Antoine Pierre released his very first Urbex record to the world at the Brussels Jazz Festival in 2016 — and this didn’t go unnoticed. Flagey’s Studio 1 was packed.

The audience went crazy not only for his fresh and carefully crafted pieces but also for the way that this amazingly young upand-coming Belgian band played together: they gave the impression that that they’d been performing together for years.

Antoine had been known principally as a drummer for Philip Catherine until then.

Three years later, Pierre had become the artist-in-residence at the Brussels Jazz Festival, who’d commissioned him to compose new works for two different festival projects.

The first of these was written for an all-star quartet with Joshua Redman on sax, Eric Legnini on piano and Or Bareket on double bass. The concert was a major triumph and expectations for his second project were even higher as a result.

Pierre decided to pay homage to jazz legend Miles Davis — his childhood hero — in his second project, and more specifically to Davis’ iconic album Bitches Brew. Miles Davis had reinvented himself in this album, which had been released exactly fifty years ago and which promptly and irrevocably rewrote jazz history.

Bitches Brew was the result of three days of studio recording in New York, during which the musicians had only seen a few musical sketches with hints on how they should be developed; Davis then gave them a few cryptically encouraging words and told them to improvise on what he’d jotted down.

Bitches Brew was Davis’s successful attempt to “move the music forward”; he opened the way for fusion in which funk and rock elements became part of jazz. Davis expanded his line-up considerably and added electric instruments to his sound world, creating lengthy numbers filled with energetic

rock and psychedelic and electric grooves.

The album remains a turning point in jazz history.

Antoine Pierre’s ambitious tribute to Davis’s trailblazing work was to write music that was clearly inspired by the Bitches Brew sound, but without it becoming a cover version of the original album. This is the result.

Suspended is Antoine Pierre’s third album with Urbex and was recorded live during its premiere at Flagey’s Studio 4 in Brussels on 16 January 2020. The Urbex line-up was expanded for the occasion with Rainier Baas on guitar, Ben Van Gelder on sax and Jozef Dumoulin on keyboard.

The music is electrifying and stimulating and can be compared to a multi-coloured abstract-expressionist painting by Pollock or de Kooning, with an intriguing play of alternating rhythmic patterns in a relentless flow of creative musical energy,

all within a framework of hypnotically circular grooves. It’s music that caresses your skin before getting under it.

Antoine Pierre’s Suspended takes you on a musical journey that began with Bitches Brew in 1970, but above all, it’s an extraordinarily daring and original piece of music that gives unequivocal proof of his genius as a composer.

C’est à l’occasion du Brussels Jazz Festival 2016 qu’Antoine Pierre a présenté au public son tout premier disque avec Urbex. Le studio 1 était comble et le succès au rendez-vous. Le public a réagi avec enthousiasme aux compositions rafraîchissantes et soigneusement construites et au jeu d’ensemble mature de ce jeune groupe belge talentueux. Jusque-là, Antoine était surtout connu pour être le batteur de Philip Catherine.

Trois ans plus tard, à la demande du Brussels Jazz Festival, Antoine Pierre, en tant qu’artiste en résidence, a écrit de la nouvelle musique pour deux projets différents.

Le premier répertoire a été composé pour un quatuor de stars, avec Joshua Redman au saxophone, Eric Legnini au piano et Or Bareket à la contrebasse. Le concert a été un triomphe. Le ton était donné et les attentes pour le deuxième projet élevées.

Avec le deuxième projet, Antoine Pierre a voulu rendre hommage à son héros d’enfance et légende du jazz par excellence, Miles Davis, et plus spécifiquement à son album iconique Bitches Brew, sorti il y a exactement 50 ans et avec lequel Miles Davis s’est réinventé et a définitivement réécrit l’histoire du jazz.

Bitches Brew est le résultat de trois jours d’enregistrement en studio à New York, pour lequel les musiciens n’ont pu découvrir au préalable que quelques courts extraits. Davis leur a demandé d’improviser avec seulement quelques instructions énigmatiques.

Bitches Brew constitue une expérience et une tentative réussie de Davis de « faire avancer la musique ». L’album a ouvert les portes de la fusion ; des éléments funk et rock ont fait leur apparition dans le jazz. Suspended est le troisième album d’Urbex composé par Antoine Pierre ; il a été enregistré en live pendant la première au studio 4 de Flagey le 16 janvier 2020. Pour l’occasion, l’ensemble s’est élargi à Reinier Baas à la guitare, Ben van Gelder au saxophone et Jozef Dumoulin au clavier.

Tijdens het Brussels Jazz Festival in 2016 liet Antoine Pierre zijn allereerste Urbex-plaat op de wereld los en dat ging niet onopgemerkt voorbij. Studio 1 zat afgeladen vol. Het publiek reageerde laaiend enthousiast op de frisse en zorgvuldig uitgewerkte composities en op het mature samenspel van deze jonge, uit aanstormend Belgisch talent bestaande Urbexband. Antoine had zich tot dan toe voornamelijk in de kijker gespeeld als drummer van Philip Catherine.

3 jaar later schrijft Pierre in opdracht van het Brussels Jazz Festival als artiest-in-residentie nieuwe muziek voor twee uiteenlopende projecten.

Het eerste repertoire werd gecomponeerd voor een all-star quartet met Joshua Redman op sax, Eric Legnini op piano en Or Bareket op contrabas. Het concert werd een triomftocht. De toon was gezet, de verwachtingen voor zijn tweede project zijn dan ook hoog gespannen.

Met dit tweede project wil Pierre een hommage brengen aan zijn persoonlijke jeugdheld en jazzlegende bij uitstek, Miles Davis, en meer specifiek aan zijn iconische album Bitches Brew. Exact 50 jaar geleden verscheen dit album waarmee Miles Davis zichzelf heruitvond en de jazzgeschiedenis onherroeppelijk herschreef.

Bitches Brew was het resultaat van 3 dagen studio-opname in New York waarbij de muzikanten slechts enkele kort uitgewerkte muzikale schetsen te zien kregen. Davis vroeg hen hierop te improviseren met enkel een aantal cryptische aanmoedigingen van zijn kant.

Bitches Brew is een experiment en een geslaagde poging van Davis “to move the music forward”. Het album zette de deuren open voor fusion waarbij funk en rockelementen hun intrede in de jazz deden. Davis breidde zijn bezetting fors uit en verrijkte het klankpalet met electrische instrumenten.

Het album was, en is nog steeds, een kantelpunt in de jazzgeschiedenis.

Antoine Pierre wilde een ode brengen aan de vernieuwing die Davis in de jazz injecteerde. Een repertoire schrijven geïnspireerd op de Bitches Brew-sound, zonder dat het een coverversie werd van het album. Dat was het duidelijke maar niet minder ambitieuze opzet.

Het eindresultaat hebt u nu in handen. Suspended is de derde Urbex-plaat gecomponeerd door Antoine Pierre en live opgenomen tijdens de première in Studio 4 van Flagey op 16 januari 2020. Voor deze gelegenheid werd de Urbexbezetting uitgebreid met Reinier Baas op gitaar, Ben van Gelder op sax en Jozef Dumoulin op keyboard.

lock of de Kooning. Binnen het raamwerk van hypnotiserende en circulaire grooves speelt zich een intrigerend spel af van wisselende ritmische patronen in een niet-aflatende stroom van creatieve muzikale energie. Het is muziek die je huid streelt en er dan weer onderkruipt.

Met Suspended neemt Antoine Pierre je mee op een muzikale trip die begon in 1970 met Bitches Brew, maar die bovenal een buitengewoon, gewaagd en origineel stuk muziek is waarbij zijn talent als componist onmiskenbaar komt bovendrijven.
