Beethoven 2020 by Outhere Music Two hundred and fifty years ago, the city of Bonn saw the birth of one of the most important composers in the history of music – Ludwig van Beethoven. To mark this anniversary, Outhere Music pays tribute to this colossal artist through a series of projects and re-releases in order to appreciate his work from a fresh perspective, just as Beethoven himself constantly strove to reinvent his work, open new paths and new musical languages. As its name suggests, the ‘Beethoven Rediscovered’ boxed set will be an opportunity to rediscover the composer’s repertoire through original approaches to interpretation, notably through recordings on the fortepiano by Alexei Lubimov, Olga Pashchenko, Arthur Schoonderwoerd and Yury Martynov, who perform the famous symphonies transcribed by Franz Liszt between 1837 and 1865. This trend for organological reconstruction also explains the presence in this set of the complete symphonies and overtures performed on period instruments by Jos Van Immerseel and his Anima Eterna ensemble – a good way to come as close as possible to the sounds that Beethoven may have heard in his time… Among the new projects from Alpha for the occasion are also the complete sonatas for cello and fortepiano, recorded by Nicolas Altstaedt on an instrument with gut strings and classical bow and Alexander Lonquich on a Graf piano. Jos Van Immerseel has recorded the best-known sonatas on the fortepiano (the ‘Pathétique’, the ‘Moonlight Sonata’, the ‘Rondo alla ingharese’), while the Arcana label will re-release the complete legendary sonatas performed by the great late pianist Paul-Badura Skoda. Finally, the Belgian jazz group Aka Moon will highlight the pioneering aspect of Beethoven’s music with an astonishing reinterpretation of his Opus 111, considered to be a pioneering work in the harmonic language of jazz. And the list goes on… Ori and Omri Epstein of the Busch Trio will also release their complete cello sonatas at Linn Records; Martin Helmchen will share his unique vision of the piano concertos, with Andrew Manze leading the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin; Lorenzo Gatto and Julien Libeer will do the same for the violin and piano sonatas, while the young prodigy Filippo Gorini will take on – among others – the colossal ‘Hammerklavier’. Meanwhile, the Orchester Wiener Akademie and its conductor Martin Haselböck continue the ‘Resound Beethoven’ series, a complete set of symphonies on period instruments that scrupulously respect the 200-year-old orchestra layout. On the Ramée label, flautist Tami Krausz and Shuann Chai on the fortepiano will present their interpretation of Beethoven’s Serenade Op. 41, a high point of composition for the flute and piano. In addition to this abundance of new and original projects, there are also older recordings, which have marked Beethoven’s discography in recent years: the complete string quartets by the Belcea Quartet, the complete piano sonatas by François-Frédéric Guy and the last string quartets performed by the Brentano Quartet... A life and work that Outhere Music will celebrate with many other projects!
