La richesse d’écriture de cette Sonate méritait bien de construire autour de ce chef-d’œuvre un programme de disque, fait de pièces originales, de transcriptions ou d’œuvres reconstituées.

Créée le 23 novembre 1781 à Vienne, cette Sonate kv 448 (375a) a été écrite durant les premières années viennoises de Mozart (1781-1784). C’est à cette époque que Mozart, galvanisé par ses succès munichois, s’installe dans la capitale autrichienne au service de l’archevêque Colloredo. Malgré les efforts de son père Leopold pour calmer son génie de fils, les choses ne se passent pas bien entre le maître et son serviteur. Mozart ne supporte plus d’être considéré comme l’égal du personnel de maison. Il ne supporte pas non plus de ne pouvoir donner de concerts à l’extérieur de sa cour d’attache, ce qui lui aurait permis de gagner plus d’argent. C’est aussi l’époque où les relations avec Constanze Weber, sa femme, deviennent difficiles (il n’en parle d’ailleurs presque plus dans les lettres qu’il envoie à son père pour raconter son installation à Vienne). Logé dans un modeste appartement, il a cependant la liberté de donner des leçons dans les riches familles de Vienne. Parmi ses trois ou quatre élèves régulières figure Josepha von Auernhammer à qui il dédie sa Sonate pour deux pianos, ainsi que plusieurs sonates avec accompagnement de violon (éditées chez Artaria). Il ne faut pas s’imaginer une idylle entre le professeur et l’élève : Mozart trouvait Josepha fort repoussante et il était très vexé de savoir qu’une rumeur courait en ville sur une

possible liaison. Pour couper court à tout cela, Mozart s’empresser d’écrire des phrases très dures au sujet de son élève, comme dans la lettre du 22 août 1781 où il raconte que Josepha est « grosse comme une fille de ferme » et qu’elle « transpire à vous faire vomir ». Quelques semaines auparavant, il avait concédé : « La demoiselle est un monstre d’horreur, mais elle joue à ravir. Il ne lui manque que le goût vraiment fin, chantant dans le cantabile » (27 juin 1781). En fait, Mozart était très certainement attendri par cette jeune femme qui, parfaitement consciente de sa laideur, voulait secrètement devenir musicienne professionnelle, pour échapper à l’avenir tout tracé que lui destinait sa mère.

Cette Sonate reflète leur complicité musicale. On y entend aussi des échos de L’En-

lèvement au sérail que Mozart n’arrivait plus à composer fin 1781, se sentant presque en panne d’inspiration... Ce qui était rarissime chez lui. La Sonate sonne donc comme un espace de liberté, loin des contraintes et des commandes à assumer. Le premier mouvement Allegro con spirito sonne comme une ouverture d’opéra. La virtuosité y est saisissante et redoutable, tant elle doit être complètement maitrisée pour ne pas gommer l’effet jubilatoire. Des effets d’écho inventifs donnent une dimension orchestrale au propos. Le second thème, simple et sobre, apporte un contraste total ; il combine le cantabile au canon, puisque les deux pianos s’amusent rapidement à un contrepoint sérieux, en pleine effusion sensible. Dans les épisodes conclusifs (codas), l’écriture pianistique devient encore plus nettement « orchestrale » : on croit entendre des traits rapides de violoncelles qui se distinguent de la virtuosité aigue des violons des mains droites. On entend aussi de fantastiques effets de crescendo d’orchestre qui témoignent d’une maitrise parfaite de cette écriture pianistique proche d’une symphonie.

Dans ce premier mouvement, le développement est saisissant : étonnamment court, il s’ouvre sur un motif en la majeur qui ressemble à un motif de fugue, chromatique,

contourné et descendant, et qui est un dérivé lointain du second thème. On en attendrait plus... Mais Mozart préfère nous laisser en attente et développer par la suite un peu sa réexposition – un principe que n’oubliera pas Beethoven. L’Andante est d’une grande tendresse ; les relais entre les deux claviers rayonnent de sensualité. On y entend un exemple typique de ce stile cantabile que recherchait Mozart – disant ne pas le trouver assez chez son élève... Comment ne pas admirer les magnifiques chassés-croisés entre les deux mains droites, donnant l’illusion d’écouter un duo chanté accompagné par un orchestre. Le finale (Allegro molto) est à nouveau d’une redoutable virtuosité. Il s’agit d’un rondo-sonate qui précipite chaque épisode vers la conclusion ultime, avec l’impatience de la « folle journée » des Noces.

On sait que Mozart a été sincèrement excité par les possibilités nouvelles d’écriture que pouvaient proposer l’usage de deux claviers – sentant qu’il pouvait donner plus d’ampleur au style, plus d’agilité aux échos - par rapport à l’étroitesse d’un clavier unique. Étrangement, les sonates qu’il envisagera de composer dans la foulée de la

KV 448 resteront inachevées (il s’agit des KV 375b et 375c). Personne n’a pu avancer de motif convaincant pour expliquer que la Sonate KV 448 soit restée seule de son espèce. Cela ne fait qu’en souligner aujourd’hui l’intérêt.

La transcription d’œuvres de musique de chambre est un autre prétexte pour utiliser les deux pianos comme des claviers « orchestraux ». C’est ce qu’a fait Johann Gottfried Pratsch en arrangeant le Quatuor pour piano, violon, alto et violoncelle kv 493 de Mozart (Vienne, 1786) pour deux claviers. Pratsch lui laisse le titre de « Quatuor » en couverture, alors qu’il l’intitule « Sonate » en page intérieure... Il est indiqué pour « clavecins », mais il est évident qu’il peut être joué au pianoforte. Cet arrangement porte le numéro d’opus 4 ; il a été édité à Saint-Pétersbourg (sans date précise). Johann Gottfried Pratsch (de son vrai nom Jan Bogumir Prač) est un musicien d’origine

tchèque né vers 1750, qui s’est établi à la fin des années 1770 à Saint-Pétersbourg pour enseigner la musique dans différents établissements de la ville. Il y meurt en 1818.

Il est connu pour être l’auteur, avec Nikolaï Lvov, d’un recueil de chansons populaires russes pour voix et pianoforte, paru en 1790. Ces mélodies traditionnelles seront ensuite utilisées par différents compositeurs russes (Glinka, Rimski-Korsakov, Moussorgski, etc.) ; Beethoven s’en servira lui aussi dans son Quatuor « Razumovski » op.

59 n° 2. Pratsch est aussi l’auteur de nombreuses pièces pour piano, dont Douze variations (1802), une Sonate en ut majeur op. 1, un Rondo en fa majeur, un beau Fandango op. 2, et de la musique de chambre, dont une Sonate pour violoncelle et pianoforte en la mineur op. 6.

Son arrangement du Quatuor KV 493 de Mozart est dédié à deux aristocrates russes : Sophie de Soymonoff et Sophie de Davidoff. Le clavier 1 reprend la plupart du temps la partie originale de piano, alors que le clavier 2 synthétise les parties de cordes.

Mais cette répartition est loin d’être systématique, ce qui rend d’ailleurs cet arrangement intéressant. Pratsch reconsidère en effet les échanges thématiques entre les instruments, pour répartir l’intérêt mélodique entre les deux claviers. Il lui arrive aussi de compléter l’écriture mozartienne : c’est donc bien un arrangement et non une transcription dont il s’agit. Cette réécriture légère a pour but d’adapter au clavier certaines tournures ; Pratsch ajoute aussi, ça et là, des traits de virtuosité destinés à remplir l’espace acoustique des deux claviers. Les trois mouvements initiaux sont conservés : Allegro, Larghetto et Rondo Allegretto. Cette œuvre avait déjà été enregistrée par Alexei Lubimov et Yury Martynov en 2002 pour le label Christophorus (édition en 2005). Il s’agit là d’un nouvel enregistrement, dix ans après.

L’Adagio et Fugue KV 546 est lui aussi une œuvre à l’histoire intéressante. En décembre 1783, alors qu’il découvre avec fascination l’univers de Bach chez le baron Van Swieten

qui lui montre les partitions originales du grand maître du contrepoint savant, Mozart commence par composer sa Fugue en ut mineur pour deux pianos (KV 426). À Vienne en juin 1788, il décide de la réécrire pour quatuor à cordes, en ajoutant un Ada-

gio introductif (KV 546). Au XXe siècle, c’est le musicologue allemand Franz Beyer qui a choisi de transcrire pour deux pianos l’Adagio initial, comme un juste retour des choses ! Le langage de ce diptyque est incroyable : les enchaînements harmoniques sont imprévisibles (comme dans ses plus grandes fantaisies), le contraste rythmique (le rythme pointé s’oppose aux liaisons suspendues jouées presque sans pulsation), la tension véhémente et chromatique du contrepoint... tous ces éléments font que cette œuvre réussit le tour de force de s’appuyer sur des modèles anciens (que l’époque galante aimait peu), tout en se projetant vers un langage romantique de par son ambition (la Grande Fugue op. 133 de Beethoven n’est pas loin...).

Le dernier cas – encore différent – est celui du Larghetto et Allegro pour deux pianos en mi bémol majeur. On ne sait pas si Mozart n’a pas fini la composition de ce diptyque ou si la fin en a été perdue : reste aujourd’hui le Larghetto complet, et seulement le début de l’Allegro (jusqu’à la fin de l’exposition). En 1992, le pianiste et musicologue Robert Levin a réussi à reconstituer la fin du mouvement rapide, avec un talent d’écriture qui fait honneur à l’original. Là encore, il est très probable que Mozart avait joué cette œuvre avec l’une de ses élèves, comme ce fut le cas pour le Concerto pour deux pianos KV 365 qui lui ressemble beaucoup (les deux sont en mi bémol majeur). Certains pensent d’ailleurs que cette partition, même longue, a pu être donnée en bis. Le Larghetto fait partie de ces mouvements magiques, sombres et lumineux à la fois, dans lesquels les ornements s’intègrent subtilement, sans jamais perturber les lignes de force ; le dialogue entre les deux claviers est un modèle d’équilibre. L’Allegro contraste fortement. La lumière remplit désormais tout l’espace acoustique, avec un jeu de relais

ludique et virtuose. Le développement reprend, en les exploitant différemment harmoniquement, les d’éléments de l’exposition. Là encore, c’est le triomphe du piano orchestral, qui joue sur les contrastes de registre, de couleurs, de masses, de nuances...

THE MOZARTIAN MOSAIC FOR TWO PIANOS This CD prolongs, in some way, the extraordinary experience which the Sonata KV

448 for two pianos represents: a work composed by Mozart necessitating two keyboards when usually he wrote for 4 hands at one piano; duets were in fact the form preferred by music editors - for obvious commercial reasons. This Sonata contains such rich writing that it was well worth designating it the key work of this CD - and also having it complemented by other original two-piano compositions and transcriptions.

Created on 23 November 1781, Sonata KV 448 (375a) was written during Mozart’s early years in Vienna (1781-1784). It was during this period that Mozart, galvanised by his success in Munich, settled into the service of Archbishop Colloredo in the Austrian capital. In spite of Leopold Mozart’s efforts to steady his son’s genius, relationships between master and servant became strained. Mozart could no longer stand being accorded the same social level as the household servants. Neither did he accept not being able to give concerts beyond the walls of the Archbishop’s Court – thereby being prevented from earning extra income. This is also the time when relationships with his wife, Constanze Weber, became difficult (he practically omits to mention her in his letters to his father when he describes his settling into Viennese life). Although housed in modest apartments, he was free to give music lessons to rich Viennese families and amongst his three or four pupils were Josepha von Auernhammer to whom he dedicated the Sonata for two pianos, as well as several sonatas for violin and piano (edited by Artaria). It would be impossible to imagine the relationship between teacher and pupil as being idyllic as Mozart found Josepha quite repulsive and was very displeased to learn that local rumour talked

of a possible affair between him and his pupil. In order to curtail such suggestions Mozart went to great pains to describe Josepha in a derogatory way in his letters.

In a letter dated 22 August 1781, for instance, he describes her as being “as fat as a farm wench” and that “she perspires so much that she makes me feel sick”. A few weeks beforehand, however, he had conceded: “The young Miss is a monstrous horror but she fills one with marvel when she plays. All that she lacks is a very fine singing style in the cantabile passages” (27 June 1781). In reality, Mozart was very certainly touched by this young woman who, perfectly conscious of her poor looks, secretly wanted to become a professional musician in order to escape from the life which her mother had mapped out for her.

This Sonata reflects the musical complicity between Mozart and his pupil. In it we also hear echoes of his Abduction from the Seraglio which Mozart was having difficulty in finishing at the end of 1781, through a seeming failure of inspiration….A very rare occurrence for Mozart. The Sonata rings out then like a moment of freedom, far from the constraints and music commissions he had to face.

The First Movement Allegro con spirito resounds like an overture to an opera. Its virtuosity is astonishing and redoubtable in that it needs to be completely mastered in order not to efface its jubilatory character. To this effect, inventive echoing passages create an orchestral dimension.

The second theme, simple and sober, is in total contrast; it combines the cantabile with the canon as the two pianos rapidly and playfully engage in serious counterpoint - in the midst of full, sensitive effusion. In the concluding episodes (codas), the pianistic writing becomes even more clearly “orchestral”: we imagine hearing rapid down-strokes in the cellos distinguishing themselves from the heightened vir-

tuosity of the violins in the right hands. We also hear fantastic orchestral crescendo effects which demonstrate in no uncertain way a perfect mastery of this almost symphonic piano-writing.

In this first movement, the development section is astounding: surprisingly short, it opens with a motif in A major which resembles that of a fugue – chromatic, twisting and descending – which is a distant derivation of the second theme. We would like to hear more….but Mozart prefers to keep us waiting and instead develops his exposition a little further – a technique which Beethoven would adopt for himself later.

The Andante is one of great tenderness; the interplay between the two keyboards shining with sensuality. We hear a typical example of the stile cantabile which Mozart was seeking –saying that he didn’t find it sufficiently present in his pupil’s playing…..How could we not admire the magnificent, complicit interchange between the two right hands, giving one the impression of listening to a vocal duet accompanied by an orchestra.

The finale (Allegro molto) is once more of fearsome virtuosity; A rondo-sonata which drives each episode towards the ultimate conclusion with the impatience of the “frenzied day” of the Marriage of Figaro.

We know that Mozart was genuinely excited by the possibility of writing further for two pianos – feeling that he could bring greater amplitude to the style, greater agility to the sonorous interplay - in comparison to the restrictions imposed by works for one piano alone. Surprisingly, the sonatas which he had planned to immediately compose following the KV 448 were to remain unfinished (Sonatas KV 375b and

375c). No one has found a sufficiently plausible reason to explain why the Sonata KV 448 remained his only example of the genre and this can only underline the interest the work enjoys today.

Transcriptions of pieces of chamber music were another pretext for making use of two pianos in an “orchestral” way. This, in fact, is what Johann Gottfried Pratsch did in arranging the Quartet for piano, violin, viola and ‘cello KV 493 by Mozart (Vienna, 1786) for two pianos. Pratsch entitles the work “Quartet” on the cover, whereas on the inside page he uses the word “Sonata”…. It indicates that the piece is destined for two harpsichords, but it is obvious that the work can also be played on pianos. This arrangement is his Opus 4 and was published in Saint-Petersburg (date unknown). Johann Gottfried Pratsch (his real name was Jan Bogumir Prač) was a Czech composer born around 1750 who settled in St Petersburg towards the end of the 1770’s in order to teach in different establishments in the town -dying there in 1818. He is also known as the co-author (with Nikolaï Lvov), of a collection of Russian Folk Songs for voice and piano published in 1790. These folk melodies would later be used by different Russian composers (Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Moussorgsky, etc.) Beethoven would also make use of the melodies in his “Rasoumovsky Quartet”

Opus. 59 n° 2. Pratsch was also a composer of numerous piano pieces, including Twelve Variations (1802), a Sonata in C major Op. 1, a Rondo in F major, a beautiful Fandango Op. 2, as well as Chamber Music which includes a Sonata for ‘Cello and piano in A Minor Op. 6.

His arrangement of Mozart’s Quartet KV 493 was dedicated to two Russian aristocrats: Sophie de Soymonoff and Sophie de Davidoff. Piano 1 plays mostly the original piano part whereas Piano 2 plays a reduced arrangement of the string parts.

This distribution of the roles is far from being systematic, however – which is what gives the arrangement its interest. Pratsch in fact reconsiders the thematic exchanges between the different instruments in order to redistribute the melodic interest to each of the pianos. He also, occasionally, adds elements of his own music to that of Mozart’s – making this an arrangement rather than a transcription. The aim of these slight additions was to render certain turns of phrasing better suited to the piano. Here and there, Pratsch also adds elements of virtuosity in order to fill-out musical voids between the two pianos. The three original movements are adhered to: Allegro, Larghetto and Rondo Allegretto. This work was previously recorded by Alexei Lubimov and Yuri Martinov in 2002 for the Christophorus label (released in 2005). Ten years later, this is a new recording.

The Adagio and Fugue KV 546 is also a work with an interesting history. In December 1783, Mozart discovers with fascination the universe of Bach, thanks to Baron Van Swieten who shows him original scores of the great master of counterpoint. Mozart subsequently writes his Fugue in C minor for two pianos (KV 426). In Vienna, in June 1788, he decides to re-write it for string quartet, adding an introductory Adagio (KV 546). It was the 20th Century German musicologist, Franz Beyer, who transcribed this

Adagio for two pianos, thus completing the circle by returning to base! The language of this diptych is unbelievable: the harmonic progression is unforeseeable (as is the case in his greatest Fantasies), the rhythmic contrast (the dotted rhythm is in opposition to the suspended ties, played almost without a pulsation), the vehement chromatic tension created by the counterpoint …….. All of these elements contribute to making this work a ‘tour de force’ - applied as it is, to a musical form from the ‘old’ school (which the era of ‘Sensitive Style’ disliked so much ) at the same time as projecting itself, by ambition, into the language of the Romantic Era (Beethoven’s Great Fugue op. 133 is not far away…..).

The last work – different again – is the Larghetto and Allegro for two pianos in E

flat major. It is not known if Mozart didn’t finish composing this diptych or if the ending has since been lost: all that remains today is the completed Larghetto, but only the beginning of the Allegro (as far as the end of the exposition). In 1992, the pianist and musicologist, Robert Levin succeeded in completing the fast movement in a convincing and talented way - totally in keeping with the original. Here again, it is very probable that Mozart played this work with one of his students – as was the case for the Concerto for two pianos KV 365 - which resembles very much the Larghetto and Allegro (both are in E flat major). It is also thought by some that it could have been played as an encore – although it is somewhat long. The Larghetto numbers amongst those magical movements – sombre and at the same time full of light in which the ornaments are subtly incorporated without ever disturbing the main thrust of the music; the dialogue between the two keyboards is a model of perfect balance. The Allegro is in strong contrast. Here, light fills the whole of the music with a playful relaying of virtuosity. The development takes-up the elements of the exposition, subjecting them to different harmonic treatment. Here again, the ‘orchestral’ qualities of the piano triumph with great play being made of contrasts in terms of range, colour, shape and shading…..
