RSNO Junior Chorus The RSNO Junior Chorus is one of the leading children and youth choirs in the UK. Part of the RSNO family, the RSNO Junior Chorus enables more than 400 children aged seven to eighteen to enjoy an unparalleled musical experience. The Junior Chorus seeks to provide a musical education by teaching the young people involved how to learn and appreciate music. In addition to encouraging the youngsters to learn about expression, the Chorus also acts as a means to improving the confidence and selfbelief of the talented young musicians. It is an unrivalled experience for the children to learn and participate in outstanding, professional music making under the leadership of its charismatic director Christopher Bell. Originally formed in 1978 by Jean Kidd, the RSNO Junior Chorus has built up a considerable reputation singing under some of the world’s most distinguished conductors and appearing on radio and television. RSNO Junior Chorus members sing regularly with Scotland’s National Orchestra in major concert halls and festivals throughout the country, as well as appearances at the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival.

Christopher Bell Christopher Bell has been conducting and presenting family and holiday style concerts for over twenty-five years. His free and easy conversational style with audiences of all ages coupled with quirky and fun programming have endeared him to concert audiences in his birthplace in Belfast, his current home in Scotland and further afield in Chicago, Australia and New Zealand. Bell’s willingness to don a costume or motivate an audience to participate puts smiles on faces of tens of thousands of people annually. Alongside twelve Christmas concerts a year, he has conducted Viennese programmes, come and play events and he has directed orchestras playing film soundtracks, most recently the RSNO’s accompaniment to The Wizard of Oz. He has conducted and presented the annual Independence Eve concert in Chicago since 2005. Balancing this lighter side, Bell is known as a leading choral director working to the highest possible standards in exactly the same parts of the world. He is currently Chorus Director of the Grant Park Festival Chorus in Chicago preparing its chorus of up to 120 professional singers for six separate programmes in the summer. Since 2007 he has been Chorusmaster of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus re-establishing them as one of the leading volunteer choruses in Europe. He is the Founder Director of the National Youth Choir of Scotland and since 1996 has moulded that organisation into one of the finest youth companies in Europe. In addition he is Director of the RSNO Junior Chorus, a 400 voice children’s choir working with the RSNO for concerts, broadcasts and recordings. On the Signum label, his recording with the RSNO Junior Chorus and the RSNO, A Family Christmas, captures the fun of his live concerts.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra The Royal Scottish National Orchestra is one of Europe’s leading symphony orchestras. Formed in 1891 as the Scottish Orchestra, the company became the Scottish National Orchestra in 1950, and was awarded Royal Patronage in 1977. Throughout its history, the Orchestra has played an integral part in Scotland’s musical life. Many renowned conductors have contributed to its success, including George Szell, Sir John Barbirolli, Walter Susskind, Sir Alexander Gibson, Neeme Järvi, Walter Weller, Alexander Lazarev and Stéphane Denève. In 2012 the RSNO welcomed British-Canadian conductor Peter Oundjian as Music Director and Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård as Principal Guest Conductor. The Orchestra is joined for choral performances by the RSNO Chorus, directed by Gregory Batsleer and the RSNO Junior Chorus, directed by Christopher Bell. In 2015 the RSNO took up residence in its specially designed building within the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, enabling the Orchestra to engage with audiences in new and diverse ways. The RSNO has a worldwide reputation for the quality of its recordings, receiving two Diapason d’Or de l’année awards for Symphonic Music (Denève/Roussel 2007; Denève/Debussy 2012) and eight GRAMMYAward nominations. Over 200 releases are available, including the complete symphonies of Sibelius (Gibson), Prokofiev (Järvi), Glazunov (Serebrier), Nielsen and Martinů (Thomson), Roussel (Denève) and the major orchestral works of Debussy (Denève).

The RSNO is supported by the Scottish Government. 13
