« Je joue Schubert », dit l’interprète.

Pris au pied de la lettre, cela signifie : je joue le rôle de Schubert – où ? Dans une grande pièce de théâtre dont nous essayons de comprendre le début et qui n’est pas encore arrivée à son terme. L’interprète ne remplira le rôle de Schubert que si, pendant la durée de la représentation, son moi s’identifie le plus possible avec l’incarnation de cet homme merveilleux qui est née en son for intérieur au fil du temps. Il va devoir se servir de tout ce qu’il a appris en tant que musicien et s’ouvrir malgré tout à cette œuvre – le Voyage d’hiver –, à tel point que sa propre imagination ne va pas seulement la revivre une nouvelle fois, mais la vivre différemment : différemment non pas dans le sens d’une « idée sauvage », arbitraire, mais en s’abandonnant pour un instant ou pour quelques instants à sa propre intuition, comme s’il lui fallait faire l’expérience de tout le processus douloureux qui a donné naissance à cette composition. Le maître avec qui il est en contact l’animera peut-être alors de telle manière que cette identification activera dans un même souffle ses forces créatrices personnelles.

Pourquoi percevons-nous le Voyage d’hiver aujourd’hui avec une telle intensité et d’une manière toute nouvelle ?

Avons-nous compris que, pour la première fois dans l’évolution de la grande tradition européenne, il exprime la solitude à l’époque de la modernité, ce terrible cri : « Malheur à celui qui est seul ! », les tourments de notre existence, mais aussi le plaisir débordant de notre vie ?

Une exécution du Voyage d’hiver semble nous faire subir la magie de cet homme singulier qu’était Schubert. Si cet envoûtement s’accroît jusqu’à en devenir insupportable, une passion, oublieuse d’ellemême, pour ces sonorités magiques commence à paralyser notre moi : il semble que la voix de la vie elle-même devienne un événement audible. Ce n’est plus seulement la voix de l’individu Schubert, mais l’expression d’une conscience plus profonde de notre existence humaine.

Ne percevons-nous pas le Voyage d’hiver de Schubert depuis longtemps comme une Passion laïque ?

Comme une liturgie sécularisée ?

vingt-cinq ans d’« interprétation composée »

L’expression « interprétation composée » doit être comprise seulement dans ce sens complexe ; autrement, elle ne ferait que trahir une ignorance naïve à l’égard des grands chefs-d’œuvre. J’ai consacré une autre interprétation composée aux Variations Diabelli de Beethoven et une troisième à la Fantaisie en do majeur de Schumann. Il s’agit à chaque fois non de créer simplement des variations dans un sens ornemental ou structurel, ou de modifier le caractère de la musique, comme dans le cas de la technique classique des variations. La distance temporelle qui nous sépare des chefs-d’œuvre du passé veut se manifester clairement, par l’intervention soudaine ou progressive de moyens expressifs de notre temps.

Les époques se font entendre ensemble, non sous la forme d’une harmonie, mais souvent comme contradiction. L’arrangeur doit ensuite se retirer en ce lieu où l’interprète fidèle doit normalement se trouver : à la place du traducteur, du médiateur, du représentant. L’œuvre modifiée ne doit pas avoir à supporter de dommage, elle ne doit pas être faussée ou tournée contre son orientation naturelle.

Tout cela peut sembler paradoxal. Mais dans ce paradoxe se produit la transmission de la vie intellectuelle, qui doit toujours consister en un dialogue d’époques différentes : comme une conversation entre une époque passée et une époque en train de s’écouler, entre une vieille et une jeune mentalité, entre un sentiment ancien et un nouveau sentiment de la vie.

L’interprète savant comprendra ce que je veux dire ; il ne va pas le prendre pour l’exigence d’imiter de façon ridicule des « sentiments » intimes. Il s’agit bien de la tentative de comprendre l’essence d’un travail exhaustif ; c’est le travail de la représentation d’une œuvre, à la recherche de moyens toujours nouveaux. Au cours de ce travail, l’interprète va peut-être tomber sur une idée qui lui impose de transgresser les voies ordinaires de l’interprétation – la lettre du texte. Il lui faut alors faire preuve de la plus grande prudence. Arrivé à ce point, il peut vite trébucher, il peut courir le risque de brouiller les lignes claires de l’original par la maladresse de ses propres idées, ou de menacer l’équilibre de l’ensemble par des effets purement éphémères. Le danger ne consiste pas dans le choc que peut éventuellement provoquer l’emploi de moyens stylistiques très éloignés de l’univers de Schubert. Il consiste au contraire dans le fait de donner à la voix de l’« interprète composant » un rôle trop dominant : elle n’est qu’une réponse à la question que l’original semble avoir posée à l’instant. Il ne s’agit pas pour l’interprète d’une œuvre personnelle dont il devrait fixer le style avec netteté ; ses idées sont et restent une réaction entièrement spontanée.

Quand on parle d’interprètes dans la vie musicale d’aujourd’hui, on entend la plupart du temps les musiciennes et les musiciens qui exécutent une œuvre. Si l’on remonte d’environ deux cents ans dans l’histoire de la musique, jusqu’à l’époque de Schubert à peu près, on constate qu’il en allait différemment : chanteurs ou violonistes n’interprétaient pas une pièce musicale, ils la jouaient, l’exécutaient, la faisaient entendre – et cela en fonction de règles si généralement connues et admises que l’on considérait que la partition de l’œuvre jouée n’exigeait aucune interprétation, aucune explication.

Quand on qualifie aujourd’hui les musiciens d’interprètes, ce n’est pas du tout une simple formule un peu grandiloquente pour parler d’une pratique que l’on désignait autrefois plus modestement. Plus une œuvre d’art est ancienne, plus la distance est grande entre le monde d’où elle vient et celui dans lequel on la redonne à percevoir. Faire venir dans le présent l’art du passé exige donc de faire intervenir une médiation, laquelle n’est guère pensable sans interprétation.

Un chanteur qui donne aujourd’hui en concert le cycle de lieder du Voyage d’hiver de Schubert se voit confronté en tant qu’interprète à un grand nombre de tâches et de questions. Comment doit-il se représenter la figure du voyageur ? Est-ce un jeune homme ou un homme mûr qui traverse une crise existentielle ? Vit-il ce qu’il chante dans la réalité ou seulement en imagination ? Et comment faut-il traiter la musique de Schubert ? Faut-il s’attacher avant tout à en faire ressortir la beauté ? Ou le chanteur peut-il se permettre de lui donner un aspect rauque, de faire entendre des failles et des ruptures ? Tous les chanteurs sont en outre conscients du fait que le Voyage d’hiver de Schubert est un chef-d’œuvre, pour ne pas dire l’œuvre capitale de l’histoire du lied, qu’un grand nombre d’interprètes ont déjà chantée avant lui, certains d’entre eux, comme le baryton Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, d’une manière qui a marqué la façon dont on a entendu ce cycle de lieder pendant des dizaines d’années.

Un musicien qui veut chanter les lieder de Schubert doit apporter des réponses à des questions de ce genre (et à beaucoup d’autres) tout en établissant une relation personnelle avec cette musique pour développer une interprétation qui lui soit propre.

Pour Zender, le romantisme de Schubert et la modernité de la musique nouvelle et contemporaine, au cœur du travail artistique de l’Ensemble Modern, ne constituent pas une contradiction insurmontable, bien au contraire : comme il l’écrit dans un commentaire sur son œuvre, Zender reconnaît dans les œuvres tardives de Schubert « des germes qui ne s’épanouiront que plusieurs dizaines d’années plus tard, chez Bruckner, Wolf et Mahler ; on est tenté de dire que certains passages du Voyage d’hiver anticipent déjà l’expressionisme de notre siècle ». Mais Zender pense la musique de Schubert au-delà même de l’expressionnisme de l’école de Vienne, autour d’Arnold Schoenberg, jusque dans la musique de sa propre époque, caractérisée par une ouverture et une variété stylistiques considérables.

L’éventail des techniques que Zender met en jeu pour son « interprétation composée » du Voyage d’hiver est perceptible dès le premier lied, Gute Nacht. Avant de faire entendre la musique de Schubert elle-même, Zender s’en approche de diverses manières. Un tom joue de légers battements de croches (« comme des pas ») – le rythme de base de ce lied. Les instruments à cordes entrent à leur tour, mais ils jouent avec le bois de l’archet, avec lequel ils produisent des bruits en frappant les cordes. On devine plus qu’on n’entend une ligne mélodique descendante, qui ne devient vraiment audible qu’avec l’entrée d’une clarinette. Celle-ci, et d’autres instruments avec elle, n’entre pas seulement au sens figuré mais aussi au sens littéral : les musiciens se déplacent dans l’espace et, ce faisant, modifient l’espace sonore tout en rendant visible l’idée du voyage, sur laquelle repose tout le cycle de Schubert.

Après cette longue phase introductive, pendant laquelle on n’entend la musique de Schubert que par fragments, enveloppée dans des sonorités figées, l’entrée de l’ensemble à cordes produit un effet de surprise en nous faisant passer d’une production de bruits à une intonation « classique », selon Zender.

Cette nouvelle sonorité accompagne le début du lied de Schubert, que Zender commence par orchestrer d’une manière analogue à celle dont Johannes Brahms, Max Reger ou d’autres compositeurs anciens

Mais que fait un musicien d’aujourd’hui comme Hans Zender quand il aborde le Voyage d’hiver de Schubert non en tant qu’exécutant mais comme compositeur ? Qu’est-ce qu’une « interprétation composée » ? Hans Zender, lui aussi, a dû affronter les questions que se pose un chanteur lorsqu’il a décidé, au début des années 1990, de prendre ce cycle de lieder comme base pour écrire une œuvre personnelle destinée à l’Ensemble Modern. Dans cette idée de départ se trouvait déjà une tension féconde, qui parcourt toute l’« interprétation composée » du Voyage d’hiver de Zender : la rencontre du romantisme et de la modernité.

avaient procédé avec d’autres lieder de Schubert – la substance musicale du lied reste intouchée, seule la partie de piano est transcrite pour un ensemble instrumental.

Zender conserve cette proximité fidèle au texte de Schubert pendant deux strophes, pour ensuite, dans la troisième strophe, s’en éloigner avec une virulence d’autant plus grande. Il interrompt d’abord le vers « Laß irre Hunde heulen vor ihres Herren Haus » après le mot « vor » (« devant »), faisant sortir la musique de son pas régulier en insérant une croche supplémentaire. Le vers est alors repris une nouvelle fois, mais le chanteur est à présent renforcé par de la musique électronique. Il se produit quelque chose d’analogue sur les mots « von einem zu dem andern », qui sont parlés de manière rythmique (« avec un renfort »).

Zender interprète ainsi par la composition les vingt-quatre lieder du Voyage d’hiver d’une manière chaque fois tout à fait différente. Tantôt il reste très proche du texte de Schubert, tantôt il étend l’original avec un prélude, un interlude ou un postlude personnel, entretenant toujours un dialogue chargé de tensions avec la musique de Schubert, qui apparaît dans l’« interprétation composée » de Zender comme dans une nouvelle lumière, tout en produisant un effet atemporel.

twenty-five years of ‘composed interpretation’ ‘I play Schubert’, says the interpreter.

Literally, this means: he plays the role of Schubert – where? In a great theatrical drama whose beginning we are trying to understand and whose end has not yet been reached. The interpreter will only fill the role of Schubert if, for the duration of the performance, he identifies his ego as far as possible with what has emerged in himself over time as the embodiment of that wonderful man. He will have to summon everything he has learnt as a musician and still open himself to the piece – Winterreise – in such a way that his own imagination will not only experience this piece anew, but also experience it differently: not differently in the sense of an arbitrary notion, a ‘wild idea’, but in so far as he surrenders to his own intuition for a moment or a few moments, as if he had to experience the painful birth process of this composition in its entirety. The Master with whom he is in contact may perhaps then inspirit him in such a fashion that this identification activates his own creative powers in the same breath.

Why do we experience Winterreise today with such intensity and as if it were utterly new?

Have we realised that, in the continuation of the great European tradition, it articulates loneliness for the first time in modernity, that terrible cry ‘Woe to him that is alone’, the agonies of our lives, but also the exuberant passion of our existence?

A performance of Winterreise seems to draw us into a profound fascination with Schubert as an individual.

As this attraction grows to the point where it becomes unbearable, a self-forgetting passion for these magical sounds begins to paralyse our ego: it seems that the voice of life itself becomes an audible event. It is no longer just the voice of Schubert the individual, but an expression of a deeper awareness of our common human existence.

Do we not already experience Schubert’s Winterreise as a secular Passion? As a liturgy of the secular?

The knowing interpreter will understand what I mean; he will not misunderstand all these things as an invitation to a ridiculous reproduction of private ‘feelings’. It is, rather, an attempt to understand the essence of an exhaustive process: the process of representing a work that is always looking for new

The term ‘composed interpretation’ should only be understood in this complex sense; otherwise it would merely display a naive ignorance towards great masterpieces. I have dedicated a second composed interpretation of this kind to Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, and a third to Schumann’s C major Fantasy.

Each time the intention was not only to create variations in the ornamental or structural sense, or to alter the character of the music, as in classical variation technique. The temporal distance that separates us from masterpieces of past eras seeks to make itself apparent through the sudden or gradual permeation of the means of expression of our own time. The two periods sound together, not in the sense of harmony, but often enough as contradiction. But then the arranger must step back to the place where the faithful interpreter normally has to be: to the place of the translator, the messenger, the representative. The modified piece itself must not suffer any damage; it must not be distorted or turned against its natural direction.

This all seems paradoxical. But in this paradox occurs the transmission of intellectual life, which must always take place as a dialogue between different times: as a conversation between time past and time just passing, between old and young mentalities, between old and renewed attitudes to life.

resources. In the course of this process, the interpreter may also perhaps hit on an idea that commands him to go beyond the usual paths of interpretation – the letter of the text. Now he must exercise extreme caution. How quickly he will stumble at this point; how often he will be in danger of smudging the clear lines of the original through the clumsiness of his own thoughts, or of jeopardising the overall balance through merely ephemeral effects! The danger does not lie in the shock that may be triggered by the use of stylistic devices that are far removed from Schubert’s world. On the contrary, it lies in allowing the voice of the ‘composing interpreter’ to become too dominant: after all, that voice is only answering a question that the original itself seems to have asked. For the interpreter, this is not a piece of his own, whose style he would have to consolidate and clarify; his interjections are and remain a completely spontaneous reaction.

When we talk about ‘interpreters’ in musical life today, we usually mean musicians who perform a work.

If one goes back two hundred years in the history of music, more or less to Schubert’s time, things are rather different: singers or violinists did not ‘interpret’ a work, but ‘played’, ‘executed’ or ‘rendered’ it, following rules that were so generally known and accepted that the notes of the work being performed did not need any interpretation or reading at all, according to the understanding of the time.

If we call musicians ‘interpreters’ today, this is by no means just a somewhat highfalutin formulation for a process that used to be described much more simply. The older a work of art, the greater the distance between the world in which it originated and the world in which it regains its sensory significance today.

Bringing art of the past into the present therefore requires mediation, which in turn is hardly conceivable without an interpretation to shed light on it.

Singers who perform Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise today see themselves as interpreters, confronted with a host of tasks and questions. How should one imagine the figure of the wanderer? Is he a young man or is he going through a midlife crisis? Does he experience what he sings about in reality, or merely in his imagination? And how should one tackle Schubert’s music? Does it have to be sung beautifully above all else? Or may singers also allow themselves to roughen the beauty, to let breaks and cracks become audible? And then, every singer is aware that Schubert’s Winterreise is a major work, if not the central work in the history of lieder, a composition that so many singers have sung before them – some of them, like the baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, in a way that has shaped for decades our conception of how Schubert’s cycle should sound. Singers who want to sing Schubert’s music have to find answers to questions like these (and many others) and in the process construct their own relationship to this music and finally develop their own interpretation out of it.

But what does a contemporary musician like Hans Zender do when he approaches Schubert’s Winterreise not as a performer but as a composer? What is a ‘composed interpretation’? Many of the questions with

For Zender, Schubert’s Romanticism and the modernity of new and contemporary music, which is the focus of the artistic work of the Ensemble Modern, are not irreconcilable contradictions. On the contrary: Zender acknowledges, as he has written in a programme note, that Schubert’s late works contain ‘seeds that germinate only decades after they came into existence, in Bruckner, Wolf and Mahler; in some places in Winterreise one is tempted to say that the expressionism of our century is already foreshadowed’.

However, Zender’s conception of Schubert’s music takes it further still, through the Expressionism of the Viennese School around Arnold Schoenberg and right down to the music of his own time, which is typified by immense stylistic open-endedness and multiplicity.

The range of techniques Zender employs in his ‘composed interpretation’ of Winterreise can already be discerned in the first song (‘Gute Nacht’). Before he allows Schubert’s music itself to be heard, he approaches it in a number of ways. At the start, quiet quaver impulses (‘wie Schritte’, like footsteps) – the basic rhythm of the song – are heard on a tom-tom. String players enter, but they use the wood of their bows, with which they strike the strings noisily. A descending melodic line is more hinted at than heard; only with the entry of a clarinet does it become audible. The clarinet and other instruments enter not only in a metaphorical sense, however, but also literally: they move in space and, by doing so, create not only modifications in the sound space, but also a sensory visualisation of the notion of wandering that underlies Schubert’s cycle.

After the long introductory phase, in which Schubert’s music has been heard only in fragments and shrouded in a stark sonority, the use of the string ensemble, which now switches from a noisy tone production to, as Zender puts it, a ‘classical’ one, produces a surprising effect. The new sonority coincides with the beginning of Schubert’s song, which Zender initially orchestrates in the same way as earlier composers such as Johannes Brahms or Max Reger did with other Schubert lieder – the compositional substance of the piece remains untouched, but the piano writing is transferred to an instrumental ensemble.

which a singer has to grapple also preoccupied Zender in the early 1990s when he set himself the task of making Schubert’s song cycle the basis of a work of his own that was intended for the Ensemble Modern. Already in this fundamental idea lies a fruitful tension that runs through Zender’s ‘composed interpretation’ of Winterreise: the encounter between Romanticism and modernity.

Each of the twenty-four songs of Winterreise is interpreted by Zender in its own unique way. Sometimes he sticks very closely to Schubert’s text; sometimes he expands the original to include his own preludes, interludes and postludes. He is always engaged in an exciting dialogue with Schubert’s music, which appears in a new light in Zender’s ‘composed interpretation’, yet still produces an impression of timelessness.

For two strophes Zender retains this close fidelity to the letter of Schubert’s text, only to depart from it all the more drastically in the third. First he interrupts the line ‘Laß irre Hunde heulen vor ihres Herren Haus’ after the word ‘vor’ and jolts the music out of the regular marching rhythm that has prevailed hitherto by inserting an additional quaver. Then he starts the line again, but now he has the soloist sing with electronic amplification. Something similar happens at the words ‘von einem zu dem andern’, which are spoken rhythmically (and marked ‘mit Verstärkung’1).

Wörtlich genommen heißt das: er spielt die rolle schuberts – wo? in einem großen theaterstück, dessen Beginn wir zu verstehen suchen, und dessen ende noch nicht erreicht ist. der interpret wird die rolle des schubert nur dann erfüllen, wenn er sein ich für die Zeit der darstellung so weit wie möglich identifiziert mit dem, was in ihm selber im lauf der Zeit als inbild jenes wunderbaren mannes entstanden ist. er wird alles, was er als musiker gelernt hat zusammennehmen und sich trotzdem dem stück – Winterreise – so öffnen müssen, dass seine eigene Phantasie dieses stück nicht nur neu erlebt, sondern verändert erlebt: verändert nicht in dem sinne einer willkürlichen, einer „wilden idee“, sondern indem er sich der eigenen intuition für einen moment oder einige momente so ausliefert, als müsste er den schmerzhaften geburtsprozess dieser Komposition in gänze erleben. der meister, mit dem er in Kontakt steht, wird ihn dann vielleicht so beleben, dass diese identifikation seine eigenen schöpferischen Kräfte im gleichen atemzug mitaktiviert.

Warum erleben wir heute die Winterreise mit solcher intensität und ganz neu? haben wir begriffen, dass sie in der fortsetzung der großen europäischen tradition zum 1. mal die einsamkeit in der moderne artikuliert, diesen furchtbaren schrei: „Weh dem, der allein ist!“, die Qualen unserer existenz, aber auch die überschießende lust unseres daseins? eine aufführung der Winterreise scheint uns dicht in den Bann des einzelmenschen schubert zu ziehen.

Wächst diese anziehung bis ins unerträgliche, beginnt eine sich selber vergessende leidenschaft für diese magischen Klänge das eigene ich zu lähmen: so scheint es, dass die stimme des lebens selber zum hörbaren ereignis wird. sie ist nicht mehr nur stimme des individuums schubert, sondern ausdruck für eine tiefere Bewusstheit unseres gemeinsamen menschlichen daseins. erleben wir schuberts Winterreise nicht schon längst als eine weltliche Passion? als eine liturgie des säkularen?

der ausdruck „komponierte interpretation“ darf nur in diesem komplexen sinne verstanden werden; andernfalls würde er lediglich eine naive ignoranz mit großen meisterwerken zeigen. ich habe eine zweite solcher komponierter interpretationen den diabelli-Variationen von Beethoven gewidmet, und eine dritte der c-dur-Phantasie von schumann. Jedesmal geht es darum, nicht nur Variationen im ornamentalen oder strukturellen sinn vorzunehmen, oder den charakter der musik zu verändern, wie bei der klassischen Variationstechnik. der zeitliche abstand, der uns von meisterwerken der vergangenen epochen trennt, will sich deutlich machen, durch die plötzliche oder allmähliche durchdringung mit der ausdrucksweise unserer eigenen Zeit. die Zeiten klingen zusammen, nicht im sinne einer harmonie, sondern oft genug als Widerspruch. doch dann muss der Bearbeiter zurücktreten an die stelle, wo sich der treue interpret normalerweise zu befinden hat: an die stelle des Übersetzers, des Übermittlers, des stellvertreters. das veränderte stück selber darf keinen schaden leiden, es darf nicht verfälscht oder gegen seine natürliche richtung gekehrt werden. das alles scheint paradox. aber in dieser Paradoxie geschieht die Weitergabe geistigen lebens, welche immer als dialog verschiedener Zeiten von statten gehen muss: als ein gespräch zwischen vergangener und gerade vergehender Zeit, zwischen alter und junger mentalität, zwischen altem und erneuertem lebensgefühl.

der wissende interpret wird verstehen, was ich meine; er wird alle diese dinge nicht als aufforderung zu einer lächerlichen Kopie privater „gefühle“ missverstehen. handelt es sich doch um den Versuch, die essenz einer erschöpfenden arbeit zu begreifen; es ist die arbeit an der darstellung eines Werkes, die nach immer neuen mitteln sucht. im Zuge dieser arbeit wird der interpret vielleicht auch einen gedanken berühren, der ihm befiehlt, die gängigen Bahnen der interpretation – den Buchstaben des textes – zu überschreiten. Jetzt muss er äußerste Vorsicht walten lassen. Wie schnell wird er an diesem Punkt ins straucheln kommen, wie oft wird er in der gefahr sein, durch die Plumpheit seiner eigenen gedanken die klaren linien des originals zu verschmieren, oder durch bloß kurzlebige effekte, die Balance des ganzen aufs spiel zu setzen. die gefahr liegt nicht in dem schock, den vielleicht die Verwendung von stilmitteln auslöst, welche der schubert`schen Welt ganz fern liegen. sie liegt im gegenteil eher darin, die eigene stimme des „komponierenden interpreten“ zu dominant werden zu lassen: ist sie doch nur eine antwort auf eine frage, welche das original gerade gestellt zu haben scheint. es handelt sich für den interpreten ja nicht um ein eigenes stück, dessen stil er klar befestigen müsste; seine einwürfe sind und bleiben eine vollkommen spontane reaktion.

schubert MODern: hAns zenDer interPretiert Die winterreise ist im musikleben der gegenwart von interpreten die rede, dann sind in den meisten fällen musikerinnen und musiker gemeint, die ein Werk zur aufführung bringen. geht man in der musikgeschichte 200 Jahre zurück, etwa in die Zeit schuberts, verhält es sich anders: sänger oder geiger interpretierten ein Werk nicht, sondern trugen es vor, führten es auf oder brachten es zum Klingen und das nach regeln, die so allgemein bekannt und akzeptiert waren, dass die noten des zur aufführung gebrachten Werks nach damaligen Verständnis gar keiner interpretation, keiner deutung bedurften.

Wenn man heute musiker als interpreten bezeichnet, ist das keineswegs nur eine etwas hochtrabende formulierung für einen Vorgang, der früher deutlich schlichter bezeichnet wurde. Je älter ein Kunstwerk, desto größer ist der abstand zwischen der Welt, aus der es stammt, und der Welt, in der es heute wieder zu sinnlicher geltung gelangt. Kunst der Vergangenheit in die gegenwart zu holen, bedarf daher der Vermittlung, die wiederum ohne eine deutende interpretation kaum vorstellbar ist. ein sänger, der heute schuberts liederzyklus Winterreise vorträgt, sieht sich als interpret vor eine fülle von aufgaben und fragen gestellt. Wie soll man sich die gestalt des Wanderers vorstellen? ist er ein junger mann oder durchläuft er eine midlife-Krise? erlebt er das, was er besingt, in der realität oder nur in seiner Phantasie? und wie ist mit schuberts musik umzugehen? muss sie vor allem schön gesungen werden? oder darf sich der sänger auch erlauben, die schönheit aufzurauen, Brüche und risse hörbar werden lassen? und dann ist sich jeder sänger bewusst, dass schuberts Winterreise ein hauptwerk, wenn nicht das zentrale Werk der liedgeschichte ist, eine Komposition, die schon viele sänger zuvor gesungen haben, einige von ihnen, wie der Bariton dietrich fischer-dieskau, in einer Weise, die über Jahrzehnte hinweg die Vorstellung davon, wie schuberts liederzyklus zu klingen habe, prägten. ein sänger, der schuberts musik singen möchte, muss antworten auf fragen wie diese (und viele andere) finden und dabei eine eigene Beziehung zu dieser musik aufbauen und daraus schließlich eine eigene interpretation entwickeln.

für Zender sind schuberts romantik und die moderne der neuen und neuesten musik, die im mittelpunkt der künstlerischen arbeit des ensemble modern steht, keine unüberbrückbaren Widersprüche, im gegenteil: Zender erkennt, wie er in einem Werkkommentar schreibt, im spätwerk schuberts „Keime, welche erst Jahrzehnte nach ihrer entstehung bei Bruckner, Wolf und mahler aufgehen; an manchen stellen der Winterreise ist man versucht, zu sagen, dass der expressionismus unseres Jahrhunderts schon avisiert wird“. Zender denkt schuberts musik aber noch über den expressionismus der Wiener schule um arnold schönberg weiter in die musik seiner eigenen Zeit, für die eine enorme stilistische offenheit und Vielseitigkeit typisch ist. die spannweite der techniken, die Zender bei seiner „komponierten interpretation“ der Winterreise einsetzt, wird bereits im ersten lied („gute nacht“) erkennbar. Bevor Zender schuberts musik selbst erklingen lässt, nähert er sich ihr auf vielfältige Weise an. auf einem tom-tom sind leise achtelimpulse („wie schritte“) zu hören – der grundrhythmus des liedes. streicher treten hinzu, aber sie spielen mit dem holz ihrer Bögen, mit dem sie geräuschhaft auf die saiten schlagen. eine abwärts gerichtete melodielinie ist mehr zu ahnen als zu hören, erst mit dem auftreten einer Klarinette wird sie hörbar. die Klarinette und weitere instrumente treten aber nicht nur im bildlichen sinne auf, sondern auch in einem wörtlichen: sie bewegen sich im raum und schaffen, indem sie dies tun, nicht nur Veränderungen des Klangraums, sondern auch eine sinnliche Veranschaulichung der idee des Wanderns, die schuberts Zyklus zugrunde liegt. nach der langen eingangsphase, in der schuberts musik nur in fragmenten und eingehüllt in eine starre Klanglichkeit zu vernehmen war, wirkt der einsatz des streicherensembles, das jetzt von der geräuschhaften auf eine, so Zender, „klassische“ tongebung umschaltet, überraschend. die neue Klanglichkeit geht einher mit dem Beginn von schuberts lied, das Zender zunächst in einer Weise

doch was macht ein zeitgenössischer musiker wie hans Zender, wenn er sich schuberts Winterreise nicht als ausführender, sondern als Komponist nähert? Was ist eine „komponierte interpretation“? Viele der fragen, mit denen sich ein sänger auseinanderzusetzen hat, beschäftigten auch hans Zender, als er sich anfang der 1990er Jahre die aufgabe stellte, schuberts liederzyklus zur grundlage eines eigenen Werks zu machen, das für das ensemble modern bestimmt war. Bereits in dieser grundidee liegt eine fruchtbare spannung begründet, die Zenders „komponierte interpretation“ der Winterreise durchzieht: das aufeinandertreffen von romantik und moderne.

instrumentiert, wie ältere Komponisten, Johannes Brahms etwa oder max reger, es mit anderen liedern schuberts getan haben – die kompositorische substanz des lieds bleibt unangetastet, der Klaviersatz wird aber auf ein instrumentalensemble übertragen.

Jedes der 24 lieder der Winterreise wird von Zender in je ganz eigener Weise kompositorisch interpretiert. mal ist die nähe zu schuberts text sehr eng, mal erweitert Zender das original um eigene Vor-, Zwischen- und nachspiele, immer steht er in einem spannenden dialog mit schuberts musik, die in Zenders „komponierter interpretation“ wie in einem neuen licht erscheint und dennoch zeitlos wirkt.

Zwei strophen lang bleibt Zender bei dieser texttreuen nähe zu schubert, um sich dann in der dritten strophe umso drastischer wieder von ihr zu entfernen. Zunächst unterbricht er die Verse „laß irre hunde heulen vor ihres herren haus“ nach dem Wort „vor“ und bringt die musik durch die einschaltung eines zusätzlichen achtels aus dem bisherigen gleichschritt. dann beginnt er den Vers noch einmal, doch lässt er den sänger jetzt mit elektronischer Verstärkung singen. etwas Ähnliches geschieht zu den Worten „von einem zu dem andern“, die („mit Verstärkung“) rhythmisch gesprochen werden.

WiLL-o’-tHe-WisP a will-o’-the-wisp lured me into the deepest rocky chasm: how to find a way out does not greatly concern me. i’m used to going astray, every path leads to one goal: our joys, our sorrows are all a will-o’-the-wisp’s game! through the dry bed of a mountain [stream i calmly make my way down – every river will reach the sea, every sorrow find its grave.

tHe inn my journey has brought me to a graveyard. here, i thought, is where i shall rest for the night. you green funeral wreaths must be the inn-signs that invite weary travellers inside the cool inn. are all the rooms, then, taken in this house? i am weary, ready to sink, Wounded unto death. o pitiless inn, yet you turn me away? on, then, ever onwards, my trusty staff!

DeR LeieRmAnn drüben hinterm dorfe steht ein leiermann, und mit starren fingern dreht er, was er kann.

Barefoot on the ice he staggers to and fro, and his little plate is always empty. no one cares to listen, no one looks at him, and the dogs snarl around the old man. and he lets it all happen, happen as it will, he turns the handle, his hurdy-gurdy’s never still. strange old man! shall i go with you?
