Claire Bloom, Narrator1,3 Kelley Nassief, Soprano1 Paulo Mestre, Countertenor2,3 The Maryland State Boychoir1 The Washington Chorus1 The São Paulo Symphony Choir2,3 Members of The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra2,3 Baltimore Symphony Orchestra1 Marin Alsop Three examples of Leonard Bernstein’s vocal art can be heard in this recording. His Symphony No. 3 ‘Kaddish’ shuns traditional symphonic ideas in favor of an eclectic theatrical and oratorio-like form with a prominent rôle for speaker. For this recording Marin Alsop has returned to the work’s original narrative text, heard before the 1977 revision. The Lark – heard in a concert version with added narration – derives from Lillian Hellman’s adaptation of L’Alouette on the life of Joan of Arc, and it was this music that Bernstein reworked into his Missa Brevis many years later. Key Features • Marin Alsop conducts the Baltimore Symphony in this recording. She is a Bernstein protégé, and has written fondly and extensively about studying with him. He mentored her when he was conductor of the New York Philharmonic and few conductors today understand his music better. Kaddish is a much misunderstood work but an interesting point to push is that it’s heard (largely – some of the original score is not heard) in its original narrative form. The points to push here are therefore Bernstein the vocal composer performed in largely original editions by one of his best contemporary interpreters. Important also to note that the speaker in Kaddish is the great actress Claire Bloom.

Marin Alsop is an inspiring and powerful voice in the international music scene. She made history with her appointment as the 12th music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO). With her inaugural concerts in September 2007, she became the first woman to head a major American orchestra. Her success as the BSO’s music director has garnered national and international attention for her innovative programming and artistry. Alsop took up the post of principal conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra in 2012, and became music director in July 2013. She also holds the title of conductor emeritus at the Bournemouth Symphony in the United Kingdom, where she served as the principal conductor from 2002 to 2008. In September 2013, she made history as the first female conductor of the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms in London.

Symphonies, Vol. 3
Symphony in F major ‘Urbs Roma’
La jeunesse d’Hercule • Danse macabre* Marika Fältskogh, Violin solo* Malmö Symphony Orchestra Marc Soustrot Saint-Saëns’s Symphony in F major ‘Urbs Roma’ was his prizewinning entry to a competition organized by the Bordeaux Société Ste Cécile, but the work remained unpublished in the composer’s lifetime. This early work is notable for a masterly final movement which, unusually, comprises a theme and variations. The symphonic poem La Jeunesse d’Hercule is a portrayal of the conflict between pleasure and duty, while the Danse macabre is amongst his most popular orchestral works. The first two volumes of this complete edition of Saint-Saëns’s symphonies can be heard on Naxos 8.573138 and 8.573139.

Key Features • This third volume rounds off our new edition of SaintSaëns’s complete Symphonies, the first two volumes of which having received wide critical acclaim. Volume 2 (8.573139) with the famous ‘Organ’ Symphony (No. 3) is equal to the toughest competition, with MusicWeb International “immensely impressed by Soustrot’s reading… played beautifully by the Malmö orchestra. Soustrot creates a sense of expectancy that keeps you on the edge of your seat… excellent orchestral playing throughout.” ClassicsToday.com felt that the “second volume in Naxos’ ongoing Saint-Saëns symphony cycle is as good as the first” (8.573138). With some of the best recordings available of Saint-Saëns’s less frequently performed and recorded symphonies and orchestral works, this is now an assured market leader in a very popular field.

Marc Soustrot is considered a specialist in French orchestral music. Formerly the principal conductor and artistic director of the Orchestre Philharmonique des Pays de la Loire, the Beethoven Orchester, Bonn, and Het Brabants Orkest, Eindhoven, he is principal conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and designated principal conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. Soustrot has conducted the Munich Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra,

Rarely performed but recognized as a hidden masterpiece, Sibelius’s score for Jedermann is unusual in that the music closely follows the words and action of this morality play, intensifying Everyman’s hubris, penance, escape from the Devil’s clutches and ultimate salvation. The Two Serious Melodies reflect Sibelius’ dark mood during the difficult years of World War I, while In memoriam resonates with his preoccupation with death in 1909 following a life-saving throat operation, and was performed at his own funeral in 1957.

Key Features • This is the fourth of a six volume set that explores Jean Sibelius’s orchestral works beyond the higher profile symphonies, violin concerto and tone poems. Finnish conductor Leif Segerstam is an acclaimed Sibelius interpreter, having been awarded the annual Finnish State Prize for Music in 2004; and in 2005 the highly esteemed Sibelius Medal. His recordings for Naxos include a “skillfully and sweepingly paced” Tristan und Isolde (Classic FM on 8.660152-54) and a “deeply moving” Wozzeck (Penguin Guide on 8.660076-77). In this fourth volume, platinum record-making and award winning orchestra the Turku Philharmonic accompanies a world class team of vocal soloists in Pia Pajala, Nicholas Söderlund and Tuomas Katajala, as well as the Cathedralis Aboensis Choir, which has a close association with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. Leif Segerstam is a conductor, composer, violinist and pianist with a prominent international career. Since 2012 he has been Chief Conductor of Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. From autumn 1997 to spring 2013 Leif Segerstam was Professor of Orchestra Conducting at the Sibelius Academy. An opéra-comique in one act (1775)
Claire Debono • Pascale Beaudin, Sopranos Blandine Staskiewicz, Mezzo-soprano Jeffrey Thompson • Antonio Figueroa, Tenors Alex Dobson, Baritone Opera Lafayette • Ryan Brown
The first performances of Les Femmes Vengées (The Avenged Women) in 1775 restored the fortunes of Francois-André Danican Philidor, which had been wavering since the great success of Tom Jones a decade earlier. His opéra-comique, which foreshadows the plot of Mozart’s Così fan tutte (Mozart had been in Paris during the first performances of Philidor’s work), offers delicious opportunities for mock-indignation and repartee in its arias and ensembles. This recording presents the complete music. Opera Lafayette and Ryan Brown’s recording of Philidor’s Sancho Pança [8.660274] was hailed as a ‘witty, authentic interpretation’ by the American Record Guide. Key Features • Is this the French Così fan tutte? No one knows for sure whether or not Mozart was present at the early performances of Philidor’s Les Femmes vengées but it’s a known fact that he was staying in Paris at the time and there are distinct mirror-reflections in his later work of this earlier comic work. All the music is here; though there are cuts in the spoken dialogue (the complete text with spoken dialogue is available on Naxos’ website). This is highclass opéra-comique, essentially light-hearted, in the last quarter of the eighteenth-century. Important to note that Ryan Brown and his ensemble are world-leaders in the performance of Philidor’s music.

Christopher ROUSE (b. 1949) Seeing* Kabir Padavali**
World Première Recordings
Talise Trevigne, Soprano** Orion Weiss, Piano* Albany Symphony David Alan Miller
Winner of a Pulitzer Prize and a GRAMMY® Award, Christopher Rouse is one of America’s most prominent composers of orchestral music, creating a body of work perhaps unequalled in its emotional intensity. Conceived from the start as differing from a traditional piano concerto, Seeing brings together seemingly disparate elements to explore the notion of ‘sanity’ through the music of Robert Schumann and Skip Spence, swinging between extremes of consonance and dissonance, stability and instability, to create a disorientating and hallucinatory work seen through the lens of mental illness. Kabir Padavali or ‘Kabir Songbook’ presents a range of the great Indian poet’s religious concerns, from extraordinarily beautiful ecstasy to impishly humorous allegories.
© Gardy D Gold
Key Features • Christopher Rouse is one of America’s most prominent and highly regarded composers of orchestral music, winning him a Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award, and leading to his election to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Letters. Rouse is not new to Naxos, his Wolf Rounds (8.572439) described by MusicWeb International as “a virtuosic thrill-ride… gripping, convincing, and a David Alan Miller significant addition to the ever-growing literature for wind bands.” With a scintillating recording from this top team of musicians, this release is guaranteed to be one of contemporary music’s leading titles in 2015. The Albany Symphony has received more ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming than any other orchestra in America. Grammy Award winning conductor David Alan Miller is a champion of contemporary music, as is acclaimed vocal soloist Talise Trevigne. Pianist Orion Weiss is familiar to collectors of Naxos recordings with highly successful titles from Scarlatti (8.573222) to Webern (8.557516), and some “truly jazzy” Gershwin (ClassicsToday.com on 8.559790).

Piano Concerto No. 1 'Mediterranean'1 Accordion Concerto2 • Malta Suite
Charlene Farrugia, Piano1 • Franko Božac, Accordion2 Malta Philharmonic Orchestra Miran Vaupotić
© Nikolai Ivanovich Semenov
The three works on this recording come from the first phase in the musical development of Malta’s prolific composer Charles Camilleri, and are some of his most rewarding and enduring works. The Piano Concerto No. 1 ‘Mediterranean’ owes much to the Romantic concerto tradition but is suffused with the distinctive flavours of music from southern Europe and North Africa. A virtuoso of the accordion, Camilleri wrote a Concerto for the instrument that journeys humorously from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. The Malta Suite, a set of colourful dances, is widely considered the island’s musical emblem.

Key Features • Because of his teaching appointments Camilleri is still remembered in the UK, USA and especially Canada. His memory is still vivid in his native island and the Waltz from the Malta Suite recorded in this disc is played every day in one of Valletta’s main squares (Valletta is the Maltese capital). These three works Miran Vaupotić date from his early Nationalist phase where he fused Maltese and Mediterranean folk tunes to ‘art music’ traditions, similar to works by de Falla, Bartók and Vaughan Williams. The music is brilliant and approachable; the Piano Concerto would make a good Prom piece. Companion Titles

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING
Philip Glass’ Fifth String Quartet is the most substantial of his five quartets and the most traditional, using formal structures and expressive contrasts which go far beyond minimalism. While maintaining Glass’ unmistakeable personal style, this is a quartet which delivers both driving energy and an unforgettable, threnodylike tenderness. Glass chose a string quartet for his score to the film Dracula to ‘evoke the feeling of the world of the 19th century’, the music underpinning the film’s visual drama while avoiding obvious ‘horror’ effects. The String Sextet is an arrangement of Glass’s Third Symphony (Naxos 8.559202), combining symphonic scale with the intimacy synonymous with the chamber music genre. The Carducci Quartet’s critically acclaimed recording of Philip Glass’s String Quartets Nos. 1-4 can be heard on Naxos 8.559636.

Key Features • Released in 2010, the Carducci Quartet’s recording of Philip Glass’s String Quartets 1-4 (8.559636) became an instant critical hit, this review from The Strad being typical: “Bringing these works to life requires a multitude of nuances and spotless intonation, and the young British-based Carducci Quartet flawlessly meets the challenge. The intricate web of sound throughout is rhythmically precise and crystal clear, with minute changes of dynamics unfailingly achieved.” This recording has remained a favorite ever since, with ClassicsToday.com acknowledging that “the Carducci Quartet more than holds its own in this repertoire alongside the Kronos and Smith Quartets.” With this recording of the Fifth Quartet the Carducci Quartet completes the cycle, and with the film score to Dracula and the String Sextet this is a substantial program which none of Glass’s legions of fans will be able to resist.

Grażyna BACEWICZ (1909-1969) Complete String Quartets, Vol. 2 String Quartets Nos. 2, 4 and 5 Lutosławski Quartet

© Marek Szczepański
Grażyna Bacewicz is now emerging from the shadow of her Polish contemporaries, such as Panufnik and Lutosławski, on the international stage. She constantly sought ways to develop her style and it is this continuous line of development that is perfectly exemplified in her series of string quartets. String Quartet No. 2 was premiered in 1943 in challenging circumstances but attests to her positive spirit. The prize-winning String Quartet No. 4 is one of her most performed works, perfectly balancing formal complexity, approachable themes and harmonic sophistication. The powerful and intense String Quartet No. 5 is a compositional tour de force. Volume 1 can be heard on Naxos 8.572806.
Lutosławski Quartet
Key Features • Bacewicz had many talents: she was a fine pianist, a professional violinist – in which capacity she recorded a number of LPs – and a composer increasingly recognised. She wrote 7 quartets and each reflect elements of expressionism, neoclassicism, and serialism. Points to press are her emergence after many years of neglect since her death in 1969 – she was overshadowed by Polish contemporaries who lived longer, such as Lutosławski – and inevitably as a female composer often working against the odds. She wrote in a variety of forms but her quartets offer a perfect summation of her musical credo.

Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Variations on Folk Songs Opp. 105 and 107
(Performing version by Patrick Gallois) Patrick Gallois, Flute Maria Prinz, Piano Beethoven’s letters show an extensive and prolonged correspondence with George Thomson, a keen amateur musician who had made it his task to collect and publish settings of folk songs, commissioning the likes of Pleyel, Koželuch and Haydn. The Opp. 105 and 107 collections, written for piano with optional parts for flute or violin, are filled with delightfully decorative but virtuoso writing. This recording offers versions with improvisation and ornamentation by Patrick Gallois based on the performance practice of the early eighteenth century. © Theresia Linke
Key Features • Patrick Gallois is one of our star performers both as a conductor and flautist, and releases associated with his name always do well even in the most competitive areas of the catalog. His duo with pianist Maria Prinz has been acclaimed for their recording of arrangements of Mozart Violin Sonatas (8.573033), with the American Record Guide hearing their performances as "ever beguiling! Balm for whatever in life has brought you down," and the New York Concert Review remarking that “many flutists and fans of flute music will find great pleasure in this new addition to the repertoire.” These Beethoven Variations on Folksongs do not have a high profile when it comes to recordings, and the appearance of these at times astonishingly virtuoso collections on a single disc will be widely welcomed.

Olivier MESSIAEN (1908-1992) Poèmes pour Mi Vocalise-Étude
Chants de Terre et de Ciel Bruun Hyldig Duo The song cycles that Messiaen wrote between 1936 and 1945 perfectly convey the expressive and aesthetic evolution in his life and art over these years. They occupy a strikingly important place in his musical biography, and together form a composing workshop in which his latest innovations could be developed, while also exploring the full range and variety of writing for the voice. Poèmes pour Mi is laid out on the largest scale – a richly composed cycle, intense and at times heroic. Chants de Terre et de Ciel, lighter in tone but still deeply expressive, celebrates the joy and energy of married love and family life. The Bruun Hyldig Duo’s acclaimed recording of Messiaen’s Harawi and Trois Mélodies can be heard on Naxos 8.572189.

Key Features • Messiaen’s writing for piano, organ or large orchestral forces, and his very idiomatic writing for voice tends to be a very overlooked element of his compositions. It is worth noting that almost all the texts are by Messiaen himself. He also once said that anyone wishing to understand his musical language should study these two early song cycles because ‘they are true in sentiment and typical of my manner.’ In some ways they hold the key to his early style.

Johann Sebastian BACH (1685–1750) English Suites Nos. 1-3
Arranged for Two Guitars Montenegrin Guitar Duo
Bach’s keyboard works known as the English Suites offer a series of dance movements which, despite their name, owe more to earlier French and German models. This is the first of two recordings of the complete English Suites arranged for two guitars by the distinguished Montenegrin Guitar Duo. Transcriptions of Bach for solo guitar have been popular since the nineteenth century and the emergence of the guitar duo extends still further the potential for exciting and revelatory performances. Key Features • Goran Krivokapic has won first-prizes at no fewer than 18 international competitions and his duo partner Danijel Cerović is a very experienced performer and teacher. Together their duo, the Montenegrin Guitar Duo, is performing a wide range of music – both historical and contemporary. Important to stress the unique nature of this premiere recording for guitar duo of the Bach English Suites. It’s much more usual to hear a solo transcription but in recent years duo transcriptions have begun to appear – there are already duo transcriptions of Bach’s Goldberg Variations - and this new disc takes transcription forward another gear. The Montenegrin Guitar Duo is frequently invited to prestigious international events for recitals and concerts with orchestras, as well as for master-classes, lectures on transcribing Bachʼs music and adjudicating competitions. Their performances have been highly acclaimed by both audiences and critics for their historically informed performances of J. S. Bachʼs English Suites in a new, fresh approach on two guitars. Their repertoire includes the transcriptions of renaissance and baroque music and original compositions dating from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a special emphasis on contemporary music originally written for two guitars, as well as improvisation. This first of two recordings of Bachʼs English Suites is a world première. Companion Titles

Leo BROUWER (b. 1939) Music for Two Guitars Tríptico • Micro piezas
Música Incidental Campesina Per suonare a due Sonata de Los Viajeros Brasil Guitar Duo With a prolific output ranging from solo guitar pieces to symphonic works, including concertos, chamber music, and many film scores, Leo Brouwer is recognised as one of the world’s most innovative and internationally performed contemporary composers. In this recording his progressive and imaginative contribution to extending the horizons of the guitar duo is fully demonstrated. Subtle allusions to dance styles, virtuosity, and rhythms referencing Cuban folk music are some of the features of these exciting pieces which range from the special sonorities of Per suonare a due to the Sonata de Los Viajeros, an international voyage in four movements.

Guitar Laureate Recital: Eren SÜALP
Winner 2014 Michele Pittaluga Guitar Competition, Alessandria
ERDENER • BROUWER • OCHOA SÜALP • BAYRAKTAR • DODGSON Eren Süalp
The young, prize-winning, international recitalist Eren Süalp has constructed a programme that shows the cosmopolitan nature of contemporary guitar writing, exploring music from his own country, Turkey, as well as from Venezuela, Cuba, and England. It ranges from the witty twists and turns of Turgay Erdener’s Five Grotesques through Bayraktar’s Six Anatolian Pieces – evocative arrangements that occasionally summon up the sound of Turkish plucked instruments – to Leo Brouwer’s powerful Sonata of 1990. Stephen Dodgson’s Partita No. 1 is startlingly original and brings a unique sound-world to the guitar.
8.573487
Playing Time: 66:45 7
Key Features • The young soloist Eren Süalp has won numerous prizes including the distinguished second prize at the 2011 Segovia International Competition in Lamares, Spain and in September 2014 won first prize at the Michele Pittaluga competition in Alessandria, Italy. He performs internationally. The recital reflects his Turkish background but also the transcending of national boundaries in contemporary guitar composition. He has brought varied cultures together and also includes a composition of his own, an impressionistic piece called Raindrops. Companion Titles

Joaquín TURINA (1882–1949) Piano Music, Vol. 11
Verbena madrileña • En la zapatería
Jordi Masó
Linterna mágica • El circo • Radio Madrid Jordi Masó, Piano
Companion Titles
Joaquín Turina loved to paint musical pictures of his immediate surroundings, and this 11th volume in Jordi Masó’s complete edition of Turina’s piano works features music inspired by various aspects of everyday life. Verbena madrileña is a brightly coloured portrait of a feast-day in Madrid, while En la zapatería describes the shoemaker’s tasks in vignettes ranging from Wagnerian drama to balletic pirouettes. Also included are the cinema-inspired Linterna mágica and the Radio Madrid suite with its ‘broadcasts’ from different places in Spain, each miniature a brief flash of inspiration from deep within Turina’s fertile, creative spirit. Key Features • Our edition of Joaquín Turina’s piano music played by Jordi Masó has received wide acclaim over its previous volumes, with volume 10 (8.573183) seeing the Gramophone magazine admiring how “…Masó, admirably recorded, takes everything in his stride, responding effortlessly to every virtuoso and entrenched national challenge.” ClassicsToday.com summed up the values of this collection in their review of volume 6 (8.572141): “Jordi Masó has done excellent work in this ongoing series, and he’s in excellent form here. He makes everything sound natural, rhythmically pointed, and builds the climaxes without banging. Turina was, notoriously, a gentle soul who liked his music played with elegance, and Masó does just that, but without forgetting the muscle lying beneath the surface. Excellent sonics complete this wholly winning package.” Jordi Masó studied at the Granollers Conservatory with Josep M. Roger, at the Barcelona School of Music with the pianist Albert Attenelle, and at the Royal Academy of Music of London with Christopher Elton and Nelly Akopian. He has won first prizes in many National and International competitions in Spain and has performed extensively in most European countries in piano recitals and in chamber music concerts. Jordi Masó´s wide repertoire, covering all periods and styles, with special emphasis on music of the twentieth century, has brought first performances of many piano works written for him by the foremost Spanish composers. He has recorded over forty discs, acclaimed by the most important publications. He is piano professor at the Granollers Conservatory and at the Esmuc (High Music School of Catalonia), and a 2008 ARAM (Associate of the Royal Academy of Music) award recipient.

Stephen Michael GRYC (b. 1949) Susan BOTTI (b. 1962) Jess Langston TURNER (b. 1983)
Concerto for Winds and Percussion Terra Cruda Rumpelstilzchen
The contemporary wind ensemble has expanded and redefined its identity, now offering composers as broad a canvas as that of a virtuoso symphony orchestra. Each work heard on this recording reflects this new image of the wind ensemble, none more so than Stephen Michael Gryc’s Concerto for Winds and Percussion, which demonstrates The Hartt School Wind Ensemble’s brilliant technique and wide range of expression. Susan Botti’s Terra Cruda explores the innate behavior and repercussions of aggression, while Jess Turner’s Rumpelstilzchen depicts different parts of the famous fairy story, from the sorrow of the maiden to the creepy little gnome’s fury after his plot has been foiled.

The Hartt Wind Ensemble represents the state of the art when it comes to boundary-stretching symphonic ambition and with the ever-energetic wind ensemble world always hungry for new music these releases are always eagerly snapped up by musicians and fans worldwide. Blown Away: Music for Wind Ensemble Segment Catalogue Wind band, concert band, wind ensemble, symphonic band – whatever the nomenclature, the glorious sound of massed woodwind, brass and percussion instruments today lies at the heart of educational and military music departments. The wind band concept took root more than three centuries ago and has been evolving ever since: following the French Revolution in 1789, the establishment of the Paris National Guard band gave considerable impetus to the development of the ensemble into its modern form; a century later, John Philip Sousa's renowned American band toured the US and Europe, spreading the ensemble's popularity; the first half of the 20th century saw established English classical composers such as Vaughan Williams and Holst championing its cause; and contemporary composers worldwide continue to provide the genre's catalogue with a modernistic edge. The sheer variety and vitality that's on offer in the Naxos Wind Band Classics and American Classics series that fill this catalogue are sure to delight listeners of all ages! Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Idil Biret Concerto Edition, Vol. 6 Piano Concertos Nos. 13 and 17 Idil Biret London Mozart Players Patrick Gallois
“The music critics of the Parisian press dedicated glowing articles last week to the 11 years’ old Turkish pianist Idil Biret. Mlle Idil Biret scored a triumphant success in performing Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos in E flat, K. 365 with the great master of the piano Wilhelm Kempff, conducted by Joseph Keilberth.” LA REPUBLIQUE – France, 18 February 1953 “Miss Biret was soloist in an entrancing performance of Mozart’s E flat Concerto No. 22, K. 482 with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Mlle Nadia Boulanger. The variety of her playing, its finely-shaded gradations and brilliant but never mechanical figurations, revealed her as already a remarkable artist. Not for many years has a Hallé (Manchester) audience heard such perfectly balanced Mozart playing… No words can describe the wondrous finale, with its mixture of gaiety and anguish. This was a performance in which every note counted for its full value.” DAILY TELEGRAPH – UK 1963

“The soloist, at the SSO concert in the Sydney Opera House performing the K. 466 Mozart piano concerto, was Idil Biret, the Turkish pianist making her first Australian tour, and her playing was eminently musical, stylishly phrased, totally free of mannerisms or effects imposed from outside, firm yet emotionally attuned to a work with a deep vein of sadness.” Fred Blanks, THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD – Australia 1980 Companion Titles

Two pieces for violin and piano • Two piano pieces Arturo Cardelús, Piano Berlin Philharmonic Soloists Laurentius Dinca • Maureen Choi • Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, Violins Michael Kaufman • Sami Myerson • Timothy Loo, Cellos John Torcello, Accordion • Steve Dress, Double Bass The music of award-winning composer and pianist Arturo Cardelús is widely acclaimed and performed all over the world. He is cementing a strong reputation as a film music composer, and the 100 Miles Suite evokes a passion for train travel shared by the characters in Tamas Tatai’s film of the same name. His chamber oeuvre expresses deeply personal responses to love and loss with music that is at turns tender, melancholic and lyrical, while the impressive Con Aire de Tango unites the flair of Piazzolla with the technical ingenuity of Vivaldi.

Turkish Music for Cello and Piano
SAYGUN • MANAV • UÇARSU • USMANBAŞ CelloPianoDuo
This disc explores the ways in which Turkish composers have sought to reconcile their own traditions with Western musical heritage. Saygun’s Cello Sonata is representative of his first creative period, blending Anatolian and Western idioms, while İlhan Usmanbaş’ ceaseless aspiration for newer expression via freedom of form has won him international renown. More recently, Özkan Manav has explored folk music using techniques derived from the bağlama, a long-necked lute, and Hasan Uçarsu’s arrangement of an Anatolian folk song uses innovative compositional techniques to represent the sounds, geography and culture of his homeland. © Meltem Işık
Key Features • Focusing on Turkish music for cello and piano, this disc ranges over the generations of Turkish composers in the twentieth-century and beyond. Saygun comes from the first generation – and he taught all three of the other composers here – whilst Usmanbaş comes from the second generation. The other two composers were born between 1965-67 and therefore come from a later tradition. The line here is the accommodation of folkloric/Anatolian source material to Western traditions and structures. In Saygun’s case you can cite Bartók as a general influence – as he and Saygun carried out research on Turkish folk music. Authenticity is a big issue for Uçarsu who asks his performers to sing the line of a song in his piece.

Naxos Audiobooks In a Glass Darkly
By Sheridan Le Fanu Unabridged Read by Nicholas Boulton, David Horovitch and cast
9 781843 799191
Demons, vengeful spirits, insanity, premature burials and lesbian vampires, In a Glass Darkly contains five diabolical tales of horror and mystery that will get the heart racing. Each story, including the famous Green Tea and Carmilla, is presented as a case from the posthumous papers of Dr Martin Hesselius, a metaphysical physician who has no doubt as to the existence of supernatural phenomena − unlike our anxious protagonists... These traditional, yet unfamiliar tales were revered upon release, with Bram Stoker writing his own vampire story some twenty years later, and Henry James once suggesting that this is 'the ideal reading... for the hours after midnight'. The Shadow Over Innsmouth and The Whisperer in Darkness By H.P. Lovecraft Unabridged Read by William Roberts
9 781843 798774
The Shadow Over Innsmouth and The Whisperer in Darkness are counted amongst H.P. Lovecraft's most popular stories. In the first we are transported to the decrepit coastal town of Innsmouth, whose amphibian-like citizens betray a dark and sinister secret. The second takes us to Vermont, where a university professor becomes embroiled in a mind-bending, celestial mystery after strange things are seen floating in the rivers. Dark, brooding and suspenseful, this is Lovecraft at his very best. Companion Titles

Discourse on the Origin and the Foundations of Inequality Among Men By Jean-Jacques Rousseau Unabridged Read by Neville Jason
9 781843 799047
Rousseau's Discourse sets out to explore the origin of inequality among people, a journey that sees him trace the evolution of humans from the savage man to the foundations of civil society. With verve and passion, the philosopher argues that the birth of private property was the 'beginning of evil'. Throughout the book we are led to consider the development of language, reason, self-preservation, benevolence, pity and law − all through the lens of perhaps the most original thinker of the eighteenth century.
