DE MAÎTRE À ÉLÈVE : CHIARA BANCHINI ET AMANDINE BEYER Quelles sont vos trois qualités ? Vos trois défauts ?

AB : L’empathie, l’énergie et l’imagination. La première me permet d’aller vers les autres. La seconde est mon moteur, la lumière et le chemin de ce que je veux faire. Pour les défauts, la liste est longue et je laisse les personnes qui me connaissent en faire le catalogue. Mais je peux au moins en nommer un: la désorganisation (que j’essaie toujours d’ériger en qualité, sans succès).

CB : J’aime la vie et je me sens en paix avec moi-même. J’ai atteint l’âge de la retraite et du repos sans angoisse et sans regrets pour ce que je n’ai pas pu faire.

Ensuite, j’ai la chance d’avoir beaucoup d’énergie et de santé, dans le travail de chef d’ensemble, de professeur. Je n’ai jamais manqué une journée d’enseignement. Pour les défauts, j’en ai un grave: je déteste le froid et la pluie me rend triste.

Un disque ressemble-t-il plutôt à une photo que vous avez envie de retoucher ou à un portrait pour lequel vous éprouvez de l’affection ? Que ressentez-vous à l’écoute de vos propres disques ?

CB : Je dois avouer que je n’arrive pas à écouter mes vieux enregistrements. Heureusement, j’ai un frère qui les collectionne précieusement. Récemment, il a redécouvert mon premier enregistrement de sonates italiennes du XVIIème siècle. Je l’ai donc écouté. Je l’ai trouvé tout à fait écoutable mais surtout porté par un grand enthousiasme musical.

AB : Moi non plus je n’écoute presque jamais les disques dans lesquels je joue.

En revanche je regarde très souvent les vidéos que nous avons faites pendant les enregistrements (pour ces moments de réunion, de travail, d’enthousiasme, d’adrénaline, de joie et de détresse). Je pense au disque Matteis ou à notre dernier Vivaldi “Nuova Stagione”. Car en plus du son, il y a l’image, les gestes, le souvenir de lieux superbes. J’imagine qu’avec le temps ces souvenirs prennent de plus en plus de valeur. Pour cela, je suis contente de prendre de l’âge.

Exercice délicat d’introspection : qu’est ce que la professeure retrouve d’ellemême dans le jeu de son élève ?

CB : Le professeur ne devrait pas chercher à se retrouver elle-même dans l’exécution de son élève mais plutôt à le rendre capable d’acquérir une totale indépendance : se réaliser avec sa propre personnalité, sa propre musicalité au travers de la transmission d’un savoir théorique et technique.

Dans votre pédagogie du violon baroque, peut-on parler de tradition (transmission, réception, dépassement) ?

CB : J’entends transmettre le savoir, la connaissance des traités ainsi que les codes d’interprétation liés à l’époque des compositeurs. Par transmission, j’entends également l’apprentissage d’une technique de main gauche et d’archet qui permette à l’élève de dépasser l’apprentissage théorique et de libérer son interprétation. Par réception, j’entends la capacité de l’élève et du professeur à trouver un langage commun qui leur permette de se comprendre et de se respecter mutuellement. C’est essentiel. Par dépassement, j’entends la capacité du profes-

seur à éprouver un plaisir intense à l’écoute d’une élève comme Amandine qui joue tellement bien.

Qu’est-ce que l’élève retrouve de son maître dans son propre jeu ?

AB : Dans la classe de Chiara, à la Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, les cours d’instrument sont individuels. Ils encouragent une pédagogie différenciée qui offre la possibilité de créer un espace commun de stimulation, de liberté et d’amour pour la musique. Je voudrais seulement ajouter que j’aime me sentir parcourue par les conseils et les influences de mes anciens professeurs. Pour leur charisme, leur exigence et leur musicalité mais surtout pour leur son, je voudrais citer quatre noms qui continue de m’accompagner : Aurelia Spadaro, Jean Ter Merguerian, Barbara Krakauer et Chiara Banchini. C’est un trésor inouï. Leur lumière réapparait régulièrement dans mes cours. Il y a des musiciens qui sont autodidactes. Ce n’est absolument pas mon cas. J’aime apprendre en compagnie de quelqu’un. La transmission permet la réflexion. Et entre les deux, le lien de confiance est fondamental.

Les années pionnières de la redécouverte du répertoire baroque laissent aujourd’hui la place à une forme de reconnaissance unanime. Entre les années d’étude de Chiara Banchini (années 70) et celles d’Amandine Beyer (fin des années 90), la musique baroque a changé de visage. Ce souffle merveilleux de liberté face à un territoire inconnu s’est-il amenuisé ? Est-il encore plus ample aujourd’hui ?

CB : Dans les années 70, la redécouverte d’œuvres et de traités inconnus s’accompagnait d’une pratique nouvelle de l’art de l’improvisation, de la diminution et de l’ornementation. Ce nouveau paysage musical faisait souffler le vent béné-

fique de la contestation et favorisait la remise en question de l’enseignement dispensé au conservatoire.

Je pense qu’il est bien plus difficile pour la génération des années 90 de garder l’enthousiasme de la découverte. Désormais tout est enregistré ou édité en facsimilé. Il est plus facile de copier et de coller que de continuer une recherche expressive personnelle. Tout enseignement, aussi contestataire qu’il soit, court le danger de devenir académique. Je dois donc envisager que cette même attitude critique à l’égard de mes professeurs du conservatoire, j’en sois aujourd’hui l’objet de la part de la nouvelle génération.

AB : J’espère que Chiara n’a pas entièrement raison. Il y a encore des choses à découvrir. Nous sommes beaucoup de jeunes musiciens à garder cette curiosité et cet élan musical. A lire soi-même les traités et à déchiffrer les œuvres, l’interprétation reste toujours subjective à chaque moment de l’histoire. Car la musique est un art du temps, instantané. C’est pour cela qu’elle doit être jouée. Les partitions et les enregistrements ne suffisent pas.

Constituer un ensemble permet de développer une signature sonore et de s’épanouir individuellement dans une complicité artistique en évolution. 25 ans séparent la création de l’ensemble 415 (1981) et Gli Incogniti (2006). Quelle est la nature du travail et de la recherche que vous avez voulu engager au sein de vos ensembles respectifs ?

CB : A la création de l’Ensemble 415, nous étions le premier petit orchestre baroque en Suisse. En France, c’est autre chose. Il y avait déjà de nouveaux ensembles mais l’idée de fonder un orchestre de cordes entièrement dédié au répertoire ita-

lien de chambre était assez nouvelle. Aujourd’hui, il s’en crée tous les jours des nouveaux. Assez vite, mon idée a été de jouer avec mes élèves et mes anciens élèves. Cela me permettait de trouver une langue commune. Ce que je leur enseignais, je le retrouvais dans l’ensemble : émission du son, articulation. La cohésion sonore qui caractérisait l’Ensemble 415 vient de là.

AB : Gli Incogniti est un ensemble sensiblement différent. Il s’agit davantage d’une réunion entre amis et d’une ambiance très démocratique. L’entente musicale est aussi importante que l’amitié. Nous sommes en revanche plus à cheval entre la musique de chambre et l’orchestre. Depuis le début, nous jouons un répertoire européen en essayant d’alterner auteurs très connus et d’autres qui le sont moins.

Je crois beaucoup au métissage et à la rencontre de musiciens venant d’horizons très variés.

La virtuosité diabolique et l’extravagance digitale entretenue par les grandes figures du violon baroque (Veracini, Uccellini, Tartini, Locatelli, Vivaldi) trouvent aujourd’hui un écho particulier avec la vitesse effrénée de notre monde contemporain : le violon baroque, est-ce avant tout l’éloge de la lenteur ou de la vitesse ? La phobie du vide ou la boulimie du plein ? Ou nécessairement les deux ?

CB : Il faut bien différencier d’un côté les grands virtuoses des grands compositeurs.

Au XVIIème et au XVIIIème siècles, le culte du virtuose-maître-soliste est arrivé à son apogée mais il y a eu peu de violonistes virtuoses qui étaient également de grands compositeurs.

Aujourd’hui, courir pour éblouir peut faire oublier la profondeur, le calme et la sincérité d’une interprétation. Je reste éternellement admirative des premières inter-

prétations sur instruments d’époque de Gustav Leonhardt. Vous y trouverez un grand calme, une magnifique lenteur que nous n’osons plus pratiquer.

AB : Je dois être une fille de mon temps mais j’aime la vitesse ! J’aime courir, presser, non pour éblouir mais pour ressentir les effets grisants de la virtuosité. Au fond, même en jouant vite vous pouvez éprouver un certain calme. Je suis persuadé que la question du tempo représente un des thèmes les plus intéressants de l’histoire de la musique. Il y a tellement de paramètres en jeu : le rythme harmonique et la structure d’une œuvre, sa fonction sociale, le contexte de sa composition mais également les destinataires, l’histoire de ses exécutions. C’est un très vaste sujet et nous devrions rester flexibles (dans nos têtes et dans nos doigts).

Quels sont aujourd’hui les enjeux de la musique instrumentale baroque et notamment des répertoires que vous jouez ?

CB : Si je commençais aujourd’hui mes études de violon, j’essaierais d’aller audelà du répertoire baroque qui reste aujourd’hui revisité dans tous ses aspects.

Je jouerais les répertoires classiques et romantiques selon les critères d’interprétation de ces époques. Je trouve que les “baroqueux” s’y mettent sans vraiment étudier les nombreux traités qui sont portant très clairs et qui décrivent les changements techniques, une nouvelle tenue du violon et de l’archet, des doigtés, des glissades. Ce répertoire est encore trop méconnu. Je suis souvent triste de devoir constater que Beethoven ou Schubert ne sont pas pris au sérieux par les « baroqueux ». C’est dommage. Mais il faut avouer que c’est plus difficile que de courir.

AB : Je souscris entièrement à cela. Ce domaine représente pour moi une transition encore un peu floue. C’est quelque chose d’un peu complexe, car beaucoup d’entre nous ont travaillé ces répertoires avec le violon moderne. Il n’est pas simple de remettre en question des choses intégrées depuis si longtemps comme la tenue, le rubato ou les glissades. C’est un peu comme si des amis se revoyaient après s’être perdues de vue pendant de longues années : chacun a traversé de nombreuses aventures et vous envisagez de converser avec eux d’une manière un peu différente. Dans cette perspective, un projet auquel j’ai participé m’a énormément inspiré. C’est le programme Mozart par l’ensemble 415. Je me souviens de deux moments très importants : le concerto en La majeur dans lequel nous avons accompagné Giuliano Carmignola. Absolument époustouflant ! Et une interprétation inoubliable de Chiara dans l’adagio de la Cassation en Sol Majeur K.63.

Je jouais dans l’orchestre et en l’espace d’un instant j’ai compris de précieuses choses que Chiara nous avait pourtant maintes fois expliquées.

On entend comment vous jouez mais on ne sait pas comment vous entendez ?

Dans vos activités respectives de concertiste, de direction, de chambriste, d’enseignement, à quoi êtes-vous sensible dans le jeu d’un violoniste ?

AB : Au-delà de l’écoute, je regarde. Je suis toujours très sensible à l’entité que le violoniste forme avec son instrument. La pratique du violon finit toujours par créer de nombreuses tensions. J’éprouve beaucoup de plaisir quand je vois des violonistes capables de déjouer ce piège car la plupart du temps ils arrivent à établir une communication sereine avec leur instrument. Au-delà du violon, j’aime que le musicien me parle, attire mon attention, me laisse entrevoir son humanité mais là on rentre dans un domaine très subjectif.

CB : Amandine est une musicienne qui communique magnifiquement avec son instrument et qui parle à son public d’une façon naturelle assez extraordinaire.

Elle a aussi des dons exceptionnels qu’elle a su développer et maitriser dans son jeu. Je n’ai pas les mêmes dons qu’Amandine. J’ai du énormément travailler pour arriver à un niveau technique acceptable. Je ne suis pas une soliste et je me sens mieux dans la musique de chambre, dans la direction, le partage et l’enseignement.

Parmi tous les compositeurs italiens que vous jouez, à quoi mesurez-vous la subjectivité d’un compositeur ? De qui vous sentez-vous le plus proche ?

AB : Question difficile ! Si je pense à ceux que j’ai le plus joués (Corelli, Vivaldi, Veracini et Locatelli), il s’agit avant tout des éléments de liberté et d’expression.

Corelli m’apporte de l’espace. Sa musique est tellement subtile qu’il faut en permanence ajuster ses propres paramètres. C’est un exercice de style très stimulant dans lequel on se sent en équilibre sur un fil. D’autres comme Locatelli sont nettement moins organisés. L’interprète peut se sentir à la fois plus libre mais également un peu perdu. Ce qui est fascinant avec Locatelli, c’est tout le travail sur le son et sur l’intimité avec la corde, comme si la musique sortait de manière aléatoire de la matière même de la vibration. Chez Veracini, je ne peux jamais éviter de penser qu’il devait être un peu fou! J’adore imaginer ce brin de fantaisie toujours à la limite de la rupture afin de rentrer dans son jeu d’humour, de bizarrerie et de surprises. Pour Vivaldi, il faut prendre la peine de rentrer dans chaque ligne pour observer des choses de toute beauté, des intervalles surprenants, des couleurs inédites, des instrumentations originales neuves.

CB : Difficile d’en dire plus qu’Amandine. Si je joue tant de répertoire italien c’est

avant tout parce que j’ai l’impression de m’approcher de ma langue maternelle.

Par ailleurs, j’ai un amour sans limite pour Mozart et Bach. J’ai eu la chance de découvrir et jouer Corelli avec Jesper Christensen qui m’a ouvert au monde de l’ornementation, du rubato et de la basse continue. De Boccherini, j’aime la douceur et la poésie typiquement italiennes. Je dis toujours que si j’avais rencontré Boccherini, j’en serais tombée amoureuse. Avec Tartini et les sonates pour violon sans basse, j’ai essayé de travailler l’expressivité de la langue poétique et l’ornementation en me passionnant pour Le Tasse et Metastase. Je me sens moins proche de compositeurs virtuoses comme Vivaldi ou Locatelli même si je prends un plaisir immense à faire sonner leurs extravagances et leurs excès. Je les écoute volontiers s’ils sont bien joués mais ni trop vite, ni trop fort, ni trop raide.

C’est hélas une pratique courante aujourd’hui.

Par la perfection apollinienne de son écriture (moins de 10 heures de musique en tout), l’archange Corelli est au centre de la constellation des plus grands compositeurs pour le violon. On peut lui opposer la figure plus inflammable du vénitien Antonio Vivaldi. A la lumière de ses contemporains et après 40 ans de discographie fournie, qu’est-ce qui aujourd’hui justifie encore un tel engouement pour le « pretre rosso »?

AB : Concernant Corelli, le public d’aujourd’hui a peut être du mal à imaginer qu’un compositeur italien de l’époque baroque a pu écrire des oeuvres classiques qui ne soient pas uniquement feu, passion, extravagance, vitesse et contraste. Corelli est moins en vogue que Vivaldi à cause de ce quiproquo terminologique mais aussi parce qu’il n’a pas écrit les Quatre Saisons, l’oeuvre qui a ouvert les portes

de la gloire à Vivaldi au XXème siècle (heureusement, il y a le “Concerto Fatto per la Notte di Natale” mais on l’entend plus rarement dans les ascenseurs). Je pense que Corelli souffre un peu de cette étiquette de compositeur parfait un peu compassé car beaucoup n’ont pas l’oreille encore assez éduquée pour passer la barrière de la forme. Je rêve de jouer un concerto grosso avec un public peu nombreux qui serait mélangé aux musiciens, au coeur même de cette écriture, afin de percevoir le raffinement extrême de cette musique. La musique de Corelli est plus personnelle et plus intime. Celle de Vivaldi, de par son énergie et sa générosité sans bornes, est à partager avec le monde.

Quand vous vous emparez du violon, qu’est-ce qu’il ne faudrait jamais perdre de vue avant de le faire sonner ?

AB : J’essaie de savoir pourquoi et pour qui je joue. J’ai parfois peur que tout cela soit vain et inutile. Et puis je reprends courage. Il suffit de voir ce que l’écoute de ce patrimoine commun peut provoquer comme réactions.

CB : J’ai un violon qui a plus de 300 ans. Quand je le sors de sa boite, je le regarde avec admiration, puis je l’écoute. Chaque jour, il est très différent : parfois magnifique, enroué, triste. Il m’arrive de n’avoir aucune envie de jouer. J’essaye alors de me sentir bien avec lui. Quand je travaille des gammes, j’aime ces moments de solitude partagée. Ces moments intimes sont parmi les plus importants.

FROM TEACHER TO PUPIL: CHIARA BANCHINI AND AMANDINE BEYER What are your three strengths? Your three weaknesses?

AB: Empathy, energy, and imagination. The first enables me to relate to other people. The second is my driving force, the light and the path towards what I want to do. As to my weaknesses, the list is a long one and I’ll let the people who know me compile it. However, I can name at least one: disorganisation (which I always try to claim is a strength, but without success).

CB: I love life and I feel at peace with myself. I have reached retirement age, the time for rest and repose, without anxiety or regrets over what I wasn’t able to achieve. Secondly, I have the good fortune to have plenty of energy and to enjoy good health in my work as director of an ensemble and teacher. I have never missed a day’s teaching. When we come to weaknesses, I have one serious failing: I hate the cold and rain makes me sad.

Does a disc resemble a photo that you’d like to retouch or a portrait that you’re fond of? What do you feel when you listen to your own recordings?

CB: I must confess that I can’t bring myself to listen to my old recordings. Fortunately, I have a brother who collects and treasures them. He recently rediscovered my first recording of seventeenth-century Italian sonatas. So I listened to it. I found it quite listenable but above all borne along by great musical enthusiasm.

AB: I hardly ever listen to the recordings I’ve played on either. On the other hand, I very often watch the videos we made during the sessions (for those moments of togetherness, of work, of enthusiasm, of adrenaline, of joy and distress). I’m thinking of the Matteis CD or our most recent Vivaldi, ‘Nuova Stagione’.

Because there, as well as the sound, you have the picture, the movements, the memory of wonderful places. I imagine that with time these mementoes will become more and more valuable. That’s one reason I’m happy to get older.

Here’s a delicate exercise in introspection: what does the teacher recognise of herself in the playing of her pupil?

CB: The teacher shouldn’t try to see herself in the playing of her pupil but rather give the pupil the means to acquire total independence and fulfil herself with her own personality, her own musicality, by passing on theoretical and technical knowledge and skills.

In your method of teaching the Baroque violin, is it possible to talk about a tradition (transmission, reception, surpassing of self)?

CB: My aim is to transmit knowledge, familiarity with the treatises and the codes of interpretation relating to the composer’s period. By transmission, I also mean passing on a left-hand and bowing technique that allows the pupil to go beyond theoretical learning and liberate his or her performance. By reception, I mean the ability of pupil and teacher to find a common language that enables them to understand and respect each other. That is essential. By surpassing of self, I mean the teacher’s capacity for feeling intense pleasure on listening to a pupil like

Amandine, who plays so well.

What does the pupil recognise of her teacher in her own playing?

AB: In Chiara’s class at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the instrumental lessons are individual. They encourage a differentiated style of tuition that offers the possibility of creating a shared space of stimulation, freedom, and love of music. I would add that I like to feel the advice and influence of my former teachers still living in me. For their charisma, their high standards and their musicality, but above all for their sound, I’d like to mention four names that continue to accompany me: Aurelia Spadaro, Jean Ter Merguerian, Barbara Krakauer, and Chiara Banchini. They represent an extraordinary treasuryeof experience for me. The light of their inspiration reappears regularly in my own classes. There are musicians who are self-taught. That is absolutely not the case with me. I like to learn in someone else’s company. Transmission makes for reflection. And between teacher and pupil, the bond of confidence is fundamental.

The pioneering years of the rediscovery of the Baroque repertory have today made way for a form of unanimous recognition of its importance. Between the student years of Chiara Banchini (the 1970s) and Amandine Beyer (the late 1990s), the face of Baroque music changed radically. Has that marvellous sense of freedom at exploring an unknown territory diminished? Or is it more present than ever nowadays?

CB: In the 1970s, the rediscovery of unknown works and treatises was accompanied by a new practice of the arts of improvisation, diminution, and ornamentation.

Over this new musical landscape there blew a beneficial wind of contestation which led many people to call into question the teaching dispensed in conservatories.

I think it’s much harder for the generation of the 1990s to maintain the enthusiasm of discovery. Now everything has been recorded or published in facsimile. It’s easier to copy and paste than to carry on the search for an expressive personal style. All teaching, however anti-establishment it may have been at one time, runs the risk of becoming academic. So I have to expect that the same critical attitude I once showed to my teachers at the conservatory should now be applied to me by the new generation.

AB: I hope Chiara isn’t completely right. There are still things to discover. There are many of us young musicians who still have that curiosity and that musical ardour. When you read the treatises and play through the works for yourself, you realise that their interpretation is always subjective at each moment in history. Because music is an art of time, an art of the instant. That’s why it has to be played.

Printed scores and recordings aren’t enough.

Building one’s own ensemble makes it possible to develop a signature sound and find individual fulfilment within a constantly evolving artistic complicity. Twentyfive years elapsed between the formation of Ensemble 415 (1981) and that of Gli Incogniti (2006). What is the nature of the work and research you wished to carry out in your respective ensembles?

CB: When Ensemble 415 was founded, we were the first small-scale Baroque orchestra in Switzerland. In France, things were different. There were already new ensembles, but the idea of founding a string orchestra wholly dedicated to the

Italian chamber repertory was fairly novel. These days, new ensembles of that kind are being formed every day. I quite soon hit on the idea of playing with my pupils and former pupils. That enabled me to find a common language. I recaptured in the ensemble what I had already taught them earlier: sound production, articulation. That was the origin of the cohesive sound that was characteristic of Ensemble 415.

AB: Gli Incogniti is a markedly different kind of ensemble. It’s more a gathering of friends in a very democratic ambience. Mutual musical understanding is as important to us as friendship. Also, we’re more on the borderline between chamber music and the orchestra. Ever since we began, we’ve played a repertory from all over Europe, trying to alternate between very well-known composers and others who are less familiar. I’m a firm believer in the virtues of cross-fertilisation and the meeting of musicians from very varied horizons.

The diabolic virtuosity and the digital extravagance practised by the great figures of the Baroque violin (Veracini, Uccellini, Tartini, Locatelli, Vivaldi) find a particular echo today with the breakneck speed of our contemporary world: is the Baroque violin primarily the praise of slowness or of swiftness? The phobia of emptiness or the bulimia of fullness? Or necessarily both at once?

CB: We have to be careful here to distinguish the great virtuosos from the great composers. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the cult of the virtuoso, the maestro , the soloist reached its peak, but there were very few virtuoso violinists who were also great composers.

Today, rushing in order to create a dazzling effect can distract attention from the

profundity, the calm and the sincerity of an interpretation. I feel eternal admiration the first performances on period instruments of Gustav Leonhardt. There you find an immense calm, a magnificent slowness that we no longer dare practise.

AB: I must be a child of my time, but I like speed! I like to hurry, to rush, not to dazzle the audience but to feel the intoxicating effects of the virtuosity. In the end, even when you play fast you can still experience a certain calm. I’m convinced that the question of tempo represents one of the most interesting themes in the history of music. There are so many parameters involved: the harmonic rhythm and the structure of a work, its social function, the context of its composition but also the people it was intended for, its performance history. It’s a very vast subject and we ought to remain flexible about it (in our heads and in our fingers).

What are the issues at stake in Baroque instrumental music today, and notably in the repertories you play?

CB: If I were beginning my violin studies today, I would try to go beyond the Baroque repertory, which nowadays has been revisited in all its aspects. I would play the Classical and Romantic repertories according to the performance criteria of those periods. I think the ‘Baroque specialists’ approach this later music without proper study of the many treatises, even though the latter are very clear in the way they describe the technical changes, a new way of holding of the violin and the bow, fingerings, slides. This repertory is still too little understood. I am often sad to see that these ‘Baroque specialists’ don’t take Beethoven or Schubert seriously. It’s a great pity. But it must to be admitted that it ‘s more difficult to do so than to rush through music.

AB: I entirely agree with that. It’s a domain that represents for me a transition that is still rather vague. What makes it a bit complicated is the fact that many of us have worked on these repertories with the modern violin. It’s not easy to call into question elements we absorbed so long ago, such as tenuto, rubato, and slides.

It’s rather like friends who meet again after losing touch for many years: each of them has been through numerous adventures, and you have to think about speaking to them in a slightly different way. From this point of view, a project I took part in some time ago was an enormous inspiration to me. It was Ensemble 415’s Mozart programme. I remember two very important moments. One was the Violin Concerto in A major, in which we accompanied Giuliano Carmignola. Absolutely amazing! And an unforgettable performance by Chiara in the Adagio of the Cassation in G major K63. I was playing in the orchestra and in a flash I understood a host of precious things, even though Chiara had already explained them to us many times.

We hear the way you play, but we don’t know how the way you hear! In your respective activities as concert soloist, director of an ensemble, chamber musician, and teacher, what are the things you perceive in a violinist’s playing?

AB: Over and above merely listening, I watch. I’m always very alert to the entity the violinist forms with his or her instrument. Violin playing ends up creating numerous physical tensions. I’m very pleased when I see violinists capable of avoiding that pitfall by managing most of the time to establish serene communication with their instrument. Aside from the violin itself, I like the musician to speak to me, to capture my attention, let me glimpse his or her humanity – but there we’re getting onto very subjective ground.

CB: Amandine is a musician who communicates magnificently with her instrument and speaks to her audience with a naturalness that’s pretty extraordinary. She also possesses exceptional gifts which she has succeeded in developing and controlling in her playing. I don’t have the same gifts as Amandine. I have to practise an enormous amount to reach an acceptable technical level. I’m not a soloist and I feel more comfortable in chamber music, directing an ensemble, sharing and teaching.

Among all the Italian composers you perform, how do you measure the subjectivity of a composer? Which ones do you feel closest to?

AB: That’s a tricky question! If I think of those I’ve played most (Corelli, Vivaldi, Veracini, and Locatelli), the key elements are those of freedom and expression.

Corelli brings me space. His music is so subtle that you constantly have to adjust your own parameters. It’s a very stimulating exercise of style in which you feel you’re balancing on a tightrope. Other composers, like Locatelli, are considerably less organised. The interpreter can feel freer but at the same time also a bit disorientated. What’s fascinating with Locatelli is all the work on the sound and on the intimate relationship with the string, as if the music were emerging in aleatory fashion from the very matter of the vibration. In Veracini, I can never avoid the thought that he must have been a bit crazy! I adore thinking up a bit of whimsy, always near the edge, in order to enter into his mixture of humour, quirkiness, and surprise. In the case of Vivaldi, you must take the trouble to look at each line; if you do, you’ll observe things of astonishing beauty, surprising intervals, innovative colourings, new and original scoring.

CB: It’s difficult to add anything to what Amandine has said. If I play so much Ital-

ian repertory it’s above all because I have the impression I’m approaching my mother tongue. But I also have a boundless love for Mozart and Bach. I was lucky enough to discover and play Corelli with Jesper Christensen, who opened my eyes to the world of ornamentation, rubato, and basso continuo. And I love the gentleness and the typically Italian poetry of Boccherini. I always say that if I had met Boccherini I would have fallen in love with him. With Tartini and his sonatas for violin without bass, I tried to work on the expressivity of poetic language and ornamentation and became fascinated by Tasso and Metastasio. I feel less close to virtuoso composers like Vivaldi or Locatelli, even if I take immense pleasure in bringing out their extravagances and their excesses. I enjoy listening to them if they are played well but neither too fast, nor too loud, nor too stiffly. Unfortunately all those faults are commonly found today.

Thanks to the apollonian perfection of his style, the ‘Archangel’ Corelli is at the centre of the constellation of the greatest composers for the violin – even though he wrote less than ten hours of music in all. He can be set against the more incendiary figure of the Venetian Antonio Vivaldi. In comparison with his contemporaries, and after forty years of plethoric recording activity, what is it that still justifies such a craze for the Prete Rosso today?

AB: As far as Corelli is concerned, perhaps today’s public finds it hard to imagine that an Italian composer of the Baroque era could have written classical works that do not consist only of fire, passion, extravagance, speed, and contrasts.

Corelli is less fashionable than Vivaldi because of this terminological misunderstanding, but also because he didn’t write The Four Seasons , the work that ensured Vivaldi’s fame in the twentieth century (fortunately, there is the Concerto fatto

per la Notte di Natale or ‘Christmas Concerto’, but that is heard much more rarely in lifts). I think Corelli suffers a little from being labelled as a ‘perfect’, slightly stuffy composer, because many people’s ears are still not sufficiently educated to get past the barrier of the form. I dream of playing a concerto grosso with a small audience that would be dispersed among the musicians, at the very heart of the texture, so that they could perceive the extreme refinement of this music. The music of Corelli is more personal and more intimate. Vivaldi’s music, with its energy and its unbounded generosity, is for sharing with the whole world.

When you pick up your violin, what would you say you must never lose sight of before producing a sound from it?

AB: I try to know why and for whom I’m playing. I’m sometimes afraid that the whole thing is pointless and futile. And then I take heart again. You need only see the kind of reactions you get when people listen to this shared heritage.

CB: I have a violin that’s more than three hundred years old. When I get it out of its case, I look at it with admiration, then I listen to it. Each day, it’s very different: sometimes magnificent, sometimes hoarse or sad. Some days I don’t want to play at all. Then I try to feel at ease with it. When I practise my scales, I enjoy those moments of solitude that we share. Those intimate moments are among the most important to me.
