Fritz KREISLER (1875–1962) Kraggerud Plays Kreisler
Henning Kraggerud
Henning Kraggerud plays works by Fritz Kreisler Works arr. by Nils Thore Røsth Henning Kraggerud, Violin Oslo Camerata
Norwegian Henning Kraggerud, who began playing the violin at the age of seven, later studied with Camilla Wicks and Emanuel Hurwitz, thus tapping into American and mid-European traditions of playing. He has, however, always maintained strong connections with his native land. A recipient of the prestigious Grieg Prize, he appears frequently at Norway’s major festivals playing both violin and viola. Kraggerud, who is greatly inspired by Ysaÿe’s compositions, hailing him as possibly the greatest violinist-composer, is also active as a composer himself (producing several cadenzas as well as original works) and is a keen exponent of new music. Directing and conducting activities have seen him work with the Zürich Chamber Orchestra and at the City of London Festival with the Britten Sinfonia. He is currently professor at the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo.
Playing on Fritz Kreisler’s own ‘Bergonzi’ violin (from c. 1740), the brilliant young violinist Henning Kraggerud presents a programme of Kreisler’s compositions for violin. Filmed in the intimate surroundings of Oslo’s historic ‘Old Lodge’, this is a world premiere recording of many of these arrangements for violin and orchestra. Kraggerud introduces the works himself, and leads the Oslo Camerata in a sparkling, thrilling concert. Supplementary Promotional Materials Video trailer Key release kit Artist profile

Heitor VILLA-LOBOS (1887–1959) Symphony No. 10 ‘Ameríndia’ Leonardo Neiva, Baritone • Saulo Javan, Bass São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and Choir Naomi Munakata, Chorus-master Isaac Karabtchevsky
© Bruno Veiga
Heitor Villa-Lobos was instrumental in developing a national Brazilian musical culture, writing in a wide variety of forms. Composed in 1954 for the 400th anniversary of the founding of São Paulo, Ameríndia is the composer’s largest symphony. Effectively a hybrid symphony and oratorio for soloists, chorus and orchestra, it is memorable for its stylistic variety and breadth, drawing on many different sources of Brazilian music. This recording is based on a newly revised edition made by Editora Criadores do Brasil (the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra’s publishing house) in collaboration with the Academia Brasileira de Música.
Isaac Karabtchevsky
Born in Brazil in 1934, Isaac Karabtchevsky studied conducting and composition in Germany under Wolfgang Fortner, Pierre Boulez, and Carl Ueter. Between 1969 and 1994 he directed the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra (OSB). In 2011 he became director of the Heliopolis Symphony, an orchestra composed of young musicians, most of them from disadvantaged communities in São Paulo, with whom he has developed educational and social projects. Between 1995 and 2001 he was music director of La Fenice in Venice, where he directed major opera productions, including Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle, The Flying Dutchman, and Don Giovanni. From 1988 to 1994 he was artistic director for the Tonkünstler in Vienna, from 2003 to 2010 of the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra, and from 2004 to 2009 of the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, in France. Since 2004 he has been artistic director of the Petrobras Symphony of Rio de Janeiro.
Sales Points • Villa-Lobos’ symphonies are not his best known orchestral music - Bachainas brasileiras is far better known for instance. And yet the cycle contains some of his most arresting and individual writing. This massive Tenth Symphony has a vast percussion section and is sculpted on a grand scale – it’s a hybrid symphony-oratorio. There is a competing cycle from CPO featuring the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra but it the Naxos cycle has won all the critical plaudits; ‘‘Terrific 10/10’ – Fanfare and ‘Karabtchevsky leads the way’ - Gramophone on Symphonies 3 and 4 [8.573151] Supplementary Promotional Materials • •

Key release kit Artist profile
Antoni Wit, one of the most highly regarded Polish conductors, studied conducting with Henryk Czyz at the Academy of Music in Kraków. He then continued his musical studies with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. After winning second prize in the International Herbert von Karajan Conducting Competition in Berlin (1971), he became an assistant conductor to the patron of that competition. From 2002 to 2013 Antoni Wit was the managing and artistic director of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. He has made over 200 records, including an acclaimed release for Naxos of the piano concertos of Prokofiev, awarded the Diapason d’Or and Grand Prix du Disque de la Nouvelle Académie du Disque. In 2012 he received a GRAMMY® Award for Penderecki’s Fonogrammi, Horn Concerto and Partita (8.572482). Antoni Wit is professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.
Antonín Dvořák’s huge popularity in England was built largely on the success of his Stabat Mater, which he had conducted there in 1884 and 1885. It was well suited to the country’s choral traditions and led eventually to a commission for a Requiem, which was premièred in Birmingham in 1891. Written in ten months during tours to Russia, England and Germany, its success was immediate. Sitting closer to the tradition of Cherubini than Verdi, its tone is compassionate and reflective, devoid of unnecessary drama, and movingly crafted with great sophistication.
© Dominik Skurzak
Sales Points • Dvořák's Requiem is a work of humanity and compassion and has attracted a large number of recordings. There is the classic Ančerl-directed one, and others conducted by Neumann, Sawallich and Kertesz have long dominated the catalog since the 1960s and 70s onwards. Conductor Antoni Wit is a Naxos regular and a renowned interpreter of Slavic music - in the past he has also recorded Dvořák - the Piano Concerto on 8.550896 and the Czech Suite coupled with Hero's Song on 8.553005

François DEVIENNE (1759–1803) Flute Concertos, Vol. 1 Flute Concertos Nos. 1-4 Patrick Gallois, Flute Swedish Chamber Orchestra
Patrick Gallois
François Devienne was among the most important composers of wind music in the second half of the 18th century and one of the founding teachers at the newly established Paris Conservatoire in 1795. Devienne’s First Flute Concerto was a great success at the 1782 Concert Spirituel and helped his reputation abroad. The Fourth is one of the best of his entire concerto output. All of these works combine sublime melodic elegance and graceful virtuosity, making them among the most attractive concertos of their time.
The Swedish Chamber Orchestra made its United States and United Kingdom débuts with Thomas Dausgaard in 2004, performing at the London Proms and Lincoln Center, Mostly Mozart Festival. The New York Times wrote of that performance: “It has been a longstanding complaint in the classical music world that as recordings and jet travel have shrunk the globe, an international sound has been fostered that has filtered out regional differences in timbre and interpretation... And every now and then an orchestra comes along with a sound that is surprising and fresh. The Swedish Chamber Orchestra, led by its music director, Thomas Dausgaard, produced a distinctive and consistently vibrant sound.”
© Ulla-Carin Ekblom
Sales Points • Patrick Gallois has been hugely successful as both performer and conductor with numerous acclaimed Naxos recordings to his name. He has already combined both talents in flute concertos by Mercadante (8.572731), “conducting the orchestra while simultaneously negotiating hair-raising difficulties with seemingly nonchalant ease” (Gramophone). Devienne’s flute concertos have rarely been recorded in their entirety, and with only one hard-to-acquire East European set with soloist Claudi Arimany from the 1990s as competition, this new edition will provide a major boost to some core Classical repertoire and become an automatic first choice both for collectors and Patrick Gallois’s many fans. Patrick Gallois belongs to the generation of French musicians leading highly successful international careers as both soloist and conductor. Both as a conductor and as a flautist he has a wide repertoire, with a strong taste for contemporary music, and many new works have been dedicated to him. His recordings for Naxos of Kraus’s Aeneas i Cartago (8.570585) and the Violin Concertos of Saint-Saëns with Fanny Clamagirand (Naxos 8.572037) were awarded a Choc by Classica each in April 2010 and February 2011 respectively. A further Choc (Classica) was awarded for his recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concertos with Tianwa Yang and Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä (8.572662).

Elora Festival Singers
The Wonder of Christmas Michael Bloss, Organ Elora Festival Singers • Noel Edison
The Elora Festival Singers, conducted by internationally acclaimed director Noel Edison, is one of the most exciting of contemporary choirs. Their disc of Eric Whitacre’s choral music (8.559677) was nominated for a GRAMMY® in 2010. Now they turn to the art of the Christmas carol, a genre covering a variety of styles, both popular and refined, each piece expressing religious sentiments and beliefs. The music ranges from much-loved settings to new works, from polyphony to more straightforward melodies, in a recital stretching from the Middle Ages to the music of today. Sales Points • This much admired choir and director have been lavishly praised for their previous Naxos discs. ‘Choral enthusiasts, arise! Here is a new recording that you can really get excited about.’ - ClassicsToday 10/10, of the album ‘Psalms of the Soul’ [8.554823]. This latest disc celebrates the art of the Christmas Carol, from the Middle Ages to the music of today, not least in the settings by John Tavener and the ever-popular John Rutter. This is the perfect Christmas offering.

After the success of Aida in December 1871, and despite his enormous popularity, Verdi retired as an operatic composer. It took the young publisher Giulio Ricordi and composer and librettist Arrigo Boito a number of years to entice him to embark on what was originally called Jago, and only later known as Otello. Verdi retained a reverence for Shakespeare, and had already composed Macbeth. With Otello, completed in November 1886, and triumphantly received, he created a masterpiece from a play that, as Bernard Shaw noted, had all the ingredients of an Italian opera.

"The orchestra likes you, because you are inspiring!" Maestro James Levine said these words to Friedrich Haider, who had just made his stunning debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York with Verdi's Rigoletto in the autumn of the year 2006. Since his opera debut in 1984, he has given successful symphonic performances with some of the world¹s leading orchestras, such as the London Symphony, the Czech Philharmonic, Göteborgs Symfoniker and the Milan Chamber Orchestra. In 2004, Friedrich Haider took over the Oviedo Filarmonía in Northern Spain, which has given superb performances under his baton since the very first symphony concerts.
Sales Points • Otello emerged after many years of silence from Verdi, who had retired from operatic composition a number of years before. It has been recorded many times and is in the top 25 operas performed around the world, and is sung by the world’s leading singers and ensembles. Naxos has a historic recording of Otello available and it has been included in excerpted form, but not complete and newly recorded, as here.

Yevhen STANKOVYCH (b. 1942) Symphonies Nos. 1, 2 and 4 National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine Theodore Kuchar
Yevhen Stankovych is regarded by many as the most important Ukrainian composer of his generation. His First Symphony for strings expresses both pathos and drama. The Second Symphony, with a dramatic requiem at its core, conveys a protest against war and stands as a monument to bravery and to those who perished. The Fourth Symphony is renowned for its romantic lyrical language and rich string sound. Sales Points • Originally released on our Marco Polo label, this striking recording of symphonic work by Yevhen Stankovytch was “commended for exposing the work of a composer belonging to the same generation as Schnittke and Gubaidulina but not yet as fashionable in the West as they are and who is perhaps more immediately communicative... Kuchar leads his musicians in performances of transfiguring devotedness, involvement, and clarification." (Fanfare) As with the work of his teacher Boris Lyatoshynsky, Yevhen Stankovytch’s incredibly potent and expressive music is virtually unknown in the West, and we seek to redress this state of affairs by placing these symphonies firmly into our mainstream catalogue. Boris LYATOSHYNSKY (1895-1968) Symphonies, Vol. 1 Symphony No. 1 in A major, Op. 2 Grazhyna – Symphonic Ballad Ukrainian State Symphony Orchestra Theodore Kuchar
Boris Lyatoshynsky is seen as the father of twentieth-century Ukrainian music. His compositions brought him not only critical acclaim, but also into conflict with the Soviet authorities. The remarkable First Symphony draws on the romantic traditions of Tchaikovsky and Wagner, and has at its heart a dramatic and tragic central movement originally entitled Lyric Poem. The symphonic ballad Grazyhna is one of Lyatoshynsky’s true masterworks, expressing the highly charged emotions of sorrow and heroism in Adam Mickiewicz’s inspirational poem. This is the first of three discs comprising the complete Lyatoshynsky symphonies.

The original release of this particular title on our Marco Polo label was warmly received by American Record Guide, which said that the “sound is refined and clear, with good directionality. This is the best recording of the First Symphony.” Gramophone also considered Lyatoshynsky “an interesting and impressive figure who… well deserves this introduction to a wider audience with what sound like committed and authoritative performances." The new generation of twentieth-century Ukrainian composers was led by Boris Lyatoshynsky, whose symphonic cycle is the most important in his country’s musical history. Jean-Luc Tingaud
Paul Abraham DUKAS Symphony in C
(1865–1935) RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice • La Péri RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra Jean-LucTingaud
Jean-Luc Tingaud was born in 1969 and studied with Manuel Rosenthal, himself a pupil of Maurice Ravel. Notable opera engagements include Sapho, Pénélope, Le roi malgré lui (Wexford Festival), Roméo et Juliette (Lisbon), La damnation de Faust (Reims), Le siège de Corinthe (Bad Wildbad Rossini Festival), Dialogues des carmélites and Madama Butterfly (Pittsburgh), Pelléas et Mélisande (Prague), and The Pearl Fishers (English National Opera). Concert engagements include the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, the Warsaw and Kraków Philharmonic Orchestras, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, and Orchestre National de Lyon. His recordings include Sapho (Wexford), Werther (Martina Franca), La voix humaine (Compiegne), and Le siège de Corinthe (Bad Wildbad). A further recording for Naxos with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of music by Bizet is in production.
Paul Dukas is famed for his brilliant, meticulously scored symphonic scherzo The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, first performed in 1897, which almost immediately entered the international repertoire. It was subsequently the focus of a ballet and later Walt Disney’s film Fantasia. Magical scoring is also a feature of La péri, a poème dansé of great imaginative verve. The delightful, colourful Symphony in C was composed mid-way between these works. For this recording, manuscript sources for the three works were consulted, including the hitherto private proofs of the first edition of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, ensuring rigorously faithful performances. Sales Points • The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is one of the great orchestral showpieces and internationally famous. It was used in the Disney film, Fantasia. La Péri is less well-known but delightfully orchestrated and full of interest. The Symphony in C is not as often performed as it should be for so colourful a score - but it has attracted on disc conductors such as Yan-Pascal Tortelier, Jean Fournet, Jean Martinon, Walter Weller, Leonard Slatkin and a number of others. The USP of this disc is that original manuscript sources for all three works have been consulted, ensuring works faithful to Dukas’ intentions.

De Profundis Miserere • Requiem
Pizzetti • Malipiero • Allegri • MacMillan • Puccini Vasari Singers • Jeremy Backhouse
These three pairs of sublime choral settings span well over 350 years. The earliest is Allegri’s Miserere, a work considered so precious it was kept secret until Mozart heard it and famously transcribed it from memory. James MacMillan’s 21st century companion piece is a transcendent reply to this challenge from history. Malipiero’s and Pizzetti’s resumption of a fractured friendship resulted in their mutually dedicated but differing settings of De profundis. Puccini’s brief but exquisite Requiem commemorated the death of Verdi, while Pizzetti, a late admirer of Puccini, revealed his empathy with vocal polyphony in a full setting of the Requiem Mass. Sales Points • The Vasari Singers will be adding De Profundis to a growing series of highly popular choral discs in the Naxos catalogue. These include Great British Anthems (8.572504), described by Gramophone as “essential listening”, and A Winter’s Light (8.573030) hailed as “sensational… one is in awe before a choir that can turn in [such] magnificent performances” by International Record Review. The musical jewel that is Allegri’s Miserere will always be a big attraction, and while James MacMillan’s beautiful Miserere was commissioned as a companion work and recorded by The Sixteen, they didn’t include the Allegri in their recorded program. These imaginative pairings and the evocative music throughout this CD will make it a release few can resist. © Ash Mills

Grażyna BACEWICZ (1909-1969) Symphony for String Orchestra
Concerto for String Orchestra • Piano Quintet, No. 1* Ewa Kupiec, Piano* Capella Bydgostiensis Chamber Orchestra • Mariusz Smolij
Grażyna Bacewicz played a leading role in bringing Polish music into the 20th-century mainstream and onto the international stage. Following in the footsteps of Szymanowski, her works convey a striking emotional directness by combining elements of native Polish folksong with an invigorating openness to the possibilities of modernism. The Symphony for String Orchestra reflects the lively optimism felt at the end of World War II, while the award-winning Concerto for String Orchestra is one of her most important post-war works. The intense and expressive First Piano Quintet is heard here in a new version for chamber orchestra by the conductor Mariusz Smolij. Sales Points • Remarkable for its strength of character and consistently superb quality, Grażyna Bacewicz’s music has gained in popularity in recent years while still lying in the shadow of the later generation of Polish composers which includes Penderecki and Lutosławski. Recorded in the stunning hall of the Pomeranian Philharmonic, this release includes a brand new chamber orchestra version of the remarkable Piano Quintet No. 1 made by conductor and regular Naxos artist Mariusz Smolij, whose recording of Capella Bydgostiensis Eugene Zádor’s work (8.572549) lead ClassicsToday.com Chamber Orchestra to the conclusion that he “conducts as though he’s been performing these pieces forever… top-notch. Respighi’s Sonata in B minor was completed a year after The Fountains of Rome had brought him international renown. A work of considerable dimensions and scope, it combines expressive intensity with techniques grounded in early Italian music. Like Respighi, Pizzetti, Casella, Malipiero and others, Riccardo PickMangiagalli belonged to the ‘generation of the 1880s’, which played such a key rôle in the resurgence of Italian instrumental music. His early Sonata, notable for its concise ideas and attractive melodies, and the three short pieces on this album, comprise the complete works for violin and piano of an undeservedly neglected composer. Sales Points • Emy Bernecoli (violin) and Massimo Giuseppe Bianchi (piano) have been acclaimed for their “impassioned, technically polished and rhythmically rock-solid interpretations” (Gramophone on 8.572828, Ghedini), and the first of this two volume set of Respighi’s complete works for violin and piano (8.573129) also appeared in March 2014 to positive reviews such as “a first rate success” (Musica), and “duo Bernecoli and Bianchi…demonstrate individual flare along with joint integrity and unforced collaborative intuitiveness” (MusicWeb International). That disc of early works is followed in this second volume not only with Respighi’s great Sonata in B minor, but uniquely offers the complete works for violin and piano of his undeservedly neglected contemporary Riccardo PickMangiagalli, ensuring that this set delivers a high proportion of surprise and fresh discovery. Idil Biret Chamber Music Edition, Vol. 1 Robert SCHUMANN (1810-1856) Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44 Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13 Idil Biret, Piano • Borusan Quartet
“Idil Biret’s recordings of Schumann’s Kreisleriana, Blumenstück and Carnaval de Vienne show the pianist in her best form: majestic, accurate, clear and always poetic. The lyrical sections of the Kreisleriana are of dreamlike beauty while the fast movements are at times performed with extraordinary humour and at others with glowing passion. Truly Schumannesque.” - PIANO NEWS – Germany 2013 “The most exciting young pianist to come to Montreal in years. She has a personal magnetism that belongs only to a certain type of virtuoso performer, one who succeeds in hypnotizing you no matter how or what he or she is playing… Miss Biret is one of the finest natural Schumann players I have ever come across. In fact I cannot recall ever hearing a better all round performance of Schumann’s Fantasiestücke in any concert hall in this city.” - THE MONTREAL STAR – Canada 1960 Companion Titles 8.571305

Alfred HILL (1869-1960) String Quartets, Vol. 5
String Quartet No. 12 in E major String Quartet No. 13 in E flat major String Quartet No. 14 in B minor Dominion String Quartet
Although Australian by birth, Alfred Hill spent much of his youth in New Zealand before embarking on studies in Leipzig, where he met Brahms, Dvořák and Tchaikovsky. A prolific symphonist and operatic composer, he also wrote a sequence of seventeen notable string quartets. His style evolved constantly, the influence of Dvořák leading on to the impressionism of his mid-period. By the time of the String Quartets Nos. 12 to 14 his mastery of technique – in his younger days he had played in a prominent string quartet – ensure that the music is balanced, subtle, and full of playful wit. This is the fifth of six volumes of the complete Alfred Hill String Quartets. © Luzien Rizos
Sales Points • This is the fifth volume in the series devoted to pioneering Australian composer Alfred Hill. He was an important figure in Australian and New Zealand music, and the leading Australasian composer of his generation. His long sequence of quartets is the first such by an Australian and embraces late Romanticism, hints of Dvořák, impressionism, folk music and other influences. The Dominion String Quartet has recorded the cycle and received fine reviews for their performances, and they are leading ambassadors for the music of their country.

Ernő DOHNÁNYI (1877-1960) Piano Quintets Nos. 1 and 2
Gottlieb Wallisch, Piano • Ensō String Quartet Few composers have achieved greater success with their first published composition than Ernő Dohnányi with his Piano Quintet in C minor, Op. 1. Written in 1895 and praised highly by Brahms, who is believed to have organised a Viennese performance shortly afterwards, it heralded the emergence of a major new talent. The harmonic ambiguity of the 1914 Piano Quintet in E flat minor points to the composer’s awareness of ongoing developments in European music. Still underestimated, it ranks among the most important works of Dohnányi’s ‘middle period’. © Jurgen Frank
Sales Points • Dohnányi’s two Piano Quintets were composed in the earlier part of his life, the Op.1 reflective of his admiration for the music of Brahms and the second showing a growing sophistication and personalisation. His first quintet was a tremendous success, and it was admired by Brahms. Competition comes from the Kocian group on Praga, the Schubert Ensemble of London on Helios and the Audubon on Centaur in particular, all coupling the quintets and some adding another work. In our disc they are played by the Ensō String Quartet, who were lavishly praised for their Ginastera Quartet recording [8.570780] which was a Grammy nominated disc.

Isaac ALBÉNIZ (1860-1909) Piano Music, Vol. 6 España • Deseo • Zortzico Yvonne en visite!
Santiago L. Sacristán Volume 6 of this complete edition focusses in the main on Albéniz’s richly varied, early salon style. It includes the dazzling Chopin influenced Vals Champagne, the Estudio de concierto which rivals Liszt for virtuosity, and the famous Tango from España: Seis hojas de Álbum, a set which conjures up Spain in its rhythms, harmonies and sense of drama. Written a year before the composer’s death, Yvonne en visite! includes a humorous scene during a pupil’s reluctant performance, while the Marcha militar is Albéniz’s earliest work, composed at the age of eight. © Dolores E. Espadas Frias
Sales Points • This sixth volume in our acclaimed series of Albéniz’s complete piano works continues our exploration of the composer’s less well-known salon pieces written in the first of his three compositional phases. A mixture of romantic styles with habanera and flamenco rhythms ensures lively variety, while pieces such as the famous Op. 165 No. 2 Tango stand out as familiar landmarks. Volumes 1 (8.554311-12), 2 (8.570553) and 3 Santiago L. Sacristán (8.572196) have been followed in June 2014 by vol. 4 (8.573294) and vol. 5 in August 2014 (8.573293), maintaining a momentum which has already encouraged large numbers of collectors worldwide.

Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809) The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross Jenő Jandó, Piano
The request for Haydn to write The Seven Last Words came from a priest in Cádiz to mark Good Friday. Setting the words of Christ gave Haydn the basis for the construction of seven slow and meditative movements to be played by the orchestra as the Bishop descended from the pulpit to pray. The following year Haydn arranged the work for string quartet and a version for keyboard was prepared. To this version, which he did not prepare himself, Haydn gave his wholehearted approval noting that it was ‘very good and made with particular care’.

Playing Time: 67:39 7

Sales Points • The Seven Last Words is a profoundly melancholy sequence of movements, a series of meditations. It has a complex history, being first written for orchestral forces, then arranged the following year for string quartet – and later a final version for vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra. At the same time as the quartet version, a piano version was released. The quartet version is very popular and there are numerous recordings in all its versions, but the piano version of 1787 has few recordings. The most prominent competition is on Channel Classics played on the fortepiano (but not on the pianoforte) by Jos van Immerseel. Our recording is played by the eminent and much-recorded Jenő Jandó. WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDINGS
These composers were all affected by the carnage of World War I, and their elegiac music expresses regret and lost innocence, love won and lost, sacrifice and death. George Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad, conceived as an epilogue to his Housman song cycles, encapsulates the poet’s sense of life’s transience. Ivor Gurney was both shot and gassed in 1917, and The Trumpet pleads with mankind to set aside the folly of war. Heard here in a new completion, Gerald Finzi’s Requiem da Camera mourns the death of his mentor Ernest Farrar and those of other fallen artists, and Ralph Vaughan Williams’s An Oxford Elegy recalls lost friends with an intense and magical nostalgia.

Waller, Readings The Celebration Choir • J. Donald Dumpson, Choir Master The Music Liberation Orchestra • The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia Dirk Brossé Award-winning composer and trumpet player Hannibal Lokumbe is a leader in expressing the African-American experience through his orchestral and choral music, with a special focus on civil rights leaders. Can You Hear God Crying? is a ʻspiritatorioʼ which takes us on a journey from hardship and suffering to healing and celebrations of courage and peace, told through the forced migration aboard a slave ship endured by Lokumbeʼs greatgrandfather Silas Burgess. Combining jazz, gospel and chamber music together with West African prayers and songs, this is both a moving commemoration and a spectacularly festive event which faces past and present with honesty and deep spiritual understanding.
