Cette somme considérable témoigne de la très grande proximité de Jos van Immerseel avec l’œuvre de Mozart et regroupe, dans un même coffret, des interprétations aussi inspirées que documentées, qui ont fait et font toujours référence.

This set of six CDs brings together all the previous releases on Zig-Zag Territoires of Mozart works performed by Jos van Immerseel: Symphonies nos.29, 39, 40 & 41, the Bassoon Concerto, Violin Concertos nos.2 and 3, the Concerto for two pianos, the Concerto for flute and harp, Horn Concerto no.3, and seven sonatas for piano and violin (K376, 377, 379, 380, 454, 481, 526).

This impressive body of work testifies to Jos van Immerseel’s close rapport with Mozart’s music. Here in a single box is a series of recordings, as inspired and they are historically informed, that were greeted as and still remain benchmark versions.

ANIMA ETERNA BRUGGE L’orchestre fondé par Jos van Immerseel en 1987 s’est initialement fait connaître par sa pratique des exécutions historiques : l’étude critique des partitions et l’utilisation d’instruments authentiques dans des orchestrations fidèles à l’époque. De la musique pour connaisseurs donc, qui apprécient de se voir proposer une nouvelle approche d’un répertoire qu’ils pensaient connaître. Mais si le public n’a fait que s’étoffer en plus de vingt ans, ce n’est pas en raison de la rigueur scientifique avec laquelle chaque nouveau projet est abordé, ni du savoir-faire des musiciens et de leur chef d’orchestre, mais pour ce qu’ils produisent: la musique.

Anima Eterna Brugge est un orchestre qui fonctionne dans le cadre de projets, en s’attaquant cinq à six fois par an à un nouveau répertoire. Il s’ensuit un dialogue intense entre les musiciens et le directeur artistique. Rien ne va de soi, tout est matière à étude. Qu’y a-t-il exactement dans la partition? Comment l’a entendue le compositeur à sa table de travail, dans sa tête? Quelle est la distribution idéale de l’orchestre et à quelles conventions convient-il de se plier? Quel était autrefois le son d’un basson? Quel potentiel d’expression personnelle le morceau offre-t-il? Tous les membres de l’orchestre font cause commune pour mettre à nu les secrets du morceau de musique, chacun avec son savoir-faire, son instrument et sa relation personnelle avec la musique. Le fruit de ce travail de fond est magique. Graduellement, toute antinomie entre liberté artistique et nécessité historique s’estompe et Mozart... obtient gain de cause: se faire entendre par l’auditeur tel qu’en lui-même.

Même la musique du dix-neuvième siècle et du premier tières du vingtième siècle qui est moins souvent abordée sous l’angle historique que la musique baroque, renaît d’un souffle nouveau dans le laboratoire d’Anima Eterna Brugge.

En une nouvelle série de CDs avec le label français Zig-Zag Territoires, Anima Eterna Brugge s’assure d’ores et déjà d’une place de choix dans la discothèque personnelle des mélomanes, mais pour vraiment sentir comment van Immerseel et ses musiciens réinjectent du sang dans les veines de Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz, Rimsky-Korsakov, Liszt, Poulenc, Ravel, Schubert et même Johann Strauss fils, il ne peut y avoir d’autre option que d’assister à leurs concerts.

Depuis 2003 Jos van Immerseel et Anima Eterna Brugge sont en résidence au nouveau Concertgebouw de Bruges et à compter de la saison 2010/2011 artiste et ensemble associés à l’Opéra de Dijon. Ensemble ils ont réalisés plus de 80 enregistrements, pour Accent, Channel Classics, Sony et pour la « Collection Anima Eterna » sur le label parisien Zig-Zag Territoires.

En 2012, Anima Eterna Brugge célèbrera son 25ème anniversaire. Pour fêter l’événement, l’orchestre a choisi l’insaisissable univers musical de Claude Debussy, suivi par un projet Mozart (Requiem et Grabmusik) qui marquera également le début de la collaboration avec le Collegium Vocale Gent qui se poursuivra les saisons suivantes.

Anima Eterna Brugge conclura cette année de célébration avec une reprise de deux Symphonies de Schubert, et des œuvres de Beethoven et Rossini.

Après la sortie en avril 2011 d’un enregistrement consacré à Francis Poulenc (Concerto pour 2 pianos avec Jos van Immerseel et Claire Chevallier jouant leurs pianos Erard, Le Concert champêtre avec Katerina Chroboková au clavecin et La Suite française d’après Claude Gervaise) sont parus simultanément en octobre 2012 un CD consacré à Debussy avec Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, La Mer, Images ainsi que la réédition en un coffret de 4 CDs de l’intégrale des Symphonies de Schubert enregistrées en 1996 et 1997 (Label Zig-Zag Territoires).

JOS VAN IMMERSEEL Jos van Immerseel, né à Anvers, a étudié le piano (avec Eugène Traey), l’orgue (Flor Peeters), le clavecin (Kenneth Gilbert), le chant (Lucie Frateur) et la direction d’orchestre (Daniel Sternefeld). En 1973, il a remporté le premier concours de clavecin de Paris.

Son intérêt pour une grande diversité de sujets l’a amené à étudier en autodidacte l’organologie, la rhétorique et l’histoire du piano-forte.

Il a dirigé des master classes en Europe, aux États-Unis et au Japon, et il a enseigné à la Scola Cantorum Basiliensis, au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, à l’Indiana University (Bloomington), au Kunitachi-College (Tokyo) et au Sweelinck Conservatorium d’Amsterdam. En tant que chef invité, il a notamment dirigé l’Akademie für Alte Musik de Berlin, la Wiener Akademie, Tafelmusik Toronto, le Budapest Festival Orchestra et Musica Florea de Prague.

Au fil des années, Jos van Immerseel s’est constitué une collection sans pareille de claviers historiques dont il prend personnellement soin et dont il met des exemplaires à contribution lors de ses concerts et de ses enregistrements. Jos van Immerseel a réalisé plus de 100 enregistrements, tous sur instruments historiques.

En 1987, Jos van Immerseel a créé son propre ensemble, Anima Eterna Brugge, à la composition changeante en fonction des projets, mais faisant invariablement appel aux instruments historiques.

A l’occasion du 25ème anniversaire de son orchestre, Anima Eterna Brugge, Jos van Immerseel a exposé plusieurs instruments de sa collection pendant l’événement consacré à la Maison Erard. En collaboration avec le Concertgebouw de Bruges, les musiciens de l’orchestre et des spécialistes dans le domaine de la facture d’instru-

ments ont accueilli le public pour des démonstrations, des concerts et des discussions autour de ce grand facteur de pianos et de harpes.

Depuis 2002, Jos van Immerseel est responsable de la collection Anima Eterna sur le label Zig-Zag Territoires (Outhere). Par ailleurs, il joue régulièrement de la musique de chambre et enregistre avec Claire Chevallier (Rachmaninov, Franck, Infante, Poulenc, Saint Saëns – œuvres à 2 pianos), Midori Seiler (Beethoven – intégrale des sonates pour violon), Sergei Istomin (Liszt – Pièces tardives pour violoncelle et piano) et Thomas Bauer (Schubert – Winterreise), toujours pour le label ZZT (Outhere).

ANIMA ETERNA BRUGGE The orchestra founded by Jos van Immerseel in 1987 initially became known for its historically informed performances: critical study of the scores it plays and the utilisation of authentic instruments in orchestrations faithful to the period concerned. Music, as it were, for connoisseurs, who liked being offered a new approach to a repertoire they thought they knew already. But if the orchestra’s audience has constantly grown over the past twenty-five years, it is not because of the scientific rigour with which each new project is tackled or the skill of the musicians and their conductor, but for what they produce: the music.

Anima Eterna Brugge is an orchestra that functions on the basis of individual projects, tackling a new repertory five or six times a year. There follows an intensive dialogue between the musicians and the artistic director. Nothing is taken for granted; everything is subjected to scrutiny. What exactly is in the score? How did the composer hear it at his desk, in his head? What are the ideal orchestral forces, and which conventions should be followed? What did a bassoon sound like at that time? What potential for personal expression does the work offer? All the members of the orchestra join together to expose the secrets of the piece of music, each with their individual expertise, their instrument, and their personal relationship with the music. The result of this in-depth work is magical. Gradually, all opposition between artistic freedom and historical imperatives fades away, and Mozart comes out on top: at last he is heard in his true colours.

Even the music of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, less often interpreted from the historical perspective than Baroque music, gains a new lease of life in the laboratory of Anima Eterna Brugge.

With a new series of CDs on the French label Zig-Zag Territoires, Anima Eterna Brugge is already assured of a place of choice in the music-lover’s personal library, but if one wants truly to understand how van Immerseel and his musicians inject new blood into the veins of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz, Rimsky-Korsakov, Liszt, Poulenc, Ravel, Schubert, and even Johann Strauss II, there is no other option than to attend their concerts.

Jos van Immerseel and Anima Eterna Brugge have been in residence at the new Concertgebouw in Bruges since 2003, and from the 2010/11 season onwards they are also associate artist and ensemble at the Opéra de Dijon. Together they have made more than eighty recordings, for Accent, Channel Classics, Sony, and the ‘Anima Eterna Collection’ on Zig-Zag Territoires.

In 2012 Anima Eterna Brugge celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary. To celebrate the event, the orchestra chose the enigmatic musical universe of Claude Debussy, followed by a Mozart project (Requiem and Grabmusik) that also marked the start of a collaboration with Collegium Vocale Gent that will continue in subsequent seasons.

The orchestra concluded this year of celebration with a revival of two Schubert symphonies, and works by Beethoven and Rossini.

After the release in April 2011 of a recording of music by Francis Poulenc (the Concerto for two pianos with Jos van Immerseel and Claire Chevallier playing their Érard pianos, the Concert champêtre with Katerina Chroboková on the harpsichord, and the Suite française after Claude Gervaise), the month of October 2012 saw the simultaneous release of a CD devoted to Debussy (Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, La Mer, Images) and the reissue in a four-CD box of the complete recording of the Schubert symphonies made in 1996 and 1997. All these recordings were issued on Zig-Zag Territoires.

JOS VAN IMMERSEEL Jos van Immerseel was born in Antwerp and studied the piano with Eugène Traey, the organ with Flor Peeters, the harpsichord with Kenneth Gilbert, singing with Lucie Frateur, and conducting with Daniel Sternefeld. In 1973 he won the first Paris Harpsichord Competition. His interest in a wide variety of subjects led him to teach himself organology, rhetoric, and the history of the fortepiano.

He has given masterclasses in Europe, the United States, and Japan, and has taught at the Scola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, the Indiana University Bloomington, Kunitachi College in Tokyo, and the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. He has appeared as a guest conductor with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Wiener Akademie, Tafelmusik Toronto, the Budapest Festival Orchestra, and Musica Florea of Prague, among others.

Over the years, Jos van Immerseel has built up a matchless collection of historical keyboard instruments, which he maintains personally and uses in his concerts and recordings. He has made more than one hundred recordings, all on period instruments.

In 1987 he founded his own ensemble, Anima Eterna Brugge, whose size and membership vary according to its projects, but which always uses period instruments.

On the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of Anima Eterna Brugge, Jos van Immerseel exhibited several instruments from his collection during a special event at the Maison Érard in Paris. In collaboration with the Bruges Concertgebouw, the musicians of the orchestra and specialists in the field of instrument making welcomed the public to demonstrations, concerts and discussions focusing on this great builder

of pianos and harps.

Since 2002, Jos van Immerseel has been artistic director of the Anima Eterna Collection on the Zig-Zag Territoires label (Outhere). He also appears regularly in chamber music and has recorded this repertory for ZZT with Claire Chevallier (Rachmaninoff, Franck, Infante, Poulenc, Saint-Saëns – works for two pianos), Midori Seiler (Beethoven – complete sonatas for piano and violin), Sergei Istomin (Liszt – late pieces for cello and piano), and Thomas Bauer (Schubert – Winterreise).
