Do we choose a project or does the project choose us ?

Hikaye began to ferment within me a few years ago after I discovered works by Arno Babadjanian and Vasilije Mokranjac. I became fascinated by the compositions and piano playing of Babadjanian as well as by his open mind.

Mokranjac deeply touched me by his melancholic melodies, simply deep and deeply simple, by his luminous darkness, and his mysterious honesty.

I wanted to immerse myself in their worlds, to discover and play their music. During this process I realised that I’d set my feet in a space-time that moved me more than I’d imagined, so I chose to explore this part of myself even further.

I was born in Istanbul into a family whose origins and places of residence are and have been quite varied, including Turkey, Yugoslavia, Greece, Switzerland, Japan and Armenia.

Departures had been forced for some of the recent generations; some members of my family had to emigrate, whilst others, myself included, had ‘chosen’ to leave: I left Turkey to study in Belgium when I was still a teenager. Did I really choose to leave or was I so unconsciously conditioned by family memory that I did not see any other option to leaving the country ? I don’t not know how to define this feeling clearly, but today I still feel a deep and inexplicable pain concerning any aspect of separation.

I chose pieces inspired by traditional music for this album; they have a strong connection with rhythm and dance, but are still very lyrical. My idea for this project was to create a family reunion in sound by choosing music and composers from their various countries of residence.

The modernity of the selected works and their composers is very natural and organic, thanks to the traditional music that was their inspiration. The rhythmical aspect is particularly important in most of the pieces, with a particular use of uneven time signatures and polyrhythms.

The Eight Greek Island Dances by Yannis Konstantinidis (1903-1984) were composed in 1954 and are characterized by uneven traditional beats as well as ornaments peculiar to Greek culture. They bring radiance and a welcoming light to the programme.

The Six Pictures by Arno Babadjanian (1921-1983) were composed in 1965; they have their roots in Armenian folklore but possess a very personal and daring pianistic vision. Those six pictures are the pillars on which the whole programme was built.

Küçük Çoban, composed by Ulvi Cemal Erkin (1906-1972) in 1937, is the second piece of Duyuşlar. A little shepherd plays a very simple and touching flute melody that takes the listener into a magnificent landscape of pure and unsophisticated beauty.

The Six Dances by Vasilije Mokranjac (1923-1984) were composed between 1950-1957; these pieces display an extreme sensitivity and sensuality, with an uncompromising passage from refreshing asceticism and simplicity to energising rhythmic intensity through a development that is almost theatrical in character.

Jeux, composed by Stéphane Galland (1969) between 2010 and 2012, are the most recent works and probably the most atypical of the repertoire. These short pieces are each focused on a specific technical aspect of piano playing; they make use of repetitive patterns that develop obsessively and create a trance-like feeling reminiscent of the rhythmic dance traditions of Africa, the Balkans, and even modern popular and electronic music. I’m extremely happy and honoured to be involved in the world premiere recording of these exciting pieces.

Ex-Voto, composed in 1914 by Ernest Bloch (1880-1959), a Swiss who took American nationality, expresses a strong feeling of space and air as well as exuding an atmosphere of distant nostalgia. An Ex-voto is an offering made in fulfilment of a vow and is therefore related to my own desire to realise this personal project. This piece is a representation of my wish to evoke, through Fuga Libera

music in general and the works on this recording in particular, not only my personal family history but also the history of humanity; all people everywhere who, as a result of vows taken, realise their will and their destiny.

César Franck’s Danse lente (1822-1890), composed in 1885, is the oldest work in the programme. This short piece, highly lyrical and seemingly in suspension, provides irrevocable evidence of César Franck’s genius, his lyricism and his command of timbre. The rhythmical aspect is here present as it is, as the title indicates, a slow waltz, but the singing and melodic aspect is the most striking.

The Litany of Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996) was composed in 1950/1989 and exudes a feeling of profound sadness compounded with separation. This work was composed after the death of Michael Vyner, one of Takemitsu’s close friends. For me, such a feeling of separation is related to my family and my country of origin; it strikes a deeply emotional chord within me.

I’m also totally thrilled to be the first artist to record on an innovatory grand piano model created by Belgium piano manufacturer Chris Maene in close collaboration with the world-renowned architect Rafael Viñoly.

The Viñoly Straight Strung Grand Piano by Chris Maene, a unique instrument for the 21st century.

Chris Maene developed an innovative grand piano merging tradition and innovation by creating a modern instrument with the 19th century straight strung concept: a special project for star pianist Daniel Barenboim, bringing back the unique soundworld of the best 19th century grand pianos with the brilliance and power of a contemporary concert grand.

The result was exquisite and since Daniel Barenboim inaugurated his new straight strung grand piano in 2015, the Chris Maene Factory has developed several straight strung grand piano models.

One exciting project however was never made public until now.

The renowned New York based architect Rafael Viñoly, famous for his extraordinary buildings such as 432 Park Avenue NY, The Cleveland Museum of Art or the Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo, is a passionate pianist and befriended with the greatest pianists all over the world.

After having seen and heard Barenboim’s straight strung grand piano, he felt the new concept of Chris Maene was the perfect basis for a new generation of grand pianos.

He started to design himself a straight strung grand piano in collaboration with Chris Maene and, contrary to most designers, Rafael Viñoly was involved in all further aspects of the development and production.

Therefore the instrument is not only unique in design and its concept but above all it appears to be a tremendous grand piano with a superb sound and a flawless action.

Rafael Viñoly is an exceptional architect with a clear vision and a profound passion for his creations. In designing this instrument, the emphasis was not just the visual aspect but the piano as an entity, therefore he revisited the traditional set up of a grand piano.

The natural ergonomy of the keyboard and the physics involved in the straight strung concept were key.

It was an enormous challenge to materialize his ideas and drawings and integrate them into the rules of traditional piano building, leading to an intense and fruitful collaboration.

The result is astonishing: a radically new concert grand arose from Rafael Viñoly’s ideas, one that combines unique design with exquisite sound!

Hikaye a commencé à fermenter en moi il y a quelques années, après que j’ai découvert les œuvres d’Arno Babadjanian et de Vasilije Mokranjac. Les compositions et le jeu de piano de Babadjanian m’ont fascinée, tout comme son ouverture d’esprit. Mokranjac m’a profondément touchée par ses mélodies mélancoliques, simplement profondes et profondément simples, par sa noirceur lumineuse et son honnêteté mystérieuse. J’ai voulu me plonger dans leurs mondes, découvrir et jouer leur musique. J’ai alors réalisé que j’avais mis les pieds dans un espace-temps qui m’émouvait plus que ce que j’aurais pu imaginer ; j’ai donc choisi d’explorer plus avant cette part de moi-même.

Je suis née à Istanbul dans une famille dont les origines et les lieux de résidence ont toujours été assez variés : Turquie, Yougoslavie, Grèce, Suisse, Japon, Arménie.

Des départs forcés sont survenus dans les récentes générations ; des membres de ma famille ont dû émigrer, tandis que d’autres, dont je fais partie, ont « choisi » de s’en aller : j’ai quitté la Turquie pour étudier en Belgique alors que j’étais encore adolescente. Ai-je vraiment choisi de partir ou étais-je inconsciemment conditionnée par la mémoire familiale, n’envisageant ainsi pas d’autre option pour mon avenir ? Je ne sais comment clairement définir ce sentiment, mais aujourd’hui encore, tous les aspects de la séparation ravivent en moi une blessure profonde et inexplicable.

Pour cet album, j’ai choisi des pièces inspirées par la musique traditionnelle ; elles possèdent un lien fort avec le rythme et la danse, mais sont aussi très lyriques. Mon idée était de créer une réunion de famille sonore en choisissant de la musique et des compositeurs de leurs différents pays de résidence.

La modernité des œuvres choisies et de leurs compositeurs est très naturelle et organique, grâce à la musique traditionnelle qui fut leur inspiration. L’aspect rythmique est particulièrement important dans la plupart des pièces, qui font un usage particulier des mesures et polyrythmies.

Les Huit Danses des îles grecques de Yannis Konstantinidis (1903-1984) ont été composées en 1954 et sont caractérisées par des rythmes traditionnels irréguliers ainsi que par des ornements propres à la culture grecque. Elles apportent un éclat et une lumière chaleureuse au programme.

Les Six Tableaux d’Arno Babadjanian (1921-1983), composés en 1965, sont des œuvres inspirées du folklore arménien mais présentent une vision pianistique très personnelle et audacieuse. Ces tableaux sont les piliers sur lesquels tout le programme est construit.

Jeux, composés par Stéphane Galland (1969) entre 2010 et 2012, sont les œuvres les plus récentes et sans doute les plus atypiques de l’album. Ces courtes pièces se concentrent chacune sur un aspect technique spécifique du jeu de piano ; elles font usage de motifs répétitifs qui se développent de manière obsessionnelle et créent un sentiment de transe qui rappelle les traditions rythmiques de la danse d’Afrique, des Balkans, et même de la musique moderne populaire et électronique. Je suis très heureuse et honorée de participer au premier enregistrement mondial de ces magnifiques pièces.

Ex-Voto, composée en 1914 par Ernest Bloch (1880-1959), un Suisse devenu américain, exhale une puissante impression d’espace et de souffle tout en évoquant une atmosphère de lointaine nostalgie. Un ex-voto est une offrande faite en remerciement pour l’accomplissement d’un vœu ; on peut dès lors le Fuga Libera

mettre en lien avec mon propre désir de réaliser ce projet. Cette pièce est un témoignage de mon désir d’évoquer, par la musique en général et les œuvres de cet enregistrement en particulier, mon histoire familiale et l’histoire de l’humanité ; de rendre hommage à toutes les personnes, partout dans le monde, qui, après avoir formulé un vœu, ont réalisé leur désir et leur destin.

La Danse lente de César Franck (1822-1890), composée en 1885, est la plus ancienne œuvre du programme. Cette courte pièce, très lyrique et comme en suspension, témoigne irrévocablement du génie du compositeur, de son lyrisme et de sa maîtrise du timbre. Ce n’est pas la même chose en ce qui concerne le rythme qui est très présent car il s'agit d’une danse, mais l’aspect chantant et mélodique est le plus frappant.

La Litanie de Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996) a été composée en 1950/1989 et dégage un sentiment de profonde tristesse et de séparation. Cette œuvre a été composée après la mort de Michael Vyner, l’un des plus proches amis du compositeur. Pour moi, un tel sentiment de séparation est lié à ma famille et à mon pays d’origine ; cela fait vibrer en moi une corde particulièrement sensible.

Je suis également ravie et très honorée d’être la première artiste à enregistrer sur le modèle de piano à queue créé par le facteur de pianos belge Chris Maene en collaboration étroite avec l’architecte de renommée mondiale Rafael Viñoly.

Le Viñoly Straight Strung Grand Piano (piano à queue à cordes parallèles) de Chris Maene, un instrument unique pour le XXIe siècle

Chris Maene a développé un piano à queue alliant tradition et innovation en créant un instrument moderne avec le concept de cordes parallèles du XIXe siècle : un projet spécialement conçu pour le pianiste renommé Daniel Barenboim, qui a ainsi fait revivre l’univers sonore unique des plus grands pianos à queue du XIXe siècle avec l’éclat et la puissance d’un grand piano de concert contemporain.

Le résultat est extraordinaire et depuis que Daniel Barenboim a inauguré son nouveau piano en 2015, l’atelier de Chris Maene en a développé plusieurs modèles.

Un projet passionnant particulier n’avait cependant jamais été rendu public.

Le célèbre architecte basé à New York Rafael Viñoly, connu pour ses bâtiments extraordinaires (432 Park Avenue à New York, Cleveland Museum of Art, Carrasco International Airport à Montevideo notamment), est un pianiste passionné et ami des plus grands pianistes du monde.

Après avoir vu et entendu le nouveau piano de Barenboim, il a estimé que le nouveau concept de Chris Maene était le point de départ idéal pour une nouvelle génération de pianos à queue.

L’instrument est donc unique par son design et son concept, mais il se présente aussi et avant tout comme un formidable piano à la sonorité superbe et à la mécanique parfaite.

Convaincus d’avoir atteint leur but commun, Rafael Viñoly et Chris Maene lancent aujourd’hui un piano à queue à cordes parallèles révolutionnaire, prêt à se produire dans les plus grandes salles de concert et à être joué par les plus grands pianistes mondiaux.

Rafael Viñoly est un architecte exceptionnel à la vision claire et à la passion profonde pour ses créations. Lors de la conception de cet instrument, l’accent a été mis non seulement sur l’aspect visuel, mais aussi sur le piano comme entité, c’est pourquoi la configuration traditionnelle du piano à queue a été revisitée.

L’ergonomie naturelle du clavier et les propriétés physiques impliquées dans le concept ont été déterminantes.

Matérialiser ses idées et ses dessins et les intégrer dans les règles de la facture traditionnelle du piano a été un challenge immense qui a mené à une collaboration intense et fructueuse.

Le résultat est étonnant : un piano à queue de concert radicalement nouveau est né des idées de Rafael Viñoly, un modèle combinant design unique et sonorité magnifique !

Hikaye begann vor einigen Jahren in mir zu gären, nachdem ich Werke von Arno Babadjanian und Vasilije Mokranjac entdeckt hatte. Ich war fasziniert von Babadjanians Kompositionen und seinem Klavierspiel sowie von seiner Aufgeschlossenheit. Mokranjac berührte mich zutiefst mit seinen melancholischen Melodien, die einfach tief und zutiefst einfach sind, mit seiner leuchtenden Dunkelheit und seiner geheimnisvollen Wahrhaftigkeit. Ich wollte in ihre Welt eintauchen, ihre Musik entdecken und spielen. Während dieses Prozesses wurde mir klar, dass ich meine Füße in eine Raumzeit gesetzt hatte, die mich stärker bewegte, als ich mir vorgestellt hätte, und so entschied ich mich, diesen Teil meiner selbst noch weiter zu ergründen.

Ich wurde in Istanbul in eine Familie hineingeboren, deren Ursprung und Wohnsitze sehr vielfältig sind und waren, darunter die Türkei, Jugoslawien, Griechenland, die Schweiz, Japan und Armenien.

Einige meiner Familienmitglieder waren zur Auswanderung gezwungen, während andere, zu denen auch ich gehöre, sich zum Weggehen „entschieden“ haben: Als ich noch ein Teenager war, verließ ich die Türkei, um in Belgien zu studieren.

Habe ich mich tatsächlich dazu entschlossen, das Land zu verlassen, oder war ich durch Familienerinnerungen unterbewusst so konditioniert, dass ich keine andere Möglichkeit sah als zu gehen? Ich weiß nicht, wie ich dieses Gefühl klar ausdrücken soll, aber bis heute spüre ich noch immer einen tiefen und unerklärlichen Schmerz in Bezug auf jeden Aspekt der Trennung.

Für dieses Album habe ich Stücke ausgewählt, die von traditioneller Musik inspiriert sind; sie haben eine starke Verbindung zu Rhythmus und Tanz, sind aber dennoch sehr lyrisch. Meine Grundidee für dieses Projekt bestand darin, ein klingendes Familientreffen zu kreieren, indem ich Musik und Komponisten aus den verschiedenen Ländern wählte, in denen meine Familie ansässig war und ist.

Die Modernität der ausgewählten Werke und ihrer Komponisten ist sehr natürlich und organisch, dank der traditionellen Musik, die ihnen als Inspiration diente.

In den meisten Stücken ist der rhythmische Aspekt besonders wichtig, wobei insbesondere ungerade Taktarten und Polyrhythmik zum Einsatz kommen.

Yannis Konstantinidis (1903-1984) komponierte seine Eight Greek Island Dances im Jahr 1954; sie zeichnen sich durch ungleichmäßige traditionelle Rhythmen und Verzierungen aus, die typisch für die griechische Kultur sind.

Sie bringen Strahlkraft und ein einladendes Licht in das Programm.

Die Six Pictures von Arno Babadjanian (1921-1983) wurden 1965 komponiert und sind von der armenischen Folklore inspiriert, aber sie haben eine sehr persönliche und mutige pianistische Vision.

Küçük Çoban, 1937 von Ulvi Cemal Erkin (1906-1972) geschrieben, ist das zweite Stück aus dem Zyklus Duyuşlar. Ein kleiner Hirte spielt eine sehr einfache und anrührende Flötenmelodie, die den Hörer in eine herrliche Landschaft von reiner und unverfälschter Schönheit entführt.

Diese kurzen Stücke konzentrieren sich jeweils auf einen spezifischen technischen Aspekt des Klavierspiels; sie bedienen sich repetitiver Muster, die sich wie besessen entwickeln und ein tranceähnliches Gefühl erzeugen, das an die rhythmischen Tanztraditionen Afrikas, des Balkans und sogar der modernen populären und elektronischen Musik erinnert. Ich bin sehr froh und fühle mich geehrt, an der Weltersteinspielung dieser aufregenden Stücke beteiligt zu sein.

Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) war ein Schweizer, der die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft annahm. Er komponierte 1914 Ex-Voto, in Werk, in dem ein starkes Gefühl von Raum und Luft sowie eine Atmosphäre distanzierter Nostalgie zum Ausdruck kommt. Ein Ex Voto ist ein Angebot zur Erfüllung eines Gelübdes und steht daher im Zusammenhang mit meinem eigenen Wunsch, dieses persönliche Projekt zu realisieren. Dieses Stück ist ein Ausdruck meines Strebens, durch die Musik im Allgemeinen und die Werke auf dieser Aufnahme im Besonderen nicht nur meine persönliche Familiengeschichte, sondern auch die Geschichte der Menschheit heraufzubeschwören; das gilt für alle Menschen und überall, die durch Gelübde ihren Willen und ihr Schicksal erkennen.

César Francks Danse lente (1822-1890), 1885 komponiert, ist das älteste Werk des Programms. Dieses kurze Stück, sehr lyrisch und scheinbar in der Schwebe, ist ein untrüglicher Beweis für César Francks Genie, seine Lyrik und seine Beherrschung von Klangfarben. Wie aus dem Titel schon hervorgeht, spielt der Rhythmus – ein langsamer Walzer – hier eine Rolle, aber der gesangliche und melodische Aspekt ist am auffälligsten.

Litany von Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996) wurde 1950/1989 komponiert und strahlt ein Gefühl tiefer Traurigkeit aus, verbunden mit Trennungsschmerz.

Dieses Werk entstand nach dem Tod von Michael Vyner, einem engen Freund Takemitsus. Für mich ist dieses schmerzliche Gefühl der Trennung mit meiner Familie und meinem Herkunftsland verbunden; es bringt in mir eine sehr tiefe Empfindung zum Klingen.

Ich freue mich sehr darüber, dass ich die erste Künstlerin bin, die eine Aufnahme auf dem innovativen Flügel des belgischen Klavierbauers Chris Maene einspielen durfte, der in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem weltberühmten Architekten Rafael Viñoly entstand.

Das Viñoly Straight Strung Grand Piano von Chris Maene, ein einzigartiges Instrument für das 21. Jahrhundert.

Chris Maene entwickelte einen innovativen Flügel, der Tradition und Innovation vereint, indem er ein modernes Instrument mit dem Bauprinzip aus dem 19. Jahrhundert schuf, indem die Saiten parallel gespannt werden: eine Sonderanfertigung für den Starpianisten Daniel Barenboim, die die einzigartige Klangwelt der besten Flügel des 19. Jahrhunderts zurückbringt und mit der Brillanz und Kraft eines zeitgenössischen Konzertflügels verbindet.

Das Ergebnis war exquisit und seit Daniel Barenboim 2015 sein neues Straight Strung Grand Piano einweihte, hat die Klavierbaufirma Chris Maene mehrere Flügelmodelle mit parallel gespannten Saiten entwickelt.

Ein spannendes Projekt wurde jedoch bisher nicht publik gemacht.

Der renommierte New Yorker Architekt Rafael Viñoly, bekannt für seine außergewöhnlichen Gebäude wie 432 Park Avenue NY, das Cleveland Museum of Art oder den Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo, ist selbst ein leidenschaftlicher Pianist und mit den größten Pianisten der Welt befreundet.

Nachdem er Barenboims Flügel mit parallelen Saiten gesehen und gehört hatte, war er der Meinung, Chris Maenes neues Konzept sei die perfekte Grundlage für eine neue Generation von Flügeln.

In Zusammenarbeit mit Chris Maene begann er, einen Flügel mit parallelen Saiten zu entwerfen, und im Gegensatz zu den meisten Designern war Rafael Viñoly an allen weiteren Aspekten der Entwicklung und Produktion beteiligt.

Daher ist das Instrument nicht nur in Design und Konzept einzigartig, sondern wirkt vor allem wie ein fantastischer Flügel mit einem hervorragenden Klang und einer makellosen Mechanik.

Rafael Viñoly und Chris Maene sind davon überzeugt, dass sie ihr gemeinsames Ziel nun erreicht haben, und bringen einen revolutionären Flügel mit parallelen Saiten auf den Markt, der für den Einsatz in den wichtigsten Konzertsälen bereit ist und von den weltbesten Pianisten gespielt werden soll.

Rafael Viñoly ist ein außergewöhnlicher Architekt mit einer klaren Vision und einer ausgeprägten Leidenschaft für seine Arbeiten. Bei der Entwicklung dieses Instruments lag der Schwerpunkt nicht nur auf dem visuellen Aspekt, sondern auch auf dem Klavier als Ganzem, und aus diesem Grund setzte sich Viñoly intensiv mit der traditionellen Bauweise eines Flügels auseinander.

Die natürliche Ergonomie der Klaviatur und die physikalischen Eigenschaften der parallel gespannten Saiten waren entscheidend.

Es war eine große Herausforderung für Rafael Viñoly, seine Ideen und Zeichnungen zu konkretisieren und an die Gegebenheiten des traditionellen Klavierbaus anzupassen. Dieser Prozess führte zu einer intensiven und erfolgreichen Zusammenarbeit mit Chris Maene.

Das Ergebnis ist erstaunlich: Aus den Entwürfen Rafael Viñolys ist ein radikal neuer Konzertflügel entstanden, der einzigartiges Design mit exquisitem Klang verbindet!
