BEETHOVEN VIOLIN SONATAS NOS. 1, 5 “SPRING” & 10

LORENZO GATTO VIOLIN JULIEN LIBEER PIANO

ALPHA 407 AUGUST 2018

Building on the success of their first album of Beethoven violin sonatas (Alpha 240), which won a Diapason d’Or of the year (the magazine hailed ‘the birth of a great duo’) and ‘Choc’ de Classica, Lorenzo Gatto and Julien Libeer continue their complete recording of the cycle. ‘Beethoven’s sonatas have become the core of our musical lives. Rehearsed, tried out in concert, given a rest, rehearsed again.’ Since performing the entire cycle over three consecutive evenings at Flagey in Brussels in 2016, they have played them repeatedly, and they met again at the end of 2017, at the Hilversum studio in Amsterdam, to record three more sonatas: ‘Surprise, even now?… Anyone who frequents Beethoven for a long time is no longer surprised to be surprised. For him, everything is coherent, but nothing is written in advance.’ So they experiment here again and Julien has chosen a piano with parallel stringing: ‘The resonance of Chris Maene Straight Strung illuminates this music in a subtly different way. We enjoy ourselves.’ - Lorenzo Gatto, Julien Libeer

DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH SYMPHONY NO. 5

© Painting: Doma Suszczyńska “1937”

KRZYSZTOF URBANSKI CONDUCTING NDR ELBPHILHARMONIE ORCHESTRA

ALPHA 427 AUGUST 2018

‘Shostakovich’s Fifth is without doubt one of the greatest symphonies ever written, and it is also one of my personal favourites. This genuine masterpiece represents a mirror image of the world around Shostakovich: in it he depicted in music the reality of life in Leningrad in 1937 from his own perspective. For him this was the “worst of times”. After the premiere of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and the official denunciation of the opera prompted by Stalin’s stormy reaction to the work, the composer was closely watched by the Party. (…) This sense of threat however did not silence his need to compose. He had to find a way to cope with the sense of pressure, and to create new music which would please the authorities and keep the danger of public criticism at a safe distance. His Fourth Symphony had been denounced for its dissonances, its bleak atmosphere, and its ending, fading away into silence. So for his Fifth Symphony the composer deliberately simplified his musical language in order to produce a work that might be considered “accessible” by the Party: one that would be perceived as full of positive spirit, with a resoundingly triumphant conclusion. ‘One might imagine that such dubious circumstances could have destroyed the talented young composer, and turned him into a Soviet propagandist. For on the surface, the piece appears to be full of orchestral bravura, optimistic, “happy”. On the contrary, I believe the symphony to be actually extremely tragic...’ - Krzysztof Urbański (from the booklet notes)

JACQUES ARCADELT MADRIGALI, CHANSONS, MOTETTI

CAPPELLA MEDITERRANEA DOULCE MÉMOIRE CHŒUR DE CHAMBRE DE NAMUR

RIC 392 AUGUST 2018

Although he is mentioned in all the histories of music as one of the creators of the Italian madrigal, including the unforgettable Il bianco e dolce cigno, Jacques Arcadelt has not yet gained the place he deserves in today’s musical world. He was in the service of the Medici, the Papacy and the kings of France; can one imagine a more prestigious list of achievements? Esteemed by Michelangelo, celebrated by Ronsard, he benefited from a large number of editions that made his reputation in the main European musical centres of his time, and was still admired at the height of the Baroque era. The recording sessions for this box set caused a genuine emotional shock; now we could so easily understand why his contemporaries saw him as an exceptional composer. In 2018, the year in which we celebrate the 450th anniversary of the death of Jacques Arcadelt, Ricercar releases a box set of three albums covering the principal genres that made his name – the madrigal, the chanson and sacred music – with three prestigious ensembles. This journey through the various stages of his career will also be illustrated by a particularly extensive booklet.

VIENNE, FIN DE SIÈCLE BARBARA HANNIGAN SOPRANO REINBERT DE LEEUW PIANO

© Marco Borggreve

After the huge success of her first album for Alpha, Crazy Girl Crazy (Alpha 293), which received a Grammy Award, a JUNO Classical Award in Canada, the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, FFFF in Télérama and DIAMANT in Opéra Magazine and was BBC Music Magazine CD of the Month, Barbara Hannigan is back with her long-time collaborator, the Dutch pianist and great interpreter of twentieth-century music Reinbert de Leeuw, for a recital exploring the roots of modern music, with the composers who left their mark on the turn of the twentieth century: Hugo Wolf (Mignon Lieder), Arnold Schoenberg (Vier Lieder, Op. 2), Anton Webern (Fünf Lieder nach Gedichten von R. Dehmel), Alexander Zemlinsky (selected lieder), Alma Mahler (Die stille Nacht, etc.) and Alban Berg (Sieben frühe Lieder). From what has been called the Second Viennese School, an incredible mix of musicians, painters, writers and other artists frequenting salons and cafés, a completely new musical language was born. Barbara Hannigan is especially fond of this repertory and has long championed it. Of course, we think of Berg and his unforgettable Lulu: ‘The artist who sings’, as journalists often like to describe her, embodies this music with her legendary dramatic sense, making each of these lieder a story in itself, even a mini-opera…

STEVE REICH DRUMMING

KUNIKO

CKD 582 SEPTEMBER 2018

KUNIKO’s fifth studio recording sees the hugely talented percussionist return to the music of Steve Reich, a composer she has championed since her debut recording in 2011. In Drumming KUNIKO delivers a tour-de-force performance of the work which is widely considered minimalism’s first masterpiece. Performing all of the parts herself, and adopting the same multitrack approach which was so successful on kuniko plays reich, KUNIKO once again displays the technical virtuosity and flawless musicianship for which she is renowned. This seminal work employs Reich’s trademark phasing technique; subtle changes in timing and timbre cause the soundscape to build through a series of rhythmic loops that gradually evolve to create a wholly immersive experience. A captivating live performer, KUNIKO joined in the worldwide celebrations of the boundary-breaking composer with a series of concerts in Europe and Japan in recognition of his eightieth birthday. Drumming sees the awardwinning percussionist once again demonstrate the musical intelligence and flair which caused Reich to describe her as ‘a first-rate percussionist’.

DEUTSCHES SYMPHONIE-ORCHESTER BERLIN ROBIN TICCIATI CONDUCTOR MAGDALENA KOŽENÁ MEZZO-SOPRANO

CKD 610 SEPTEMBER 2018

September 2018 marks the start of Robin Ticciati’s second season as Music Director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the release of his second recording with his new orchestra. The partnership’s critically acclaimed debut of Debussy and Fauré led MusicWeb International to comment: ‘[this] certainly whets the appetite for future releases from Robin Ticciati with the DSO Berlin.’ This second all-French programme sees Magdalena Kožená return to perform a selection of songs by Henri Duparc alongside orchestral music by his fellow countryman Maurice Ravel. The popular Suite No. 2 from Ravel’s epoch-making ballet Daphnis et Chloé showcases Ticciati’s flair for highlighting intricacies of detail and colour; listen as the beautifully descriptive sunrise (Lever du jour) bursts into vivid, multi-hued life. In Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales Ticciati creates a well-paced, yet graceful, Impressionist swirl with clearly defined textures and shimmering orchestral colours. Duparc’s mélodies, which Ravel himself described as ‘works of genius’, sound particularly opulent in their orchestral scoring; the warm tones of Kožená’s ravishing voice provide a perfect match.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH BRANDENBURG CONCERTOS NOS. 1-6 ORCHESTRAL SUITE NO. 2

ZEFIRO ALFREDO BERNARDINI

A 452 SEPTEMBER 2018

Following its highly acclaimed album featuring the three most richly scored Ouvertures (Gramophone Editor’s Choice – shortlisted for the 2017 Gramophone Awards and included among the Top 10 recent Bach recordings), Zefiro comes full circle with the famous collection of Concerts avec plusieurs instruments, that kaleidoscope of colours that seems almost tailor-made to highlight the salient qualities of the ensemble founded by the three historical wind specialists Alfredo Bernardini and Paolo and Alberto Grazzi. Thanks to experience gained in countless performances and recordings with the leading conductors and ensembles, but also to thorough research into the most appropriate instruments and pitch (398 Hz, i.e. the ‘authentic’ French pitch), this brand new recording exudes liveliness, flair and knowledge, and features some of the greatest names on the Baroque music scene, among them Cecilia Bernardini, Gabriele Cassone, Francesco Corti, Lorenz Duftschmid, Marcello Gatti, Gaetano Nasillo and Dorothee Oberlinger. Also included is the more intimate B minor Suite with flute (BWV 1067), thus filling the gap left by the earlier recording.

FRANZ SCHUBERT WINTERREISE JULIAN PRÉGARDIEN TENOR DEUTSCHE RADIO PHILHARMONIE SAARBRÜCKEN KAISERSLAUTERN ROBERT REIMER CONDUCTOR

© D.R.

The tenor Julian Prégardien joins ALPHA for several recording projects that will showcase every facet of his talent, notably lieder and oratorio. His first album on the label is devoted to one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of music, Winterreise, but in a version with orchestra composed by Hans Zender in 1993. He scored the work for orchestral forces very different from the ensembles used in the nineteenth century (including, for example, a soprano saxophone, an accordion, a harmonica, a wind machine, a guitar and a very large percussion section). Hans Zender describes his work as a ‘creative transformation’: ‘My own reading of Winterreise does not seek a new expressive interpretation, but systematically takes advantage of the freedoms that performers normally allow themselves in an intuitive way: slowing down or accelerating the tempo, transposition into different keys, emphasizing and nuancing colours.’ Following a staged production of this version of the work, Christian Merlin wrote in Le Figaro in 2018: ‘A spellbinding Winterreise... The tenor Julian Prégardien, at once an exceptional singer and a committed actor, gives an incendiary performance combining vocal expressiveness, loving attention to the words and theatrical presence with sensitivity and intelligence in equal measure.’

HENRY PURCELL SONGS & DANCES

TIM MEAD COUNTERTENOR LES MUSICIENS DE SAINT-JULIEN FRANÇOIS LAZAREVITCH CONDUCTOR

ALPHA 419 OCTOBER 2018

Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, guided by François Lazarevitch’s virtuoso flute, have already led us along the roads of Ireland and Scotland, notably the High Road to Kilkenny (ALPHA 234), a great success in 2016. This time, they venture into England with an essentially secular programme devoted to Henry Purcell (1659-95), varying the mood by alternating between instrumental dances and songs performed by the English countertenor Tim Mead, including ‘O Solitude’ and ‘What power art thou’. While Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien have chosen these celebrated pieces for pleasure above all, with this English programme they also fill in a new piece in their jigsaw map of the United Kingdom. At the same time, they demonstrate the musical porosity of Ireland, Scotland and England – and the atypical colours of the small string ensemble complemented by two flutes, a harp and harpsichord/lute continuo further underline the fact. The common thread, dear to Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, is that of folk music lying at the heart of art music, in a mixture of origins, practices and repertories. We can easily recognize ‘Scotch and Irish tunes’ that Purcell incorporates in his overtures, jigs, hornpipes and chaconnes. The countertenor Tim Mead punctuates the dances with songs composed for the operatic or dramatic stage or for chamber performance.

FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN NOCTURNES

INGRID FLITER PIANO

© Anton Dressier

Ingrid Fliter has established a reputation as one of the preeminent interpreters of Chopin and remains the only woman to receive the esteemed Gilmore Artist Award. Her 2014 recording of Chopin’s Preludes was named among the Top 10 Chopin recordings by Gramophone, whilst her recording of Chopin’s Piano Concertos with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra was praised for its ‘power and passion’ by The Telegraph (securing one of several five-star reviews). A graceful and charismatic performer, Fliter is known for her effortless technique and thoughtful, sensitive music-making. Every performance is deeply personal and full of freshness and poetry, perfect for exploring Chopin’s masterful Nocturnes. Chopin composed his Nocturnes throughout his creative life and succeeded in both elevating and popularizing the form. His inspirational and original style, evident from even his early works, grew and matured to create an epic collection of gorgeously melodic piano music. Fliter included a tantalizing taster of this new album on her Preludes recording, adding Nocturnes Nos. 9 and 27 to round off the performance, which had several critics hungry for more.

GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL ODE FOR ST CECILIA’S DAY

DUNEDIN CONSORT JOHN BUTT CONDUCTOR

© David Barbour

Under the invigorating directorship of John Butt, Dunedin Consort continually finds fresh ways of bringing Baroque music to life. In April Butt conducted a performance of Handel’s Ode for St Cecilia’s Day at the closing concert of the 2018 Misteria Paschalia Festival in Poland. Appearing with the award-winning Dunedin Consort was tenor Ian Bostridge, who returns for the new recording alongside soprano Carolyn Sampson. Dunedin Consort has set the bar high for this Handel recording after achieving widespread acclaim for its Gramophone Awardwinning Messiah. Fans are sure to be delighted with this rich and colourful tribute to music’s patron saint. The recording also includes Handel’s Concerto Grosso in A minor Op. 6 No. 4, in which the Dunedin Consort’s instrumentalists take centre stage.

DE VEZ EN CUANDO LA VIDA JOAN MANUEL SERRAT Y EL SIGLO DE ORO

MARIANA FLORES SOPRANO CAPPELLA MEDITERRANEA LEONARDO GARCÍA ALARCÓN CONDUCTOR

ALPHA 412 ALPHA 428 OCTOBER 2018

‘The memories of my childhood in Argentina always bring me back to the singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat, synonymous with shared family moments... ; De vez en cuando la vida made me cry as it has made millions of people cry in Latin America, Spain and elsewhere… Joan Manuel Serrat is part of our life, he is our Jacques Brel! Or, if we project ourselves back to the sixteenth century, he is in a sense our little Camerata Fiorentina, that movement of Italian poets and musicians in Florence. Serrat has allowed the whole of Latin America and Spain to reappropriate the works of its poets... He has also been synonymous with freedom and the struggle against dictatorial regimes. I asked my good friend Quito Gato to arrange these songs for our ensemble, Cappella Mediterranea. The orchestration retains typical seventeenth-century instruments: recorders, cornett, violins, viola da gamba, cellos, lutes, harp, harpsichord, organ, with some percussion and a double bass. These period instruments allow us to travel back in time and compare Serrat’s romances with the Ensaladas of Mateo Flecha (1481-1553) – “La Bomba” – or a piece by Francesco Valls, a Catalan who is now forgotten yet was one of the greatest composers of seventeenth-century Spain, the polyphony of Guillaume Dufay, a composition by Juan Cabanilles that recalls a Bach Passion. The Xacaras, a satirical genre from the Spanish Golden Age (Francisco Gómez de Quevedo, Pedro Calderón de la Barca) dialogues with Serrat’s works. As does the Música callada of the Catalan composer Frederic Mompou, transcribed here for the harp.’

MATTHEW LOCKE FOR LOVERS OF CONSORT MUSIC

PHANTASM ELIZABETH KENNY LUTE

© Marco Borggreve

Recorded in Boxgrove Priory, West Sussex, this new album features consort music by Matthew Locke. In the first of what will be a series exploring his consort music, Phantasm performs Locke’s Consort of Four Parts and The Flat Consort. Most excitingly, this release will reunite the partnership of Phantasm with lute player Elizabeth Kenny. Their last album together, Dowland: Lachrimae or Seven Tears, won both a Gramophone Award and a Diapason d’Or de l’Année, ensuring widespread anticipation for this coming project. With Phantasm’s director Laurence Dreyfus describing Locke’s music as having both ‘striking muscularity’ and also ‘purest lyricism and… most generous warmth’, this promises to be another intriguing programme from the worldrenowned viol consort.

ALESSANDRO STRADELLA LA DORICLEA. OPERA PER 6 VOCI E STRUMENTI

IL POMO D’ORO ANDREA DE CARLO CONDUCTOR

A 454 OCTOBER 2018

Written shortly before his tragic death at the hands of a hired killer, La Doriclea is the final masterpiece of one of the greatest opera composers of the seventeenth century, who follows in the footsteps of Monteverdi and Cavalli and projects us into the following century. Love, disguise, duels: La Doriclea contains several topoi of later opera. Refined and amusing, it alternates touching lamentos with irresistibly comic scenes, in which the character of Giraldo, a veritable precursor of the basso buffo, allows us to glimpse Rossinian atmospheres. Emőke Baráth (Doriclea) and Xavier Sabata (Fidalbo) alongside Giuseppina Bridelli (Lucinda) and Luca Cervoni (Celindo) and the comic couple of Delfina (Gabriella Martellacci) and Giraldo (Riccardo Novaro) bring a complex and fascinating role-playing game to life. La Doriclea was absent for many years from the list of compositions by Stradella, until it resurfaced in an article of 1938, only to disappear again until recently, when the manuscript came to light once more, arousing great interest and controversies around its rediscovery. The exciting story of the manuscript seems to reflect the passionate, intense and dramatic life of its composer, the Caravaggio of music. This world premiere recording of La Doriclea is a major achievement for The Stradella Project, which here reaches its fifth volume.

QUARTETS NOS. 10 & 14 ‘DEATH AND THE MAIDEN’

QUATUOR VAN KUIJK

© Nikolaj Lund

‘When we approach a composer, we like to immerse ourselves in his or her early works, in order to understand the evolution of the person behind the score. ‘It was quite naturally that the idea emerged of coupling a youthful quartet, No. 10, composed at the age of sixteen, with a masterpiece by the mature Schubert, the “Death and the Maiden” Quartet No. 14. ‘This journey through time sheds a new light on the later works, because the process of getting to know the young Franz Schubert naturally means deepening our knowledge of his language, but also allows us to refine our appropriation of the style, sound and articulation specific to him. ‘In Quartet No. 10, we tried to achieve purity in our playing, a crystalline sound that allows the music to unfold in the most fluid and natural way, keeping in mind the intimacy of the family living room for which these pages were written. ‘In No. 14, more tormented, brusquer, more intense, we attempt to pay homage to the work’s symphonic dimension, and to its most sombre, most violent asperities. ‘Two sides to one man: the bright and dark faces of Schubert.’ - Quatuor van Kuijk

HAYDN2032 VOL. 7 ‘GLI IMPRESARI’ SYMPHONIES NOS. 9, 65 & 67 MOZART: MUSIC ON ‘THAMOS, KING OF EGYPT’

KAMMERORCHESTER BASEL GIOVANNI ANTONINI

ALPHA 680 ALPHA 681 NOVEMBER 2018

The complete recording of Haydn’s symphonies continues under the direction of Giovanni Antonini… Three things you may not know about Haydn: 1. The son of a music-loving master wheelwright The second of twelve children, Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 to a modest family. His father, Mathias, like his father before him, was a master wheelwright in Rohrau an der Leitha. He also had a beautiful tenor voice. It was from him that the young Joseph, from the age of five, got his fascination for music and singing. 2. A child with the voice of an angel… At a very early age, Haydn revealed a voice that was both sonorous and delicate. He was accepted into the Hainburg choir school at the age of six, and subsequently, having produced a particularly sumptuous trill at audition, entered the ranks of the choir of St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, where he remained until he was sixteen. 3.… but very unruly One day, on the orders of Empress Maria Theresa, he was punished for having climbed scaffolding at Schönbrunn Palace. As he approached puberty, it was suggested he should be castrated so as to conserve his soprano voice and his place in the choir. Haydn owed it to his father’s violent opposition that he did not end up as a castrato. To be continued…
