COR EUROPAE  Prague has always been considered as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Th appellation “Heart of Europe — Cor Europae” probably comes from the ancient history of the lan — from the thirteenth century, when the Kingdom of Bohemia extended from the Baltic to th Meditteranean Sea. This period was very progressive — especially the reign of the king Wenceslau II Přemyslid — and culminated in the reign of the Bohemian king and the Roman Emperor Charle IV. Bohemia was a center of European learning, and home to many important scholars, especiall after the establishment of the Charles University in 1348, but it preserves cultural traditions at leas a century older than that. An outstanding example of this tradition is the repertory for the feast o the Nativity of Jesus. The Christmas rite of Prague cathedral in the 14th century was one of the mos beautiful and spectacular moments of the liturgical year. The hill upon the river Vltava where Prague castle stands dominates the city of Prague. Th two ecclesiastical institutions based in this area – St George’s Convent and the Chapter of St Vitu Cathedral – were very important for its liturgical and repertory tradition in the Middle Ages. St George’s Convent of Benedictine nuns at Prague Castle was established in 976 by abbes Mlada of the ruling Přemyslid family. It was the first Benedictine foundation in Bohemia. Th convent sources are full of musical treasures, waiting to be discovered. The pieces Splendor patri et sol, Festivali melodia, Puer natus in Bethlehem, Patrem Parit filia and Nos respectu gracie are goo examples of a popular “benedicamen” form. This song form, very often called a cantio, is preserved i many convent manuscripts of the 14th century — we have chosen those with the Nativity theme o devoted to Our Lady. This widely favored form comes with a poetic text which always includes th invocation Benedicamus Domino at the end part of the song. The convent’s liturgy for the feast of the Nativity was different from the cathedral one, bu some of the movements had a similar character. The antiphon Ave spes nostra was used durin the vespers procession of the Nativity feast, and antiphon which could be heard during th

7

whole of Advent. It represented a “saying goodbye” to the preceding period of expectation and opening of the new festive period. The vespers hymn Veni Redemptor gencium was part of the Advent liturgy as well, although the last strophe Praesepe iam fulget tuum was only used for the Nativity. Turning to the Chapter of St Vitus Cathedral, we should start with its ancient history. Importantly, Bohemia had been under the influence of Regensburg before the bishopric was found in Prague in 973, and south German traces can be found in the basic plainchant repertory of the institution. The so-called Collegium Cleri — later called the Chapter of the St Vitus Cathedral — was a seat of the bishop and one of the most important ecclesiastical centers in Bohemia. Looking at the chapter sources we find another repertory which has been influenced by or came from western Europe — the repertory of tropes, which is preserved in tropary sources from the end of the 12th century and from the era of deacon Vitus (2nd half of the 13th century), as well as in the collection of the archbishop Arnošt of Pardubice from the 1360s. This repertory brings us to the Aquitaine region about 1100. The trope Lumen clarum rite for the introit Lux fulgebit is one of the examples, as well as the Kyrie trope Creator, pater increate and the offertory trope Nate Dei, which we present on this cd. The culminating moment of the liturgy of the Prague Nativity matins during the reign of the emperor Charles IV. (1316 - 1378) was the third responsory Descendit de caelis. The usual responsory shape (responsory — verse — a reprise of the second responsory part) was enriched with the so-called neuma triplex (the reprise was repeated three times with a different melisma at the end) as well as with an extensive trope Fabrica mundi. The occurrence of an early polyphony composing style called organum in the 14th-century cathedral repertory is another interesting feature. The two and three part readings from the 1st nocturne of the Nativity matins - Lectio Primo tempore, Consolamini, and Consurge are the best examples of the reception and an adaptation of this style to the local fashion. This outdated way of composing was still popular in Bohemia in the 15th century. Without knowing the dating of the polyphony “neo-organ” piece Sanctus super Gaude quam magnificat, you would never say it was

Hymnus Veni Redemptor gencium 1. Veni, Redemptor gencium, ostende partum Virginis. Miretur omne speculum: talis decet partus Deum. 2. Equalis eterno Patri, carnis tropheo accingere, infirma nostri corporis virtute firmans perpeti. 7. Presepe iam fulget tuum lumenque nox spirat novum: quod nulla nox interpollet fideque iugi luceat.

Hymnus Veni, Redemptor gencium 1. Come, Redeemer of the nations, show the Virgin’s birth. Let all the world wonder: such a birth is fitting for God.

Hymnus Veni, Redemptor gencium 1.

2. Not from a man’s seed, but with mystic breath, the Word of God has been made flesh, and the fruit of the womb has flourished. 3. The Virgin’s stomach swells, the seal of chastity remains, the banners of the virtues shine, God is in his temple.

4. Coming forth from his bride-chamber, 4. S’avançant de son lit, de la cour royale de pudeur, comme un géant de substanc the royal hall of chastity, a giant of twin double, pour s’élancer, allègre, sur la voie substance, eager to run his road. 5. His coming forth from the Father, his return to the Father, the Highest to the underworld, the return to God’s seat.

6. Equal to the eternal Father, be girded with the trophy of flesh, fortifying the weaknesses of our body with perpetual strength. 7. Your manger now shines and night breathes out a new light: may no night interrupt it, and may it shine with endless faith.

8. To God the Father be glory, and to his only Son, with the Spirit, the Comforter, both now and forever.

Lectio Primo tempore Command, Lord, that we may be filled with your blessings and that we may benefit from the readings of the holy scripture. In the past the land of Zabulun and the land of Napthali was relieved. And most lately the way of the sea, of Galilee of the gentiles, across the Jordan, has been weighed down. Thus speaks the Lord: “Turn to me and you shall be saved.”

Lectio Iube Domine ‒ Consurge O Lord, send silence to the ears of those who listen, so they may perceive and so that you would give your blessing. Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: Thus speaks the Lord God: “Turn to me and you shall be saved.”

Benedicamen Nos respectu gracie We, in respect of grace the first-fruits of the nations, Give hope for a place of mercy To ourselves today. Hear, hear, hear us, merciful and pitying. Let the whole world rejoice to Christ who is born, the great king. Leader of Juda, whom the prophets had once foretold of old: behold, the renowned Son, rejoicing, comes to us at Bethlehem. Let the whole world rejoice to Christ who is born, the great king. Now the royal virgin mother, brings forth in childbirth, rejoicing, the one whom Gabriel announced, the saviour of the nations. Let the whole world rejoice to Christ who is born, the great king. Now the east blazes, now the signs run ahead, now the Lord comes to bring us light, alleluia.

Today a light will shine upon us, for the Lord is born for us; and he will be called Wondrous God,

Motet Exordium quadruplate ‒ Nate Dei ‒ Concrepet infanti ‒ Verbum caro Begin with four voices, through this motet chant sagaciously to announce what was prophesied, and to sing praise with good judgement, stand in good faith, and you will see as the Lord will kindly help you against them.

‒ Nate Dei, Dei memor est cleri mei, quoque rei, neumata nostra vehi facias, ubi summa trophei, spei, finis omnis quoque rei.

‒ Son of God, remember my clergy, and the sinner, too, let our song reach there where awaits the supreme reward and hope, and the end of all.

‒ Concrepet infanti nati de gurgite rivi vivi, vivi vox gentis, entis, mentis, modo mundi unde super vacue nocue cessant mage tute virtute.

‒ May the voice and the mind of this people worship the child born of the living spring, for thus the worthless trespasses of this world are certain soon to pass.

‒ Word is become flesh and shall reside in our midst. We saw the glory of Him, the only begotten Son of the Father, filled with grace and truth.
