One of the last great personalities of Hamburg and Hanseatic musical life disappeared from the scene when, five days after his death, Matthias Weckmann was buried on 1 March 1674 in Hamburg’s Jacobikirche. Christoph Bernhardt (1627-1692) was Cantor in Hamburg’s principal church from 1663-1674 and Weckmann’s closest friend; he evaluated Hamburg’s musical future after Weckmann’s death as follows: “The art of music will now decrease as much as it had increased in the last fourteen years in this place. In the future one will not go to upright people to ask one’s favours, and any such favour received will be seen more as proof of a man’s cleverness. Just as the harmonious art of music is lessened by the departure of men who were capable of preserving it, so will it be with the regiment of the fair town of Hamburg; this I can see in the comportment of our young people who hope to join the regiment in the future. We will experience this within the next twenty years”.

Bernhardt’s remarks are worthy of note in more than one respect. This is not simply a real and exact assessment of the political changes in the Hanseatic City of Hamburg for the next twenty years, but it is also a pessimistic forecast for any further musical development in the future. Indeed, the only musician left in Hamburg who retained any eminence outside the City borders was Johann Adam Reinken; the great flowering of Hamburg’s musical culture that had come from the Praetorius, Scheidermann, Schop

and Selle families and the corresponding increase in numbers of outstanding musicians had now withered.

Front the point of view of contemporary writers, this flowering reached its climax first in Weckmann’s and then in Bernhardt’s work, not just in the regular joint organisation of the services in the Jacobikirche, where Weckmann served as organist and church clerk, but above all in the Collegium Musicum, an organisation that Weckmann had founded in 1660. This was clearly not a public organisation of musicians in the modern sense, but rather an ensemble that was supported by the highest of social circles, and one that was to a very great extent experimental; there the newest styles of composition and compositions (Italian and German above all) and performance practices were brought to the ears of an interested public of both professionals and amateurs. Performances of both sacred and secular works took place, some of which were commissioned especially for this purpose from composers and their courts and which were then transcribed; several of these works were written by Weckmann himself.

Matthias Weckmann was born in either 1615 or 1616 in Niederdorla, a small town near Mühlhausen in Thuringia. He was the son of the parish priest, a man who was also active in literary circles. Little is known of Matthias’youth and nothing at all is known about the beginning of his musical training; we know only that his father took him to continue his musical studies in what was probably 1628 to Dresden, the seat of the Elector of Saxony’s court. Court Kapellmeister Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) was the most eminent court musician of his time and was then working in Dresden; Schütz was to set out that same year on his second journey to Italy, during which time he probably

met Claudio Monteverdi. After his return in 1629, Schütz took personal charge of Weckmann’s training, for he had until then been marked out for a singer’s career.

Weckmann’s short career as a singer has been documented thanks to his participation as a soloist in the Court choir under Schütz in the music that was provided for the meeting of the Protestant Elector with King Gustav Adolf of Sweden in Leipzig in April 1631.

At this time the consequences of the Thirty Years’War began to affect Weckmann’s life.

Saxony, the most important Protestant (i.e. Lutheran) state in Germany, was governed by its hard-hunting and heavy-drinking Elector Johann Georg I, who hitherto had been at the side of the Habsburg Kaiser Ferdinand II; Ferdinand was trying to ensure that the Counter-Reformation would win the day. After the King of Sweden had returned successful from the wars in 1632, the Kaiser demanded the return of all his former Catholic possessions and the Elector began to feel like a cat on a hot tin roof. The above meeting in Leipzig was then arranged between all the Protestant powers, but not even this assembly could prevent the battling troops from marching through Saxony. The political and commercial situation became progressively more difficult, and a period of many long years of financial problems now began for the Court musicians, a time that was characterised above all by ever-greater cuts in the musicians’pay. Given the above, special proof of Weckmann’s great capabilities was given when the Elector awarded him a monthly bursary regardless and in addition even paid it! Weckmann used the money to study organ in Hamburg with Jacob Praetorius (?-1651), one of the greatest organists of his day and who had studied with Sweelinck. The rich trading town was ruled by an

oligarchy of merchant families and benefited from an extensive musical life, especially in the fields of church music and music for city ceremonies. The organists of the principal churches demanded exceptionally high salaries and enjoyed a high social reputation.

Schütz himself introduced Weckmann to Praetorius on his way to Denmark and thus took him from war to safety. After three years, during which time Weckmann had also been able to appreciate Scheidemann’s talents as organist, Weckmann’s first period in Hamburg came to an end. He did not, however, remain long in Dresden after his return, for Schütz, who had said that he had ‘left his best musical ideas’ behind at the Danish Court, was not granted permission by the Elector to go and collect them personally.

Weckmann instead was sent on the path North; a good opportunity for the twentyyear-old to get to know the music-loving Danish Court after the city of music that was Hamburg.

The Danish King Christian IV created little that was positive in his country’s foreign policy, and indeed wars that were led by him would in the end be unsuccessful; in contrast to the Elector of Saxony, however, ho was both ready and able to invest sums of money in both art and music. This stay in Denmark was only to be an intermezzo for Weckmann, for he was obliged to return to Dresden.

At the end of 1638 the marriage of the Elector’s heir to a Brandenburg princess was celebrated; the occasion of what was an important political event in relation to the Thirty Years’war was of course based around the Elector’s Court. Weckmann was serving as organist there, but he was also obliged to serve the Elector at table. Weckmann

was named organist to the Electoral Court in September 1641 and from the following year gave lessons in singing and organ at Schütz’s instigation. The year 1642 was the third year that the musicians’salary payments had been reduced; the King of Denmark’s request for the loan of Heinrich Schütz and the best musicians of the Court Orchestra to play for the double wedding of the King’s daughters in November 1642 could not therefore have come at a better time. Weckmann was to stay in Denmark for several years and gained great respect there, the fruitful exchanges with other musicians, the music-loving atmosphere at Court as well as the relatively war-free air (except for the war between Sweden and Denmark in the 1640s) all combined to made Denmark a paradise for Weckmann in comparison with Dresden.

Weckmann was recalled by the Saxon court in 1646, but travel passes were drawn up once again for him in 1647 - he was to accompany the Elector’s heir and his court on a journey to Karlsbad. During the journey to Karlsbad, Weckmann was to finish a volume of copies of Monteverdi’s and other works in Hamburg. The Danish Crown Prince died while travelling near Dresden on 1 July 1647 and the idea easily suggested itself that Weckmann should return with the mourning party to Denmark, especially since he was scarcely needed in Saxony; the Danish Crown Prince was the brother-in-law of the Elector of Saxony, and, as part of State mourning, organ and instrumental music had been forbidden there until the end of the year.

During his stay in the North, Weckmann married Regina Beute, the daughter of a town musician in Lübeck in 1648; his best man was Franz Tunder, the organist of

the Marienkirche. On his return to Dresden Weckmann was named ‘Inspector’of the Electoral Musical Chapel, and in August of the same year Christoph Bernhard was engaged as “musician and singer” for the Court. A lifelong friendship and collaboration was to develop between the two musicians. Shortly afterwards Johann Jacob Froberger (1616-1667), the Kaiser’s organist and harpsichordist, arrived in Dresden; he had heard Weckmann’s praises sung at the Imperial court and wanted to take the opportunity to get to know him. The Elector suggested a contest between the two, which Weckmann won; Weckmann also won Froberger’s recognition and long-lasting friendship, which was to lead to exchanges of letters and music. For the local musicians in the Court Chapel at least, there remained the need to survive ongoing financial problems, although it was not until 1655 that Weckmann decided to seek an independent position: one in the Jacobikirche in Hamburg. Weckmann had been invited by connections in Hamburg that were well-disposed towards him to apply for the post; he obtained leave of absence under a pretext and played an audition that was superb beyond all measure for the critical ears of Scheidemann, Schop, Selle and Johann Praetorius, the brother of his earlier teacher Jacob Praetorius. The Hamburg City Council then asked the Elector of Saxony to release Weckmann so that he might come to Hamburg. Weckmann moved to Hamburg, where he was not just organist in the Jacobikirche and its sister church of St. Gertrud, but was also the church clerk for the two churches. This office was a type of supervisor of the church records, and Weckmann was to occupy it until the end of 1670.

Weckmann’s time in Hamburg seems to have gone by quietly, characterised by his

activities as organist and by the founding of the Collegium Musicum. He seems to have had few pupils despite his renown; Jacob Kortkamp was one of his pupils and was also to become Weckmann’s first reliable biographer. In his family and amongst his friends it was in the nature of things that there should be deaths as the years went by, with, besides a high child mortality rate, Weckmann’s first wife in 1665, his brother Andreas in 1662, Heinrich Scheidemann and Thomas Selle as a result of the plague in 1663/1664, and Froberger in 1667. Weckmann bought a family grave in 1664, directly under the organ that be placed in the Jacobikirche.

Weckmann’s last years from 1671 seem to have been marked by exhaustion; he was no longer able to continue his functions as church record-keeper, although be seems to have fulfilled his duties as organist until the end.

Sacred Works This recording comprises the complete sacred works by Matthias Weckmann. Two of the most important collections of music from that period — the famous Düben collection in Uppsala and the Bokemeyer collection in Berlin — are amongst the libraries that possess the autographs of these cantatas, although the only known autograph manuscripts

by Weckmann that have been preserved are in the Ratsbücherei in Lüneburg. These manuscripts are dated 1663 and contain four cantatas that are particularly striking both in their quality and in the high level of emotion that they contain; these are the cantatas Weine nicht, Zion spricht, Herr, wenn ich nur dich habe and Wie liegt die Stadt so wüste.

It is, however, remarkable that these pieces allow us to discern not just the stylistic unity of the composer’s work but also to appreciate the variety of genres in which he wrote.

Anyone who listens to this recording will certainly be struck by several very modern aspects of the harmonic language. Weckmann uses chords that were greatly daring for his time and a chromatic language that gives great tension to his writing. He goes so far with his effects that he marked NB (Nota Bene) on the score in several places to point out to the musicians that the dissonance thus marked is a conscious effect, even if it might seem outside the normal rules of harmony.

We have observed the order of the pieces as they appear in their sole and possibly autograph manuscript. The four works from the Lüneburg library seem to form a real cycle of cantatas, although the term cantata is not strictly correct. Weckmann was

undoubtedly influenced by works in the Italian style by Schütz and other composers and he gave these works the title Concerto. The works are numbered and two of them are dated: Zion spricht is dated 9 February 1663 and Wie liegt die Stadt is dated 15 August 1663, although the marking 14 October 1663 appears at the end of this score, indicating perhaps the date that the piece was finished. It seems therefore likely that this particularly advanced composition was written during that time. What is more, the first date is preceded by the words cum JESU bono; it is highly likely that Weckmann felt a need for God’s help to be able to finish this piece, for the plague had devastated Hamburg that year. The remarkable choice of texts seems to be linked to these painful circumstances; in spite of his suffering, the Christian soul retains his trust in God, from whom he asks consolation and eternal life.

Many aspects of these four ‘Concerti’ are worthy of note. They use a relatively large group of instruments (2 or 3 violins, 3 viole da gamba and continuo), long independent sections that act as introductions or as ritornelli between the sung verses being given to these instruments. These ritornelli are, however, written in a highly expressive manner that dialogues directly with the text, especially in Concerti I and IV. The instruments also accompany the voices, giving the whole work an even greater dimension. Weine nicht is undoubtedly the most impressive work in this respect; two long sinfonie precede the alto and bass recitatives before the martial music that characterises the words “es hat überwunden der Löwe vom Stamm Juda” is begun in a third section. The Amen is written to a typical ostinato passage in the Italian ciaccona style, a style of writing

that can be found in many works from the beginning of the 17 century, works by Monteverdi included.

Amongst the various instrumental effects, we should also note the rare perfection of the passages in which the instruments weave a superb counterpoint around the solo voice; this is particularly remarkable in the music set to the words “Kann auch ein leibliche Mutter” in Concerto II. In terms of musical expression, Wie liegt die Stadt is certainly a high point in Weckmann’s output. Weckmann is clearly demonstrating what he had learnt from the Italian madrigal style in his work, and it is enough to hear the soprano lament that evokes the deserted town with such emotion at the start of the cantata. This effect will be all the more impressive if the performers follow the composer’s instructions in the score and organise themselves so that the soprano is well distanced from the bass; this theatrical effect is only really possible in concert conditions, but one can well imagine the effect that this distant voice would have. If we associate such effects with Weckmann’s knowledge of the madrigal style, we must also recognise that Weckmann also knew, undoubtedly through Christoph Bernhard, of the art of Italian vocal style, as we can see in “Sie weinet des Nachts” with its ornaments and its repeated notes in the style of the Italian trillo. All these influences, however, are used to heighten the emotion of the music; listen to the arioso passage “Euch sage ich” for the Vox Christi (bass) with its string accompaniment and to the poignant invocation of sinful “Jerusalem in Jerusalem hat sich versündiget.”

Italian models can also be found in other works and in the two sacred dialogues (Dialogue of Tobias and Rachel, Dialogue of the Annunciation) in particular. We may

well imagine the enthusiasm with which Christoph Bernhardt must have described his meeting with Carissimi to Weckmann.

Even though we do not possess any accurate way of dating Weckmann’s works, it is, however, possible to make certain suppositions. The quality of the vocal and instrumental writing and the richness of the harmonic language allow us to think that Wenn der Herr and Kommet her zu mir alle belong to the works that Weckmann composed during his full maturity in Hamburg; the four Concerti also date from this period. The other cantatas are perhaps older; the two Latin works are much simpler in style with small ritornelli inserted between the verses, these having neither the force, the imagination, nor the exotic harmonies of the other cantatas. The same is true of the music set to the verses themselves. On the other hand, the cantata on St. Michael Es erhub sich ein Streit shows us a completely different aspect of Weckmann’s work; we now see Weckmann as Schütz’s disciple, with a triple choir being used: a large four-part choir, a five-part solo choir or Favorit Chor and an instrumental choir consisting of two violins, three trombones and continuo. This is the same majestic style that Schütz used in his Psalmen Davids (1619) and is one of the most convincing results of his assimilation of the Venetian polychoral style.We would like to thank Mr. Ibo Ortgies for all his valuable advice and for his collaboration on this recording.

Keyboard Works Matthias Weckmann was undoubtedly one of the principal figures of German musical th life in the first part of the 17 century. Born in Thuringia, his career led him to Dresden, to the Danish Court, to Lübeck and finally to Hamburg where he became the resident organist of the Jakobikirche. Heinrich Schütz and the organist Jacob Praetorius both deserve to be mentioned amongst his teachers, whilst his biography relates that he had the chance of knowing an impressive quantity of musicians, including Tunder, Scheidemann, Bernhardt, Selle and Froberger. His contacts with Froberger were clearly of great importance, as we shall see as we discuss the music on this recording.

Both musicians were the same age; we do not know the exact date of their meeting, but it must have taken place after Weckmannn’s return from Lübeck where he was married in 1648 and before his departure for Hamburg in 1655. Recent studies date it before February 1650. Johann Jakob Froberger had already spent several years in Rome at this time and had been taught by Frescobaldi. On a second visit to Rome shortly before 1649 he had undoubtedly been in contact with Carissimi.

Froberger’s visit to Dresden came at a particularly complicated period of his life; it is probable that such a long period of travel was also linked to a diplomatic mission entrusted to him by the Emperor. Several precise dates mark this period; Brussels in 1650, Paris in 1652 (where he met Louis Couperin, Chambonnières, Gallot and

Denis Gaultier), and London, where he wrote his Plainte faite à Londres pour passer le Mélancolie (sic).

It would be interesting to know where he obtained his perfect knowledge of French style and of its Suites and whether this came about before or after his Parisian visit, as his “recital” in Dresden included various Suites in its programme.

The meeting between Froberger and Weckmann at the Dresden court was related in detail by Johan Mattheson in 1740. The Prince Elector of Saxony wanted the two musicians to vie in a type of competition, but he nevertheless took care to ask Weckmann to display his talents modestly so as not to outdo the Emperor’s organist! Froberger played several pieces from his repertoire, including Toccatas, Capriccios, Ricercars and Suites, whilst Weckmann’s answer was a long improvisation on one of the themes played

by Froberger. The two musicians then proceeded to become good friends. It would seem clear that this confrontation allowed Weckmann to adopt many new styles of keyboard music, and more specifically those taken from works for harpsichord in particular. We should not, however, let ourselves be carried away by this story; we ought not to forget that Weckmann had also inherited the Northern German organ tradition, and thus also that of Sweelinck. What is more, his knowledge of the French style seems to have been th much more influenced by the art of the lutenists of the beginning of the 17 century than by that of harpsichordists such as Louis Couperin in the middle of the century.

The programme of this recording brings together the complete works for harpsichord

by Weckmann. As in Froberger’s works and in those of his teacher Frescobaldi, certain

compositions intended for keyboards only without pedals could be considered both for harpsichord and for organ. We have also judged it important to allot certain pieces to th the clavichord, the use of which was extremely common during the 17 century. From a formal and stylistic viewpoint, it is striking that Weckmann constructs these several pieces in greatly varying ways, clearly demonstrating the many influences that marked his apprenticeship.

We should first of all note that in the suites (although the appellation “suite” appears nowhere in the manuscripts) the dances are arranged in an unusual order, with the gigue sometimes appearing as the second dance immediately after the Allemande. The double of the Sarabande of the Suite in C minor is once more highly typical of the lutenist style.

The Toccatas display greatly contrasting styles. Each corresponds to a particular scheme: the Toccata in C is a relatively continuous development in a brilliant atmosphere, whilst the Toccata in A minor never ceases to surprise us and clearly refers back to a model of Frescobaldi’s. The Toccata in E major seems more instrumental in style with its virtuoso passages that can be linked to the «stylus fantasticus» that J.S. Bach discovered during his periods in Hamburg and Lübeck. Other toccatas are constructed more clearly in separate sections; this is the case with the Toccata in E minor in which, after a passage in free style, a fugue develops which is in turn followed by an imitative piece in the style of a Canzona. This is also the case with the Toccata vel Praeludium, containing as it does a long fugal passage in its centre and for which the alternative title of Praeludium confirms the influence of Sweelinck’s organ school.

The Canzonas are also highly varied in type. They consist of several sections of imitative

writing that are sometimes concluded with a short passage in freer style. In the Italian tradition, each section is written in a different rhythmic proportion, either binary or ternary.

We must nevertheless set aside a special place for the Canzona in C minor whose three parts are based on the same thematic motif treated in three different ways, the central part using the gigue rhythm; it is in a way a blending of the spirit of the canzona with that of variation technique.

Weckmann’s harpsichord works also contain two pieces that can be considered as themes with variations (following the example of the German Partita style). Lucindor is clearly linked to the variation style of Sweelinck, whilst the variations on Die lieblichen Blicke th clearly presage the partita style of the second half of the 17 century. The second variation is typically a double with is themes in semiquavers, whilst the third develops the theme in a ternary rhythm.

In his vocal works as in his sonatas, even though Weckmann appears as an attentive th observer of the styles that influenced musical composition at the start of the 17 century, he is also one of the principal creators of that great tradition that would culminate in the masters of Buxtehude’s generation and in the teachers of J.S. Bach.

Chamber music Matthias Weckmann’s body of work contains not only keyboard pieces (harpsichord and organ) but also several chamber works. These ten sonatas form a very special group of works, in that eight of them are written for four obbligato parts, these being cornettino (a small cornet in D), violin, bassoon, trombone, and continuo. The manuscripts also suggest alternatives for the trombone and the bassoon, with a viola (viola da braccio) replacing the trombone and a bombard replacing the bassoon. The two remaining sonatas are trios for cornettino, violin and continuo.

This instrumentation is highly individual, although we should nevertheless note that these four instruments are those that were most common in Italian churches from th the end of the 16 century onwards. This type of ensemble was also used by certain composers of Italian origin who were working in Austria and Southern Germany in the th ďŹ rst quarter of the 17 century. These included Biagio Marini in Neuburg, Giovanni Valentini and Marc-Antonio Ferro in Vienna, as well as the local composers who studied with them, such as Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and Johann-Joseph Fux. The four instrumental parts are treated as equal solo parts in all the above works. It is probable that it was Froberger who introduced Weckmann to the above type of instrumentation.

Weckmann settled finally in Hamburg in 1655, where he was employed by the Jacobikirche, and founded the Collegium Musicum there with Christoph Bernhardt in

The Songs Weckmann’s secular works include not only these sonatas but also several small-scale songs composed for specific occasions; each one is dedicated to a particular person from

1660. This musical institution brought together both musicians and audiences that were interested in a style of performing that was highly evolved if not experimental. Both sacred and secular music was played, with the most recent works of not only German but also Italian composers being played. We may well suppose that the performers of the Collegium Musicum were chosen from the most renowned virtuosi of the city.

All these sonatas follow the same form; they all possess several slow and fast sections that are often linked together and that include many passages in imitative style in which all the instruments carry an equal share of the musical load. The homophonic passages allow the creation of fine harmonic contrasts that are also very expressive as well as majestic ensembles that can almost be seen as musical «battles».

The trio sonatas are of more modest dimensions. We have taken advantage of a manuscript indication of an alternate instrumentation to allot one of these sonatas to two violins and viola da gamba. In accordance with the possibilities and practices of the period we have allotted the continuo to several instruments, to the theorbo, harpsichord, and organ. We have also made use of a regal, given that there are many proofs of its use in Northern German churches of the period.

Matthias Weckmannn occupies a unique place in German music of the 17th century: his vocal works have an extraordinary power of expression, whilst his instrumental music uses skilful compositional techniques, is appealing to the ear and is also extremely taxing to play. His organ music is even more remarkable: situated between the generation of Jacob Praetorius and Heinrich Scheidemann on one side and the generation of Johann Adam Reinken at Dietrich Buxtehude on the other, Weckmannn stands out not only because of the variety of his expression and affects, the weight of his discourse and the richness of his counterpoint but also because of his strong theological grounding and a speculative element that links him just as much to the great polyphonic composers of the end of the Renaissance as it does to Johann Sebastian Bach and his final works.

Matthias Weckmannn was considered to be one of the greatest masters of the organ while he was still alive and continued to be so regarded until the middle of the following century. His work has not yet received the recognition that it deserves: the majority of th 20 century musicologists either did not know it or had a very limited understanding of it. Despite splendid recent musicological research into Weckmannn’s music by (1) Hans Davidsson as well as his performances of it, Weckmannn’s music remained infrequently played by organists and practically unknown to the general public.

Biographical notes Matthias Weckmannn was born in Thuringia in 1616. His father, a Lutheran pastor, sent him to study with Heinrich Schütz in Dresden at the age of twelve. Schütz sent him to finish his training in Hamburg with Jacob Praetorius II, one of Sweelinck’s most renowned pupils, in 1633. Johann Mattheson reported one century later that, after having studied with Jacob Praetorius on Schütz’s recommendation, that Weckmannn had been led to ‘temper Praetorius’ serious approach with Scheidemann’s charm and introduce many pleasing inventions in so doing’ (Grundlage einer EhrenPforte, Hamburg 1740).

Weckmannn returned to Dresden in 1636 and was appointed organist of the Elector’s Chapel as well as a member of the Kurprinzliche Kapelle. He then spent a period of time in Denmark as organist to the Danish court before being recalled to Dresden in 1647. He married Regina Beute in Lübeck in 1648; Franz Tunder was the bridegroom’s witness.

He was invited to pit himself against the celebrated Johann Jacob Froberger, the Emperor’s harpsichordist, in concert in Dresden in 1650. Froberger declared at the end of the concert that Weckmannn was a true virtuoso; this concert marked the beginning of a long friendship between the two musicians.

Weckmannn was appointed organist of the Jakobikirche in Hamburg in 1655 after a public audition for the post; his pupil Johannes Kortkamp has left a detailed account of the event.

‘When it was his turn to play, he improvised on the full organ in the tone of the subject of the set fugue, that is to say in the first tone, although he blended this with the third tone most splendidly. He then set to work on the chorale An Wasserflüssen Babylon on two manuals. On the Oberwerk he chose the registration that Jacob Praetorius was accustomed to employ at the Petrikirche […]. He began by playing the chorale very simply and then proceeded to treat it in fugato style with much use of modulation. He also had to play a motet for six voices by Hieronimus Praetorius from the bass line and then improvise variations on it over two manuals. He then had to accompany a violin solo

by Johann Schop in order to display his mastery of continuo playing. He concluded by performing a joyous fugue on the full organ’.

Kortkamp also recalled his work as Weckmannn’s assistant during the years that followed:‘I helped Weckmannn to maintain the organ over a period of six years, so that he would not tire himself by tuning it and could save his strength for playing. It was very useful, for I would stand behind him while he was playing and draw the stops that he required. If I wanted to know, for example, how Jacob Praetorius played, he would improvise on a chorale, or on a Magnificat at Vespers, or on a psalm on a Sunday; I would listen to him with emotion, tears of joy running down my cheeks. After he had played he would explain his ideas and his concepts, thereby contributing to my education’.

Weckmannn became a citizen of Hamburg in 1660 and shortly afterwards founded the Collegium Musicum, an ensemble of some fifty musicians who rehearsed weekly and performed works by the best Italian and German composers.

The plague reached Hamburg in 1662 and carried off a great number of Weckmannn’s friends and colleagues. His Magnificat for organ most probably dates from that desperate time. His wife died in 1665 and left him with their eight children; two years later he was to marry Catharina Roland, who would bear him several more children.

Matthias Weckmannn died on 24 February 1674. Christoph Bernard, his closest friend, led the funeral service. He thanked the musicians of the Collegium Musicum at its conclusion, saying ‘You have been extremely lucky until now, but the future will bring many changes: music will fall once more to the level from which it once began its rise in this very spot some fourteen years ago’.

The musical language The stylus gravis or learned counterpoint of Jacob Praetorius was a fundamental part of Weckmannn’s style and thus explains the impression of austerity given by several of his works. This style is apparent in the contrapuntal writing of the first and last verses of the great cycles Es ist das Heil uns kommen her and O lux beata trinitas.

His sense of the timbre or sound coloration of each mode was also influenced by Praetorius. Weckmannn attached great importance to the choice of mode in both his chorales and his freely composed works; the characteristic timbre of the mode used was always evident, although this did not prevent him from colouring it with various alterations, chromaticisms and modulations. Praetorius’ most lasting influence on his pupil, however, is revealed in Weckmannn’s ability to ‘play with gravity and internalisation,

thus preparing the hearts of his listeners for the message of the sermon’ ( J. Kortkamp).

Scheidemann’s influence appears in different forms, notably in the stylus luxurians or ornamented style that Weckmannn often used for the second verses set for two manuals and pedals in his chorale cycles. Following the example of his teacher Sweelinck, Scheidemann had greatly expanded the use of echo effects between two keyboards; the second verse of Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ displays Weckmannn’s own mastery of this technique. We should also mention a certain relationship between Weckmannn’s Magnificat and Scheidemann’s settings of the Magnificat in the eight tones or modes.

We may well wonder what exactly the ‘pleasing inventions’ described by Matheson were. Weckmannn also possessed an astonishing rhythmical invention that was almost certainly linked to his experience in composing for both voices and instruments. The two verses of Gott sei gelobet und gebenedeiet present us with a great diversity of rhythmical figures; the first verse even includes a section in 6/4 time in a predominantly binary musical context – an effect frequently used by Weckmannn.

Another innovation was the use of the 16’ Trumpet stop in the left hand in the third verse of Es ist das Heil uns kommen her and in O lux beata trinitas; Weckmannn had a magnificent 16’ Trumpet stop available on the Oberwerk of the organ in the Jakobikirche in Hamburg.

A double pedal part had first been exploited by Samuel Scheidt and others; Weckmannn then extended its use, often strengthening the tenor line played in the left hand with the right foot on the pedals; examples of this are to be found in the first verse of the

Magnificat and the two great chorale cycles. The Praeambulum for 5 voices was evidently influenced by Scheidemann, although it displays greater virtuosity and its structure — prelude, binary fugue, ternary fugue, coda — exhibits a development that would later lead to Buxtehude’s great Praeludia.

Schütz had made Italian vocal works in both the old and the new styles available to Weckmannn, whilst Froberger taught him the style of Frescobaldi; this can be seen and heard in the toccatas for harpsichord and in the Canzone, which can be played on both the organ and the harpsichord.

Many of Weckmannn’s organ works were composed in the spirit of musica poetica and in accordance with the rhetorical principles that guided German composers during th the entire 17 century. The chorale cycles abound with rhetorical figures that help to surprise the listener, to increase tension and to underline the meaning of a word. The two first verses of Komm, heiliger Geist, Herre Gott provide magnificent examples of this.

We should also mention his use of chromaticism, frequently associated with evocations of pain or sorrow. The third verse of Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein receives a chromatic treatment that is unparalleled in North German music of the period. Even more impressive is Weckmannn’s use of dissonance; the Magnificat and the two last verses of O lux beata trinitas provide magnificent examples of this.

These innovatory techniques were always linked to the composer’s desire to convey a particular emotion, whether for voices or for instruments. Mattheson tells the following anecdote: “Matthias Weckmannn, the renowned organist of the Jakobikirche in

Hamburg, had set certain words of chapter 63 of the book of Isaiah to music; he had interpreted the meaning and set these words so expressively that Edzardi, a well-known convert from Judaism and with a degree in the arts, remarked ‘He has characterised the voice of the Messiah so clearly in the bass voice that it is as if you had seen him with your own eyes’. (Der vollkommene Capellmeister, Hamburg, 1739).

The two great chorale cycles Es ist das Heil uns kommen her and O lux beata trinitas display characteristics and qualities that are unequalled in 17th century organ music.

These cycles each last approximately thirty minutes and as such are amongst the longest works for organ composed during the Baroque period. They were evidently not designed for liturgical use but nonetheless carry a strong philosophical and theological weight.

Hans Davidsson (Göteborg, 1991) has not only revealed the rhetorical, symbolic and numerological aspects of Es ist das Heil in a remarkable study of Weckmannn’s works but has also established an extremely interesting link between the theories of Athanasius Kircher and the composition of O lux beata trinitas. Kircher, a Jesuit priest who was also scientist, music theorist and encyclopaedist, developed his ideas of a cosmic organ in his essay Musurgia Universalis that was published in Rome in 1650: ‘There is nothing that can be compared to the organ and nothing is more similar to the visible world than the organ […]. The organ is a miraculous realisation of art. None will deny that the art of organ building has been brought to a pitch of perfection in our time’.

Two cycles of exceptional breadth

Kircher compares the six days of the Creation to the six stops of a cosmic organ that would be played by the Creator himself. The symbolism of number, very much present in this cycle, connects Weckmannn’s work to the ancient and also mediaeval conception of music as a mirror of the perfection of Creation, reflecting the principles of the harmony of the spheres. This link with Kircher’s theories gives Weckmannn’s work boundless dimensions. If the work’s polyphonic complexity can to a certain extent be compared to that of Bach’s final works such as the Art of Fugue, it is no less true that there was no other composer for the organ who even came close to such a degree of fusion between music and cosmic philosophy.

Es ist das Heil uns kommen her The text of the chorale, written by Paul Speratus in 1523, has 14 verses. It takes its inspiration from an epistle by St. Paul and discusses the doctrine of salvation by faith, a central theme of Christian thought. It seems that Weckmannn has here chosen not to treat the original chorale stanza by stanza but rather as a theological whole. God has granted us salvation by sending Christ to us. His sacrifice therefore gives hope to mankind. Good works are not enough; mankind will be judged before God only by faith.

Weckmannn composes seven verses, the number seven symbolising divine grace. He combines the stylus gravis (verses 1, 2 and 7) with the stylus luxurians (all other verses).

Canons make up a considerable proportion of the work, with the risk that it may sound

The fifth verse is also for three voices, except that here the canon is at the twelfth and encircles the tenor line carrying the cantus firmus; this could well symbolise the role of Christ as intercessor.

The sixth verse is by far the richest and the most extraordinary of the entire cycle, it being a separate chorale fantasia that is 10 minutes long; it is predominantly in five

somewhat austere to modern ears: in Lutheran music the canon was traditionally the musical representation of religious law.

The first verse is for five voices and is played Im vollen Werck, on the full organ. The cantus firmus is played in the pedals. The second verse, for three voices, is a strict canon for two voices underneath the cantus firmus in the soprano line.

The third verse is written in an ornamented style for two manuals and pedal; its requirement of a 16’ trumpet stop in the left hand creates an impression of depth.

Weckmannn’s use of rhythm is particularly diversified: a leaping motive appears in bar 48 that could be an illustration of the second part of the text of stanza 7 — ‘He who believes in you and is baptised / will be welcomed into Heaven / and will not be lost’.

The fourth verse is for three voices, two of which are in canon at the octave. The cantus firmus is in the bass line. Many syncopated motives create an atmosphere that matches the description of sin in the ninth stanza. The second verse presents motives that use the figura suspirans as well as a most expressive modulation on the words ‘And he said: now crawl to the cross’; this is immediately followed by a passage in dance form that is much faster and more relaxed in character.

voices but adds a sixth voice towards the end. Davidsson here identifies the text of stanza 13 as providing the best explanation of the music’s character, just as much by its mood of jubilant praise as by the many musical details such as in the evocation of the Trinity: ‘Glory and praise to Thee for Thy good works / God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit / May his grace complete what he has begun in us / to honour his majesty / Holy be his name’.

The seventh and final verse is a large-scale postlude for 6 voices, two of which appear in the pedals. It most probably corresponds to stanza 14, the final stanza of the chorale text, this being a paraphrase of the Lord’s Prayer.

O lux beata trinitas The hymn attributed to St. Ambrose is made up of three verses dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The first verse establishes an analogy between God and light: ‘O Trinity, primordial unity, shed light on our hearts as the sun now sets’. Weckmannn’s inspiration here comes from the dichotomy of light and darkness that underpins Christian thought.

Weckmannn makes the greatest use of the numbers 3 (the symbol of the Trinity), 4 (fire, angels, the four elements…), and 6 (the six days of the Creation). The cycle comprises six verses, although the total becomes nine (three times three) when we realise that the fourth verse is made up of four variations.

The first verse is a grand prelude for five voices that is played on the full organ. Kirchner,

in his commentary on the first day of Creation, describes the creation of Light, the nine ranks of the angels and of the blessed. The mixture stops of the full organ can be seen as an allegorical representation in sound of these nine ranks.

The second verse is a fugue of great restraint and simplicity for four voices. The cantus firmus is given to the uppermost line, a possible depiction of the fire that burnt above the Creation.

Kircher’s commentary describes the creation of the four elements: earth, air, fire and water.

Weckmannn takes up the stylus luxurians for the third verse and presents us with a great variety of figuration. The Luneburg manuscript indicates a solo in the left hand using the 16’ trumpet stop — although here we have chosen a 16’ Dulcian — with the cantus firmus in the tenor line being played on the pedalboard. Kircher’s text here deserves to be quoted in its entirety: ‘On the moment that the third stop of the third day sounded, the earth, like an organ skilfully played, gave birth to a multitude of herbs, plants, flowers and fruits that then grew by themselves. What else, however, could this have been except an immense and varied selection of modulations, cadenzas and fugues performed on the divine organ? Although all of these are very different by nature and dissonant in relation to each other, they are all magnificent and ornamented by the omniscient Organist, blended with each other in such a way that a marvellous harmony is achieved’.

The fourth verse is the most individual on many accounts: it is the longest of the movements by far and it is made up of four variations. The first two of these are in bicinium form, in the manner of Sweelinck, whilst the second pair are for three voices, two of which are in canon at the octave. The cantus firmus is always present and its long

notes contrast with the agility and the fluidity of the counterpoint. Behind the apparent austerity of the writing we can perceive a turning motion that can create a certain dizziness; Kircher’s commentary states that the fourth day was that of the creation of the heavenly bodies: the sun, the moon, the planets and the stars. He described the heavens bedecked with stars and countless bursts of lights: ‘What might these signify — they can only be harmonic melodies, hidden away beneath daylight and dark night, the two great consonances and dissonances of time’.

Hans Davidsson suggests that the first variation represents the fundamental union, the union of God with himself; the second depicts the union of the angels who dance in constant spheres around God (symbolised by the cantus firmus); the third presents the unity of the macrocosm, symbolised by a marvellously ornamented dance around the cantus firmus; the fourth displays the unity of the microcosm, humanity itself.

Whatever symbolic representation Weckmannn may have intended, we have here a style of composition that is so elaborately structured that, at a first glance, it could actually seem to be extremely simple.

The fifth verse is composed for two manuals and pedalboard. Kircher states that the fifth day saw the appearance of life on earth, speaking of ‘the laws of agreement and of dissent, of love and of hate, that created a harmony and a concord miraculously based on consonance and dissonance’ between living beings. The music here seems to distance itself from the celestial harmony that preceded it and takes on a more troubled and melancholy character in which dissonance and consonance, tension and release are

alternated and even superposed. Davidsson suggests that from bar 57 onwards we have a musical representation first of the Father, then the Son (in ternary rhythm) and finally of the Holy Spirit — this last with extremely fluid and flowing passages that seem like the rushing of a mighty wind.

The sixth and final verse is a postlude for five voices on the full organ. It introduces falling melodic motifs that are dragged down by the cantus firmus being played in the lowest register of the pedals. This verse is anything but triumphant: it abounds in syncopations, ritardandi, dissonances and exaggeratedly chromatic passages before finally resolving on a resounding G major chord. Should we see a tragic vision of humanity or even a depiction of the forces of Evil in Weckmannn’s music? We are here very far indeed from Kircher’s joyous description of the creation of Man and of the grandiose harmony produced by the cosmic organ.

This music remains a mystery and has certainly not yet revealed all its secrets. We may wonder what Weckmannn’s contemporaries thought of it, but no such record remains.

We can only contemplate, think upon and question those works of his that have survived the centuries.

For the major works I chose the instrument in the Catharinakirche, another of Hamburg’s great organs. Heinrich Scheidemann was organist there for several decades and Weckmannn had certainly heard Scheidemann playing on the instrument. The organ was much modified during the centuries that followed, but the Flentrop firm has returned it to its previous glory thanks to a restoration / rebuilding in which every historical element — notably several hundred pipes from a large number of original stops — were carefully examined and analysed before being restored and then used as a reference for the reconstruction of the instrument.

We chose two other historical instruments: the organ of the Kirche Ss. Cosmae et Damiani in Stade that was laid out by Berendt Huss and finished by his pupil Arp Schnitger; the organ built by Schnitger in the Mauritiuskirche in Hollern and recently restored by Hendrik Ahrend. Weckmannn’s works now sound anew on three different organs, these ranging from the small instrument in Hollern with its wonderfully transparent acoustic to the monumental instruments of the Katharinakircke in Hamburg.

Matthias Weckmann fut inhumé le 1er mars 1674 – cinq jours après sa mort – en la Jacobikirche de Hambourg. Avec lui disparaissait l’une des dernières personnalités de la tradition musicale hanséatique. C’est en ces termes qu’après sa mort, Christoph Bernhardt (1627-1692), cantor des grandes églises de Hambourg de 1663 à 1674 et ami intime de Weckmann, évoque l’avenir musical de la cité :  Ici la musique va se taire, comme elle s’est fait entendre durant quatorze années. Pour maintenir quelque intérêt à son égard, on ne se souciera plus de trouver des honnêtes gens plus sensibles aux bonnes grâces d’un homme qu’à son talent... comme jadis le déclin de l’harmonie musicale sera la conséquence de la disparition de ceux qui étaient capables d’entretenir cet intérêt. Il en ira de même avec le régiment de la bonne ville de Hambourg, ainsi que je le constate dans le comportement des jeunes gens qui espèrent encore le rejoindre. Nous en saurons davantage d’ici une vingtaine d’années.  Les réflexions de Bernhardt sont remarquables à plus d’un égard. Non seulement il donne une estimation correcte du développement politique de la cité hanséatique pour les 20 années mais, en outre, il brosse un tableau pessimiste de l’évolution musicale à venir. En effet il n’y avait plus guère à Hambourg que Johann Adam Reinken qui eût une réputation de musicien au-delà des limites de la ville. L’apogée de la culture musicale hambourgeoise, avec une quantité d’excellents musiciens tels que les Praetorius,

Scheidemann, Schop et Selle, était révolu.

D’après les chroniqueurs contemporains, cet épanouissement culmine dans les travaux de Weckmann et, plus tard, de Bernhardt, non seulement au niveau de l’organisation commune des offices à la Jacobikirche où Weckmann était organiste et clerc, mais surtout dans le Collegium Musicum qu’il avait fondé en 1660. Soutenu par la haute société, les concerts de cette institution étaient destinés à un public de  connaisseurs et d’amateurs  intéressés par l’audition d’œuvres les plus récentes (italiennes et allemandes principalement). Le répertoire s’ouvrait aux œuvres religieuses et profanes et était souvent le résultat de commandes.

Matthias Weckmann naquit a Niederdorla, un petit village dans les environs de Mülhausen (Thuringe) en 1616. Son père était pasteur et s’intéressait aussi à la littérature.

On ne sait quasiment rien de la jeunesse de Matthias et du début de sa formation musicale.

Cependant, il est probable que son père l’ait conduit en 1628 à Dresde, siège de l’Électeur de la cour de Saxe, pour y poursuivre sa formation musicale. Heinrich Schütz (l5851672), le musicien de cour le plus célèbre de son temps, y était maître de chapelle. Cette année-là, ce dernier entreprenait son second voyage en Italie au cours duquel il rencontra probablement Claudio Monteverdi. Il se pourrait qu’après son retour en 1629, Schütz se soit personnellement chargé de la formation de Weckmann qui, entretemps, avait entrepris une carrière de chanteur. En avril 1631, à Leipzig, l’Électeur protestant rencontrait le roi Gustave Adolphe de Suède. La prestation de Weckmann en qualité de soliste de la chapelle de la cour, dirigée par Schütz à cette occasion, nous a fourni l’indication sur sa courte

carrière de chanteur.

C’est à ce moment que les conséquences de la Guerre de Trente Ans eurent une influence importante sur la vie de Weckmann. La Saxe, État protestant le plus important de l’Empire germanique, était gouverné par l’Électeur Johann Georg I, ivrogne et chasseur invétéré, qui avait jusqu’alors soutenu l’empereur habsbourgeois Ferdinand II. Ce dernier mettait tout en œuvre pour assurer le triomphe de la Contre-Réforme. En 1631, lorsque le roi de Suède eût pris part à la guerre avec succès et que l’Empereur eût exigé la restitution de l’ensemble des possessions antérieurement catholiques, l’Électeur de Saxe se trouva en position inconfortable. La rencontre de Leipzig fut arrangée pour réunir toutes les forces protestantes. Mais elle n’évita pas à la Saxe d’être le lieu de passage des armées combattantes. La conjoncture politique et économique s’aggrava. Des années de difficultés financières commencèrent pour la chapelle de la cour. Elles se manifestèrent surtout par des plus longs retards de paiement des musiciens.

En dépit de cette situation, l’Électeur accorda et même paya une bourse mensuelle à Weckmann, ce qui constitue bien la preuve de ses grandes capacités. Cette bourse lui permit d’étudier l’orgue à Hambourg auprès de Jacob Praetorius (?-1651), l’un des plus grands organistes de son temps qui, lui-même, avait été l’élève de Sweelinck. Cette cité opulente gouvernée par une oligarchie de familles de marchands, se permettait une vie musicale florissante, spécialement dans le domaine de la musique d’église et de la musique officielle. Les organistes des églises principales recevaient des traitements considérables et jouissaient d’une haute considération sociale.

En route pour le Danemark, Schütz conduisit Weckmann chez Praetorius, le mettant ainsi à l’abri des hostilités. Au cours de ce premier séjour de quelque trois années à Hambourg, Weckmann eut l’occasion d’apprécier le talent d’organiste de Scheidemann.

Il rentra ensuite pour peu de temps à Dresde. Schütz en effet, qui avait laissé ses meilleures compositions à la cour de Copenhague, s’était vu refuser par l’Électeur de venir les prendre en personne ; Weckmann prit la route du nord à sa place. C’était pour le jeune homme d’une vingtaine d’années une excellente occasion de faire la connaissance de la vie musicale à la cour danoise après avoir vécu à Hambourg, la cité de la musique.

Bien que Christian IV, roi du Danemark, n’ait pas été très efficace dans la politique extérieure de son royaume et qu’il ait perdu les guerres qu’il avait entreprises, il se montrait – au contraire de l’Électeur saxon – tout disposé à investir dans l’art et la musique. Et il en avait les moyens. Cette fois, cependant, le séjour de Weckmann au Danemark ne fut qu’un intermède : il dut rentrer à Dresde.

En fin de l’année 1638, en effet, on y célébrait les noces du prince héritier avec une princesse brandebourgeoise. C’est à cette occasion et dans le cadre de la Guerre de Trente Ans – événement politique capital – que fut fondée la chapelle musicale de la cour de l’Électeur. Weckmann y était organiste mais assurait aussi le service à la table du prince.

En septembre 1641, Weckmann fut nommé organiste de la cour et, à l’intervention de Schütz, obtint de donner des leçons de chant et d’orgue.

En 1642, le retard dans le paiement des traitements s’élevait à trois années. Aussi l’invitation que le roi du Danemark fit à Heinrich Schütz et aux meilleurs musiciens de la cour de

l’Électeur fut-elle une providence. C’est à l’occasion du mariage de ses deux filles, en novembre 1642, que le roi du Danemark engagea les musiciens. Weckmann put demeurer quelques années au Danemark où il conquit la plus grande estime. De fructueux échanges avec d’autres musiciens, un entourage d’amateurs de musique à la cour et une relative distance entre la guerre et lui (mise à part la guerre dano-suédoise des années quarante), tout cela doit avoir fait du Danemark un paradis en comparaison avec Dresde.

En 1646, Weckmann fut contraint de rentrer à la cour de Saxe. Les passeports furent établis en 1647. Weckmann accompagna la cour du Prince Électeur qui était en route vers Carlsbad. Lors de son passage à Hambourg, Weckmann termina un volume de copies de diverses partitions parmi lesquelles figurent des œuvres religieuses de er Monteverdi. Au cours de ce voyage, le prince héritier mourut, le 1 juillet 1647, aux abords de Dresde. On peut supposer que Weckmann retourna au Danemark avec le convoi funèbre, d’autant qu’il n’était pas d’une grande nécessité en Saxe. En effet, le prince héritier danois étant le beau-frère de l’Électeur de Saxe, un deuil national y fut décrété jusqu’à la fin de l’année avec interdiction de jouer ni de l’orgue ni d’aucun instrument.

Lors de ce nouveau séjour dans le nord, Weckmann épousa en 1648 à Lübeck, la fille d’un musicien officiel, Regina Beute. Il avait pour témoin Franz Tunder, l’organiste de la Marienkirche. Rentré à Dresde, Weckmann fut nommé Inspector de la chapelle musicale de l’Électeur. En août de la même année, Christoph Bernhardt fut engagé comme musico und Singer à la chapelle de la cour. Une collaboration assortie d’une indéfectible amitié se développa entre les deux musiciens. Peu de temps après, Johann Jacob Froberger

(1616-1667), organiste et claveciniste de l’Empereur, arriva à Dresde. Il avait déjà entendu vanter Weckmann à la cour impériale et il profita de l’occasion pour faire sa connaissance. L’Électeur leur proposa une compétition que Weckmann remporta, ce qui lui valut l’estime de Froberger et sa durable amitié. S’ensuivirent des échanges de lettres et de partitions.

La situation économique précaire persistait à la chapelle de la cour, tout au moins en ce qui concernait les musiciens locaux. Malgré cela, ce n’est qu’en 1655 que Weckmann se décida à postuler un emploi indépendant à la Jacobikirche de Hambourg. Il y fut encouragé par des relations amicales. Il prit un congé sous un prétexte quelconque et réussit brillamment une audition devant des juges aussi éminents que Scheidemann, Schop, Selle et Johann Praetorius (le frère de Jacob Praetorius, son ancien professeur à Hambourg). Le conseil municipal de Hambourg demanda à l’Électeur de Saxe l’autorisation d’engager Weckmann. Celui-ci déménagea à Hambourg où il fut non seulement organiste à la Jacobikirche et à la chapelle Sainte-Gertrude, mais aussi le clerc de ces deux églises. Il occupa cet emploi qui correspond à celui d’un expert comptable jusqu’à la fin de l’année 1670.

Cette période hambourgeoise paraît s’être écoulée paisiblement pour Weckmann, partagé entre ses fonctions d’organiste et la fondation du Collegium Musicum. Il semble malgré sa réputation qu’il ait eu peu d’élèves. Parmi ceux-ci, cependant, on connaît Jacob Kortkamp qui devint le premier et le plus fidèle de ses biographes. Au cours des années, il perdit évidemment, des membres de sa famille et des amis. Des enfants, victimes de

la mortalité infantile, sa première femme (1665), son frère, Andreas (1662) ; Heinrich Scheidemann et Thomas Selle, victimes de la peste des années 1663/1664, et en 1667 Johann Jacob Froberger. En 1664, Weckmann acquit un caveau de famille qui se trouve dans la Jacobikirche, sous l’orgue qu’il a joué.

Les dernières années de Weckmann, à partir de 1671, semblent être marquées par l’épuisement. Il ne fut plus capable de remplir ses fonctions de comptable et d’archiviste de l’église. Néanmoins, il semble avoir conservé son poste d’organiste.

La musique sacrée Cet enregistrement constitue l’intégrale de l’œuvre religieuse connue de Matthias Weckmann. Parmi les bibliothèques qui possèdent les sources de ces cantates se trouvent deux des plus importants fonds de cette époque : les célèbres collections Düben à Upsala et Bokemeyer à Berlin. Cependant, les seuls autographes de Matthias Weckmann sont conservés à la Ratsbücherei de Lünebourg. Datés de 1663, ces manuscrits contiennent quatre cantates dont la qualité et le niveau d’émotion sont particulièrement frappants : Weine nicht, Zion spricht, Herr wenn ich, Wie liegt die Stadt.

Il est cependant remarquable que ce«tte douzaine d’œuvres nous permette de déceler à la fois l’unité stylistique du maître, mais aussi la variété des genres.

Il est évident que l’auditeur de cet enregistrement sera frappé par certains aspects très modernes de l’harmonie. Weckmann fait usage d’accords très audacieux pour l’époque, de chromatismes qui tendent l’écriture. À certains endroits, ces extravagances sont telles qu’il indique sur la partition un « NB » (nota bene) qui attire l’attention des musiciens sur le fait que la dissonance est un effet bien réfléchi, même si cela peut leur sembler étrange par rapport aux règles habituelles.

Dans l’ordonnance des pièces, nous avons voulu respecter la seule source, autographe semble t-il. En effet, les quatre œuvres de la bibliothèque de Lünebourg constituent un véritable cycle de cantates. Le terme de « cantate » n’est pas tout à fait exact puisque, sans doute sous l’influence des modèles italiens qu’il connaissait (entre autres par Schütz), il

donne à ces œuvres le titre de « Concerto ». Les œuvres sont numérotées et deux d’entre elles sont datées : Zion spricht (9 février 1663), et Wie liegt die Stadt (15 août 1663). À la fin de cette œuvre apparaît une autre date (14 octobre 1663) qui indiquerait peutêtre la fin de la composition. Faut-il en déduire que cette composition particulièrement développée a été écrite durant cette période ? De plus, la première date est précédée de la mention « Cum JESV Bono ».

Il est bien probable que Weckmann sentait ce besoin du soutien de Dieu pour arriver à achever cette œuvre. La peste avait ravagé Hambourg cette année-là. Le choix des textes est semble-t-il lié à ces circonstances pénibles ; malgré les douleurs, le croyant veut encore rester confiant en ce Dieu auquel il demande la consolation et l’éternité.

Ces quatre concertos vocaux sont remarquables à de nombreux égards. Ils font appel à une formation instrumentale importante (2 ou 3 violons, 3 violes de gambe et continuo). À ces instruments sont confiées d’importantes parties indépendantes qui servent d’introduction ou de ritournelles entre les versets chantés. Mais ces ritournelles sont d’une facture très expressive qui commente les textes (cela est particulièrement remarquable dans les Concertos I et IV). D’autre part, les instruments accompagnent aussi les voix, donnant ainsi à la partition une dimension considérable.

Weine nicht est sans doute le concerto le plus impressionnant à cet égard. Deux grandes sinfonias précèdent les récits de l’alto et de la basse avant d’amorcer, dans leur troisième intervention, le style de bataille qui domine sur les mots « es hat überwunden der Löwe vom Stamm Juda ». Quant à l’Amen, il est écrit sur un ostinato typique de

ciaccona italienne (une basse que l’on retrouve dans de nombreuses œuvres du début e du XVII siècle, entre autre, chez Monteverdi). Parmi les usages des instruments, il faut aussi remarquer la rare perfection des passages où les instruments tissent un superbe contrepoint autour d’une voix seule. Cela est particulièrement remarquable sur les mots « Kann auch eine leibliche Mutter » du Concerto II. Sur le plan expressif, Wie liegt die Stadt est certainement un sommet. Il est évident que Weckmann y utilise sa connaissance du madrigalisme italien. Il suffit d’écouter cette plainte de la voix de soprano qui, au début de la cantate, évoque avec tant d’émotion cette ville déserte. Et l’effet devait être certainement plus impressionnant lorsque les interprètes respectaient la note de l’auteur demandant que la soprano soit placée loin de la basse. Cet effet théâtral n’est véritablement possible qu’au concert ; on peut imaginer l’impression provoquée par cette voix que l’on entend venir de loin. Si l’on peut associer ceci avec une connaissance des effets du madrigalisme, il faut aussi reconnaître que Weckmann connaissait (et sans doute par l’intermédiaire de Christoph Bernhardt) l’art du chant italien : « Sie weinet des Nachts » avec ses ornements et notes répétées à la façon du trillo ... Mais toutes ces connaissances sont utilisées au profit d’une musique d’une grande émotion : écoutez la Vox Christi (voix de basse) « Euch sage ich » en arioso accompagné par les cordes, ou cette poignante invocation de la Jérusalem pécheresse « Jerusalem hat sich versündiget »...

Les modèles italiens se retrouvent encore dans d’autres œuvres et tout particulièrement dans les deux histoires sacrées (Dialogue de Tobie et Raguel, Dialogue de l’annonciation).

Si nous manquons d’indications sur la datation des œuvres de Weckmann il est cependant possible de faire certaines suppositions. La qualité de l’écriture vocale et instrumentale, la richesse des harmonies peuvent nous faire penser que Wenn der Herr et Kommet her zu mir alle font partie des œuvres de la période de maturité à Hambourg (époque des quatre concertos). Les autres cantates seraient peut-être plus anciennes. Les deux œuvres latines sont d’un genre plus simple avec ces petites ritournelles intercalées entre les versets qui n’ont ni la force, ni l’imagination, ni les harmonies recherchées de celles des autres cantates. Et cette remarque vaut aussi pour les versets chantés. Par contre, la cantate du combat de Saint-Michel, Es erhub sich ein Streit nous montre un tout autre aspect de l’œuvre de Weckmann. Ici, c’est le disciple de Schütz qui apparaît.

Il s’agit en fait d’un triple chœur : un grand chœur à quatre voix, un chœur de solistes (Favorit Chor) à cinq voix et un chœur d’instruments (deux violons, trois trombones) et basse continue. C’est le style majestueux pratiqué par Schütz dans ses Psalmen Davids (1619), l’un des résultats les plus probants de son assimilation du style polychoral vénitien.

sa carrière le mène à Dresde, à la cour de Danemark, à Lübeck et enfin à Hambourg où il devient le titulaire de l’orgue de la Jacobikirche. Parmi ses professeurs, il faut évidemment mentionner Heinrich Schütz et l’organiste Jacob Praetorius. De plus, si l’on parcourt sa biographie, on peut constater qu’il eut l’occasion de connaître une quantité impressionnante de musiciens tels que Tunder, Scheidemann, Bernhardt, Selle ainsi que Froberger. Pour le programme de ce disque, ce dernier contact est évidemment capital.

Les deux musiciens ont le même âge. Hélas ! Nous ne connaissons pas la date exacte de leur rencontre ; elle doit néanmoins se passer après son retour de Lübeck, où Weckmann s’est marié en 1648, et avant son départ pour Hambourg en 1655 ; les études les plus récentes la placent avant février 1650. À cette époque, Johann Jacob Froberger a déjà séjourné durant quelques années à Rome et y a reçu l’enseignement de Frescobaldi. Lors d’un second séjour romain, peu avant 1649, il a sans doute été en contact avec Carissimi.

Le séjour à Dresde se situe à un moment particulièrement complexe de la vie de Froberger. Il est probable que cette longue période de voyages soit également liée à une mission diplomatique qui lui aurait été confiée par l’Empereur. Quelques dates précises jalonnent cette époque : Bruxelles en 1650, Paris en 1652 (où il rencontre Louis Couperin, Chambonnières, Gallot et Denis Gaultier), Londres où il écrit cette Plainte faite à Londres pour passer le Mélancolie (sic). Il serait donc intéressant de savoir où se situe le point de départ de sa parfaite connaissance du style français et des « Suites » : avant ou après le séjour parisien, car son « récital » à Dresde comportait aussi des Suites !

en détail par Johann Mattheson en 1740. C’est à une sorte de concours que le Prince Électeur de Saxe voulut convier les deux artistes. Mais il avait eu soin de demander à Weckmann d’être « modeste » dans son jeu pour ne pas surpasser l’organiste de l’Empereur ! Froberger joua plusieurs pièces de son propre répertoire (Toccatas, Capriccios, Ricercares et Suites) ; par contre, la « réponse » de Weckmann fut une longue improvisation sur l’un des thèmes joués par Froberger. Et, par la suite, les deux musiciens entretinrent des relations amicales ! Il semble évident que cette confrontation a permis à Weckmann de disposer de nombreux modèles nouveaux de musique de clavier, et plus spécifiquement pour les œuvres destinées au clavecin. Mais il ne faudrait pas se laisser abuser par l’anecdote ; il ne faut pas oublier que Weckmann a aussi hérité de la tradition des organistes de l’Allemagne nordique, et donc de Sweelinck. De plus, sa connaissance e du style français semble bien plus influencée par l’art des luthistes du début du XVII siècle que par celui des clavecinistes du milieu du siècle (comme Louis Couperin).

Le programme de ce disque réunit l’intégrale des compositions de Weckmann destinées au clavecin. Évidemment, tout comme dans l’œuvre de Froberger (ou de son maître italien Frescobaldi), certaines compositions destinées seulement au clavier (sans pédalier) peuvent être considérées comme des compositions d’orgue ou de clavecin. Il nous a également semblé important de confier l’interprétation de certaines pièces au e clavicorde, dont l’usage était extrêmement courant au XVII siècle.

Sur le plan formel et stylistique, il est frappant de constater que Weckmann aborde la construction des diverses pièces de façons très variées qui témoignent évidemment de

multiples influences qui ont marqué sa formation. Ainsi, dans le domaine des suites (à noter que l’intitulé de « suite » n’apparaît nulle part dans les manuscrits), il faut constater l’irrégularité de l’ordre dans lequel sont placées les danses, la gigue apparaissant parfois en deuxième position après l’Allemande. Est-ce l’influence de Froberger qui, lui aussi, pratique souvent cette inversion ? Le « double » de la Sarabande de la Suite en do mineur est à nouveau très typique du style des luthistes.

Les Toccatas offrent des aspects stylistiques très contrastés. Chacune correspond à un schéma particulier : si la Toccata en do se présente comme un développement relativement continu dans une atmosphère assez brillante, celle en la mineur ne cesse de nous conduire de surprise en surprise et rappelle sans doute plus le modèle de Frescobaldi. La Toccata en mi majeur semble comme plus « instrumentale » avec ces traits de virtuosité que l’on peut apparenter à l’esprit du stylus fantasticus que Johann Sebastian Bach découvrira lors de son séjour à Hambourg et à Lübeck. D’autres sont construites plus nettement en diverses sections : c’est le cas de la Toccata en mi mineur dans laquelle, après un passage d’écriture libre, se développe une fugue puis une pièce dans le style imitatif de la Canzona. C’est également le cas de la Toccata vel praeludium contenant en son centre une longue partie fuguée et dans laquelle l’intitulé alternatif de Praeludium confirme l’influence des organistes de l’école de Sweelinck.

De même, les Canzone sont de types variés. Elles comportent plusieurs sections d’écriture imitative, parfois conclues brièvement dans un style plus libre : dans la tradition italienne, chaque section est écrite dans une proportion rythmique différente,

binaire ou ternaire. Il faut évidemment accorder une place particulière à la Canzona en do mineur dont les trois parties sont basées sur le même motif thématique traité de trois manières différentes, avec l’utilisation d’un rythme de gigue pour la partie centrale ; en quelque sorte un mélange de l’esprit de la canzona avec celui des variations.

L’œuvre de clavecin de Weckmann contient également deux pièces que l’on peut considérer comme des thèmes variés (dans l’esprit de ce qui est souvent nommé en Allemagne « Partita »). Lucidor se rattache très nettement au style des variations de Sweelinck. Par contre, les variations sur Die Lieblichen Blicke annoncent de façon très nette le style de e partitas de la seconde moitié du XVII siècle ; la deuxième variation est typiquement un « double » avec ses motifs en doubles croches, tandis que la troisième développe le thème dans un rythme ternaire. Tout comme dans son œuvre vocale et dans ses sonates, si Weckmann apparaît ici comme un observateur attentif des styles qui influencent e la création musicale du début du XVII siècle, il se présente aussi comme l’un des principaux créateurs de cette grande tradition qui aboutit à la génération de Buxtehude et des maîtres de Johann Sebastian Bach.

La musique de chambre Outre des pièces de clavier (clavecin et orgue), l’œuvre de Matthias Weckmann comporte quelques compositions de musique de chambre. Ces dix sonates constituent un ensemble très particulier. Huit d’entre elles sont écrites à quatre parties obligées pour cornettino (petit cornet en ré), violon, basson (fagotto), trombone et basse continue. Les sources manuscrites proposent également des alternatives pour le trombone qui peut être remplacé par un alto (viola da braccio) et pour le basson auquel on peut substituer une bombarde. Les deux autres sonates sont des trios pour cornettino, violon et basse continue.

Cette formation est très exceptionnelle. Il faut toutefois remarquer que ces quatre instruments sont ceux qui sont les plus utilisés dans les églises italiennes depuis la fin du XVIe siècle. Dans le premier quart du XVIIe siècle on trouve ce type de formation utilisée par certains compositeurs d’origine italienne actifs en Autriche et Allemagne du Sud : Biagio Marini à Neubourg, Giovanni Valentini et Marc Antonio Ferro à Vienne, puis par leurs héritiers locaux comme Johann Heinrich Schmelzer ou plus tard Johann Joseph Fux. Dans toutes ces compositions, les quatre instrumentistes sont considérés comme des virtuoses à part égale. Il est probable que Weckmann a connu ce type de formation suite à sa rencontre avec Froberger.

C’est en 1655 que Weckmann s’installe définitivement à Hambourg où il obtient un emploi à la Jacobikirche. En 1660, il y fonde, en collaboration avec Christoph Bernhardt,

le Collegium Musicum. Cette institution musicale réunissait des musiciens et un public très attentif à une pratique musicale véritablement évoluée, voire expérimentale.

La musique religieuse et profane y était jouée ; on y présentait les œuvres les plus récentes de compositeurs allemands mais aussi italiens. Il faut donc supposer que les instrumentistes de ce Collegium Musicum étaient choisis parmi les plus éminents virtuoses de la ville.

Toutes ces sonates sont constituées de la même façon. Elles comportent plusieurs sections lentes ou rapides, très souvent enchaînées et comportant de nombreuses sections imitatives dans lesquelles tous les instruments participent avec les mêmes responsabilités. Les passages homophoniques permettent de créer de beaux contrastes d’harmonies, parfois très expressifs, ou de majestueux ensembles dont les caractères se rapprochent de l’esprit des « batailles » Les sonates en trio sont de dimensions plus modestes. Nous avons profité de l’opportunité d’une indication de variante instrumentale pour confier la Sonate X à deux violons et viole de gambe. Conformément aux possibilités et pratiques de l’époque, nous avons confié le continuo à plusieurs instruments, théorbe, clavecin ou orgue. Nous avons utilisé aussi l’orgue régale, dont l’emploi est très souvent attesté dans les églises d’Allemagne du Nord.

Les lieder À côté de ces sonates, l’œuvre profane de Weckmann comporte également ces quelques petites mélodies composées pour des circonstances bien particulières et dédiées chaque fois à diverses personnes de son entourage hambourgeois. Pour chacune, nous avons sélectionné deux ou trois couplets parmi les nombreux qui sont prévus pour ces petites mélodies. Ceci confirme sans doute la disponibilité et la cordialité des relations que Weckmann devait avoir avec ces diverses personnes. De petites anecdotes qui rendent e certes plus vivant ce musicien du XVII siècle...

Matthias Weckmannn occupe une position singulière dans la musique allemande e du XVII siècle : son œuvre vocale dégage une expressivité exceptionnelle, son œuvre instrumentale est à la fois savante, séduisante et virtuose. Son œuvre d’orgue est plus remarquable encore : située entre la génération de Jacob Praetorius et Heinrich Scheidemann d’une part, et celle de Johann Adam Reinken et Dietrich Buxtehude de l’autre, elle se distingue par la diversité des expressions et des affetti, par le mélange de gravité et de virtuosité, par une richesse contrapunctique hors norme, par un fort ancrage théologique ainsi que par une dimension spéculative qui la relie à la fois aux plus grands polyphonistes de la fin du Moyen Âge et aux dernières œuvres de Johann Sebastian Bach. La comparaison avec Bach ne s’arrête pas là : comme lui, Weckmannn assimile les influences allemandes, italiennes et françaises et opère un lien très personnel entre les conceptions musicales du Moyen Âge, de la Renaissance et de son temps.

Matthias Weckmannn fut considéré de son vivant, et jusqu’au milieu du siècle suivant, comme l’un des plus grands maîtres de l’orgue. Son œuvre n’a toutefois pas encore e trouvé à notre époque toute la reconnaissance qu’elle mérite. Au XX siècle, elle est restée ignorée ou incomprise de la plupart des musicologues. Malgré le remarquable (1) travail musicologique et organistique de Hans Davidsson , elle reste relativement peu fréquentée des organistes et mal connue du grand public.

L’ŒUVRE D’ORGUE 

Repères biographiques Matthias Weckmannn naquit en Thuringe en 1616. Dès l’âge de douze ans, son père, qui était pasteur luthérien, lui fit faire ses études musicales à Dresde où il fut placé sous la protection de Heinrich Schütz. En 1633, celui-ci l’envoya se perfectionner à Hambourg auprès de Jacob Praetorius II, l’un des plus célèbres élèves de Sweelinck. Un siècle plus tard, Johann Mattheson rapporte qu’après avoir travaillé avec Jacob Praetorius sur recommandation de Schütz, Matthias Weckmannn fut amené « à tempérer l’approche sérieuse de Praetorius par le charme de Scheidemann, introduisant aussi de nombreuses inventions plaisantes ».

Weckmannn retourna à Dresde en 1636 et fut nommé organiste de la chapelle de l’Électeur et membre de la Kurprinzliche Kapelle. Il fit ensuite un séjour au Danemark au titre d’organiste de la cour et fut rappelé à Dresde en 1647. En 1648, il épousa Regina Beute à Lübeck, et Franz Tunder, célèbre organiste de Sainte-Marie, fut son témoin.

En 1650, il fut invité à Dresde à se mesurer au clavier au le célébrissime Johann Jacob Froberger, le claveciniste de l’Empereur, qui déclara à l’issue du concert : « Celui-ci est un véritable virtuose. » Ce fut le début d’une longue amitié et d’échanges épistolaires et artistiques entre les deux musiciens.

En 1655, Weckmannn fut nommé organiste à Saint-Jacques à Hambourg au terme d’une audition publique dont son élève Johann Kortkamp nous a transmis un compterendu détaillé : « Quand ce fut à son tour de jouer, il improvisa sur le plein-jeu dans le ton du sujet de la fugue imposée, c’est-à-dire dans le premier ton, mais qu’il mélangea

avec le troisième ton de splendide manière. Ensuite, il traita le choral An Wasserflüssen Babylon sur deux claviers. À l’Oberwerk, il choisit la registration habituelle de Jacob Praetorius à St Petri […]. Il commença par jouer le choral très simplement, de sorte que les personnes ordinaires qui étaient majoritaires dans l’église, puissent le reconnaître.

Puis il le traita de manière fuguée et à travers toutes les transpositions de telle sorte qu’il traversa tous les demi-tons, et revint avec une habileté remarquable au ton original. Il dut également jouer un motet à six voix de Hieronimus Praetorius à partir de la basse, et ensuite le traiter en variations sur deux claviers. Enfin pour conclure, il joua une joyeuse fugue sur le plein-jeu. Il dut ensuite accompagner Johann Schop dans un solo de violon, afin de faire entendre à quel point il excellait dans le continuo. […]. Enfin pour conclure, il joua une joyeuse fugue sur le plein-jeu. » Kortkamp se souvient également de son travail d’assistant durant les années qui suivirent: « J’ai aidé Weckmannn pendant six ans à entretenir l’orgue afin qu’il ne se fatigue pas à accorder et qu’il garde ses forces pour jouer. C’était très utile : quand il jouait, je me tenais derrière lui et tirais les registres comme il le désirait. Et si je souhaitais savoir, par exemple, comment Jacob Praetorius jouait, il improvisait sur un choral, aux Vêpres un Magnificat, ou un dimanche un psaume, et je l’écoutais avec passion, laissant couler de joyeuses larmes. Après quoi il m’expliquait ses idées et inspirations, contribuant ainsi à mon éducation. » En 1660, Weckmannn devint citoyen de Hambourg et fonda peu après le Collegium Musicum, un ensemble d’une cinquantaine de musiciens qui répétait chaque semaine et

jouait les meilleurs compositeurs italiens et allemands.

En 1662, la peste frappa Hambourg et emporta un grand nombre de ses amis et collègues. La composition du Magnificat pour orgue date très probablement de cette période douloureuse. En 1665, le décès de sa femme le laissa seul avec huit enfants. Deux ans plus tard, il se remaria avec Catharina Roland, dont il eut plusieurs enfants.

Matthias Weckmannn mourut le 24 février 1674. Christoph Bernhardt, son ami le plus proche, dirigea le service funèbre. À l’issue de celui-ci, il remercia les musiciens du Collegium Musicum et leur dit : « Vous avez été très heureux jusqu’ici, mais à l’avenir, il y aura un grand changement pour vous, le niveau musical retombera à nouveau, tout comme il n’a cessé de s’élever durant ces quatorze années. » Le langage musical Le Stylus gravis (contrepoint savant) de Jacob Praetorius est une caractéristique récurrente du style de Weckmannn, ce qui peut expliquer l’impression d’austérité qui se dégage de certaines de ses œuvres. L’écriture contrapunctique est particulièrement complexe dans les premiers et derniers versets des grands cycles Es ist das Heil uns kommen her et O Lux Beata trinitas.

Autre lien avec Praetorius, le respect de la couleur de chaque mode (ou « ton ») : dans les chorals comme dans les pièces libres, Weckmannn attache beaucoup d’importance au mode choisi, il s’imprègne de sa couleur spécifique pour déterminer le caractère de la

composition mais ne se prive pas de le colorer de diverses altérations, chromatismes et modulations. De Praetorius, il a également retenu cette capacité de « jouer avec gravité et intériorité, en sorte de préparer les cœurs à l’écoute de la prédication » ( J. Kortkamp).

L’influence de Scheidemann apparaît sous différentes formes, notamment dans le style orné (Stylus luxurians) qui caractérise les seconds versets des cycles de chorals, à deux claviers et pédale. Suivant l’exemple de Sweelinck, Scheidemann avait considérablement développé l’usage des échos entre deux claviers. Le deuxième verset de Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ (I) démontre la haute maîtrise de cette technique jubilatoire par Weckmannn. On peut mentionner également une certaine parenté entre le Magnificat de Weckmannn et les Magnificat sur les huit tons de Scheidemann.

Quelles sont ces « nouveautés plaisantes » dont parle Mattheson ? Sur le plan rythmique, Weckmannn fait preuve d’une invention étonnante, certainement liée à son expérience de la composition vocale et instrumentale. Les deux versets de Gott sei gelobet und gebenedeiet offrent une remarquable diversité de ces figures rythmiques. On trouve notamment dans le premier verset l’inclusion d’un fragment en 6/4 dans un contexte majoritairement binaire, caractéristique fréquente chez Weckmannn.

Certains manuscrits attestent d’une autre nouveauté, l’utilisation en solo de la trompette 16‘ (présente à l’Oberwerk sur son orgue de Saint-Jacques à Hambourg) à la main gauche, comme dans le troisième verset de Es ist das Heil uns kommen her et de O lux beata trinitas.

L’écriture à double pédalier était déjà utilisée par Samuel Scheidt, notamment ;

Weckmannn en développe l’usage, renforçant parfois au pied droit la voix de ténor (cantus firmus) jouée à la main gauche (premier verset du Magnificat et des deux grands cycles de choral).

Le Praeambulum à 5 voix se situe dans la lignée de Scheidemann, mais la virtuosité est accentuée et la structure (prélude, fugue binaire, fugue ternaire, coda) montre l’évolution qui va mener aux grands Praeludia de Buxtehude.

Schütz aura transmis à Weckmannn la musique vocale italienne ancienne et moderne, et Froberger l’héritage frescobaldien, très reconnaissable dans les toccatas pour clavecin et les Canzone, qui se jouent aussi bien à l’orgue qu’au clavecin.

De nombreuses pièces pour orgue sont écrites dans l’esprit de la Musica Poetica, selon e les principes rhétoriques qui guidaient les compositeurs allemands durant le XVII siècle. Les cycles de chorals abondent en figures musicales qui contribuent à surprendre l’auditeur, à accroître la tension, à souligner le sens d’un mot. Les deux premiers versets sur Komm, heiliger Geist, Herre Gott en offrent de magnifiques exemples.

On mentionnera également les recherches chromatiques, souvent liées à l’expression de la douleur. Le troisième verset de Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein donne lieu à un étrange traitement chromatique, sans équivalent dans la littérature nordique. Plus impressionnant encore est l’usage de la dissonance : le Magnificat et les deux derniers versets de O lux beata trinitas en offrent de saisissants exemples.

Ces recherches et ces « inventions » sont toujours liées à une volonté d’expression, à l’orgue comme dans les cantates. À ce sujet, Johann Mattheson rapporte une anecdote

Deux cycles d’une ampleur exceptionnelle Les deux grands cycles sur Es ist das Heil uns kommen her et O lux beata trinitas révèlent des caractéristiques et des qualités sans équivalent dans toute la musique d’orgue du e XVII siècle. Ces cycles, qui durent chacun environ une demi-heure, sont parmi les œuvres d’orgue les plus longues de l’époque baroque. Ils ne sont pas destinés à un usage liturgique, mais sont porteurs d’une forte dimension philosophique et théologique.

Dans son étude de l’œuvre de Weckmannn, Hans Davidsson a mis en évidence les dimensions rhétorique, symbolique et numérologique de Es ist das Heil. D’autre part, il a établi un lien extrêmement intéressant entre les théories d’Athanasius Kircher et la composition sur O lux beata trinitas. Dans son traité Musurgia Universalis paru à Rome en 1650, Kircher, jésuite, scientifique, théoricien de la musique et encyclopédiste, développe son idée de l’orgue cosmique, écrivant notamment : « Rien n’est plus semblable au monde visible que l’orgue… L’orgue est une réalisation miraculeuse de l’art. Qui niera que l’art de la facture d’orgues a été porté en notre temps à un sommet de perfection ? »

savoureuse : « Le célèbre organiste de l’église Saint-Jacques à Hambourg, Matthias Weckmannn, avait mis en musique certaines paroles du chapitre 63 du prophète Isaïe, il en avait composé et interprété le sens des mots de manière si expressive que le célèbre Juif converti Edzardi, licencié en arts, en donna témoignage : «Il a peint le Messie si clairement dans la voix de basse que c’était comme s’il l’avait vu de ses propres yeux.»»

Kircher compare les six jours de la Création aux six registres d’un orgue cosmique qui serait joué par le Créateur lui-même. La symbolique des nombres, très présente dans ce cycle, relie la composition de Weckmannn à la conception médiévale de la musique comme miroir de la perfection de la Création, reflétant les principes de l’Harmonie des sphères. Ce lien avec les théories de Kircher confère à l’œuvre de Weckmannn une dimension absolument exceptionnelle. Si le degré de complexité polyphonique peut être comparé aux dernières œuvres de Johann Sebastian Bach telles que L’Art de la Fugue, aucun autre compositeur d’orgue n’a atteint ce degré de fusion entre musique et philosophie cosmique.

Es ist das Heil uns kommen her Le texte du choral (Paul Speratus, 1523) comporte 14 strophes et s’inspire d’une épitre de saint Paul. Il traite un thème central de la pensée chrétienne, celui du salut par la foi. Weckmannn semble avoir choisi ici de traiter le choral non pas strophe par strophe, mais dans sa dimension théologique globale : Dieu nous accorde le salut en envoyant le Christ. Son sacrifice rend ainsi espoir aux hommes. Les œuvres ne suffisent pas ; c’est dans la Foi seulement que les hommes seront jugés devant Dieu.

Weckmannn compose sept versets : le chiffre 7 symbolise la grâce. Le cycle réunit le Stylus gravis (versets 1, 2 et 7) et le Stylus luxurians (les autres versets). Les canons occupent une place considérable, au risque de créer une certaine austérité pour des oreilles modernes : le canon est traditionnellement dans la musique luthérienne la représentation musicale de la Loi.

Le premier verset est à 5 voix et se joue « Im vollen Werck » (sur le plein-jeu). Le cantus firmus est joué au pédalier. Le deuxième verset, à trois voix, est un canon strict à deux voix sous le cantus firmus qui est au soprano.

Le troisième verset est écrit en style orné à deux claviers et pédale. Il fait appel à la trompette de 16’ à la main gauche, ce qui crée une impression de profondeur. L’écriture rythmique est particulièrement diversifiée, et à la mesure 48 apparaît un motif bondissant, qui pourrait illustrer la rédemption évoquée dans la seconde partie du texte de la strophe 7 : « Celui qui croit en toi et est baptisé / celui-là le Ciel l’accueillera / et il ne sera pas perdu ».

Le quatrième verset est à trois voix, deux sont en canon à l’octave et reposent sur le cantus firmus à la basse. De nombreux motifs syncopés créent une atmosphère qui correspond bien à l’évocation du péché dans la strophe 9. La deuxième partie voit l’apparition de motifs en forme de figura suspirans et d’une modulation très expressive sur les mots « Il [l’Evangile] dit : inclinez-vous maintenant devant la Croix » (« Es spricht nun kreuch zum Kreuz herzu »), suivie d’un épisode beaucoup plus rapide et détendu, en forme de danse.

Le cinquième verset est également à trois voix, mais ici le canon à la douzième entoure le cantus firmus qui est au ténor, position qui symbolise probablement le rôle de médiateur du Christ.

Le sixième verset est de loin le plus riche et le plus étonnant de tout le cycle. Il constitue à lui seul une « fantaisie de choral » à cinq voix (l’écriture passe à six voix vers la fin) qui dure quelque 10 minutes. Le texte de la strophe 13, suggéré par Davidsson, semble

donner un maximum de sens à l’écriture musicale, tant dans sa dimension de louange jubilatoire que dans maints détails musicaux (par exemple : l’évocation figurée du Père, du Fils et de l’Esprit) : « Gloire et Louange soient rendues pour cette bonne action / Dieu, le Père, le Fils et l’Esprit Saint / de sa grâce achève ce qu’il a commencé en nous / pour honorer sa Majesté / saint est son Nom. » Le septième et dernier verset est un grandiose postlude à six voix, dont deux au pédalier.

Il correspond vraisemblablement au sens de la quatorzième et ultime strophe, qui consiste en une paraphrase du Pater Noster.

O lux beata trinitas L’hymne attribuée à saint Ambroise comporte trois strophes dédiées à la Sainte Trinité. La première établit une analogie entre Dieu et la lumière : « Ô Trinité, lumière bienheureuse, unité primordiale, maintenant que le soleil se retire, illumine nos cœurs ».

Le compositeur s’inspire ici de l’opposition lumière-obscurité qui sous-tend la pensée chrétienne.

Weckmannn utilise essentiellement les nombres 3(symbole de la Trinité), 4 (le feu, les anges, les quatre éléments…) et 6 (le nombre de jours de la Création). Le cycle contient six versets, mais si on considère que le quatrième comporte quatre variations, le nombre total est de neuf (3 x 3).

Le premier verset est un grandiose prélude à cinq voix, qui se joue sur le plein-jeu. Dans son commentaire du premier jour de la Création, Anathasius Kircher décrit la création

de la Lumière ainsi que les neuf chœurs des anges et des bienheureux. Les mixtures du plein-jeu peuvent être interprétées comme l’allégorie sonore de ces neuf chœurs.

Le deuxième verset est une fugue d’une grande sobriété, à quatre voix. Le cantus firmus est confié à la partie supérieure, renvoyant peut-être à l’image du feu qui brille par-dessus la Création. Le commentaire de Kircher relate la création des quatre éléments : l’eau, la terre, l’air et le feu.

Pour le troisième verset, Weckmannn choisit le Stylus luxurians et nous propose une grande variété de figures. Un solo est confié à la main gauche (la tablature de Lunebourg indique la trompette 16’, mais nous avons choisi un Dulcian 16’ pour cet enregistrement), et le cantus firmus est joué au ténor par le pédalier. Le texte de Kircher mérite d’être cité ici dans son intégralité : « Le troisième registre du troisième jour, dès qu’il fut entonné, la terre, comme un orgue joué adroitement par un organiste, donna naissance à une multitude d’herbes, de plantes, de fleurs et de fruits qui se développaient par eux-mêmes.

Mais qu’est-ce que ceci aurait pu être d’autre que cette diversité de modulations, cadences et fugues de l’art de l’orgue divin qui, bien qu’elles soient très différenciées dans leurs natures et dissonantes l’une par rapport à l’autre, sont toutes magnifiques et ornées par l’omniscient Organiste, mélangées les unes aux autres de sorte qu’une merveilleuse harmonie en résulte. » Le quatrième verset est de loin le plus long, il est écrit sous forme de quatre variations, dont les deux premières sont en forme de bicinium (à la manière de Sweelinck) et les deux suivantes à trois voix, dont deux en canon à l’octave. Le cantus firmus est omniprésent

et ses valeurs longues contrastent avec l’agilité et la fluidité du contrepoint. Derrière l’apparente austérité de l’écriture, on perçoit un tournoiement qui n’est pas sans donner une certaine impression de vertige. Kircher commente pour sa part le quatrième jour comme celui de la création des astres : soleil, lune, planètes, étoiles. Il décrit le firmament orné d’étoiles et d’éclats lumineux innombrables : « Que cela signifie-t-il, sinon des mélodies harmoniques, cachées et situées sous les grandes consonances et dissonances du temps que sont la lumière du jour et l’obscurité de la nuit. » Hans Davidsson propose de voir dans la première variation l’unité fondamentale, celle de Dieu avec lui-même; dans la deuxième, celle des anges qui dansent en cercles constants autour du cantus firmus (qui symbolise Dieu) ; dans la troisième, il suggère l’unité du macrocosme (symbolisée par une danse merveilleusement ornée autour du cantus firmus), et dans la dernière, le microcosme, c’est-à-dire l’humanité.

Quelles que soient les représentations symboliques imaginées par Weckmannn, on se trouve ici face à une écriture d’autant plus élaborée qu’elle pourrait sembler, à première vue, d’une extrême simplicité.

Le cinquième verset est écrit pour deux claviers et pédalier. Le cinquième jour voit l’apparition de la vie sur la terre. Kircher parle des « lois d’accord et de dissension, d’amour et de haine, d’où proviennent une harmonie et une symphonie miraculeusement dérivées de la consonance et de la dissonance » entre êtres vivants. La musique semble s’éloigner de l’harmonie céleste qui précédait pour revêtir une dimension plus mélancolique et plus troublée où dissonances et consonances, tensions et détentes vont alterner ou même

se superposer. Davidsson suggère de lire à partir de la mesure 57 une représentation musicale du Père, suivie de celle du Fils (en rythme ternaire) et enfin de l’Esprit (en figures extrêmement fluides à la manière d’un grand vent…).

Le sixième et dernier verset est un grandiose postlude à cinq voix sur le plein-jeu. Il présente des motifs mélodiques descendants, entraînés par le cantus firmus joué dans le grave du pédalier. Ce verset est tout sauf triomphant : il regorge de syncopes, de retards, de dissonances, de mouvements chromatiques exacerbés, pour finalement se résoudre sur un grandiose accord de sol majeur. Faut-il y voir une vision – tragique – de l’humanité ? Ou une représentation des forces du Mal ? On se trouve en tout cas assez loin de la joyeuse description par Kircher de la création de l’homme et de l’harmonie grandiose produite par l’orgue cosmique…

Cette musique demeure mystérieuse et n’a certainement pas dévoilé tous ses secrets.

Qu’en ont compris les contemporains de Weckmannn ? Nous n’en avons pas la moindre trace. Il nous reste à contempler, à méditer, à questionner ce qui nous parvient de cette œuvre à travers les siècles.

Hambourg, bien qu’ultérieurement transformé par Arp Schnitger. Wolfgang Zerer y a réalisé une remarquable intégrale de l’œuvre d’orgue de Weckmannn.

Pour enregistrer les grandes œuvres, j’ai choisi un autre instrument hambourgeois, celui de Sainte-Catherine, construit et agrandi par les plus facteurs d’orgue hambourgeois, Hans Scherer l’Ancien, Gottfried Fritzsche et Friedrich Stellwagen. Il comptait 58 registres répartis sur quatre claviers et pédale, et c’était le plus grand orgue de la ville. Heinrich Scheidemann en a été le titulaire durant plusieurs décennies, et Weckmannn l’a certainement entendu sous ses doigts. Cet orgue a été profondément altéré durant les siècles suivants et quasi détruit durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, mais la firme Flentrop lui a rendu tout son lustre au terme d’une restauration/reconstruction où tous les éléments historiques (notamment quelque 520 tuyaux provenant d’un grand nombre de jeux anciens) ont soigneusement été étudiés avant d’être restaurés et de servir de référence à la reconstitution de l’instrument.

Deux autres instruments historiques ont été enregistrés : celui de l’église Saint Cosme à Stade (conçu par Berendt Huss et terminé par son disciple Arp Schnitger) et celui construit par Arp Schnitger dans l’église de Hollern, récemment restauré par Hendrik Ahrend.

L’œuvre de Weckmannn résonne ainsi sur trois orgues différents, du petit orgue de Hollern qui bénéficie d’une acoustique très transparente, à l’orgue monumental de Sainte-Catherine à Hambourg.

Als Matthias Weckmann am 1. März 1674, also fünf Tage nach seinem Tod am 24. Februar 1674, in der Jacobikirche zu Hamburg beerdigt wurde, war mit ihm eine der letzten großen Persönlichkeiten der hamburgisch-hanseatischen Musiktradition verschieden.

Christoph Bernhard (1627-1692), 1663-1674 Kantor der Hamburger Hauptkirchen und Weckmanns «liertzens-Freund», schätzte die musikalische Zukunft Hamburgs nach Weckmanns Tod so ein: «Die Music wird wieder fallen, wie sie in 14 Jahren an diesem Ohrte gestiegen. Man wird künftig sich nicht bemühen umb rechtschaffene Leute ein Verlangen zu haben, die Gunst wird mehr als Geschicklichkeit eines Mannes angesehen», und «gleich wie anitzo die musicalische Harmoni (niedergehet) durch Abgehung solcher Männer, die capabel ferner sie zu erhalten, so wird es auch mit der guten Stadt Harnburg im Regiment gehen, solches kan ich mercken an die Ufführung der jungen Leute, so noch hoffen künfftig bey dem Regiment zu kommen. In Zeit von 20 Jahren wird man es erfahren.»

Bernhards Bemerkungen sind in mehrfacher Hinsicht interessant. Er gibt nicht nur eine recht genaue Einschätzung der politischen Entwicklung in der Hansestadt Hamburg für die nächsten zwanzig Jahre (!), sondern darüber hinaus eine pessimistische Sicht auf die weitere musikalische Entwicklung der Folgezeit. Tatsächlich war nur noch Johann Adam Reinken als bedeutender, über die Stadtgrenzen hinaus wirkender Musi-

ker in Hamburg geblieben. Die Hochblüte der hamburgischen Musikkultur, mit der auffälligen Häufung hervorragender Musiker, vertreten durch die Familie Praetorius, durch Scheidemann, Schop und Selle, war vorbei.

Diese Blüte erreichte nach Ansicht zeitgenössischer Chronisten ihren Höhepunkt in den gemeinsamen Werken Weckmanns und später Bernhards, nicht nur in den regelmäßig gemeinsam gestalteten Gottesdiensten in der Jacobikirche, an der Weckmann als Organist und Kirchenschreiber wirkte, sondern vor allem in dem von Weckmann 1660 ins Leben gerufenen «Collegium musicum». Dieses war sicher nicht eine im heutigen Sinne «öffentlich»wirkende Vereinigung von Musikern, sondern ein von höchsten gesellschaftlichen Kreisen unterstütztes Ensemble, das wohl in sehr starkem Maße experimentell wirkte, und zwar in dem Sinne, dass hier die neuesten Kompositionsstile, Kompositionen (vor allem italienische und deutsche) und Aufführungspraktiken einem interessierten Publikum von «Kennern und Liebhabern» zu Gehör gebracht wurden. So fanden hier Aufführungen geistlicher und weltlicher Werke statt, die zum Teil eigens für diesen Zweck bei den Komponisten und Höfen angefordert wurden und z.B. von Weckmann auch selbst in Partitur gebracht wurden.

Matthias Weckmann wurde 1615/16 in Niederdorla, einem kleinen Ort in der Nähe von Mühlhausen/Thüringen, als Sohn eines, auch literarisch tätigen Pfarrers geboren. Über Matthias’ Jugend ist wenig bekannt. Auch vom Beginn seiner musikalischen Ausbildung weiß man nichts, jedoch brachte ihn sein Vater, wahrscheinlich 1628 zur musikalischen Weiterbildung nach Dresden, dem Sitz des kursächsischen Hofes. Hier

wirkte als bedeutendster höfischer Musiker seiner Zeit der Hofkapellmeister Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), der in diesem Jahr zu seiner zweiten Italienreise aufbrach, während der er wahrscheinlich Claudio Monteverdi begegnete. Nach Schütz’ Rückkehr 1629 dürfte er die Ausbildung Weckmanns, der inzwischen für eine Sängerlaufbahn ausersehen war, persönlich übernommen haben. Die kurze Sängerkarriere Weckmanns ist durch sein Mitwirken als Solist der Hofkapelle unter Schütz bei der musikalischen Ausgestaltung des Treffens der protestantischen Kurfürsten mit dem schwedischen König Gustav Adolf in Leipzig im April 1631 dokumentiert.An diesem Punkt beginnen sich die Folgen des Dreißigjährigen Krieges deutlich auf Weckmanns Leben auszuwirken.

Sachsen, der wichtigste protestantische (lutherische) Staat im deutschen Reich, stand unter der Führung seines sauf- und jagdlustigen Kurfürsten Johann Georg I. bislang auf Seiten des habsburgischen Kaisers Ferdinand II, eines Herrschers, der alles daran setzte, der Gegenreformation zum Sieg zu verhelfen. Nachdem der schwedische König 1631 erfolgreich in den Krieg eingetreten war und der Kaiser die Rückerstattung sämtlicher ehemals katholischer Güter verlangte, wurde auch dem sächsischen Kurfürsten der Boden zu heiß. Zum Zweck eines Bündnisses aller protestantischen Kräfte wurde das Treffen in Leipzig arrangiert. Auch diese Zusammenkunft konnte jedoch nicht verhindern, dass Sachsen Durchzugsgebiet der kämpfenden Armeen wurde. Die politische und wirtschaftliche Lage wurde zunehmend schwieriger. Für die Hofkapelle begann eine langjährige Phase der wirtschaftlichen Nöte, gekennzeichnet vor allem durch

zunehmende Gehaltsrückstände der Musiker.

So muss es als besonderer Beweis für die großen Fähigkeiten Weckmanns gelten, dass der Kurfürst ihm trotzdem ein monatliches Stipendium bewilligte (und vor allem: auch zahlte !). Dieses Stipendium diente dem Orgelstudium bei Jacob Praetorius in Hamburg (?-1651), einem der größten Organisten seiner Zeit, der selbst bei Sweelinck studiert hatte. Die reiche Handelsstadt, beherrscht durch eine Oligarchie von Kaufmannsfamilien, leistete sich ein reichhaltiges musikalisches «Interieur», speziell auf dem Gebiet der Kirchenmusik und der Ratsmusik. Die Organisten der Hauptkirchen bezogen außerordentlich hohe Gehälter und genossen ein hohes gesellschaftliches Ansehen.

Auf dem Wege nach Dänemark brachte Schütz persönlich Weckmann zu Praetorius und damit auch vor dem Krieg in Sicherheit. Nach etwa drei Jahren, in denen Weckmann auch Gelegenheit hatte, Scheidemanns Orgelkunst kennenzulernen, endete Weckmanns erster Hamburger Aufenthalt. Die Rückkehr nach Dresden war jedoch nicht von Dauer, denn Schütz, der seine «besten musicalischen Sachen» am Hofe in Kopenhagen zurückgelassen hatte, erhielt vom Kurfürsten keine Erlaubnis, diese dort persönlich abzuholen. Statt dessen wurde Weckmann auf den Weg nach Norden geschickt; eine gute Gelegenheit für den etwa Zwanzigjährigen, nach der Musikstadt Hamburg nun den musikliebenden dänischen Hof kennen zu lernen.

Obwohl der dänische König Christian IV. außenpolitisch kaum Positives für sein Reich bewirkte und auch in den von ihm geführten Kriegen letztlich erfolglos blieb, war er im

Gegensatz zum sächsischen Kurfürsten bereit und in der Lage, erhebliche finanzielle Mittel in Kunst und Musik zu investieren. Für dieses Mal blieb der Aufenthalt in Dänemark nur ein Intermezzo. Weckmann mußte nach Dresden zurückkehren. Ende 1638 wurde in Dresden die Hochzeit des Kurprinzen gefeiert. Anläßlich dieses auch im Rahmen des dreißigjährigen Kriegs politisch sehr wichtigen Ereignisses wurde wohl die Hofkapelle des Kurprinzen gegründet. In dieser wirkte Weckmann als Organist, mußte aber auch dem Kurfürsten aufwarten. Weckmann wurde im September 1641 auch als kurfürstlicher Hoforganist bestellt und erteilte ab dem folgenden Jahr auf Veranlassung von Schütz Unterricht im Singen und im Orgelspiel.

1642 betrug der Rückstand der Gehaltszahlungen drei Jahre. So kam es (sicher auch dem Kurfürsten, dessen Trinkfreude ihm den Spitznamen «Blerjörge» einbrachte) sehr gelegen, dass der dänische König Heinrich Schütz und die besten Musiker der Hofkapelle vom Kurfürsten erbat. Anlass für diesen Wunsch war die Doppelhochzeit der Töchter des Königs, die im November 1642 stattfand. Weckmann konnte in Dänemark einige Jahre bleiben und erwarb sich dort hohes Ansehen. Der fruchtbare Austausch mit anderen Musikern, der musikliebende Hof und auch die relativ kriegsferne Umgebung (abgesehen vom dänisch-schwedischen Krieg der 40er Jahre), all dies muss Dänemark, verglichen mit Dresden, zu einem Paradies für Weckmann gemacht haben.

1646 „forderte“ der sächsische Hofe Weckmann «zurück». Im April 1647 wurden die Pässe ausgefertigt. Weckmann begleitete wohl den kurfürstlichen Hof - der Kurprinz

reiste nach Karlsbad. Unterwegs, in Hamburg, beendete Weckmann einen Band mit Abschriften von Kompositionen u.a. Monteverdis. Der dänische Kronprinz starb auf der Reise am 1. Juli 1647 in der Nähe von Dresden, und so scheint es naheliegend anzunehmen, dass Weckmann mit dem Trauerzug nach Dänemark zurückkehrte, zumal er in Sachsen kaum vonnöten war. Dort herrschte bis Ende des Jahres Staatstrauer mit Verbot des Orgel- und Instrumentalspieles (der dänische Kronprinz war Schwager des -sächsischen Kurfürsten).

Während des neuerlichen Aufenthalts im Norden heiratete Weckmann 1648 in Lübeck Regina Beute, die Tochter eines Ratsmusikers. Sein Trauzeuge war Franz Tunder, der Organist der Marienkirche. Wieder in Dresden wurde Weckmann «Inspector» der Kurfürstlichen Kapelle. Im August desselben Jahres wurde Christoph Bernhard als «Musico und Singer“ in die Hofkapelle aufgenommen. Zwischen beiden Musikern entwickelte sich eine lebenslange Freundschaft und Zusammenarbeit. Kurze Zeit später traf Johann Jacob Froberger (1616-1667), der kaiserliche Organist und Cembalist, in Dresden ein. Er hatte Weckmanns Namen schon am kaiserlichen Hofe rühmen hören und wollte die Gelegenheit nutzen, ihn kennen zu lernen. Der Kurfürst schlug ein Wettspiel vor, das Weckmann gewann. Durch diesen Wettstreit errang Weckmann die Anerkennung und dauerhafte Freundschaft Frobergers, die zum Austausch von Briefen und Musikalien führte.

In der Hofkapelle blieb zumindest für die einheimischen Musiker die wirtschaftliche Notlage bestehen. Trotzdem dauerte es noch bis 1655 bis sich Weckmann dazu

entschloss, sich um eine freigewordene Stelle zu bewerben: St. Jacobi in Hamburg.

Weckmann war durch freundschaftliche Beziehungen zu dieser Bewerbung aufgefordert worden. Unter einem Vorwand erbat er sich Urlaub und bestand ein über die Maßen glänzendes Probespiel vor den kritischen Ohren von Scheidemann, Schop, Selle und Johann Praetorius, dem Bruder seines früheren Hamburger Lehrers Jacob Praetorius.

Der Hamburger Rat bat daraufhin den sächsischen Kurfürsten um Weckmanns Entlassung nach Hamburg. Weckmann übersiedelte nach Hamburg, wo er nicht nur Organist an der Jacobiorgel und deren Filialkapelle St. Gertrud wurde, sondern auch Kirchenschreiber dieser Kirchen. Dieses Amt eines Art Oberbuchhalters der Kirche übte Weckmann bis Ende 1670 aus.

Weckmanns Hamburger Zeit scheint äußerlich ruhig verlaufen zu sein, geprägt von der Organistentätigkeit und dem Aufbau des «Collegium musicum» (s. oben). Trotz seiner Bedeutung scheint er nur wenige Schüler gehabt zu haben, unter ihnen jedoch Jacob Kortkamp, der sein erster, verlässlicher Biograph wurde. Im Familien- und Freundeskreis nahmen im Lauf der Jahre naturgemäß Trauerfälle zu, darunter neben einigen der Kindersterblichkeit zum Opfer fallenden Kindern, Weckmanns erste Frau (1665), sein Bruder Andreas (1662), infolge der Pest der Jahre 1663/4 Heinrich Scheidemann und Thomas Selle, 1667 J.J. Froberger. 1664 kaufte Weckmann ein Familiengrab, das sich in der Jacobikirche unterhalb der von ihm gespielten Orgel befindet.

Die letzten Jahre Weckmanns, ab 1671, scheinen von Erschöpfung geprägt zu sein.

Weckmann konnte die Buchhaltung der Kirche, den Kirchenschreiberdienst, nicht

mehr versehen. Den Organistendienst scheint er aber gleichwohl noch ausgeübt zu haben.

Geistlichen Werken Diese Produktion ist eine Gesamtaufnahme der genannten geistlichen Vokalmusik Matthias Weckmann’s. Übrigens möchten wir darauf hinweisen, dass sich in den Bibliotheken, die die Quellen zu diesen Kantaten besitzen, zwei der wichtigsten Bestände dieser Zeit befinden: die berühmte Düben-Sammlung in Uppsala und Bokemeyer in Berlin. Die einzigen Handschriften von Matthias Weckmann sind jedoch in der Ratsbücherei von Lüneburg erhalten. Diese 1663 datierten Manuskripte enthalten vier Kantaten, deren Qualität und Ausdrucksstärke besonders auffallend sind: Weine nicht, Zion spricht, Herr wenn ich, Wie liegt die Stadt. Bemerkenswert ist dabei, dass wir uns dank dieser wenigen Werke gleichzeitig der stilistischen Einheitlichkeit und der Verschiedenartigkeit der Gattungen bewusst werden können.

Dem Hörer dieser Aufnahme werden gewisse äußerst moderne Aspekte der Harmonie bestimmt auffallen. Weckmann benutzt für seine Zeit sehr gewagte Akkorde,

ein Chromatik, die der Musik Spannung verleiht. An einigen Stellen gehen diese Extravaganzen so weit, dass der Komponist auf der Partitur „N B“ (nota bene) angibt und damit die Musiker darauf aufmerksam macht, dass die Dissonanz wohl überlegt ist, selbst wenn ihnen das nach den üblichen Regeln merkwürdig erscheinen kann.

Bei der Aufeinanderfolge der Stücke wollten wir die einzige Quelle - anscheinend die Handschrift - berücksichtigen. Tatsächlich scheinen die vier Werke der Bibliothek von Lüneburg einen wahrhaftigen Kantatenzyklus zu bilden. Der Ausdruck «Kantate» ist dabei nicht ganz richtig, da Weckmann wahrscheinlich unter dem Einfluß der ihm (unter anderem durch Schütz bekannten italienischen Modelle seinen Werken den Titel «Concerto» gibt; Die Werke sind nummeriert und zwei davon auch datiert: Zion spricht (9. Februar 1663), Wie liegt die Stadt (15. August 1663). Am Ende dieses Werks steht ein anderes Datum (14. Oktober 1663), das möglicherweise die Vollendung der Komposition angibt. Kann man daraus schließen, dass diese besonders ausgearbeitete Komposition in dieser Zeitspanne geschrieben wurde? Außerdem steht vor dem ersten Datum die Bemerkung «Cum JESU Bono». Es ist durchaus möglich, dass Weckmann das Bedürfnis hatte, von Gott unterstützt zu werden, um dieses Werk beenden zu können. Die Pest hatte in diesem Jahr in Hamburg gewütet. Die bemerkenswerte Wahl der Texte ist anscheinend an diese traurigen Umstände gebunden; trotz seines Schmerzes will der Gläubige sein Vertrauen auf Gott bewahren und bittet ihn um Trost und Ewigkeit.

Zahlreiche Aspekte dieser vier Konzerte sind bemerkenswert. Sie benötigen ein

großes Instrumentalensemble (2 oder 3 Geigen, 3 Gamben und Continuo). Diesen Instrumenten sind bedeutende, unabhängige Teile anvertraut, die als Einleitung oder Ritornell zwischen den gesungenen Strophen dienen. Einige dieser Ritornelle sind sehr ausdrucksstark und beziehen sich direkt auf den Text (besonders in den Concerti I und IV). Andererseits begleiten die Instrumente auch die Singstimme und verleihen so der Partitur eine bedeutende Dimension.

Weine nicht ist zweifellos in dieser Hinsicht das eindrucksvollste Concerto. Zwei große Sinfonias gehen dem Gesang von Alt und Bass voran, bevor die Instrumente mit ihrem dritten Eingriff den Schlachtenstil anklingen lassen, der auf den Worten «es hat überwunden der Löwe vom Stamm Juda» dominierend ist. Was das «Amen» betrifft, so ist es auf ein für eine italienische «Ciaccona» typisches Ostinato geschrieben (einen Bass, den man in zahlreichen Werken des beginnenden 17. Jh.s unter anderen bei Monteverdi findet). Bei der Verwendung der Instrumente ist auch die außergewöhnliche Perfektion der Stellen hervorzuheben, in denen die Instrumente einen großartigen Kontrapunkt um eine einzelne Stimme weben. Das ist auf die Worte «kann auch eine leibliche Mutter» des II. Concertos besonders bemerkenswert. Was die Ausdrucksstärke betrifft, so ist sicherlich Wie liegt die Stadt ein Höhepunkt. Offensichtlich zeigt Weckmann hier, was er vom italienischen «Madrigalismus» lernen konnte. Es genügt, der Klage des Soprans zuzuhören, der zu Beginn der Kantate voll Ergriffenheit die öd daliegende Stadt schildert. Und dieser Effekt ist sicher noch eindrucksvoller, wenn die Interpreten den Wunsch des Autors berücksichtigen, der angibt, dass der Sopran weit vom Bass

entfernt stehen soll. Dieser theatralische Effekt ist natürlich nur im Konzert wirklich möglich; man kann sich vorstellen, welchen Eindruck diese von fern tönende Stimme erweckt. Wenn man das mit der Kenntnis der Effekte des Madrigalismus in Verbindung setzen kann, so muss man zugeben, dass Weckmann auch die italienische Gesangskunst kannte (und zwar zweifellos durch Christoph Bernhardt): «Sie weinet des Nachts» mit seinen Verzierungen und in Art des «Trillo» wiederholten Noten... Doch all diese Kenntnisse werden für eine Musik von großer Gefühlsstärke verwendet: hören Sie der Vox Christi (Bass) «Euch sage ich», einem von den Streichern begleiteten Arioso, zu oder aber der schmerzlichen Anrufung des sündigen Jerusalems «Jerusalem hat sich versündiget» ...

Die italienischen Modelle finden sich auch in anderen Werken wieder, und zwar ganz besonders in den zwei geistlichen Geschichten (Dialog des Tobias und der Rachel, Verkündigungsdialog.) Man kann sich vorstellen mit welcher Begeisterung Christoph Bernhardt Weckmann seine Begegnung mit Carissimi geschildert hat!

Wenn uns auch Angaben zur Datierung der Werke Weckmanns fehlen, so ist es dennoch möglich, gewisse Vermutungen auszusprechen. Die Qualität der vokalen und instrumentalen Komposition, die Reichhaltigkeit der Harmonien können uns darauf hinweisen, dass Wenn der Herr und Kommet her zu mir alle zu den Werken der Reiseperiode in Hamburg (der Zeit der 4 Concerti) zählen. Die anderen Kantaten sind vielleicht älter. Die beiden lateinischen Werke sind mit ihren kleinen, zwischen den Strophen eingefügten Ritornellen, die weder die Kraft noch die Phantasie, noch die

ausgesuchten Harmonien der anderen Kantaten besitzen, einfacherer Art. Und diese Bemerkung gilt auch für die gesungenen Strophen. Dagegen zeigt uns die Kantate über den Kampf des heiligen Michael, Es erhub sich ein Streit, einen ganz anderen Aspekt von Weckmanns Werk. Hier erkennen wir den Schüler von Schütz; es handelt sich eigentlich um einen dreifachen Chor, ein großer vierstimmiger Chor, ein fünfstimmiger Chor der Solisten (Favorit-Chor) und ein Chor von Instrumenten (2 Geigen, 3 Posaunen) und Basso continuo. Diesen majestätischen Stil verwendete Schütz in seinen Psalmen Davids (1619), die zu den überzeugendsten Ergebnissen seiner Assimilation der venezianischen Mehrchörigkeit zählt.

Matthias Weckmann gehört zweifellos zu den Hauptzeugen des deutschen Musiklebens der ersten Hälfte des XVII. Jahrhunderts. Den aus Thüringen stammenden Komponisten führte seine Karriere nach Dresden, an den dänischen Hof, nach Lübeck und schließlich nach Hamburg, wo er Organist der Jacobi-Kirche wurde. Unter seinen Lehrern müssen natürlich Heinrich Schütz und der Organist Jacob Praetorius genannt werden. Wenn man seine Biographie liest, stellt man außerdem fest, daß er die Gelegenheit hatte, eine eindrucksvolle Anzahl an Musikern wie Tunder, Scheidemann, Bernhardt, Selle und Froberger kennenzulernen. Für das Programm dieser Aufnahme istnatürlich der Kontakt mit Froberger besonders bedeutend.

Die beiden Musiker haben das gleiche Alter. Leider kennen wir aber das genaue Datum ihrer Begegnung nicht; sie hat jedoch bestimmt nach seiner Rückkehr aus Lübeck stattgefunden, wo er 1648 geheiratet hatte, und vor seiner Abreise nach Hamburg im Jahre 1655; die neuesten Untersuchungen setzen sie vor Februar 1650 an. Vor dieser Zeit hatte sich Johann Jacob Froberger schon mehrere Jahre lang in Rom aufgehalten, wo Frescobaldi ihm Unterricht erteilt hatte. Anläßlich eines zweiten Romaufenthalts kurz vor 1649 hatte er zweifellos mit Carissimi Kontakt.

Der Aufenthalt in Dresden fällt mit einem besonders komplizierten Moment in Frobergers Leben zusammen. Es ist wahrscheinlich, daß die lange Reisezeit auch an eine diplo-

matische Mission gebunden war, mit der er vom Kaiser beauftragt war. Einige genaue Daten sagen uns Näheres über diese Zeit: Brüssel 1650, Paris 1652 (wo er Louis Couperin, Chambonnières, Gallot und Denis Gaultier kennenlernte), London, wo er die Plainte faite à Londres pour passer le Mélancolie (sic) schrieb. Es wäre daher interessant zu wissen, ab welchem genauen Zeitpunkt er den französischen Stil und den der “Suiten” so vollkommen beherrschte : vor oder nach seinem Pariser Aufenthalt, denn bei seinem “Rezital” in Dresden standen auch Suiten auf dem Programm.

Von dieser Begegnung zwischen Froberger und Weckmann am Hof von Dresden berichtet uns Johann Mattheson genau im Jahre 1740. Der Kurfürst von Sachsen wollte die beiden Künstler zu einer Art Wettbewerb auffordern. Doch achtete er darauf, Weckmannn zu bitten, in seinem Spiel bescheiden zu bleiben, um den Organisten des Kaisers nicht zu übertrumpfen! Froberger spielte mehrere Stücke aus seinem eigenen Repertoire (Toccaten, Capriccios, Ricercare und Suiten); dagegen war die Antwort Weckmanns eine lange Improvisation auf eines der von Froberger gespielten Themen.

Und danach unterhielten die beiden Musiker freundschaftliche Beziehungen! Es scheint offensichtlich, daß diese Gegenüberstellung Weckmann erlaubt hat, über zahlreiche neue Musikmodelle für Tasteninstrumente zu verfügen, besonders bei den für das Cembalo bestimmten Werken. Doch darf man sich von dieser Anekdote nicht täuschen lassen; vergessen wir nicht, daß Weckmann Erbe der Organistentradition Norddeutschlands bzw. Sweelincks war. Außerdem scheint seine Kenntnis des französischen Stils weit mehr von der Kunst der Lautenspieler des beginnenden XVII. Jahrhunderts beeinflußt zu sein

als von der der Cembalospieler der Mitte des Jahrhunderts (wie etwa Louis Couperin).

Diese CD ist eine Gesamtaufnahme aller Kompositionen Weckmanns für Cembalo.

Selbstverständlich können einige Kompositionen, die nur für Clavier (ohne Pedalklaviatur) bestimmt sind, ganz wie im Werk Frobergers (oder seines italienischen Meisters Frescobaldi) als Orgel- oder Cembalokompositionen betrachtet werden. Wir fanden es auch wichtig, die Interpretation gewisser Stück dem Clavichord anzuvertrauen, das im XVII. Jahrhundert ein sehr häufig gespieltes Instrument war.

Was die formale und stilistische Seite betrifft, so ist es auffallend, daß Weckmann die verschiedenen Stücke sehr verschiedenartig aufbaut, was natürlich von den zahlreichen Einflüssen zeugt, die seine Ausbildung geprägt haben.

Im Bereich der Suiten (hier muß darauf aufmerksam gemacht werden, daß die Bezeichnung Suite nirgends in den Handschriften aufscheint) ist eine Unregelmäßigkeit in der Reihenfolge, in der die Tänze aufeinanderfolgen, festzustellen. so findet sich die Gigue manchmal auf dem zweiten Platz nach der Allemande. Der Double der Sarabande der c-Moll-Suite ist wiederum sehr typisch für den Stil der Lautenspieler.

Die Toccaten weisen sehr kontrastreiche stilistische Aspekte auf. Jeder entspricht einem besonderen Schema: wenn die Toccata in C eine relativ fortlaufende Entwicklung in einer ziemlich brillanten Atmosphäre hat, so führt jene in a-Moll unaufhörlich von einer Überraschung zur anderen und erinnert darin zweifellos eher an Frescobaldis Vorbild.

Die Toccata in E-Dur scheint instrumentaler zu sein, denn ihre virtuosen Läufe kann

man mit dem Geist des Stylus fantasticus in Zusammenhang bringen, den J.S. Bach bei seinem Aufenthalt in Hamburg und Lübeck entdecken sollte. Andere sind deutlicher in verschiedenen Abschnitten aufgebaut: das ist der Fall der Toccata in e-Moll, in der sich nach einer Passage in freier Kompositionsweise eine Fuge und darauf ein Stück im imitativen Canzona-Stil entwickeln. Das gilt auch für die Toccata vel Praeludium, die in ihrem Zentrum einen langen fugierten Teil enthält und in der der alternative Titel Praeludium den Einfluß der Organisten der Sweelinck-Schule bestätigt.

Auch die Canzonen sind sehr verschieden. Sie enthalten mehrere Abschnitte in imitativer Kompositionsweise, die manchmal kurz in einem freieren Stil schließen: in der italienischen Tradition wird jeder Abschnitt in einer anderen rhythmischen Proportion, d.h. im Zweier- oder Dreierrhythmus, geschrieben. Selbstverständlich muß der Canzona in c-Moll ein besonderer Platz eingeräumt werden. Ihre drei Teile bauen auf demselben thematischen Motiv auf, das in drei verschiedenen Arten behandelt wird, wobei für den Mittelteil ein Gigue-Rhythmus verwendet wird; in gewisser Hinsicht handelt es sich um eine Mischung des Canzona-Geistes mit dem der Variationen.

Unter den Cembalo-Werken Weckmanns befinden sich auch zwei Stücke, die man als Variationen (im Geist dessen, was man oft in Deutschland Partita nennt) betrachten kann. Lucidor schließt sehr deutlich an den Variationsstil von Sweelinck an. Dagegen künden Die lieblichen Blicken sehr deutlich den Partitenstil der zweiten Hälfte des XVII. Jahrhunderts an; die zweite Variation ist ein typischer «Double» mit seinen Motiven aus Sechzehntelnoten, während die dritte ein Thema in einem Dreierrhythmus entwickelt.

Ganz wie in seinen Vokalwerken und Sonaten erscheint Weckmann zwar hier als ein aufmerksamer Beobachter der Stile, die das musikalische Schaffen des beginnenden XVII. Jahrhunderts beeinflussen, doch zeigt er sich auch als einer der Hauptschöpfer jener großen Tradition, die in der Generation Buxtehudes und den Meistern von Johann Sebastian Bach gipfelt.

Abgesehen von Klavierstücken (Cembalo und Orgel) enthält das Werk Matthias Weckmanns etliche Kammermusik-Kompositionen. Diese zehn Sonaten sind alle für eine ganz eigenartige Besetzung geschrieben: acht davon für vier obligate Cornettino -Parts (ein kleiner Zink in D), für Geige, Fagott, Posaune und Basso continuo, wobei die handschriftlichen Quellen auch eine Alternative für die Posaune vorschlagen, die von einer Bratsche (Viola da bracci) ersetzt, während der Fagott-Part auch von einer Baßpommer übernommen werden kann. Die beiden anderen Sonaten sind Trios für Cornettino, Geige und Basso continuo. Eine solche Besetzung ist ganz außergewöhnlich.

Allerdings ist zu erwähnen, daß gerade diese vier Instrumente in den italienischen Kirchen seit dem Ende des XVI. Jahrhunderts am meisten verwendet wurden. Im ersten Viertel des XVII. Jahrhunderts wird eine solche Besetzung von einigen Komponisten

italienischer Abstammung, die in Österreich und Süddeutschland wirken, eingesetzt: von Biagio Marini in Neuburg, Giovanni Valentini und Marc-Antonio Ferro in Wien und danach von ihren einheimischen Erben Johann Heinrich Schmelzer oder JohannJoseph Fux. Bei all diesen Kompositionen werden die vier Musiker als gleichwertige Virtuosen betrachtet. Es ist daher sehr wahrscheinlich daß Weckmann diese außergewöhnliche Art von Besetzung durch Froberger kennengelernt hatte.

Im Jahre 1655 ließ sich Weckmann endgültig in Hamburg nieder, wo er einen Posten an der Jacobikirche erhielt. 1660 gründete er gemeinsam mit Christoph Bernhardt das Collegium Musicum. Diese Musikinstitution vereinte Musiker und ein sehr aufmerksames Publikum in Hinblick auf eine sehr weit entwickelte, um nicht zu sagen experimentelle, Musikausübung. In diesem Rahmen wurde sowohl geistliche als auch weltliche Musik gespielt; man führte dort die jüngsten Kompositionen deutscher aber auch italienischer Komponisten auf. Es ist daher anzunehmen, daß die Musiker dieses Collegium Musicums unter den bedeutendsten Virtuosen der Stadt ausgewählt wurden.

All diese Sonaten sind in gleicher Weise aufgebaut. Sie enthalten mehrere langsame oder schnelle Abschnitte, die oft aneinandergereiht sind und zahlreiche imitative Teile besitzen, in denen alle Instrumente die gleiche Verantwortung übernehmen.

Die homophonen Stellen erlauben, einerseits schöne harmonische, manchmal sehr ausdrucksstarke Kontraste zu bilden, und andererseits majestätische Ensembles, deren Charakter dem Geist der “Schlachten» nahe steht.

Die Triosonaten haben bescheidenere Ausmaße. Wir haben die Gelegenheit einer

Die Liedern Neben diesen Sonaten besteht das Profanwerk Weckmanns auch aus einigen kleinen Liedern, die für ganz besondere Anlässe komponiert und jeweils verschiedenen Personen seines Hamburger Bekanntenkreises gewidmet wurden. Für jedes davon haben wir aus den zahlreichen dafür vorgesehenen Strophen zwei oder drei ausgewählt. Das zeugt zweifellos von der Offenheit und Herzlichkeit der Beziehungen, die Weckmann wohl mit diesen verschiedenen Personen unterhielt. Kleine Anekdoten, die diesen Musiker des XVII. Jahrhunderts gewiß noch lebendiger erscheinen lassen...

DAS ORGELWERK  Matthias Weckmannns nimmt in der deutschen Musik des 17. Jh. eine ganz eigene Stellung ein: Seine Vokalmusik ist von außergewöhnlicher Ausdruckskraft, seine Instrumentalwerke sowohl kunstvoll, als auch ansprechend und virtuos. Noch bemerkenswerter ist aber sein Orgelwerk: Zwischen den Kompositionen der Generation von Jacob Praetorius und Heinrich Scheidemann einerseits und der von Johann Adam Reinken und Dietrich Buxtehude andererseits entstanden, zeichnet es sich durch die Vielfalt der Ausdrucksweisen und Affetti, durch die Mischung von Ernst und Virtuosität, durch einen außergewöhnlichen kontrapunktischen Reichtum, durch eine starke theologische Verankerung sowie durch eine spekulative Dimension aus, die es sowohl mit den größten Polyphonisten des ausgehenden Mittelalters als auch mit den letzten Werken Johann Sebastian Bachs verbindet.

Matthias Weckmannn galt zu seinen Lebzeiten und bis in die Mitte des folgenden Jahrhunderts als einer der größten Orgelmeister. Sein Œuvre hat jedoch in unserer Zeit noch nicht die Anerkennung gefunden, die es verdient. Im zwanzigsten Jahrhundert blieb es von den meisten Musikwissenschaftlern unbeachtet oder unverstanden. Trotz der hervorragenden (1) Arbeit von Hans Davidsson in den Bereichen der Musikwissenschaft und der Orgel, wird es auch heute noch von den Organisten relativ wenig gespielt und ist beim breiten Publikum kaum bekannt.

Biographische Hinweise Matthias Weckmannn wurde 1616 in Thüringen geboren. Mit zwölf Jahren schickte ihn sein Vater, ein evangelischer Pastor, zum Musikstudium nach Dresden, wo Heinrich Schütz seine Ausbildung beaufsichtigte und ihn 1633 zur Fortbildung zu Jacob Praetorius II., einem der berühmtesten Schüler von Sweelinck, nach Hamburg schickte. Ein Jahrhundert später berichtet

Johann Mattheson, dass Matthias Weckmannn, nachdem er auf die Empfehlung von Schütz mit Jacob Praetorius gearbeitet hatte, ”die prätorianische Ernsthafftigkeit mit einer scheidemannischen Lieblichkeit zu mässigen ; und also viele galante Erfindungen einzuführen“ verstand. (Grundlage einer Ehren-Pforte, Hamburg, 1740).

Weckmannn kehrte 1636 nach Dresden zurück, wurde zum Organisten der kurfürstlichen Schlosskirche ernannt und in die kurprinzliche Kapelle aufgenommen.

Danach hielt er sich als Hoforganist in Dänemark auf, bevor er 1647 nach Dresden zurückberufen wurde. Im Jahre 1648 heiratete er in Lübeck Regina Beute. Sein Trauzeuge war Franz Tunder.

1650 wurde er nach Dresden eingeladen, um sich dort mit dem hochberühmten Cembalisten des Kaisers Johann Jacob Froberger zu messen, der nach dem Konzert erklärte, Weckmannn sei ein echter Virtuose. Das war der Beginn einer langjährigen

1655 erhielt Weckmannn nach einem öffentlichen Vorspiel den Organistenposten an der Jacobikirche in Hamburg. Davon berichtet sein Schüler Johannes Kortkamp ausführlich: „Wie nun die Reihe an ihm zu spielen, fantasirte er im vollen Werk den Thon, auß welchem die auffgegebene Fuga war, so primus tonus solte sein, war aber mit tertie toni vermischet und war wunderbahr zu tractiren. Hernach tractirt er das geistliche Kirchen-lied, so ihm auffgegeben: An wasserflüssen Babilon auff 2 Clavir. In dem Oberwerck nam er die Registrierung des seel Jacob Schultzen, so er gewohnt zu St. Petri […]. Erstlich anfangs den Choral gantz schlecht und einfaltig. Hernach hat er ihn fugenweisse tractirt und durch alle transposition geführet. Auch mußte er eine Motete des seel. H. H. Praetorio auss den Bass tractiren, 6 vocum und nachgehens auff 2 Clavir variiren. Hiernegst musste er mit H. Schopen ein Violin-Solo machen, umb zu vernehmen, wie er in den General-Bass berühmt wehre. Zu letzt und zum Beschluß in vollen Werk eine lustige Fuge”.

Kortkamp erinnert sich auch an seine Arbeit als Assistent, die er in den darauffolgenden Jahren ausübte: „Und (ich) bin bey ihm 6 Jahr gewesen, seine Orgel unterhalten, das er wegen Stimmung derselben nicht müde wehre, sondern einen kräfftigen Geist hette zu spielen, wovon ich grossen Nutzen hatte, wenn er spielte und hinter ihm stant, die Stimmen anzog, so er verlangte; auch, wenn ich wissen wolte, wie der Jacobus Schultze gespielet, tractirt er den Choral, in der Vesper das Magnificat, am Sontag einen Psalm, so ich mit Lust anhörte und Freuden-Trähnen vergoss, nachgehens mir seine Gedanken

Die Musiksprache Jacob Praetorius’ Stylus gravis (ein kunstvoller Kontrapunkt) ist ein häufig auftretendes Merkmal von Weckmannns Stil. Der kontrapunktische Satz ist in den ersten und letzten Versen des großen Zyklus Es ist das Heil uns kommen her und O Lux beata Trinitas besonders komplex.

Eine andere Übereinstimmung mit Praetorius besteht in der Einhaltung der Klangfarbe

und Einfälle explizierte; hierdurch machte er mich klug.“ 1660 wurde Weckmannn Hamburger Bürger und gründete kurz danach das Collegium Musicum, ein Ensemble von fünfzig Musikern, das jede Woche probte und die besten italienischen und deutschen Kompositionen spielte.

Als 1662 die Pest in Hamburg ausbrach, starben viele seiner Freunde und Kollegen. Die Komposition des Magnificat für Orgel stammt wahrscheinlich aus dieser schmerzlichen Zeit. Seine Frau starb 1665 und ließ ihn mit acht Kindern allein zurück. Zwei Jahre später heiratete er Catharina Roland, die ihm mehrere Kinder gebar.

Matthias Weckmannn starb am 24. Februar 1674. Sein bester Freund, Christoph Bernhard, leitete den Trauergottesdienst. Danach dankte er den Musikern des Collegium Musicum und sagte: “Sie seint bisshero glücklich gewesen ; es wird aber künfftig mit Ihnen eine große Verenderung kommen, die Music wieder fallen, wie Sie in 14 Jahren an diesem Ohrte gestiegen”.

jedes Modus (oder „Tons“): In den Chorälen wie in den freien Werken legt Weckmannn großen Wert auf den gewählten Modus, er prägt sich seine besondere Klangfarbe ein, um den Charakter der Komposition zu bestimmen, verzichtet aber nicht darauf, ihm durch verschiedene Alterationen sowie die Verwendung von Chromatik und Modulationen weitere Farbtöne zu verleihen Doch das grundlegendste Erbe von Praetorius besteht darin, „daß er gravitätisch und sehr andächtig spielte und die Hertzen zu Anhörung der Predigt sehr animiren konnte.“ ( J. Kortkamp).

Scheidemanns Einfluss findet in verschiedenen Formen Ausdruck, besonders aber im verzierten Stil (Stylus luxurians), der die zweiten Verse der Choralzyklen für zwei Manuale und Pedal kennzeichnet. Dem Vorbild Sweelincks folgend, hatte Scheidemann den Gebrauch von Echoeffekten zwischen den beiden Manualen beträchtlich erweitert.

Der zweite Vers von Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ (I) beweist, wie sehr Weckmannn diese Technik des Frohlockens beherrscht. Hier kann auch eine gewisse Verwandtschaft zwischen Weckmannns Magnificat und Scheidemanns Magnificat-Bearbeitungen in den acht Tönen erwähnt werden.

Von welchen „galanten Erfindungen“ spricht Mattheson? Auf rhythmischer Ebene legt Weckmannn einen erstaunlichen Einfallsreichtum an den Tag, der sicher mit seiner Erfahrung auf dem Gebiet der Vokal- und Instrumentalkompositionen in Zusammenhang steht. Die beiden Verse von Gott sei gelobet und gebenedeiet bieten eine bemerkenswerte Vielfalt dieser rhythmischen Figuren. So ist im ersten Vers die Einbeziehung eines Fragments im 6/4-Rhythmus in einem hauptsächlich binären

Kontext zu finden, was bei Weckmannn häufig vorkommt.

Einige Handschriften zeugen von einer anderen Neuheit: dem Solo-Einsatz der Trompete 16’ (in seiner Orgel der Jacobikirche von Hamburg im Oberwerk) in der linken Hand, wie etwa im dritten Vers von Es ist das Heil uns kommen her und in O Lux beata Trinitas.

Die Kompositionsweise mit Doppelpedal hatte unter anderen bereits Samuel Scheidt angewandt. Weckmannn entwickelt dies, wobei er manchmal die Tenorstimme (Cantus firmus), die von der linken Hand gespielt wird, im rechten Fuß verstärkt (erster Vers des Magnificats und der zwei großen Choralzyklen). Das 5-stimmige Praeambulum folgt Scheidemanns Kompositionsweise, doch ist es virtuoser und sein Aufbau (Präludium, binäre Fuge, ternäre Fuge, Coda) zeigt die Entwicklung an, die zu den großen Praeludia Buxtehudes führen sollte.

Schütz hatte Weckmannn die Kenntnis der alten und modernen italienischen Vokalmusik weitergegeben, während ihm Froberger das Erbe Frescobaldis übermittelte, das in den Toccaten für Cembalo und den sowohl auf der Orgel als auch auf dem Cembalo spielbaren Canzone deutlich erkennbar ist.

Zahlreiche Orgelstücke sind im Geist der Musica Poetica geschrieben, gemäß den rhetorischen Prinzipien, nach denen sich die deutschen Komponisten im 17. Jh. richteten. Die Choralzyklen weisen reichlich musikalische Figuren auf, die dazu beitragen, den Hörer zu überraschen, die Spannung zu steigern und den Sinn der Worte hervorzuheben. Die ersten beiden Verse über Komm, heiliger Geist, Herre Gott sind

dafür wunderbare Beispiele.

Erwähnenswert ist auch der Einsatz der Chromatik, die oft an den Ausdruck des Schmerzes gebunden ist. Im dritten Vers von Nun freut euch, liebe Christen gmein ist die chromatische Behandlung höchst eigenartig, ohnegleichen in der norddeutschen Musik.

Noch eindrucksvoller ist der Einsatz der Dissonanz: Dafür bieten das Magnificat und die letzten beiden Verse von O Lux beata Trinitas erstaunliche Beispiele.

Diese Neuheiten und „Erfindungen“ sind immer mit der Absicht expressiv zu sein verbunden, sei es auf der Orgel oder in den Kantaten. Zu diesem Thema erzählt Johann Mattheson eine köstliche Anekdote: „Der berühmt gewesene Organist zu St. Jacob in Hamburg, Matthias Weckmannn, hat einst die Worte aus dem 63 Cap. Esaiä so nachdrücklich, dem loco adjunctorum gemäss, componiret und aufgeführet, dass der bekannte Juden-Bekehrer Licentiat Edzardi ihm das Zeugnis gegeben: Er habe im SingBasse den Messiam so deutlich abgemahlet, alswenn er ihn mit Augen gesehen hätte”. ( J. Mattheson, Der vollkommene Capellmeister, Hamburg, 1739).

Zwei Zyklen von außergewöhnlichem Ausmaß Die beiden großen Zyklen über Es ist das Heil uns kommen her und O Lux beata trinitas lassen Charakteristika und Vorzüge erkennen, die in der gesamten Orgelmusik des 17. Jh. nicht ihresgleichen haben. Diese Zyklen, die je etwa eine halbe Stunde dauern, gehören zu den längsten Orgelwerken der Barockzeit. Sie sind nicht für den liturgischen

Gebrauch bestimmt, haben jedoch eine starke philosophische und theologische Dimension.

In seiner Studie über das Werk Weckmannns machte Hans Davidsson die rhetorischen, symbolischen und numerologischen Dimensionen von Es ist das Heil deutlich.

Außerdem wies er nach, dass zwischen den Theorien von Athanasius Kircher und der Komposition über O Lux Beata Trinitas ein äußerst interessanter Zusammenhang besteht. In seiner 1650 in Rom erschienenen Abhandlung Musurgia Universalis entwickelte der Jesuit, Wissenschaftler, Musiktheoretiker und Enzyklopädist Kircher seine Idee der kosmischen Orgel und schrieb: „ ... nichts ist auch diser sichtbarn Welt ehnlicher / als ein Orgel”.… „die Orgeln sind ein Wunder-Kunststück … wer wil leugnen / dass nicht diese Kunst bei uns zur höchsten Vollkommenheit kommen sei”.

Kircher vergleicht die sechs Tage der Schöpfung mit den sechs Registern einer kosmischen Orgel, die vom Schöpfer selbst gespielt wird. Die in diesem Zyklus sehr präsente Zahlensymbolik verbindet Weckmannns Komposition endgültig mit der mittelalterlichen Vorstellung der Musik als Spiegel der Vollkommenheit der Schöpfung, der die Prinzipien der Sphärenharmonie reflektiert. Dieser Zusammenhang mit den Theorien Kirchers verleiht Weckmannns Werk eine ganz außergewöhnliche Dimension.

Der darin erreichte Grad an polyphoner Vielschichtigkeit kann mit den letzten Werken J.S. Bachs, wie etwa mit der Kunst der Fuge, verglichen werden, und außerdem erreichte kein anderer Orgelkomponist eine so starke Verschmelzung zwischen Musik und kosmischer Philosophie.

Es ist das Heil uns kommen her Der Choraltext (Paul Speratus, 1523) besteht aus 14 Strophen und hat einen Brief des heiligen Paulus zur Vorlage. Er behandelt ein zentrales Thema des christlichen Denkens, nämlich das durch den Glauben gefundene Heil. Anscheinend hat Weckmannn hier den Beschluss gefasst, den Choral nicht strophenweise zu behandeln, sondern in seiner gesamten theologischen Dimension, laut der uns Gott das Heil gewährt, indem er uns Christus sendet. Sein Opfer gibt den Menschen die Hoffnung wieder. Die Werke genügen nicht; nur nach dem Glauben werden die Menschen von Gott beurteilt.

Weckmannn komponiert sieben Verse: die Zahl 7 ist ein Symbol der Gnade. Der Zyklus kombiniert den Stylus gravis (Verse 1,2 und 7) und den Stylus luxurians (die übrigen Verse).

Die Kanons sind auf die Gefahr hin, für den modernen Zuhörer etwas streng zu klingen, sehr präsent: Der Kanon ist traditionsgemäß in der evangelischen Musik die musikalische Darstellung des Gesetzes.

Der erste Vers ist fünfstimmig und wird „im vollen Werck“ gespielt. Der Cantus firmus dagegen mit dem Pedal. Der dreistimmige zweite Vers ist ein strenger zweistimmiger Kanon unter dem Cantus firmus, der sich im Sopran befindet.

Der dritte Vers ist in einem verzierten Stil für zwei Manuale und Pedal geschrieben. Er setzt die Trompete 16’ in der linken Hand ein, was den Eindruck von Tiefe hervorruft.

Der Rhythmus ist besonders vielfältig, wobei in Takt 48 ein hochschnellendes, möglicherweise zur Schilderung der Erlösung dienendes Motiv auftaucht, da die Erlösung im zweiten Teil des Textes der 7. Strophe erwähnt wird: “Wer gleubt an dich

und wird getaufft / demselben ist der Himml erkaufft / dass er nicht wärt veloren.”

Der vierte Vers ist dreistimmig, wobei zwei Stimmen im Oktavabstand einen Kanon singen, während der Bass für den Cantus firmus zuständig ist. Viele synkopierte Motive rufen eine Stimmung hervor, die der in der 9. Strophe erwähnten Sünde gut entsprechen. Im zweiten Teil taucht ein Motiv in Form einer Figura suspirans auf mit einer ausdrucksstarken Modulation auf die Worte „Es [das Evangelium] spricht nun kreuch zum Kreuz herzu“, worauf eine weit schnellere und lockere Episode in Tanzform folgt.

Der fünfte Vers ist ebenfalls dreistimmig, doch hier umgibt der Kanon im Duodezimabstand den Cantus firmus des Tenors, eine Position, die wahrscheinlich Christus’ Vermittlerrolle symbolisiert.

Der sechste Vers ist bei weitem der reichste und erstaunlichste des gesamten Zyklus. Er bildet allein eine fünfstimmige (gegen Ende zu sechsstimmige) „Choralfantasie“, die etwa 10 Minuten dauert. Der von Davidsson vorgeschlagene Text der 13. Strophe scheint der musikalischen Kompositionsweise maximalen Sinn zu verleihen, und zwar sowohl in ihrer Dimension des jubelnden Lobgesanges als in vielen musikalischen Details (zum Beispiel: die figurierte Nennung des Vaters, des Sohns und des Heiligen Geists): „Sey lob und Ehr mit hohem Preis umb dieser Gutthat willen / Gott, Vater, Sohn und heiligem Geist / der woll mit Gnad erfüllen / was er in uns angfangen hat / zu ehren seiner Mayestat / das heiligt werd sein Nahme.”

Der siebente und letzte Vers ist ein grandioses Postludium für sechs Stimmen, von

denen zwei mit dem Pedal gespielt werden. Er entspricht wahrscheinlich dem Sinn der vierzehnten und letzten Strophe, die aus einer Paraphrase des Vaterunsers besteht.

O Lux beata trinitas Die dem heiligen Ambrosius zugeschriebene Hymne besteht aus drei Strophen, die der Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit gewidmet sind. Die erste Strophe setzt Gott mit dem Licht gleich: „Der du bist drei in Einigkeit, / Ein wahrer Gott von Ewigkeit; / Die Sonn‘ mit dem Tag von uns weicht: / Lass leuchten uns dein göttlich Licht.“ Der Komponist lässt sich hier vom Gegensatz Licht – Dunkel inspirieren, der dem christlichen Denken zugrunde liegt.

Weckmannn verwendet vor allem die Zahlen 3 (Symbol der Dreifaltigkeit), 4 (Feuer, Engel, die 4 Elemente usw.) und 6 (die Anzahl der Schöpfungstage). Der Zyklus enthält 6 Verse, doch wenn man berücksichtigt, dass der vierte aus 4 Variationen besteht, ist die Gesamtsumme 9 (3x3).

Der erste Vers ist ein grandioses fünfstimmiges Präludium auf dem Plenum. In seinem Kommentar des ersten Schöpfungstages beschreibt Athanasius Kircher die Schöpfung des Lichts sowie die 9 Chöre der Engel und der Seligen. Die Großmixtur kann als die klangliche Allegorie dieser 9 Chöre interpretiert werden.

Der zweite Vers ist eine vierstimmige Fuge von großer Schlichtheit. Der Cantus firmus ist der Oberstimme anvertraut, was möglicherweise auf das Feuer hindeutet, das über der Schöpfung leuchtet. Kirchers Kommentar berichtet von der Schöpfung der 4

Elemente: Wasser, Erde, Luft und Feuer.

Für den dritten Vers wählt Weckmann den Stylus luxurians mit vielen, abwechslungsreichen Figuren. Ein Solo ist der linken Hand anvertraut (die Lüneburger Tabulatur gibt die Trompete 16’ an, doch wir wählten in dieser Aufnahme einen Dulcian 16’), der Cantus firmus wird vom Tenor mir dem Pedal gespielt. Der Text Kirchers verdient es, zur Gänze zitiert zu werden: „Kaum ertönte das dritte Register des dritten Tages, gebar die Erde wie eine Orgel, auf dem ein Organist geschickt spielt, eine Vielzahl an Kräutern, Pflanzen, Blumen und Früchten, die sich von selbst entwickelten. Doch was hätte dies anderes sein können als diese Vielfalt der Modulationen, Kadenzen und Fugen der göttlichen Orgelkunst, die zwar in ihrer Natur sehr unterschiedlich und untereinander dissonant, aber alle herrlich sind, und vom allwissenden Organisten verziert und untereinander vermischt wurden, so dass eine wunderbare Harmonie daraus entstand.“ Der vierte Vers ist der längste. Er ist in Form von 4 Variationen geschrieben, unter denen die ersten beiden die Form eines „Biciniums“ (in der Art Sweelincks) haben und die beiden folgenden dreistimmig sind, wobei zwei Stimmen im Oktavabstand einen Kanon bilden. Der Cantus firmus ist allgegenwärtig, und seine langen Notenwerte stehen im Kontrast zur Regheit und zum Fluss des Kontrapunkts. Hinter der scheinbaren Strenge des Satzes nimmt man ein Kreisen wahr, das einem gewissermaßen den Eindruck eines Schwindelgefühls vermittelt. Kircher kommentiert seinerseits den vierten Tag als den der Erschaffung der Himmelskörper: Sonne, Mond, Planeten, Sterne. Er beschreibt das

von Sternen und unzähligen leuchteten Punkten verzierte Firmament: „Was bedeutet das anderes als die harmonischen Melodien, die unter den großen Konsonanzen und Dissonanzen der Zeit, d.h. dem Licht des Tages und dem Dunkel der Nacht, verborgen und vorhanden sind.“ Hans Davidsson schlägt vor, die erste Variation als die Grundeinheit zu interpretieren, d.h. die Einheit Gottes mit sich selbst, die zweite als die der Engel, die in gleichbleibenden Kreisen rund um den Cantus firmus (der Gott symbolisiert) tanzen; für die dritte legt er die Einheit des Makrokosmos nahe (die durch einen wunderbar um den Cantus firmus verzierten Tanz symbolisiert wird), und für die letzte den Mikrokosmos, also die Menschheit.

Welche symbolischen Vorstellungen sich Weckmannn auch immer erdacht haben mag, wir sind hier mit einer Kompositionsweise konfrontiert, die umso ausgefeilter ist, als sie auf den ersten Blick extrem einfach scheinen könnte.

Der fünfte Vers ist für zwei Manuale und Pedal geschrieben. Am fünften Tag tritt auf der Erde Leben auf. Kircher spricht von den „Gesetzen der Ein- und Unstimmigkeiten, der Liebe und des Hasses, von denen eine Harmonie und eine Symphonie ausgehen, die wunderbarerweise aus der Konsonanz und Dissonanz“ zwischen den Lebewesen abgeleitet werden. Die Musik scheint sich von der vorangegangenen himmlischen Harmonie zu entfernen, um eine melancholischere, unruhigere Dimension anzunehmen, in der Dissonanzen und Konsonanzen, Spannungen und Entspannungen abwechseln oder sich sogar überlagern. Daviddson schlägt vor, das Werk ab Takt 57 als

Der sechste und letzte Vers ist ein grandioses fünfstimmiges Postludium auf dem Plenum. Es enthält absteigende melodische Motive, die vom Cantus firmus mitgerissen werden. Dieser wird im tiefen Bereich des Pedals gespielt. Dieser Vers ist keineswegs triumphierend: Er quillt über vor Synkopen, Vorhalten, Dissonanzen, übersteigerten chromatischen Bewegungen und löst sich schließlich in einem grandiosen G-DurAkkord auf. Soll man darin eine – tragische – Vision der Menschheit sehen? Oder eine Darstellung der Kräfte des Bösen? Jedenfalls ist man hier weit von Kirchers fröhlicher Beschreibung der Erschaffung des Menschen und der grandiosen Harmonie entfernt, die von der kosmischen Orgel hervorgebracht wird ...

Diese Musik bleibt rätselhaft. Sicher hat sie noch nicht alle ihre Geheimnisse preisgegeben. Was verstanden Weckmannns Zeitgenossen davon? Davon fehlt uns jede Spur. Es bleibt uns nichts anderes übrig als zu betrachten, zu meditieren, zu hinterfragen, was uns von diesem Werk Jahrhunderte später erreicht.

sie in späterer Zeit von Arp Schnitger umgebaut wurde. Wolfgang Zerer spielte dort eine bemerkenswerte Gesamtaufnahme der Orgelwerke Weckmannns ein.

Für die Aufnahme der großen Werke wählte ich ein anderes großes Hamburger Instrument, nämlich das der Katharinenkirche, wo Heinrich Scheidemann mehrere Jahrzehnte hindurch Organist war, und Weckmannn ihn sicher spielen hörte. Diese Orgel machte in den folgenden Jahrhunderten große Veränderungen durch, doch gab ihr die Firma Flentrop nach einer Restaurierung/Rekonstruktion ihren vollen Glanz zurück, nachdem alle historischen Elemente (vor allem mehrere hundert Pfeifen, die von vielen alten Registern stammten) sorgfältig untersucht worden waren, bevor sie restauriert wurden und bei der Rekonstruktion des Instruments als Maßstab dienten.

Außerdem sind hier noch zwei weitere historische Instrument zu hören: das der Cosmaekirche von Stade (das von Berendt Huss entworfen und von seinem Schüler Arp Schnitger vollendet wurde) und das von Arp Schnitger in der Kirche von Hollern gebaute Instrument, das vor kurzem Hendrik Ahrend restaurierte.

So erklingt Weckmannns Werk auf drei verschiedenen Orgeln, von der kleinen Orgel von Hollern, der eine sehr klare Akustik zugute kommt, bis zur monumentalen Orgel der Katharinenkirche.
