La véritable intrigue se déroulait sur le blanc de la page Jean-Paul Celea est un musicien trop sincère pour s’encombrer d’un masque, mais il a sincèrement deux visages et celui qu’il vous présente n’est pas toujours celui auquel vous pensiez vous adresser. Non parce qu’il aurait un goût immodéré de la mystification et du contrepied (spécialité en laquelle, toutefois, il est passé maître ; comme malgré lui, serait-on tenté de dire : en fait, par fidélité à sa nature profonde, disposée aux métamorphoses). La bonne réponse est : parce que ses visées sont en général moins convenues que vos perspectives. Moins linéaires, en tout cas. Et surtout, moins univoques. Il y a, par exemple, un Celea de la violence et un Celea du raffinement, qui ne cessent de dialoguer entre eux, voire de se prendre l’un pour l’autre. Cette essentielle ambiguïté offre à son art la faculté, si précieuse, de se réinventer en permanence. Et aussi, un beau matin, de visiter en explorateur l’univers d’Ornette Coleman, où tant d’autres ne firent qu’une escale touristique, comme si, plus de cinquante ans après « Something Else !!!! », il s’agissait encore d’une terre vierge. Comme s’il restait à dévoiler une musique qui se promène toute nue depuis si longtemps, dans un espace où la marge et le milieu de la route ne se distinguent pas volontiers. À la fin des années 50, des hommes comme Miles Davis, George Russell, Sonny Rollins ou John Coltrane cherchaient à apercevoir ce qui se dessinait au-delà de Charlie Parker. D’autres regardaient au contraire par-dessus son épaule, curieux de ce qui s’était passé en deçà, du côté des origines. Ainsi Charles Mingus, à grands coups de machette, au plus épais de la brousse, se frayait-il un chemin vers les braises auxquelles l’Oiseau avait volé la flamme : le péché originel, voilà ce qu’il voulait découvrir, en espérant que ce serait une chose hurlante et scandaleuse. Ornette, lui, à travers les hautes exigences du parkérisme et ses géniaux stratagèmes, était en quête d’une innocence, non pas perdue, mais refoulée et, du coup, interdite aux musiciens dont elle demeurait pourtant, à son avis, l’ultime justification et le seul pur idéal ; tomorrow, pour lui, n’était pas du tout la question : la question, c’était le premier jour du monde, l’aube de la création, l’état de nature. L’un figurait le pithécanthrope mal léché, l’autre incarnait le bon sauvage. Le free jazz naissant s’arrangea comme il put de cette double et contradictoire paternité. En attendant que la politique vînt encore embrouiller l’énoncé du problème…

Avec des résultats sans aucun doute mémorables, Celea aurait pu tirer son entreprise du côté où beaucoup, j’en suis sûr, l’attendaient : celui du primitivisme, voire d’un infantilisme, sinon revendiqué, du moins délibérément apprivoisé, puis cultivé avec persévérance et assumé dans la sérénité par l’altiste. Étant Jean-Paul Celea, il a choisi tout le contraire. L’adhésion que proclame son « Yes Ornette ! » se révèle d’abord un hommage — au sens propre inouï — à ce qui dans le petit monde colemanien fait mentir le commentaire officiel, vide les clichés de leur substance, oblige les images à dire le contraire des légendes, si bien nommées, qui les accompagnent. Le portrait tracé du dédicataire, au fil d’une série de miniatures à la fois très denses et très aérées, est celui d’un créateur que l’on connaît mal, pressés que nous sommes de plutôt reconnaître en lui le convaincant reflet de son icône. Avec beaucoup de tact, et cependant avec une détermination sans faille, nous sommes mis en présence d’un Ornette subtil, fragile, recherché, aux incertitudes exactes, aussi nostalgique que visionnaire (souvent au même instant), plein d’élégance, n’en déplaise à ses contempteurs, et, n’en déplaise à ses dévots, plein de calcul. Se profile la silhouette inattendue, peut-être inespérée, d’un poète architecte, qui ne méprise pas les travaux d’horlogerie et manipule au besoin les outils de l’orfèvre. On relit entre les lignes le roman cent fois fréquenté : on s’aperçoit soudain que le plus beau de l’histoire s’écrivait là. La véritable intrigue se déroulait sur le blanc de la page. Jean-Paul et ses partenaires nous entraînent au cœur le plus déroutant du mystère. De l’énigme, ils ne nous donnent pas la clé : ils nous forcent à la regarder en face, impénétrable comme toute beauté se doit de l’être quand on a fini de parler d’elle.

Il fallait pour cela des musiciens intègres. Qui fussent aussi des musiciens téméraires. Et ambitieux. On le sait depuis longtemps, Wolfgang Reisinger n’est pas seulement percussionniste : c’est un arrangeur spontané, qui dresse et échange les décors, y attribuant à chaque événement sa juste place, son juste éclairage, sa juste résonance.

Quant à Émile Parisien, jeune homme en pleine ascension, il réalise cet exploit de dire la vérité d’Ornette sans lui voler ses mots — preuve éclatante qu’en art la maturité n’a pas d’âge. Enfin, si passionné, si fécond, équilibrant sans cesse lucidité et fièvre, le contrebassiste apparaît sous les traits qui, je crois, le définissent le mieux : toujours curieux de soi, jamais complaisant envers lui-même.

The real plot was unfolding on the blank page Jean-Paul Celea is too sincere a musician to burden himself with a mask but he really has two faces, and the one he shows you is not always the one you thought you were addressing. Not because he is excessively fond of mystification and exact opposites (a speciality of which he is nonetheless a past master; as if in spite of himself, one might be tempted to say: In fact, out of fidelity to his profound nature, which is inclined to metamorphoses). The right answer is: Because his aims are, in general, less conventional than your perspectives. Less linear, in any case. And above all, less univocal. There is, for example, a Celea of violence and a Celea of refinement, who carry on a continual dialogue between them, or take one for the other. This essential ambiguity gives his art the highly valuable faculty of constantly reinventing itself.

And also, one fine morning, to visit, as an explorer, the universe of Ornette Coleman, where so many others make only a tourist stop, as if, more than fifty years after “Something Else!!!!”, this were still virgin land. As if there remained a music to unveil that has been strolling around stark naked for so long, in a space where the fringe and the middle of the road are not readily told apart.

In the late 1950s, men like Miles Davis, George Russell, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane were seeking to perceive what was taking shape beyond Charlie Parker. Others, on the contrary, were looking over his shoulder, curious about what had happened on this side, on the side of the origins. Thus, Charles Mingus, with great machete blows in the thickest bush, hacked a path towards the embers from which the Bird had stolen the flame: the original sin - that’s what he wanted to discover, hoping that this would be a screaming, scandalous thing. Ornette, through the high standards of Parkerism and his brilliant stratagems, in search of an innocence not lost but repressed and, as a result, forbidden to musicians although remaining, in his opinion, the ultimate justification and sole pure ideal. For him, tomorrow was not at all the question: the question was the first day of the world, the dawn of creation, the state of Nature. One depicted the uncouth pithecanthropus, the other embodied the noble savage. As best it could, nascent free jazz reached an arrangement with this dual, contradictory paternity. Whilst waiting for politics to come and further confuse the wording of the problem…

With doubtlessly memorable results, Celea might have drawn his enterprise towards the side where, I’m sure, many expected him: that of primitivism, or even an infantilism that, if not proclaimed, was at least deliberately tamed then cultivated with perseverance by the artist and accepted in serenity. Being Jean-Paul Celea, he chose just the opposite. The adherence proclaimed by his “Yes Ornette!” turns out first to be a tribute - in the unheard-of literal sense - to what in this little Colemanian world gives lie to the official commentary, empties clichés of their substance, and obliges images to say the contrary of the captions that accompany them. The portrait drawn of the dedicatee, in the course of a series of miniatures both very dense and very airy, is that of a creator who is ill-known, pressed as we are to instead recognize in him the convincing reflection of his icon. With considerable tact, and yet with unwavering determination, we are put in the presence of a subtle, fragile, sought-after Ornette, with exact uncertainties, as nostalgic as they are visionary (often simultaneously), full of elegance and, regardless of what his denigrators or devotees might think, calculating. Thus the unexpected, perhaps unhoped-for, silhouette of an architect-poet takes shape, who does not despise clockwork and, when need be, handles silversmith’s tools. One again reads between the lines the novel visited a hundred times: one suddenly notices that the finest part of the story was being written there. The real plot was unfolding on the blank page. Jean-Paul and his partners drag us to the most disconcerting heart of the mystery. They do not give us the key to the enigma: they force us to look it straight in the face, impenetrable as all beauty must be when one has finished talking about it.

For that, upright musicians were necessary. Musicians who were also bold. And ambitious. It has long been known that Wolfgang Reisinger is not only a percussionist: he is a spontaneous arranger who sets up and exchanges décors, giving each event its rightful place, its rightful lighting and resonance. As for Émile Parisien, a young man on the rise, he achieves the exploit of telling the truth about Ornette without stealing his words — dazzling proof that, in art, maturity is ageless. Finally, so impassioned, so fruitful, constantly balancing lucidity and fever, the bass player appears with the features that, I believe, define him best: always curious about himself, never complacent with himself.
