FIRST RECORDING OF THE COMPLETE OPERA
Performed for the first time in its original uncut version, this production of Guillaume Tell was the jewel in the crown of the 25-year history of the ‘Rossini in Wildbad’ opera festival. Rossini’s final, great, operatic masterpiece is a story of liberation, the oppressed Swiss attaining their ideal of emancipation by hounding the tyrannical Habsburgs out of their country. Although it was composed for the complex demands of the Paris Opéra, numerous dances, choruses and arias were dropped for reasons of practicality. These are restored in the present recording which also includes the stunning finale of the shorter 1831 version of the opera (CD 4 / Track 13). Key Features • This production of Rossini’s Guillaume Tell was the jewel in the crown of the 2013 ‘Rossini in Wildbad’ opera festival, the music director of which is one of the leading belcanto conductors in the world, the brilliant Italian Antonino Fogliani. Successful releases from this source have included Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri (8.660284-85) considered “among the best available” by Opera News. The performance is headed by Andrew Foster-Williams in the title role, renowned for his “resounding strength, unadorned clarity, shapely phrasing and excellent diction” (The Australian). This world première of the uncut version represents the first ever performance of Guillaume Tell without changes to the original score, and for this reason alone will have a great impact in the opera world and beyond.

John Knowles PAINE (1839–1906) Orchestral Works, Vol. 2
Symphony No. 2 ‘In the Spring’ Oedipus Tyrannus – Prelude Poseidon and Amphitrite – An Ocean Fantasy†
JoAnn Falleta
JoAnn Falletta serves as Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic and Virginia Symphony and is the Principal Guest Conductor of the Brevard Music Center of North Carolina. She served as Principal Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra from 2011 to 2014, with whom she made her début at London’s prestigious Proms with the orchestra and recorded music of Gustav Holst, E.J. Moeran and John Knowles Paine. A champion of American music, she has presented over five hundred works by American composers including 110 world premières. Her Naxos recordings include the double GRAMMY® Award-winning disc of works by John Corigliano and GRAMMY® nominated discs of works by Tyberg, Dohnányi, Fuchs, Schubert, Respighi, Gershwin, Hailstork and Holst.

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING
The late 19th century witnessed unprecedented musical growth in the United States, and it is impossible to imagine a Copland, an Ives or even a Gershwin without the pioneering groundwork of the ‘Boston Six’, of whom John Knowles Paine was the senior member. Favorite among his own works, Paine’s Second Symphony was described on its New York première as “a serious, important and totally beautiful work.” His Prelude to the tragic play Oedipus Tyrannus was an immediate hit, while An Ocean Fantasy was his last orchestral piece. The first of this set of two volumes of Paine’s complete published orchestral works is available on 8.559747.
Companion Titles
Key Features • This second volume of John Knowles Paine’s orchestral work completes our new and exceptionally fine recordings of all of his published orchestral works. Volume 1 (8.559747) includes the First Symphony, of which ClassicsToday.com noted that the work “has been recorded previously, but not better than this version featuring JoAnn Falletta and the Ulster Orchestra.” Gramophone admired the recording’s “attractively large sound stage with impressive, natural power”, and Fanfare considered it “an urgently recommended, indispensable release.” With recordings of most of these works thin on the ground or entirely unavailable, this set is an instant and highly desirable reference for this fine repertoire.

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING
Julian Lloyd Webber is one of today’s leading musicians. His many recordings include his Brit Award-winning Elgar Concerto conducted by Yehudi Menuhin (chosen as the finest ever version by BBC Music Magazine), and a coupling of Britten’s Cello Symphony and Walton’s Concerto with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martinin-the-Fields, which was described by Gramophone magazine as “beyond any rival”. This recording is Julian Lloyd Webber’s first as a conductor. His performance of Howard Goodall’s And the Bridge is Love is his final recording as a cellist.
This wide-ranging programme of English music for strings includes the world première recording of Howard Goodall’s moving And the Bridge is Love, in which Julian Lloyd Webber plays cello, and of William Lloyd Webber’s The Moon, only performed for the first time in 2014. There are also established classics such as Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro, Op. 47, as well as novelties in the case of the never-before-recorded arrangements by Elgar’s friend and biographer W.H. Reed of the two Chansons.
Companion Titles
Key Features • From the late nineteenth-century British music experienced a flourishing of compositions for strings, spearheaded by the genius of Elgar. His Introduction and Allegro, Op.4 is one of the masterpieces of the genre, but smaller pieces such as the two Chansons – heard in never-before-recorded arrangements by his friend and biography W.H. Reed - distil his lyric essence and are performed by one of the world’s leading musicians, Julian Lloyd Webber. He also plays cello in the world première recording of Howard Goodall’s moving And the Bridge is Love. He has also included the poetic Moon written by his father, William, and unperformed until 2014.

Jean-Luc Tingaud
Georges BIZET (1838–1875) Roma
Jean-Luc Tingaud studied with Manuel Rosenthal, himself a pupil of Maurice Ravel. Concert engagements include the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Orchestra of Opera North, Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, Orchestra of the Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa, Orchestra of the Teatro Massimo, Palermo, the Warsaw and Kraków Philharmonic Orchestras, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, Orchestre National de Lyon, and the Orchestre National de Lorraine. His most recent recording for Naxos (8.573296) was of music by Paul Dukas including The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, La péri and the Symphony in C.
Marche funèbre • Overture in A Patrie • Petite suite RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra Jean-Luc Tingaud
The success of Bizet’s opera Carmen has overshadowed the rest of his output, but this fascinating orchestral programme, which includes a number of seldom performed works, reveals more of his talent for writing colourful, atmospheric and melodic music. The Overture in A was Bizet’s first orchestral work and unperformed in his lifetime, while the Marche funèbre was originally the prelude to an opera about love and vengeance, now lost. The dramatic overture Patrie captures the mood following the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71, while the Petite suite is a set of orchestrations of movements from Jeux d’enfants (Children’s Games). Conceived in Italy as a symphony, after Bizet had won the Prix de Rome, Roma occupied the composer for 11 years before the final version heard here.

Key Features • The record catalogues are awash with versions of Bizet’s Carmen, but the works in this fine orchestral program are far less frequently heard. Our championing of Bizet’s neglected oeuvre has previously included an attractive set of his complete piano music (8.570831-32). The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra has already booked successes with recordings including symphonies by Havergal Brian (8.572014) considered “superb” by American Record Guide, and three highly acclaimed volumes of the music of Luís de Freitas Branco (8.570765, 8.572059 and 8.572370). More recently the orchestra has teamed up with conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud, whose recording of orchestral works by Paul Dukas (8.573296) was reviewed 9/9 by ClassicsToday.com. Yuri Serov graduated from the St Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in 1993, and studied also in Salzburg and Weimar. As a conductor and solo pianist he has toured more than 25 countries and has made over 60 recordings for a number of labels in Russia, Belgium, Japan and the United States. Yuri Serov is the author of many articles and essays on music, and at present teaches at the St Petersburg Conservatory. He is Artistic Director of the Northern Flowers international music festival, and founder and editor of the CD series St Petersburg Musical Archive.
The great twentieth-century Russian poet, Mikhail Alexeevich Kuzmin, was for much of his early life also passionately devoted to composition. Masterpieces of the vocal miniature, his Sacred Songs for voice and orchestra are settings of his own words based on studies of ancient Russian music. His incidental music for Masquerade is notable for a heartfelt Romance and a closing chorus which draws upon traditional Russian church music. The Society of Honoured Bell Ringers displays Mahlerian and Mozartian influences whilst greater harmonic complexity can be savoured in Kuzmin’s edgier music for Der deutsche Hinkemann. Key Features • Mikhail Alexeevich Kuzmin is best remembered in his native Russia as a poet. But for the first half of his life he composed – he was a student of Rimsky-Korsakov – and received appreciative reviews. He admitted to an admiration for Mozart and Mahler – a small amount of that can perhaps be heard in this disc of largely incidental music. But there is also much dance-based music (polkas, waltzes etc) as well as somewhat terser writing in the 1923 music for the play Der deutsche Hinkemann. He is an example of Russian artist who came to grief under the Soviet regime. No other examples of his music are to be found in Arkivmusic’s catalogue.

Carl CZERNY (1791–1857) Bel Canto Concertante
Virtuoso Variations for Piano and Orchestra
Rosemary Tuck
Rosemary Tuck, Piano English Chamber Orchestra • Richard Bonynge
Companion Titles
Carl Czerny is remembered as a pupil and friend of Beethoven and the composer of numerous piano studies, but in his lifetime he was renowned for a prodigious output of brilliant concert works, most of which remain entirely unknown to present-day audiences and performers. Inspired by the most famous and attractive themes from Bel Canto operas which were hugely popular in their time and are still performed today, these sets of variations give full rein to the soloist and are a major contribution to the great pianist-composer tradition. Key Features • Carl Czerny is known to have produced more than a thousand works as a composer, but aside from recordings of the piano sonatas and a few symphonies his popular concert music and other serious work remains largely undiscovered. This title, Bel Canto Concertante, focusses on Czerny’s at times spectacularly virtuosic concert variations based on the most popular operas of his day, making for an approachably light but hugely entertaining feast for the listener. Rosemary Tuck and Richard Bonynge have already teamed up in two recordings of works by William Vincent Wallace, the first of which was described as “sumptuous and [with] a particularly balletic elegance” (8.572774), while the second was chosen as a Gramophone ‘Holiday Critic’s Choice’ (8.572776).

Alexandre TANSMAN (1897-1986) Music for Violin and Piano
World Première Recordings
Sonatas • Sonatinas • Romance • Fantaisie Klaidi Sahatçi, Violin • Giorgio Koukl, Piano
Although Alexandre Tansman was considered a genius in his lifetime, these recordings demonstrate that much of his chamber music remains to be rediscovered after years of neglect. Tansman’s early successes included the prize-winning Romance and late-Romantic Sonate No. 2, ensuring his move from Poland into Parisian cultural life. The exploratory character and exquisite poetry of the Sonate quasi una fantasia contrasts with the concise First Sonatine with its playful Fox-Trot. Despite its wartime origins the Second Sonatine is bright and buoyant, while the Fantaisie is an expressively lyrical product of Tansman’s final period.

Key Features • Despite something of a revival in recent years the range and quality of Alexandre Tansman’s work is still being discovered, as the numerous world première recordings on this program show. Works such as the Sonatine No. 1 and Fantaisie have appeared in other versions (with flute and cello respectively), but Klaidi Sahatçi Giorgio Koukl most of this music is entirely new to CD. Albanian violinist Klaidi Sahatči has been acclaimed widely as a soloist and is currently First Concertmaster of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zürich. Pianist Giorgio Koukl has become one of our most sought after recording artists since his performances of the complete piano works of Bohuslav Martinů, as well as that of Alexander Tcherepnin on the Grand Piano label. This title joins a number of Naxos recordings of Tansman’s music, including for clarinet and piano (8.570235) which is a reference recording in the Penguin Guide, an ICMA award nominated program of piano music (8.572266), and his Clarinet Concerto (8.572402). © Lisa-Marie Mazzucco
The few pieces that George Rochberg wrote for flute are as bold and individualistic as anything in his oeuvre. His ability to compose in an astonishing variety of voices is clearly shown in the Caprice Variations, based on Paganini’s famous melody, in homages to composers from Bach to Bartók. Christina Jennings’ transcriptions challenge the player with dynamic, technical and stylistic extremes. Rochberg’s Ukiyo-e pieces are among his most beautiful and haunting works. Praised for her virtuoso technique and rich tone, flutist Christina Jennings is an acknowledged expert in Rochberg’s music.

Key Features • The music of George Rochberg has a significant place in our American Classics catalogue, with acclaimed recordings of the Violin Concerto (8.559129), and the ‘major discovery’ (MusicWeb International) of the Symphonies and complete Piano Music all establishing a firm platform for further exploration of this iconic composer’s work. This first volume of the complete Flute Music includes acclaimed flautist Christina Jennings’s own virtuoso transcription of the Caprice Variations which are best known in their original version for violin. Francis POULENC (1899-1963) Mass in G major Sept Chansons • Motets Elora Festival Singers • Noel Edison
© Sophie Hogan
Poulenc had not written for choral forces for over a decade when, in 1936, his friend and fellow-composer Pierre-Octave Ferroud was killed in harrowing circumstances. This, fused with the memory of his father’s death, caused a spiritual crisis in Poulenc’s life which led to a series of important compositions for chorus. The powerful Mass in G major is a missa brevis with a daring use of tonality, though the playfulness of Poulenc’s ‘Les Six’ period is not absent. In Sept Chansons, to surrealist texts, and in the two sets of Motets - both very personal and penitential – Poulenc generates a huge range of emotion.
8.572978
Playing Time: 54:13 7
Key Features • These are popular examples of Poulenc’s vocal music. They appear in a big multi-disc EMI boxed retrospective. Many have recorded the great Mass in G major – the American conductor Robert Shaw coupled it with the Quatre Motets pour le temps de Noël – in an all-Poulenc 2003 disc for Telarc. But many conductor such as Haitink, Hickox, Dutoit, Prêtre and Ozawa have also recorded the Masse. The Sept Chansons are popular - they feature on a Channel Classics disc with the Mass Noel Edison and Fugure humaine –but also in mixed recitals alongside vocal music by Hindemith, Debussy and Ravel, for example, on Capriccio. The Spanish composer Manuel Castillo wrote prolifically in a wide range of genres. His works for guitar, many of which are unpublished, reveal a keen awareness of the instrument’s expressive and virtuosic potential, whether in the passionate energy of the Sonata or the evocative imagery of the beautiful Kasidas del Alcázar, inspired by the kasidas (an Arabic poetic form) of the 20thcentury Sevillian poet Joaquín Romero Murube. The masterly Quintet with Guitar is an important addition to the small body of twentieth-century works for guitar and string quartet. Key Features • This is part of Naxos’s Guitar Collection. Castillo’s guitar works are rare on disc, given that very little was actually published and much still remains in manuscript. His piano works are significantly betterknown and there’s a disc on Almaviva which has made Marcello Fantoni his name a little more familiar. Castillo trod a mid-path, neither lapsing into Late-Romanticism not embracing the avant-garde. His guitar music is highly approachable and full of expression and colour. The Quintet with Guitar is a very rare example of this combination in the twentieth-century of guitar with string quartet and should make an immediate appeal. Companion Titles

Leonard BERNSTEIN (1918-1990) Thirteen Anniversaries Piano Sonata • Seven Anniversaries Music for the Dance No. II • Non Troppo Presto† Alexandre Dossin, Piano †
WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING
Known for his large-scale compositions, Leonard Bernstein also wrote for his own instrument, the piano. The sequence of four Anniversaries, published between 1944 and 1989, are brief, deftly evocative vignettes written to celebrate his many friends, colleagues and family members. The early Piano Sonata is imbued with youthful self-confidence, and explores certain compositional techniques to which he was to return in more mature works. The rhythmically incisive Music for the Dance No. II is another important early work.
8.559756
Playing Time: 61:05 6
36943 97562 6
Key Features • There have been a few attempts at the Complete Bernstein piano discs but none is quite complete. Alexander Frey’s account on Koch in 1999, still in print, covers much of the ground though it has not received much celebrity. Thomas Lammers recorded Bernstein for Centaur and this includes the Anniversaries 4, 5, 7 and 13 – 7 and 13 are played on Naxos’s disc – though other labels approach things differently by coupling Bernstein’s Alexandre Dossin piano works with those of his American contemporaries, such as Copland and Barber. Bernstein’s piano works, mostly written when he was young, have generally been overlooked, so this is an opportunity to promote them. Companion Titles

Domenico SCARLATTI (1685-1757) Complete Keyboard Sonatas, Vol. 16 Duanduan Hao, Piano
The Scarlatti family was famed across Europe, Alessandro for his operatic compositions and his son, Domenico, for his keyboard works. Employed by several royal families, Domenico moved to Madrid in 1728 following the marriage of his pupil, the Infanta Maria Barbara, to the heir to the Spanish throne. There, largely for her, he wrote a vast number of sonatas that remain amongst the most important of the eighteenth century. Duanduan Hao’s previous recording for this series [8.572586 / Volume 14] was acclaimed by ClassicsToday.com for his ‘crisp, well-poised finger-work, centered sonority, and superb articulation [which] are ideal for Scarlatti’.

Key Features • This is volume 16 in the complete Scarlatti keyboard sonata series. Domenico Scarlatti’s 555 (or so) sonatas have provided a tremendous repertoire for keyboard players over many years. There are boxed set editions of a large number of the sonatas currently available by single artists, such as Richard Lester on Nimbus, and Gilbert Rowland on Kingdom, and Pieter-Jan Belder on Brilliant Classics. This Naxos series is different, and has been parcelled out to different pianists – volume 14 was also performed by Duanduan Hao, who won the 2009 Shanghai International Piano Competition and received acclaim for volume 14 [8.572586] in ClassicsToday.com: ‘Hao’s crisp, well-poised finger-work, centered sonority, and superb articulation are ideal for Scarlatti.’ Companion Titles

Digital Exclusive Portuguese Vocal Masterpieces of the 16th and 17th Centuries • 1 Capella Durienses Jonathan Ayerst, Conductor
The repertoire on this recording represents a period of around 150 years, from the earliest Portuguese polyphony of the Missa ‘Orbis Factor’ and Franco-Flemish influences in the motets of Damãio de Góis, to the ‘Golden Age’ and sacred works by well-known figures such as Manuel Cardoso and Duarte Lobo, of which these are the only two surviving motets. Capella Duriensis is a young Portuguese vocal ensemble with a growing reputation as international ambassadors of Portuguese music. This is the first of their three volumes of Portuguese Vocal Masterpieces of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Naxos Audiobooks The Diary of Samuel Pepys, Volume II: 1664−1666
9 781843 798415
By Samuel Pepys Unabridged Read by Leighton Pugh, with David Timsonn
The Diary of Samuel Pepys is one of the most entertaining documents in English history. Written between 1660 and 1669, as Pepys was establishing himself as a key administrator in the Navy Office, it is an intimate portrait of life in 17th-century England, covering his professional and personal activities, including, famously, his love of music, theatre, food, wine and his peccadilloes. This Naxos AudioBooks production is the world-premiere recording of the diary in its entirety. It has been divided into three volumes. Volume II covers some of the most famous passages in the diary. Pepys was there, in London, during the terrible Plague of 1665. And he was there during the Great Fire of London the following year, playing an active role in the actual event and the aftermath. The Last Chronicle of Barset By Anthony Trollope Unabridged Read by David Shaw-Parker
9 781843 798903
In The Last Chronicle of Barset, Trollope concludes his saga of ecclesiastical life. At the heart of the novel is the plight of Josiah Crawley, a proud, impoverished clergyman who faces difficult legal circumstances. Caught amidst poverty, Josiah appears to have stolen a cheque and is forced to stand trial − despite the fact that he cannot remember its origins. To make matters worse, his daughter Grace desperately seeks the approval of Archdeacon Grantly, whose son she intends to marry. The Last Chronicle is a joyful end to the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Here Trollope skilfully weaves together plot threads and characters from earlier novels in the series and provides a fond farewell tour of his cherished diocese. Companion Titles
