EN Il Fondamento first saw the light of day in 1989, as the brainchild of the oboist Paul Dombrecht . Working from a core of loyal musicians, he built on this ‘foundation’ a generous and transparent orchestral sound, centred on the timbre of his much admired Baroque oboe, with the aim of making the music of the 18th and 19th centuries sound as it did when it was new. Both in Europe and beyond, the ensemble soon came to be regarded as among the leading innovators in the field of historically informed performance practice.

Il Fondamento has now existed for 25 years. To mark this important anniversary, we are bringing together in this box set three acclaimed discs that have already appeared on the Fuga Libera label: the orchestral suites of Johann Sebastian Bach (FUG 580), oboe concertos by Tomaso Albinoni (FUG 554), and overtures for wind and strings by Johann Friedrich Fasch (FUG 502). These warmly praised recordings also illustrate Paul Dombrecht’s tireless pursuit of the aesthetic and sonic ideals of the Baroque era and his continuing interest in both well-known and neglected composers.

FR Formé par le hautboïste Paul Dombrecht, Il Fondamento voit le jour en 1989. S’appuyant sur un noyau de base de musiciens fidèles, Dombrecht développe un son d’orchestre généreux et transparent autour de la couleur de son hautbois baroque, afin de rendre le plus fidèlement possible la musique des 18e et 19 e siècles. En Europe comme ailleurs, l’ensemble se positionne bientôt comme l’un des plus importants dans le domaine des pratiques d’exécution historiques.

Aujourd’hui, Il Fondamento a 25 ans. Afin de célébrer dignement ce jubilé, nous avons réuni dans ce coffret trois enregistrements, parus à l’origine sous le label

DU In 1989 zag Il Fondamento het daglicht, als geesteskind van hoboïst Paul Dombrecht. Paul Dombrecht bouwde op het fundament van een kern trouwe musici een gulle en transparante orkestklank uit, rondom de kleur van zijn gelauwerde barokhobo, met als doel om de muziek uit de 18de en 19 de eeuw te doen klinken zoals ze in haar tijd klonk. Zowel in Europa als daarbuiten werd het ensemble als snel beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste vernieuwers op het vlak van de historische uitvoeringspraktijk.

Ondertussen bestaat Il Fondamento 25 jaar. Om dit jubileum kracht bij te zetten bundelen we in deze verzamelbox drie fel gelauwerde opnames die eerder verschenen op het label Fuga Libera: de orkestsuites van Johann Sebastian Bach (FUG 580), hoboconcerti van Tomaso Albinoni (FUG 554), en ouvertures voor blazers en strijkers van Johann Friedrich Fasch (FUG 502). THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THE FOUR ORCHESTRAL SUITES

BY JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH With his four orchestral suites (BWV 1066-1069), Johann Sebastian Bach left, when all is said and done, a fairly modest contribution to a genre that, in his day and particularly in the Germanic lands, was especially popular: he was quite unlike the prolific Georg Philipp Telemann, of whom more than 130 orchestral suites have survived (and this no doubt represents only a part of his legacy in the genre). The suite was especially indebted to the French taste that dominated the German scene at the time, together with Italian influence. It effected a successful synthesis of the two influences, in a ‘gemischter Geschmack’, a blending of tastes that fitted French overtures and dances to the concertante principle of the Italians. The woodwind especially were frequently given roles as soloists: the distinctive French woodwind trio (two oboes and bassoon) was given prominence, following the model of the Italian concerto. It is however the strings, reinforced if necessary by the woodwind, that form the most commonly found grouping. At times, the trumpets and the timpani lend this music of refined pleasure a more solemn character. It is in this form – further enriched by two oboes in the Third – that the last two of Bach’s four orchestral suites have become familiar.

Recent musicological research has, however, shown that the parts for trumpet, timpani and oboe were later additions, and that the original versions did not include these. The original version of the 3rd Suite, for strings and continuo bass, can be

Bach’s suites are sublime examples of the genre. They start with a French overture of vast proportions that in each case constitutes the most elaborate part of the suite from a compositional point of view – and from this comes the fact that the suites are sometimes called ‘overtures’ or ‘overture suites’. This is followed by a group of dances or dance-like movements and other ‘galantries’ in which Bach’s

dated to 1716, when Bach was attached to the court of Weimar. The 4th Suite, for three oboes, bassoon, strings and continuo bass, was written in Cöthen in 1718.

From 1717 to 1723 Bach was indeed in residence at the court of this city, and had at his disposition an excellent ensemble of instrumental soloists. For later performances in Leipzig (from 1725 on), trumpets and timpani were added, perhaps for solemn out-door occasions. The first two suites also date from Bach’s Cöthen period. The 1st Suite (1719-20) is written for two oboes, a bassoon, strings and continuo bass. No later arrangement of the work is known. By contrast, the case of the 2nd seems particularly interesting. Dating from before this famous and universally familiar Leipzig version (1738/39, for flute, strings and continuo bass), there exists a pre-1722 version from the Cöthen period, doubtless with a solo violin instead of flute. For the flute adaptation the original key of A minor was changed to B minor. And so this recording features the original, highly convincing versions of the four suites for orchestra by Bach. With the solo violin replacing the flute, the 2nd Suite sounds wonderful in A minor. In the 3rd and 4th suites the trumpets and the timpani (as well as the oboes in the 3rd) are absent, and indeed these later additions were not given independent parts. In the expanded Leipzig versions the brass and timpani were present only to ensure, as Schütz had already written with regard to his sacred vocal music – “zur starcker Getön und zur Pracht”, a more powerful sound and added pomp. Just as in Leipzig Bach reworked a number of earlier cantatas in order to suit the performance conditions he was being offered, so he adapted (either he or someone else) three of the four suites to fit new demands.

main concern is to provide abundant variety of metre (binary or ternary), of tempo (from slow to very fast) and, as may be, of instrumental grouping, features that gives each movement its own character. Constant elements include tonality and structure (all the movements are in two parts, each repeated, as is typical of baroque dance). The French overture is also in two parts, though with contrasts of tempo and texture: the first part is a solemn march in binary rhythm, the second fast and fugal.

The slow rhythm of the first part then returns.

The keyboard suite was fixed in a stereotyped form in the second half of the seventeenth century, with the four contrasting classical dances that are the allemande, the courante, the sarabande and the gigue, a vast grouping later often enriched with other traditional dances (such as the minuet, the gavotte, the bourrée, the passepied, etc.). The orchestral suite by contrast followed a much looser model, in which it was the additional dances that often held pride of place. Three of Bach’s orchestral suites contain only one of the four core dances of the keyboard suite: a courante in the 1st, a sarabande in the 2nd, a gigue in the 3rd ; the allemande was reserved for solo instrumental suites. The bourrée is particularly favoured, appearing in each suite, before the gavotte and the minuet (present in three of the four suites). Isolated dances are the forlane, the passepied and the polonaise. Other movements would have a dance character though without the rhythm of a specific dance, the rondeau for example, or the badinerie and the réjouissance. One particular case would be the extremely famous air in the 3rd Suite; it has no connection with the world of dance, much more with the character movements that Telemann in his suites called a ‘plainte’, a kind of instrumental lament. As regards style, Bach’s Air recalls the Italian trio sonata, inspired by Arcangelo Corelli: over a bass ostinato in quavers, the solo violin unfolds an expression lyrical line, accompanied by superb countermelodies on the second violin and the viola. At the heart of a suite that has a markedly French character, this Italianate air clearly stands out, indicating once

Each suite presents further characteristics that deserve notice. In the 1st, four parts contain actually two dances (gavotte, minuet, bourrée and passepied), with the indication ‘alternativement’. This indicates that the first dance is to be repeated after the second. The instrumentation of the second dance regularly varies from that of the first, as in the second bourrée, reserved for the woodwind trio. In this Bach also modifies the general affect by means of a modulation from C major to C minor. In the second passepied Bach contrasts a contrapuntal oboe part with a repeat of the first passepied on the strings: even in the most relaxed and most dance-like movements his love for the academic style comes to the fore! The Sarabande of the 2nd Suite is also pure Bach: the violin and bass perform a two-part canon, a fresh example of the composer’s predilection for contrapuntal procedures. In the second gavotte of the 1st Suite, it is the two oboes that carry the discourse, while the role of the strings is limited to a reprise of a fanfare-like figure. It is possible that Bach is refer-

more the fact that German taste sought a fusion of national styles. The Italian style is again found in the concertante character of the fugal part of the overture. In the 1st Suite, the woodwind trio (two oboes and a bassoon) functions as a concertino. In the 2nd, the violin frequently intervenes as a soloist, not only in the overture but also in the popular ‘Badinerie’ as well as in the ‘double’ of the Polonaise, a variation in which the theme of the Polonaise is transferred to the bass part and wreathed with brilliant figures on the violin. When the 3rd Suite, as in this recording, is performed by strings alone, the violin’s solo part stands out all the more. The Air too is played by the violin, like a slow movement in a solo concerto, as in an interesting version known from a copy by Christian Friedrich Penzel (1737-1801), one of Bach’s last pupils in Leipzig and an enthusiastic copyist of his teacher’s works. The overture in the 4th Suite is particularly remarkable, not only because the woodwind trio is expanded to a quartet (by the addition of a third oboe), but also because this quartet at times doubles the strings, at times acts as a group of soloists.

ring here to an existent fanfare figure. Similar ‘flourishes’ are to be found in the 1st Brandenburg Concerto on the horns, and in the ‘royal’ air Grosser Herr, starker König (with solo trumpet) in the Christmas Oratorio. In royal and aristocratic circles, special events were marked by characteristic flourishes: the arrival of a sovereign, the commencement of a meal, military ceremonial or a hunt. It is not known whether or not Bach, through the fanfare figure in the 1st Suite, was evoking a specific context.

The overture of the 4th Suite, for three oboes, bassoon and strings, had its orchestration expanded by Bach in 1725 with the addition of three trumpets and timpani; he had adapted it as an introductory chorus to the festive cantata for Christmastide Unser Mund sei voll Lachens (BWV 110). In masterly manner he introduces the chorus in the fugal section of the overture. In a probably posthumous copy of the 4th Suite, in the hand of Penzel, Bach’s pupil, the trumpets and timpani are also added in the Bourrée, the Gavotte and in the final Réjouissance. In the second bourrée, we discover a sample of Bach’s musical humour: the three oboes are supported by the bassoon that, in reality, takes over operational control by playing a lyrical, smoothly continuous melodic line. The strings are restricted to a small figure that is constantly repeated at the unison, like a comic commentary on this inverted world in which the oboe, a quintessentially melodic instrument, is in thrall to the bassoon, an instrument generally confined to the role of bass support in the orchestral continuo. What is more, this amusing intermezzo is in B minor, whereas the other movements in the suite are in D major. The following Réjouissance forms a perfect conclusion to such witty music: Bach unsettles the listener by means of constantly changing rhythmic accents. It thus constitutes the ideal polar opposite of the Air, that instrumental lament in the 3rd Suite: as a consummate composer of the late baroque, Bach displays for our admiration a particularly broad palette of affects, in a ceaselessly varied manner that is often also, in this music for relaxation, of great subtlety.

LA VERSION ORIGINALE DES QUATRE SUITES D’ORCHESTRE DE JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH Avec ses quatre suites d’orchestre (BWV 1066-1069), Johann Sebastian Bach a laissé une contribution somme toute assez réduite à un genre qui, à son époque et particulièrement dans les pays germaniques, était particulièrement populaire : on est loin du bien plus prolifique Georg Philipp Telemann, dont on a conservé plus de 130 suites d’orchestre, ce qui ne représente sans doute qu’une partie de son legs dans le genre. La suite devait surtout au goût français qui, alors, en même temps que l’influence italienne, dominait la scène allemande. Elle opérait une synthèse réussie des deux influences, en un « gemischter Geschmack », une réunion de goûts qui assortissait les ouvertures et danses françaises au principe concertant des Italiens. Les bois, surtout, y endossaient fréquemment un rôle de soliste : le trio emblématique de bois français (deux hautbois et basson) était mis au premier plan, à l’inspiration du concerto italien. Ce sont cependant les cordes, renforcées le cas échéant de bois, qui forment l’ensemble le plus courant. Parfois, les trompettes et les timbales viennent donner à cette musique d’un agrément raffiné un caractère plus solennel. C’est sous cette forme – encore enrichie de deux hautbois dans la 3e – que les deux dernières des quatre suites d’orchestre de Bach nous sont devenues familières.

Des recherches musicologiques récentes ont cependant montré que leurs parties de trompettes, de timbales et de hautbois ont été ajoutées ultérieurement, et que

leur version originale n’en comporte pas. La version originale de la 3e Suite, pour cordes et basse continue, peut être située en 1716, quand Bach était lié à la cour de Weimar. La 4e Suite, pour trois hautbois, basson, cordes et basse continue, fut notée à Cöthen en 1718. De 1717 à 1723, Bach séjourna en effet à la cour de cette ville, qui mettait à sa disposition un excellent ensemble de solistes instrumentaux. Pour des exécutions ultérieures à Leipzig (à partir de 1725), des trompettes et timbales furent ajoutées, peut-être pour des exécutions solennelles de plein air.

Les deux premières suites datent également de la période de Cöthen. La 1e Suite (1719-20) est destinée à deux hautbois, un basson, les cordes et la basse continue.

On ne connaît pas d’arrangement ultérieur de l’œuvre. En revanche, le cas de la 2e paraît particulièrement intéressant. Antérieurement à la célèbre version de Leipzig (1738/39, pour flûte traversière, cordes et basse continue), devenue si familière, il existe une version de la période de Cöthen, datant d’avant 1722, sans doute avec un violon solo à la place de la flûte. Pour l’adaptation à la flûte traversière la tonalité originale de la mineur fut transposée en si mineur.

Les suites de Bach sont des exemples sublimes du genre. Elles commencent par une ouverture à la française de vaste ampleur, qui constitue chaque fois la partie de la suite la plus développée sur le plan compositionnel – de là vient que les suites seront parfois dénommées « Ouvertures » ou « ouvertures en suite ». Pour suivre, un ensemble de danses ou de pages d’allure dansante et autres « galanteries », dans lequel Bach veille avant tout à une grande variété sur le plan de la mesure (binaire ou ternaire), du tempo (du lent au très rapide) et, le cas échéant, de l’effectif, ce qui donne à chaque mouvement un caractère propre. Quant aux constantes, ce sont la tonalité et la structure (tous les mouvements sont en deux parties, chacune étant répétée, ce qui est typique de la danse baroque). L’ouverture à la française est en deux parties également, mais avec un contraste de tempo et de texture : la première partie est une marche solennelle en rythme binaire, suivie d’une partie fuguée rapide. Le rythme lent de la première partie revient ensuite.

La suite de clavier se fixa dans une forme de stéréotype dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, avec les quatre danses classiques et contrastées que sont l’allemande, la courante, la sarabande et la gigue, un vaste ensemble plus tard souvent enrichi d’autres danses de caractère populaire (comme le menuet, la gavotte, la bourrée, le passepied, etc.). De son côté, la suite d’orchestre suit un modèle bien plus libre, dans lequel les danses additionnelles jouent souvent le premier rôle. Trois des suites orchestrales de Bach ne contiennent qu’une des quatre danses nucléaires de la suite de clavier : une courante dans la 1e, une sarabande dans la 2e, une gigue dans la 3e ; l’allemande sera réservée aux suites pour instrument solo. La bourrée est particulièrement choyée, intervenant dans chaque suite, devant la gavotte et le menuet (présentes dans trois des quatre suites). Les danses isolées sont la forlane, le passepied et la polonaise. D’autres pages seront de caractère dansant, mais sans rythme de danse spécifique, comme le rondeau, la badinerie et la réjouissance. Un cas particulier sera le célébrissime air de la 3e Suite ; il n’a pas de rapport avec

Chaque suite présente encore quelques caractéristiques qui méritent d’être relevées. Dans la 1e, quatre parties comprennent en réalité deux danses (gavotte, menuet, bourrée et passepied), avec la mention « alternativement ». Ceci indique qu’il faut reprendre la première danse après la seconde. Régulièrement, l’effectif de la seconde danse varie par rapport à la première, comme dans la seconde bourrée,

l’univers de la danse, mais bien plutôt avec les pages de caractère que Telemann, dans ses suites, intitulait « plainte », une sorte de lamento instrumental. Sur le plan stylistique, l’Air de Bach renvoie à la sonate en trio italienne, inspirée d’Arcangelo Corelli : sur une basse obstinée en croches, le violon solo déploie une mélodie expressive, accompagnée de superbes contrechants au second violon et à l’alto. Au sein d’une suite au caractère français accusé, cet air d’allure italienne se démarque nettement, ce qui marque une fois encore le goût typiquement allemand portant à une fusion des styles nationaux. On trouve encore le style italien dans le caractère concertant de la partie fuguée de l’ouverture. Dans la 1e Suite, le trio des bois (deux hautbois et basson) agit en concertino. Dans la 2e, le violon intervient fréquemment en soliste, non seulement dans l’Ouverture mais aussi dans la populaire Badinerie ainsi que dans le « double » de la Polonaise, une variation dans laquelle le thème de la Polonaise se retrouve renvoyé à la partie de basse et enguirlandé d’une brillante partie de figuration au violon. Quand la 3e Suite, comme dans cet enregistrement, est exécutée par les seules cordes, la partie soliste de violon en ressort d’autant plus. L’Air, lui aussi, est joué par le violon, à l’instar d’un mouvement lent de concerto de soliste, comme dans une version intéressante connue par une copie de Christian Friedrich Penzel (1737-1801), un des derniers élèves de Bach à Leipzig et copiste enthousiaste de l’œuvre de son maître. Quant à l’Ouverture de la 4e Suite, elle est particulièrement remarquable, non seulement parce que le trio de bois est élargi au quatuor (par l’adjonction d’un troisième hautbois), mais aussi parce que ce quatuor tantôt double les cordes, tantôt agit en ensemble de solistes.

réservée au trio des bois. Dans celle-ci, Bach modifie également l’affect général par une modulation de do majeur à do mineur. Dans le second passepied, Bach oppose une partie contrapuntique de hautbois à la reprise du premier passepied aux cordes : même dans les pages les plus détendues et les plus dansantes, son amour pour le style savant met le nez à la fenêtre ! La Sarabande de la 2e Suite, elle aussi, est du pur Bach : le violon et la basse exécutent un canon à deux voix, nouvel exemple de la prédilection du compositeur pour les procédés contrapuntiques. Dans la deuxième gavotte de la 1e Suite, les deux hautbois portent le discours ; le rôle des cordes est limité à la reprise d’un motif aux allures de sonnerie de trompette. Bach s’y référait peut-être à un motif de fanfare existant. De semblables « signaux » se retrouvent dans le 1er Concerto brandebourgeois aux cors, et dans l’air « royal » Grosser Herr, starker König (avec trompette solo) de l’Oratorio de Noël.

Dans les cercles royaux et nobles, les événements spéciaux étaient soulignés de sonneries typiques : arrivée d’un souverain, début d’un repas, cérémonial militaire ou partie de chasse. On ignore si Bach, par le motif de fanfare de la 1e Suite, évoquait un contexte spécifique.

L’’Ouverture de la 4e Suite, pour trois hautbois, basson et cordes, vit son effectif élargi par Bach en 1725 par l’adjonction de trois trompettes et de timbales, lorsqu’elle fut adoptée en guise de chœur introductif à la cantate festive pour le temps de Noël Unser Mund sei voll Lachens (BWV 110). D’une manière magistrale, il introduisit le chœur dans la section fuguée de l’ouverture. Dans une copie probablement posthume de la 4e Suite, de la main de Penzel, le disciple de Bach, les trompettes et timbales sont également ajoutées dans la Bourrée, la Gavotte et dans la Réjouissance finale. Dans la deuxième bourrée, nous découvrons un échantillon de l’humour musical de Bach : les trois hautbois sont soutenus par le basson qui, en réalité, prend la direction des opérations en chantant une ligne mélodique d’une parfaite continuité. Les cordes se limitent à un petit motif constamment répété à

l’unisson, comme un commentaire comique à ce monde inversé où le hautbois, instrument mélodique par excellence, se retrouve soumis au basson, généralement confiné un rôle de soutien de basse dans le continuo de l’orchestre. De plus cet intermezzo humoristique est en si mineur, alors que les autres pages de la suite sont en ré majeur. La Réjouissance qui suit forme une parfaite conclusion à cette musique si spirituelle : Bach y déstabilise l’auditeur par des accents rythmiques perpétuellement changeants. Elle constitue ainsi le pôle opposé idéal de l’Air, ce lamento instrumental de la 3e Suite : en parfait compositeur du baroque tardif, Bach nous donne à admirer une palette particulièrement large d’affects, d’une manière sans cesse variée et, dans cette musique de délassement, souvent très subtile.

DE ORIGINELE VERSIE VAN DE VIER ORKESTSUITES VAN JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH Met vier orkestsuites (BWV 1066-1069) leverde J.S. Bach een eerder bescheiden bijdrage tot een genre dat in zijn tijd vooral in het Duitse taalgebied bijzonder populair was. Het meest productief was Georg Philipp Telemann, van wie meer dan 130 orkestsuites bewaard zijn, ongetwijfeld slechts een deel van wat hij componeerde.

De suite is vooral schatplichtig aan de Franse smaak, die toen, samen met de Italiaanse invloed, het Duitse muzikale toneel domineerde. Beide invloeden kwamen in de suite zelfs tot een geslaagde synthese in wat toen doorging als de ‘gemischter Geschmack’: de ouverture en de dansen van Franse makelij werden gefusioneerd met het concerterende principe van de Italianen. Vooral de blaasinstrumenten kregen vaak een solistische rol toebedeeld: het typisch Franse houtblazertrio (twee hobo’s en fagot) komt vaak een bevoorrechte rol toe, geïnspireerd door het Italiaanse concerto. Strijkers, eventueel aangevuld met houtblazers, zijn dan ook de meest typische bezetting. Occasioneel werden trompetten en pauken toegevoegd, die aan deze verfijnde ontspanningsmuziek een feestelijk karakter verleenden.

Zo zijn de derde en de vierde orkestsuite van Bach vooral bekend in deze laatste bezetting, de derde suite bovendien versterkt met twee hobo’s. Recent musicologisch onderzoek heeft echter uitgewezen dat in deze beide suites de partijen voor trompetten, pauken en hobo’s pas later werden toegevoegd en in de oorspronkelijke versie ontbraken. De originele versie van de derde suite, voor strijkers en b.c., is te situeren omstreeks 1716, toen Bach verbonden was aan het hof in Weimar. De

In deze opname worden de zeer overtuigende, originele versies van de vier orkestsuites van Bach voorgesteld. Met vioolsolo, in plaats van traverso, klinkt de tweede suite ideaal in de tonaliteit van la klein. In de derde en de vierde suite zijn de trompetten en de pauken (en in de derde suite ook de hobo’s) geschrapt: als latere toevoeging vertolken ze immers geen zelfstandige partijen. In de aangedikte versies uit de Leipziger jaren dienden de supplementaire blazers en pauken slechts, zoals Heinrich Schütz voor zijn religieuze vocale muziek noteerde, “zur starcker Getön und zur Pracht”: om een groter klankvolume te bekomen en om de uitvoering meer glans te verlenen.

Zoals Bach zelf een aantal vroeger gecomponeerde cantates en concerti later in Leipzig herwerkte in functie van andere uitvoeringsmogelijkheden, zo paste hij (of iemand anders) drie van de vier suites aan nieuwe eisen of wensen aan.

Bachs orkestsuites zijn sublieme voorbeelden van het genre. Zij beginnen met een uitgebreide Franse ouverture, het compositorisch meest uitgewerkte deel van de suite. Vandaar wordt voor de orkestsuite ook soms de term ‘ouverture’ of ‘ouver-

vierde suite, voor 3 hobo’s, fagot, strijkers en b.c., ontstond in Köthen in 1718. Tussen 1717 en 1723 verbleef Bach aan het hof in Köthen, waar hij beschikte over een uitstekend ensemble van solistische instrumentalisten. Voor latere uitvoeringen in Leipzig (vanaf 1725 of later) werden trompetten en pauken toegevoegd, mogelijk voor feestelijke uitvoeringen in openlucht. Ook de eerste en de tweede suite dateren uit de Köthener jaren. De eerste, uit 1719/20, is geschreven voor twee hobo’s, fagot, strijkers en b.c. Aan dit werk werd, voor zover bekend, later niet meer gesleuteld.

Vooral de tweede suite is interessant: aan de overbekende, alom ingeburgerde versie voor strijkers, traverso en b.c., die te situeren is in de jaren 1738/39 in Leipzig, ging een versie uit Köthen vooraf, die dateert van voor 1722, zeer waarschijnlijk met vioolsolo in plaats van traverso. Voor de aanpassing aan de traverso werd de originele tonaliteit van la klein een toon hoger getransponeerd naar si klein.

Daarna volgt een bonte afwisseling aan dansen, dansachtige delen en andere ‘Galanterien’, waarbij vooral gestreefd wordt naar een grote variatie op het vlak van het metrum (binair of ternair) en het tempo (van langzaam tot zeer snel), eventueel de bezetting, waardoor elk deel een eigen karakter heeft. Constante elementen zijn de tonaliteit en de structuur (elk onderdeel is tweedelig, met een herhaling van elk van beide fragmenten, de typische opbouw van de barokdans).

Ook de Franse ouverture is tweeledig, maar wel met een contrast in tempo en textuur: het eerste onderdeel is een statige mars in binaire maat, met aansluitend een fugatisch snel deel. Aan het slot van het fugatische fragment keert het marstempo van het begin terug.

De klaviersuite volgde vanaf de tweede helft van de 17de eeuw een eerder stereotiep patroon met vier klassieke, contrasterende dansen: allemande, courante, sarabande en gigue, een vaste opeenvolging die later vaak werd doorbroken door andere populaire dansen (zoals menuet, gavotte, bourrée, passepied e.a.). De orkestsuite volgt echter een veel grilliger opbouw, waarbij de later toegevoegde dansen vaak de voorkeur genoten. Drie van Bachs orkestsuites bevatten telkens slechts één van de stereotiepe dansen uit de klaviersuite: een courante in nr. 1, een sarabande in nr. 2 en een gigue in nr. 3. De allemande bleef nagenoeg exclusief voorbehouden voor de solistische instrumentale muziek. De bourrée was een van de meest geliefde dansen, want die komt in alle suites voor, gevolgd door de gavotte en het menuet (in drie van de vier suites). Eenmalige dansen zijn de forlane, de passepied en de polonaise.

Andere aan de dans verwante delen, maar zonder een specifiek dansritme zijn het rondeau, de badinerie en de réjouissance. Een speciaal geval is het overbekende air uit de derde suite, die niet verwant is aan de dans, maar eerder aan een karakterstuk dat Telemann in zijn suites vaak betitelt als ‘plainte’, een soort instrumentaal lamento. Stilistisch verwijst Bachs air naar de Italiaanse triosonate, geïnspireerd door Arcangelo Corelli: op een bas in een ononderbroken beweging in achtstenoten

Elke suite vertoont nog enkele bijzonderheden die een aparte vermelding verdienen. In de eerste suite zijn vier dansen verdubbeld (gavotte, menuet, bourrée en passepied), met de aanwijzing ‘alternativement’. Dit betekent dat na de tweede dans de eerste wordt herhaald. Geregeld wisselt de bezetting in de tweede dans, zoals in de tweede bourrée, die gereserveerd is voor het houtblazertrio. In deze tweede bourrée wisselt Bach ook het affectgehalte door de modulatie van do groot naar do klein. In de tweede passepied plaatst Bach een contrapuntische partij in de hobo tegenover de herhaling van de eerste passepied in de strijkers. Zelfs in

ontspint zich in de eerste viool een expressieve melodie, aangevuld met boeiende partijen in de tweede viool en de altviool. Binnen de typisch op de Franse stijl georienteerde suite staat dit Italiaans aandoende air als iets bijzonders, wat weer eens wijst op de typische Duitse tendens tot een fusie van nationale stijlen. Italiaans is tevens de concertante uitwerking van het fugatische gedeelte van de ouverture. In de eerste suite treedt het houtblazertrio, twee hobo’s en fagot, op als concertino.

In de tweede suite komt de viool geregeld als solist op het voorplan, overigens niet alleen in de ouverture, maar vooral ook in de populaire badinerie en in de ‘double’ van de polonaise, een variatie waarbij de voorafgaande polonaisemelodie naar de baspartij wordt verplaatst en omrankt wordt door briljante vioolfiguratie. Wanneer de derde suite, zoals in deze opname, alleen door strijkers wordt uitgevoerd, valt de solistische vioolpartij in de ouverture des te meer op. Ook de air wordt gespeeld met vioolsolo, als een langzame beweging van een vioolconcerto, een interessante versie die bekend is uit een kopie van Christian Friedrich Penzel (1737-1801), een van de laatste leerlingen van Bach in Leipzig en een enthousiaste kopiist van diens werk. De ouverture van de vierde suite is vooral boeiend, niet alleen omdat het houtblazertrio is uitgebreid tot een kwartet (drie hobo’s in plaats van twee, plus fagot), maar ook omdat dit kwartet nu eens solistisch optreedt, dan weer de strijkersgroep verdubbelt.

ontspannende, dansante werken komt zijn voorliefde voor ‘geleerde’ muziek om de hoek kijken! Ook de sarabande van de tweede suite is op-en-top Bach: de viool en de bas voeren een tweestemmige canon uit, alweer een voorbeeld van Bachs voorliefde voor contrapuntische technieken. In de tweede gavotte uit de eerste suite voeren de twee hobo’s het hoge woord. De rol van de unisono spelende strijkers is beperkt tot de herhaling van een signaalachtig trompetmotief. Mogelijk refereerde Bach aan een bestaand fanfaremotief. Gelijkaardige signalen citeert hij in het eerste Brandenburgs concerto in de hoorns en in de ‘koninklijke’ aria Grosser Herr, starker König (met solotrompet) in het Weihnachtsoratorium. In koninklijke en adellijke kringen waren met specifieke gebeurtenissen typisch signalen verbonden, zoals bij de aankomst van een vorst, het begin van een maaltijd, militair ceremonieel en jachtpartijen. Of Bach met het fanfaremotief in de eerste orkestsuite naar een specifieke context verwijst, is niet bekend.

De oorspronkelijke bezetting van de ouverture van de vierde suite, voor drie hobo’s, fagot en strijkers, breidde Bach in 1725 uit met drie trompetten en pauken voor het inleidend koor van de feestelijke cantate voor de Kerstmis Unser Mund sei voll Lachens (BWV 110). Op meesterlijke wijze plantte hij het koor in het fugatische deel van de ouverture in. In een kopie van de vierde suite van de hand van Bachs leerling Penzel, die vermoedelijk dateert van na het overlijden van de componist, zijn de trompetten en de pauken ook toegevoegd in de eerste bourrée, de gavotte en de afsluitende réjouissance. In de tweede bourrée betrappen we Bach op een staaltje muzikale humor. De drie hobo’s worden ondersteund door de fagot, die in feite de leiding neemt met een continu doorlopende melodische lijn. De rol van de strijkers blijft beperkt tot een constant herhaald motiefje in unisono, als een soort komische commentaar op de omgekeerde wereld: de hobo, het melodisch blaasinstrument bij uitstek, is ondergeschikt aan de fagot, binnen het ensemble overwegend een ondersteunend basso continuoinstrument. Voor dit humoristisch intermezzo reserveert

Bach dan ook nog de tonaliteit van si klein (in plaats van re groot van de andere delen). De aanstekelijke rĂŠjouissance is een waardige afsluiter van deze geestrijke muziek. In dit slotdeel zet hij de luisteraar geregeld op het verkeerde been door steeds wisselende ritmische accenten. De rĂŠjouissance de ideale tegenpool van de air, het instrumentale lamento uit de derde suite. Als typische componist uit de late barok bespeelt Bach op een uiterst gevarieerde en in deze ontspanningsmuziek ook vaak op een subtiele manier een bijzonder brede waaier aan affecten.

ALBINONI’S OBOE CONCERTOS, OP. 7 AND 9 1718 saw the appearance of a book that the modern, emancipated woman would happily consign to the dustbin: Les femmes sçavantes ou Bibliothèque des dames.

Under a title derived from Molière, it presents an overview of sciences and books ‘suitable’ for ladies. Although the trifle at first glance testifies to the patriarchal spirit of a bygone age, more documentary value appears to be concealed behind its dated contents than a first reading might lead one to suspect. For its three hundred and fifty pages offer a treasury of information about the whys and wherefores of human knowledge – in the broadest sense – in the late Baroque. Thus, the twentysixth chapter concentrates on the “fine arts to which a Lady might apply herself,” as well as on the artists whose “excellent works” provided such “exceptional pleasure” that no library could be without them. Among the Italian composers we find the renowned and less-renowned names of (Giovanni) Bononcini, (Alessandro) Scarlatti, Pistocchi, Corelli, Vivaldi, Valentini and Alberti, as well as of the man to whose works this recording is devoted: Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671–1750/1).

We have not been able to discover the precise identity of the author of Les femmes sçavantes, who cautiously went through life under the name of ‘Monsieur N.C’; however, we do know quite a lot about his Amsterdam-based publisher, MichelCharles Le Cène, the son-in-law and successor to Estienne Roger (1665–1722), who for his part is considered one of the most celebrated music publishers of the early eighteenth century. Roger, who originated from Caen in France, produced a

The fact that Les femmes sçavantes mentions Albinoni by name appears to be mainly due to Roger and Le Cène’s having already published Albinoni’s compositions since 1712. These included the two groups of Concerti a cinque upon which Paul Dombrecht and Il Fondamento have drawn for this recording. Opus 7 appeared in 1715 in two libri, each containing two concertos for strings (with violino principale), two for two oboes, and two for solo oboe – incidentally, these were the very first Italian oboe concertos ever to come from the printing press. Opus 9, which was conceived in an identical form, appeared seven years later from Le Cène. Yet, did ‘Mr. N.C.’ mention this music simply to please his publisher?

Historical research has elucidated Albinoni’s particular place in the cultural landscape of his age. In contrast to the scores of the more flamboyant violinists Vivaldi, Geminiani, and Tartini, Albinoni’s music appealed more to the tastes of ‘amateurs’ than of professional musicians. In fact, while Opus 7 may have been conceived for the oboist Ignazio Sieber, and Opus 9 for the virtuosi of the Bavarian court orchestra, there are no indications suggesting that Albinoni intended the oboe parts for specific soloists. Though Albinoni was a skilful singer and violinist, he made less of a mark for himself as a professional virtuoso than his compatriot and contemporary, Vivaldi. On the frontispieces of his compositions, for instance, Albinoni invariably described himself as a dilettante veneto (Venetian amateur) or musico di violino (freelance violinist). Thanks to his share in the family business producing playing cards, he was able to play and create music for the sheer love (diletto) of it, without

series of modern-looking copperplates of equally modern-sounding music. The repertoire he and Le Cène so elegantly engraved virtually constitutes an anthology of Italian Baroque music: in addition to Arcangelo Corelli’s legendary Concerti grossi opus 6 (1714), it includes Antonio Vivaldi’s L’estro armonico (1711) and Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’invenzione (1725, with Le Quattro Stagioni).

having to assume a permanent position at a church or court. Nevertheless, Albinoni was awarded prestigious commissions throughout his career, which spanned nearly five decades. Thus, season after season, he composed and conducted drammi per musica at the big public opera houses of Venice. In 1720, his quest for success led him to Munich where his wife, the soprano Margherita Raimondi, was also performing. All the same, Albinoni never travelled any further afield.

In the salons beyond the Alps, by contrast, Albinoni ruled supreme through the printed and manuscript score, both his instrumental works and his (grossly underestimated) cantatas circulating freely within the aristocracy and upper middle class. There is evidence suggesting that his music was particularly appreciated for teaching purposes; none other than Johann Sebastian Bach, for instance, deployed it as material for study and as a source for fugal themes. In the opinion of Johann Joachim Quantz (in Versuch eine Anweisung, die Flöte traversiere zu spielen, 1752), on the other hand, Albinoni was mainly responsible for perfecting the concerto.

In 1824, Grigory Vladimirovich Orlov (in Entwurf einer Geschichte der italienischen Musik) typified Albinoni’s style as somewhat “too serious and dry,” for romantic ears that is, but at the same time as “cultivated, pure and lucid” – in other words, suitable for the aesthetic education of ladies.

However, let us not treat Albinoni’s oboe concertos unjustly by looking mere for the mere qualities of exuberance typically attributed to the Baroque concerto. Instead, the modern listener will derive “exceptional pleasure” from their melodic attractiveness and structural perfection. This is made clear by Opus 7 number 3, whose opening Allegro sounds like a perfectly oiled clockwork. The orchestral passage (ritornello) opening this piece introduces a rhythmically sparkling motif on which, eight bars later, the soloist weaves the first variation, only to fall silent again after a couple of bars and to subsequently embroider on the underlying thematic material.

The oboist and orchestra pass through various modulations, yet never rehearse the opening ritornello note for note, as though the cogs in the machinery are constantly being rearranged.

The Allegro in 6/8 time rounds off the piece as a gallant concerto was expected to do: in a festive, dancing mood. Little motifs in quavers, alternating with wispy semiquavers, evoke the carefree atmosphere of the rococo. Once again, we have the ‘false-start’ formula, with the soloist tossing the ball back into the orchestra’s court after four bars. If we listen carefully, we can hear additional details emerging, such as the particular attention paid to the (traditionally weak) viola part.

Similar features might be distilled from Opus 7 no. 6, were it not for the fact that its middle movement places the soloist more prominently in the foreground and leads him straight to an open, half-cadence, connecting smoothly with the second Allegro.

No. 9 is striking because of its Vivaldian opening Allegro and the mournful Adagio, forming a modulating prelude to the closing Allegro, which in turn features a 28-bar opening ritornello that leads the listener’s metric and harmonic expectations round the garden. To conclude, we have no. 12, whose opening Allegro once again comes in like some ingenious piece of machinery (note, for example, the various ways in which the main theme searches its way through the scale), whose modulating Adagio presents a moment of reflection, and whose closing Allegro constitutes a voluptuous dance (where for once the oboe does have the first word).

The following Adagio (in G minor) clears the stage for the larger gestures or ‘affects’.

As mentioned earlier, Albinoni made a significant contribution to opera, as exemplified here by the vocal quality of the oboe line, weaving languorously in and out of the string texture – with a little imagination, the long, swelling tones might even evoke the voice of a soprano or castrato.

If we are to believe an expert (Michael Talbot in Tomaso Albinoni: the Venetian composer and his world, 1990), the differences between the collections of 1715 and 1722 are apparent only “in matters of detail rather than substance”. We are less inclined to take these words for granted since, as Professor Talbot himself suggests, the concertos in Opus 9 not only prove more elaborate in structure, but also speak a more ‘cosmopolitan’ language. Perhaps this has to do with the distinguished circumstances of this collection: while Opus 7 was dedicated to Giovanni Donato Correggio (1698–1738), a Venetian member of the Accademia Filarmonica, the titlepage of Opus 9 celebrated a royal personage – Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria (1662–1726).

Max Emanuel, as he was often called, was Kurfürst [Elector] in the Wittelsbacher dynasty and one of the protagonists in the labyrinthine War of the Spanish Succession (1701–14). He also figures in Belgian history as the last governor of the Spanish Netherlands – among other things, the Grand’ Place (1695) and first Théâtre de la Monnaie (1700) in Brussels were constructed during his governorship (1692–1704).

But Albinoni’s Opus 9 (1722) of course dates from the Elector’s latter years of his life, when he endeavoured to put Munich on the European cultural map. Was it this pretentious cultural policy that led Albinoni to adopt a more international style?

Whatever the case, the Concerti a cinque op. 9 are undoubtedly more ambitious in scope, with longer passages for both orchestra and soloist – note, for example, the ten bars of semiquavers in the second Allegro of No. 5. For the first time, moreover, there are two concertos (nos. 2 and 8) in minor keys, while French influences are heard in the gavotte-like Allegro e non Presto of no. 2, with its dotted rhythms and tirades. The Adagio of the same concerto contrasts that Lullian stateliness with Handelian pathos in the guise of an irresistible oboe melody, floating above a repetitive accompaniment in semiquavers (first violin) and quavers (other strings). The

concluding Allegro resorts to imitations, but did not prevent Albinoni from rehearsing the ‘false-start’ formula.

Whether or not the two collections can be distinguished from each other in terms of ‘details’ rather than ‘substantial elements’ is a matter we are happy to leave open to debate. As a whole, the 1722 collection constitutes a full-blown complement to – rather than variation on – the volume of 1715, regardless of whether Albinoni was taking a ‘progressive step’ or not. After all, Albinoni’s contemporaries, including the femmes sçavantes, consumed new music at such a breakneck speed that evolutionary concerns completely passed them by; rather, they must have been more concerned about the fact that Albinoni’s latest publication was not yet in their Bibliothèque curieuse.

LES CONCERTOS POUR HAUTBOIS OP. 7 ET OP. 9 D’ALBINONI En 1718, à Amsterdam, paraissait un petit ouvrage que la femme émancipée d’aujourd’hui s’empresserait d’enfouir dans une armoire : Les femmes sçavantes ou Bibliothèque des dames qui traite des sciences qui conviennent aux dames, de la conduite de leurs études, des livres qu’elles peuvent lire et l’histoire de celles qui ont excellé dans les sciences. Sous ce titre, qui doit bien sûr à Molière, on trouve un éventail des savoirs et des livres qui étaient censés convenir au sexe faible d’alors.

Dans ce joyau de conformisme patriarcal, on trouve plus d’informations documentaires utiles qu’on ne pourrait le penser au premier abord. De ces quelque 350 pages émane finalement une image assez précise de l’état des connaissances humaines à la fin de l’époque contemporaine. Ainsi, le chapitre 26 est consacré aux « beauxarts, auxquels une Dame peut se consacrer », et aux artistes donc « les œuvres excellentes » procurent « un plaisir [si] vif » qu’elles ne peuvent manquer dans aucune bibliothèque. Parmi les compositeurs italiens mentionnés, on trouve les noms, inégalement fameux, de (Giovanni) Bononcini, (Alessandro) Scarlatti, Pistocchi, Corelli, Vivaldi, Valentini, Alberti, ainsi que celui de Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671-1750/1), à qui cet enregistrement est consacré.

On ne s’étonnera pas, a priori, de trouver Albinoni cité dans Les femmes sçavantes si l’on sait que Roger et Le Cène publièrent des œuvres de notre compositeur dès 1712. Les deux recueils de Concerti a cinque dans lesquels ont puisé Paul Dombrecht et Il Fondamento ne font pas exception. L’opus 7 parut en 1715 ; en ces deux livres paraissent côte à côte deux concerti à cordes avec violon solo, deux pour deux hautbois et deux pour un hautbois solo – il s’agit, notons-le, des derniers concertos pour hautbois à être imprimés à l’époque. L’opus 9, qui est identique dans la conception, parut sept ans plus tard chez Le Cène. Mais la question demeure: est-ce seulement pour faire plaisir à son éditeur que “Monsieur N.C.” fait allusion à cette musique dans son ouvrage ?

La recherche historique nous vient en aide, et montre qu’Albinoni occupait une place particulière dans le paysage musical contemporain. En contraste avec la flamboyance de Vivaldi, Geminiani et Tartini, il correspondait davantage au goût des amateurs qu’à celui des solistes professionnels. Bien que l’opus 7 fût apparemment joué par le hautboïste Ignazio Sieber et l’opus 9 par les virtuoses de la Chapelle royale de Bavière, il ne semble pas qu’Albinoni ait conçu ses parties solistes pour des personnalités bien définies. Excellent chanteur et violoniste lui-même, Albinoni n’avait cependant pas une réputation de virtuose comparable à celle de son contemporain et concitoyen Vivaldi. Sur les frontispices de ses partitions, il se

siècle, Estienne Roger (1665-1722). Originaire de Caen, Roger a édité à Amsterdam une abondante collection de musique moderne, en appliquant les techniques de chalcographie les plus avancées. Le répertoire qu’il a si élégamment gravé, avec Le Cène, est un florilège du Baroque italien: à côté des légendaires Concerti grossi opus 6 d’Arcangelo Corelli (1714), on rencontre par exemple L’Estro armonico (1711) et Il Cimento dell’armonia e dell’invenzione (1725, incluant les Quattro stagioni) d’Antonio Vivaldi.

décrit invariablement comme dilettante veneto (vénitien) de musico di violino. Grâce à ses actions dans une entreprise de cartes à jouer familiale, il pouvait se permettre de pratiquer la musique en amateur et de jouer par dilection, sans devoir rendre des comptes à une quelconque église ou chapelle. Cependant, cela n’empêcha pas sa carrière, longue de près de cinquante ans, d’être émaillée de commandes prestigieuses. Ainsi, il composa et dirigea, saison après saison, des drammi per musica pour les grandes maisons d’opéra publiques à Venise. En 1720, sa carrière l’amena à Munich où se produisait son épouse, la soprano Margherita Raimondi. Mais il ne voyagea guère davantage. À l’inverse, dans les salons transalpins, Albinoni régnait en maître, que ce soit par sa musique imprimée ou par les copies manuscrites qu’on en faisait en nombre. Ainsi, tant ses œuvres instrumentales que ses cantates (bien trop négligées) circulaient dans les maisons des grands bourgeois et des aristocrates. En outre, de nombreux éléments indiquent que sa musique était particulièrement goûtée pour ses vertus pédagogiques. Johann Sebastian Bach lui-même n’hésitait pas à ériger ses compositions en paradigmes, et à y puiser force sujets de fugue. D’après Johann Joachim Quantz (Versuch eine Anweisung, die Flöte traversiere zu spielen, 1752), c’était à Albinoni qu’on devait le perfectionnement du concerto. En 1824, Grigorïĭ Vladimïrovich Orlov dans son essai sur la musique italienne (Entwurf einer Geschichte der italienischen Musik) estimait certes que le style d’Albinoni était trop monolithique, “sérieux et sec” pour plaire aux oreilles romantiques, mais il le qualifiait aussitôt de « savant, pur et correct » – en d’autres mots, parfaitement adapté à l’éducation esthétique des dames.

Ne cherchons donc pas purement et simplement, dans les concertos pour hautbois d’Albinoni, l’exubérance que l’on prête généralement aux concertos baroques. Il s’agit plutôt de se laisser charmer par leur attrait mélodique ainsi que par leur accomplissement formel qui peut donner à l’auditeur moderne, c’est vrai, un « vif plaisir ».

Les mêmes caractéristiques pourraient être mises en avant dans l’opus 7 n°6, si ce n’est que le mouvement central place le soliste plus résolument sur l’avant-scène et lui confie une cadence ouverte qui fait le lien rapide avec le second Allegro.

Quant au n°9, il plaira par son allegro initial très vivaldien et son émouvant adagio, qui forme un prélude modulant à l’allegro final. Celui-ci comprend un retour de la ritournelle initiale dont les vingt-huit mesures apportent un lot très bienvenu de surprises harmoniques et rythmiques. Enfin, le n°12, dont l’allegro initial s’impose par son côté mécaniste, où le thème principal parcourt le cycle des tonalités, com-

Ceci est illustré par l’op. 7, dont le premier allegro du concerto n°3 sonne comme une petite mécanique parfaitement huilée. La ritournelle orchestrale qui l’ouvre présente un motif rythmiquement brillant sur lequel le soliste, huit mesures plus tard, entame une première variation pour reprendre très rapidement son mutisme, puis intervenir à nouveau sur un matériel thématique qui, entre-temps, s’est enrichi.

Et c’est dans des voyages modulatoires, sans jamais de répétition littérale, que hautbois et orchestre reprennent la ritournelle initiale : celle-ci apparaît, dès lors, chaque fois, comme un nouveau rouage. L’adagio qui suit (en sol mineur) nous transporte dans l’univers des affects. Comme on l’a dit plus haut, Albinoni a apporté une contribution significative au “dramma per musica”, ce dont témoigne éloquemment la qualité vocale de la partie de hautbois qui s’enroule langoureusement autour de l’accompagnement des cordes. Avec un peu d’imagination, les sonorités soutenues, insinuantes du hautbois pourraient s’échapper du gosier d’une soprano ou d’un castrat… L’allegro en 6/8 clôt l’œuvre en la faisant revenir à ce que l’on attend d’un concerto du XVIIIe siècle : une humeur festive et dansante. De petits motifs de doubles croches variées de triples croches fuyantes évoquent l’insouciance du Rococo. De nouveau, on note une sorte de « faux départ », pendant lequel le soliste renvoie la balle à l’orchestre à peine arrivé à la quatrième mesure. Une écoute attentive apportera d’autres détails comme le soin, exceptionnel pour l’époque, apporté à la partie d’alto de l’orchestre.

Si nous en croyons Michael Talbot (Tomaso Albinoni : the Venetian Composer and his World, 1990) les différences entre les deux recueils de 1715 et 1722 résident « dans le détail plutôt quand dans la substance ». Nous ne le suivons pas tout à fait dans cette analyse. Comme Talbot le relève lui-même, les concertos de l’opus 9 sont non seulement destinés à un ensemble plus large, mais ils sont encore d’allure plus « cosmopolite », en rapport, peut-être avec le commanditaire du recueil : si l’opus 7 avait été dédié à un membre vénitien de l’Accademia Filarmonica, Giovanni Donata Corregio (1698-1738), l’opus 9 voit son frontispice orné d’un personnage à l’allure royale, celui de Maximilien II Emmanuel de Bavière (1662-1726).

Max Emmanuel, comme on le nommera souvent, est resté dans l’histoire à la fois pour l’important rôle politique qu’il tint dans la lignée des Wittelsbach et pour sa participation à la très complexe guerre de succession d’Espagne (1701-1714). Il a également laissé une trace dans l’histoire de Belgique comme dernier gouverneur des Pays-Bas espagnols : c’est pendant son mandat (1692-1704) notamment que fut reconstruite la Grand-Place de Bruxelles (1695) et qu’y fut inauguré le premier théâtre de la Monnaie (1700). L’opus 9 d’Albinoni (1722) date de la fin de la vie de l’Électeur, à l’époque où il consacrait tout son prestige à faire de Munich une grande ville de culture européenne. Étaient-ce les contours de cette politique culturelle qui poussèrent le compositeur à donner un tour plus international à son nouveau recueil ?

Quoi qu’il en soit, ces Concerti a cinque, plus ambitieux par l’effectif, se caractérisent aussi par des interventions plus longues, du côté de l’orchestre comme du soliste – en témoignent les dix mesures de doubles croches dans le second allegro

Alors, sont-ce des « détails » ou des « éléments substantiels » qui différencient les deux recueils ? Nous choisirons la voie médiane. De toute façon, même en mettant de côté la question de progrès ou non de l’un à l’autre, le recueil de 1722 apporte un complément bienvenu, plutôt qu’une redite, à celui de 1715. Les contemporains d’Albinoni, y compris les femmes sçavantes, consommateurs invétérés de nouvelle musique, ont dû bien davantage se soucier du fait que la publication la plus récente de sa musique ne manquât pas à leur Bibliothèque curieuse…

Pour la première fois, deux concertos (n°6 et n°8) sont en mode mineur, et des accents nouveaux viennent attirer l’Allegro e non Presto du concerto n°2 vers la gavotte française, avec des rythmes pointées et des tirades de triples croches. L’adagio du même concerto oppose à cette pompe lulliste le pathos haendélien qui se déploie par une extraordinaire mélodie confiée au hautbois sur fond d’un accompagnement régulier en doubles croches (premier violon) et croches (les autres cordes). Albinoni nourrit l’allegro final d’imitations, non sans revenir une nouvelle fois à son habitude de « faux départ ».

ALBINONI’S HOBOCONCERTI OPUS 7 EN 9 In 1718 verscheen in Amsterdam een boekje dat de moderne, geëmancipeerde vrouw gerust de kast in mag jagen: Les femmes sçavantes ou Bibliothèque des dames qui traite des sciences qui conviennent aux dames, de la conduite de leurs études, des livres qu’elle peuvent lire et l’histoire de celles qui ont excellé dans les sciences. Onder een aan Molière ontleende hoofdtitel presenteert het een overzicht van wetenschappen en boeken die als ‘gepast’ golden voor dames. Hoewel het gedateerde kleinood in de eerste plaats getuigt van de patriarchale geest van weleer, schuilt er meer documentaire waarde achter zijn inhoud dan men bij eerste lezing zou vermoeden. Doorheen de om en beide driehonderdvijftig bladzijden biedt het immers een schat aan informatie over het hoe en waarom van brede humane kennis in de laatbarokke omgang. Zo besteedt het zesentwintigste hoofdstuk uitgebreid aandacht aan de “schone Kunsten, waaraan een Dame zich kan wijden”, en aan de kunstenaars wier “excellente werken” zo’n “uitzonderlijk plezier” verschaften dat ze in geen enkele bibliotheek mochten ontbreken. Onder de Italiaanse componisten vinden we de ronkende en minder ronkende namen van (Giovanni) Bononcini, (Alessandro) Scarlatti, Pistocchi, Corelli, Vivaldi, Valentini, Alberti, alsook van de man aan wiens œuvre deze cd is gewijd: Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671-1750/1).

De precieze identiteit van de auteur van Les femmes sçavantes, die voorzichtigheidshalve als ‘Monsieur N.C.’ door het leven ging, konden we helaas niet aan de oppervlakte brengen. Wel weten we het één en ander over zijn uitgever, Michel

Dat Les femmes sçavantes tevens Albinoni bij naam noemt, is in de eerste plaats te wijten aan het feit dat Roger en Le Cène al vanaf 1712 Albinoni’s composities publiceerden. De twee bundels Concerti a cinque waaruit Paul Dombrecht en Il Fondamento hebben geput, vormen hierop geen uitzondering. Opus 7 verscheen in 1715 in twee libri van telkens twee concerti voor strijkers (met violino principale), twee voor twee hobo’s en twee voor solohobo – meteen zijn het de allereerste Italiaanse hoboconcerti die ooit van een drukpers rolden. Opus 9, dat in een identieke vorm werd geconcipieerd, verscheen zeven jaar later bij Le Cène. Maar was het enkel om zijn uitgever te plezieren dat ‘mijnheer N.C.’ gewag maakte van deze muziek?

Historisch onderzoek leert dat Albinoni een bijzondere plaats innam in het toenmalige muzieklandschap. In tegenstelling tot de meer flamboyante violisten Vivaldi, Geminiani en Tartini viel hij bijvoorbeeld meer in de smaak bij liefhebbers dan bij beroepssolisten. Hoewel het Opus 7 mogelijk de hoboïst Ignazio Sieber diende, en het Opus 9 de virtuozen van de Beierse hofkapel, wijst niets erop dat Albinoni de hobopartijen voor specifieke solisten bestemde. Zelf mocht Albinoni een vakkundig zanger en violist geweest zijn, toch profileerde hij zich minder uitgesproken als beroepsmatig virtuoos dan zijn stads- en tijdsgenoot Vivaldi. Op de titelbladen van zijn composities beschreef hij zichzelf onveranderlijk als dilettante veneto (‘Vene-

Dankzij zijn aandeel in een familiaal bedrijf dat speelkaarten produceerde, kon hij het zich permitteren uit liefhebberij of diletto te musiceren, zonder vaste betrekking aan te nemen aan een kerk- of hofkapel. Wat niet wegneemt dat zijn bijna vijf decenniadurende carrière door prestigieuze opdrachten wordt gekenmerkt. Zo componeerde en dirigeerde hij seizoen na seizoen drammi per musica voor de grote, publieke operahuizen van Venetië. In 1720 leidde zijn queeste naar succes hem tot in München, waar ook zijn echtgenote, de sopraan Margherita Raimondi, optrad. Verder dan dat is Albinoni evenwel nooit geraakt.

Maar in de huiskamers boven de Alpen regeerde Albinoni als vorst, zij het via het gedrukte of handgekopieerde notenschrift. Zowel zijn instrumentale werken als zijn (fel onderschatte) cantates circuleerden vlotjes in de salons van de aristocratie en hoge burgerij. Nogal wat elementen wijzen erop dat zijn muziek om pedagogische redenen werd gesmaakt. Niemand minder dan Johann Sebastian Bach gebruikte haar bijvoorbeeld als lesmateriaal en als bron voor fugathema’s. Volgens Johann Joachim Quantz (in Versuch eine Anweisung, die Flöte traversiere zu spielen, 1752) mocht Albinoni dan weer de perfectionering van het concerto tot zijn merites rekenen. En in 1824 typeerde Grigorïĭ Vladimïrovich Orlov (in Entwurf einer Geschichte der italienischen Musik) Albinoni’s stijl als enigszins te “ernstig en droog” voor romantische oren, maar tegelijkertijd als “geleerd, zuiver en zindelijk” – met andere woorden, als geschikt voor de esthetische opvoeding van dames.

Laten we Albinoni’s hoboconcerti echter niet stiefmoederlijk behandelen door hun kwaliteiten louter te zoeken op het exuberante, waarop het barokke concerto doorgaans getaxeerd wordt. In plaats daarvan zullen hun melodieuze aantrekkingskracht en structurele volmaaktheid de moderne luisteraar “uitzonderlijk plezier” verschaffen. Dit wordt verduidelijkt door het Opus 7, waarvan het eerste Allegro van

het nummer 3 alvast klinkt als een perfect geolied mechaniekje. De orkestrale passage (ritornello) waarmee het inzet, presenteert een ritmisch sprankelend motto waarop de solist acht maten later een eerste variatie waagt, om na een tweetal maten opnieuw te zwijgen en pas verderop voort te spinnen op het aangereikte thematische materiaal. Al modulerend hernemen hoboïst en orkest nooit letterlijk het openingsritornello, alsof het raderwerk telkens herschikt wordt.

Het Allegro in 6/8 rondt het geheel dan weer af zoals van een achttiende-eeuws concerto wordt verwacht: in feestelijke, dansante stemming. Motiefjes in achtste noten, afgewisseld met slierten zestiende noten, evoceren de zorgeloosheid van het rococo. Opnieuw is er de ‘valse start’-formule, waarbij de solist al na vier maten de bal terug in het orkestrale kamp gooit. Bij aandachtige beluistering komen extra details naar boven drijven, zoals de uitzonderlijke zorg die aan de – traditioneel zwakke – altvioolpartij werd besteed.

Zowat dezelfde kenmerken zouden uit het Opus 7 nummer 6 gedistilleerd kunnen worden, ware het niet dat de middenbeweging hiervan de solist prominenter op het voorplan plaatst en op een open, halve cadens afstevent die vlot de verbinding maakt met het tweede Allegro. Het nummer 9 valt op omwille van zijn Vivaldiaanse openingsallegro en beklemmende Adagio, dat een modulerende prelude vormt op het slotallegro, dat op zijn beurt een achtentwintig maten-tellend openingsritor-

Het daaropvolgende Adagio (in sol klein) maakt tijd voor de grotere gebaren of ‘affecten’. Zoals hoger vermeld, leverde Albinoni een significante bijdrage tot het dramma per musica, wat hier bevestigd wordt door de vocale kwaliteit van de hobolijn. Smachtend kronkelt deze zich doorheen het strijkerweefsel. Met een beetje verbeelding lijken de lange, zwellende tonen zo ontsnapt uit de keel van een sopraan of sopraancastraat.

Ten slotte is er het nummer 12, waarvan het eerste Allegro zich wederom als vernuftig raderwerk aandient (getuige hiervan de manier waarop het hoofdthema op verschillende manieren zijn weg zoekt doorheen de toonladder), het modulerende Adagio als bezinningsmoment, en het afsluitende Allegro als wulpse dans (waarin de hobo voor deze keer wél het eerste woord heeft).

Als we Michael Talbot mogen geloven (in Tomaso Albinoni: the Venetian composer and his world, 1990) doen de verschillen tussen de bundels van 1715 en 1722 zich slechts voor “in matters of detail rather than substance”. Wij zijn het daar niet helemaal mee eens. Want, zoals Professor Talbot zelf suggereert, zijn de concerti in Opus 9 niet alleen een stuk uitgebreider qua opzet, ook spreken ze een meer ‘kosmopolitische’ taal. Misschien heeft dit te maken met de eervolle toedracht van deze bundel: terwijl het Opus 7 opgedragen was aan een Venetiaanse lid van de Accademia Filarmonica, Giovanni Donato Correggio (1698-1738), vierde het titelblad van Opus 9 een personage van koninklijke allure, Maximiliaan II Emanuel van Beieren (1662-1726).

Max Emanuel, zoals hij vaak wordt genoemd, heeft niet alleen historisch belang als Kurfürst in de Wittelsbacher dynastie en als strijdende partij in de complexe Spaanse Opvolgingsoorloog (1701-14), ook figureert hij in de Belgische geschiedenis als laatste landvoogd van de Spaanse Nederlanden – tijdens zijn gouverneurschap (1692-1704) werden onder meer de Grote Markt in Brussel heropgebouwd (1695) en de eerste Muntschouwburg geopend (1700). Albinoni’s Opus 9 (1722) dateert evenwel uit de laatste jaren van zijn leven, toen de Keurvorst er in de eerste plaats een erezaak van maakte München op de Europese culturele kaart te zetten.

Was het deze kunstpolitiek die Albinoni ertoe dreef een internationalere stijl aan te meten?

Of het nu ‘details’ al dan niet ‘substantiële elementen’ zijn die de twee bundels van elkaar onderscheiden, laten we graag in het midden. Hoe dan ook vormt de collectie van 1722 een complement op – eerder dan herneming van – de verzameling van 1715, wars van het feit of Albinoni er een ‘progressieve stap’ mee zette of niet. Zijn tijdgenoten, inclusief de femmes sçavantes, die nieuwe muziek aan zo’n halsbrekend tempo consumeerden dat evolutionaire beslommeringen compleet aan hen voorbij gingen, zullen zich eerder zorgen gemaakt hebben over het feit dat Albinoni’s nieuwste publicatie nog aan hun Bibliothèque Curieuse ontbrak…

Hoe dan ook is deze bundel Concerti a cinque ambitieuzer qua opzet, met langere periodes voor zowel het orkest als de solist – getuige hiervan de tien maten zestiende noten in het tweede Allegro van nummer 5. Voor het eerst staan twee concerti (nummers 2 en 8) in mineurtoonaarden, en worden er – in het naar gavotte neigende Allegro e non Presto van nummer 2 – Franse accenten bovengehaald in de vorm van gepunteerde ritmes en tirades van tweeëndertigste noten. Het Adagio van hetzelfde concerto contrasteert die Lulliaanse statigheid met Händeliaans pathos in de gedaante van een onweerstaanbare hobomelodie zwevend bovenop een repetitieve begeleiding in zestiende (eerste viool) en achtste noten (overige strijkers).

Het slotallegro zette Albinoni in met imitaties, wat hem niet belette op zijn ‘valse start’-formule terug te keren.

Johann Friedrich Fasch’s name is usually associated with the castle of Zerbst, where over several decades he developed the modest Concert-Stube into one of the finest Prussian chapels. After his death his music soon became little more than a vague memory, a fait divers in the margin of a musical era that was dominated by Bach and Handel.

However, it would be foolish to write Fasch off as simply an insignificant German kapellmeister from the end of the Baroque period. His autobiography not only offers us a shining portrait of the musician and his career, but also contains a wealth of information that allows us a better understanding of Fasch’s overtures. In his Lebensläuffe (1757) the old master looks back on a rich life in the musical world. He describes with pride how in Weissenfels, as a twelve-year-old blessed with a beautiful soprano voice, he was discovered by Krieger. He arrived in Leipzig one year later in the charge of Kuhnau, the cantor of the Thomasschule. It was here that he met Telemann, who taught him the basics of music and lent him his scores. In 1708, while studying law at Leipzig university, he founded a collegium musicum with his fellow students. Featuring virtuosos such as Heinichen and Pisendel, this ensemble soon became a serious rival to Kuhnau’s school orchestra.

By 1711 Fasch had become such a celebrity that he was invited by the Duke of Saxe-Zetiz to compose operas for Naumburg. After that he made a tour through the

However, through following the fate of Fasch’s overtures, it can be seen that the composer’s career continued to flourish outside Zerbst even after 1722. Although none of these pieces were published during his lifetime, they were certainly performed in a number of different places. The autograph of the Overture in d-major (FWV K:d 4) for instance, has been kept in the Hessische landes-und Hochschulbibliothek in Darmstadt. The same collection also contains single parts in the handwriting of Christoph Graupner (1683-1760), who probably commissioned Fasch to compose the piece. Fasch’s music can also be found in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek. This library contains the parts for the Overtures in g-minor (FWV K : g 2) and G-major (FWV K : G 15), which were copied under the supervision of Johann Georg Pisendel (1687-1755), a former member of Fasch’s collegium in Leipzig and later konzertmeister in Dresden.

During his time in Zerbst, Fasch was still evidently delivering scores to the various centres of German music. We may well ask ourselves the reasons for the popularity of his overtures. The key to these works resides in Fasch’s very personal handling of French and Italian influences from which he managed, in the manner of Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), to develop a style all of his own. Both Telemann and Fasch borrowed the structure of the opening section – the overture as such - from Jean-Baptiste Lully’s (1632-1687) tragédie lyrique. The introduction is typically slow and majestic, employing dotted rhythms and an alla breve metre. It is followed by a hurried fugato and ends in a reprise of the introduction. Now and then Fasch

German musical world in order to study further and perfect his skills. In Darmstadt he enjoyed free composition lessons with Graupner over a period of fourteen weeks.

A mature musician, he held functions in Gera, Greiz and Prague, where he was in the service of the Duke Morzin, the future commissioner of Vivaldi’s Quattro Stagioni (1725) and protector of Joseph Haydn (1759). His wanderings ended in 1722 when he accepted the demanding post of kapellmeister at the Lutheran court of Zerbst.

diverges from this pattern, for instance in the Overture in d-minor (ca. 1730-1740) where he interrupts the middle of the fugato in order to revert back to the introductory material.

The suite of dances (bourrée, gavotte, menuet) and character pieces in binary form with repeats also show the influence of French music upon Fasch. Some titles evoke playful or theatrical scenes, such as the gamboling gardeners (Jardiniers).

Listeners may certainly notice several similarities to Lully’s or François Couperin’s ballet divertissements. Yet Fasch was by no means merely an imitator of Lully.

His compositions for the Saxon court chapel, like the Overtures in g-minor and G-major (both ca. 1740) exhibit many Italian influences. During this period the Dresden chapel regularly received Southern-European masters such as the Venetians Vivaldi and Albinoni. Moreover, Dresden was at that time an epicentre of the mania for Italian opera. This was mainly due to the presence of Johann Adolf Hasse (16991783), who had been educated in Naples and had been residing in Dresden since 1731. The influence of Italian opera upon Fasch is apparent in his inclusion of two or three da-capo arias in each overture.

A careful listener will notice certain striking characteristics in Fasch’s overtures that could be considered original or even «avant-garde». It was Hugo Riemann who in 1900 first discovered this by comparing fourteen of Fasch’s overtures to similar compositions by Telemann, Fux, Heinichen and other late-Baroque masters. Reimann considered Fasch to be one of Bach’s most accomplished contemporaries.

Although Riemann’s comments were made during a period where knowledge about eighteenth-century music history was limited, his statement was far from unfounded. The Overture in g-minor provides a clear illustration of this. In the intro-

Fasch was familiar with ideas of symphonic dialogue as well. In the first Aria (Largo) from the same overture, the winds and the strings exchange themes. Without any strict contrapuntal scheme, the instrumental forces regroup continuously: firstly all the strings having the floor, then the oboes. The bassoon, detaching itself from it’s traditional role of doubling the bass part, participates in the orchestral activity as an independent voice.

Other features of the Overture in g-minor are its dynamic contrasts and detailed articulation. The Dresden orchestra was famous for its accurate performances and the virtuosity of its players, among whom were the violinist Pisendel, the oboist Johann Christoph Richter and the double bass player Jan Dismas Zelenka. The quality of the players was of such a level that Vivaldi, Heinichen, and also Fasch liked to dedicate concerti con molti stromenti (concertos with several soloists) to them. The concertante orchestral playing is just as evident in the overtures, as can be seen by the many solo passages in Fasch’s Overture in g-minor. This particular score is also demanding in terms of its dynamics. In the third movement (Jardiniers) Fasch alternates between forte and piano dynamics and at the beginning of the second aria (Allegro) the oboes create an echo-effect by playing the same motif

duction, the three oboes assume an active role in relation to the strings. In contrast to Bach’s style of orchestration, the texture here is not truly polyphonic despite the imitation in the oboe parts in the fugato section. With the entrance of the strings the idiomatic nature of Fasch’s music becomes apparent, particularly in the writing for oboe, where the technical and timbre possibilities of the instrument have been carefully considered. Whereas the violins mainly provide rhythmic movement, the oboes create an orchestral palette that, for this period, is quite nuanced and varied.

There are brilliant passages in the score where the oboes, used to play blocks of harmony, are set against the turbulent strings.

The fact that the orchestra strictly observed these kind of details is apparent in the many parts written in Pisendel’s handwriting or containing his corrections. Where necessary, the konzertmeister added extra indications, such as bowing or phrasing signs, in order to further refine the orchestral expressivity.

Musicological research into the Fasch heritage has undergone a considerable revival over the last twenty years. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, many former D.D.R. libraries became accessible to western scholars, and East-German studies on Fasch became available. To date, 87 overtures have been attributed to him.

However, many questions concerning dates and stylistic development still remain unanswered. We can only endeavour to work out the chronology of the three overtures through an analysis of their respective styles.

The Overture in d-minor is probably the oldest. From a compositional point of view, it seems closest in style to the late Baroque. This is most evident in the Overture and the Fugue, the latter of which employs a severe four-voice texture written on four staves. In this movement, dynamic indications are lacking; the four voices have been orchestrated in strict counterpoint and without timbral considerations. The other movements do not contain many dynamic markings or idiomatic passages, especially when compared with the Overture in g-minor. It is interesting to note that Fasch betrays his characteristic mixture of French and Italian influences through the indications he makes in the margin. The oboes are referred to as «hautbois» (the French name for the instrument), the strings by their Italian names and the bassoon is called «bassone», a sort of Italian-French hybrid.

It is difficult to summarize Johann Friedrich Fasch’s contribution to orchestral music, due to the diversity of his output. Like Telemann, he worked within an existing genre which he helped to develop into a ‘international’ and ‘modern’ orchestral medium. For this reason alone Fasch was held in high regard by his contemporaries. Perhaps he was flexible towards his clients, the important chapels to which he was the ‘Hoflieferant’. The overtures reflect, besides Fasch’s professional skill, the prestige and the technical level of the orchestras for which they were written. This recording aims to make Fasch’s music and the era in which it was written a little more tangible.

simple harmony. The orchestra part, although using exactly the same forces as the Dresden overture (three oboes, bassoon, strings and basso continuo), is considerably less sophisticated. For instance, the bass lines are of the Trommelbass-type, contributing mainly rhythmical impetus and not much in the way of thematic material. Muted strings (con sordino) make a notable appearance in the second Aria in pastoral character. In general, this overture might be described as ‘galant’ with its light rococo atmosphere being suggested by simple means.

Durant des décennies, il y transforma la modeste Concert-Stube en une des meilleures chapelles de Prusse. A sa mort, sa musique tomba rapidement dans l’oubli, n’ayant plus qu’une valeur anecdotique en marge d’une histoire de la musique dominée par Bach et Haendel. Fasch n’était pourtant pas un obscur maître de chapelle du baroque tardif allemand. Son autobiographie nous donne une image brillante du musicien et de sa carrière. Ce document contient en outre de nombreuses informations utiles à une meilleure compréhension des ouvertures de Fasch.

Dans sa Lebensläuffe (1757), le maître, au soir de sa vie, passe en revue ses nombreuses expériences au sein du monde musical. Il raconte avec fierté comment, en tant que jeune garçon de douze ans doté d’une belle voix de soprano, il fut remarqué à Weißenfels par Krieger. Un an plus tard il se rendit à Leipzig, où Kuhnau, cantor de la Thomasschule, le prit sous sa protection. Il y rencontra également Telemann, qui lui prodigua un enseignement musical de base et lui prêta ses partitions. En 1708 – alors qu’il étudiait le droit à l’université de Leipzig – il fonda avec des condisciples un « collegium musicum ». La particularité des ouvertures de Fasch réside dans leur assimilation originale des influences françaises et italiennes. Fasch suivait en cela l’exemple de Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767). La tragédie lyrique de Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) leur a servi de modèle pour le premier mouvement, à savoir l’ouverture à proprement parler. Elle consiste en une introduction lente et majestueuse, caractérisée par des

Afin de se perfectionner, il entreprit ensuite un voyage d’étude à travers les contrées germanophones et se rendit ainsi à Darmstadt, où Graupner lui enseigna l’écriture, gracieusement durant quatorze semaines. Les titres évoquent parfois des scènes ludiques, théâtrales comme par exemple la danse trépidante des Jardiniers. L’auditeur y décèlera non sans raison des ressemblances avec les ballets divertissements de Lully ou les suites de François Couperin. Fasch n’était cependant pas un épigone de Lully.

Les œuvres qu’il composa pour la Saksische Hofkapelle, à savoir les Ouvertures en sol mineur et sol majeur (composées v.1740) trahissent une grande influence italienne. La chapelle de Dresde recevait à l’époque régulièrement la visite de musiciens de la Péninsule, comme les maîtres vénitiens Vivaldi et Albinoni. Sous l’influence de Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783), qui s’était formé à Naples, Dresde était devenue depuis 1731 une métropole incontournable pour l’opéra italien. Fasch goûta ainsi à ce genre et dota ses ouvertures de deux à trois véritables arias à da capo.

Lorsque nous écoutons en détail les ouvertures de Fasch, le côté original voire avant-gardiste de son écriture nous frappe. Hugo Riemann fut le premier à établir cela en 1900. Il compara quatorze de ses ouvertures à des compositions similaires de Telemann, Fux, Heinichen et d’autres maîtres du baroque tardif, et en conclut que Fasch comptait parmi les plus brillants contemporains de Bach.

Bien que datant d’une époque où la connaissance de l’histoire de la musique du dix-huitième siècle n’était que superficielle, les remarques de Riemann n’étaient

Dans le premier mouvement, les trois hautbois remplissent un rôle actif par rapport aux cordes. Fasch ne leur attribue pas – comme Bach – un rôle réellement polyphonique : bien que les hautbois s’imitent dans le fugato, l’entrée des cordes illustre comme leurs parties sont développées de manière idiomatique. En d’autres mots, leur rôle est défini sur base de leur timbre et de leurs possibilités techniques. Les violons assurent un rôle principalement rythmique tandis que les hautbois développent une palette orchestrale qui, pour l’époque, est très nuancée et polyvalente.

Cela donne lieu à de superbes passages où les blocs harmoniques des hautbois contrastent avec les mouvements agités des cordes.

pianos et fortes se succèdent ; au début du deuxième Aria (Allegro), les hautbois simulent des échos en jouant le même motif successivement forte, piano et pianissimo. Il est clair, au vu des parties séparées (de cette ouverture en particulier) de la main de Pisendel, ou annotées par ce dernier, que l’orchestre respectait ces détails à la lettre. Lorsque nécessaire, le premier violon ajoutait des indications de coups d’archet ou de phrasés qui rendaient le jeu de l’orchestre encore plus expressif.

La recherche musicologique à propos de l’héritage de Fasch a connu un nouvel élan ces vingt dernières années. La chute du Rideau de Fer a rendu accessibles de nombreuses bibliothèques de l’ex-Allemagne de l’Est et possible la diffusion de nombre d’études sur Fasch, méconnues de l’occident. Quatre-vingt-sept ouvertures lui ont été attribuées depuis. De nombreuses questions restent cependant sans réponse à ce jour, concernant notamment la datation des œuvres et l’évolution stylistique du compositeur. Nous ne pouvons qu’émettre des hypothèses, basées sur certaines éléments stylistiques (trompeurs ?), quant à la chronologie des trois ouvertures.

L’œuvre la plus ancienne est probablement l’Ouverture en ré mineur. Elle est en effet, du point de vue de la composition, la plus proche de la tradition baroque tardive. L’Ouverture et la Fugue en témoignent. Dans cette dernière, Fasch établit une texture stricte à quatre voix, qu’il note sur quatre portées. Aucune indication de nuance n’y apparaît ; l’orchestration se base sur des considérations purement contrapuntiques et ne fait aucun cas des différents timbres de l’ensemble. Dans les autres mouvements apparaissent également peu d’indications dynamiques et de passages idiomatiques – certainement en comparaison avec l’ouverture en sol mineur. Les indications de Fasch en marge des parties séparées présentent une particularité digne d’intérêt : les hautbois sont indiqués en français tandis que toutes les cordes le sont suivant la nomenclature italienne. Le basson est indiqué Bassone, terme français italianisé. Les sources franco-italiennes de l’ouverture allemande sont ainsi évoquées.

Fasch fait preuve d’une telle diversité qu’il est malaisé de cerner son rôle dans l’évolution de la musique orchestrale. Tout comme Telemann, il a pratiqué un genre existant et a contribué à le rendre ‘international’ et ‘moderne’. Il est clair que Fasch était pour cela très estimé de ses contemporains. Peut-être faisait-il preuve de beaucoup de flexibilité vis-à-vis de ses commanditaires, les éminentes chapelles pour lesquelles il écrivait. Ces ouvertures révèlent, outre le métier de Fasch, le prestige et le niveau technique exceptionnel de ces orchestres. Cet enregistrement vise à rendre une image plus tangible du compositeur et de son époque.

L’Ouverture en sol majeur est sans doute la plus récente. Cette œuvre se distingue des autres compositions par sa transparence, sa texture homophone et la simplicité de son harmonie. Le jeu orchestral est, bien qu’il s’agisse du même effectif (trois hautbois, basson, cordes et basse continue), nettement moins sophistiqué que dans l’ouverture en sol mineur. Le rôle de la basse est par exemple principalement rythmique. Fasch ne lui a que rarement réservé des interventions thématiques. On notera l’indication con sordino chez les cordes dans le deuxième Aria au caractère pastoral. Nous pouvons caractériser cette ouverture de ‘galante’ : le compositeur crée à l’aide de moyens élémentaires une atmosphère insouciante et rococo.

JOHANN FRIEDRICH FASCH ALS HOFLEVERANCIER VOOR DE ORKESTEN VAN DARMSTADT EN DRESDEN Traditioneel wordt de naam Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688-1758) met het kasteel van Zerbst verbonden. Decennialang bouwde de man er de bescheiden ConcertStube uit tot één van de beste Pruisische kapellen. Met zijn dood verdween spoedig de herinnering aan zijn muziek en werd ze een fait divers, in de kantlijn van een door Bach en Händel gedomineerd verhaal. Nochtans was Fasch geen onbenullig kapelmeestertje uit de Duitse laatbarokke muziekgeschiedenis. Zijn autobiografie toont een glanzend beeld van de musicus en zijn carrière. Bovendien bevat dit document een schat aan informatie, leidend tot een beter begrip van Fasch' ouvertures.

De oude meester kijkt in zijn Lebensläuffe (1757) terug op een rijkgevuld leven in het muziekbedrijf. Hij vertelt met trots hoe hij als twaalfjarige, begenadigd met een mooie sopraanstem, in Weißenfels door Krieger werd ontdekt. De sleutel van Fasch' ouvertures bevindt zich in de eigenzinnige verwerking van Franse en Italiaanse invloeden, die hij zich via het voorbeeld van Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) wist eigen te maken. Niet minder Frans is de suite van dansen (bourrÊe, gavotte, menuet) en karakterstukken in tweeledige vorm met herhalingen. De titels evoceren soms speelse, theatrale taferelen, denken we maar aan de huppelende tuinlieden (Jardiniers). Niet zonder reden zullen vele luisteraars gelijkenissen ontdekken met balletdivertissementen van Lully of suites van François Couperin. Toch was Fasch geen Lully-epigoon.

De werken die hij voor de Saksische Hofkapelle componeerde, met name de Ouvertures in g-klein en G-groot (beide ca. 1740), verraden vele Italiaanse invloeden.

De Dresdense kapel ontving in deze periode regelmatig Zuid-Europese meesters, zoals de Venetianen Vivaldi en Albinoni. Doordat de in Napels opgeleide Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783) er sinds 1731 verbleef, was Dresden destijds al evenzeer een epicentrum van de Italiaanse operamanie. Wanneer men Fasch' ouvertures in detail beluistert, drijven opvallende kenmerken boven die als origineel of zelfs avantgardistisch beschouwd mogen worden. Hugo Riemann kwam in 1900 voor het eerst tot een dergelijke conclusie. Hij vergeleek veertien van Fasch' ouvertures met gelijkaardige composities van Telemann, Fux, Heinichen en andere laatbarokke meesters, en rekende Fasch tot de meest uitmuntende tijdgenoten van Bach.

Hoewel Riemanns opmerkingen dateren uit een tijd met oppervlakkige kennis over de achttiende-eeuwse muziekgeschiedenis, was zijn stelling niet uit de lucht gegrepen. We illustreren dit aan de hand van de Ouverture in g-klein. In het openingsdeel

Andere troeven van de ouverture in g-klein zijn haar dynamische contrasten en gedetailleerde articulatie. Het Dresdense orkest stond bekend om zijn accurate uitvoeringen en virtuoze leden, onder wie violist Pisendel, hoboïst Johann Christoph Richter of contrabassist Jan Dismas Zelenka. De kwaliteiten van de orkestleden waren dusdanig gemeengoed dat Vivaldi, Heinichen, maar ook Fasch graag concerti con molti stromenti aan hen opdroegen: concerto's waarin verschillende solisten optraden. Het concertante orkestspel drong niet minder door in de ouverturestijl: de vele solistische episodes in Fasch' ouverture in g-klein kunnen niet gemist worden. Deze partituur is daarenboven veeleisend op dynamisch vlak. In de derde beweging, Jardiniers, worden piano's en forte's met elkaar afgewisseld; in de aanzet van de tweede aria (Allegro) simuleren de hobo's echo's door eenzelfde motief

daarvan vervullen de drie hobopartijen een actieve rol ten opzichte van de strijkers.

In tegenstelling tot Bachs orkestratiewijze gaat het hier niet zozeer om polyfone activiteit: hoewel de hobo's elkaar in het fugato één voor één imiteren, illustreert de inzet van de strijkers hoe ze idiomatisch uitgewerkt zijn. Hun rol is met andere woorden vanuit hun technische en timbrale mogelijkheden benaderd. Waar de violen voornamelijk voor ritmische beweging zorgen, creëren de hobo's een orkestraal palet dat voor deze periode aanzienlijk genuanceerd en veelzijdig is. Prachtige momenten zijn de passages waarin de hobo's als harmonische blokken tegenover de woelige strijkers geplaatst werden.

eerst forte, dan piano en uiteindelijk pianissimo te spelen. Dat het orkest dergelijke details nauwgezet respecteerde, blijkt uit de vele partijen (waaronder van deze ouverture) in Pisendels handschrift of met zijn verbeteringen. Waar nodig voegde de concertmeester extra aanduidingen toe, zoals boogstreken of fraseringstekens, die de orkestrale expressiviteit nog verfijnden.

Het musicologische onderzoek naar Fasch' nalatenschap heeft de laatste twintig jaar een grote opflakkering gekend. Door de val van het Ijzeren Gordijn kwamen vele voormalige D.D.R.-bibliotheken binnen het bereik van westerse onderzoekers of raakten Oost-Duitse studies over Fasch verspreid. Inmiddels werden zevenentachtig ouvertures aan hem toegewezen. Op het vlak van de datering en stilistische ontwikkeling blijven veel vragen totnogtoe onbeantwoord. De drie ouvertures kunnen we enkel hypothetisch, op basis van (misleidende?) stilistische overwegingen, in chronologische volgorde plaatsen.

Het oudste werk is wellicht de Ouverture in d-klein. Compositorisch leunt deze het dichtst aan bij de Laat-Barok, denken we maar aan de Ouverture en de Fuga. In de laatstgenoemde beweging voorzag Fasch in een strenge vierstemmige textuur die hij op vier notenbalken noteerde. In dit deel ontbreken dynamische aanwijzingen; de vier stemmen zijn strikt contrapuntisch, zonder timbrale overwegingen, georkestreerd. Ook in de overige bewegingen treft men – zeker in vergelijking tot de ouverture in g-klein – weinig dynamische markeringen of idiomatische passages aan. Fasch' aanduidingen naast de partijen vertonen een eigenaardigheid die het vermelden waard is: de hobo's zijn in het Frans aangeduid (Hautbois), terwijl alle strijkers in Italiaanse nomenclatuur vermeld werden. Voor 'fagot' lezen we Bassone, wat geïtalianiseerd Frans is. De Frans-Italiaanse bronnen van de Duitse ouverture worden als het ware verbaal opgeroepen.

In al haar diversiteit is het moeilijk om een slotverdict te vellen over de bijdrage van Johann Friedrich Fasch aan de orkestmuziek. Met Telemann beoefende hij een bestaand genre dat hij mee ontwikkelde tot een 'internationaal' en 'modern' orkestraal medium. Het staat als een paal boven water dat de meester hiervoor in hoog aanzien stond bij tijdgenoten. Misschien stelde hij zich flexibel op in functie van de noden van zijn opdrachtgevers, de belangrijke kapellen waarvoor hij als 'Hoflieferant' optrad. Naast Fasch' vakmanschap weerklinken in zijn ouvertures ook het prestige en technische peil van deze orkesten. Met deze opname wordt het beeld van de componist en zijn tijd alweer een stuk tastbaarder.

Mogelijk is de Ouverture in G-groot van meest recente datum. Het werk onderscheidt zich van de andere composities door zijn transparante, homofone textuur en eenvoudige harmonie. Het orkestrale spel is, niettegenstaande het om precies dezelfde bezetting gaat (drie hobo's, fagot, strijkers en basso continuo), beduidend minder gesofistikeerd als in de andere Dresdense ouverture. Zo zijn de baslijnen van het Trommelbaß-type: ze kennen hoofdzakelijk ritmische stuwkracht toe en hebben weinig thematische inbreng. Van groter belang is het voorkomen van gedempte strijkers (con sordino) in de tweede Aria met pastoraal karakter. Algemeen kunnen we deze ouverture als 'galant' karakteriseren: met behulp van elementaire middelen wordt een zorgeloze rococosfeer gesuggereerd.

JOHANN FRIEDRICH FASCH ALS HOFLIEFERANT DER ORCHESTER VON DARMSTADT UND DRESDEN Traditionell verbindet man den Namen Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688-1758) mit dem Schloss von Zerbst. Jahrzehntelang baute der Mann die bescheidene „Concert-Stube“ zu einer der besten preußischen Kapellen aus. Nach seinem Tod verschwand sehr schnell die Erinnerung an seine Musik und sie wurde von einer durch Bach und Händel dominierten Geschichte an den Rand gedrängt. Trotzdem war Fasch kein unbedeutender Kapellmeister der deutschen spätbarocken Musikgeschichte. Seine Autobiographie malt ein schillerndes Bild seiner Karriere und seines Lebens als Musiker. Darüberhinaus beinhaltet dieses Dokument eine Fülle an Informationen, die zu einem besseren Verständnis seiner Ouvertüren verhelfen.

Der alte Meister blickt in seinen „Lebensläuffe(n)“ (1757) auf ein reiches Musikerleben zurück. Er erzählt voller Stolz, wie er als 12-jähriger mit einer wunderschönen Sopranstimme in Weißenfels durch Krieger entdeckt wurde. Ein Jahr später nahm Kuhnau als Kantor der Thomasschule ihn unter seine Fittiche. Dort lernte er Telemann kennen, der ihm elementaren Musikunterricht erteilte und ihm seine Partituren auslieh. 1708, während seines Jurastudiums an der Universität Leipzig, gründete er mit Kommilitonen das „collegium musicum“. Mit Virtuosen wie Heinichen und Pisendel entwickelte es sich zu einem gefürchteten Konkurrenten von Kuhnaus Schulorchester. Um 1711 war Fasch so berühmt, dass er vom Herzog von Sachsen-Zeitz den Auftrag bekam, für Naumburg Opern zu komponieren. Um sich

Faschs Ouvertüren zeigen jedoch, dass er auch nach 1722 außerhalb Zerbsts aktiv geblieben ist. Keine einzige seiner Ouvertüren erschien während seines Lebens im Druck, was jedoch nicht verhinderte, dass sie hier und da aufgeführt wurden.

Zum Beispiel befindet sich das Autograph der Ouvertüre d-moll (FWK: d 4) in der Hessischen Landes- und Hochschulbibliothek in Darmstadt. Von demselben Werk befinden sich in dieser Sammlung ebensfalls Einzelstimmen in der Handschrift Christoph Graupners (1683-1760), in dessen Auftrag Fasch es wahrscheinlich geschrieben hatte. In der Sächsischen Landesbibliothek befinden sich die Partituren der Ouvertüren g-moll (FWK: g 2) und G-Dur (FWK: G 15), abgeschrieben unter der Aufsicht von Johann Georg Pisendel (1687-1755), der Mitglied des von Fasch gegründeten „collegium“ in Leipzig und Kapellmeister in Dresden war. Fasch lieferte also während seiner Anstellung in Zerbst Partituren an deutsche Musikmetropolen.

Was machte seine Ouvertüren so populär und einmalig?

Der Schlüssel zu Faschs Ouvertüren findet sich in der eigensinnigen Vermengung von italienischen und französischen Einflüssen, die er sich über das Vorbild Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) zu eigen gemacht hatte. Der „Tragédie lyrique“ von Jean Baptiste Lully entlehnten Telemann und Fasch die Struktur des Einleitungsteils, der eigentlichen Ouvertüre. Es ist eine langsame, majestätische

zu vervollkommnen unternahm er daraufhin eine Studienreise durch die deutschsprachige Musikwelt und landete so in Darmstadt. Er erhielt 14 Wochen lang kostenlosen Kompositionsunterricht bei Graupner. Als erfahrener Musiker hatte er später Stellen in Gera, Greiz und Prag inne. In Prag arbeitete er im Dienste des Grafen Morzin, dem späteren Auftraggeber von Vivaldis „Quattro Stagioni“ (1725) und Gönner Joseph Haydns (1759). Schließlich nahm er 1722 das anspruchsvolle Amt des Hofkapellmeisters im lutherischen Zerbst an, wodurch seinem Umschwärmtsein ein Ende gesetzt wurde.

Introduktion mit punktierten Rhythmen, gefolgt von einem schellen Fugato und abgerundet durch die Reprise der Introduktion. Ab und zu wich Fasch von diesem Schema ab. So wird das Fugato der Ouvertüre d-moll (ca. 1730-1740) unmittelbar durch die Einleitung unterbrochen.

Nicht weniger französisch ist die Suite bestehend aus Tänzen (Bourrée, Gavotte, Menuett) und Charakterstücken in zweiteiliger Form mit Wiederholungen. Die Titel erwecken zum Teil verspielte, theatralische Szenen, wenn wir zum Beispiel an die hüpfenden Gartenlieder („Jardiniers“) denken. Nicht ohne Grund werden viele Zuhorer Ähnlichkeiten mit Ballettdivertissements von Lully oder Suiten von Couperin entdecken. Fasch war jedoch kein Lully-Epigone.

Die Werke, die er für die Sächsische Hofkapelle komponierte, namentlich die Ouvertüren g-moll und G-Dur (beide ca. 1740 entstanden), zeigen vor allem italienische Einflüsse. Die Dresdner Kapelle empfing damals regelmäßig südeuropäische Meister wie zum Beispiel die Venetianer Vivaldi und Albinoni. Da der in Neapel ausgebildete Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783) seit 1731 in Dresden weilte, wurde diese Stadt zu einem Zentrum der italienischen Opernmanie. Fasch labte sich an der Quelle der italienischen Oper und komponierte in seinen Ouvertüren zwei bis drei große Arien in der da capo-Form.

Wenn man Faschs Ouvertüren genau anhört, treten auffallende Merkmale zutage, die man als originell oder sogar avantgardistisch bezeichnen könnte. Als erster kam Hugo Riemann schon 1900 zu diesem Schluß. Er verglich vierzehn Ouvertüren von Fasch mit ähnlichen Kompositionen von Telemann, Fux, Heinichen und anderen spätbarocken Meistern und beschrieb Fasch schließlich als herausragendsten Zeitgenossen Bachs.

Symphonische Dialoge waren Fasch ebenso nicht fremd. In der ersten Aria (Largo) derselben Ouvertüre tauschen Holzbläser und Streicher Themen aus. Ohne striktes kontrapunktisches Schema gruppieren sich die instrumentalen Kräfte ständig aufs Neue: Einmal ergreifen alle Streicher gemeinsam das Wort, dann wieder die Oboen. Die Fagottstimme fungiert nicht mehr als Verdoppelung der Bassstimme, wie man es sonst aus dieser Zeit kennt, sondern nimmt selbständig am orchestralen Geschehen teil.

Andere Höhepunkte der Ouvertüre g-moll sind die dynamischen Kontraste und die detaillierte Artikulation. Das Dresdener Orchester war bekannt für seine akkuraten Aufführungen und virtuosen Mitglieder, wie zum Beispiel den Geiger Pisendel, den Oboisten Johann Christoph Richter oder den Kontrabassisten Jan Dismas Zelenka.

Die Qualitäten des Orchesters waren derartig weit bekannt, dass Vivaldi, Heinichen und auch Fasch ihnen gerne „concerti con molti stromenti“ widmeten: Konzerte, in denen verschiedene Solisten zu Wort kamen. Das konzertante Orchesterspiel kam

Obwohl Riemanns Beobachtungen aus einer Zeit stammen, in der die Kenntnis über die Musik des 18. Jahrhunderts noch recht oberflächlich war, ist sein Standpunkt nicht aus der Luft gegriffen. Zu zeigen ist dies anhand der Ouvertüre g-moll.

In der Einleitung haben die drei Oboen eine wichtige, aktive Rolle verglichen mit den Streichern. Im Gegensatz zu Bachs Orchestrierungsweise geht es hier nicht so sehr um polyphone Aktivität. Obwohl im Fugato die Oboen einander imitieren, zeigt der Einsatz der Streicher, wie sehr diese idiomatisch ausgearbeitet sind. Ihnen nähert sich Fasch ausgehend von ihren technischen und klanglichen Möglichkeiten. Wo die Geigen vor allem für rhythmische Bewegung sorgen, bilden die Oboen eine orchestrale Palette, die für diese Zeit ausgesprochen nuanciert und vielseitig ist.

Wunderschöne Passagen gibt es, in den die Oboen in harmonischen Blöcken den turbulenten Streichern gegenübergestellt werden.

auch in der Ouvertüre nicht zu kurz, was besonders in Faschs Ouvertüre g-moll nicht zu überhören ist. Darüberhinaus ist diese Partitur auch auf dynamischer Ebene sehr anspruchsvoll. Im dritten Satz „Jardiniers“ wechseln sich piano- und forte-Passagen ständig ab, zu Beginn der zweiten Aria (Allegro) spielen die Oboen Echos, indem sie dasselbe Motive erst forte, dann piano und schließlich pianissimo spielen. Dass das Orchester solche Details genau wiedergab, ist aus den vielen Partituren (u.a. diese Ouvertüre) in der Handschrift Pisendels bzw. aus seinen Verbesserungen ersichtlich. Wo es nötig war, fügte der Konzertmeister Ergänzungen wie zum Beispiel Bogenstriche oder Phrasierungszeichen, die die orchestrale Expressivität verfeinerten, hinzu.

Die musikologische Forschung in der Nachlassenschaft Faschs blühte in den letzten 20 Jahren auf. Durch das Verschwinden des Eisernen Vorhangs bekamen viele westliche Wissenschaftler Zugang zu ehemaligen DDR-Bibliotheken und wurden ostdeutsche Studien über Fasch bekannt. Inzwischen schreibt man ihm siebenundachtzig Ouvertüren zu. Fragen im Hinblick auf die Entstehungszeit und stilistische Entwicklungen bleiben bis heute noch unbeantwortet. Die drei Ouvertüren können wir nur hypothetisch auf der Grundlage von eventuell fehlleitenden stilistischen Erwägungen in chronologische Reihenfolge setzen.

Das älteste Werk ist womöglich die Ouvertüre d-moll. Kompositorisch lehnt sie sich am ehesten am Spätbarock an, vor allem in der Ouvertüre und Fuge. Der letzteren legte Fasch eine strenge vierstimmige Textur zugrunde, die er auf vier Notenbalken notierte. In diesem Satz fehlen jegliche dynamischen Hinweise, die vier Stimmen sind streng kontrapunktisch und ohne klangliche Erwägung orchestriert. Auch in den anderen Sätzen findet man vor allem im Vergleich zu der Ouvertüre g-moll wenig dynamische Zeichen oder idiomatische Passagen. Faschs Hinweise außerhalb des Notentextes zeigen noch etwas Erwähnenswertes: Die Oboen werden

Möglicherweise ist die Ouvertüre G-Dur das jüngste Werk. Es unterscheidet sich von den anderen Kompositionen durch seine transparente, homophone Textur und die einfache Harmonik. Das Orchesterspiel ist hier, obwohl es sich um genau dieselbe Besetzung wie in der Dresdener Ouvertüre handelt (drei Oboen, Fagott, Streicher und basso continuo), weit weniger komplex. Die Bassführung ist eher im Stil des „Trommelbasses“ gehalten: Wenig thematisch, dafür aber wichtig als Motor des gesamten Stückes. Zu erwähnen wären auch noch die gedämpften Streicher (con sordino) in der zweiten Aria mit pastoralem Charakter. Insgesamt könnte man diese Ouvertüre als „galant“ beschreiben. Durch Gebrauch von elementaren Mitteln wird eine sorglose Rokokoatmosphäre suggeriert.

Es ist schwierig ein Urteil über Johann Friedrich Faschs Beitrag zur Orchestermusik zu fällen. Mit Telemann übte er ein schon bestehendes Genre aus und entwickelte es zu einem internationalen und modernen Orchestermedium. Es ist sehr deutlich, dass der Meister dafür von seinen Zeitgenossen sehr hoch angesehen war. Vielleicht war er flexibel genug, sich seinen Auftraggebern, den wichtigen Kapellen, für die er als Hoflieferant arbeitete, anzupassen. Neben Faschs Fachwissen spiegeln seine Ouvertüren auch das Prestige und technische Niveau dieser Orchester wieder.

Mit dieser Aufnahme wird das Bild dieses Komponisten und seiner Zeit wieder ein bisschen greifbarer.
