1838. La décennie s’achève. Elle aura été, pour Schumann, celle du piano, confident presque unique d’une jeunesse nourrie d’une passion essentielle pour Clara Wieck, destinatrice du « grand cri » qui ouvre la Fantaisie opus 17 (1836), mais omniprésente comme inspiratrice et interprète des Kreisleriana opus 16 (1838). Ernestine von Fricken la précède - une amourette de jeunesse, qui suscite, outre le Carnaval (et la petite ville de ASCH où elle réside) les Etudes symphoniques. Lorsque le couple avec Clara sera enfin officiellement réuni (1840), Schumann-piano passera à autre chose : les Lieder, la musique de chambre, les symphonies, et d’autres grandes partitions, avec peu de piano (sauf le Concerto et quelques autres jolies pages). La décennie 183040, qu’on peut resserrer à la période entre 1833 (la Toccata opus 7) et 1838, est donc, quasi-exclusivement, celle du piano.

La Toccata opus 7 Composition en deux temps : une première version en 1830, au temps des songeries de l’apprenti pianiste, une révision en 1834, l’année des Etudes symphoniques : parti virtuose certes conservé (doubles-notes, octaves...), mais dans un geste d’enthousiasme progressif qui est du pur Schumann

NG Le souci de virtuosité transcendante – qu’il ne possédait pas au même degré qu’un Chopin ou un Liszt, semble toutefois être à l’origine de la Toccata, avec ses doubles-notes, ses extensions, ses octaves...mais Schumann accomplit là un miracle : une œuvre à part entière, non seulement éblouissante mais surtout belle, pleine d’élan, d’humour, d’une fantaisie débordante...

Chopin 1830-40 : la seule « concurrence » à même hauteur, dans ce domaine, pour Schumann, est celle de Chopin, qu’il apprécie sans grande réciprocité. Schumann lui dédiera ses Kreisleriana, Chopin, poli, sa II° Ballade. Liszt n’a pas encore vraiment commencé sa carrière de grand compositeur pour piano. Grande tentation, que celle de demander à un éminent interprète de Chopin aujourd’hui, au moment qu’il consacre un disque à Schumann, comment il arbitre entre ces deux génies.

NG. Comme nous le savons tous, l’admiration que Schumann portait à Chopin, dès les premières œuvres de celui-ci, n’était pas payée de retour ; une musique imprégnée de « littérature » était trop éloignée des idéaux de musique pure cultivés par Chopin sa vie durant. En relisant les admirables « Conseils à un jeune musicien » de Schumann, on prend pleinement conscience du fait que, pour lui, la vraie compréhension passait par une maturation sur le plan de la Culture, et un vrai dialogue avec les autres manifestations de l’art et de la pensée. Et in fine une maturation sur la plan de la morale, dont les lois sont aussi celles de l’art. En tant qu’interprète, j’ai besoin des deux univers, chopinien et schumannien : ils sont sans cesse complémentaires.

On a envie d’ajouter : l’écriture de Chopin est un miracle de pureté, d’élégance, de classicisme. Celle de Schumann, malaisée, heurtée, « gothique », devait lui être incompréhensible.

Editions Schumann/Chopin. Cela ressemble presque à une question de cours ! On n’en finirait pas de dresser des oppositions. Celle des éditions n’est pas la moins cruciale. Chopin, qui est un perfectionniste quasi-maniaque, n’en finit pas de réviser se propres œuvres. Schumann offre moins de perplexités. Le pianiste peut avoir une référence

En principe, j’utilise Henle. Mais s’agissant des Kreisleriana, j’ai également consulté l’Edition Clara Schumann. Chez Chopin, il y a des différences remarquables (mais musicalement d’égale valeur) entre les premières éditions, parues quasi simultanément dans différents pays. Seules les préférences et le goût de l’interprète pourront trancher. A part la question des « Etudes posthumes » de l’opus 13, les œuvres de Schumann posent moins de problèmes.

LES ETUDES SYMPHONIQUES : FICHE TECHNIQUE.

Les Titres attribuées à chaque étude relèvent de notre seule responsabilité (DJ) Le présent disque : Robert Schumann (1810-1856) « Symphonische Etuden opus 13 », composées en 1834-35, édition première en 1837, avec réintégration des cinq Etudes posthumes après l’Etude IX. En 1852 (Schumann est toujours vivant), une nouvelle édition, intitulée Etudes en forme de variations, amputée des Etudes III et IX, ainsi que des corrections mineures, est publiée à Hambourg, toujours sans les Etudes posthumes. Puis grâce à Brahms, on s’avise de l’existence première des Cinq Etudes, qu’on édite à Bonn de façon posthume en 1873. On joue aujourd’hui volontiers la version 1837 augmentée des Cinq Etudes posthumes, trop belles pour qu’on les oublie, nonobstant la décision de Schumann en 1837 et après. C’est le cas du présent disque. Mais à quelle place parmi les douze Etudes traditionnelles ?

Les Etudes posthumes sont d’une beauté telle qu’on regretterait vraiment leur absence. Je me demande parfois pourquoi Schumann les a écartées. Souci de structure ? Mais loin de détruire l’architecture de l’œuvre, elles l’enrichissent. Elles sont toutes tournées vers l’introspection, le rêve...C’est Eusebius qui nous parle. Où les placer ? Plusieurs possibilités. On peut, comme faisait Cortot, les répartir ici et là, ou alors les jouer « en bloc » : j’ai adopté cette solution (après la IX° Etude). Le Finale, avec son allure de Marche brillante a pour moi un côté « libérateur », dans son énergie jubilatoire : c’est la conclusion irrésistible d’une œuvre grandiose.

Eusebius parle ? Oui : dans une œuvre où Florestan semble conduire la danse (notamment avec le Finale) ! Quel dialogue ! Ces « Etudes » sont « symphoniques » en ce qu’elles ( ?) cherchent l’orchestre. En cette période dévouée au piano solo, Schumann regarde déjà ailleurs. Elles n’ont rien à voir avec Chopin, ou Liszt. Ni avec la « littérature », dont Schumann était si empli.

On aurait tort de ne voir chez lui que le génie fantasque, plein d’ardeur romantique, et aux inspirations contradictoires. Le souci de pureté, de classicisme, ne l’a jamais quitté. Il n’aurait pas été si génial s’il n’avait été « que » littéraire !

KREISLERIANA Paradoxe de Schumann, pris entre « littérature » et seul souci d’écriture. L’œuvre qui relève de la pure écriture, les Etudes Symphoniques, peuvent se laisser décrire une à une en termes« pittoresques » (voir ci-dessus : Fiche technique), tandis que la partition empreinte de littérature ne permet pas une telle description. Les Kreisleriana (1838) tirent leur nom du personnage littéraire dessiné par E.T.A. Hoffmann(1776-1822), dans une œuvre de même titre (1814), dont le héros est le maître de chapelle Johann Kreisler, déjà présent dans des écrits antérieurs. Les Kreisleriana, au nombre de treize réparties en deux cahiers (six et sept respectivement), sont des textes, assez courts – Nouvelles ? Souvenirs ? « Fantaisies » plutôt, qui butinent divers aspects de la réalité musicale. Il serait tout à fait hors de propos de chercher à les affilier, ou au moins huit d’entre eux, à l’une des huit pièces qui composent la partition de Schumann. Mais celles-ci, dans leur apparente impassibilité musicale, racontent quasiment tout de même...une histoire de sexe !

Huit pièces. Quatre impaires (1, 3, 5, 7), entreprenantes et extraverties (« Florestan »), sont dans des tonalités mineures (autour de ré et sol). Trois autres, paires (2, 4, 6) donnent plutôt la parole à Eusebius, rétracté, mélancolique, voire déchiré, qui exhale sa plainte, ou plutôt sa réflexion, en majeur (souvent si bémol). Une dernière pièce (8), fantomatique ou faussement festive, concluet sur une énigme (en mineur) – d’une façon qui a peut-être donné des idées à Albéniz (Iberia). Grande tentation d’affilier ces Kreisleriana au jeu d’une syntaxe du masculin et du féminin.

A part cela, l’utilisation de la polyphonie et du contrepoint, notamment dans la 2ème pièce, montre comment un pur romantique peut être maître dans le maniement d’une écriture « à la Bach ». Le grand interprète de Schumann devra décidément être un boulimique de toute musique, au répertoire impressionnant.

En tant qu’interprète, je me nourris de toute musique. Très tôt, j’ai été fortement impressionné par la conviction d’Arrau : pour lui, un interprète devait être comme un caméléon, capable de se sentir à l’aise dans les esthétiques les plus diverses. Bien sûr, il y a des musiques dans lesquelles on se sent inévitablement plus « chez soi » ; là, votre tempérament, votre sensibilité, interviennent. Néanmoins, je trouve que vous devez être capable, avec l’aide de l’étude et de l’intuition, d’habiter et de traduire le message d’un monde qui semble a priori éloigné de vous. Cela dit, il est clair également que nous avons des exemples très remarquables de « spécialistes », dont la réussite, dans le domaine de l’interprétation, est grande. Et je peux comprendre que, le répertoire étant si vaste, on puisse considérer qu’un choix est nécessaire.

Ces artistes-là, je les admire sincèrement. Il n’y a pas, d’ailleurs, et heureusement, une voie plus juste qu’une autre : à condition qu’elle corresponde à des nécessités intérieures.

1838. The decade was coming to an end. It had been, for Schumann, the decade of the piano, almost the sole confidant of a youth sustained by an essential passion for Clara Wieck, the addressee of the ‘great cry’ that opens the Fantasie op.17 (1836), but also omnipresent as inspirer and interpreter of the Kreisleriana op.16 (1838). Ernestine von Fricken had preceded her – a youthful love affair that inspired not only Carnaval (its theme based on the name of the small town of Asch where she resided) but also the Études Symphoniques. When he was at last officially united with Clara as a couple (1840), Schumann moved on to other things: lieder, chamber music, symphonies, and other large-scale works, with little music for the piano (except for the Concerto and a few other appealing pieces). The decade 1830-40, which can be further narrowed to the years between 1833 (the Toccata op.7) and 1838, was thus almost exclusively devoted to the piano.

The Toccata op.7 The composition occurred in two stages: an initial version in 1830, at the time of the reveries of the apprentice pianist, and a revision in 1834, the year of the Études Symphoniques; in this, to be sure, he still steers a virtuoso course (double notes, octaves, and so on), but in a sweep of rising enthusiasm that is pure Schumann.

The concern for transcendent virtuosity, which he didn’t possess to the same degree as a Chopin or a Liszt, seems nonetheless to lie at the origins of the Toccata, with its double notes, its extensions, its octaves, and the rest. But here Schumann achieves a miracle: a work in its own right, not only dazzling, but above all beautiful, full of élan, of humour, of overflowing imagination . . .

Chopin 1830-40: the only ‘competition’ for Schumann at the same level, in this domain, was that of Chopin, whose music he appreciated, though the feeling was not entirely mutual. Schumann dedicated Kreisleriana to him, and Chopin politely reciprocated with the Second Ballade. Liszt had not yet really begun his career as a great composer for the piano. It is naturally a great temptation to ask one of today’s eminent Chopin interpreters, at the moment he devotes a disc to Schumann, how he arbitrates between these two geniuses.

NG. As we all know, the admiration that Schumann felt for Chopin, right from the latter’s first works, was not returned; music steeped in ‘literature’ was too remote from the ideals of pure music Chopin cultivated all his life. Rereading Schumann’s admirable ‘Advice to Young Musicians’, one realises the extent to which, for him, true understanding emerged from a process of cultural maturation, and a genuine dialogue with the other manifestations of art and thought. And, in the end, a process of maturation in terms of morality, the laws of which are also those of art. As an interpreter, I need both worlds, Chopin’s and Schumann’s: they are constantly complementary.

One would like to add: Chopin’s style is a miracle of purity, of elegance, of classicism. Schumann’s style, awkward, jerky, ‘gothic’, must have been incomprehensible to the Polish composer.

Editions Schumann/Chopin: it’s almost like an essay subject! One could draw up a well-nigh limitless list of contrasts between them. That of the editions is by no means the least crucial. Chopin, who was a quasi-obsessive perfectionist, was forever revising his works. Schumann presents fewer perplexities. The pianist can find a point of reference.

In principle, I use Henle. But for Kreisleriana I also consulted the Clara Schumann Edition. In Chopin, there are striking divergences (though the variants are of equal musical value) between the first editions, published virtually simultaneously in different countries. Only the performer’s own preferences and taste can decide among them.

Aside from the question of the ‘posthumous études’ in op.13, Schumann’s works pose fewer problems.

von Variationen, with Études III and IX removed and other, minor corrections, was published in Hamburg, still without the posthumous études. Then Brahms alerted opinion to the existence of the five original études, which were issued in Bonn in 1873, seventeen years after the composer’s death. Nowadays pianists tend to play the 1837 version with the addition of the five posthumous études, which are too fine to be neglected, in spite of Schumann’s decision to remove them in 1837 and subsequently.

Such is the case on the present disc. But where should one place them among the twelve ‘traditional’ études?

The posthumous études are so beautiful that one would really regret their absence.

I sometimes wonder why Schumann excluded them. Out of a concern for structure?

But, far from destroying the architecture of the work, they enrich it. They all look in the direction of introspection, of dreams – this is Eusebius speaking to us. Where to place them? There are several possibilities. One can, like Cortot, disperse them here and here, or else play them ‘en bloc’: I have adopted that solution (after Étude IX).

The finale, which has the cut of a brilliant march, has a ‘liberating’ aspect for me, in its jubilant energy: it forms the irresistible conclusion to a grandiose work.

Eusebius speaks? Yes: in a work where Florestan seems to lead the dance (notably in the finale)! What dialogue! These ‘Études’ are ‘symphonic’ in that they reach out towards the orchestra. In this period devoted to the solo piano, Schumann was already looking elsewhere. They have nothing to do with Chopin or Liszt. Or with the ‘literature’ that so impregnated Schumann.

It would be wrong to see in Schumann only the whimsical genius, full of Romantic ardour, shot through with contradictory inspirations. The concern for purity, for classicism, never left him. He wouldn’t have been such a great composer if he had been ‘only’ literary!

KREISLERIANA There lies the paradox of Schumann, caught between ‘literature’ and the writing of abstract music. The work that falls into the category of ‘pure’ music, the Études Symphoniques, can be described, piece after piece, in ‘picturesque’ terms (see the ‘overview’ above), while the score informed by literature does not permit a description of that kind. Kreisleriana (1838) takes its name from the literary character depicted by E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) in a work of the same title (published as part of his Fantasiestücke in Callots Manier, 1814), whose protagonist is the Kapellmeister Johann Kreisler, already present in earlier writings by Hoffmann. The Kreisleriana section consists of thirteen fairly short texts, divided into two parts of six and seven pieces respectively. What exactly are these texts? Novellas? Reminiscences? More accurately, ‘fantasies’, touching on various aspects of musical life.

It would be quite irrelevant to try to link them, or at least eight of them, to the eight pieces that go to make up Schumann’s score. Yet these, in their apparent musical impassibility, nonetheless virtually tell a story of sex!

Eight pieces. The four odd-numbered ones (1, 3, 5, 7), vigorous and extraverted (‘Florestan’), are in minor keys (centring on D and G). Three of the even-numbered ones (2, 4, 6), by contrast, give the floor to Eusebius, withdrawn, melancholy, anguished even, who utters his complaint, or rather his reflection, in the major key (often B flat).

A last piece (8), ghostly or deceptively festive, concludes on an enigma (in the minor) – in a way that perhaps gave ideas to Albéniz (Iberia). One is greatly tempted to relate these Kreisleriana to the interplay of a syntax of masculine and feminine. Aside from that, the use of polyphony and counterpoint, notably in the second piece, demonstrates how a pure Romantic can still be a master at handling the ‘Bachian’ style. The outstanding interpreter of Schumann must decidedly have an insatiable appetite for the whole of music, with an impressive repertoire.

As a performer, I nourish my inspiration on all kinds of music. Very early on, the view of Claudio Arrau made a powerful impact on me: he was convinced that a performer must be like a chameleon, capable of feeling at ease in the most varied aesthetics.

Of course, there are types of music where you inevitably feel more ‘at home’; that’s where your temperament, your sensibility, come in. Nevertheless, I think we ought to be capable, with the help of study and intuition, to inhabit and convey the message of a world that seems a priori remote from us. That said, it’s equally clear that there are quite remarkable examples of ‘specialists’ who achieve outstanding success in the interpretation of a given style. And I can understand that, the repertoire being so vast, one may consider that it’s necessary to make a choice. I sincerely admire those artists. Fortunately for us, there isn’t one attitude that is more ‘correct’ than another: just as long as it always corresponds to an inner need.
