Robert SCHUMANN (1810–1856) Carnaval

Boris Giltburg

Davidsbündlertänze • Papillons Boris Giltburg, Piano

The three works on this recording are collections of short pieces, strung together and forming a cohesive whole – a form which Schumann himself invented, developed and brought to perfection. Davidsbündlertänze (Dances of the League of David) was written after Schumann’s engagement to Clara Wieck, to whom he wrote, ‘If I have ever been happy at the piano, it was when I was composing these.’ Papillons (Butterflies) is the work of a youthful, unfettered imagination, and Carnaval is one of his most popular pieces, a display of both technique and emotion. Boris Giltburg, who took first prize at the 2013 Queen Elisabeth Competition, is one of today’s most exciting young pianists, lauded for his ‘massive and engulfing technique, supporting interpretations that glow with warmth and poetic commitment’ (Gramophone).

Pianist Boris Giltburg was born in 1984 in Moscow and has lived in Tel Aviv since early childhood. He began lessons with his mother at the age of five and went on to study with Arie Vardi. In 2013 he took first prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, having won second prize at the Rubinstein in 2011 and top prize at Santander back in 2002, and subsequently appearing across the globe. Notable debuts have included: South America tour 2002 (and every season since), Israel Philharmonic 2005, Indianapolis Symphony 2007, China tour 2007, BBC Proms 2010. 2012 saw the release of his acclaimed CD on Orchid Classics of Prokofiev’s War Sonatas, earning him a place on the shortlist for the critics’ award at the Classical Brits. He has appeared with leading conductors such as Alsop, Brabbins, De Waart, Dohnanyi, Entremont, Fedoseyev, Neeme Jaervi, Karabits, Krivine, Lintu, Petrenko, Saraste, Sokhiev and Tortelier.

Sales Points • These are some of the most popular of all Schumann’s solo piano works and have been multiply recording down the decades. Historic benchmarks for some, or all, of these three cycles include performers such as Arrau, Ashkenazy, Kempff, Richter, Cortot, Kissin and Solomon amongst many. There is a Naxos disc released in 1994 [8.550784] in which Jandó has recorded two of the pieces here; Carnaval and Papillons adding Kinderszenen not the Davidbündlertänze. Boris Giltburg, an international award-winning pianist (he won the very important Queen Elizabeth Competition in 2013), has committed himself to recording for Naxos, and is an avowed young exponent of the repertoire. He has written some notes for this release. Gramophone called a release of his, for another label, full of ‘massive and engulfing technique, supporting interpretations that glow with warmth and poetic commitment’.

Mario CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO (1895–1968) Concerto Italiano† Violin Concerto No. 2 ‘The Prophets’

Supplementary Promotional Materials

Tianwa Yang, Violin SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg Pieter-Jelle de Boer

Winner of the prestigious ECHO Klassik Best Newcomer Award 2014 for her Naxos recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concertos and called “an unquestioned master of the violin” (American Record Guide) who “rises above her competition” (Fanfare), Tianwa Yang has quickly established herself as a leading international performer and recording artist. She has performed under the baton of renowned conductors Marc Albrecht, JoAnn Falletta, Giancarlo Guerrero, Günther Herbig, Yoel Levi, Gerard Schwarz, Vassily Sinaisky amongst others. Most recently she released the complete Solo Sonatas by Eugene Ysaye which immediately won several awards. Of her previously released recordings of Pablo de Sarasate’s complete works for violin as an eight disc set, David Hurwitz of Classics Today calls Ms. Yang a “sensationally talented violinist,” while All Things Strings speaks of her “stunning effortless virtuosity” and “uncanny affinity for Spanish music “.

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco considered the 1924 Concerto Italiano to be his fi rst truly symphonic venture. This tuneful, fresh and transparently scored concerto here receives its world première recording. It was admired by the great violinist Jascha Heifetz, for whom the composer wrote his Concerto No. 2 ‘I Profeti’ (The Prophets), an impassioned work ‘of biblical character and inspiration’ with an almost cinematic sweep. The recipient of the coveted Echo Klassik award for her album of Mendelssohn’s two Violin Concertos [8.572662], Tianwa Yang is widely recognised as one of the outstanding rising stars on the world classical music scene. Sales Points • Jose Miguel Cueto has recorded the Concerto No.2, coupled with violin works by Guastavino and Respighi on Marquis 81407, released in 2009. The most famous recording – of very few ever made – is by Jascha Heifetz on RCA, reissued on a miscellaneous disc containing works by Karen Khachaturian, Howard Ferguson, and Jean Françaix. It can also be found in the vast Heifetz Edition (RCA box set). More to the point it can be found, coupled with Walton’s Concerto, on Naxos Historical 8.111367. In this new recording it’s played by much-admired young violinist Tianwa Yang whose record of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons on Naxos was admired and whose series of four single discs of Sarasate’s works for violin and orchestra on Naxos has earned great international acclaim.

Camille SAINT-SAËNS (1835–1921) Symphonies, Vol. 1 Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2

Marc Soustrot

Phaéton – Symphonic Poem

Malmö Symphony Orchestra • Marc Soustrot

Companion Titles

Precocious as a child, Camille Saint-Saëns was once known as the French Mendelssohn. The remarkably assured First Symphony, completed at the age of 17, was praised by Berlioz and Gounod at its first performance. The elegantly crafted Second Symphony defies convention not least by basing the first movement on a fugue, while the symphonic poem Phaéton skilfully brings this Greek mythological drama to life with stampeding horses, thunderbolts and a moving apotheosis. This is Volume 1 of 3 devoted to the five Saint-Saëns Symphonies.

Marc Soustrot was chief conductor and artistic director of the Orchestre Philharmonique des Pays de la Loire from 1976 to 1994, the Beethoven Orchesters Bonn from 1995 to 2003 as well as Het Brabants Orkest Eindhoven from 1996 to 2006 and in this period he built up a large repertoire that stretches from traditional to contemporary music. From the 2011/12 he took up the position as chief conductor of Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Sweden, and the collaboration is so successful that the orchestra has already prolonged his contract to 2017. Soustrot is considered a specialist in French orchestral literature; in his early career, he was also deeply involved in contemporary music, leading premieres of works by Claude Baliff, Alain Louvier and Maurice Ohana. Marc Soustrot has recorded several award-winning CD’s and in 2008 he was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.

Sales Points • The Malmö Symphony Orchestra has a highly distinguished track record in recordings, for instance in its Naxos set of Edvard Grieg’s orchestral music, of which ClassicsToday.com stated, “as with previous releases in this series, the performances are outstanding” (a 10/10 review of volume 6, 8.572403). Complete recordings of Saint-Saëns’s symphonies are rare, the only readily available cycle being the venerable 1970s cycle conducted by Jean Martinon. The prospect of this new three volume set, richly embellished with other orchestral works and conducted by acknowledged French music expert Marc Soustrot, will provide a welcome and popular alternative.

Alan HOVHANESS (1911–2000) Symphony No. 48 ‘Vision of Andromeda’† Prelude and Quadruple Fugue Soprano Saxophone Concerto*

Internationally recognized for his innovative programming and extensive catalogue of recordings, American conductor Gerard Schwarz serves as music director of the All-Star Orchestra and the Eastern Music Festival Orchestra and is conductor laureate of the Seattle Symphony. In his nearly five decades as a respected classical musician and conductor, Schwarz has received hundreds of honours and accolades including Emmy Awards, GRAMMY®nominations, ASCAP Awards and the Ditson Conductor’s Award. Greg Banaszak, one of today’s leading saxophonists, has performed with orchestras and in concert halls throughout the world. He serves as a voting member for the annual GRAMMY® Awards ceremony and is currently on the faculties of the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Case Western Reserve University.

Gerard Schwarz

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING

Alan Hovhaness’s remarkable legacy of 67 symphonies and hundreds of other works stands as a testimony to one of the most individual musical voices of the 20th century. Written when Hovhaness was 25, the Prelude and Quadruple Fugue represents not only his mastery of counterpoint but in its sweeping climactic form is also one of his most exciting works. The Soprano Saxophone Concerto is like a melodic tone poem or aria, and considered the most Romantic concerto Hovhaness ever wrote. “Inspired by the wonders and mysteries of astronomy” and appearing here in its première recording, the Symphony No. 48 ‘Vision of Andromeda’ expresses the vastness of this galaxy through giantmelodies, shimmering orchestral colors and a transcendent apotheosis.

Companion Titles

Sales Points • This outstanding release joins a growing collection of Alan Hovhaness’s remarkable symphonies as championed by Gerard Schwarz and the excellent Seattle Symphony, the Symphony No. 50 (8.559717), considered by The Buffalo News to be a work which “would, doubtless, be a hit for any concert hall where it was essayed.” This release not only presents a recording of Hovhaness’s virtually unknown Soprano Saxophone Concerto in a performance by Greg Banaszak with “the most beautiful and expressive of tones”, but also the première recording of the Symphony No. 48, a work with deep significance and of great importance to the composer. Not heard since its performance at the 1982 New World Festival in Miami, this is a symphony which will generate huge interest in the music press and be a ‘must have’ for every Hovhaness collector.

Isaac ALBÉNIZ (1860–1909) Piano Music, Vol. 7

12 Piezas características • Sonata No. 3 Hernán Milla, Piano

Hernán Milla

The seventh volume in this acclaimed series is devoted to two works of Albéniz’s early maturity. The 12 Piezas características is a cycle of exquisite miniatures encompassing a wide variety of styles, including the assimilation of Andalusian folk music into his own personal idiom, reminiscences of earlier greats such as Scarlatti and Chopin, and elements of nineteenth-century salon music. The work led Felipe Pedrell, the father of Spanish musical nationalism, to call Albéniz not only a superbly equipped pianist but a great composer as well. The romantic and virtuosic Piano Sonata No. 3 opens with a richly contrapuntal Allegretto, followed by a slow movement of the utmost delicacy in the manner of a romanza and concludes with a technically complex Allegro assai. Companion Titles

Sales Points • This is volume seven in this critically-admired series. It is devoted to the work of Albéniz’s early maturity – both works were written when he was around 28. The Piezas was particularly important as it was publically admired by Felipe Pedrell, the father of Spanish musical nationalism who prophesied a great career for Albeniz. The volumes of this series have been given to individual pianists. This sets it apart from the ongoing complete series, also issued on a discby-disc basis, performed by Miguel Baselga on BIS. He plays the Piezas on BIS 923 (released in 2000) coupled with Iberia Book 1. The Sonata No.3 is on BIS1243 released in 2003 coupled with Iberia Book 4. Pianist and harpsichordist Hernán Milla was born in Toledo in 1979. He studied in his native city with Ana María Sancho and Ludmil Angelov, then at the Madrid Conservatory with Guillermo González, who sparked his interest in Spanish music, particularly that of Isaac Albéniz. His discography includes 20th Century Spanish Music for Flute and Piano and Donde Nace La Luz, an album on which he also earned a songwriting credit and which was recognized by Cubadisco and the Latin GRAMMYS®. Hernán Milla has won first prizes and other awards in national and international competitions, both as a soloist (José Roca, Jacinto Guerrero and Jóvenes Artistas de Castilla- La Mancha competitions) and a chamber musician (Melartin Lied and Mirabent I Magrans competitions).

Federico MOMPOU (1893–1987) Complete Songs, Vol. 2 Becquerianas • Comptines

47313 31007 4

Playing Time 61:18

Companion Titles

Marta Mathéu, Soprano • Jordi Masó, Piano This second and final volume of Frederic Mompou’s complete songs features the cycle Becquerianas, one of his most ambitious and also one of his most diverse, with its unprecedented fusion of Andalusian folk-music, virtuosic piano writing and vocal opulence. Comptines, by comparison, are joyful and simple traditional children’s counting rhymes. Also included are five recently discovered songs: Et sento que véns, Ets l’infinit, El testament d’Amèlia, Ave María and El viaje definitivo. ‘… an enticing first offering in a welcome series, and the performers are warmly to be applauded’ (Fanfare on Volume 1 / 8.573099). Sales Points • Mompou is best remembered for his series of beautiful solo piano works composed from the 1920s until the 1980s. He died in 1987. These have been recorded by a number of pianists, most recently by Volodos – a disc that brought Mompou renewed attention that may spill over into his songs, which are much rarer to find on disc. This is the second and last volume of the complete cycles and single songs (the first volume was on 8.573099). Coincidentally a disc that replicates a number of the songs in volume 2 has just been released by Opus Arte featuring Roger Padullés and Iain Burnside. The difference is that our disc is sung by a soprano. It also has the advantage of Jordi Masó, a critically-acclaimed specialist in Spanish piano music whose 6 volumes of the solo piano music have won great critical reviews. Marta Mathéu was taught by Montserrat Caballé, Helena Obratzova, Nelly Miricioiu, Isabel Penagos, Carmen Bustamante, Miguel Zanetti, Robert Expert, François Le Roux and Wolfram Rieger. She has won awards in several international contests and festivals, and has a wide repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music. She made her operatic début in 2008 during the Salzburg Mozart Festival in Le Nozze di Figaro and has recorded for the Klassicat, Brilliant and Opus Arte record labels. Jordi Masó has won first prizes in many national and international competitions in Spain and has performed extensively in most European countries in piano recitals and in chamber music concerts. He has recorded over forty discs, acclaimed by the most important publications. His recordings include the 1993 world première recording of the complete works for piano of Roberto Gerhard, six discs with the complete piano music by Frederic Mompou, as well as the complete piano works of Joaquín Turina and Déodat de Séverac.

From the dawning of the Renaissance the first successful programmatic works appeared from Susato, Dowland and Biber. But it was the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that witnessed a true flourishing, when composers utilised the full resources of contemporary symphonism to evoke the tumult of battle. Later the medium of film, notably those produced in Hollywood, brought with it colourful and gripping scores.

Lou KOSTER (1889-1973) Suite dramatique

Ouverture légère • Waltz Suites Estro Armonico Jonathan Kaell

A native of Luxembourg, Lou Koster was largely self-taught as a composer, flourishing in the inter-war period as a pianist whose activities included accompanying silent films. Orchestrated from piano originals, pieces such as Lore-Lore and Moselträume became radio hits in the 1930s, and she became renowned for subtle, sensuous sounding light music filled with boldness, unexpected turns and emotional nuances. Forgotten since the 1960s and only recently rediscovered, Lou Koster’s scores are musically authentic and unspoiled, bubbling over with an irrepressible joy of music making. Sales Points • Lou Koster’s orchestral work was thought to have been lost, but by making use of performance material only recently discovered this release is a major coup, presenting première modern recordings of pieces which were once the darlings of the broadcast airways in the 1930s. Performed by Luxembourg’s leading chamber orchestra Estro Armonico, this fine recording revives a special part of the soundtrack to the distinctive and fashionable Art Deco era. Patric STANDFORD (1939-2014) Symphony No. 1 ‘The Seasons’

Cello Concerto* • Prelude to a Fantasy (The Naiades) Raphael Wallfisch, Cello* Royal Scottish National Orchestra • David Lloyd-Jones

Patric Standford wrote in a wide variety of forms, from large-scale orchestral and choral music to a cappella, chamber and instrumental pieces. While teaching at the Guildhall School of Music in London he won several major international composition prizes. The First Symphony, each movement of which is named after a season, grew from a string piece conceived as a memorial for the conductor Sir John Barbirolli. Dedicated to and premièred by the soloist on this recording, Raphael Wallfisch, the powerful Cello Concerto is built around a theme from the fifth movement, Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit (You now are sorrowful) of Brahms’ German Requiem.

Playing Time: 69:56 7

Sales Points • This is another in the series of previously issued discs on the British Music Society label. This one is ex-BMS441CD, and Naxos is now issuing them on its label. Standford died in 2014 and much of his music is unrecorded. He was an important figure in British music, chairman of the Composers’ Guild of Great Britain. On its original appearance the disc received favourable reviews. ‘Standford’s music has been extremely well served by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and that doughty champion of unfamiliar British music, David LloydJones. Ferdinand RIES (1784-1838) Three Sonatas for Violin and Piano

Sonata in F, Op. 8, No. 1 • Sonata in C minor, Op. 8, No. 2 Grande Sonata in F Minor, Op. 19 Eric Grossman, Violin • Susan Kagan, Piano

Ferdinand Ries was Beethoven’s student, close friend and biographer. He was a gifted and prolific composer whose works, like those of many other composers of his time, were largely overshadowed by Beethoven’s presence. Ries’s music was widely known and admired in his lifetime, and his 18 Violin Sonatas are models of the Viennese Classical style established by Mozart. The pastoral character of the first Sonata, Op. 8 is enlivened through the unusual appearance of a fugue, while the second of the pair features a lovely, serene Adagio cantabile. The large-scale drama of the Grande Sonata, Op. 19 links it to Beethoven’s Appassionata. Sales Points • This release of Violin Sonatas by Ferdinand Ries joins pianist Susan Kagan’s acclaimed recordings of that composer’s complete Piano Sonatas, volume 4 (8.572299) of which led a Fanfare critic to state that “Susan Kagan’s ongoing Ries series for Naxos is one of that company’s finest-ever endeavors.” Violinist Eric Grossman’s pedigree as a widely acclaimed recitalist, chamber music performer CUBADISCO award winner is also beyond question. Ries’s 18 Violin Sonatas are virtually unknown on recordings, a gap Grossman and Kagan’s work aims to fill. 8.573193

Douglas LILBURN (1915-2001) String Quartet in E minor Phantasy Quartet† • Canzonettas Duos for Two Violins • String Trio New Zealand String Quartet †

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING

This recording of Douglas Lilburn’s complete string chamber music celebrates the centenary of his birth, and is crowned by a world première recording of the Phantasy Quartet which won the Cobbett Prize at the Royal College of Music in 1939. On his return from studies in London to Christchurch in 1940 Lilburn embarked upon a prolific and varied period of creativity. This included the String Quartet in E minor, notable for its intense yet supple lyric power, the three Canzonettas, quasi-Elizabethan in tone as befits their tie to incidental music he wrote for Ngaio Marsh’s productions of Shakespeare’s plays in Christchurch, and the Schubert-influenced String Trio.

Sales Points • We have had remarkable successes with Douglas Lilburn, with his Orchestral Music (8.557697) made a Gramophone ‘Editor’s Choice’ and considered “an engaging follow-up to this team's admirable anthology devoted to the three Lilburn Symphonies (8.555862)”. This in turn was summed up as “splendid” by the Penguin Guide. The reputation of the New Zealand String Quartet also precedes it, with their acclaimed cycle of the quartets of Mendelssohn praised by Gramophone for the “deep feeling” of its playing on Volume 1 (8.570001) and for “what promises to be an outstanding set” (Vol. 2, 8.570002). © Chris Stock

Trained by Mozart and Haydn, Johann Nepomuk Hummel enjoyed the highest reputation as a composer and virtuoso performer of his day. His piano trios are characterised by their richness of sonority, good humour and flowing melodic inventiveness. While the influence of Beethoven can be heard, Hummel’s own creative voice is highly distinctive. The early Piano Trio, Op. 12 exudes the atmosphere of Vienna at the turn of the 19th century, and the Grand Trio is a concerto in all but name, the demands on the pianist expressly designed for its dedicatee Johann Baptist Cramer.

Simon MAYR (1763-1845) Jacob a Labano fugiens (Jacob’s Flight from Laban)

Siri Karoline Thornhill • Andrea Lauren Brown, Sopranos Gunhild Lang-Alsvik • Katharina Ruckgraber, Sopranis Julie Comparini, Mezzo-soprano Simon Mayr Chorus and Ensemble Theona Gubba-Chkheidze, Concert-master Franz Hauk Bavarian-born Simon Mayr spent much of his life in Italy where he promoted Viennese classical composition but also absorbed much from his studies in Bergamo and Venice. Though he was one of the most admired operatic composers of his day – he taught Donizetti, who revered him – he was particularly noted for his sacred oratorios. Jacob’s Flight from Laban is marked by his characteristically vibrant musical palette, with important writing for wind instruments, operaticallybased arias and confidently-handled ensembles and choruses. Franz Hauk is Mayr’s leading interpreter and acclaimed for his many recordings. ‘The music, performances, and recording are all first rate; unconditionally recommended.’ (Fanfare on Il sagrifizio di Jefte / Naxos 8.572719-20)

Sales Points • This is the latest in Naxos’ sequence of the oratorios of Simon Mayr, and again it is directed by the composer’s greatest champion and the man who (with his ensemble) has brought Mayr to prominence on disc; Franz Hauk. Jacob’s Flight from Laban is a vibrant, richly characterised work typical of Mayr’s operatic-oratorio writing of the time. It will especially appeal to those who have collected the previously released oratorio discs. Hauk’s recordings of David [8.570752-53], The Marriage of Tobias [8.570752-53] and Il sagrifizio di Jefte [8.572719-20] have all been very well received internationally. Companion Titles

Salvador BROTONS (b. 1959) Music for Wind Band Symphony No. 6 ‘Concise’† Rebroll • Obstinancy • Glosa de l’Emigrant Barcelona Symphonic Band (Banda Municipal de Barcelona) Salvador Brotons †

WORLD PREMIÈRE RECORDING

The acclaimed conductor and composer Salvador Brotons is renowned for his music for symphonic band. It was Rebroll (Rebirth), a symphonic poem in one movement inspired by contemporary events, which first earned him international recognition, and is performed worldwide. Symphony No. 6 ‘Concise’ charts a dramatic course between rhythmic dynamism, ceremonial grandeur and lyrical intimacy. Glosa de l’Emigrant is a nostalgic song cast as a sardana, the national dance of Catalonia, and features the beautiful sound of the tenora, a Catalan folk instrument. Brotons’ Symphony No. 5 and his Oboe Concerto can be heard on 8.573163.

Sales Points • The Barcelona-born Spanish composer Salvador Brotons is much admired internationally for his music for symphonic band. The Symphony No.6 is a dramatic and dynamic work written in 2011 and Rebroll is the work that launched him internationally. It’s now played by the world’s leading symphonic bands. The Catalan folk instrument, the tenora, is featured on the richly nostalgic Glosa de l’Emigrant. Brotons’ earlier symphony, No.5, coupled with the Oboe Concerto, is on 8.573163. Albany has released Symphonic Movement No.7 on a mixed program shared with other composers. His chamber music – including a Cello Sonata – has also been recorded but his large-scale pieces, apart from those on Naxos, are rare on disc. His music is vivid and exciting.

4 Inventions for English Horn and Percussion Wind Quartet

30099 72271 1

Emili Pascual • Camerata Barcekiba Ferrán Armengol • Eufonia Ensemble • Salvador Brotons The admired Argentinian composer Osias Wilenski, only piano pupil of the legendary virtuoso Simon Barere, has pursued a full and varied life in the arts. His earlier music was marked by experimentalism, and even aggression, but the works here reflect his desire to pursue lyricism and accessibility. A gifted melodist, he imbues each of the pieces with great character and rich sonority. The Oboe Concerto embodies lyric, sometimes folkloric, and humorous elements whilst Inventions and the Wind Quartet reveal his exciting rhythmic writing allied to a highly imaginative sense of colour.

Playing Time: 50:38

Sales Points • Osias Wilenksi, is now in his mid-70s and has moved from a more experimental position to a much more accessible one. His music has been championed by Novona who have devoted discs to his music, especially 5824, released in 2010, which contained the Quartet No.2, Triptych and Diversions for three trombones. Novona 5837, released later in the same year, included Movements for flute, and Romances for clarinet and piano amongst other smaller pieces. The works on our disc mark his return to the guiding principles of lyricism, colour and warmth and are attractive examples of his art.

Naxos AudioBooks Adam Bede

By George Eliot Unabridged Read by Georgina Sutton

9 781843 797838

George Eliot’s first full-length novel, Adam Bede, is a profound rendering of 19th-century English pastoral life. This timeless story of seduction and betrayal follows the virtuous carpenter Adam Bede, whose world is soon disrupted when the all-too-beautiful Hetty betrays him for another villager. Her actions precipitate a turmoil of tragic events that shake the very foundations of their serene rural community. Eliot’s gift for leisurely and lyrical prose is in full effect here and her insight into human emotion and complexity is unrivalled. Companion Titles
