Claudio Monteverdi had always made clear in his works, from the first through the eighth book of madrigals — the Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi that were published in 1638 — that polyphonic music had lost none of its dramatic usefulness; he also, however, uncontestably demonstrated the incomparable force of accompanied monody; the emotions of the soul and sensations of the body, even the most subtle, would be expressed in this style from this time onwards.

The voce sola, together with the accompaniment of the basso continuo, first appeared in his Quinto libro de’ madrigali (1605); here we have the first traces of Monteverdi’s use of accompanied monody.

His L’Orfeo was first performed in Mantua two years later in 1607; in comparison to earlier works in the genre — fully sung theatrical settings of Euridice in 1600 by Peri and by Caccini, the Florentine composers who had invented the recitar cantando — Monteverdi, at that time maestro di cappella to the Duke of Mantua, displayed an impressive mastery of the style. Not only had he understood everything about it, but he also far surpassed these first efforts, which finally should be regarded as preparatory and exploratory works in the genre. Monteverdi was able to polish away the style’s rough edges and to make it resonate and shine. If we for a moment adopt the terminology explained by Henri Focillon in his Vie des formes (1943), L’Orfeo belongs to a classic phase of the style, whilst Caccini and Peri’s 1600 versions belong to an archaic phase. If we continue this line of thought, the operas that Monteverdi composed towards the end of his life belong, together with those by his pupils and contemporaries, Cavalli included, to the third and final phase of Focillon’s concept, the baroque phase.

L’Orfeo is indeed a classic composition, to use the above terminology. This Favola in musica is simply the apotheosis of the Renaissance, the first great period of classicism in the history of music.

A work complete in itself, it also contains an unbelievable quantity of information about so many aspects of the work, from the instrumentation of the basso continuo to the dramatic function of the ritornelli, sinfonie and balletti. It is the sole work to give such a complete picture of a court theatrical performance of the time.

Whilst accompanied monody is the dominant style of L’Orfeo, polyphony nonetheless also plays an important role: vocal ensembles take a prominent part and have a clear theatrical function in this favola in musica, being reminiscent of the function of the chorus in Greek tragedy. We see this in the Nymphs and Shepherds of the acts set in the mortal world and in the Spirits of the acts set in Hades. Polyphony also provides a most impressive effect when it amplifies the Messenger’s cry of horror: Ahi caso acerbo, ahi fat’ empio e crudele. The polyphony reinforces the text, turning it into a cry repeated by all present, somewhat like a leitmotif before its time; it is even developed when the chorus of Nymphs and Shepherds takes it up after Orfeo has announced his imminent departure for Hell: Addio terra, addio, cielo e sole, addio.

Monteverdi employed all the subtleties that recitar cantando can command in the sections of L’Orfeo that were composed in accompanied monody, although certain expressions of emotion demand more than the style can provide; here the recitar cantando, acting through singing, is relaxed and becomes what was soon to be termed an aria. Two separate genres soon developed as a result: recitative, in which the plot was advanced, and the aria, in which the emotions generated by the events of the plot were expressed. Various intermediate genres between the recitative and the aria also existed at the beginning of the 17th century, all of which can be found in Monteverdi’s works a voce sola; they are to be found in both manuscript sources and in the publications that were made available for distribution in the years following the first performance of L’Orfeo.

A number of Monteverdi’s works were composed for particular voices, for the female singers who played such an important role in his musical life. These women were amongst the many musicians who had been invited to the Mantuan court to reinforce the Duke’s musical establishment; at that time it was said that if comparisons had to be made, the cappella of Mantua was more splendid even than that of Ferrara or even of Florence.

Claudia Cattaneo, one of the above singers, was the daughter of Giacomo Cattaneo, a violinist of the court. Monteverdi married Claudia in May 1599. Caterina Martinelli was clearly one of the Duke of Mantua’s favourite singers — indeed, he seems to have been madly in love with her — and she lodged with Monteverdi and his wife. Claudia, who had given birth to three children by

the time Monteverdi came to compose L’Orfeo, then fell mortally ill. She died on 10 September 1607, seven months after the premiere of the opera. We do not know whether either Claudia or Caterina took part in these performances of L’Orfeo: the majority of the soprano roles were sung by the castrato Giovanni Gualberto Magli, these being the roles of La Musica, Proserpina and possibly also La Speranza and La Messagiera. Only the small role of Euridice and perhaps a Nymph in Acts I and II could have been sung by Martinelli. We do know, however, that she sang the leading soprano role in Marco da Gagliano’s Daphne the following year, and that Monteverdi also composed the role of Arianna for her, with the intention that the eponymous opera would be performed in May 1608. Caterina Martinelli, however, died of smallpox on 9 March 1608, at the age of 18. The duke of Mantua commissioned Monteverdi to compose a homage to her in 1610: this was the cycle of madrigals that he would publish as La Sestina, Lagrime d’amante al sepolcro dell’amata in his sixth book of madrigals in 1614. The same volume also contains a polyphonic setting for five voices of the Lamento d’Arianna. We should not underestimate the effect that these two deaths must have had on Monteverdi; already exhausted after having composed and then presented L’Orfeo, he then found reserves of strength enough to compose two large-scale works that the Duke had commissioned for the marriage of his son Francesco Gonzaga in 1608: Arianna and Il Ballo delle ingrate. Monteverdi returned to Cremona to recover; it is saddening to read in in his letters to the Duke of his deep unhappiness at the lack of respect shown for his work, and at the small amount that he was being paid; this was much less that he deserved, especially given that there were others who were much better paid than he and who delivered much less.

This recording presents several of Monteverdi’s compositions a voce sola, both recitatives and arias.

The Prologo of L’Orfeo was originally sung by a castrato and is divided into five couplets. The Muse, descending from her beloved Parnassus, introduces herself and announces to those watching that she will evoke Orpheus, he who could summon savage beasts and bend Hades to his will through his song. This could almost be a strophic melody, except that it is built on a bass line that is varied rhythmically from couplet to couplet; the melody is treated almost as if it were a basis for

variation. Such variation is not simply melodic in character, but lies rather in the modification of certain musical elements and in the shifting of stresses. Monteverdi describes this exactly in the brief note he attached to the score in 1609: La declamazione sempre libera, segue il significato della parola perciò nel recitativi non si troveranno indicazioni di tempo, nè molti segni di espressione.

“The Lamento that Ariadne sings while on her rocky islet after having been abandoned by Theseus was particularly splendid; it was played and sung with such feeling and compassion that there was no listener who was not riven with pity. Ariadne’s lament moved all of the women present to tears”. This commentary on the performance of the Lamento d’Arianna appears in a document that describes the celebrations organised for the marriage of Francesco Gonzaga to Margaret of Savoy, vicereine of Portugal. A singer from Florence, Virginia Andreini, took over the role intended for Caterina Martinelli. The complete score of Monteverdi’s opera has not survived; all that we have is this tear-stained Lamento, published as a separate work since 1623. This lamentation was not, however, the finale of the opera; even though Ariadne prays for death, she is awakened by Bacchus in the following scene, who seduces her and then marries her. A happy ending was of course obligatory for a work being performed during a royal wedding!

The Lamento is neither recitative nor aria, nor a combination of both; it is simply a Lamento, a new genre that Monteverdi here established by composing a perfect example of one. This model would be copied and imitated throughout the 17th century, first of all by Monteverdi himself in the Lamento d’Olimpia (around 1620) and in Penelope’s great lament that opens Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, the opera that he composed for Venice in 1640.

As Monteverdi noted in the prologue to L’Orfeo, the text itself is the basis for everything. It is true that the recitative style tends to dominate when a large amount of text is intended to be sung on one note, the rhythm then taking over as the principal musical element present and creating what Monteverdi termed the stile concitato or combative style; we see this in the scene when Ariadne summons the winds, the storms and the waves to sink Theseus’ ship. Changes in harmony, sometimes astonishingly abrupt, also help the music to change its character. The true originality of this new genre, however, lies in the presence of passages of a more arioso character in which the vocal line

dwells on certain words and memories: the introduction Lasciatemi morire which, with its reprise, gives the impression of a miniature aria da capo; the invocation O Teseo, Teseo mio, employed several times in almost leitmotivic fashion; Ariadne’s expressions of self-pity with la povera Arianna and la misera Arianna; the description of her parents, whom she will never see again.

A brief phrase, light and dance-like in character, arrives at the start of the third section; it accompanies two lines in which Ariadne describes Theseus as he sets out with a light heart for Athens, where a joyous welcome is being prepared for him, and his destiny. Ariadne cries out in despair — et io piango — between these two short phrases of rejoicing. It is this change of affect, always driven by the text, that is the primary characteristic of this new genre. The version for five voices of the Lamento that appears in his sixth volume of madrigals consequently used the same technique of enlargement as Monteverdi would employ for the cry of La Messaggiera in L’Orfeo.

Monteverdi abandoned secular vocal music for a time when he left the Mantuan court to take up the position of maestro di cappella at St. Mark’s in Venice in 1613. Various publications soon began nonetheless to appear that contained collections of works of very different genres; these were titled Madrigali (the 7th and 8th books, published in 1619 and 1638 respectively) and Scherzi musicali (1632). It is extremely difficult to date the individual works in these volumes with any precision: some were of more recent date, whilst others, such as the Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda and the Ballo delle Ingrate, were composed much earlier, having been composed during Monteverdi’s time in Mantua.

There are several pieces for solo voice and continuo in his seventh book of madrigals. The most renowned of these is of course the Lettera amorosa a voce sola in genere rappresentativo, in which a lover addresses his beloved. Nonetheless, the vocal line is written in the soprano clef. The phrase in genere rappresentativo appears frequently in the two final books of madrigals and indicates that the piece concerned is not for concert performance but is a theatrical work and to be staged. Here we have a theatrical setting: the beloved receives the letter and reads it aloud in recitar cantando. Once again, depending on the affect sought by the composer, the melody is sometimes almost spoken, sometimes an arioso. In any case, the beloved is required to follow Monteverdi’s instruction placed directly after

the work’s title: e si canta senza battuta. A second piece of the same type, entitled Partenza amorosa, appears later in the same volume. Written in the tenor clef, it is clearly the letter that the lover himself is in the process of writing.

One of the particularities of his seventh book, entitled Concerto / Settimo libro de madrigali, is the presence of several pieces for two voices that are composed in a simpler style. One of these is Ohimé, dov’è il mio ben, whose four couplets are constructed as variations for two voices on the romanesca bass line; this particular theme was also to be used in a great number of instrumental works during the first half of the 17th century.

A smaller volume of pieces for solo voice and continuo appeared in 1632. One of the pieces it contained was the renowned Zefiro torna for two tenors set to a ciaccona bass; another was the important but much lesser known Et è pur dunque vero. This piece for solo voice is unusual in that it contains a ritornello for an unspecified melody instrument; its division into seven couplets is also highly individual. The same bass line underpins the seven ritornelli and couplets; the structure of each couplet is also identical: lively in character and seemingly positive at the start, the mood of each couplet gradually darkens, becoming more and more desolate. Each ritornello is more ornamented than the last and seems to represent a release of new energy, through which the rejected lover attempts to regain some hope. Here we have a lover who proclaims his despair; his darkest moods are not to be dispersed and drive him into the depths. Despite the narrator clearly being male — he names his beloved as Lydia and laments the stupidity of all those who put their trust in women — the piece is written in the C clef, therefore for soprano, so presumably for a castrato.

Given that the very idea of copyright did not exist at that period, certain publishers frequently took the liberty of assembling and printing anthologies of individual works by several composers.

One such case was the volume published by Alessandro Vicenti in 1634, in which we find Ohimé ch’io cado, clearly an aria in all but name. Its six couplets are varied in succession over a bass line, this in turn being characterised by a continuous sequence of crotchets that gives the piece an undeniable jazz-like swing. The text describes the feelings of a man, all of whose love affairs end badly; the ostinato character of the bass line seems to state with a certain amount of humour that the situation

will never change. The continual movement of the bass line only ceases towards the end of the final couplet, giving way to an arioso conclusion as the disillusioned lover calls for his prison to become a paradise. We should note here that the ritornelli here have no written out melodic line; Given the character of the piece, the continuo instruments were perfectly capable of creating one themselves.

Vicenti also lists his continuo instruments on the volume’s title page: “harpsichord, chitarrone, double harp as well any similar instrument, or the Spanish guitar or similar”.

The celebrated Lamento della Ninfa is located in the eighth book of madrigals (1638) and had been conceived as a piece for theatrical performance. A group of three singers (two tenors and one bass) announce the arrival of a lachrymose Nymph and then, somewhat in the manner of a modern radio or tv presenter, interrupt her song with a few remarks, finally concluding that it is Love that can so mix ice and fire in lovers’ hearts. Here the Lamento form has nothing in common with the dramatic recitative of Arianna and the Lettera amorosa; this is an aria accompanied by an ostinato bass made up of a descending tetrachord, a passacaglia bass.

The youthful beloved sings of her despair in an aria accompanied by this bass line. There is only one topic involved here, the pain of abandonment; one affect alone is enough to express this, whilst the obsessive repetition of the passacaglia bass ensures a continual increase of musical expression.

Given that this is clearly a piece for theatrical performance, Monteverdi insists that the introduction and the conclusion of the piece should be sung in strict time, whilst the lament itself can be sung as the emotions of the piece dictate, “a tempo dell’affetto del animo e non a quello de la mano”.

This Lamento is preceded by Perchè se m’odiavi, a piece for three male voices that appeared only in 1651, after Monteverdi’s death; it was included with other works that had remained unpublished until then in a volume entitled Madrigali e Canzonette. This piece is the complete opposite of a Lamento, for in it the three characters complain of the cruel Phyllis, describing her haughtiness and cold-heartedness.

L’incoronazione di Poppea was first performed at the start of 1643; Monteverdi himself was to die on 29 November of that same year. As we know, the opera was composed in the new Venetian style that had begun its evolution in 1637 and in which many composers soon shone; one of these was

Francesco Cavalli, Monteverdi’s leading pupil. Monteverdi had never completely abandoned opera and was greatly attracted by the idea of making his own contributions to this new genre. Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria was composed in 1640; this was followed by two other works that tragically have not survived, and then by L’incoronazione di Poppea.

Monteverdi, now at the end of his life, delivered a masterpiece. Not only had he completely understood the development of the theatrical language of the time, but his style had also evolved and his mastery of dramatic and human expression had taken a completely new turn. The classicism that we described earlier has disappeared, having been replaced by a Baroque fast-reacting sensitivity of expression that is lively, full of contrasts, dramatic and sometimes unexpected. Ottavia’s monologue — in which the spurned Empress vents her anger, bewails her sad fate and then curses Jupiter for being powerless to avenge her before falling into the depths of sorrow — is one of the most impressive examples of this style.

Several of Monteverdi’s works have, however, survived unpublished in manuscript form. The Biblioteca dei Filippini in Naples holds the sole existing copy of Voglio di vita uscir. Once again, we have a text that describes the disappointments of love. Chi parla? A man, or a woman? The soprano clef indicates that a high voice is required. The only clue provided by the text is A Dio crudel, implying that a cruel male is responsible for the singer’s despair. Jean-François Lattarico, the translator of the Italian text into French here, notes that the omission of the unstressed vowel (crudel instead of crudele) causes him to favour the masculine object, thereby confirming the soprano clef. He adds that the piece could, however, have been sung by a castrato; on the other hand, there are also poems of the period, by Marino in particular, that are explicitly addressed to men. One of the beauties of this repertoire is that it relies on a lack of sexual differentiation.

This being said, the setting itself is highly unusual. It uses a ciaccona bass and therefore is rhythmically active; the bass line leads the voice through garlands of elaborate vocalises that seem to be very distant from the painful emotions expressed in the text. All motion suddenly ceases, as can life itself. A basso ostinato, a passacaglia, appears at the moment when death is explicitly mentioned in the text: S’apre la tomba, il mio morir t’annuncio. We do not know exactly when this piece was

composed, although it is tempting to place it in Monteverdi’s final years, the time of his last operas.

Benedetto Ferrari, one of the first composers to adopt the genre of Venetian opera, and one of the musicians who collaborated with Monteverdi on Poppea — its final duo, Pur ti miro, is attributed to him — published a volume of works for solo voice in 1637. Ferrari there sets the same text, and also to a ciaccona bass, although he does not change the mood of the music throughout the piece. The vocal line continues, imperturbably accompanied by the ciaccona; it is only at the very end, on the last line, that the ostinato bass ceases and makes way for a snatch of recitative. Monteverdi’s setting, however, leads us much further beyond.

LETTERA AMOROSA  Si, par son œuvre, Claudio Monteverdi n’a cessé d’affirmer – et ce, jusqu’au Huitième Livre de madrigaux, édité à la fin de sa vie, en 1638 – que la musique polyphonique n’avait pas perdu de son efficacité dramatique, il fut aussi celui qui confirma de façon indiscutable la force inégalable de la monodie accompagnée, dès lors qu’il fallait exprimer les sentiments les plus subtils de l’âme et les ressentis du corps.

La voce sola, associée au soutien de la basse continue, est apparue dans le Cinquième Livre de madrigaux (1605) ; ce sont là les premières traces de l’emploi de la monodie accompagnée dans l’œuvre de Claudio Monteverdi. Deux ans plus tard, en 1607, son Orfeo est créé à Mantoue ; par rapport à tous ses prédécesseurs, ceux qui, à Florence principalement, ont inventé le recitar cantando et ont imaginé des pièces de théâtre entièrement chantées (les Euridice de Peri et Caccini, en 1600), le maître de chapelle du duc de Mantoue s’impose avec une maestria impressionnante. Non seulement il a tout compris, mais surtout, il sublime ces premières œuvres du genre, que l’on considère finalement comme des projets préparatoires ; il arrive à polir le matériel encore assez brut, à le faire vibrer, à le faire refléter la lumière. Pour reprendre un instant le concept d’Henri Focillon exposé dans Vie des formes (1943), L’Orfeo peut se définir comme une phase « classique », alors que les Euridice de Caccini et de Peri (1600) appartiendraient à une phase « archaïque ». Et pour suivre ce raisonnement, les opéras de la fin de la vie de Monteverdi (et ceux de ses disciples et contemporains, comme Cavalli), avec l’exacerbation de l’expression des sentiments, correspondent à la troisième phase décrite par l’esthéticien, celle qu’il considère comme « baroque ».

Oui, L’Orfeo est bien une composition « classique ». Cette Favola in musica est avant tout l’apothéose de la Renaissance, la première grande période classique de l’histoire de la musique. Œuvre complète – elle est d’ailleurs le seul témoignage aussi complet des spectacles de cour à cette époque –, elle nous donne une quantité incroyable d’informations sur de très nombreux aspects, qu’il s’agisse de l’instrumentation de la basse continue, du rôle dramatique des ritornelli, sinfonie et balletti…

Si la monodie accompagnée y est le style dominant, la polyphonie conserve son importance, car dans cette fable en musique – est-ce un rappel des chœurs des tragédies grecques ? –, les ensembles vocaux ont une place primordiale, avec même une fonction théâtrale évidente : c’est le cas des Nymphes et Bergers dans les actes terrestres et des Esprits dans les actes infernaux. Cela n’est-il pas encore plus impressionnant lorsque la polyphonie vient amplifier le cri d’effroi de la Messagère, « Ahi caso acerbo, ahi fat’empio e crudele » (Hélas, sort cruel, hélas, implacable et funeste destinée) ?

La polyphonie renforce le texte, en fait un cri de foule qui se répète (comme un leitmotiv avant la lettre), et même se développe lorsque le chœur des Nymphes et Bergers s’en empare après qu’Orfée ait annoncé son départ pour les enfers : « Addio terra, addio, cielo e sole, addio ».

Dans toutes les parties de L’Orfeo qui sont écrites selon le principe de la monodie accompagnée, Monteverdi a utilisé toutes les facettes de cet art subtil du recitar cantando. Certes, il s’agit bien de « réciter en chantant », mais l’expression des passions ne peut se contenter de ce seul principe ; il faut aussi que la ligne s’assouplisse pour devenir ce que l’on nommera « aria ». Ainsi se développeront deux genres principaux : le récitatif, qui fait avancer l’action, et l’air, qui permet d’exprimer les sentiments.

Et entre les deux se trouvent, en ce début du XVIIe siècle, de nombreux genres intermédiaires. Tous ces genres se retrouvent dans le répertoire a voce sola dispersé dans plusieurs sources éditées ou manuscrites d’œuvres de Claudio Monteverdi et réparties dans les années qui suivent la création de L’Orfeo.

Certaines de ces compositions sont associées à des voix, à celles de ces femmes qui ont joué un rôle si important dans la vie du compositeur. Ce sont avant tout des chanteuses qui faisaient partie des nombreux musiciens invités à la cour de Mantoue pour enrichir l’effectif de la chapelle musicale du duc, qui se devait d’être la plus somptueuse en comparaison avec les cours concurrentes de Ferrare et de Florence !

Parmi ces artistes, Claudia Cattaneo est la fille de l’un des violistes de la cour, Giacomo Cattaneo.

Claudio et Claudia se marient en mai 1599. Caterina Martinelli, certainement l’une des chanteuses préférées du duc (qui en est, semble-t-il, éperdument amoureux), est logée chez les jeunes époux. À l’époque où Monteverdi écrit L’Orfeo, Claudia, qui lui a donné trois enfants, est gravement malade.

Elle décède le 10 septembre 1607, sept mois après la création de la Favola in musica. Claudia ne semble pas avoir chanté dans L’Orfeo, et on ne sait pas non plus si Caterina y a participé. Une grande partie des rôles de soprano ont d’ailleurs été chantés par le castrat Giovanni Gualberto Magli : La Musica, Proserpine et peut-être le rôle de La Speranza, ou même celui de La Messagiera. Seul le rôle fragile et ténu d’Euridice et peut-être quelques interventions des Nymphes dans les actes I et II pourraient avoir été chantés par Caterina. Mais c’est bien elle qui, l’année suivante, chante le rôle principal de soprano dans Daphne de Marco da Gagliano, et c’est bien pour elle que Monteverdi écrit le rôle d’Arianna qui doit être créé en mai 1608. Mais le 9 mars 1608, Caterina est emportée par une épidémie de variole, à l’âge de 18 ans. À la demande du duc, Monteverdi écrira un hommage à Caterina en 1610 : il s’agit du cycle de madrigaux qu’il fera éditer dans le Sixième Livre de madrigaux en 1614 sous le titre de La Sestina, Lagrime d’amante al sepolcro dell’amata (Larmes de l’amant sur la tombe de l’aimée). C’est dans le même recueil que se trouve la version polyphonique à cinq voix du Lamento d’Arianna. On ne peut sous-estimer l’impact que ces deux décès ont eu dans l’esprit du compositeur ; épuisé après la création de L’Orfeo, c’est avec une force inouïe qu’il écrit les deux grandes œuvres commandées par le duc pour le mariage de son fils Francesco Gonzague en 1608 : Arianna et Il Ballo dell’Ingrate. On peine à imaginer que durant ces moments pénibles, ainsi qu’en témoignent quelques lettres adressées à son patron depuis Crémone où il est en convalescence, Monteverdi doive se plaindre du peu de respect témoigné pour son travail, et surtout du montant de sa rémunération, bien moindre que ce à quoi il pourrait prétendre, d’autant plus que d’autres (pour moins de résultats) sont mieux payés que lui…

Le programme de cet enregistrement réunit quelques compositions a voce sola de Claudio Monteverdi, récitatifs et airs.

Le Prologo de L’Orfeo (qui fut chanté par un castrat) est réparti en cinq couplets. La Muse, descendant de son « Permesse aimé », se présente et annonce aux spectateurs qu’elle va évoquer Orphée qui, « par son chant, attira les bêtes féroces et fit céder l’Enfer par ses prières ». Sommes-nous en présence d’un air strophique ? Presque. Sur une basse qui, de couplet en couplet, se développe avec quelques variantes (principalement rythmiques), la mélodie est en quelque sorte traitée sous forme

de variations. Non pas des variations simplement mélodiques, mais plutôt dans la modification de certains éléments, dans le déplacement d’appuis. Monteverdi l’explique très bien dans la petite note qu’il joint à la partition dans l’édition en 1609 : « La declamazione sempre libera, segue il significato della parola perciò nel recitativi non si troveranno indicazioni di tempo, nè molti segni di espressione » (la déclamation toujours libre doit suivre le sens des paroles parce que dans les récitatifs, il n’existe pas d’indication de tempo ni aucun signe pour l’expression). « Le Lamento que chante Ariane sur son rocher, quand elle a été abandonnée par Thésée, fut particulièrement miraculeux et joué avant tant de sentiment et de compassion qu’il ne s’est trouvé aucun auditeur pour n’être alors apitoyé et que toutes les dames présentes laissèrent tomber leurs larmes à cette plainte. » Ce commentaire sur la représentation du Lamento d’Arianna se trouve dans un document qui relate, dès 1608, les festivités du mariage de Francesco Gonzague avec l’infante marguerite de Savoie. C’est une chanteuse florentine, Virginia Andreini, qui reprit le rôle écrit pour Caterina Martinelli. Qu’est devenue la partition du nouvel opéra de Monteverdi ? On n’en sait rien.

Seul ce Lamento, qui a fait verser tant de larmes, a survécu et a été édité séparément dès 1623. Cette plainte d’Ariane n’était pas la fin de l’opéra : même si Ariane appelle la mort, à la scène suivante elle se réveille et se laisse séduire par Bacchus, qui l’épouse ; il fallait bien un dénouement heureux pour cet ouvrage représenté à l’occasion d’un mariage princier ! À quel genre appartient le Lamento ?

Récitatif ? Aria ? Ni l’un ni l’autre, ou l’un et l’autre. C’est tout simplement un genre nouveau, celui du « lamento », que Monteverdi établit ici en en donnant un modèle parfait qui sera copié et imité durant tout le XVIIe siècle, à commencer par Monteverdi lui-même dans le Lamento d’Olimpia (vers 1620) ou dans le grand lamento de Penelope qui ouvre Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, son opéra écrit pour Venise en 1640. Comme il le signalait pour le prologue de L’Orfeo, c’est le texte qui construit tout. Certes, le genre du récitatif domine parfois avec une grande vivacité dans le débit du texte sur une seule note (c’est ici le rythme qui est l’élément musical principal), pour en arriver déjà à ce que Monteverdi appellera le « stile concitato » (le style de combat), lorsqu’Ariane appelle les vents, les orages et les vagues pour engloutir le vaisseau de Thésée. Les changements d’harmonie parfois assez abrupts aident aussi aux changements de caractère. Mais ce qui fait l’originalité de ce nouveau

genre, c’est la présence permanente de passages plus arioso dans lesquels la voix s’étend sur certains mots, certains souvenirs : l’introduction « Lasiate mi morire » qui, avec sa reprise, apparaît comme un embryon d’aria da capo, les invocations « O Teseo, Teseo mio » qui reviennent à plusieurs reprises (toujours cette notion de leitmotiv ?), la plainte d’Ariane sur elle-même, « la povera Arianna », « la misera Arianna », l’évocation de ses parents qu’elle ne verra plus…

Au début de la troisième section survient tout à coup une petite phrase légère et dansante qui soutient deux vers dans lesquels Ariane évoque Thésée partant le cœur léger vers son destin et Athènes, qui se prépare à lui réserver un accueil fastueux ; entre ces deux brèves phrases joyeuses, un cri lamentable, celui d’Ariane : « et io piango » (et moi je pleure). C’est cette diversité des affects, constamment liés au texte, qui fait la caractéristique essentielle de ce nouveau genre montéverdien.

La version à cinq voix éditée dans le Sixième Livre de madrigaux illustre finalement le même principe amplificateur que celui qui a été utilisé dans L’Orfeo pour le cri de la Messagiera.

On peut voir la cause de l’abandon provisoire par Monteverdi de la musique vocale profane dans son entrée en fonction comme maître de chapelle à San Marco de Venise en 1613, lorsqu’il quitte la cour de Mantoue. Néanmoins, c’est sous la forme de diverses éditions que, peu à peu, apparaissent des collections de compositions de genres très différents qui portent les titres de Madrigali (ce seront les VIIe et VIIIe livres en 1619 et en 1638) ou de Scherzi Musicali (1632). Il est souvent bien difficile de dater les compositions qui figurent dans ces recueils ; si certaines sont récentes, d’autres, comme le Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda et Il Ballo delle Ingrate, sont bien antérieures et remontent, comme le Ballo, à la période de Mantoue.

Dans le Septième Livre de madrigaux se trouvent quelques pièces à voix seule. La plus célèbre est évidemment la Lettera amorosa a voce sola in genere rappresentativo. Ici, l’amant s’adresse à sa bienaimée. Et cependant, la partition est écrite en clé de soprano. Acceptons donc la notion de « genere rappresentativo », caractéristique des deux derniers livres de madrigaux ; cette musique n’appartient pas qu’au concert, elle est aussi destinée à être vue. La scène est évidente, nous sommes au théâtre.

La bien-aimée reçoit cette lettre, la lit en « recitar cantado ». À nouveau, selon les affects, la mélodie est quasi parlée, parfois arioso. En tout cas, la bien-aimée suit l’indication ajoutée au titre, « e si canta

senza battuta » (et cela se chante sans battue [de mesure]). Plus loin dans le même recueil se trouve une autre pièce du genre, intitulée Partenza amorosa. Composée en clé de ténor, la lettre est bien celle que l’amant est en train d’écrire…

L’une des particularités du Septième Livre, qui porte aussi le titre de Concerto, c’est la présence de nombreuses pièces en duo qui appartiennent d’une façon plus simple au domaine de l’air. C’est le cas d’Ohimé, dov’è il mio ben, dont les quatre couplets sont construits comme des variations en duo sur la basse de la romanesca, motif qui servit à tant de compositions instrumentales de la première moitié du XVIIe siècle.

En 1632 paraît un petit recueil de pièces à voix seule (mais qui contient aussi le très célèbre Zefiro torna à deux ténors sur une basse de ciaconna). C’est ici que l’on trouve une autre composition importante mais moins connue : Et è pur dunque vero. Cette pièce à voix seule a la particularité de posséder une ritournelle pour un instrument mélodique non précisé. La construction de la pièce en sept couplets est tout à fait remarquable. C’est la même basse qui soutient les sept ritournelles et couplets et la structure de chaque couplet est identique : agile, le sentiment, plutôt positif au départ, devient progressivement plus alangui pour aller vers une expression de plus en plus douloureuse.

Chaque ritournelle, de plus en plus ornementée, peut apparaître comme l’expression d’une énergie nouvelle dans laquelle l’amant éconduit tente de retrouver l’espoir. Il est bien question d’un amant qui évoque son désespoir amoureux et ne cesse de sombrer dans les pensées les plus noires qui le conduisent vers les abysses et les enfers. À nouveau, on est face aux sentiments d’un homme (il cite un instant Lydia et évoque la stupidité de ceux qui croient en la femme), mais la pièce est écrite en clé d’ut I, donc pour soprano. Évidemment, pourquoi pas un castrat ?

Comme c’était fréquemment le cas à cette époque où la notion de droits d’auteur n’existait pas, certains éditeurs prenaient la liberté d’imprimer des anthologies qui réunissaient des compositions éparses de divers compositeurs. C’est le cas de la publication réalisée par Alessandro Vicenti en 1634, dans laquelle on trouve Ohimé ch’io cado, pièce que l’on peut sans aucun doute considérer comme un air. Six couplets se développent (varient) sur une basse caractérisée par une suite incessante de noires qui donnent à cette pièce le caractère de ce que l’on appellera dans le jazz le « swing ». Le texte qui

exprime les sentiments d’un homme évoque la répétition des échecs amoureux ; le caractère obstiné de la basse accentue la permanence de ces sentiments, avec même une certaine dose d’humour. Ce n’est qu’à la fin du dernier couplet que cette basse de noires s’arrête, laissant la place à une conclusion arioso lorsque l’amant désabusé appelle à ce que sa prison devienne le paradis. Notons ici que les passages de ritornelli ne comportent pas de partie pour instrument mélodique. Vu le caractère de la pièce, les instruments de la basse continue peuvent faire cela parfaitement. D’ailleurs, Vicenti cite ces instruments dans le titre du recueil : « … clavecin, chitarrone, harpe double et tout autre instrument de même type, ou à la guitare espagnole… » C’est dans le Huitième Livre de madrigaux (1638) que se trouve le célèbre Lamento della Ninfa. La pièce est conçue comme une pièce représentative. Un groupe de trois chanteurs (deux ténors et une basse) annonce l’arrivée de la Nymphe en pleurs, puis, un peu à la manière de nos commentateurs de radio ou de télévision, ponctuent son chant de quelques observations et, enfin, concluent que « c’est ainsi que dans le cœurs des amants Amour mêle la glace et le feu ». Ici, le lamento n’a plus rien à voir avec le style du récitatif dramatique d’Arianna ou de la Lettera. Nous sommes bien en présence d’un air soutenu par une basse obstinée constituée par un tétracorde descendant, en fait une basse de passacaglio.

C’est sur le soutien de cette basse que ce développe cette aria dans laquelle la jeune amante chante son désespoir. Il n’est plus question ici que d’une seule chose, la douleur de l’abandon, et pour cela, un seul affect suffit et la répétition obsessionnelle de la basse de passacaille en accentue à l’infini l’expression. Pour cette pièce qui appartient évidemment au genre représentatif, Monteverdi insiste sur le fait que l’introduction et la conclusion doivent être chantées en mesure battue, alors que la plainte elle-même doit être chantée selon le mouvement des sentiments, « a tempo dell’affetto del animo e non a quello de la mano ».

Nous avons fait précéder ce lamento d’une pièce à trois voix d’homme, Perchè se m’odiavi, qui fut publiée après le décès de Monteverdi, en 1651, dans un recueil de Madrigali e Canzonette réunissant quelques compositions jusque-là inédites. C’est le sujet inverse du lamento, puisque nos trois comparses se plaignent de la cruelle Filli, altière, féroce…

C’est au début de 1643 – Monteverdi décède peu de temps après le 29 novembre – qu’est créé L’incoronazzione di Poppea. On le sait, cet opéra appartient au nouveau genre vénitien qui s’est développé à partir de 1637 et dans lequel ont brillé divers compositeurs, dont son principal disciple Francesco Cavalli. Monteverdi, qui n’a finalement jamais abandonné le théâtre musical, a été séduit par cette opportunité d’apporter sa propre contribution au genre nouveau. Après Ulisse en 1640, deux autres ouvrages, hélas ! perdus, voient le jour.

La leçon du vieux maître est imposante. Non seulement il a tout compris de l’évolution du langage théâtral, mais, de plus, son style a évolué et sa maîtrise de l’expression dramatique et humaine a pris une tout autre tournure. On est passé de ce « classicisme » évoqué plus haut à l’expression à fleur de peau, vive, contrastée, dramatique, parfois imprévue du « baroque ». Le monologue d’Ottavia durant lequel l’impératrice répudiée hurle sa colère, plaint son triste sort, évoque avec fureur l’impuissance de Jupiter à la venger et s’effondre enfin dans la plus grande désolation en est l’un des exemples les plus impressionnants. À côté des œuvres éditées, certaines compositions de Monteverdi sont également conservées en manuscrits. C’est à la Biblioteca dei Filippini de Naples que l’on trouve l’unique copie de Voglio di vita urscir. Une fois de plus, voici un texte qui appartient à cette abondante littérature de l’évocation des déceptions amoureuses. Chi parla? Un homme ? Une femme ? À nouveau, la clé de soprano indique une voix aiguë. La seule indication serait « A Dio crudel ». Ce serait donc « un » cruel responsable de ce désespoir. Mais, comme le fait remarquer Jean-François Lattarico, qui a réalisé la traduction française de ce texte : « L’apocope de l’adjectif (“crudel” plutôt que “crudele”) me fait pencher pour un masculin, ce que confirme la clé de soprano. Mais cela aurait pu aussi être chanté par un castrat. On connaît en revanche des poèmes, de Marino notamment, explicitement adressés à des hommes, ce n’est pas rare... C’est la beauté de ce répertoire de miser sur l’indifférenciation sexuelle. » Ceci étant dit, la composition est surprenante. C’est une basse de ciaconna (donc avec un rythme animé) qui entraîne la voix dans des méandres de vocalises virtuoses qui semblent bien loin des sentiments douloureux du texte. Mais soudain tout s’arrête, comme la vie peut s’arrêter brusquement.

Revoici un ostinato de passacaglia au moment où le texte évoque la mort d’une façon plus évidente :

« S’apre la tomba, il mio morir t’annuncio » (S’ouvre le tombeau, je t’annonce ma mort). De quand date cette pièce ? De la dernière période, de celle des derniers opéras ? En 1637, Benedetto Ferrari, l’un des premiers compositeurs de l’opéra vénitien, l’un des musiciens qui aurait été le collaborateur de Monteverdi pour la composition de Poppea, à qui on attribue même le duo final « Pur ti miro », édite un recueil de pièces à voix seule. Le même texte y est mis en musique, également sur une basse de ciaconna. Mais chez Ferrari, ce changement de caractère n’arrive pas. La voix continue, imperturbablement accompagnée par la ciaconna ; ce n’est qu’à l’extrême fin, sur le dernier vers, que la basse obstinée s’arrête pour laisser place à un très bref récitatif. Le sublime Claudio nous conduit bien au-delà…

Zwar bewies Claudio Monteverdi – bis zu seinem Achten Madrigalbuch, das 1638 gegen Ende seines Lebens veröffentlicht wurde – unentwegt durch sein Schaffen, dass die polyphone Musik nichts von ihrer dramatischen Effizienz verloren hatte, doch gleichzeitig war er derjenige, der in unbestreitbarer Weise die unvergleichliche Wirksamkeit der begleiteten Monodie bestätigte, wenn es galt, die subtilsten Gefühle der Seele und die Empfindungen des Körpers auszudrücken.

Die voce sola, der die Unterstützung des Basso continuos beigefügt wurde, tauchte im Fünften Madrigalbuch (1605) als erste Spur der Verwendung der begleiteten Monodie im Werk Claudio Monteverdis auf. Zwei Jahre später, nämlich 1607, wurde sein Orfeo in Mantua uraufgeführt.

Seinen Vorgängern gegenüber, die vor allem in Florenz das Recitar cantando eingeführt und zur Gänze gesungene Theaterstücke erfunden hatten (die beiden Euridice von Peri und Caccini, 1600), setzt sich der Kapellmeister des Herzogs von Mantua mit eindrucksvoller Meisterschaft durch.

Er hatte nicht nur alles verstanden, sondern ging vor allem über diese ersten Werke der Gattung hinaus, so dass diese nun als vorbereitende Projekte betrachtet werden. Ihm gelang es, das noch recht rohe Material auszufeilen, es zum Vibrieren, zum Reflektieren des Lichts zu bringen. Nach dem Konzept Henri Focillons, das in Vie des formes (1943) dargelegt wird, kann L’Orfeo als eine „klassische“ Phase definiert werden, während die beiden Euridice von Caccini und Peri (1600) einer „archaischen“ Phase angehören. Will man diesem Gedankengang folgen, entsprechen die Opern aus der letzten Lebenszeit Monteverdis (und die seiner Schüler und Zeitgenossen wie Cavalli) mit ihrem gesteigerten Ausdruck der Gefühle der dritten, von diesem Ästhetiker beschriebenen Phase, die er als „barock“ betrachtet.

Ja, L’Orfeo ist tatsächlich eine „klassische“ Komposition. Diese Favola in musica ist in erster Linie die Apotheose der Renaissance, die erste große klassische Periode in der Musikgeschichte. Das Werk ist vollständig – übrigens das einzige so vollständige Zeugnis der höfischen Aufführungen dieser Zeit – und erteilt uns eine unglaubliche Vielfalt an Informationen über sehr zahlreiche Aspekte,

ob es sich um die Instrumentierung des Basso continuo handelt oder um die dramatische Rolle der Ritornelle, Sinfonie und Balletti Zwar ist die begleitete Monodie darin der dominante Stil, doch behält die Polyphonie ihre Bedeutung, denn in dieser musikalischen Fabel spielen die Vokalensembles eine entscheidende Rolle (ist dies ein Anklang an die Chöre der griechischen Tragödien?): Das ist der Fall der Nymphen und Hirten in den irdischen Akten und der Geister in den Akten der Unterwelt. Ist es nicht noch eindrucksvoller, wenn die Polyphonie den Entsetzensschrei der Botin „Ahi caso acerbo, ahi fat’empio e crudele“ („Ach, grausames Los, ach, unerbittliches und verhängnisvolles Schicksal“) intensiviert?

Die Polyphonie verstärkt den Text, d.h. einen Schrei der Menge, der sich wiederholt (als wäre hier das Konzept des Leitmotivs vorweggenommen) und sich sogar weiterentwickelt, wenn der Chor der Nymphen und Hirten ihn übernimmt, nachdem Orpheus seine Reise in die Unterwelt angekündigt hat: „Addio terra, addio, cielo e sole, addio“ („Leb wohl, Erde, lebt wohl, Himmel und Sonne, lebt wohl“).

In allen Teilen von L’Orfeo, die nach dem Prinzip der begleiteten Monodie geschrieben sind, verwendete Monteverdi alle Facetten dieser subtilen Kunst des Recitar cantando. Sicher handelt es sich darum, tatsächlich „singend zu rezitieren“, doch kann sich der Ausdruck der Leidenschaften nicht nur mit diesem Prinzip zufriedengeben. Die Linie muss auch geschmeidiger werden, um zu dem zu werden, was „Aria“ genannt werden sollte. So entwickelten sich zwei Hauptgattungen: das Rezitativ, durch das die Handlung angetrieben wird, und die Arie, die zum Ausdruck der Gefühle dient.

Zwischen den beiden gibt es zu Beginn des 17. Jh. viele Zwischengattungen. Alle diese Gattungen finden sich im Repertoire a voce sola, das in verschiedenen veröffentlichten oder handschriftlichen Quellen der Werke Claudio Monteverdis verstreut und auf die Jahre nach der Uraufführung von L’Orfeo aufgeteilt ist.

Einige dieser Kompositionen sind für bestimmte Stimmen geschrieben, u.zw. für die der Frauen, die eine so wichtige Rolle im Leben des Komponisten spielten. Es handelt sich vor allem um Sängerinnen, die zu den zahlreichen, an den Hof von Mantua eingeladenen Musikern gehörten, um die Besetzungen der Musikkapelle des Herzogs zu bereichern, denn sie sollte im Vergleich zu den konkurrierenden Höfen von Ferrara und Florenz die prächtigste sein!

Unter diesen Künstlern befand sich Claudia Cattaneo, die Tochter eines der Gambisten des Hofes, Giacomo Cattaneo. Claudio und Claudia heirateten im Mai 1599. Caterina Martinelli, die sicher eine der Lieblingssängerinnen des (anscheinend sehr in sie verliebten) Herzogs war, wohnte bei dem jungen Paar. Als Monteverdi L’Orfeo schrieb, war Claudia, die ihm drei Kinder geschenkt hatte, schwer krank.

Sie starb am 10. September 1607 sieben Monate nach der Uraufführung der Favola in musica. Claudia sang anscheinend nicht in L’Orfeo und es ist auch nicht bekannt, ob Caterina daran teilnahm. Ein Großteil der Sopranrollen wurde übrigens vom Kastraten Giovanni Gualberto Magli interpretiert: La Musica, Proserpina und vielleicht die Rolle von La Speranza oder sogar die von La Messagiera. Nur die heikle, zarte Rolle der Euridice und vielleicht einige Passagen der Nymphen im 1. und 2. Akt könnten von Caterina gesungen worden sein. Doch übernahm sie im darauffolgenden Jahr die Hauptrolle des Soprans in Daphne von Marco da Gagliano, und für sie schrieb Monteverdi die Rolle der Arianna, die 1608 uraufgeführt werden sollte. Doch am 9. März 1608 wurde Caterina mit 18 Jahren von einer Pockenepidemie hinweggerafft. Auf die Bitte des Herzogs hin, schrieb Monteverdi 1610 eine Hommage auf Caterina: Es handelt sich um den Madrigalzyklus, den er im Sechsten Madrigalbuch 1614 unter dem Titel La Sestina, Lagrime d’amante al sepolcro dell’amata (Tränen des Geliebten am Grab der Geliebten) veröffentlichen ließ. Im selben Band befindet sich die fünfstimmige polyphone Fassung des Lamento d’Arianna. Die Auswirkung dieser beiden Todesfälle auf die Psyche des Komponisten darf man nicht unterschätzen. Nach der Uraufführung von L’Orfeo erschöpft, schreibt er mit ungeheurer Kraft die beiden großen Werke, zu denen er vom Herzog für die Hochzeit seines Sohnes Francesco Gonzaga 1608 den Auftrag erhielt: Arianna und Il Ballo dell’Ingrate. Es ist schwer sich vorzustellen, dass sich Monteverdi in dieser schwierigen Zeit, wie seine Briefe bezeugen, die er aus Cremona, wo er sich zur Genesung befindet, bei seinem Arbeitgeber beklagen muss, dass man ihm nur wenig Achtung für seine Arbeit zollt und vor allem, dass sein Gehalt gering ist, viel geringer als das, worauf er Anspruch hätte, und dies umso mehr, als andere (für weniger Resultate) besser bezahlt werden als er ...

Das Programm dieser Aufnahme stellt einige von Monteverdis Kompositionen à voce sola, Rezitative und Arien zusammen.

Die Muse, die von ihrem „geliebten Permessos“ herabsteigt, stellt sich vor und kündet dem Publikum an, dass sie die Geschichte des Orpheus erzählen werde, der „durch seinen Gesang die wilden Tiere anzog und durch seine Bitten die Unterwelt zum Nachgeben bewegte“. Liegt hier eine Strophenarie vor? Fast. Über einem Bass der sich von Strophe zu Strophe mit einigen (vor allem rhythmischen) Varianten entwickelt, wird die Melodie gewissermaßen in der Form von Variationen behandelt.

Dabei handelt es sich aber nicht nur um einfache melodische Variationen, sondern eher um die Veränderung bestimmter Elemente wie die Verschiebung von Betonungen. Monteverdi erklärt das sehr gut in der kurzen Notiz, die er der Ausgabe von 1609 beifügte: „La declamazione sempre libera, segue il significato della parola perciò nel recitativi non si troveranno indicazioni di tempo, nè molti segni di espressione“ („Die immer freie Deklamation muss dem Sinn der Worte folgen, denn in den Rezitativen gibt es keine Tempoangabe und auch keinen Hinweis für den Ausdruck“). „Das Lamento, das Ariadne auf ihrem Felsen singt, als Theseus sie verließ, wurde besonders wunderbar und mit soviel Gefühl und Mitleid gespielt, dass es keinen Zuhörer gab, der nicht mitfühlte, und dass alle anwesenden Damen bei dieser Klage Tränen vergossen.“ Dieser Kommentar zur Aufführung des Lamento d’Arianna befindet sich in einem Dokument, das 1608 die Hochzeitsfeierlichkeiten von Francesco Gonzaga mit der Infantin Margarete von Savoyen beschreibt. Die Florentiner Sängerin Virginia Andreini übernahm die für Caterina Martinelli geschriebene Rolle. Was ist mit der Partitur der neuen Oper Monteverdis geschehen? Davon weiß man nichts. Nur dieses Lamento überlebte, das so viele Menschen zum Weinen brachte. Es wurde 1623 einzeln verlegt. Diese Klage der Ariadne war nicht der Schluss der Oper: Selbst wenn Ariadne den Tod herbeiruft, wacht sie in der darauffolgenden Szene auf und lässt sich von Bacchus verführen, der sie heiratet; ein glückliches Ende war bei diesem Werk notwendig, das anlässlich einer fürstlichen Hochzeit aufgeführt wurde! Zu welcher Gattung gehört das Lamento? Rezitativ? Arie? Weder noch, oder zu beiden. Es handelt sich ganz einfach um eine neue Form, die des „Lamento“, die Monteverdi hier einführt, indem er ein perfektes Modell schafft, das das ganze 17. Jh. hindurch kopiert und imitiert werden sollte, als erstes von Monteverdi selbst im Lamento d’Olimpia (um 1620) oder im großen Lamento der Penelope, mit dem Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in patria beginnt, seiner Oper, die er 1640 für Venedig schrieb. Wie er beim Prolog von L’Orfeo angab,

beruht die gesamte Konstruktion auf dem Text. Zwar dominiert die Gattung des Rezitativs manchmal mit großer Lebhaftigkeit im Fluss des Textes auf einer einzigen Note (hier ist der Rhythmus das Hauptelement der Musik), doch um bereits zu dem zu gelangen, was Monteverdi später „Stile concitato“ (Kampfstil) nennt, u.zw. als Ariadne die Winde, die Gewitter und die Wellen ruft, um das Schiff des Theseus zu verschlingen. Die manchmal ziemlich abrupten Veränderungen der Harmonie helfen auch bei der Veränderung der Charaktere. Doch was die Originalität dieser neuen Form ausmacht, ist die ständige Präsenz von Passagen, die mehr arioso sind und in denen sich die Stimme über bestimmt Worte, bestimmte Erinnerungen erstreckt: die Einleitung „Lasciate mi morire“, die mit ihrer Reprise wie die Keimzelle der Aria de capo erscheint, die Rufe „O Teseo, Teseo mio“, die mehrmals wiederkehren (wieder das Konzept eines Leitmotivs?), die Klage der Ariadne über sich selbst, „la povera Arianna“, „la misera Arianna“, die Erinnerung an ihre Eltern, die sie nie mehr wiedersehen wird usw.

Zu Beginn des dritten Abschnitts taucht plötzlich eine kurze, leichte und tänzerische Phrase auf, die zwei Verse unterstützt, in denen Ariadne von Theseus spricht, der leichten Herzens seinem Schicksal und Athen zueilt, wo ihn ein glanzvoller Empfang erwartet; zwischen diesen zwei kurzen fröhlichen Phrasen ist ein kläglicher Schrei zu hören, nämlich der der Ariadne: „et io piango“ („und ich weine“). Diese Vielfalt der Affekte, die immer an den Text gebunden sind, ist das wesentliche Merkmal dieser neuen monteverdischen Form. Die fünfstimmige Fassung aus dem Sechsten Madrigalbuch veranschaulicht schließlich das gleiche verstärkende Prinzip wie das, das in L’Orfeo beim Schrei der Messagiera verwendet wurde.

Man kann den Grund dafür, dass Monteverdi vorübergehend die weltliche Vokalmusik aufgab, in der 1613 erfolgten Übernahme seiner Funktion als Kapellmeister der Markuskirche von Venedig sehen, als er den Hof von Mantua verließ. Nichtsdestoweniger erscheinen in Form verschiedener Ausgaben nach und nach Sammlungen von Kompositionen sehr verschiedener Gattungen, die die Titel Madrigali (das VII. und VIII. Buch, 1619 und 1638) oder Scherzi Musicali (1632) tragen. Oft ist es sehr schwer, die Kompositionen dieser Sammlungen zu datieren. Sind einige jüngeren Datums, so stammen andere wie Combattimento di Tancredi et Clorinda und Ballo delle Ingrate aus einer weit früheren Periode und gehen wie der Ballo auf die Zeit in Mantua zurück.

Im Siebenten Madrigalbuch finden sich einige Stücke für Solostimme. Das berühmteste ist selbstverständlich Lettera amorosa a voce sola in genere rappresentativo. Hier wendet sich der Geliebte an seine Liebste. Und dennoch ist das Stück im Sopranschlüssel geschrieben. Akzeptieren wir also die Angabe „genere rappresentativo“, die für die beiden letzten Madrigalbücher charakteristisch ist. Diese Musik ist nicht nur für Konzerte geschrieben, sie ist auch dazu bestimmt, gesehen zu werden. Die Szene ist offensichtlich: wir sind im Theater. Die Geliebte erhält diesen Brief und liest ihn Recitar cantado. Wieder wird die Melodie den Affekten gemäß manchmal fast gesprochen, manchmal arioso interpretiert. Jedenfalls folgt die Geliebte der dem Titel hinzugefügten Angabe „e si canta senza battuta“ („und ist zu singen, ohne [den Takt] zu schlagen“). Weiter im selben Band ist ein anderes Stück dieser Gattung unter dem Titel Partenza amorosa zu finden. Es ist im Tenorschlüssel geschrieben, und der Brief wird gerade vom Geliebten geschrieben ...

Eine Besonderheit des Siebenten Buchs, das auch den Titel Concerto trägt, ist das Vorhandensein vieler Stücke für zwei Stimmen die in einfacherer Art in den Bereich der Arie gehören. Das ist der Fall von Ohimé, dov’è il mio ben, dessen vier Strophen wie Variationen in Duettform über dem Bass der Romanesca aufgebaut sind, einem Motiv, das sehr vielen Instrumentalkompositionen der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jh. diente.

1632 erschien eine kleine Sammlung für Solostimme (die aber auch das sehr berühmte Zefiro torna für zwei Tenöre über einem Ciaconna-Bass enthält). Darin findet man eine andere bedeutende, doch weniger bekannte Komposition: Et è pur dunque vero. Dieses Stück für eine Stimme hat die Besonderheit ein Ritornell für ein nicht klar angegebenes Melodieinstrument zu besitzen. Der Aufbau des Stückes in sieben Strophen ist sehr bemerkenswert. Derselbe Bass unterstützt die sieben Ritornelle und Strophen, wobei die Struktur jeder Strophe identisch ist: Geschickt wird das anfangs eher positive Gefühl nach und nach schwächer, um einen immer schmerzlicheren Ausdruck anzunehmen. Jedes mehr und mehr verzierte Ritornell kann als Ausdruck einer neuen Energie erscheinen, durch die der abgewiesene Liebhaber versucht, sich wieder zu fassen. Es geht nämlich um einen Liebhaber, der seiner Verzweiflung Ausdruck verleiht und immer tiefer in immer düsterere Gedanken verfällt, die ihn in Untiefen und Unterwelten führen. Wieder befindet man

sich den Gefühlen eines Mannes gegenüber (der einen Augenblick lang Lydia und die Dummheit derer erwähnt, die den Frauen vertrauen), doch ist das Stück im C-Schlüssel I geschrieben, also für Sopran. Selbstverständlich, warum nicht für einen Kastraten?

Wie es in dieser Zeit häufig der Fall war, da es den Begriff des Urheberrechts nicht gab, nahmen sich manche Verleger die Freiheit, Anthologien zu drucken, die verschiedene Kompositionen verschiedener Komponisten enthielten. Das trifft bei der Veröffentlichung von Alessandro Vicenti aus dem Jahr 1634 zu, in der man Ohimé, ch’io cado findet, ein Stück, das man ohne Zweifel als eine Arie betrachten kann. Sechs Strophen entwickeln (und verändern) sich über einem durch eine unaufhörliche Abfolge von Viertelnoten gekennzeichneten Bass, die dem Stück einen Charakter verleiht, den man im Jazz „swing“ nennen würde. Der Text drückt die Gefühle eines Mannes aus, der über seine wiederholten Misserfolge in der Liebe klagt; der hartnäckige Charakter des Basses betont die Beständigkeit dieser Gefühle, und das sogar mit einer gewissen Dosis Humor. Erst am Ende der letzten Strophe hört dieser Bass der Viertelnoten auf und lässt einem abschließenden Arioso Raum, als der desillusionierte Geliebte wünscht, sein Gefängnis möge das Paradies werden. Hier ist zu bemerken, dass die Ritornelli-Passagen keine Stimme für ein Melodieinstrument enthalten.

Angesichts des Charakters dieses Stücks können sie absolut von den Bassinstrumenten gespielt werden. Vincenti nennt diese Instrumente übrigens im Titel der Sammlung: „... Cembalo, Chitarrone, Doppelharfe und jedes Instrument der gleichen Art oder auf der spanischen Gitarre ...“ Im Achten Madrigalbuch (1638) befindet sich das berühmte Lamento della Ninfa. Das Stück ist eine Szene für die Bühne konzipiert. Eine Gruppe von drei Sängern (zwei Tenöre und ein Bass) künden die Ankunft der weinenden Nymphe an, deren Gesang sie danach etwa in Art unserer Radio- oder Fernsehkommentatoren immer wieder mit einigen Beobachtungen unterbrechen und mit der Bemerkung schließen, dass „es so ist, dass Amor in den Herzen der Liebenden Eis und Feuer vermengt“. Hier hat das Lamento nichts mehr mit dem Stil des dramatischen Rezitativs der Arianna oder der Lettera gemein. Es handelt sich um eine Arie, die von einem Basso ostinato begleitet wird, der aus einem absteigenden Tetrachord besteht und eigentlich ein Passacaglia-Bass ist.

Mit Unterstützung dieses Basses entwickelt sich diese Aria, in der die junge Liebende ihre

Verzweiflung besingt. Hier ist nur mehr von einem die Rede, vom Schmerz der Verlassenen, und dafür genügt ein einziger Affekt, wobei die zwanghafte Wiederholung des Passacaglia-Basses dessen Ausdruck endlos betont. In diesem Stück, das offensichtlich zu der für die Bühne konzipierten Gattung gehört, besteht Monteverdi darauf, dass Einleitung und Schluss im Takt gesungen werden müssen, während die Klage selbst der Gefühlsbewegung zu folgen hat, „a tempo dell’affetto del animo e non a quelle de la mano“.

Wir stellten diesem Lamento ein Stück für drei Männerstimmen voran, Perchè se m’odiavi, das nach Monteverdis Tod 1651 herausgegeben wurde, u.zw. in einer Sammlung von Madrigali e Canzonette, in der einige, bis dahin unveröffentlichte Kompositionen zusammengestellt wurden. Das Thema ist dabei das Gegenteil des Lamentos, da sich die drei Männer über die grausame, hochmütige, unbarmherzige Filli beklagen ...

Zu Beginn des Jahres 1634 – Monteverdi starb kurz nach dem 29. November – wurde L’incoronazzione di Poppea uraufgeführt. Bekanntlich gehört diese Oper zur neuen venezianischen Gattung, die sich ab 1637 entwickelte und mit der verschiedene Komponisten brillierten, darunter Monteverdis bedeutendster Schüler Francesco Cavalli. Monteverdi, der schließlich das Theater mit Musik nie aufgab, war von der Gelegenheit begeistert, seinen eigenen Beitrag zu der neuen Gattung zu leisten. Nach Ulisse im Jahr 1640 waren zwei andere Werke entstanden, die leider verlorengegangen sind.

Die Lehre des alten Meisters ist eindrucksvoll. Er hatte nicht nur die Entwicklung der theatralischen Sprache vollkommen begriffen, sondern außerdem hatte sich sein eigener Stil entwickelt, und seine Beherrschung des dramatischen und menschlichen Ausdrucks hatte eine ganz andere Wendung genommen. Vom oben erwähnten „Klassizismus“ ging er zu einer überempfindlichen, lebhaften, kontrastreichen, dramatischen und manchmal unvorhergesehenen Expressivität des „Barocks“ über. Der Monolog der Ottavia, indem die verstoßene Kaiserin ihren Zorn herausschreit, ihr trauriges Schicksal beklagt, voll Wut die Machtlosigkeit Jupiters erwähnt, der sie nicht rächen kann, und schließlich in größter Verzweiflung zusammenbricht, ist eines der eindrucksvollsten Beispiele dafür.

Neben den veröffentlichten Werken sind einige Kompositionen Monteverdis als Handschriften erhalten. In der Biblioteca dei Filippini von Neapel findet man die einzige Kopie von Voglio di vita uscir. Hier ist wieder einmal ein Text, der zur reichhaltigen Literatur der Liebesenttäuschungen zählt. Chi parla? Ein Mann? Eine Frau? Wieder gibt der Sopranschlüssel eine hohe Stimme an.

Der einzige Hinweis ist „A Dio crudel“. Demnach wäre also „ein Grausamer“ für diese Verzweiflung verantwortlich. Doch Jean-François Lattarico, der den Text ins Französische übersetzte, bemerkte: „Die Apokope des Adjektivs („crudel“ anstatt „crudele“) lässt mich eher zu einem Maskulinum tendieren, was der Sopranschlüssel bestätigt. Doch hätte das auch von einem Kastraten gesungen werden können. Man kennt hingegen besonders aus der Feder von Marino Gedichte, die sich ausdrücklich an Männer wenden, was nicht selten ist ... Die Schönheit dieses Repertoires besteht darin, auf eine fehlende Differenzierung der Geschlechter zu setzen.“ Abgesehen davon ist die Komposition erstaunlich. Ein Ciaconna-Bass (also mit einem lebhaften Rhythmus) reißt die Stimme in die Mäander virtuoser Vokalisen mit, die vom schmerzlichen Gefühl des Textes weit entfernt scheinen. Doch plötzlich hört alles auf, so wie das Leben plötzlich enden kann.

Ein erneutes Passacaglia-Ostinato tritt in dem Moment auf, in dem der Text den Tod in offensichtlicherer Weise erwähnt: „S’apre la tomba, il mio morir t’annuncio“ („Das Grab öffnet sich, ich verkünde dir meinen Tod“). Aus welcher Zeit stammt dieses Stück? Aus der letzten, aus der seiner letzten Opern? Im Jahr 1637 veröffentlichte Benedetto Ferrari – einer der ersten Komponisten der venezianischen Oper, einer der Musiker, der Monteverdis Mitarbeiter bei der Komposition der Poppea gewesen sein soll und dem man sogar das Schlussduett „Pur ti miro“ zuschreibt – eine Sammlung von Stücken für Solostimme.

Darin ist derselbe Text ebenfalls über einem Ciaconna-Bass vertont. Doch bei Ferrari kommt es nicht zu diesem Wechsel der Atmosphäre. Die Stimme singt weiter und wird unerschütterlich von der Ciaconna begleitet. Erst ganz am Schluss hört der Basso ostinato auf dem letzten Vers auf, um einem sehr kurzen Rezitativ zu weichen. Der bewunderungswürdige Claudio führt uns weit darüber hinaus ...
