Klagen; verleih mir Gnad zur dieser Frist, laß mich doch nicht verzagen (I call upon you, Lord Jesus Christ, I pray that you wil hear my complaint; grant me grace at this time, do not leave me in despair).

Caspar Othmayr: Mein himmlischer Vater Caspar Othmayr (1515-1553) was not really a member of the inner sanctum of those close to Luther. We know that he met Johann Walter in Torgau and that he aligned himself with the 31

Reformation from 1545 onwards. He could not in all fairness be omitted from this anthology, as his name appears as the harmoniser of many chorales and he was also the composer of a musical homage to Luther himself. The motet for five voices Mein himmlischer Vater bears the annotation Verba Lutheri ultima, or Luther’s last words; the first tenor sings the words that Luther is supposed to have spoken on his deathbed as a cantus firmus: “In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum. Redemisti me, Deus veritatis”.

Chanter, c’est prier deux fois Martin Luther

Le 21 mars, au premier jour du printemps de l’année 1685, naît à Eisenach celui que l’histoire de la musique va considérer comme le plus important compositeur que l’Allemagne ait donné à la liturgie protestante. Quelques mois plus tard, le 18 octobre, Louis XIV signe l’Édit de Fontainebleau, qui met un terme aux libertés accordées aux huguenots en abolissant l’Édit de Nantes, promulgué par Henri IV en 1598. Coïncidence certes, mais celle-ci est importante, car l’exode des protestants français vers l’Allemagne va jouer un rôle considérable dans l’évolution musicale de Johann Sebastian Bach.

Le fait de choisir cette constatation comme point de départ de cet ouvrage n’est pas fortuit.

En avril 1521, après avoir soutenu avec fermeté toute sa conviction devant la diète de Worms, Martin Luther sait qu’il sera poursuivi et que quiconque acceptera de le protéger sera condamné.

Le sauf-conduit qui lui a été accordé par l’empereur Charles Quint pour pouvoir se déplacer à Worms n’est que de courte durée et sera invalidé dès la publication de l’Édit qui doit concrétiser les délibérations de la diète. C’est Frédéric le Sage, duc-électeur de Saxe, qui a eu l’idée, sous le couvert d’un enlèvement feint, de lui proposer le refuge dans son château de la Wartbourg ; nous revoici à Eisenach, au sommet de cette colline qui domine la ville. C’est là que Luther met à profit ce temps pour écrire de nombreux ouvrages fondamentaux et s’attaque à la traduction allemande du Nouveau Testament.

Lorsque Johann Sebastian Bach y naît, un peu plus d’un siècle et demi plus tard, la Thuringe et une grande partie de l’Allemagne centrale et de l’Allemagne nordique sont devenues majoritairement protestantes. Certes, les horreurs de la guerre de Trente Ans sont encore dans 33

les mémoires. En 1648, le Traité de Westphalie a effectivement mis fin à cette période de guerre provoquée principalement par les tensions religieuses, une guerre qui a concerné pratiquement tous les pays d’Europe et dont le principal terrain de bataille a justement été cette Allemagne centrale.

Le souvenir de ces horreurs ne s’est pas éteint en quelques années, et si la foi est sans doute l’un des principaux remèdes pour soulager les douleurs, la musique qui l’accompagne nous en présente encore aujourd’hui une image sensible et émouvante. Et ici, Luther, peut-être sans deviner quelle sera la force de la musique dans cette période, a vu juste en assurant au chant une place primordiale dans l’organisation des offices et de la vie spirituelle.

La réforme luthérienne Né vers 1483 à Eisleben en Thuringe, Martin Luther aurait pu bénéficier d’une vie paisible, partagée entre une vie monastique (il entre dans une congrégation d’Augustins en 1505) et une carrière universitaire. Il n’en est rien. Un séjour à Rome en 1510 est peut-être à l’origine de tous ses doutes par rapport à l’Église catholique, à sa conception de la foi et à son comportement, car elle s’impose au monde comme un pouvoir politique, voire financier. C’est de l’Université de Wittenberg, fondée par le roi de Saxe Frédéric le Sage au début du XVIe siècle, où il est professeur, que part tout le mouvement réformateur. Luther n’y est pas seul : il a été rejoint par certains de ses collègues qui, par la suite, joueront aussi un rôle important dans la diffusion de la Réforme ; parmi ceux-ci, Philipp Melanchthon et Georg Burckhardt, dit Spalatin, conseiller de Frédéric le Sage.

Luther attaque l’Église à différents points de vue ; c’est d’abord une réflexion sur les bases mêmes de la foi chrétienne, sur le retour aux sources essentielles que sont les Écritures saintes, débarrassées de toutes les interprétations qui se sont installées au cours des siècles. Mais ce qui provoque sans doute la plus grande hostilité de la part des autorités de l’Église, c’est la lutte que Luther entame contre son pouvoir ; le point de départ en est son attaque virulente contre le système des indulgences. Parmi les exemples les plus contestables de ces attributions d’indulgences se trouve celle qu’a promulguée Jules II en 1506 et que Léon X renouvelle en 1515 ; elle est accordée à ceux qui aideront à la reconstruction de la basilique Saint-Pierre de Rome. Luther, témoin de ces pratiques et 34

de bien d’autres dérives similaires constatées en Allemagne, réagit violemment, et la publication, en 1517, des 95 Thèses (Disputatio pro declaratione virtutis indulgentiarum) est le début de ses nombreux écrits polémiques. Les réactions de Rome ne se font pas attendre et en 1520, Luther est menacé d’excommunication. Ayant constaté que ses idées rencontrent aussi certaines visions politiques, il adresse un nouvel écrit À la noblesse chrétienne de la nation allemande sur l’amendement de l’état chrétien. Il est excommunié. À la diète de Worms réunie à la demande de Charles Quint en 1521, Luther reste sur ses positions. Selon ses convictions, il se marie en 1525 et continue son action sans répit jusqu’à sa mort en 1546.

Lorsque la diète d’Augsbourg se réunit en 1555, une partie du combat de Luther a abouti ; la Paix d’Augsbourg accepte cette séparation de l’Allemagne religieuse (et politique) de l’Empire.

Brièvement dit, seules la Rhénanie et la Bavière restent catholiques, tout le reste de l’Allemagne devenant protestant. Mais on sait que cette division n’est pas aussi arbitraire ; ainsi, parmi les situations les plus étonnantes se trouve celle de la ville de Dresde dont la cour est restée catholique alors que les églises de la ville sont luthériennes.

Entre-temps, les idées et la doctrine de Luther ont fait leur chemin en Europe. Mais Luther n’est pas le seul responsable de ces mouvements idéologiques et spirituels. Zwingli à Zurich, Calvin en France et à Genève, Bucer à Strasbourg, pour ne citer que les plus importants, ont développé leurs propres visions des réformes de l’expression de la foi chrétienne. Tout comme Luther, ces derniers ont combattu avec énergie pour la défense de leurs positions, entraînant autour d’eux et entre eux des débats passionnés, des hostilités parfois aveugles, des condamnations injustes. L’histoire de la Réforme associe les fondements de ces réflexions et de nombreuses réactions souvent guidées par les impératifs nationaux et politiques.

La liturgie luthérienne Ce qui nous importe, dans le cadre de cette publication, c’est évidemment l’impact de ces mouvements spirituels sur la création musicale et la place de la musique dans le culte.

La liturgie luthérienne est basée sur les écrits de l’Ancien et du Nouveau Testament. Certes, 35

certains textes sont généralement exclus par les protestants, principalement ceux que l’on considère comme apocryphes (les Livres de l’Ecclésiastique, de Tobie, de La Sagesse…). Parmi les textes de l’Ancien Testament, le Livre des Psaumes, qui a d’ailleurs été abondamment commenté par Luther, est d’une importance capitale. Il faut également souligner que la liturgie protestante rejette tout culte lié à la personnalité des saints. En ce qui concerne le culte marial, il est également exclu de la liturgie, ce qui n’empêche évidemment pas la reconnaissance de la personne de la Vierge Marie comme mère de Jésus, mais pas comme éventuel intercesseur auprès de Dieu. Dans le domaine musical, cela aura pour conséquence directe d’exclure tous ces textes qui ont été illustrés avec tant de tendresse et d’émotion par les compositeurs catholiques. Un bel exemple de ce rejet est celui de la découverte que Johann Sebastian Bach fait, à la fin de sa vie, du Stabat Mater de Pergolesi ; ne pouvant se priver de cette musique, il remplace le texte par celui du psaume 51, Tilge, Höchster meine Sünden (autrement dit le Miserere). Un siècle plus tôt, Franz Tunder a fait de même en plaçant le texte Salve mi Jesu sur la musique du motet Salve Regina a voce sola de Giovanni Rovetta. Ceci dit, l’année liturgique conserve certaines fêtes liées à la Vierge Marie : la Purification (présentation au temple, célébrée entre autres par la cantate Ich habe genug BWV 82 de Johann Sebastian Bach), la Visitation et l’Annonciation, sans compter évidemment Noël, où le nom de la Vierge Marie apparaît fréquemment.

Si l’allemand devient la langue principale de la liturgie, le latin ne disparaît pas pour autant.

Luther n’a d’ailleurs pas souhaité sa disparition, le considérant encore comme la langue du savoir.

C’est la raison pour laquelle il a rédigé un grand catéchisme en latin pour les ecclésiastiques et les personnes instruites, et un petit catéchisme en allemand pour le peuple. Dans les grandes villes, Luther préconise un usage encore important du latin (même pour les lectures qui peuvent se faire en latin et/ou en allemand). Il en est de même pour les parties de l’ordinaire qui restent dans la liturgie luthérienne (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus et Agnus Dei).

Les compositeurs vont donc encore composer pour certaines occasions des musiques sur les textes de l’ordinaire, soit en allemand, soit en latin.

Dans le domaine des sacrements, seuls restent dans la liturgie ceux du baptême, de la confession et de la communion (sous les deux espèces). Si l’extrême-onction disparaît, l’office des morts reste 36

bien présent, mais organisé comme un office ordinaire et ne comportant pas les textes typiques de la messe de Requiem catholique.

Lorsque Bach publie la troisième partie de sa Clavier Übung, ce sont bien les fondements de la religion luthérienne qui y sont illustrés entre le monumental Prélude et la grandiose Fugue : la loi, la foi et la prière d’une part et les trois sacrements d’autre part (le baptême, la confession, la communion).

La partie centrale de l’office luthérien est la prédication qui est encadrée par les deux « musiques », à savoir ce que l’on va appeler sous le terme générique de « cantate ». C’est cette place de la cantate dans l’organisation de l’office qui explique que certaines d’entre elles sont divisées en deux parties.

Luther et la musique Si le rôle de Luther dans le domaine musical est important, il est sans doute aussi intéressant, voire capital de faire un bref état de la vie musicale allemande à cette époque, en remontant dans les dernières années du XVe siècle. Que savons-nous exactement de la musique allemande de cette période ? Bien sûr, le centre qui domine la vie musicale est la cour de Maximilien Ier, entre Vienne et Innsbruck. À son décès en 1519, sa chapelle musicale a rassemblé les compositeurs les plus importants de l’époque avec, entre autres, Heinrich Isaac, porteur de son savoir-faire flamand et de sa connaissance de la musique italienne, Ludwig Senfl, originaire de Zurich, ou l’organiste Paul Hofhaimer. Le style polyphonique flamand y règne en maître, ainsi qu’en témoigne le motet Imperii proceres, écrit par Isaac à la gloire de l’Empereur. Dans le domaine profane, un genre très spécifique y est pratiqué : le tenorlied, pièce à trois ou quatre voix dans lesquelles la mélodie principale (les autres voix étant souvent instrumentales) se trouve non pas au « soprano », mais bien au « ténor ». En dehors de la cour de Maximilien, toute une série de manuscrits regroupent des compositions d’origines diverses, majoritairement allemandes et, hélas !, anonymes, auxquelles se joignent quelques pièces des plus célèbres compositeurs franco-flamands du XVe siècle ; parmi ces recueils, le Glogauer Liederbuch (qui doit son nom à la ville dont le manuscrit est originaire).

L’immense majorité des pièces sont profanes, qu’il s’agisse de pièces vocales ou de compositions instrumentales, ce qui est assez rare à cette époque et serait le reflet d’une particularité de la musique allemande ; néanmoins, on y trouve quelques pièces religieuses latines et, fait surprenant, des pièces en allemand. Nous sommes à la fin du XVe siècle ! Voilà qui anticipe les idées de Luther sur l’usage de la langue vernaculaire dans le répertoire religieux.

Mais il faut bien reconnaître que ces quelques témoignages manuscrits restent concentrés sur une région bien limitée aux centres culturels de l’Empire et aux régions d’Allemagne du Sud. De plus, l’imprimerie musicale qui fleurit à Venise puis en France n’a pas encore pris sa place dans l’Allemagne du début du XVIe siècle. Il est plus que probable que les seuls exemples de musique polyphonique qui ont pu arriver dans les mains de Luther sont quelques publications italiennes et, sans doute, d’œuvres religieuses du musicien qui a sans conteste bénéficié de la majorité des premières éditions vénitiennes, le maître absolu de l’Ars perfecta : Josquin Desprez, que Luther porte en grande estime. Mais, au début des années 1510, l’imprimerie musicale fait ses débuts en Allemagne ; elle sera d’abord consacrée à l’édition de chansonniers.

Dans le domaine de la musique, le premier souci de Luther est de constituer, avec l’aide de ses conseillers et amis musiciens, ce répertoire de base que sont les chorals, futur fondement de la musique destinée aux offices. C’est ainsi que Johann Walter publie en 1524 à Wittenberg une première édition du Geistlich Gesangbüchlein. Les recueils de chorals vont se suivre au cours du siècle. Ainsi, en 1544, les Newe deudsche Geistliche Gesenge… de Rhaw comportent 123 chorals ordonnés selon l’année liturgique. Le nombre de compositeurs cités atteste de l’importance de leur activité dans le cadre du développement de l’Église réformée : à côté de noms très peu connus se retrouvent Martin Agricola, Arnold von Bruck, Lupus Hellinck, Ludwig Senfl, Thomas Stolzer, Lucas Osiander…

Le principe de la mélodie de choral est d’être syllabique, de se développer dans une métrique simple et régulière (en blanches, en noires) et d’être facilement mémorisable afin de pouvoir être assimilée et apprise par les fidèles, puisque ces derniers sont invités à chanter les chorals à l’office ou en d’autres circonstances, par exemple celles de la dévotion dans le cadre familial.

En ce qui concerne la composition de ces mélodies de choral, si la grande majorité semble être originale, certaines ne sont que des emprunts à des mélodies existantes, puisées dans toutes sortes de répertoires, qu’il s’agisse de mélodies grégoriennes ou de chansons profanes. C’est le cas, par exemple, du choral de Pâques Christ lag in Todesbanden, inspiré par Victimae pascali laudes. De même, la célèbre chanson populaire italienne Madre non mi far monaca, qui sera traduite en français sous le titre La Jeune Fillette ou Une Jeune Pucelle et dont les textes français sont des évocations de la virginité de Marie, sera reprise parmi les mélodies de choral pour chanter le texte Helf mir Gottes Güte preisen. Bach utilisera ce choral en conclusion de la cantate BWV 73 (pour le troisième dimanche après l’Épiphanie) avec le verset Das ist des Vaters Wille. Les rythmes sont majoritairement binaires, ce qui n’exclut pas les rythmes ternaires utilisés pour des chorals liés à des célébrations particulièrement festives, comme celles de Noël ou de la Résurrection ; c’est le cas du choral In dulci jubilo, qui reste lié à l’usage d’un texte latin.

Martin Luther, comme beaucoup d’ecclésiastiques, est lui-même musicien. On dit même qu’il est capable de chanter de la musique polyphonique et certaines sources iconographiques le représentent jouant du luth. On lui attribue également la composition de certains chorals, et tout particulièrement celui qui symbolise sans doute le mieux les fondements de sa pensée : Eine feste Burg ist unser Gott (Notre Dieu est une forteresse).

Si l’origine du choral est monodique, très rapidement, il va revêtir les atouts de la polyphonie, mais avant tout dans le respect de la simplicité rythmique, imposant l’écriture homophone, une technique qui sera encore celle de Johann Sebastian Bach. Aux publications de recueils de chorals monodiques vont donc succéder celles des recueils polyphoniques. Enfin, la perfection de la polyphonie imitative va aussi s’imposer dans le métier des compositeurs de la Réforme et l’on verra apparaître peu à peu, dans la deuxième moitié du XVIe siècle, les premiers grands témoignages de leur maîtrise de cet art, dans le domaine de la musique sacrée.

La place du choral protestant Le choral est bel et bien l’élément emblématique de la musique luthérienne. Il faut dire que 39

le répertoire de toute l’année liturgique est bien établi et qu’existent de nombreuses versions polyphoniques simples et homophones destinées au culte. Il n’y a donc aucune raison de multiplier ces versions. L’un des plus importants recueils de chorals harmonisés à quatre voix datant du XVIIe siècle est le Becker Psalter, qu’Heinrich Schütz publie en 1628. C’est sans doute l’une des rares présences du choral protestant dans l’œuvre de l’illustre compositeur, qui s’impose bien plus dans le répertoire des Geistlische Konzerte (concerts spirituels) ou des oratorios.

Par contre, dans le prolongement de la tradition polyphonique, l’usage du choral comme mélodie de base, ou comme cantus firmus, devient très important. Il fait maintenant partie intégrante du matériau thématique dans lequel puisent les compositeurs. À cet égard, Michael Praetorius représente sans doute l’un des compositeurs les plus passionnants. Son recueil Polyhymnia Caduceatrix & Panegyrica, publié en 1619, donne au choral protestant une dimension remarquablement festive. Praetorius associe les mélodies de choral à l’écriture polyphonique et polychorale (très vénitienne) aux principes les plus somptueux de la musique italienne. Chaque composition se présente d’une façon originale, associant les chanteurs solistes, les chœurs et les ensembles d’instruments. Dans la partie consacrée aux commentaires des œuvres, nous aurons l’occasion de mettre en évidence l’usage des mélodies de choral tant dans la musique vocale que dans la musique d’orgue.

Les compositeurs Les enregistrements qui figurent dans cette anthologie réunissent des œuvres de nombreux compositeurs qui vont de la génération de Martin Luther à celle de Heinrich Schütz. Le principal collaborateur de Luther est Johann Walter (1496-1570). Né à Kahla en Thuringe, il est chantre au service de la cour de Frédéric le Sage. Après le décès de ce dernier, Walter rejoint Luther à Wittenberg avant d’obtenir un poste fixe à Torgau, où il réside jusqu’à sa mort. Son investissement dans la confection du répertoire des chorals est fondamental et d’ailleurs cautionné par Luther, qui écrit la préface du premier recueil publié en 1524. Mais Johann Walter est aussi le compositeur d’une musique polyphonique de texture très complexe, n’hésitant pas à aborder les structures à 40

six ou sept voix, qu’il s’agisse de pièces en latin (comme plusieurs versions du Magnificat) ou en allemand.

En ce qui concerne les compositeurs d’Allemagne centrale du début du XVIIe siècle, ce qui frappe, c’est la variété des styles, la diversité des modes d’écriture et surtout le rôle de l’influence italienne. Contrairement à tout ce que l’on pourrait croire, le répertoire musical luthérien n’a rien d’austère. Il est toujours juste par rapport aux textes, proche de ceux-ci. La jubilation pascale ou la fraîche naïveté des pièces de Noël peuvent contraster avec la douleur profonde des textes de désolation, où l’âme du pêcheur s’adresse de façon suppliante à son sauveur. Aborder l’ensemble de ce répertoire peut se faire sous divers angles, qu’il s’agisse des conceptions formelles ou, tout simplement, de l’évocation des compositeurs. Cette incroyable fécondité créatrice se développe principalement dans deux régions : l’Allemagne centrale (Thuringe, Saxe) et l’Allemagne du Nord, dominée par les grandes villes hanséatiques, Hambourg et Lübeck. C’est par le biais de l’évocation des genres et des formes que sera développé ce chapitre.

Mais avant d’évoquer la musique elle-même, il convient sans doute de donner quelques informations sur les compositeurs. Si la réforme luthérienne trouve son origine en Allemagne centrale, c’est bien là aussi le point de départ de cette remarquable épopée musicale. La place de la musique dans les églises est importante et le poste de cantor devient presque plus convoité que celui de musicien de cour. La fin du XVIe siècle voit naître dans cette région de nombreuses personnalités : Michael Praetorius (c. 1571-1621), célèbre pour ses talents de compositeur autant que de théoricien, Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654), organiste et disciple de Sweelinck, Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630), l’un des prédécesseurs de Johann Sebastian Bach à la Thomaskirche de Leipzig, Johann Rudolf Ahle ou Andreas Hammerschmidt… Mais le plus important compositeur de cette génération est Heinrich Schütz, qui a fait le voyage de Venise pour étudier auprès de Giovanni Gabrieli et a revisité la cité des Doges en 1628, séjour au cours duquel il a sans doute rencontré Monteverdi et certainement entendu sa musique. Si ses fonctions principales le mettent au service de la chapelle de Dresde, Schütz a également beaucoup voyagé jusque dans les pays scandinaves et même aux Pays-Bas : durant un séjour à Amsterdam, Rembrandt fait son portrait.

On sait que Schütz, Scheidt et Praetorius se rencontrent en 1619 à l’occasion de l’inauguration d’un orgue à Bayreuth. On imagine facilement les conversations passionnées qui doivent lier les trois musiciens, racontant leurs voyages et leurs découvertes. Mais ils se connaissent déjà, au moins depuis l’année précédente ; ils ont été chargés de procurer à la cathédrale de Magdebourg des œuvres dans le « style concertant ». Parmi les disciples de Schütz se trouvent certains compositeurs qui, par la suite, feront carrière dans les villes du Nord : Matthias Weckmann et Christoph Bernhard. À côté des compositions polyphoniques, ce coffret réunit également quelques pièces d’orgue, un instrument indispensable à l’organisation de l’office luthérien. Dès la fin du XVIe siècle, l’orgue prend une place considérable dans les églises, même dans celles des villages. Les instruments s’amplifient, avec l’usage de deux, trois et même quatre claviers, sans compter avec le pédalier qui, en Allemagne, contrairement à ce qui se passe dans les autres pays européens, est particulièrement développé ; son étendue est d’au moins deux octaves, il possède des registres variés et est traité avec une virtuosité de plus en plus grande qui trouvera son apogée à la fin du XVIIe siècle en Allemagne du Nord, avec le fameux « stylus fantasticus » de Buxtehude ou de Reincken. À côté des pièces libres, souvent inspirées des modèles du premier baroque italien, une grande majorité des compositions est basée sur les thèmes de chorals. C’est d’ailleurs la première fonction de l’organiste que d’accompagner les chorals chantés par la foule des fidèles.

C’est sans doute auprès de l’organiste Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, à Amsterdam, qu’il a pu parfaire sa connaissance de la musique italienne. Avec ses jeux de réponses sur les différents claviers, cette pièce, jouée ici « organo pleno », ne manque pas de faire penser aux canzone polychorales vénitiennes.

Avent Michael Altenburg : Nun komm der Heiden Heiland C’est à Erfurt que Michael Altenburg (1584-1640) exerce ses fonctions de théologien, pasteur, pédagogue et musicien. Son œuvre reste fidèle à la tradition polyphonique, ce dont témoigne ce motet de l’avent. Conçu à six voix, il utilise deux modes d’écriture bien distincts : la première partie développe la mélodie du choral en style imitatif et la seconde partie en propose, pour plusieurs couplets, une harmonisation en style vertical. Dans l’interprétation présentée ici, l’organiste réalise une version ornementée du choral en remplacement d’un des couplets. Il est probable que ces versets peuvent aussi être chantés par les fidèles, ce que l’on peut entendre dans le dernier verset du choral où toutes les voix, à l’unisson, sont accompagnées par l’orgue « im vollen Werk ».

Noël Andreas Hammerschmidt : Freude, Freude, große Freude Ce motet de ce disciple de Schütz, actif principalement à Zittau, est l’une des plus belles expressions de la joie de la Nativité. Le texte reprend les paroles de l’ange aux bergers. Dans la seconde partie, on assiste à un dialogue entre les voix graves et les voix aiguës : une véritable scène de théâtre entre les bergers et les bergères qui, sur un rythme de balancement ternaire, admirent l’enfant Jésus (Jesulein, évidemment) et tentent de l’endormir… Voici une pièce qui, de façon indiscutable, utilise les effets madrigalesques italiens à des fins expressives. Cette constatation est d’ailleurs confirmée par le titre du recueil dont provient cette pièce : Musikalische Andachten, Chormusik auf Madrigalmanier (1652). Le texte pourrait être de Hammerschmidt lui-même.

Paul Siefert : Puer natus in Bethlehem C’est à Danzig que Paul Siefert (1586-1666) fait toute sa carrière de compositeur, mais aussi d’organiste. Comme bon nombre de ses contemporains, il fait le voyage pour étudier auprès de Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck à Amsterdam. Il traite ici le choral Puer Natus in Bethlehem sous forme d’un cycle de cinq variations qui permettent d’utiliser des registrations variées. Comme plusieurs chorals de la période de Noël, Puer Natus in Bethlehem est en rythme ternaire.

Michael Praetorius : Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen Ce choral n’apparaît que très rarement et il est absent du très vaste répertoire des pièces d’orgue, si ce n’est dans la très belle version écrite par Johannes Brahms à la fin de sa vie. Le verset confié ici à l’orgue est donc, à nouveau, une improvisation de l’organiste. Ce choral au caractère nostalgique est associé de façon très intime à la célébration de Noël, bénéficiant encore de nos jours de nombreuses versions dans des langues étrangères, dont certaines s’écartent totalement du texte original. C’est le cas de la version française, Dans une étable obscure.

Nouvel An Samuel Scheidt : Das alte Jahr vergangen ist Dans la liturgie luthérienne, la célébration du Nouvel An est intimement liée à la fête de Noël.

On peut encore le constater dans la succession des cantates qui constituent l’Oratorio de Noël de Johann Sebastian Bach. Le choral Das alte Jahr vergangen ist est l’un des principaux de la célébration de l’An neuf. En voici une version sous forme de motet à double chœur qui possède ce caractère nostalgique, élément indissociable de cette ambiguïté de la fête de Noël qui célèbre à la fois le renouveau et l’inexorable mouvement du temps qui passe.

Johann Hermann Schein : O Jesulein, mein Jesulein Rien que de la tendresse dans ce petit concert spirituel, où deux voix de soprano (deux anges, deux bergères ?) contemplent l’enfant, lui demandant « que m’apportes-tu du trône céleste ? » (« Was bringst du mir vons Himmels Thron? »). Qu’on ne s’y trompe pas : malgré le sujet, cette composition est bel et bien liée à la célébration du Nouvel An : elle porte le sous-titre de « Neujahrslied » et le texte évoque bien que ce cadeau que l’enfant apporte au monde est son présent pour l’An neuf. Cette composition provient du recueil Opella Nova que ce prédécesseur de Johann Sebastian Bach à Leipzig édite en 1618. Il s’agit d’une étape importante dans l’usage des nouvelles pratiques musicales inspirées des modèles italiens, avec ici l’emploi de deux voix soutenues par la basse continue.

Canticum Simeonis Michael Praetorius : Herr, nun lässt du deinen Diener in Frieden fahren Avec ce motet à sept voix, nous voici dans la dernière scène de la narration de la Nativité, celle de la présentation au temple. Le texte reprend les paroles de Siméon : « Seigneur, laisse aller en paix ton serviteur, car mes yeux ont vu le Sauveur ».C’est sur un rythme ternaire qu’est introduite la doxologie qui, à la fin du motet, évoque les trois personnes de la Trinité.

Passion Delphin Strungk : Lass mich dein sein und bleiben De Delphin Strunk (c. 1601-1649), on ne sait quasiment rien, sinon qu’il fut organiste dans différentes villes :Wolfenbüttel, Celle, et enfin Braunschweig. Ce choral d’orgue appartient au genre du prélude de choral ; sur le support d’un accompagnement polyphonique, la mélodie de choral se déploie sur un clavier indépendant dans le registre de soprano. Elle est soit jouée en simple cantus firmus, soit ornementée. Ce choral de la période de la Passion est plus connu avec le texte O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden.

Caspar Othmayr : O Mensch bewein dein Sünde groß Voici un exemple des premiers chorals polyphoniques à quatre voix écrits vers le milieu du XVIe siècle. Ce compositeur, rallié peu à peu à la doctrine luthérienne, est actif dans de nombreux domaines sacrés et profanes. Cette composition est basée sur la mélodie du choral qu’elle traite principalement de manière imitative. On remarquera un effet certainement emprunté au langage de Josquin Desprez, à savoir, à certains moments, l’alternance entre des passages confiés aux deux voix supérieures, puis aux deux voix inférieures.

de Samuel Scheidt. Tout au long de l’œuvre, chaque chœur énonce séparément chaque vers du choral ; ensuite, ils se réunissent pour une sorte de confirmation. Scheidt réserve les effets de réponse systématiques entre les deux chœurs pour la fin du motet, « Gott loben und dankbar sein, und singen Alelluia ».

Samuel Scheidt : Christ ist erstanden Cette version de ce choral provient d’un recueil de 100 geistlicher Lieder und Psalmen publié en 1650. Comme l’indique la préface de cette édition, ces pièces peuvent être exécutées « dans les églises chrétiennes et les communautés, à l’orgue ou aussi à la maison où elles peuvent être jouées et chantées » (« Für die herzen Organisten mit der Christlichen Kirchen und Gemeinde auff der Orgel desgleichen auch zu Hause zu spielen und zu zingen... ») Ascension Samuel Scheidt : Ascendo ad patrem meam Avec cet autre motet à huit voix en double de chœur de Scheidt, voici un exemple de composition en latin. On remarquera les effets madrigalesques évidents : le mouvement ascendant de la mélodie introductive et l’amplification de cette idée d’ascension par la mélodie en note rapides. À la fin du motet, l’utilisation du rythme ternaire accentue l’expression de la joie sur les mots « et gaudebit cor vestrum, alleluia ».

Pentecôte Thomas Selle : Veni Sancte Spiritus Disciple de Johann Hermann Schein à Leipzig, c’est à Hambourg que Thomas Selle fait carrière.

Le somptueux Veni sancte spiritus est écrit pour trois chœurs de tessitures différentes ; le premier fait appel à deux sopranos, alto et ténor, le second aux quatre voix traditionnelles (soprano, alto, ténor et basse) et le troisième à des voix plus graves (alto, deux ténors et basse). Il en résulte une tessiture très étendue tant vers le superaigu (la) que vers le grave le plus profond (ré). Mis à part quelques 46

impressionnants moments de superposition des trois chœurs, l’essentiel de ce motet en latin est fait de la succession de séquences confiées séparément à chaque chœur. À quelques endroits, c’est le même texte qui est repris aux trois chœurs ; l’effet de la rapidité des échanges entre les chœurs est particulièrement remarquable, comme effet madrigalesque, sur les mots « in labore ». On peut imaginer une véritable spatialisation pour ce motet, ce que nous avons réalisé ici en mettant le premier chœur à gauche, le deuxième à droite et le troisième au centre.

Trinité Bartholomäeus Gesius : Der du bist in Einigkeit Voici un compositeur dont l’œuvre mériterait une bien meilleure reconnaissance. Actif principalement à Francfort-sur-l’Oder, Gesius (c. 1555-1613) compte parmi ses disciples des musiciens aussi importants que Michael Praetorius. Il a édité plusieurs recueils, parfois très volumineux, dans lesquels il tente d’unir une grande variété de chants liturgiques des chorals luthériens harmonisés à ces pièces d’écriture plus savante. Ce n’est sans doute pas un hasard si ce petit motet sur la Trinité est écrit à trois voix aiguës et croisées. Le texte allemand est une traduction de Martin Luther de l’hymne O lux beata trinitas.

Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott Notre Dieu est une forteresse, une défense et une armure solides.

Il nous délivre de tous les tourments qui maintenant nous assaillent.

Le choix de ce choral pour titre de cette réalisation n’est pas fortuit. Inspiré du psaume 46, c’est Martin Luther qui en a réalisé la première traduction allemande et qui en a composé la mélodie. Le caractère quasi militaire de ce texte permet de comprendre immédiatement pourquoi ce choral, dès la génération de Luther et par la suite durant la guerre de Trente Ans, a été considéré comme un véritable chant de ralliement des luthériens. Il est donc logique que, durant les générations suivantes, ce choral a été la base de la composition de cantates exécutées lors des offices de célébration de l’anniversaire de la Réforme ; c’est le cas de la cantate éponyme de Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 80), chantée à Leipzig le 31 octobre 1724. En 1830, à l’occasion du tricentenaire de la Confession d’Augsbourg, Félix Mendelssohn écrit une nouvelle symphonie ; le quatrième et dernier mouvement de cette Cinquième Symphonie est composé d’une série de variations sur le choral Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott.

Melchior Franck : Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott Après une version a capella telle qu’elle aurait pu être chantée par une foule de fidèles au temps de Luther, voici une version polyphonique à cinq voix de Melchior Franck (c. 1580-1639), compositeur formé à Augsbourg et à Nuremberg (avec Hans Leo Hassler). Toute sa carrière se passe au service du prince Johann Casimir de Cobourg. Cette ville est particulièrement touchée par la guerre de Trente Ans, et au décès du prince Johann Casimir en 1633, son successeur doit diminuer de façon drastique les effectifs de la chapelle, où Franck reste malgré tout jusqu’à son décès en 1639. Ici, l’accompagnement avec « organo pleno » renforce évidemment le caractère du choral.

Michael Praetorius : Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (Fantasie) C’est à nouveau avec cette registration forte (qui illustre bien cette « forteresse ») que commence la fantaisie sur ce choral écrite par Michael Praetorius, compositeur dont on connaît bien les écrits théoriques, les danses de Terspichore et certaines compositions religieuses vocales, alors que son métier d’organiste est plus souvent oublié. Et cependant, comme bon nombre de ses contemporains, Michael Praetorius est aussi un brillant organiste, ce dont témoignent quelques compositions 48

particulièrement développées comme ses fantaisies sur des chorals, un genre nouveau qui apparaît au début du XVIIe siècle. Comme on sait que ces organistes sont avant tout des improvisateurs, on peut supposer qu’à l’origine, ces grandes pièces ne sont autres que des improvisations telles qu’ils doivent les inclure dans les offices comme commentaire musical sur les thèmes de la liturgie du jour.

Le principe de ces fantaisies est donc de développer le thème du choral, de le varier, de l’ornementer en cherchant aussi, par le moyen de tous ces artifices, à illustrer les textes des différents versets.

CD II Les fondements de la liturgie luthérienne Deutsches Magnificat Heinrich Schütz : Meine Seele erhebt den Herren Parmi les textes empruntés à l’ancien répertoire romain, le Magnificat conserve une place très importante dans la liturgie luthérienne. Il est chanté aux Vêpres, mais aussi à l’office de Noël. Ce texte connu aussi sous le titre de Cantique de Marie provient de l’évangile de Luc et correspond aux paroles de la Vierge Marie, après l’Annonciation, lors de sa visite chez sa cousine Élisabeth. On en dénombre de multiples mises en musique, sous diverses formes. Dans de très nombreux cas, les éditions de Magnificat, sans doute afin de varier les compositions, les présentent systématiquement dans tous les tons. C’est déjà le cas des Magnificat octo tonorum qu’édite Johann Walter en 1557.

L’une des grandes particularités du Magnificat est qu’il est divisé en huit versets de deux vers, ce qui a une incidence directe sur la composition. Une pratique tout à fait particulière est liée à l’exécution des Magnificat ; elle remonte à la Renaissance où le principe était d’alterner des versets polyphoniques avec des versets en plain-chant (Lassus en a composé ainsi plus d’une centaine !).

Cette pratique reste d’actualité chez les luthériens, mais elle connaît une variante importante : l’alternance ne se fait plus entre la polyphonie et le chant grégorien, mais bien entre l’orgue et le chant (ici soit polyphonique, soit grégorien). Pour les organistes, l’improvisation ou l’écriture de 49

ces versets occupe une grande part de leur activité. C’est ce qu’illustre ici le premier verset d’un Magnificat du premier ton de Michael Praetorius.

Heinrich Schütz a composé quatre versions du Magnificat. Chez lui comme chez ses contemporains, on voit apparaître des versions traduites en allemand ; c’est le cas du Deutsches Magnificat à 8 voix qui figure dans son opus 13, ouvrage sans doute testamentaire intitulé Zwölf Geistliche Gesänge. Ici, l’œuvre est d’un seul tenant, sans division par verset. Les deux chœurs sont traités en opposition dans le style vénitien. Mis à part l’introduction (7 mesures) et de début de la doxologie (14 mesures), toute la composition est en rythme ternaire, ce qui lui confère un caractère jubilatoire évident.

Deutsche Messe Christoph Bernhard : Missa super Christ unser Herr L’écriture de messes polyphoniques était en vérité un genre fondamental et essentiel de l’activité pour un compositeur de musique sacrée. Bien qu’il ne soit plus la partie essentielle de tous les offices, l’ordinaire de la messe reste présent. Si le Credo en est exclu, les autres parties, à savoir le Kyrie, le Gloria, le Sanctus et l’Agnus Dei, sont encore chantées et le latin reste d’actualité dans ce domaine.

Ce sont principalement le Kyrie et le Gloria qui sont utilisés. On dénombre ainsi, depuis le début du XVIIe siècle et jusqu’à la génération de Johann Sebastian Bach, plusieurs de ces Deutsche Messe.

Dans la plupart des cas, ces compositeurs prolongent la tradition de la Renaissance en les écrivant au départ d’un thème choisi, ici, chez les luthériens, un choral. C’est le cas de la messe de Christoph Bernhardt, disciple de Paul Siefert puis de Heinrich Schütz ; comme Schütz, il effectue deux séjours en Italie, rencontrant à Rome Giacomo Carissimi. C’est à Hambourg qu’il est actif, succédant à Thomas Selle. Sa messe est écrite sur la mélodie du choral Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam.

Notons également que le Gloria existe dans une version de choral sous le titre Allein Gott in der höh sei ehr. Ces deux parties de la messe allemande se retrouvent dans la Dritter Theil der Clavier Übung de Johann Sebastian Bach. Cet important recueil de pièces d’orgue est en fait construit comme une illustration des fondements de la foi luthérienne. Les deux parties de la messe allemande y sont donc 50

présentes. Les trois sections du Kyrie sont associées à une évocation de la Trinité : Kyrie, Gott Vater in Ewigkeit / Christe, aller Welt Trost / Kyrie, Gott heiliger Geist. Le Gloria est une pièce basée sur le choral Allein Gott in der höh sei ehr.

Les sacrements Dans cette Clavier Übung III, Johann Sebastian Bach réunit trois chorals liés aux sacrements de l’Église luthérienne : le baptême, la confession et la communion, respectivement Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam, Aus tiefer Not et Jesus Christus unser Heiland. Les revoici dans des compositions de ses prédécesseurs.

Hieronymus Praetorius : Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam (Fantaisie) Voici un autre musicien répondant au nom de Praetorius. Hieronymus Praetorius (15601629), fils de l’organiste Jacob Praetorius, est originaire de Hambourg où il passe l’essentiel de sa carrière. Il n’a aucun lien de parenté avec Michael. La Fantaisie sur le choral Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam possède déjà toutes les caractéristiques de ce style si particulier qui trouvera son apogée à la fin du siècle avec Reincken et Buxtehude.

Heinrich Schütz : Aus tiefer Not Le choral de pénitence Aus tiefer Not est illustré ici par ce que l’on peut trouver dans l’important recueil de chorals luthériens que Heinrich Schütz édite en 1628. On y trouve les 150 psaumes dans une traduction allemande du théologien Cornelius Becker. Sur la base des mélodies de choral, Schütz propose des versions harmonisées à quatre voix ; comme c’est le cas pour certains chorals, celui-ci bénéficie de deux harmonisations différentes.

Johann Steffens : Jesus Christus unser Heiland C’est à Martin Luther que l’on doit le texte du choral associé à la communion Jesus Christus unser Heiland. Rappelons que la communion est distribuée sous les deux espèces, ce que rappelle 51

d’ailleurs la gravure de Lucas Cranach l’ancien où l’on voit Martin Luther et Jean Hus donner la communion à Johann et Frédéric III, électeurs de Saxe (voir p. 25). C’est une fantaisie de choral moins développée que celle de Hieronymus Praetorius que nous propose ici Johann Steffens (c.

1560-1616), organiste associé également à la tradition du Nord et musicien à Lunebourg.

Les passions luthériennes Joachim a Burck : Johannes Passion À côté de l’invention du choral, de l’écriture de motets dans le style de l’Ars perfecta, les compositeurs luthériens ont imaginé très rapidement de mettre en musique les textes des récits évangéliques, et tout particulièrement ceux de la Passion. Johann Walter avait déjà écrit deux Passions d’après les évangiles de Matthieu et de Jean. Il s’agit de compositions monodiques, selon le principe des tons de récitation du chant grégorien. La polyphonie intervient seulement pour les turbae, en conservant les mêmes principes mélodiques, et est simplement faite selon le principe des faux-bourdons. C’est sous le titre Die deutsche Passion nach Johannes que la version de Joachim von Burck est imprimée à Wittenberg en 1568. C’est sans doute la plus ancienne passion luthérienne entièrement polyphonique. Tous les personnages de la narration évangélique bénéficient de la structure polyphonique : l’évangéliste, le Christ, Judas, Caïphe, Pierre…

L’œuvre est divisée en trois parties (L’Arrestation, Le Jugement chez Pilate, La Crucifixion).

Elle est introduite par la mise en polyphonie du titre : « Écoutez la Passion de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, telle qu’elle est narrée dans l’évangile de Jean » et se conclut par un autre texte : « Doux Seigneur, nous croyons, renforce notre foi. Amen ». Afin de mieux faire percevoir les divers protagonistes de l’action, l’enregistrement réalisé par Vox Luminis pour cette anthologie propose de répartir les sections entre deux groupes de chanteurs, le premier représentant l’évangéliste, le second les colloquentes, les deux groupes étant réunis pour les chœurs d’entrée et de conclusion, ainsi que pour les turbae. Par la suite, de nombreux compositeurs prolongeront cette tradition : Leonhard Lechner et Johannes Herold à la fin de la Renaissance, mais aussi Christoph Demantius et plus tard Antonio Scandello (1517-1580). Ce dernier, originaire de Bergame, est engagé 52

comme instrumentiste à la cour de Dresde en 1547 et se convertit à la religion réformée en 1562.

Samuel Scheidt : Da Jesus an dem Kreuze stund Comme le choral de la Résurrection qui figurait dans le premier disque, ce choral du temps de la Passion provient du Görlitzer Tablaturbuch de 1650. La douleur exprimée par ce choral est renforcée par les mouvements chromatiques des voix graves.

Le dogme C’est le troisième volet qu’illustre Johann Sebastian Bach dans la Clavier Übung III. Les trois fondements de la religion luthérienne, la loi, la foi et la prière, sont représentés par les chorals Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot, Wir glauben all an einen Gott et Vater unser der du bist im Himmelreich.

Johann Hermann Schein : Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot (v. 1) Martin Luther : Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot (v. 12) C’est au recueil Opella Nova de Samuel Schein que nous revenons un instant avec une version à deux voix et basse continue du premier choral. Schein ne met en musique que le premier verset. Dans le Geistlich Gesangbüchlein édité par Walter en 1524 se trouve le texte allemand de tous les couplets de ce choral, rédigé par Luther. On y trouve donc l’énoncé des dix commandements. À cette pièce de Schein succèdent ici le dernier verset présenté dans une simple version a capella telle qu’elle a dû résonner dans bien des églises ou lieux de dévotion.

Johann Walter :Wir glauben all an einen Gott Le motet Wir glauben all an einen Gott à 6 voix de Johann Walter est écrit dans un style très proche de celui de Josquin Desprez, avec la présence à la deuxième voix d’un cantus firmus issu de la mélodie de choral. La version enregistrée ici ne présente que le premier couplet. La même musique est utilisée pour les deux autres couplets, Wir glauben auch an Jesum Christ et Wir glauben all an den Heiligen Geist.

Bathasar Resinarius : Vater unser der du bist im Himmel Pour le Vater unser, nous avons choisi une version polyphonique assez archaïque de Balthasar Resinarius (c. 1486-c. 1555). Ce dernier, chantre à la chapelle impériale de Maximilien Ier sous la direction de Heinrich Isaac, est actif en Bohème où il est l’un des principaux défenseurs de la Réforme.

Deutsches Requiem Thomas Selle : Die mit Tränen saën Andreas Hammerschmidt : Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen Heinrich Schütz : Selig sind die Toten On sait que lorsque Johannes Brahms conçoit son Deutsches Requiem « sur des textes des écritures saintes » (op. 45), ses modèles, outre la lecture des textes, sont bien les compositions de ces admirables polyphonistes du début du XVIIe siècle. Il est évidemment tentant de se demander si Brahms a pu trouver des mises en musique anciennes de tous ces textes. Après moult recherches, pour la formation polyphonique sans participation instrumentale, nous avons trouvé ces trois motets de compositeurs déjà présents dans cette anthologie : Heinrich Schütz, Andreas Hammerschmidt et Thomas Selle. Voici trois compositions d’une rare beauté qui nous conduisent, dans cet esprit de recueillement, vers la conclusion de ce programme en hommage à Martin Luther.

In memoriam Martin Luther Samuel Scheidt : Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ À nouveau un choral du Görlitzer Tablaturbuch. Le texte de supplication de ce choral « Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, ich bitt, erhör mein Klagen ; verleih mir Gnad zur dieser Frist, laß mich doch nicht verzagen » (Je t’appelle, Seigneur Jésus-Christ, je t’en prie, écoute mes plaintes; donne-moi la grâce à cette heure, ne me laisse pas désespérer) est une belle introduction vers la dernière pièce de cet enregistrement.

Caspar Othmayr : Mein himmlischer Vater À vrai dire, Caspar Othmayr (1515-1553) n’entre pas directement dans le cénacle des proches de Luther. On sait qu’il a rencontré Johann Walter à Torgau et que, dès 1545, il a rejoint le mouvement de la Réforme. Othmayr ne pouvait être absent de cette anthologie. Son nom apparaît comme harmonisateur de nombreux chorals, mais il est aussi l’auteur d’un hommage musical à Luther lui-même. Le motet à cinq voix Mein himmlischer Vater porte la mention « Verba Lutheri ultima » ; sous la forme d’un cantus firmus, ce texte est confié à la voix de premier ténor, qui chante effectivement les dernières paroles que Luther aurait prononcées sur son lit de mort : « In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum. LUTHER UND DIE MUSIK DER REFORMATION __ Wer singt, betet doppelt.

Martin Luther Am 21. März, dem ersten Frühlingstag des Jahres 1685, wurde in Eisenach jener Musiker geboren, der von der Musikgeschichte für den größten Komponisten gehalten wird, den Deutschland der protestantischen Liturgie geschenkt hat. Einige Monate später, am 18. Oktober, unterzeichnete Ludwig XIV. das Edikt von Fontainebleau, mit dem er den Freiheiten der Hugenotten ein Ende setzte, da es das 1598 von Heinrich IV. erlassene Edikt von Nantes aufhob. Natürlich handelt es sich um einen Zufall, doch ist er von Bedeutung, da die Auswanderung der französischen Protestanten nach Deutschland eine wichtige Rolle bei der musikalischen Entwicklung Johann Sebastian Bachs spielen sollte.

Doch dass diese Feststellung der Ausgangspunkt dieses Artikels ist, hat nichts mit Zufall zu tun. Im April 1521 wusste Martin Luther, nachdem er seiner Überzeugung auf dem Reichstag zu Worms entschlossen Ausdruck verliehen hatte, dass er verfolgt und dass jeder, der bereit sei, ihn zu schützen, verurteilt werden würde. Die Zusicherung freien Geleits, die ihm Kaiser Karl V. zugestanden hatte, um nach Worms zu kommen, war nur von kurzer Dauer und sollte mit der Veröffentlichung des Edikts zur Umsetzung der Beschlüsse des Reichstages seine Gültigkeit verlieren. Schließlich hatte der sächsische Kurfürst Friedrich der Weise die Idee, eine Entführung vorzutäuschen und Luther auf der Wartburg Zuflucht zu gewähren, also in Eisenach am Gipfel des Hügels, der die Stadt beherrscht. Dort nutzte Luther die Zeit, um viele grundlegende Schriften zu verfassen und mit der deutschen Übersetzung des Neuen Testaments zu beginnen.

Als Johann Sebastian Bach etwas mehr als eineinhalb Jahrhunderte später dort zur Welt kam, waren Thüringen sowie ein Großteil Mittel- und Norddeutschlands mehrheitlich protestantisch geworden. Die Schrecken des Dreißigjährigen Krieges waren allerdings noch nicht 56

vergessen. Im Jahre 1648 hatte der Westfälische Friede dieser vor allem durch religiöse Konflikte ausgelösten Kriegszeit ein Ende gesetzt, die fast alle europäischen Länder betroffen hatte, deren Hauptschlachtfeld jedoch eben dieses Mitteldeutschland war. Die Erinnerungen an die Gräuel verblassten aber nicht in wenigen Jahren; und wenn der Glaube auch bestimmt eines der wichtigsten Mittel war, um die Schmerzen zu lindern, so vermittelt uns die geistliche Musik noch heute ein deutliches, ergreifendes Bild davon. Luther hatte, vielleicht ohne die Macht der Musik in dieser Zeit zu ahnen, das Richtige getan, als er dem Gesang bei der Organisation der Gottesdienste und des geistlichen Lebens einen entscheidenden Platz zuwies.

Luthers Reform Der 1483 in Eisleben in Thüringen geborene Martin Luther hätte ein friedliches Leben zwischen Kloster (er trat 1505 in den Augustinerorden ein) und Universitätskarriere führen können. Das war jedoch keineswegs der Fall. Möglicherweise war ein Aufenthalt in Rom 1510 der Ausgangspunkt aller seiner Zweifel gegenüber der katholischen Kirche, ihrer Auffassung des Glaubens und ihres Verhaltens, da sie sich in der Welt als eine politische, ja sogar finanzielle Macht durchsetzte! Die Reformationsbewegung ging von der Universität Wittenberg aus, die der Kurfürst Friedrich der Weise von Sachsen gegründet hatte und an der Luther unterrichtete.

Luther war dort nicht isoliert: Einige seiner Kollegen hatten sich ihm angeschlossen und spielten später auch bei der Verbreitung der Reformation eine bedeutende Rolle. Unter ihnen befanden sich Philipp Melanchthon und Georg Burckardt, genannt Spalatin, der Berater Friedrichs des Weisen.

Luther griff die Kirche an verschiedenen Punkten an; zunächst dachte er über die Grundlagen des christlichen Glaubens nach, über eine Rückkehr zu den wesentlichen Quellen, d.h. zur Heiligen Schrift ohne alle Interpretationen, die sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte angesammelt hatten. Doch was in der Kirche sicher die größten Feindseligkeiten auslöste, war Luthers Kampf gegen ihre Machtposition. Der Ausgangspunkt dazu war sein heftiger Angriff gegen das Ablasssystem. Unter den anfechtbarsten Beispielen dieses Ablasshandels war jener, den Julius II. 1506 gewährte und Leo X. 1515 erneuerte: Dabei wurde der Ablass jenen gewährt, die zum Wiederaufbau der Peterskirche 57

in Rom beisteuerten. Als Zeuge dieser Praktiken und vieler anderer ähnlicher, in Deutschland beobachteter Abwege reagierte Luther heftig und verfasste ab dem Anschlag seiner 95 Thesen im Jahre 1517 zahlreiche polemische Schriften. Die Reaktion Roms ließ nicht auf sich warten, und 1520 wurde Luther mit Exkommunikation gedroht. Da er feststellte, dass seine Ideen mit bestimmten politischen Ansichten übereinstimmten, verfasste er eine neue Schrift An den christlichen Adel deutscher Nation von des christlichen Standes Besserung. Daraufhin wurde er exkommuniziert. Beim Reichstag, der von Karl V. 1521 einberufenen wurde, beharrte Luther auf seinen Standpunkten.

Seinen Ansichten gemäß heiratete er 1525 und setzte seine Aktion unablässig bis zu seinem Tod 1546 fort.

Als der Reichstag 1555 zu Augsburg zusammentrat, hatte ein Teil von Luthers Kampf sein Ziel erreicht. Der Augsburger Religionsfriede akzeptierte die religiöse (und politische) Aufteilung des deutschen Reichs. Kurz gesagt, nur das Rheinland und Bayern blieben katholisch, während das gesamte restliche Deutschland protestantisch wurde. Doch bekanntlich war diese Aufteilung gar nicht so willkürlich. Es kam zu erstaunlichen Situationen, wie etwa in der Stadt Dresden, deren Hof katholisch geblieben war, während die Kirchen der Stadt protestantisch wurden.

In der Zwischenzeit verbreiteten sich die Ideen und die Lehre Luthers in Europa. Doch Luther war für diese ideologischen und geistlichen Bewegungen nicht allein verantwortlich.

Zwingli in Zürich, Calvin in Frankreich und Genf, Bucer in Straßburg – um nur die wichtigsten zu nennen – entwickelten ihre eigenen Anschauungen über die Reformen des christlichen Glaubens. Ganz wie Luther kämpften sie energisch, um ihre Positionen zu verteidigen, lösten in ihrer Umgebung und untereinander leidenschaftliche Debatten aus, aber auch manchmal blinde Feindseligkeiten und ungerechte Verurteilungen. Die Geschichte der Reformation zeigt, dass die Grundlagen dieser Überlegungen viele Reaktionen auslösten, die oft von nationalen und politischen Erfordernissen diktiert wurden.

dieser geistlichen Bewegungen auf die schöpferische Kraft der Musik und ihre Rolle im Gottesdienst wichtig.

Die lutherische Liturgie baut auf den Schriften des Alten und Neuen Testaments auf.

Allerdings werden einige Texte von den Protestanten ausgeschlossen, hauptsächlich die als apokryph betrachteten (Das Buch Jesus Sirach, das Buch der Weisheit, das Buch Tobit usw.). Unter den Texten des Alten Testaments hat das Buch der Psalmen, das übrigens von Luther ausführlich kommentiert wurde, eine kapitale Bedeutung. Außerdem ist zu betonen, dass die protestantische Liturgie jeden Kult ablehnt, der mit der Persönlichkeit von Heiligen zusammenhängt. Auch der Marienkult ist aus der Liturgie ausgeschlossen, was aber natürlich kein Hindernis für die Anerkennung Marias als Mutter von Jesus ist, ihr aber keine Rolle als eventuelle Vermittlerin bei Gott zuspricht! Auf musikalischem Gebiet ist die direkte Folge davon natürlich, dass all die oft sehr ergreifenden Texte ausgeschlossen werden, die mit so viel Zärtlichkeit und Emotion von den katholischen Komponisten in Musik gesetzt wurden. Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist die Reaktion J.S. Bachs, als er am Ende seines Lebens Pergolesis Stabat Mater entdeckt: Da er auf diese Musik nicht verzichten will, unterlegt er ihr einen anderen Text, nämlich den des Psalms 51: Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden (d.h. des Miserere). Ein Jahrhundert früher handelte Franz Tunder ebenso, indem er der Musik der einstimmigen Motette Salve Regina von Giovanni Rovetta den Text Salve mi Jesu gab. Allerdings behielt das evangelische Kirchenjahr einige Feste, die an die Jungfrau Maria gebunden sind, bei: Die Reinigung (Darstellung im Tempel, die u.a. mit Bachs Kantate Ich habe genug, BWV 82, gefeiert wird), die Heimsuchung und die Verkündigung, ohne natürlich Weihnachten zu vergessen, wo der Name der Jungfrau Maria häufig auftaucht.

Zwar wird Deutsch zur Hauptsprache der Liturgie, doch verschwindet das Lateinische nicht.

Luther hat das auch nicht gewünscht, da er Latein noch als die Sprache des Wissens betrachtete.

Aus diesem Grund verfasste er einen großen Katechismus auf Latein für die Kleriker und die Gebildeten und einen kleinen Katechismus auf Deutsch für das Volk. In den großen Städten empfahl Luther, Latein noch oft zu gebrauchen (selbst für die Lesungen, die auf Latein und/ oder auf Deutsch stattfinden konnten). Das gleiche gilt für die Teile des Ordinariums, die die 59

evangelischen Liturgie beibehält (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus und Agnus Dei).

Im Bereich der Sakramente bleiben in der Liturgie nur die Taufe, die Beichte und das Abendmahl (Brot und Wein) erhalten. Zwar wird die letzte Ölung abgeschafft, doch die Totenmesse bleibt erhalten, wird aber wie ein normaler Gottesdienst organisiert und enthält nicht die für das katholische Requiem typischen Textteile der Messe.

Als Bach den dritten Teil seiner Clavier Übung veröffentlicht, illustriert er darin mit dem monumentalen Präludium und der grandiosen Fuge die Grundsteine der lutherischen Religion: Gesetz, Glaube und Gebet einerseits und die drei Sakramente andererseits (Taufe, Beichte, Abendmahl).

Der zentrale Teil des evangelischen Gottesdiensts ist die Predigt, die von zwei Musikstücken umrahmt wird, d.h. von Musik, die man mit dem allgemeinen Begriff „Kantate“ bezeichnen sollte. Dieser Platz der Kantate innerhalb des Gottesdiensts erklärt, dass einige davon in zwei Teile gegliedert sind.

Luther und die Musik Luthers Rolle im Bereich der Musik ist bedeutend, doch ist es zweifellos auch interessant, um nicht zu sagen wesentlich, einen kurzen generellen Überblick über das deutsche Musikleben dieser Zeit zu geben und dabei bis in die letzten Jahre des 15. Jh. zurückzugehen. Was wissen wir genau über die deutsche Musik dieser Zeit? Selbstverständlich ist das Zentrum, von dem das Musikleben beherrscht wird, der Hof Maximilians I. zwischen Wien und Innsbruck. Bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 1519 versammelt seine Musikkapelle die bedeutendsten Komponisten der Zeit, unter anderen Heinrich Isaac mit seinem flämischen Können und seiner Kenntnis der italienischen Musik, den aus Zürich stammenden Ludwig Senfl oder den Organisten Paul Hofhaimer. Der polyphone flämische Stil herrscht dort uneingeschränkt vor, wie die Motette „Imperii proceres“ beweist, die von Isaac zu Ehren des Kaisers geschrieben wurde. Im profanen Bereich ist eine spezifische Gattung beliebt: das „Tenorlied“, ein drei- oder vierstimmiges Stück, bei dem sich die Hauptmelodie nicht im „Sopran“, sondern eben im „Tenor“ befindet (die anderen Stimmen sind oft instrumental). Außerhalb von Maximilians Hof enthält eine ganze Reihe von 60

Handschriften Kompositionen verschiedener Herkunft, zum Großteil deutsche – leider! – anonyme Werke, zu denen einige Stücke der berühmtesten französisch-flämischen Komponisten des 15. Jh. hinzukommen; unter diesen Sammelbänden befindet sich auch das„Glogauer Liederbuch“ (das seinen Namen der Stadt verdankt, aus der es kommt). Die überwiegende Mehrheit der Stücke ist profan, ob es sich um vokale oder instrumentale Kompositionen handelt, was in dieser Zeit ziemlich selten ist und angeblich eine Besonderheit der deutschen Musik widerspiegelt.

Doch finden sich darin auch einige religiöse Werke auf Latein und erstaunlicherweise auch andere in deutscher Sprache. Und das im ausgehenden 15. Jh.! Das nimmt die Ideen Luthers hinsichtlich des Gebrauchs der Landessprache im geistlichen Repertoire vorweg. Doch muss man zugeben, dass diese handschriftlichen Zeugnisse auf ein Gebiet beschränkt sind, das über die kulturellen Zentren des Reichs und die Regionen Süddeutschlands nicht hinausgeht. Außerdem hatte sich der musikalische Buchdruck, der in Venedig und dann auch in Frankreich florierte, in Deutschland zu Beginn des 16. Jh. noch nicht eingebürgert. Es ist mehr als wahrscheinlich, dass die einzigen Beispiele für polyphone Musik, die in Luthers Hände hätten kommen können, einige italienische Publikationen waren, wobei es sich sicher um geistliche Werke jenes Musikers handelte, dem unbestritten der Großteil der ersten venezianischen Publikationen galt, dem absoluten Meister der „Ars perfecta“: Josquin Desprez, den Luther sehr schätzte. Doch zu Beginn der Jahre 1510 hielt der musikalische Buchdruck auch in Deutschland Einzug; er widmete sich zunächst der Veröffentlichung von Liederbüchern.

Im Bereich der Musik war es Luthers erste Sorge – mit Hilfe seiner Ratgeber und der mit ihm befreundeten Musiker –, ein Grundrepertoire zu bilden, das aus Chorälen besteht und die spätere Basis der Musik für die Gottesdienste bilden sollte. So veröffentlichte Johann Walter 1524 in Wittenberg eine erste Ausgabe des „Geistlichen Gesangbüchleins“. Die Choralsammlungen sollten im Laufe der Jahrhunderte in dichter Aufeinanderfolge entstehen. So enthalten 1544 die „Newen Deudschen Geistlichen Gesenge “ von Rhaw 123 Choräle, die nach dem Kirchenjahr geordnet sind. Die Zahl der genannten Komponisten zeugt von der Bedeutung ihrer Aktivität im Rahmen der Entwicklung der reformierten Kirche: Neben sehr wenig bekannten Namen finden 61

sich auch Martin Agricola, Arnold von Burck, Lupus Hellinck, Ludwig Senfl, Thomas Stolzer, Lucas Osiander usw.

Das Prinzip der Choralmelodie beruht auf Silben, auf ihrer Fortspinnung in einer einfachen, regelmäßigen Metrik (in halben und Viertelnoten) und auf dem Anspruch, leicht im Gedächtnis zu bleiben, damit die Choräle von den Gläubigen auswendig gelernt und von ihnen beim Gottesdienst und zu anderen Gelegenheiten, wie zum Beispiel bei Andachtsübungen im Familienkreis, gesungen werden können. Was die Komposition dieser Choralmelodien betrifft, so scheint ein Großteil original zu sein, doch andere sind von vorhandenen Melodien ausgeliehen, wobei man auf alle Arten von Repertoire zurückgriff, also sowohl auf gregorianische Melodien als auch auf profane Lieder! Das ist zum Beispiel beim Osterchoral „Christ lag in Todesbanden“ der Fall, der von „Victimae pascali laudes“) inspiriert ist. Auch das berühmte italienische Volkslied „Madre non mi far monaca“, das unter dem Titel „La Jeune Fillette“ oder „Une Jeune Pucelle“ ins Französische übersetzt wurde und dessen französische Texte von der Jungfräulichkeit Mariens handeln, benutzte man als Choralmelodie, um den Text „Helf mir Gottes Güte preisen“ zu vertonen.

Bach verwendete diesen Choral als Abschluss der Kantate BWV 73 (für den dritten Sonntag nach der Epiphanie) mit dem Vers „Das ist des Vaters Wille“. Die Rhythmen sind größtenteils binär, was aber ternäre Rhythmen für solche Choräle nicht ausschließt, die mit besonderen Festlichkeiten im Zusammenhang stehen, wie etwa mit Weihnachten oder der Auferstehung, wofür das berühmte „In dulci Jubilo“ mit seinem lateinisch gebliebenen Text ein Beispiel ist.

Martin Luther war wie viele Geistliche selbst Musiker. Man sagt, dass er sogar imstande war, polyphone Musik zu singen und einige Bildquellen stellen ihn beim Lautenspiel dar! Er soll auch einige Choräle komponiert haben, und zwar besonders den, der zweifellos die Grundlagen seines Denkens am besten symbolisiert: „Eine feste Burg ist unser Gott“.

Obwohl der Choral ursprünglich monodisch ist, eignet er sich sehr bald die Vorzüge der Polyphonie an, doch besteht er vor allem unter Beachtung der rhythmischen Einfachheit auf einem homophonen Satz, also einer Kompositionstechnik, die noch Johann Sebastian Bach befolgte! Auf die Veröffentlichung monodischer Choralbände folgen also polyphone 62

Sammlungen. Schließlich setzt sich auch die Vollkommenheit der imitierenden Polyphonie bei den Komponisten der Reformation durch, und so scheinen in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jh. nach und nach die ersten großen Zeugnisse ihrer Beherrschung dieser Kunst auf dem Gebiet der geistlichen Musik auf.

Die Bedeutung des protestantischen Chorals Der Choral ist definitiv das symbolträchtige Element der lutherischen Musik. Dazu ist zu sagen, dass das Repertoire des gesamten Kirchenjahrs festgesetzt war, und es viele einfache polyphone und homophone Fassungen für den Gottesdienst gab. Aus welchem Grund sollte man also noch mehr Fassungen hinzufügen? Einer der wichtigsten Sammelbände vierstimmiger harmonisierter Choräle aus dem 17. Jh. ist der „Becker Psalter“, den Heinrich Schütz 1628 herausgab. Es handelt sich zweifellos um eine der seltenen Verwendungen des protestantischen Chorals im Werk dieses berühmten Komponisten, der sich weit mehr im Repertoire der „Geistlichen Konzerte“ oder der Oratorien durchsetzte.

In Fortsetzung der polyphonen Tradition wird dagegen der Gebrauch des Chorals als Grundmelodie oder als Cantus firmus sehr wichtig. Er gehört nun voll und ganz zum Themenmaterial, aus dem die Komponisten schöpfen. In dieser Hinsicht stellt Michael Praetorius sicher einen der interessantesten Komponisten dar. Sein 1619 erschienener Band „Polyhymnia Caduceatrix & Panegyrica“ verleiht dem protestantischen Choral eine bemerkenswert festliche Dimension. Praetorius vereint die Choralmelodien mit der polyphonen, (typisch venezianischen) mehrchörigen Kompositionsweise und ihren prächtigsten Prinzipien der italienischen Musik. Jede Komposition ist originell und lässt die Gesangssolisten, die Chöre und die Instrumentalensembles gemeinsam spielen.

Im Laufe der Kommentare zu den Werken werden wir Gelegenheit haben, den Gebrauch der Choralmelodien sowohl in der Vokal- als auch in der Orgelmusik hervorzuheben.

Die Komponisten Die Aufnahmen dieser Anthologie stellen Werke vieler Komponisten zusammen, die von der Generation Martin Luthers bis zu der von Heinrich Schütz reichen. Der Hauptmitarbeiter von Luther ist Johann Walter (1496-1570). In der thüringischen Stadt Kahla geboren, wird er Vorsänger am Hof Friedrichs des Weisen. Nach dessen Tod begibt er sich zu Luther nach Wittenberg, bevor er eine feste Anstellung in Torgau erhält, wo er sich bis zu seinem Tod aufhält.

Sein Beitrag zur Bildung des Choralrepertoires ist grundlegend und wird von Luther unterstützt, der 1524 das Vorwort zur Publikation des ersten Bandes schreibt. Doch Johann Walter komponiert auch eine sehr komplexe polyphone Musik, wobei er nicht zögert, an sechs- oder siebenstimmige Strukturen heranzugehen, egal ob es sich um Stücke in lateinischer (wie mehrere Fassungen des „Magnificat“) oder in deutscher Sprache handelt. Was an den Komponisten Mitteldeutschlands zu Beginn des 17. Jh. auffällt, ist die Vielfalt der Stile, die Verschiedenartigkeit der Kompositionsarten und vor allem die Rolle des italienischen Einflusses. Im Gegensatz zu dem, was man annehmen könnte, ist das evangelische Repertoire nicht nüchtern. Es ist in Hinblick auf die Texte immer treffend und ihnen nahe. Der österliche Jubel oder die frische Naivität der Weihnachtsstücke können im starken Kontrast zu dem tiefen Schmerz der Verzweiflung stehen, bei dem sich die Seele des Sünders flehend an ihren Erlöser wendet. Man kann dieses Repertoire unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten betrachten, sei es von den formalen Konzeptionen aus oder einfach, indem man die Komponisten erwähnt. Diese unglaubliche schöpferische Fruchtbarkeit entwickelt sich hauptsächlich in zwei Regionen: in Mitteldeutschland (Thüringen und Sachsen) und in Norddeutschland, allen voran in den großen Hansestädten Hamburg und Lübeck. Dieses Kapitel wird sich mit den Gattungen und Formen auseinandersetzen.

Doch bevor wir uns der Musik selbst zuwenden, müssen wir zweifellos kurz etwas über die Komponisten schreiben.

Die lutherische Reformation geht von Mitteldeutschland aus, das auch der Ausgangspunkt für diese bemerkenswerte musikalische Entwicklung ist. Die Musik nimmt in den Kirchen eine bedeutende Stellung ein, und der Posten des „Kantors“ wird fast noch mehr begehrt als der eines 64

Hofmusikers. Im ausgehenden 16. Jh. werden in dieser Gegend zahlreiche Persönlichkeiten geboren : Michael Praetorius (um 1571-1621), der für sein Talent als Komponist ebenso berühmt ist wie als Theoretiker, Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654), Organist und Schüler von Sweelinck, Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630), einer der Vorläufer J.S. Bachs an der Thomaskirche von Leipzig, Johann Rudolf Ahle oder Andreas Hammerschmidt usw. Doch der bedeutendste Komponist dieser Generation ist Heinrich Schütz, der nach Venedig reiste, um bei Giovanni Gabrieli zu studieren, und sich 1628 ein zweites Mal in der Dogenstadt aufhielt, bei dieser Gelegenheit sicher Monteverdi kennenlernte und seine Musik hörte. Zwar steht er hauptberuflich im Dienst der Kapelle von Dresden, doch reist Schütz auch viel, u.zw. bis in die skandinavischen Länder und sogar in die Niederlande: Während eines Aufenthalts in Amsterdam wird er von Rembrandt porträtiert.

Es ist bekannt, dass Schütz, Scheidt und Praetorius einander 1619 anlässlich der Einweihung einer Orgel in Bayreuth trafen. Die leidenschaftlichen Gespräch der drei Musiker, die von ihren Reisen und Entdeckungen erzählten, kann man sich leicht vorstellen. Doch sie kannten einander schon mindestens seit dem Vorjahr, denn sie hatten den Auftrag, der Kathedrale von Magdeburg Werke im „konzertanten Stil“ zu verschaffen. Unter den Schülern von Schütz gibt es übrigens einige Komponisten, die in der Folge in den Städten Norddeutschlands Karriere machen sollten: Mathias Weckman und Christoph Bernhardt.

Neben den polyphonen Kompositionen finden sich in dieser Anthologie auch einige Orgelstücke, da das Instrument für die Organisation des evangelischen Gottesdienstes unabkömmlich war. Ab dem Beginn des 16. Jh. gewinnt die Orgel in den Kirchen große Bedeutung, ja sogar in den Dorfkirchen. Die Instrumente werden größer, weisen zwei, drei und sogar vier Manuale auf, ohne das Pedal zu vergessen, das in Deutschland im Gegensatz zu den anderen europäischen Ländern besonders ausgearbeitet ist ; ihr Tonumfang beträgt mindestens zwei Oktaven, sie besitzten unterschiedliche Register und werden mit immer größerer Virtuosität gespielt, die ihren Höhepunkt am Ende des 17. Jh. in Norddeutschland mit dem berühmten « Stylus fantasticus » von Buxtehude oder Reinken erreicht. Neben freien Stücken, die oft von den 65

Modellen des ersten italienischen Barocks inspiriert sind, baut die überwiegende Mehrzahl der Kompositionen auf Choralthemen auf. Übrigens besteht die wichtigste Aufgabe des Organisten darin, die von den Gläubigen gesungenen Choräle zu begleiten.

CD I Das Kirchenjahr Heinrich Scheidemann: Praeambulum in d Heinrich Scheidemann (um 1595-1663) war in Hamburg an der Kirche St. Katharinen tätig. Zweifellos hatte er seine Kenntnis der italienischen Musik beim Organisten Jan Piterszoon Sweelinck in Amsterdam vervollkommnen können. Mit seinen Frage-und-Antwort-Spielen auf den verschiedenen Manualen erinnert dieses hier organo pleno gespielte Stück unvermeidlich an die venezianischen poylchoralen Canzone.

Advent Michael Altenburg: Nun komm der Heiden Heiland Michael Altenburg (1584-1640) übte seine Funktionen als Theologe, Pastor, Pädagoge und Musiker in Erfurt aus. Sein Werk blieb der polyphonen Tradition treu, wovon seine Adventmotette zeugt. Sechsstimmig angelegt, verwendet sie zwei deutlich unterscheidbare Kompositionsweisen: Der erste Teil entwickelt die Choralmelodie im imitativen Stil, während der zweite mehrere Strophen hindurch im vertikalen Stil harmonisiert ist. Bei der hier vorliegenden Interpretation spielt der Organist eine verzierte Fassung des Chorals, indem er eine der Strophen ersetzt. Es ist wahrscheinlich, dass diese Verse auch von den Gläubigen gesungen werden konnten, was man im letzten Choralvers hören kann, in dem alle Stimmen unisono von der Orgel „im vollen Werk“ begleitet werden.

Weihnacht Andreas Hammerschmidt: Freude, Freude, große Freude Die Motette dieses vor allem in Zittau tätigen Schülers von Schütz gehört zu den Werken, die die Freude über die Geburt Christi ausdrücken. Der Text übernimmt die Worte der Engel an die Hirten. Im zweiten Teil wohnt man einem Dialog zwischen den tiefen und den hohen Stimmen bei: einer richtigen Theaterszene zwischen den Hirten und den Hirtinnen, die in einem wiegenden ternären Rhythmus das „Jesulein“ bewundern und versuchen, es in den Schlaf zu wiegen... Das Stück verwendet unbestreitbar die Effekte des italienischen Madrigals zu expressiven Zwecken.

Diese Feststellung wird übrigens durch den Titel der Sammung bestätigt, aus der dieses Stück stammt: Musikalische Andachten, Chormusik auf Madrigalmanier (1652). Der Text könnte von Hammerschmidt selbst sein.

Paul Siefert: Puer natus in Bethlehem Die gesamte Karriere Paul Sieferts (1586-1666) als Komponist aber auch als Organist verlief in Danzig. Wie viele seiner Zeitgenossen reiste er nach Amsterdam, um bei Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck zu studieren. Hier behandelt er den Choral Puer Natus in Bethlehem in Form eines Zyklus von fünf Variationen, die erlauben, verschiedenene Registrierungen zu verwenden. Wie mehrere Choräle der Weihnachtszeit steht Puer Natus in Bethlehem in einem ternären Rhythmus.

Michael Praetorius: Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen Dieser Choral ist in den Choralsammlungen nur sehr selten vertreten und fehlt so gut wie ganz im sehr umfangreichen Repertoire der Orgelstücke, abgesehen von der sehr schönen Fassung, die Johannes Brahms gegen Ende seines Lebens schrieb! Der hier der Orgel anvertraute Vers ist also wieder eine Improvisation des Organisten. Der Choral wird mit seinem nostalgischen Charakter sehr eng mit dem Weihnachtsfest in Zusammenhang gebracht. Noch heute kommen ihm zahlreiche Fassungen in fremden Sprachen zugute, unter denen sich einige völlig vom Originaltext unterscheiden, wie das bei der französischen Fassung Dans une étable obscure der Fall ist.

Neujahr Samuel Scheidt: Das alte Jahr vergangen ist In der lutherischen Liturgie ist die Neujahrsfeier eng mit dem Weihnachtsfest verbunden. Das kann man noch in der Abfolge der Kantaten feststellen, die das Weihnachtsoratorium von Johann Sebastian Bach bilden. Das alte Jahr vergangen ist gehört zu den wichtigsten Chorälen für die Feier des neuen Jahres. Hier handelt es sich um eine Fassung in Form eine Motette für Doppelchor, die jenen nostalgischen Charakter aufweist, der ein untrennbares Element der Widersprüchlichkeit des Weihnachtsfests ist, das sowohl die Erneuerung als auch das unerbittliche Vergehen der Zeit feiert.

Johann Hermann Schein: O Jesulein, mein Jesulein In diesem kleinen geistlichen Konzert ist die Zärtlichkeit allgegenwärtig. Zwei Sopranstimmen (zwei Engel, zwei Hirten?) betrachten darin das Kind und fragen es: „Was bringst du mir vons Himmels Thron?“. Lassen wir uns von diesem Thema nicht in die Irre führen, denn diese Komposition ist tatsächlich für die Neujahrsfeier geschrieben: Sie trägt den Untertitel „Neujahrslied“ und der Text erwähnt, dass das Geschenk, das das Kind der Welt bringt, für das neue Jahr bestimmt ist. Die Komposition stammt aus der Sammlung Opella Nova, die dieser Vorgänger Johann Sebastian Bachs in Leipzig 1618 herausgab. Es handelt sich um eine wichtige Etappe beim Einsatz neuer, von italienischen Modellen inspirierter musikalischer Praktiken, hier mit dem Einsatz zweier Stimmen, die vom Basso continuo begleitet werden.

Canticum Simenonis Michael Praetorius: Herre, nun lässt du deinen Diener in Frieden fahren Diese siebenstimmige Motette bezieht sich auf die letzte Szene der Weihnachtserzählung, d.h. die der Darstellung im Tempel. Der Text übernimmt die Worte Simeons: „Herre, nun lässest du deinen Diener in Friede fahren.“ Ein ternärer Rhythmus leitet die Doxologie ein, die am Ende der Motette auf die drei Personen der Dreifaltigkeit hinweist.

Passion Delphin Strungk: Lass mich dein sein und bleiben Von Delphin Strungk (um 1601-1649) weiß man vor allem, dass er als Organist in mehreren Städten arbeitete: in Wolfenbüttel, Celle und schließlich in Braunschweig. Dieser Orgelchoral gehört in die Gattung der Choralvorspiele; auf der Grundlage einer polyphonen Begleitung entfaltet sich die Choralmelodie auf einer unabhängigen Klaviatur im Sopranregister. Sie wird entweder als einfacher Cantus firmus oder verziert gespielt. Dieser Choral aus der Passionszeit ist mit dem Text O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden bekannt.

Caspar Othmayr: O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß Hier ist ein Beispiel für die ersten gegen Mitte des 16. Jh. entstandenen polyphonen Choräle für vier Stimmen. Dieser Komponist, der nach und nach die lutherische Doktrin annahm, war auf vielen geistlichen wie profanen Gebieten tätig. Die vorliegende Kompositionen baut auf der Choralmelodie auf, die sie hauptsächlich imitativ behandelt. Zu bemerken ist ein Effekt, der sicher von der Musiksprache Josquin Desprez’ übernommen wurde, und zwar in bestimmten Momenten der Wechsel zwischen Passagen, die den zwei Oberstimmen anvertraut sind, mit solchen für die beiden tiefen Stimmen.

Auferstehung Samuel Scheidt: Christ lag in Todesbanden Mit dieser doppelchörigen Motette finden wir die Kompositionsweise wieder, die für Samuel Scheidt so charakteristisch ist. Das ganze Werk hindurch singt jeder Chor jeden Choralvers getrennt, bis sie sich schließlich zu einer Art Bestätigung vereinen. Scheidt hebt sich die systematischen Antwort-Effekte zwischen den beiden Chören für das Ende der Motette auf: „Gott loben und ihm dankbar sein, und singen Halleluja“.

Samuel Scheidt: Christ ist erstanden Diese Fassung des Chorals stammt aus der Sammlung der 100 geistlichen Lieder und Psalmen, die 1650 veröffentlicht wurde. Wie das Vorwort zu dieser Ausgabe angibt, sind die Stücke „Für die Herren Organisten mit der Christlichen Kirchen und Gemeine [sic] auff der Orgel desgleichen auch zu Hause zu spielen und zu singen...“ Himmelfahrt Samuel Scheidt: Ascendo ad patrem meam Diese andere achtstimmige Motette mit Doppelchor von Scheidt ist ein Beispiel für eine Komposition in lateinischer Sprache. Zu bemerken sind hier deutlich madrigaleske Effekte: das aufsteigende Motiv der einleitenden Melodie und die Verstärkung dieser Idee des Aufstiegs durch die Melodie mit ihren raschen Noten. Am Ende der Motette unterstreicht die Verwendung des ternären Rhythmus den Ausdruck der Freude über den Worten „et gaudebit cor vestrum, alleluia“.

Pfingsfest Thomas Selle Veni, Sancte Spiritus Thomas Selle, Schüler Johann Hermann Scheins in Leipzig, machte in Hamburg Karriere. Sein prächtiges Veni, sancte spiritus ist für drei Chöre mit verschiedenen Stimmlagen geschrieben. Der erste erfordert zwei Soprane, Alt und Tenor, der zweite die vier herkömmlichen Stimmen (Sopran, Alt, Tenor und Bass) und der dritte tiefere Stimmen (Alt, 2 Tenöre und Bass). Das führt zu einem sehr ausgedehnten Tonumfang, u.zw. sowohl in den äußerst hohen Lagen (a) als auch bis zu den tiefsten (d). Abgesehen von einigen eindrucksvollen Momenten der Überlagerung der drei Chöre, besteht das Wesentliche dieser lateinischen Motette aus der Aufeinanderfolge von Sequenzen, die jedem Chor extra anvertraut sind. An einigen Stellen wird derselbe Text von den drei Chören übernommen. Der Effekt des raschen Wechsels zwischen den Chören ist als madrigalesker Effekt auf die Worte „in labore“ besonders bemerkenswert. Eine räumliche Aufteilung dieser Motette ist gut vorstellbar, so dass wir sie insofern durchführten, als wir den ersten Chor links, den zweiten rechts und den dritten im Zentrum aufstellten.

Trinitatis Bartholomäus Gesius: Der du bist in Einigkeit Das Werk dieses Komponisten (um 1555-1613) würde es verdienen, viel bekannter zu sein. Gesius war vor allem in Frankfurt an der Oder tätig und zählte so bedeutende Musiker wie Michael Praetorius zu seinen Schülern. Er veröffentlichte mehrere, teilweise sehr umfangreiche Sammlungen, in denen er versuchte, eine große Vielfalt an liturgischen Gesängen, harmonisierten lutherischen Chorälen und Stücken von komplizierterer Kompositionsweise zusammenzustellen.

Sicher ist es kein Zufall, dass diese kleine Motette über die Dreifaltigkeit für drei hohe Stimmen geschrieben ist, die sich kreuzen. Der deutsche Text übernimmt Martin Luthers Übersetzung der Hymne O lux beata trinitas.

Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott Die Wahl dieses Chorals als Titel des vorliegenden Boxsets ist kein Zufall. Vom Psalm 46 inspiriert, übersetzte ihn Martin Luther zum ersten Mal in die deutsche Sprache und komponierte die Melodie dazu.

Der quasi militärische Text macht sofort verständlich, warum dieser Choral ab Luthers Generation und danach während des Dreißigjährigen Krieges als ein richtiges Bekenntnislied der Lutherianer galt. Daher ist es logisch, dass dieser Choral in den nächsten Generationen die Grundlage für die Komposition von Kantaten bildete, die bei den Gottesdiensten zum Jahrestag der Reformation aufgeführt wurden. Das ist der Fall der gleichnamigen Kantate Johann Sebastian Bachs (BWV 80), die am 31. Oktober 1724 in Leipzig gesungen wurde. Im Jahre 1830 schrieb Felix Mendelssohn anlässlich des dreihundertsten Jahrestags des Augsburger Bekenntnisses eine neue Symphonie. Der vierte und letzte Satz dieser Fünften Symphonie ist eine Reihe von Variationen über den Choral Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott.

Melchior Franck: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott Nach einer A-capella-Fassung wie sie von den Gläubigen in der Zeit Luthers hätte gesungen werden können, stellen wir hier eine fünfstimmige polyphone Version von Melchior Franck (um 1580-1639) vor, einem Komponisten, der seine Ausbildung in Augsburg und Nürnberg (bei Hans 71

Leo Hassler) erhielt. Melchior Francks Laufbahn verlief gänzlich im Dienst des Herzogs Johann Casimir von Sachsen-Coburg. Diese Stadt war durch den Dreißigjährigen Krieg besonders in Mitleidenschaft gezogen worden, so dass der Nachfolger Johann Casimirs nach dessen Tod im Jahre 1633 die Besetzung der Kappelle drastisch einschränken musste. Franck blieb aber dennoch bis zu seinem Tod 1639 dort. Hier verstärkt die mit „Organo-pleno“-Begleitung selbstverständlich den Charakter des Chorals.

Michael Praetorius: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (Fantasie) Mit derselben kräftigen Registrierung (die diese „Festung“ wirkungsvoll darstellt) beginnt die Choralfantasie von Michael Praetorius, einem Komponisten, dessen theoretische Schriften, die TerpsichoreTänze und bestimmte geistliche Vokalwerke gut bekannt sind, während man auf seinen Organistenberuf oft vergisst. Dabei war Michael Praetorius wie viele seiner Zeitgenossen ein brillanter Organist, wovon einige besonders entwickelte Kompositionen zeugen, z.B. diese Choralfantasien, die eine zu Beginn des 17. Jh. neu auftretende Gattung darstellen. Da man weiß, dass die damaligen Organisten vor allem Improvisatoren waren, ist anzunehmen, dass diese umfangreichen Stücke ursprünglich als Improvisationen entstanden, wie man sie bei den Gottesdiensten als musikalischen Komentar über die Themen der Tagesliturgie einfügte.

Das Prinzip dieser Fantasien beruht also auf der Fortspinnung des Choralthemas, seiner Variationen und Verzierungen, wobei es auch darum ging, mit allen Mitteln der Kunst den Text der verschiedenen Verse zu illustrieren.

CD II Die Fundamente der lutherischen Liturgie Deutsches Magnificat Heinrich Schütz : Meine Seele erhebt den Herren Unter den Texten, die vom alten römischen Repertoire übernommen wurde, behält das Magnificat sehr große Bedeutung in der lutherischen Liturgie. Es wird bei den Vespern, aber auch 72

beim Weihnachtsgottesdienst gesungen. Dieser Text, der auch unter dem Titel „Lobgesang Marias“ bekannt ist, stammt aus dem Lukasevangelium und entspricht den Worten der Jungfrau Maria, als sie nach der Verkündigung ihre Cousine Elisabeth besucht. Er wurde vielfach und in verschiedenen Formen vertont. Sehr häufig bringen die Ausgaben des Magnificat diese Kompositionen systematisch in allen Tonarten heraus, u.zw. zweifellos um sie zu variieren. Das ist bereits der Fall beim Magnificat octo tonorum, das Johann Walter 1557 veröffentlichte. Eine der besonderen Eigenheiten des Magnificat liegt darin, dass es in 8 Strophen von je zwei Zeilen eingeteilt ist, was sich direkt auf die Komposition auswirkt. Eine ganz besondere Gepflogenheit hängt mit der Aufführungspraxis des Magnificat in Zusammenhang; sie geht auf die Renaissance zurück, wo das Prinzip darin bestand, polyphone Verse mit solchen im gregorianischen Choral abzuwechseln (Lassus hat mehr als hundert davon komponiert!). Diese Gepflogenheit bleibt bei den Lutheranern weiterhin aktuell, doch erfährt sie eine merkliche Variante: Der Wechsel vollzieht sich nicht mehr zwischen der Polyphonie und dem gregorianischen Choral, sondern zwischen der Orgel und dem Gesang (der hier entweder polyphonisch oder gregorianisch ist). Für die Organisten nimmt die Improvisation oder Komposition dieser Verse einen Großteil ihrer Aktivität ein. Der erste Vers eines Magnificat im ersten Ton von Michael Praetorius ist ein anschauliches Beispiel dafür.

Heinrich Schütz komponierte vier Fassungen des Magnificat. Bei ihm wie bei seinen Zeitgenossen tauchen die ersten ins Deutsche übersetzten Versionen auf; das ist der Fall des achtstimmigen Deutschen Magnificat, das sich in seinem Op. 13 befindet, einem sicher testamentarischen Werk mit dem Titel Zwölf geistliche Gesänge. Das Werk ist in diesem Fall durchgehend ohne Unterteilung in Verse komponiert. Die beiden Chöre werden im venezianischen Stil gegensätzlich behandelt.

Abgesehen von der Einleitung (7 Takte) und dem Beginn der Doxologie (14 Takte), ist die ganze Komposition in ternärem Rhythmus, was ihr einen eindeutig frohlockenden Charakter verleiht.

Deutsche Messe Christoph Bernhard: Missa super Christ unser Herr Die Komposition polyphoner Messen war eine grundsätzliche, wichtige Aktivität für einen 73

Komponisten geistlicher Musik. Obwohl die Messordnung nicht mehr der wesentliche Teil aller Gottesdienste war, gab es sie weiterhin. Zwar hatte man das Credo ausgeschlossen, doch die anderen Teile, also Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus und Agnus Dei wurden nach wie vor gesungen, wobei die lateinische Sprache in diesem Bereich immer noch aktuell war. Verwendet wurden besonders das Kyrie und das Gloria. Seit dem Beginn des 17. Jh. bis zur Generation Johann Sebastian Bachs gab es aber auch viele Deutsche Messen. In den meisten Fällen setzten diese Kompositionen die Renaissancetradition fort, indem sie von einem gewählten Thema ‒ bei den Lutheranern einem Choral – ausgehen. Das ist der Fall der Messe von Christoph Bernhard, einem Schüler von Paul Siefert und danach von Heinrich Schütz. Wie Schütz hielt er sich zweimal in Italien auf, wo er in Rom Giacomo Carissimi begegnete. Er war in Hamburg als Nachfolger von Thomas Selle tätig. Seine Messe ist über die Choralmelodie Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam geschrieben. Bemerkenswert ist auch, dass es das Gloria in einer Choralfassung mit dem Titel Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr“ gibt. Diese beiden Teile der deutschen Messe finden sich im Dritten Theil der Clavier Übung von Johann Sebastian Bach.

Diese bedeutende Sammlung von Orgelstücken ist nämlich wie eine Illustration der Grundlagen des lutherischen Glaubens aufgebaut. Die beiden Teile der deutschen Messe sind also darin vorhanden. Die drei Abschnitte des Kyrie werden mit der Dreifaltigkeit in Verbindung gebracht: Kyrie, Gott Vater in Ewigkeit / Christe, aller Welt Trost / Kyrie, Gott heiliger Geist. Das Gloria baut auf dem Choral Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr auf.

Die Sakramente In dieser Clavier Übung III verwendet Johann Sebastian Bach drei Choräle, die mit den Sakramenten der lutherischen Kirche zusammenhängen: die Taufe, die Beichte und das Abendmahl, nämlich Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam, Aus tiefer Not und Jesus Christus unser Heiland. Diese Choräle bringen wir Ihnen in Kompositionen seiner Vorgänger zu Gehör.

Hieronymus Praetorius: Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam (Fantaisie) Und hier ein anderer Musiker, der Praetorius hieß, nämlich Hieronymus Praetorius (156074

1629), Sohn des Organisten Jacob Praetorius. Er stammte aus Hamburg, wo er den Großteil seiner Karriere verbrachte. Mit Michael ist er in keiner Weise verwandt. Die Fantasie über den Choral Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam besitzt bereits alle Merkmale dieses so besonderen Stils, der seinen Höhepunkt am Ende des Jahrhunderts mit Reinken und Buxtehude erreichen sollte.

Heinrich Schütz: Aus tiefer Not Der Bußchoral Aus tiefer Not wird hier durch ein Werk wiedergegeben, das man in der bedeutenden lutherischen Choralsammlung finden kann, die Heinrich Schütz 1628 herausgab. Sie enthält die 150 Psalmen in der deutschen Übersetzung des Theologen Cornelius Becker. Auf der Grundlage von Choralmelodien schrieb Schütz harmonisierte vierstimmige Fassungen. Wie es bei manchen Chorälen der Fall ist, besitzt auch dieser zwei verschiedenen Harmonisierungen.

Johann Steffens: Jesus Christus unser Heiland Der Choraltext, Jesus Christus unser Heiland, spielt auf das Abendmahl an und stammt von Martin Luther. Bekanntlich wird das Abendmahl unter zweierlei Gestalten gespendet, woran übrigens der Holzstich von Lucas Cranach dem Älteren erinnert, auf dem man Martin Luther und Jean Hus sieht, wie sie den Kurfürsten Johann von Sachsen und Friedrich III. das Abendmahl spenden (Siehe S. 25). Die hier aufgenommene Choralfantasie ist weniger entwickelt als die von Hieronymus Praetorius. Sie stammt von Johann Steffens (um 1560-1616), einem Organisten, der ebenfalls der nördlichen Tradition verhaftet und Musiker in Lüneburg war.

Deutsche Passion Joachim a Burck: Johannes Passion Neben der Erfindung des Chorals und der Komposition von Motetten im Stil der Ars perfecta, hatten die lutherischen Komponisten sehr bald die Idee, die Texte der Evangelien in Musik zu setzen, u. zw. besonders die der Passion. Johann Walter hatte bereits zwei Passionen nach den Evangelien von Matthäus und Johannes geschrieben. Es handelt sich um monodische 75

Werke nach dem Prinzip der Rezitationstöne des gregorianischen Chorals. Die Polyphonie wird nur für die Turbae eingesetzt, wobei jedoch dieselben melodischen Prinzipien beibehalten werden. Sie ist einfach nach der Art der Fauxbourdons aufgebaut. Unter dem Titel Die deutsche Passion nach Johannes wurde die Fassung von Joachim a Burck 1568 in Wittenberg gedruckt. Sie ist zweifellos die älteste gänzlich polyphone lutherische Passion. Allen Personen der Erzählung kommt die polyphone Struktur zugute: Dem Evangelisten, Christus, Judas, Kaiphas, Petrus usw.

Das Werk ist in drei Teile gegliedert (Die Gefangennahme, das Urteil des Pilatus, die Kreuzigung). Es wird mit einer polyphonen Vertonung des Titels eingeleitet: „Höret das Leiden unsers Herrn Jesu Christi aus dem Evangelisten Johannes“ und endet mit einem anderen Text: „Wir glauben, lieber Herr, mehre unsern Glauben. Amen.“ Um die verschiedenen Personen der Handlung besser zu erkennen, hat die von Vox Luminis interpretierte Aufnahme für diese Anthologie vorgeschlagen, die Teile zwei Sängergruppen anzuvertrauen, wobei die erste den Evangelisten darstellt, die zweite die „Colloquentes“. Beide Gruppen singen aber die Anfangs- und Schlusschöre sowie die „Turbae“ gemeinsam. Nach diesem Werk setzten viele Komponisten die Tradition fort: Leonard Lechner oder Johannes Herold am Ende der Renaissance, aber auch Christoph Demantius und Antonio Scandello (1517-1580). Letzterer stammte aus Bergamo, wurde 1547 als Instrumentalist an den Dresdner Hof engagiert und trat 1562 zum reformierten Glauben über!

Samuel Scheidt: Da Jesus an dem Kreuze stund Wie der Auferstehungschoral, der auf der ersten CD zu finden ist, stammt dieser Choral der Passionszeit aus dem Görlitzer Tablaturbuch von 1650. Der in diesem Choral ausgedrückte Schmerz wird durch die chromatischen Bewegungen der tiefen Stimmen verstärkt.

Das Dogma Das Dogma bildet den dritten Teil, den Johann Sebastian Bach in der Clavier Übung III behandelt. Die Grundsteine der lutherischen Religion sind: das Gesetz, der Glaube und das 76

Johann Hermann Schein: Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot (v. 1) Martin Luther: Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot (v. 12) Wir kommen hier kurz auf die Sammlung Opella Nova von Samuel Schein mit einer Fassung des ersten Chorals für zwei Stimmen und Basso continuo zurück. Schein vertont davon nur den ersten Vers. Im Geistlichen Gesangbüchlein, das 1524 von Walter veröffentlicht wurde, findet sich der von Luther verfasste deutsche Text aller Choralstrophen. Darin werden die zehn Gebote zitiert. Auf dieses Stück von Schein folgen hier die beiden letzten Verse in einer einfachen „A-Capella“-Fassung, wie sie sicher in vielen Kirchen oder Andachtsstätten zu hören war.

Johann Walter:Wir glauben all an einen Gott Die sechsstimmige Motette Wir glauben all an einen Gott von Johann Walter ist in einem Stil geschrieben, der dem von Josquin Desprez sehr ähnelt. Sie ist rund um die Choralmelodie aufgebaut, die als Cantus firmus in der zweiten Stimme zu hören ist. In der hier aufgenommenen Fassung wird nur die erste Strophe interpretiert. Für die beiden anderen Strophen, Wir glauben auch an Jesum Christ und Wir glauben all an den Heiligen Geist, verwendet Walter dieselbe Musik.

Bathasar Resinarius: Vater unser der du bist im Himmel Für das Vater unser wählten wir eine ziemlich archaische polyphone Fassung von Balthasar Resinarius (um 1486-um 1555), der Sänger an der kaiserlichen Kapelle von Maximilian I. war und unter der Leitung von Heinrich Isaac in Böhmen arbeitete, wo er einer der Hauptverfechter der Reformation war.

Deutsches Requiem Thomas Selle: Die mit Tränen saën Andreas Hammerschmidt: Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen Heinrich Schütz: Selig sind die Toten Es ist bekannt, dass Johannes Brahms, als er sein Deutsches Requiem „nach Worten der heiligen Schrift“ (Op. 45) schrieb, abgesehen von ebendiesen Texten die Kompositionen jener bewundernswerten Polyphoniker des beginnenden 17. Jh. als Modell nahm. Natürlich war es verlockend, sich zu fragen, ob Brahms alte Vertonungen all dieser Texte hatte finden können.

Nach vielen Forschungen für das polyphone Ensemble ohne Instrumenten fanden wir diese drei Motetten von Komponisten, die in der vorliegenden Anthologie bereits vertreten sind: Heinrich Schütz, Andreas Hammerschmidt und Thomas Selle. Die drei Kompositionen von seltener Schönheit beschließen dieses Programm zu Ehren von Martin Luther im Geist der Besinnung.

In memoriam Martin Luther Samuel Scheidt: Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ Wieder ein Choral aus dem Görlitzer Tablaturbuch. Der flehende Text dieses Chorals „Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, ich bitt, erhör mein Klagen; verleih mir Gnad zu dieser Frist, lass mich doch nicht verzagen“ ist eine schöne Einleitung zum letzten Stück dieser Aufnahme.

Caspar Othmayr: Mein himmlischer Vater Genau genommen gehörte Caspar Othmayr (1515-1553) nicht direkt zum Kreis derer, die Luther nahe standen. Man weiß, dass er Johann Walter in Torgau kennengelernt hatte und 1545 der Reformationsbewegung beitrat. Othmayr kann in dieser Anthologie nicht fehlen. Sein Name scheint als Harmonisator vieler Choräle auf, doch schrieb er auch selbst eine musikalische Hommage auf Luther.

Die fünfstimmige Motette „Mein himmlischer Vater“ trägt die Anmerkung „Verba Lutheri ultima“. Dieser Text ist in Form eines Cantus firmus der Stimme des ersten Tenors anvertraut, der die letzten Worte singt, die Luther angeblich auf seinem Totenbett sprach: „In manus tuas, 78

Domine, commendo spiritum meum. Reddemisti me, Deus veritatis“ („In deine Hände, Herr, empfehle ich meinen Geist. Du hast mich erlöst, Gott der Wahrheit.“).
