Mozart’s Requiem is probably one of the most legendary works in the history of western music, having retained its aura of mystery for more than two centuries. Unfinished at the time of the composer’s death, the score was completed at the request of his widow Constanze, mainly by his disciple Franz Xaver Süssmayr, who gave it the form we know today. Fabrizio Cassol needed several years of research to penetrate this labyrinth and its countless secrets. He began by immersing himself in the manuscript, comparing its various hands in order to identify the elements written by Mozart himself. Then he extracted its essential components, constructing a new framework in the spirit of a different kind of ceremony: an interweaving process that in its radical extremes opens up the work to other modes of communal mourning.

Already at the exploratory stage, there were some fundamental questions: how might some sections be replaced by influences from elsewhere? And how to reframe the ritual of the Requiem, so imbued with sadness, in order to incorporate other emotions such as joy, transcended by music and dancing? Confiding his wish to Alain Platel, Fabrizio Cassol immediately sensed Alain’s lively interest, even fascination. It was obvious that both of them had highly personal reasons for embarking on this adventure with unusually intense commitment.

The choice of musicians was the cornerstone of the creative process: uppermost was the wish to build on both the Coup Fatal project (with its Congolese artists) and Brett Bailey’s Macbeth (with its South African vocalists). This ensemble, complemented by other strong musical personalities, quickly assumed the key function of a core group: six singers – three of them lyrical vocalists – with three likembes, accordion, guitar, bass, euphonium and percussion, the whole ensemble superbly conducted by Rodriguez Vangama, occasionally assisted by tenor Owen Metsileng.

The musical preparation was a virtual jigsaw: there were sectional rehearsals with small ensembles in Kinshasa, Cape Town, Cassis and Ghent, then everyone got together for the staging of the show. The basic narrative and formal scheme of the original Requiem was retained: recognizable fragments from it are quoted in all the sections – with the exception of the final Communion. In the original the music of the Kyrie comes back once again, but for the Requiem pour L. it was felt essential to replace that impression of a return to the beginning with an evolution towards a slow, extremely gentle dissolution.

From the beginning of the Agnus Dei, the music gradually slips closer to Mozart’s Mass in C minor, from the fragments of the ‘Qui tollis’ to the sketches for the ‘Miserere nobis’. After its various developments, each part inexorably returns to an incomplete state, as if to the composer’s manuscript draft.

Mozart’s Requiem expresses above all a western idea of the collective, the communal, mainly through its imposing choral passages. In this version, Fabrizio Cassol has underlined the personal relationship with death while maintaining the sense of the collective. Here joy and intense exultation, a shared sense of delight, the power of the ‘groove’, sudden silences and profound incantations, all meet and intermingle with polyphony from many different sources.

Each one of the musicians goes beyond the role of an interpreter, assimilating and reinventing the musical space, the songs and dances. Like a proverbial paradigm of diversity, five contemporary African languages criss-cross each other, intertwined with the ancient Latin text. From within this emotional architecture, invocations to the ancestors ring out, creating a unique journey towards the hereafter, a journey open to the reality of the world today.

Le Requiem de Mozart est probablement l’une des œuvres les plus mythiques de l’histoire de la musique occidentale. Il a entretenu dans son halo un mystère depuis plus de deux siècles. Restée inachevée à la mort du compositeur, la partition a été complétée à la demande de sa veuve Constance, essentiellement par le disciple Franz Xaver Süssmayr, qui lui a donné la forme que nous connaissons aujourd’hui.

Il a fallu à Fabrizio Cassol plusieurs années pour pénétrer ce labyrinthe aux mille secrets. Il a commencé par s’imprégner du manuscrit en comparant les différentes écritures afin de distinguer les éléments provenant directement de Mozart. Ensuite, il en a distillé l’essentiel pour construire une trame nouvelle, dans l’esprit d’une cérémonie différente.

Un travail de tissage qui, dans l’étendue de ses extrêmes, ouvre la voie à d’autres façons de partager le deuil.

Les questions fondamentales se sont posées dès les stades précoces du travail: est-il possible de substituer certaines des parties par des influences venues d’ailleurs ? Comment reconsidérer le rite lié au Requiem, imprégné de tristesse, pour y inclure d’autres émotions, telles que la joie, transcendée par la musique et la danse ?

En exprimant cette volonté à Alain Platel, Fabrizio Cassol a d’emblée perçu chez lui un vif intérêt, voire une fascination. Il était évident que les deux hommes avaient chacun des raisons très personnelles d’entamer cette aventure, d’une intensité hors du commun.

Le choix des musiciens a constitué une étape primordiale de la création. L’envie de prolonger l’expérience de Coup Fatal avec des interprètes congolais et du Macbeth de Brett Bailey avec des chanteurs sud-africains est apparue comme une évidence. Cet ensemble, complété par d’autres personnalités musicales fortes, a rapidement pris la force d’un groupe soudé. Il se constitue de six chanteurs dont trois voix lyriques, trois likembes, accordéon, guitare, basse, euphonium et percussions, le tout sous la direction exceptionnelle de Rodriguez Vangama, parfois secondé par le ténor Owen Metsileng.

La musique s’est élaborée comme un puzzle, au fil de répétitions en petits ensembles à Kinshasa, Cape Town, Cassis et Gand. Tout le monde s’est ensuite retrouvé pour préparer le spectacle dans sa dimension scénographique.

L’essentiel du déroulement narratif et formel du Requiem est conservé. Dans chacune des parties sont cités des fragments reconnaissables, à l’exception de la dernière section, la communion. Dans le contexte de Requiem pour L., il fallait éviter la sensation d’un

recommencement (telle que créée avec le retour au Kyrie dans la version originale), pour évoluer vers une évaporation lente, d’une grande douceur. En partant de l’Agnus Dei, la musique glisse petit à petit vers la Messe en ut mineur de Mozart depuis les fragments du « Qui tollis » vers des ébauches du « Miserere nobis ». Chaque partie, après ses développements, revient inexorablement vers l’inachevé, comme un retour aux premières écritures du compositeur.

Le Requiem de Mozart exprime avant tout la collectivité occidentale, notamment par ses chœurs imposants. Pour cette version, Fabrizio Cassol a privilégié les rapports personnels à la mort tout en conservant l’impact du collectif. La joie, la ferveur jubilatoire, le plaisir partagé, la force du groove, les silences et la profondeur de certaines incantations se rencontrent et laissent s’entrecroiser des polyphonies aux origines multiples.

Chacun des musiciens dépasse le rôle d’interprète, en s’appropriant et en réinventant les espaces, les chants et les danses. Cinq langues africaines modernes se croisent comme des adages métaphoriques et entrelacent le latin ancien. Dans cette architecture émotionnelle se lancent des appels aux ancêtres pour créer un voyage unique vers l’au-delà, ouvert à la réalité du monde d’aujourd’hui.
