Scythian Suite • Autumn – Symphonic Sketch

Marin Alsop is an inspiring and powerful voice on the international music scene, a music director of vision and distinction who passionately believes that music has the power to change lives. Alsop took up the post of principal conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra in 2012 and became music director in July 2013. She continues to steer the orchestra in its artistic and creative programming, recording ventures and in its education and outreach activities. Alsop led the orchestra on a European tour in 2012, with acclaimed performances at the BBC Proms in London and at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Born in New York City, Marin Alsop attended Yale University and received her master’s degree from The Juilliard School. Her conducting career was launched when, in 1989, she was a prizewinner at the Leopold Stokowski International Conducting Competition and in the same year was the first woman to be awarded the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize from the Tanglewood Music Center, where she was a pupil of Leonard Bernstein.

Symphony No. 3

São Paulo Symphony Orchestra Marin Alsop

This fourth volume in Marin Alsop’s acclaimed Prokofiev symphonic cycle features two of his most viscerally exciting works. Using material salvaged from his opera The Fiery Angel, the Third Symphony was hailed by Serge Koussevitzky at its 1929 première as ‘the best symphony since Tchaikovsky’s Sixth’. Originally commissioned as a ballet by Sergey Dyagilev but rejected as un-danceable, the Scythian Suite has become a popular orchestral showpiece, while Prokofiev retained a lifelong fondness for his dark-hued early symphonic sketch Autumn.

Key Features • Judging by the response to the previous volumes of this fruitful partnership with Marin Alsop and the excellent São Paulo Symphony Orchestra this new release will have no problems in becoming a market leader. The First and Second Symphonies disc (8.573353) was an Allmusic.com ‘Editor’s Choice’ for its “firstrate performance”, and the Fifth Symphony was described as “an outstanding achievement” by BBC Music Magazine, which also regarded the Fourth Symphony (8.573186) as “compelling”. The Bluray releases have also been widely acclaimed, with NBD0031 made Audiophile Audition ‘Best Disc of the Year’ in 2012, and prompting BBC Music Magazine to write, “this exceptional account of Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony is partnered by a revelatory performance of The Year 1941, while the recording bursts out of the speakers.”

8.573353 l 747313335374 “Here, [Marin Alsop] has managed to raise my opinion of a symphony (No 2) that I tended to find as problematic as Prokofiev and the Parisians did. Iron and steel are in no short supply; what makes Alsop and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra reach new heights is the warmth and detail that they bring to the music. There’s a beating heart underlying the motoric rhythms, and vulnerable flesh directly beneath the music’s cold, hard shell.” – International Record Review

“What is most compelling on this Blu-ray audio disc…is Alsop’s Prokofiev Second Symphony… [she] unleashes all the power and energy you could want, and her interpretations of the slower variations are brilliant…one has to declare her Prokofiev Second simply the best version on record. …the sound reproduction is excellent, perhaps the best in this series so far, and the São Paulo Symphony plays at world class level throughout. In sum, this is an indispensable disc for the Prokofiev enthusiast and a highly attractive recording for most listeners with an interest in early 20th century orchestral music. Antoni Wit

Krzysztof PENDERECKI (b. 1933)

Antoni Wit studied conducting with Henryk Czyz at the Academy of Music in Kraków, continuing his musical studies with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Immediately after completing his studies he was engaged as an assistant at the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra by Witold Rowicki. From 2002 to 2013 Antoni Wit was the managing and artistic director of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. He has made over 200 records, and in 2012 he received a GRAMMY® Award for Penderecki’s Fonogrammi, Horn Concerto and Partita (8.572482), and six other nominations for Penderecki’s St Luke Passion in 2004 (8.557149), A Polish Requiem in 2005 (8.557386–87), Seven Gates of Jerusalem in 2007 (8.557766), Utrenjain 2009 (8.572031) and Karol Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater in 2008 (8.570724) and Symphonies Nos. 1 and 4 in 2009 (8.570722). Antoni Wit is professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.

Magnificat Kadisz

Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir Antoni Wit The two works on this recording are separated by 35 years, during which time Penderecki made a decisive break with the post-war European avant-garde. In the Magnificat, chilling instrumental clusters, spectral sounds and impassioned rhetoric unite with tonality and counterpoint to deliver a work of monumental emotional power. Written to mark the 65th anniversary of the end of the Jewish ghetto in Łódź, Kadisz is among the most distinctive of Penderecki’s later choral works in the stark contrasts between drama and sombre reflection of its individual sections.

Key Features • Our magnificent catalogue of new recordings by Krzysztof Penderecki conducted by Antoni Wit guarantees massive interest in every new release, his versions of the symphonies (box set 8.505231) considered “the standard by which all others will be judged” by ClassicsToday.com. We have had success programming Penderecki’s earlier avant-garde ‘classics’ with his more romantic later works, such as the Credo and Cantata (8.572032) given ‘top recommendation’ status by ClassicsToday.com. The central placement of the tremendous Magnificat makes it an essential part of Penderecki’s oeuvre, our potent new performance easily able to replace the only complete alternative on CD, the EMI analogue recording by Polish Radio from 1972.

The Rhyme of Taigu • The Enlightened

Zhou LONG (b. 1953) and Chen YI (b. 1953) Symphony ‘Humen 1839’ New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Darrell Ang

Widely regarded as one of China’s leading composers, Pulitzer Prizewinning Zhou Long writes music which is consistently compelling. The Rhyme of Taigu revives the spirit of Chinese court music from the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD), drawing on traditional percussion instruments. Symphony ‘Humen 1839’, co-composed with Chen Yi, vividly commemorates the public burning of over 1000 tonnes of opium, an event that was to lead to the First Opium War between Great Britain and China. Key Features • The unique selling point about this disc is that it contains the first recordings of a man considered China’s leading contemporary classical composer, Zhou Long. A Pulitzer Prize-winner, he has lived in America for many years, teaching and composing widely. His music has been performed by orchestras worldwide – The Immortal (not on this disc) was played by the BBC Symphony at the Royal Albert Hall in London and The Enlightened was commissioned and first performed by the Kansas City Symphony. Zhou employs Chinese idioms vividly, not least percussion, and blends them with Western harmonies to create a very personal sound world.

Darrell Ang’s triumph at the 50th Besancon International Young Conductor’s Competition, where he took all three top awards—Grand Prize, Audience Prize and Orchestra Prize—launched his international career leading to the music directorship of the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne and numerous guest conducting engagements. In his native Singapore he became the youngest associate conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and served as the music director of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra. Darrell Ang’s uncommon gift was discovered at the age of four when he began to play the violin and piano. His training as a conductor was in St Petersburg followed by study at Yale.

Gioachino ROSSINI (1792–1868) La gazza ladra

The result is an ideal hybrid: a tragic opera with a happy ending that rises to the status of true opera seria. With its outstanding dramatic and musical qualities it remains one of Rossini’s greatest and most successful operas, a constant presence in the repertoire since its triumphant 1817 première in Milan. This performance is conducted by Alberto Zedda, who made his conducting début in 1956, produced the fi rst critical edition of La gazza ladra, and is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s foremost authorities on the operas of Rossini. Key Features • Though La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) is famous for its overture, the whole opera is rather surprisingly not currently represented on many recordings. The unique selling point of our release is the vastly experienced conductor Alberto Zedda, who made his debut in 1956, and who has worked extensively in Berlin, New York and London. Vitally he produced the first critical editions of many Rossini operas, including this one.

Alberto Zedda

Alberto Zedda has produced critical editions of operas, oratorios and cantatas, with particular attention to Rossini and music of the first half of the nineteenth century. He has served as director of Italian repertory at The New York City Opera and has been a member of the Editorial Committee of the Rossini Foundation since its establishment. He is currently director of the Pesaro Rossini Opera Festival and Honorary President of the German Rossini Society. He is probably the most experienced expert on and conductor of Rossini of our time. At his early début with the New York Philharmonic he came across some unplayable passages in the published edition of the Overture to Il bariere di Siviglia, thus unearthing the carelessness of tradition. In the 1960s he revised the score from the autograph, thus marking the beginning of modern, philologically exact Rossini scholarship and the now legendary Rossini revival.

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING

Joan Tower creates music which is bold, colorful and communicative, her list of commissions and awards providing ample evidence of her ability to engage performers and audiences alike. Emotional intensity characterizes Stroke, which vividly conveys a stroke victim’s dramatic turmoil while also offering a vision of hope. The Violin Concerto, selected for the final round of the Pulitzer Prize in Music, is both a virtuoso showcase and a lyrical vehicle for the soloist, its conversational cadenzas representing a poignant exchange between the living and the departed. The deceptively titled Chamber Dance alternates huge blocks of sound with intimate solos and duets in an ever-evolving riot of colors. Joan Tower’s Made in America (8.559328) won three GRAMMY® awards. Key Features • This release joins some earlier successes on the Naxos label, the most significant of which being the triple GRAMMY® award winning Made in America (8.559328), admired by ClassicsToday.com for its “first-rate engineering [which] mirrors the music’s excitement and immediacy. Enthusiastically recommended!” Another strong album contains her Chamber and Solo Music (8.559215) with contributions from the Tokyo String Quartet and pianist Ursula Oppens. Internationally acclaimed violin soloist Cho-Liang Lin has a distinguished discography as a recording artist, including the “bracing energy” (Gramophone) of our Vivaldi Four Seasons (8.557920 and Blu-ray NBD0016), and this program of orchestral works.

Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra Amaury du Closel †

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING

Five vividly contrasting works, four of them in world première recordings, make up this latest issue in the Naxos series of orchestral music by the Italian composer Gian Francesco Malipiero. Visions of heroism and death form the cornerstone of the release, in the Ditirambo tragico (Tragic Dithyramb) composed during the First World War, and in Malipiero’s two earliest surviving pieces, Dai sepolcri (From ‘Tombs’) and the Sinfonia degli eroi (Symphony of Heroes). They are heard alongside the deceptively relaxed charm of Armenia, based on traditional Armenian melodies, and the varied, pungently Stravinskian moods of the aptly titled Grottesco (Grotesque).

Overture and Intermezzo from ‘Mandragola’ Mazaryk’s Peace March

New Russia State Symphony Orchestra Alexander Walker

© Erik Berg

Ignatz Waghalter rose from an impoverished childhood in Poland to become conductor at the newly founded Deutsches Opernhaus in Berlin in 1912. Here, the first performance of his youthful comic opera Mandragola, attended by luminaries such as Richard Strauss, Busoni, and Humperdinck, won him huge acclaim: the Overture and Intermezzo reveal his orchestral mastery. With the rise of Nazism Waghalter left Europe for America where he strongly identified with the Afro-American cause, and began work on the New World Suite, ten short movements of rich melodic imagination that illustrate his constant desire to write approachable and lively music. Volume 1 in this series [8.572809] was an ICMA (International Classical Music Awards) nominee.

Key Features • Fanfare praised Volume 1 of this series as being ‘a recording that belongs in every collection’. Waghlater was a Polishborn composer who rose to fame in Berlin, where his life was later to be blighted by the rise of the Nazis. His music remains little-known and performed but is lyrical and very approachable. This disc charts Alexander Walker his course from Berlin to New York, where he went in 1937, and became identified with trying to establish an Afro-American orchestra. Companion Title

The music of the Strauss family is justifiably famous, but many other talented composers were producing popular music of comparable quality in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Drawn from a unique collection of original archive material compiled by The Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain, much of which has been reconstructed or orchestrated by John Georgiadis, this first volume of two presents world première recordings of works by many undeservedly forgotten central European light music composers.

Key Features • Our vast, complete Johann Strauss II Edition and numerous titles dedicated to the Strauss family on the Marco Polo label stand as uniquely monumental and significant resources, keeping alive a musical era of joyous entertainment and the glamour of the ballroom. Compiled by The Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain to celebrate their 50th Anniversary, the sheer wealth of this album’s stylishness and novelty will prove irresistible to the many fans of this era. The many reconstructions and new orchestrations made by conductor John Georgiadis lend a pioneering feel to this release, which will be followed by an equally collectable second volume in July 2015.

John Georgiadis started playing the violin at the age of six, which led to a career as a professional violinist culminating in his being appointed leader, first with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and then the London Symphony Orchestra at the age of 26. He held the latter position for fourteen years. He was a founder member of the London Virtuosi Chamber Ensemble and Orchestra and also played as first violin in the celebrated Gabrieli String Quartet. His interest in conducting began in the mid-1970s, and he studied orchestration for eight years under the legendary conductor and teacher Sergiu Celibidache. Throughout his conducting career he has made a speciality of Viennese music and has recorded Strauss family music in particular with top British orchestras, and also worldwide, including for Naxos. Frottole

Popular Songs of Renaissance Italy Ring Around Quartet & Consort

Set to vernacular texts dealing mainly with the theme of love, frottole were short, improvisatory polyphonic songs with instrumental accompaniment that flourished in the Renaissance courts of Italy for some forty years between c. 1480 and 1520. Despite its apparent simplicity, this completely new genre of song inspired some of Europe’s greatest vocal and instrumental musicians. The recent invention of movable type added further to its popularity. This recording explores a representative selection, including work published by the historically pivotal figure of Ottaviano Petrucci.

8.573320

Playing Time: 60:06 7

47313 33207 6

Key Features • This disc offers a representative selection of Frottola, improvisatory and chordal songs that set quite straightforward texts that generally dealt with the theme of love, and were written in the Italian vernacular (rather than Latin). While late fifteenth-century Italian art music was strongly influenced by the work of Franco-Flemish composers, the frottola established itself as a purely home-grown genre. There are both vocal and instrumental items in this disc, performed on historical instruments and recorded in Genova in Italy. The group Ring Around is a vocal ensemble with an instrumental consort and is a visually very exciting ensemble. They have performed widely in Italy and have performed at La Fenice in Venice, the city that was one of the great publishing hot houses of the Frottola. Companion Title

Florent Schmitt was one of the most original French composers of his generation, and his chamber music shows him at his most personal. The Quatre Pièces, Op. 25 are evocatively lyrical while the Scherzo vif brims with intricate but fiery virtuosity. The Sonate libre, Op. 68 remains one of his most admired works, a bold diptych with lyric rhapsody at its core but one that also evokes the tragedies of the First World War. The late masterpiece Habeyssé, Op. 110 reveals the explosive power and subtle poetry of Schmitt’s imagination.

Although orchestral music and operettas such as Tom Jones (Naxos 8.660270-71) were Edward German’s main focus as composer, he wrote a dozen or so works specifically for violin and piano, most of them during his time at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was recognised as a gifted violinist, and the years immediately following. Many of these pieces were written for his own use, including his earliest known compositions. From the beguiling charm of salon pieces such as the Chanson d’Amour to the haunting Souvenir, these works are exquisitely crafted miniatures, several of which have remained unheard for over a century. Playing Time: 63:22 © Fiona Johnson

8.573407

Key Features • Edward German is not a name which has not appeared frequently in the catalogues of late, but this programme of largely première recordings of his little-known music for violin forms part of a wave of renewed appreciation for British music in the Romantic tradition. We have championed German’s music considerably in the past via the Marco Polo label, our ‘Best of British Light Music’ series, Andrew Long Ian Buckle and more recently a première complete recording of the operetta Tom Jones (8.660270-71). This was a MusicWeb International ‘Recording of the Year’, and Gramophone wrote that “this Naxos release admirably makes the point that there was a great deal more to pre-World War I British musical theatre than just Gilbert & Sullivan.”

Members of the Curtis Institute of Music Members of the Philadelphia Orchestra • Ciompi Quartet Chiayu’s evocative music reflects her origins in Taiwan and responses to life in the West, an environment in which her career has been burgeoning with a remarkable number of commissions and awards. Zhi explores counterpoint and Taiwanese rhythmic patterns, the title meaning “to weave or to interlace”, while Huan conjures up sounds from nature. Employing virtuoso non-traditional techniques, the Twelve Signs of the Chinese zodiac portrays a complete cycle of character traits, while Journey to the West depicts an allegorical adventure towards enlightenment. The brilliance of Sparkle was inspired by fireworks and includes special brass-instrument effects, while Urban Sketches takes us on a walk through New York City, with electronic sounds interwoven seamlessly with those of the musicians.

Playing Time: 76:17 © Les Todd

8.559713

Key Features • The name Chiayu will be unfamiliar to many, but she is a rising star of contemporary music having already received numerous awards and honors. She is currently in post as an assistant professor of composition at UW-Eau Claire. Journey to the West was winner of the 2013 IAWM Search for New Music and was featured in the fall 2013 issue of the IAWM journal. The combination of Chinese musical elements, western techniques and a vivacious response to a variety of narrative themes and experiences is proving irresistible to her ever-increasing audience. Writing on a performance of Zhi the London Telegraph reviewer concluded, “I reckon she's the one to watch."

Franz LISZT (1811–1886) Complete Piano Music, Vol. 39

Transcriptions of Works by Johann Sebastian Bach Suzanne Husson, Piano

Key Features • This is volume 39 of the complete solo piano music of Liszt. Between 1842 and 1850 he arranged the Six Preludes and Fugues BWV543548 originally written for organ. He made minimal amendments but the fugues made exceptionally virtuosic demands on the performer. In the case of the Fantasie and Fugue in G minor, BWV542 Suzanne Husson he employed considerably more elaboration. Bach had previously worked in Weimar so it could be said that Liszt was paying homage to his eminent predecessor. Liszt was also active in the reclamation and performance of Bach’s music. This volume is played by Suzanne Husson, who recorded the music of Manuel Martínez-Sobral on Marco Polo [8.225014 and 8.225188] of whom the American Record Guide wrote; her ‘transparent, polished pianism is perfect. An ideal interpreter.’ Companion Titles

Johann Sebastian BACH (1685–1750) Works for Harpsichord Aapo Häkkinen, Harpsichord

© Ville Paul Paasimaa

J. S. Bach was one of the most renowned keyboardists of his day, and he left a rich legacy of music for harpsichord originally intended for instruction and ‘spiritual refreshment’. This recording of mostly lesser-known works includes several early examples which afford fascinating insights into the young composer’s experimentation with counterpoint, harmony and form. They are all compelling, emotionally powerful works in their own right, with virtuoso content and an expressive range that easily matches that of Bach’s more famous keyboard pieces.

8.573087

Playing Time: 78:54 7

Key Features • This is Aapo Häkkinen’s solo debut for Naxos though he has appeared in several of our highly successful chamber music recordings, including “impressive accounts” (Penguin Classical Guide) of the J.S. Bach Viola da Gamba sonatas (8.570210), as well as conducting the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra “stylishly and with plenty of expressive force” (ClassicsToday.com on vol. 2 of the symphonies of F.X. Richter, 8.570597). Häkkinen highlights intricate and virtuoso masterpieces by Bach which are more commonly hidden within ambitious and expensive box sets, providing a service which will be widely appreciated. Naxos Audiobooks The Aeneid

By Virgil Unabridged Read by David Collins

9 781843 798866

The masterpiece of Rome’s greatest poet, Virgil’s Aeneid has inspired generations of readers and holds a central place in Western literature. The epic tells the story of a group of refugees from the ruined city of Troy, whose attempts to reach a promised land in the West are continually frustrated by the hostile goddess Juno. Finally reaching Italy, their leader Aeneas is forced to fight a bitter war against the natives to establish the foundations from which Rome is destined to rise. This magnificent poem, in the modern translation by Cecil Day Lewis, is superbly read by David Collins. Companion Titles

Les Misérables

By Victor Hugo Unabridged Read by Bill Homewood

9 781843 798965

Les Misérables is set in Paris after the French Revolution. In the sewers and backstreets we encounter ‘the wolf-like tread of crime’, and assassination for a few sous is all in a day’s work. We weep with the unlucky and heart-broken Fantine, and we exult with the heroic revolutionaries of the barricades; but above all we thrill to the steadfast courage and nobility of soul of ex-convict Jean Valjean, always in danger from the relentless pursuit of the diabolical Inspector Javert. The Diary of Samuel Pepys, Volume III: 1667−1669

By Samuel Pepys Unabridged Read by Leighton Pugh, with David Timson

9 781843 798439

The Diary of Samuel Pepys is one of the most entertaining documents in English history. Written between 1660 and 1669, as Pepys was establishing himself as a key administrator in the Navy Office, it is an intimate portrait of life in 17th-century England, covering his professional and personal activities, including, famously, his love of music, theatre, food, wine and his peccadilloes. This Naxos AudioBooks production is the world-premiere recording of the diary in its entirety. It has been divided into three volumes. Volume III presents the last three years of Pepys’s diary. By now he was in his midthirties and confident in his ability to deal with differing political factions within the Navy Office; his affection for his wife Elizabeth grows ever stronger despite wandering eyes, and he finds he is worth £6,000 and more − a considerable sum for the son of a tailor, who started with nothing. His concerns with his eyes grow, and it is with some regret that he stops writing his diary at the end of May 1669. NA0176 29 CD set
