Scarlatti (1685-1757). Ligeti (1923-2006). Une virtuosité instrumentale poussée à ses limites, une recherche de nouvelles sonorités, une écriture originale et novatrice… Autant de qualités qui réunissent ces deux compositeurs malgré les années et les pays qui les séparent. CONTINUUM propose un dialogue inédit entre ces deux personnalités inclassables.

Deux destins très différents Les débuts de ces deux musiciens connaissent des parcours contraires : celui de l’un, favorisé et protégé ; celui de l’autre, empêché et entravé. Né à Naples en 1685, et fils du très célèbre compositeur Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico démontre tôt ses talents pour la musique qui s’épanouissent dans cette ville musicale et foisonnante. Le jeune Ligeti naît quant à lui en 1923, en Transylvanie, dans un territoire passant d’une autorité (hongroise) à une autre (roumaine), au cœur des troubles politiques d’une époque sombre. L’attrait du jeune garçon pour la musique ne trouve, au sein de sa famille, ni compréhension ni assistance : « Dans ma petite enfance, le seul instrument de musique de notre foyer était un gramophone et je ne me lassais pas d’écouter des disques. J’aurais tant aimé être un pianiste prodigieux. » Malgré les efforts de son père pour lui trouver une place prestigieuse en Italie, Domenico ne trouvera de protection durable qu’auprès de la princesse Maria Barbara au Portugal. Engagé comme maître de musique, une relation très intime va se nouer entre eux. Scarlatti va tout d’abord composer pour elle des essercizi per gravicembalo… suivis par plusieurs centaines de sonates !

Devenue reine d’Espagne, Scarlatti la suivra à Madrid et restera à son service jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. Ligeti, quant à lui, subira un exil forcé. Seul rescapé, avec sa mère, de sa famille déportée dans les camps, il ira d’abord à l’Académie Franz-Liszt de Budapest, qu’il fuira en 1956 pour travailler avec Karlheinz Stockhausen à Cologne, dans son célèbre studio. Il s’installera ensuite à Vienne, où il obtiendra la nationalité autrichienne.

La musique de Scarlatti est indéniablement influencée, révélée par la culture ibérique pour laquelle il se passionne (flamenco, fandango, castagnettes, fanfares populaires…). Scarlatti n’est-il pas celui qui, « mieux qu’aucun autre compositeur espagnol, a exprimé l’essence même de son pays [l’Espagne]1» ? Ligeti, s’il est imprégné par la musicalité de sa langue natale, ne se réclame

Dialogue Les premières secondes du disque nous immergent d’emblée dans l’univers si unique et coloré de Scarlatti. Un enthousiasme haletant, de virils accords de guitare, une virtuosité frénétique sont retranscrits de manière brillante et captivante au clavecin. Un concentré de folklore espagnol.

Quant à l’Aria suivant, son lyrisme dépouillé ne serait-il pas une lointaine évocation du chant d’un gondolier vénitien ? Une danse infernale, des chants d’oiseaux, un mystérieux tremulo3…

L’étonnante sonate qui suit est à l’image de son compositeur : spontanée, poétique et fantasque. Écrite en décembre 1978, Passacaglia ungherese est une pièce qui, comme le suggère son titre, réunit deux univers chers à Ligeti : le baroque et la Hongrie. Deux clins d’œil à l’époque baroque y sont présents : un ostinato, caractéristique d’une passacaille (ici de 16 notes) ; et le tempérament mésotonique, une manière d’accorder majoritairement utilisée au XVIIe siècle, qui donne à la pièce cette couleur si particulière. En complément du rythme imperturbable de l’ostinato, une ligne mélodique semble flotter et rappelle la souplesse de la langue natale du compositeur : « La langue magyare est très adaptée à la poésie par la souplesse rythmique et métrique qu’elle autorise. » On retrouve Scarlatti et le Presto en ré mineur, extrait des essercizi per gravicembalo. Après ces doubles croches volubiles qui parcourent l’étendue du clavier, l’Adagio e cantabile, quant à lui, préfigure déjà quelques tournures classiques. Il semble hésiter entre lumière apaisante et sourde inquiétude. Dans un tout autre caractère, danse endiablée et accords chargés d’acciaccature dissonantes donnent à la sonate K.175 en la mineur toute sa saveur. Un rythme tout aussi entraînant nous transporte dans Hungarian Rock. De même que dans la Passacaglia ungherese, on retrouve des influences baroques, la pièce est d’ailleurs sous-titrée Chaconne. Un ostinato est également utilisé par Ligeti, mais inspiré cette fois par le rythme du jazz et de la musique pop.

Le début de la sonate suivante retentit comme un appel de trompettes. Bravoure et virtuosité sont à l’honneur dans cette sonate resplendissante. On retrouve le Scarlatti taquin de la sonate K.27, 1. Ralph Kirkpatrick, Domenico Scarlatti (trad. Dennis Collins), Paris, JC Lattès, 1982.

d’aucun courant : « Mes compositions échappent largement à toute catégorisation : elles ne sont ni d’avant-garde, ni traditionnelles, ni tonales, ni atonales. » En revanche, dans son écriture, Ligeti est très attentif aux positions de mains et à l’aspect tactile du jeu au clavier. C’est pourquoi il se réclame de quatre grands compositeurs : Chopin, Schumann, Debussy… et Scarlatti2 !

Continuum (1968). À son origine, comme un défi : créer la continuité avec un instrument qui produit par essence des sons discontinus. Ligeti transpose l’illusion de continuité produite au cinéma – par une succession rapide d’images – au monde sonore : la rapidité extrême de répétition des notes les engloutit dans une texture globale. « C’est comme un paysage vu d’un train : les tranches sont les poteaux télégraphiques, mais cela n’empêche pas de voir le paysage comme une unité, un tout.4 » Le jeune Ligeti était fasciné par les rouages de l’imprimerie de son oncle, cet amour pour la poésie de la mécanique se ressent particulièrement dans cette œuvre qui semble réglée comme un mécanisme de précision. Nous percevons les changements de motifs comme des « déformations progressives où les contours se courbent et se dilatent, jusqu’à se transformer en des motifs nouveaux5 ». Aux abords intimidants, cette pièce est pour moi une fascinante immersion au cœur de la sonorité du clavecin.

Profitons encore quelques minutes du clavecin avec l’Andante e cantabile en fa mineur en guise d’épilogue…

qui se joue du clavier – et de l’interprète ! – par les acrobatiques croisements de mains. Après les festivités, un vide se fait sentir et une étrange nostalgie plane dans la sonate K.213, qui n’est pas sans rappeler l’atmosphère si particulière de la Passacaglia ungherese. Un fandango envoûtant met fin à cette méditation. L’énergie gagne encore en intensité avec l’électrique et trépidante sonate K.519 en fa mineur. L’exaltation des notes répétées, le foisonnement des arpèges, l’entrée d’une fanfare… créent une texture sonore extrêmement riche. Cette même obsession pour le son est aussi au centre de l’une des œuvres les plus connues de Ligeti.

continuum Scarlatti (1685-1757) – Ligeti (1923-2006). Instrumental virtuosity pushed to its limits; original, innovative keyboard writing… there are so many qualities these two composers share, despite the history and geography that separates them. CONTINUUM presents an impromptu dialogue between these two unclassifiable musical personalities.

Two very different careers These two musicians started out on quite contrary paths: one favoured and supported, the other hindered and obstructed. Born in Naples in 1685, son of the highly celebrated composer Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico showed early musical talents that flourished in that teeming musical metropolis.

As for the young Ligeti, he was born in 1923, at the heart of the political turmoil of a dark interwar period, in Transylvania, a region that had recently been transferred from Hungarian to Romanian rule. His early attraction to music as a young boy received neither understanding nor support from his family. ‘In my early childhood, the only instrument in our home was a gramophone, and I never tired of listening to records. I would so love to have been a pianistic prodigy.’

Despite his father’s efforts to find him a prestigious post in Italy, Domenico was unable to find lasting protection until he was engaged as a music teacher for Princess Maria Barbara of Portugal: they developed a close and friendly intimacy. Scarlatti began by composing exercises for her – Essercizi per gravicembalo – followed by hundreds of sonatas. After she became Queen of Spain, Scarlatti followed her to Madrid and remained there in her service until the end of his life. By contrast, Ligeti’s exile was forced on him by events, after he and his mother found themselves sole survivors of the deportation of his family to the concentration camps. He first of all studied at the Franz-Liszt Academy in Budapest, then in 1956 fled to the west to work with Karlheinz Stockhausen at his celebrated studio in Cologne. He then established himself in Vienna, where he obtained Austrian nationality.

Scarlatti’s music is undeniably influenced and illuminated by the Iberian culture (flamenco, fandango, castanets, and popular fanfares) that he so passionately loved. As the Scarlatti scholar Kirkpatrick wrote: ‘No Spanish composer has expressed the essence of his native land

Dialogue The first moments of this CD immerse us at once in Scarlatti’s world, so unique and so colourful: its breathtaking enthusiasm, virile guitar chords and frenetic virtuosity are transcribed for the harpsichord in a brilliant and captivating way, in a concentrated essence of Spanish folklore; while the stripped down lyricism of the Aria that follows makes it sound rather like a distant evocation of a Venetian gondolier’s song. Then comes an infernal dance, bird songs, and a mysterious ‘tremulo’3… The astonishing Sonata that follows is the very image of its composer: spontaneous, poetic, and whimsical.

As its title suggests, Passacaglia ungherese (composed in December 1978) unites two worlds dear to Ligeti: the baroque period, and Hungary. There are two distinct nods to the baroque: an ostinato (of sixteen notes) characteristic of the passacaglia; and the use of meantone temperament, a tuning method in general use during the 17th century, and one that gives this piece its highly individual colouring. Complementing the unfluctuating rhythm of the ostinato, a melodic line seems to float above it that reminds us of the supple qualities of the composer’s native tongue, about which he said: ‘The Magyar language is extremely suited for poetry through the rhythmic and metrical flexibility that it allows.’

Back to Scarlatti and his Presto in D minor, from the Essercizi per gravicembalo, with its voluble stream of semiquavers running over the whole gamut of the keyboard; while the following Adagio e cantabile already anticipates certain classical motives, and seems to hesitate between a calm, soothing light and a nagging sense of apprehension. In quite different mood, the Sonata K 175 in A minor is a diabolic dance whose special flavour is provided by chords crammed with dissonant added notes. as completely as did the foreigner Scarlatti.’1 On the other hand, Ligeti, though steeped in the musicality of his native tongue, did not attach himself to any school: ‘My compositions escape all attempts to categorize them: they are neither avant-garde nor traditional, neither tonal nor atonal.’ On the other hand, in his keyboard writing, Ligeti paid great attention to the positioning of the hands and the tactile aspect of keyboard performance. Accordingly, the four great composers he named as his influences are Chopin, Schumann, Debussy – and Scarlatti.2

Passacaglia ungherese, there are clear baroque influences: the piece is even subtitled Chaconne.

Here too Ligeti uses an ostinato motive, this time inspired by the rhythms of jazz and pop.

The opening of the next sonata sounds out like a trumpet call, with bravura and virtuosity to the fore throughout this resplendent piece. Then we have Scarlatti in playfully teasing mood, as his Sonata K.27 exercises the keyboard – as well as the performer! – in acrobatic feats of hand-crossing.

Once thse festivities are over, a sense of emptiness and a strange feeling of nostalgia loom over the Sonata K.213, recalling the character and atmosphere of the Passacaglia ungherese. This meditation is succeeded by a bewitching fandango, then the energy levels are further intensified by the hectic, electrifying Sonata K.519 in F minor. The excitement stirred up by the repeated notes, the profusion of arpeggios, and the entry of a fanfare, all make for a remarkably rich sound texture.

The same obsession with sound is also at the heart of one of the best-known works of Ligeti: Continuum (1968). It began life as a challenge: to create a sense of continuity with an instrument that basically produces discontinuous sounds. Ligeti transfers the cinematographic illusion of continuity – produced by a rapid succession of single images – to the world of sound, as the extreme rapidity of the notes engulfs them in an overall texture. ‘It’s like a landscape viewed from a moving train: the sections are the telegraph poles, but they don’t prevent you from seeing the countryside as a unity, a whole.’ 4 The young Ligeti was fascinated by the rollers in his uncle’s printing works, and his love of the poetry of the mechanical is strongly reflected in this work, seemingly organized with clockwork precision. As listeners we perceive the changing motives as ‘progressive deformations whose contours curve and expand, to the point of being transformed into new motifs.’ 5 With its journey into dauntingly remote regions, for me this piece is a fascinating immersion in the sound world of the harpsichord.

After which we remain with the harpsichord for a few more minutes, as Scarlatti’s Andante e cantabile in F minor provides a kind of epilogue…

Instrumentale Virtuosität, die bis an ihre Grenzen getrieben wird, eine Suche nach neuen Klangfarben, eine originelle, innovative Kompositionsweise ... Die beiden Komponisten haben trotz der Jahre und der Länder, die sie trennen, all diese Charakteristika gemein. CONTINUUM schlägt Ihnen einen neuen Dialog zwischen diesen beiden schwer einzuordnenden Persönlichkeiten vor.

Zwei sehr unterschiedliche Schicksale Bereits der Beginn der Laufbahnen der beiden Musiker ist gegensätzlich: die des einen unterstützt und gefördert; die des anderen voll von Hindernissen. Der 1685 als Sohn des berühmten Komponisten Alessandro Scarlatti in Neapel geborene Domenico bewies früh sein Talent für die Musik, das sich in der lebhaften, musikalischen Stadt gut entfalten konnte. Der junge Ligeti wurde seinerseits 1923 in Siebenbürgen geboren, also in einem Gebiet, das von einer (ungarischen) Verwaltung in eine andere (rumänische) überging und in dieser düsteren Zeit im Zentrum politischer Unruhen lag. Der Hang des Jungen zur Musik stieß in seiner Familie auf kein Verständnis, und so wurde er auch nicht unterstützt: „In meiner frühen Kindheit war das einzige Musikinstrument in unserem Haus ein Grammofon, und ich wurde es nicht müde, Schallplatten anzuhören. Ich wäre so gern ein wunderbarer Pianist gewesen.“ Trotz der Bemühungen seines Vaters, ihm eine glänzende Stellung in Italien zu finden, erhielt Domenico nur bei der Prinzessin Maria Barbara von Portugal dauerhafte Unterstützung. Er wurde als ihr Musiklehrer angestellt, wodurch eine sehr enge Beziehung zwischen beiden entstand.

Scarlatti komponierte zunächst Essercizi per gravicembalo für sie, auf die mehrere hunderte Sonaten folgten! Als sie Königin von Spanien wurde, folgte ihr Scarlatti nach Madrid und blieb bis ans Ende seines Lebens in ihrem Dienst.

Ligeti musste hingegen ein erzwungenes Exil auf sich nehmen. Er und seine Mutter waren die einzigen Überlebenden der Familie, die in ein Lager deportiert worden war. Danach ging er zunächst an die Franz-Liszt-Akademie nach Budapest, von wo er 1956 floh, um mit Karlheinz Stockhausen in seinem berühmten Studio in Köln zu arbeiten. Später ließ er sich in Wien nieder, wo er die österreichische Staatsbürgerschaft erhielt.

Scarlattis Musik ist zweifellos von der iberischen Kultur, für die er sich begeisterte, beeinflusst (Flamenco, Fandango, Kastagnetten, volkstümliche Blasorchester usw.), ja sie wurde erst durch sie an den Tag gebracht. Drückte Scarlatti „nicht besser als jeder andere spanische Komponist das Wesen selbst seines Landes [Spaniens] aus “ 1? Ligeti war zwar von der Musikalität seiner Muttersprache geprägt, berief sich aber auf keine bestimmte Richtung: „Meine Kompositionen entgehen weitgehend jeder Kategorisierung: Sie sind weder avantgardistisch noch traditionell, weder tonal noch atonal“. Dagegen war Ligeti in seinen Kompositionen sehr aufmerksam gegenüber der Position der Hände und dem taktilen Aspekt des Klavierspiels. Daher berief er sich auf vier große Komponisten: Chopin, Schumann, Debussy und ... Scarlatti!2 ! dialog Schon die ersten Sekunden dieser CD versenken uns in die so einzigartige, farbenfrohe Welt Scarlattis. Eine keuchende Begeisterung, männliche Gitarrenakkorde, eine frenetische Virtuosität werden brillant und fesselnd auf dem Cembalo wiedergegeben. Ein Konzentrat an spanischer Folklore. Was die darauffolgende Aria betrifft, so kann man sich fragen, ob ihre schmucklose, gefühlsbetonte Stimmung nicht fern an den Gesang eines venezianischen Gondolieres erinnert.

Mit einem teuflischen Tanz, Vogelgesang, einem geheimnisvolles Tremulo3 usw. spiegelt die erstaunliche darauffolgende Sonate den Charakter ihres Komponisten wider: spontan, poetisch und launisch. Die im Dezember 1978 geschriebene Passacaglia ungherese ist ein Stück, das - wie sein Titel nahelegt – zwei Welten kombiniert, die Ligeti teuer sind: das Barock und Ungarn. Zwei Anspielungen auf die Barockzeit sind darin zu finden: ein für eine Passacaglia charakteristisches Ostinato (hier aus 16 Noten) und die mitteltönige Stimmung, eine im 17. Jahrhundert meistens verwendete Art, um die Instrumente zu stimmen, was dem Stück seine so besondere Klangfarbe verleiht. Ergänzend zum unerschütterlichen Ostinato scheint eine Melodielinie zu schweben, die an die Geschmeidigkeit der Muttersprache des Komponisten erinnert: „Die ungarische Sprache ist durch ihre rhythmische Geschmeidigkeit und die in ihr mögliche Metrik für die Lyrik sehr geeignet“.

Danach finden wir Scarlatti und das Presto in d-Moll wieder, einen Auszug aus den Essercizi per gravicembalo. Nach den redseligen Sechzehntel, die die Tastatur in ihrem ganzen Umfang durchlaufen, lässt das Adagio e cantabile seinerseits bereits einige klassische Wendungen ahnen.

Der Beginn der folgenden Sonate klingt wie ein Trompetensignal. Bravour und Virtuosität sind in dieser herrlichen Sonate allgegenwärtig. Hier findet man den schelmischen Scarlatti der Sonate K.27 wieder, der mit akrobatischen Handkreuzungen sein Spiel mit der Tastatur – und dem Interpreten!

– treibt. Nach den Feierlichkeiten fühlt man eine Leere, und so liegt über der Sonate K.213 eine merkwürdige Nostalgie, die an die so eigene Atmosphäre der Passacaglia ungherese erinnert. Ein betörender Fandango setzt dieser Meditation ein Ende. Die Energie gewinnt mit der pulsierenden Sonate K.519 in f-Moll noch an Intensität. Die Exaltation der wiederholten Noten, die Fülle der Arpeggios, das Einsetzen einer Fanfare usw. schaffen eine äußerst reiche Klangmaterie. Dieselbe Leidenschaft für den Ton steht auch im Zentrum eines der bekanntesten Werke Ligetis.

Continuum (1968). Ausgangspunkt dafür war eine Art Herausforderung: mit einem Instrument, das wesensgemäß keine kontinuierlichen Töne hervorbringt, eine Kontinuität zu schaffen. Ligeti überträgt die Illusion der Kontinuität, die im Film – durch eine Aufeinanderfolge rascher Bilder – hervorgerufen wird, auf den Ton: Die extrem schnelle Wiederholung der Noten versenkt diese in eine ganzheitliche Tontextur. „So wie man eine Landschaft in einem Zug sieht: Die Abschnitte sind durch Telegraphenmaste gegeben, doch das hindert einen nicht daran, die Landschaft als eine Einheit, als ein Ganzes zu sehen.4“ Der junge Ligeti war vom Räderwerk der Druckerei seines Onkels fasziniert. Diese Liebe zur Poesie der Mechanik ist besonders in diesem Werk zu spüren, das wie ein Präzisionsmechanismus geregelt zu sein scheint. Wir nehmen die Änderungen der Motive als „progressive Deformationen“ wahr, „in denen sich die Konturen biegen und ausweiten, bis sie sich in neue Motive verwandeln5“. Zunächst einschüchternd, ist dieses Stück für mich ein faszinierendes Eintauchen ins Innerste des cembalistischen Klangs.

Nutzen wir noch einige Minuten die Gelegenheit aus, als Epilog das Cembalo im Andante e cantabile in f-Moll zu hören …

Es scheint zwischen beruhigendem Licht und dumpfer Unruhe zu zögern. In ganz anderer Art verleihen der wilde Tanz und die Akkorde voll dissonanter Acciaccatures der Sonate K.175 in a-Moll ihren Reiz. Ein ebenso mitreißender Rhythmus bewegt uns in Hungarian Rock. Ganz wie in der Passacaglia ungherese findet man darin barocke Einflüsse. Das Stück trägt übrigens den Untertitel Chaconne. Ein Ostinato wird auch von Ligeti verwendet, doch ist es diesmal vom Rhythmus des Jazz und der Popmusik inspiriert.
