« Le clavecin est parfait quant à son étendue, et brillant par lui même ; mais, comme on ne peut enfler ny diminuer ses sons, je sçaurais toujours gré à ceux qui, par un art infini soutenu par le goût, pourront arriver à rendre cet instrument susceptible d’expression1. »

Pourquoi est-il difficile de jouer la musique de François Couperin alors qu’elle semble si simple au premier coup d’œil ? Si l’on fait abstraction des ornements qui sont abondamment utilisés et qui demandent détente et contrôle de la part de l’interprète, la musique de Couperin n’est pas une musique « virtuose » comme peut l’être celle de Scarlatti. Faisant parfois appel au style descriptif, à l’imitation ou au portrait, elle requiert une sensibilité expressive particulière.

En nous livrant, dans son Art de toucher le clavecin, de précieuses informations sur l’interprétation de sa musique (et plus généralement sur l’interprétation de la musique française de son époque), Couperin apporte des éléments de réponse nécessaires à l’interprète actuel qui cherche avant tout à respecter les intentions du compositeur. Cependant, la crainte de ne pas outrepasser les indications données par ce dernier et une trop grande attention portée à chaque détail peuvent opprimer le souffle et éloigner du propos des œuvres.

Gustav Leonhardt disait, dans Inside Early Music2 : « Je ne connais pas de grand artiste qui, dans sa jeunesse, ait été plus négligent que dans sa vieillesse – pas dans un sens négatif, mais plus préoccupé par l’ensemble que par les détails. Pensez au Titien ou à Rembrandt ; ils étaient méticuleux quand ils étaient jeunes, mais plus bruts – ne s’intéressant qu’aux grandes choses et oubliant les petits détails – en vieillissant. Langue, inflexions, expression « Comme il y a une grande distance de la Grammaire à la Déclamation, il y en a une infinie entre la Tablature, et la façon de bien jouer4. »

Notre langue façonne notre façon de penser. Notre accent, nos tournures de phrases, nos inflexions font partie de notre expression. Il est bon de se souvenir que la langue écrite et parlée à l’époque de Couperin était différente du bien parler d’aujourd’hui. Jouer Couperin comme du papier quadrillé, inspiré par un métronome bien huilé occulte les perspectives ouvertes par sa musique. Il faut sans cesse chercher à donner le vrai sens à cette palette mouvante de sentiments naviguant entre fantaisie, passion, sensualité et noblesse. « En Nouvelle-France, nos ancêtres, qu’ils aient appartenu au peuple ou à l’élite, parlaient ainsi : “La couvarte de la barline éta trop légearte pour aller à Montrial. On a resté cheu nous.”

Pourtant, tous les Français de passage soulignaient la qualité de notre langue. Ensuite, au XIXe siècle, alors que notre manière de parler est presque la même, les jugements sur celle-ci se font sévères. Nous parlerions comme des péquenauds. Couperin ne va-t-il pas un peu dans ce sens lorsqu’il mentionne la « posture » à adopter par le claveciniste ? « Il faut avoir un air aisé à son clavecin : sans fixer trop la vuë sur quelque objet, ny l’avoir trop vague : enfin regarder la compagnie, s’il sen trouve, comme sy on n’étoit point occupé d’ailleurs3. » Dans ces quelques lignes, Couperin fait une remarque sur l’attitude corporelle mais peut-être découle-t-elle d’une attitude propre à sa musique : du recul mais pas trop, du sérieux mais en même temps une certaine indolence caractéristique de cette période où les mœurs étaient aimables et faciles.

Parler d’imprécisions avec précision Malgré sa notation musicale soignée et les indications précieuses fournies par Couperin dans son Art de toucher le clavecin, l’essentiel dans l’interprétation de sa musique ne peut être couché sur papier. Sa musique est d’une interprétation, comme la langue française, faite de règles mais aussi de nombreuses exceptions. Les grammaires et les dictionnaires contemporains nous donnent pour tout cela des réponses complètes, arrêtées, infaillibles. Il en était bien autrement à l’époque. Aussi consacre-t-il un paragraphe à ce sujet : « J’ai cru qu’il ne seroit pas inutile de dire un mot sur les mouvemens françois, et la diffèrence qu’ils ont avec ceux des Italiens. Il y a selon moy dans notre façon d’ecrire la musique, des deffauts qui se raportent à la manière d’ècrire notre langue. C’est que nous ècrivons diffèremment de ce que nous èxècutons ; ce qui fait que les ètrangers joüent notre musique moins bien que nous ne fesons la leur. Au contraire les Italiens ècrivent leur musique dans les vrayes valeurs qu’ils l’ont pensèe.

Par exemple. Nous pointons plusieurs croches de suite par degrés-conjoints ; Et cependant nous les marquons ègales ; notre usage nous a asservis ; Et nous continüons6. »

L’inégalité ne représente qu’un aspect de la singularité de la musique française du XVIIIe siècle et les questions liées à son interprétation conduisent beaucoup plus loin si l’on consent à s’aventurer hors des « normes d’interprétation » du moment.

Le clavecin de Nicholas Lefebvre 1755

« Vers la fin des années soixante-dix, le célèbre claveciniste, Gustav Leonhardt et moi – facteur de clavecins professionnel de longue date – ainsi que nos épouses nous sommes rencontrés à Amsterdam. Après plusieurs verres de bon vin français, la conversation a tout naturellement tourné vers les clavecins et, influencée par la provenance du vin, plus particulièrement vers les clavecins français. L’un des points de discussion dérive alors sur des instruments originaux de qualité inhabituellement inégale récemment découverts. Quelques suppositions folles et soupçons plus tard, je prétends qu’il devait être possible de faire des faux clavecins de meilleure qualité. La réponse immédiate fuse : « Il faut que tu le prouves! » C’est ainsi que Martin Skowroneck, facteur de clavecins disparu en 2014, a fait le pari de réaliser un clavecin ancien, basé sur un modèle de Henri Hemsch. Même s’il n’était pas question d’imiter exactement les plans de ce facteur, ni de pousser la contrefaçon jusqu’à en emprunter sa signature, l’idée était de pousser la supercherie en présentant l’instrument, une fois terminé, comme un véritable « ancien » récemment découvert.

Le nom d’un facteur ayant vécu à Rouen – et dont aucun instrument ne nous est parvenu – est choisi : Nicholas Lefebvre. Il sera daté de 1755 par Skowroneck, puisqu’il s’agira de son opus 55. De nombreuses pièces du clavecin ont été vieillies artificiellement afin de donner l’illusion du passage des siècles. Une fois terminé, l’instrument serait prêt à être restauré, comme le pourrait être un clavecin ancien. « Le 19 avril 1984, après avoir complété sa ‘restauration’, l’instrument est présenté à un cercle d’amis et de mélomanes lors d’un concert donné au Herengracht 170 à Amsterdam2. Pour moi, c’était le moment le plus excitant de tout le projet (il est possible que Gustav Leonhardt eut alors des sentiments similaires, mais en ce qui concerne l’authenticité, je n’avais pas d’inquiétude, à cause de ma préparation minutieuse). J’ai mobilisé tous mes pouvoirs de concentration à chercher à me décevoir toute la soirée; en fait, j’étais parvenu à tel point de perfection dans la réalisation de l’instrument que je «pensais» tout le temps que j’avais ramené un vieux clavecin à la vie.»3 Le clavecin a été généreusement prêté à Olivier Fortin par le fonds MecenARP et son président Nicolas Floquet.

reading between the lines ‘The harpsichord is perfect in its compass, and brilliant in itself; but, as one can neither swell nor diminish its notes, I shall always be grateful to those who, through consummate art sustained by good taste, manage to make this instrument capable of expression.’1

Why is it difficult to play the music of François Couperin when it seems so simple at first glance?

If one excepts the ornaments of which he makes abundant use and which require relaxation and control on the part of the performer, Couperin’s music is not ‘virtuosic’ as Scarlatti’s can be.

Sometimes resorting to descriptive style, imitation or portraiture, it requires special expressive sensitivity.

By offering precious information on the interpretation of his music (and more generally on the interpretation of French music of his time) in his treatise L’Art de toucher le clavecin (The art of harpsichord playing), Couperin provides us with the necessary elements for today’s performer, who seeks above all to respect the composer’s intentions. However, fear of not going beyond the indications given by the latter and excessive attention to every detail can inhibit inspiration and distract from the purpose of the works.

Gustav Leonhardt observed in the 1997 book Inside Early Music: ‘I don’t know of any great artist who in his youth was sloppier than in his old age – sloppy not in the negative sense, but in being more concerned with the whole than the details. Think of Titian or Rembrandt: they were meticulous when they were young, but rough – concerned only with the major things and forgetting about small details – when they were old. Language, inflections, expression ‘As there is a great distance between grammar and declamation, so there is an infinite distance between tablature and the art of playing well.’4

Our language shapes the way we think. Our accent, our turns of phrase, our inflections are part of our expression. It is helpful to remember that the written and spoken language of Couperin’s time was different from ‘proper speech’ today. Playing Couperin like squared paper, inspired by a welloiled metronome, obscures the perspectives opened up by his music. We must constantly seek to give its true meaning to this shifting palette of feelings navigating between fantasy, passion, sensuality and nobility.

‘In New France, our ancestors, whether they belonged to the people or to the elite, spoke like this: “La couvarte de la barline éta trop légearte pour aller à Montrial. On a resté cheu nous.”5 However, all the French people who passed through [New France] emphasised the quality of our language.

Does Couperin not take a step in this direction when he mentions the ‘posture’ to be adopted by the harpsichordist?

‘One must appear at ease at one’s harpsichord, without fixing one’s gaze too steadily on any object or allowing it to become too vague; and finally, one should look at the company, if there be any, as if one were not otherwise occupied.’3 In these few lines, Couperin makes a remark about a physical attitude, but perhaps it stems from an attitude characteristic of his music: distance but not too much, seriousness but at the same time a certain indolence specific to this period when social customs were friendly and easygoing.

In France, the 1789 Revolution had taken place and had been accompanied by a “phonetic revolution”. “Le bel usage”, the cultivated speech of the court and the salons, but also the most widespread form of speech, although with variants, among the population at large, was discredited in favour of the “le grand usage”, that of the bourgeois elite. Before, the elite used to say “sus la table”, “note maison”, “sarge” and “fret”.6 Afterwards, it said ‘”sur la table”, “notre maison”, “serge” and “froid”. What had once been considered chic was now seen as yokelish.’7

Talking accurately about inaccuracies Despite Couperin’s careful musical notation and the precious indications he provides in L’Art de toucher le clavecin, the essence of the interpretation of his music cannot be written down on paper.

Like the French language, it consists of rules but also of many exceptions. Modern grammars and dictionaries give us complete, firm, infallible answers to all these questions. But things were quite different at the time. He therefore devotes a paragraph to this subject: ‘I thought it would be useful to say a word about the French movements, and the difference between them and those of the Italians. In my view, there are defects in our way of writing music which are to do with the way of writing our language. For we write differently from the way we perform it, which is why foreigners play our music less well than we do theirs. On the contrary, the Italians write their music in the true note values in which they conceived it. For example, we dot several quavers in succession moving by conjunct degrees; and yet we mark them equal. Our usage has enslaved us, and we continue in it.’8

Rhythmic inégalité is only one aspect of the singularity of eighteenth-century French music, and the questions related to its interpretation can lead us much further if one consents to venture beyond the ‘interpretative norms’ of the moment.

The Harpsichord of Nicholas Lefebvre 1755 ‘Towards the end of the nineteen seventies, the famous harpsichordist, Gustav Leonhardt, and I (a lifelong professional harpsichord builder) and our wives met together in Amsterdam. Over several glasses of good French wine conversation naturally gravitated towards harpsichords and, influenced by the provenance of the wine, specifically towards French harpsichords. One point of discussion was the peculiarly varying quality of a few recently discovered originals. A few wild guesses and suspicions later, I claimed that it should be possible to make forgeries to higher standards. The instant answer was: “You have to prove that!”’

The story of a forgery without inention to defraud1

This is how the harpsichord maker Martin Skowroneck (1926-2014) took up the challenge of building a ‘period’ harpsichord based on a model by Henri Hemsch. Even if there was no question of imitating Hemsch’s designs exactly, nor of taking the forgery to the point of borrowing his signature, the idea was to crown the deception by presenting the instrument, once finished, as a genuine ‘original’ that had been recently discovered. Skowroneck chose to use the name of a maker who lived in Rouen, no instrument by whom has survived: Nicholas Lefebvre.

He dated the harpsichord to 1755, since it was to be his own opus 55. Many of the parts were artificially aged to give the illusion of centuries of wear and tear. Once finished, the instrument was ready to be ‘restored’, as a period harpsichord would be.

‘On 19 April 1984, after completing the “restoration”, the instrument was presented to a circle of friends and music lovers at a house concert at Herengracht 170 in Amsterdam.2 For me, this was the most exciting moment of the whole project (possibly Gustav Leonhardt had similar feelings, however as far as authenticity was concerned, I had no worries, because of my meticulous preparation). I mobilized all my power of concentration to deceive myself during the whole evening; in fact I succeeded to such a degree that I “knew” all the time that I had brought an old harpsichord back to life.’3 The harpsichord is generously loaned to Olivier Fortin by the Fonds MecenARP and its president Nicolas Floquet.

Warum ist es schwer, François Couperins Musik zu spielen, wo sie doch auf den ersten Blick so einfach scheint? Wenn man von den Verzierungen absieht, die im Überfluss angewandt werden und vom Interpreten ein lockeres, kontrolliertes Spiel erfordern, ist die Musik Couperins nicht „virtuos“ wie es die von Scarlatti sein kann. Da sie sich manchmal eines beschreibenden Stils, der Imitation oder des Porträts bedient, erfordert sie aber eine besondere expressive Sensibilität.

Indem uns Couperin in seinem Art de Toucher le clavecin [Die Kunst des Cembalospiels] wertvolle Informationen über die Interpretation seiner Musik (und allgemeiner die Interpretation der französischen Musik seiner Zeit) zukommen lässt, gibt er uns auch Elemente von Antworten, die für den heutigen Interpreten nötig sind, da er in erster Linie die Absichten des Komponisten beachten will. Allerdings können die Angst, sich über die Anweisungen Couperins hinwegzusetzen, sowie eine allzu große Aufmerksamkeit gegenüber jedem Detail den Elan des Werkes dämpfen und von seinem Wesen entfernen.

Gustav Leonhardt sagte im Buch Inside Early Musik im Jahr 19972: „Ich kenne keinen großen Künstler, der in seiner Jungend nachlässiger war als im Alter – nicht in einem negativen Sinn, sondern mehr um das Ganze als um Einzelheiten besorgt. Unsere Sprache prägt unsere Art zu denken. Unser Akzent, unsere Redewendungen, unsere Sprachmelodie gehören zu unserer Ausdrucksweise. Erinnern wir uns daran, dass sich die geschriebene und gesprochene Sprache der Zeit Couperins von der richtigen Ausdrucksweise unserer Zeit unterscheidet. Couperin wie ein kariertes Papier zu spielen und von einem gut „geölten“ Metronom inspiriert zu sein, verstellt die von seiner Musik geöffneten Perspektiven. Man muss ununterbrochen danach streben, dieser ständig sich wandelnden Gefühlspalette, die zwischen Fantasie, Leidenschaft, Sinnlichkeit und Erhabenheit jongliert, den wahren Sinn zu geben. „In Neufrankreich5 sprachen unsere Vorfahren, egal ob sie zum Volk oder zur Elite gehörten, folgendermaßen: « La couvarte de la barline éta trop légearte pour aller à Montrial. Verfolgt Couperin nicht ein wenig dasselbe Ziel, wenn er die „Haltung“ erwähnt, die der Cembalist anzunehmen hat: „Man muss auf dem Cembalo ungezwungen wirken: ohne den Blick zu sehr auf einen Gegenstand zu heften, aber auch ohne ins Leere zu blicken: schließlich {muss man} die Gesellschaft, wenn eine da ist, ansehen, als wäre man mit nichts Anderem beschäftigt“.1 In diesen wenigen Zeilen macht Couperin eine Bemerkung über eine Körperhaltung, doch sie kommt vielleicht von einer Haltung, die seiner Musik eigen ist: Abstand, doch nicht zu viel, Ernst, doch gleichzeitig eine gewisse Indolenz, die dieser Zeit eigen war, in der die Sitten zuvorkommend und einfach waren.

Von der Ungenauigkeit mit Genauigkeit sprechen Trotz der gepflegten musikalischen Notenschrift und den wertvollen Hinweisen Couperins in seiner Art de toucher le clavecin, kann das Wesentlich der Interpretation seiner Musik nicht zu Papier gebracht werden. Die Interpretation seiner Musik besteht wie die französische Sprache aus Regeln, doch auch aus zahlreichen Ausnahmen. Die heutigen Grammatiken und Wörterbücher geben uns auf das alles vollständige, feste und untrügliche Antworten. In der damaligen Zeit war das ganz anders. Daher widmet Couperin auch diesem Thema einen Absatz: „Ich glaube, dass es nicht nutzlos ist, ein Wort über die französischen Spielarten und über ihren Unterschied zu den italienischen zu sagen. Meiner Meinung nach gibt es in unserer Art Musik zu schreiben Mängel, die mit der Art zu tun haben, wie wir unsere Sprache schreiben. Wir schreiben nämlich anders, als wir sie aufführen; daher spielen die Ausländer unsere Musik weniger gut als wir die ihre. Hingegen schreiben die Italiener ihre Musik in den richtigen Werten, in denen sie sie erdacht haben. Zum Beispiel. Wenn mehrere Achtelnoten aufeinander in Sekundgängen folgen, punktieren wir sie. Und dennoch schreiben wir sie gleich; unsere Gewohnheit hat uns unterjocht; Und wir machen so weiter.“ 8

Die Unregelmäßigkeit ist nur ein Aspekt der Besonderheit der französischen Musik des 18. Jh., und die Fragen, die mit ihrer Interpretation zusammenhängen, führen viel weiter, wenn man bereit ist, ein Spiel außerhalb der „Interpretationsnormen“ des Augenblicks zu wagen.

solch verschiedenen Einschätzungen unterliegt? (...) In Frankreich fand 1789 die Revolution statt und wurde von einer „phonetischen Revolution“ begleitet. Der „schöne Gebrauch“, d.h. der des Hofes und der Salons, der allerdings mit einigen Varianten auch in der Bevölkerung am verbreitetsten war, kam in Misskredit zugunsten des „grand usage“ [„großen Gebrauchs“], dem der bürgerlichen Elite. Davor sagte die Elite „sus la table“ [„auf dem Tisch“], „note maison“ [„unser Haus“], „sarge“ [„Serge“] und „fret“ [„kalt“]. Danach sagte sie „sur la table“, „notre maison“, „serge“ und „froid“. Was als schick galt, wurde von nun an als hinterwäldlerisch betrachtet.“7

Das Cembalo von Nicholas Lefebvre 1755

Geschichte einer Fälschung ohne betrügerische Absicht.1

So ging der 2014 verstorbene Cembalobauer Martin Skowroneck auf die Wette ein, ein altes Cembalo nach dem Modell von Henri Hemsch nachzubauen. Auch wenn es weder in Frage kam, die Pläne dieses Instrumentenbauers genau zu imitieren, noch die Fälschung so weit zu treiben, seine Signatur auszuleihen, so bestand die Idee doch darin zu schwindeln und das fertige Instrument als ein wirklich „altes“, vor kurzem entdecktes vorzustellen.

Gewählt wurde der Name eines Instrumentenbauers aus Rouen – von dem kein Instrument erhalten ist: Nicholas Lefebvre. Skowroneck datierte es auf 1755, da es sein Opus 55 war. Viele Teile des Cembalos wurden künstlich älter gemacht, um die Illusion der vergangenen Jahrhunderte herzustellen. Als das Instrument fertig war, sollte es bereit zur Restaurierung sein, wie es bei einem alten Cembalo der Fall sein könnte.

„Gegen Ende der siebziger Jahre trafen sich der berühmte Cembalist Gustav Leonhardt und ich – seit langem professioneller Cembalobauer – sowie unsere Gattinnen in Amsterdam. Nach mehreren Gläsern eines guten französischen Weins kamen wir ganz natürlich auf Cembalos und unter dem Einfluss der Herkunft des Weines besonders auf die französischen Cembalos zu sprechen. Einer der Diskussionspunkte betraf schließlich neu entdeckte Originalinstrumente von ungewöhnlich unterschiedlicher Qualität. Einige verrückte Vermutungen und Verdächtigungen später, behauptete ich, dass es möglich sein müsste, falsche Cembalos von besserer Qualität herzustellen. Die Antwort sprudelte sofort hervor: Das musst du beweisen!“

„Am 19. April 1984 wurde das Instrument, nachdem es vollständig „restauriert“ worden war, bei einem Konzert am Herengracht 170 in Amsterdam2 einem Kreis von Freunden und Musikliebhabern vorgestellt. Für mich war das der aufregendste Augenblick des ganzen Projekts (möglicherweise hatte Gustav Leonhardt damals dieselben Gefühle, doch in Hinblick auf die Echtheit war ich aufgrund meiner sorgfältigen Vorbereitung nicht beunruhigt).

Ich mobilisierte meine gesamte Konzentrationsfähigkeit und bemühte mich den ganzen Abend über, Gründe zur Enttäuschung zu finden; eigentlich hatte ich bei der Herstellung des Instrumentes eine solche Vollkommenheit erreicht, dass ich die ganze Zeit „dachte“, ich hätte ein altes Cembalo zu neuem Leben erweckt.“3 Das Cembalo wurde Olivier Fortin großzügig vom Fonds MecenARP und seinem Präsidenten Nicolas Floquet geliehen.
