Lorsque Ludwig van Beethoven écrit son Trio pour piano, clarinette et violoncelle opus 11 en 1798, il est déjà connu des Viennois comme un improvisateur remarquable et un ambitieux compositeur.

Depuis son arrivée de Bonn en 1792, Beethoven cherche à s’imposer comme un pianistecompositeur dans la lignée de Mozart. C’est chez le prince Lichnowsky, l’un de ses premiers soutiens, qu’il révèle son opus 1 en 1795 : trois trios pour piano, violon et violoncelle, qui affirment déjà sa stature de créateur et élargissent le cadre traditionnel du genre.

Le trio suivant, opus 11, est en revanche plus léger, plus aimable même, visant cette fois moins à impressionner qu’à séduire : il s’adresse clairement à l’aristocratie éclairée et aux amateurs de bon niveau. Cela n’empêchera pas la critique, quoique globalement positive, de juger la partition parfois trop recherchée. Beethoven la destine probablement au clarinettiste Joseph Bähr, attaché à la cour de Prusse à Potsdam. Achevé en 1798, le Trio opus 11 est dédié à la comtesse Maria Wilhelmine von Thun (belle-mère du comte Lichnowsky), qui avait déjà soutenu Gluck, Haydn et Mozart. Après sa création en octobre chez le comte de Fries, l’œuvre est publiée chez Mollo. Son surnom, « Gassenhauer », en référence à l’air connu utilisé dans le dernier mouvement, désigne une rengaine populaire chantée dans les rues (« Gassen ») par tout un chacun.

Le brillant Allegro con brio expose deux thèmes aux premières notes apparentées. De forme sonate et d’une expression aisée, il est empli de contrastes dynamiques. Le beau thème de l’Adagio, d’abord énoncé au violoncelle con espressione, est dérivé de celui du Menuet de la Sonate pour piano opus 49 no 2 de 1796 (les deux œuvres partageant les mêmes esquisses) ; on verra plus loin que le Septuor est aussi impliqué dans ce réseau d’emprunts. Après un développement libre, le thème revient enrichi d’une abondante ornementation.

L’année suivante, en 1799, Beethoven commence son Septuor pour violon, alto, violoncelle, contrebasse, clarinette, basson et cor opus 20. Achevé en 1800, il est donné en privé chez le prince de Schwarzenberg puis créé le 2 avril au Burgtheater, lors du premier concert viennois organisé par Beethoven à son bénéfice (sa Symphonie no 1 y est aussi créée).

Dédié à l’impératrice Marie-Thérèse d’Autriche, le Septuor est publié en 1802 chez Hofmeister. Bien reçu, il est transcrit pour diverses formations, Beethoven lui-même se chargeant d’une adaptation pour clarinette (ou violon), violoncelle et piano – celle enregistrée ici. Cette transcription paraîtra en 1803 sous le numéro d’opus 38, dédiée à Johann Adam Schmidt, médecin du compositeur et bon violoniste. Dans les années qui suivent, la popularité du Septuor irrite Beethoven, amer d’être sans cesse ramené à cette partition relativement classique, alors qu’il cherche désormais à repousser les frontières de la création. « Il y a là-dedans beaucoup d’imagination mais peu d’art, aurait-il même déclaré vers 1815 à propos de l’œuvre. En ce temps-là, je ne savais pas composer.

Maintenant je crois que je le sais. » Cette popularité, le Septuor de Beethoven la doit à son mélange de dynamisme et de grandeur, de simplicité et d’éclat. Sa structure assez libre, son style chantant et accessible évoquent les genres

Le Tema con variazioni contribue grandement au caractère léger de l’œuvre (selon Carl Czerny, Beethoven aurait plus tard regretté de ne pas avoir composé un finale plus sérieux). Le thème utilisé est en effet celui du trio « Pria ch’io l’impegno » de l’opéra-comique de Joseph Weigl L’amor marinaro ossia Il corsaro (L’Amour marinier ou Le Corsaire), qui triompha à Vienne en octobre 1797. Beethoven caractérise clairement chacune des neuf variations qui suivent, pleines d’esprit, sans hésiter à faire oublier le thème (no 1 : piano solo brillant ; no 2 : clarinette et violoncelle en canon ; no 3 : dialogue des trois instruments con fuoco ; no 4 : ton mineur, des accords de piano alternent avec les autres instruments ; no 5 : de brillantes gammes du piano soutiennent les autres instruments ; no 6 : le thème déstructuré est partagé entre les instruments ; no 7 : ton mineur, accords de piano et rythmes martiaux ; no 8 : les instruments mélodiques chantent, accompagnés par le piano ; no 9 : piano en octaves, jeu d’imitations entre les instruments ; Allegro conclusif sur des motifs du thème).

du divertimento et de la sérénade, pratiqués par Haydn et Mozart – on remarque ainsi la proximité du Septuor avec le Divertimento K. 563 de Mozart, dont il partage la tonalité et l’architecture.

Un Adagio introduit l’Allegro con brio, de forme sonate et au premier thème bien dessiné. Le développement se concentre sur ce dernier, avant la récapitulation et une large coda. De forme ternaire, l’Adagio cantabile repose sur un thème fervent introduit à la clarinette. Ses évolutions, d’une grande économie de moyens et plus sombres dans la partie centrale, créent le sentiment d’une grande plénitude. Le thème du Tempo di Menuetto provient du Menuet de la Sonate pour piano opus 49 no 2 (déjà citée car ayant inspiré l’Adagio du Trio opus 11). Dans la section centrale, les instruments se répondent malicieusement.

Le Tema con Variazioni repose sur une mélodie d’esprit populaire, énoncée au violon puis à la clarinette – selon Czerny, il s’agirait de la chanson de batelier rhénan « Ach Schiffer, Lieber Schiffer ». Suivent cinq variations et une coda (no 1 : dialogue piano-violoncelle ; no 2 : thème orné au piano, brèves interventions des autres instruments ; no 3 : duo violoncelle-clarinette ponctué par le piano ; no 4 : ton mineur, les violoncelle et clarinette chantent de longues phrases accompagnées au piano ; no 5 : polyphonie calme et régulière, nuance dolce ; coda dans la continuité de la cinquième variation).

Le Scherzo (indiqué Allegro molto e vivace), presque humoristique, renferme un trio contrastant, dans lequel le violoncelle se voit confier une charmante cantilène. Un Andante con moto alla Marcia douloureux et solennel introduit le Presto final, mouvement perpétuel volubile fondé sur deux thèmes. Après un développement central, une cadence du piano conduit à la récapitulation, suivie d’une coda.

By 1798, the year Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Trio for piano, clarinet and cello op.11, he was already well-known in Vienna as a remarkable improviser and an ambitious young composer.

Since his arrival from Bonn in 1792, Beethoven had attempted to make his mark as a pianistcomposer in the tradition of Mozart. It was at the house of Prince Lichnowsky, one of his first patrons, that he had unveiled his Opus 1 in 1795: three trios for piano, violin and cello extending the traditional framework of the genre, and already affirming his stature as a composer.

This next trio, Op.11, was by contrast much lighter and more genial, trying this time less to impress and more to charm: the piece was clearly aimed at the enlightened aristocracy, as well as competent musical amateurs. This did not prevent the critics, though universally positive, from judging the score to be over-complex in places. Beethoven had probably intended it for the clarinettist Joseph Bähr, then engaged at the Prussian court at Potsdam, and it was dedicated to Countess Maria Wilhelmine von Thun (Prince Lichnowsky’s mother-in-law), who had already given support to Gluck, Haydn and Mozart. Following its first performance in October at the house of Count Moritz von Fries, the work was published in Vienna by Tranquillo Mollo. Its nickname ‘Gassenhauer’ is taken from the theme of the finale: the word means a popular tune sung in the streets (‘Gassen’) by all and sundry.

The brilliant Allegro con brio is a sonata form movement in a relaxed mood, yet full of dynamic contrast, presenting two main themes that each begin in a similar way. The beautiful theme of the Adagio movement, introduced by the cello con espressione, is taken from the Minuet of the Piano Sonata Op.49 No.2 of 1796; the two works share the same sketches – and as we shall see, the Septet also belongs to the same nexus of self-borrowings. After developing freely, the theme returns, enriched with abundant ornamentation.

The following year, 1799, Beethoven began work on his Septet op.20 for violin, viola, cello, contrabass, clarinet, bassoon and horn. Completed in 1800, it was given at a private concert at the home of the Prince of Schwarzenberg, then presented at the Burgtheater on 2 April during the first Viennese concert organised by Beethoven on his own account – the same concert at which his Symphony No.1 also saw its first performance.

Dedicated to the Empress Marie-Theresa of Austria, the Septet was published in 1802 by Hofmeister, and on being well-received it was then rearranged for various combinations. Beethoven himself made a version for clarinet (or violin), cello and piano – the one recorded here. Published in 1803 as op.38, it was dedicated to Johann Adam Schmidt, the composer’s physician, who was also a good violinist. In the years that followed, the Septet’s popularity irritated Beethoven, who became bitter about being constantly associated with this relatively conventional classical work, when he had been trying ever since to push back the bounds of creation. The Tema con variazioni greatly contributes towards the work’s lighthearted character – though according to Carl Czerny, Beethoven later regretted not having composed a more weighty finale.

The theme is that of the trio ‘Pria ch’io l’impegno’ from Joseph Weigl’s L’amor marinaro ossia Il corsaro (The Seafarer’s Love, or The Buccaneer), a comic opera that was a resounding hit in Vienna in October 1797. Beethoven gives a distinct personality to each of the nine characterful variations that follow, unhesitatingly diverging often quite far from the theme. Variation No.1 is a fluently brilliant piano solo; No.2 has the clarinet and cello duetting in canon; No.3 is a dialogue of all three instruments, con fuoco; No.4 in the tonic minor has subdued chords alternating between the piano and the other instruments; in Variation No.5 brilliantly sweeping piano scales contrast with the more sustained lines of the clarinet and cello; in No.6 the theme is broken up and shared between the instruments; in No.7 the theme is again in the minor key, with staccato piano chords, and march-like dotted rhythms; in Variation No.8 the piano accompanies the cantabile duet of the clarinet and cello, while in No.9 we have a game of canonic imitation between the instruments, with the piano in octaves – and a final Allegro that explores different motifs of the theme.

Beethoven’s Septet owes its popularity to its mixture of dynamism and grandeur, simplicity and sparkling brilliance. Its liberally free structure and accessible, cantabile style put it in the company of the divertimentos and serenades of Haydn and Mozart – in fact the Septet seems quite closely related to Mozart’s Divertimento K.563, whose tonality and musical architecture it shares. An introductory Adagio leads to the Allegro con brio in sonata form with its clear-cut main theme dominating the development section before the recapitulation and extensive final coda. The Adagio cantabile movement in ternary form is based on an ardent melody introduced by the clarinet; it is developed with particular economy of means in the more sombre central section, giving the movement a great sense of fulfilment. The theme of the Tempo di Menuetto comes from the Minuet of the Piano Sonata op.49 No.2 (which also inspired the Adagio of the Trio op.11, as we have already seen); while in the central Trio section the instruments engage in a playful dialogue.

The Tema con Variazioni is based on what sounds like a folk tune – according to Czerny, it was actually a boat song from the Rhine, ‘Ach Schiffer, lieber Schiffer’. The theme is introduced by the piano, and continued by the clarinet and cello. There follow five variations and a coda; Variation No.1 is a dialogue between the piano and cello; in No.2 the piano plays a highly ornamented version of the theme, with brief interventions from the other two instruments; No.3 is a cello-clarinet duo punctuated by the piano; in No.4, in the minor key, we hear long melodic phrases in the cello and clarinet, accompanied by the piano; while No.5 is a calm, measured polyphony marked ‘dolce’, continuing without a break into the final coda.

The Scherzo (Allegro molto e vivace) is in jocular mood, enclosing a contrasting Trio section in which the cello is given a charming cantilena melody. In the finale, a solemn, melancholy introduction (Andante con moto alla Marcia) leads to the main Presto, an exuberantly voluble perpetuum mobile based on two themes. After a central development section, a piano cadenza leads to the recapitulation, with an exciting coda at the finish.

Beethoven war im Jahr 1792 aus Bonn gekommen und versuchte seither, sich als Pianist und Komponist in der Nachfolge Mozarts durchzusetzen. Beim Fürsten Lichnowsky, einem seiner ersten Unterstützer, führte er 1795 sein Opus 1 auf: drei Trios für Klavier, Violine und Violoncello, die bereits sein Format als Komponist bestätigten und den traditionellen Rahmen der Gattung erweiterten.

Das folgende Trio Opus 11 ist hingegen leichter, ja sogar freundlicher, und zielt diesmal weniger darauf ab zu beeindrucken als zu bezaubern: Es wendet sich deutlich an die aufgeklärte Aristokratie und an Musikliebhaber hohen Niveaus. Die Kritiken sind ist im Großen und Ganzen zwar positiv, einige davon beurteilen das Werk aber dennoch als zu gewählt. Beethoven hatte es wahrscheinlich für den Klarinettisten Joseph Bähr geschrieben, der am preußischen Hof in Potsdam im Dienst stand.

Das 1798 vollendete Trio op. 11 ist der Gräfin Maria Wilhelmine von Thun (der Schwiegermutter des Fürsten Lichnowsky) gewidmet, die Gluck, Haydn und Mozart unterstützt hatte. Nach seiner Uraufführung beim Grafen Fries im Oktober wurde das Werk bei Mollo veröffentlicht. Sein Spitzname „Gassenhauer“ bezieht sich auf die bekannte Melodie, die im letzten Satz verwendet wird.

Das brillante Allegro con brio stellt zwei Themen vor, deren erste Noten einander ähnlich sind.

Die Ausdrucksweise dieses Satzes in Sonatenhauptsatzform und voll dynamischer Kontraste ist einfach. Das schöne Thema des Adagios, das zunächst vom Violoncello con espressione gespielt wird, ist von dem des Menuetts der Sonate für Klavier op. 49, Nr. 2 aus dem Jahr 1796 abgeleitet (die beiden Werke teilen sich die gleichen Skizzen); später ist zu sehen, dass das Septett ebenso in diesem Netz von Anleihen involviert ist. Nach einer freien Durchführung kommt das Thema mit ausgiebigen Verzierungen bereichert wieder.

Im darauffolgenden Jahr 1799 begann Beethoven sein Septett für Violine, Viola, Violoncello, Kontrabass, Klarinette, Fagott und Horn op. 20. Das 1800 vollendete Werk wurde zunächst im privaten Kreis beim Fürsten Schwarzenberg gespielt und danach am 2. April im Burgtheater beim ersten Wiener Konzert uraufgeführt, das Beethoven für seinen eigenen Gewinn organisierte (seine 1. Symphonie wurde auch damals uraufgeführt).

Das Septett ist Kaiserin Maria Theresia von Österreich gewidmet und 1802 bei Hofmeister erschienen. Es wurde gut aufgenommen und für verschiedene Besetzungen transkribiert, wobei Beethoven selbst die hier aufgenommene Bearbeitung für Klarinette (oder Violine), Violoncello und Klavier schrieb. Diese Transkription erschien 1803 unter der Opusnummer 38 und ist Johann Adam Schmidt gewidmet, Beethovens Arzt, der ein sehr guter Geiger war. In den folgenden Jahren ärgerte sich Beethoven über die Beliebtheit des Septetts, denn er war darüber verbittert, ununterbrochen mit dieser relativ klassische Komposition in Verbindung gebracht zu werden, obwohl er nun versuchte, die schöpferischen Grenzen zu erweitern. Er soll um 1815 in Zusammenhang mit diesem Werk sogar erklärt haben, dass darin viel Phantasie, aber wenig Kunst stecke, und er damals nicht komponieren konnte, während er jetzt wisse, dass er es kann.

Das Tema con variazioni trägt in hohem Maße zum leichten Charakter des Werkes bei (laut Carl Czerny soll Beethoven es später bedauert haben, kein ernsthafteres Finale dazu komponiert zu haben).

Beethoven charakterisiert deutlich jede der neun geistreichen aufeinanderfolgenden Variationen, ohne dass er das Thema in Vergessenheit geraten lässt (Nr. 1: Klavier solo, brillant; Nr. 2: Klarinette und Violoncello im Kanon; Nr. 3: Dialog der drei Instrumente con fuoco; Nr. 4: in Moll, Akkorde des Klaviers wechseln mit den anderen Instrumenten ab; Nr. 5: brillante Läufe des Klaviers unterstützen die anderen Instrumente; Nr. 6: das in seiner Struktur aufgelöste Thema wird zwischen den Instrumenten aufgeteilt; Nr. 7: Molltonart, Akkorde im Klavier und strenge Rhythmen; Nr. 8: die Melodieinstrumente „singen“ vom Klavier begleitet; Nr. 9: Oktaven im Klavier, Imitationsspiele zwischen den Instrumenten; abschließendes Allegro über die Motive des Themas.

Ein Adagio dient als Einleitung zum Allegro con brio in Sonatenhauptsatzform mit einem deutlich gestalteten Thema. Die Durchführung konzentriert sich auf letzteres vor der Reprise und einer breiten Coda. In seiner ternären Form beruht das Adagio cantabile auf einem leidenschaftlichen Thema, das von der Klarinette vorgestellt wird. Seine Entwicklungen setzen sehr sparsame und düsterere Mittel als im zentralen Teil ein und rufen das Gefühl einer großen Fülle hervor. Das Thema des Tempo di Menuetto stammt aus dem Menuett der Sonate für Klavier op. 49 Nr. 2 (die wir bereits erwähnten, da sie das Adagio des Trios op. 11 inspirierte). Im Mittelteil kommt es zu einem schelmischen Frage- und Antwortspiel zwischen den Instrumenten.

Diese Beliebtheit verdankt Beethovens Septett der Mischung aus Dynamik und Größe, Einfachheit und Glanz. Seine recht freie Struktur, sein melodischer, verständlicher Stil erinnern an die Gattungen des Divertimentos und der Serenade, wie sie bei Haydn und Mozart verwendet wurden – so ist die Verwandtschaft zwischen dem Septett und dem Divertimento KV. 563 von Mozart bemerkenswert, dessen Tonart und Aufbau es übernimmt.

Das Tema con Variazioni beruht auf einer Melodie im volkstümlichen Geist, die zunächst von der Violine und dann von der Klarinette vorgetragen wird – laut Czerny soll es sich um ein Lied von rheinischen Schiffern handeln: „Ach Schiffer, lieber Schiffer“. Darauf folgen fünf Variationen und eine Coda (Nr. 1: Dialog Klavier-Violoncello; Nr. 2: das verzierte Thema im Klavier, mehrmalig kurzes Eingreifen der andern Instrumente; Nr. 3: Duo Violoncello-Klarinette, dazwischen Klavierpassagen; Nr. 4: in Moll, Violoncello und Klarinette „singen“, vom Klavier begleitet, lange Phrasen; Nr. 5: ruhige, regelmäßige Polyphonie, Abstufung: dolce; Coda in Fortsetzung der fünften Variation).

Das Scherzo mit der Angabe Allegro molto et vivace ist fast humoristisch und umschließt ein dazu kontrastierendes Trio, in dem das Violoncello eine charmante Kantilene übernimmt. Ein schmerzliches, feierliches Andante con moto alla Marcia leitet das abschließende Presto ein, einen immer redseligen Satz, der auf zwei Themen aufbaut. Nach einer Durchführung im Mittelteil führt eine Klavierkadenz zur Reprise, auf die eine Coda folgt.
