Ende Juni 1922 begann Hindemith mit der Komposition des Liederzyklus für Sopran und Klavier, dem die 15 Gedichte Das Marien-Leben von Rainer Maria Rilke zugrundeliegen. Erst mehr als ein Jahr später, Anfang Juli 1923, war der Zyklus vollendet. „Das war nicht leicht zu machen“, notierte Hindemith dazu in seinem eigenhändigen Werkverzeichnis, und auch die Notiz unter dem zuletzt komponierten Lied (Nr. 14: Vom Tode Mariä II): „Dann sang er Lob“ (ein Zitat aus dem Lied Nr. 5, Argwohn Josephs) verrät seine Erleichterung über den Abschluss des Werkes. Seinen Verlegern in Mainz kündigte er Mitte Juli 1923 die Zusendung des Manuskripts mit den Worten an: „Ich habe die Stücke sehr gern und ich bin froh, dass sie mir so gut gelungen sind. Ich bin sicher, dass sie bis jetzt das Beste von mir sind – und ich glaube auch nicht, dass zur Zeit ein Liederzyklus von ähnlichen Ausmaßen komponiert worden ist.“ Dass Hindemith an dem Liederzyklus für seine Verhältnisse ungewöhnlich lange arbeitete, lässt sich mit dem tiefgreifenden stilistischen Wandel vom musikalischen Expressionismus hin zur Neuen Sachlichkeit erklären, den er in dieser Zeit vollzog. Dieser Prozess wird in der vielgestaltigen kompositorischen Faktur der 15 Lieder des Marienlebens nachvollziehbar.

Das zuerst entstandene Lied Pietà (Nr. 11) ist ein Beispiel für den spezifisch Hindemithschen Expressionismus, der sich in äußerster Sparsamkeit der musikalischen Mittel manifestiert. Der Klaviersatz beschränkt sich auf einige ausgehaltene Akkorde und pochende Tonrepetitionen, die rezitativisch geführte, sich wiederholende Singstimme wirkt wie ein Klagegesang. So entsteht auch musikalisch das im Text artikulierte Bild der bewegungslos vor dem Gekreuzigten trauernden Maria. Wie in diesem Lied stellt die suggestive Kraft der musikalischen Gestaltung

Eine ganz andere Faktur weisen später entstandene Lieder des Zyklus auf. Die Musik scheint nun distanzierter, bisweilen sogar unabhängig von der Textvorlage zu sein. Dabei ist der textbezogene musikalische Ausdruck in bestimmten kompositorischen Formen wie Basso ostinato (Nr. 13, Vom Tode Mariä I) oder Variation (Nr. 14, Vom Tode Mariä II) sublimiert. Die Besonderheit dieses neuartigen Ausdruckskonzepts erläuterte der Musikwissenschaftler Hans Mersmann in dem 1928 erschienenen Band Moderne Musik des Handbuchs der Musikwissenschaft am Beispiel des Liedes Darstellung Mariä im Tempel (Nr. 2), das Ende April 1923 entstand: „Alle diejenigen, welche Rilke vorher vertont hatten, taten dies aus dem ihm entsprechenden Geiste des Impressionismus. Sie suchten die feine, verhaltene Farbigkeit, die dunkle Resonanz der Gedichte zu spiegeln. Dabei stand die Harmonik als das dem impressionistischen Dichter entsprechendste Ausdruckssymbol im Vordergrunde. Hindemith kommt von der entgegengesetzten Seite aus an den Stoff heran. Er stellt sich als Musiker nicht neben den Dichter, sondern ihm gegenüber. Er wölbt die Linie dieser Gedichte aufwärts zu schwingenden Bögen; er gestaltet sie zum Tempel, gibt ihnen die Spannungen und die weiten Innenräume der Kirche, welcher ihre sakrale Welt bedarf. Noch ein zweites kommt hinzu: er umspannt von dieser Stelle aus auch die geistigen Gehalte der Gedichte.

Wenn er aus der Darstellung der Maria im Tempel eine Passacaglia baut, so liegt, nachdem der Widerspruch der Oberflächen einmal überwunden ist, die innere Beziehung zwischen Wort und Ton

auch in dem unmittelbar danach entstandenen Lied Argwohn Josephs (Nr. 5) unmittelbare Wort-Ton-Beziehungen her: Es wird durchzogen von einer hämmernden Klavierlinie in fast ununterbrochenem Unisono, die nicht zur Ruhe kommt. Man hört deutlich, wie an Joseph, dem sich betrogen fühlenden Ehemann, Zweifel und Argwohn nagen. Selbst im Lobgesang, den er anstimmt, nachdem ihn der Engel über die Hintergründe von Marias Schwangerschaft aufgeklärt hat, ist noch sein zorniges Grummeln zu hören. Dieses Lied ist zugleich ein Beispiel für die Schroffheit und den motorischen Überschuss, der in vielen anderen frühen Werken Hindemiths zu finden ist.

Hindemiths intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Marienleben war auch nach der Drucklegung nicht abgeschlossen: Der starke Eindruck, den schon die erste Aufführung auf die Zuhörer machte – erwartet hatte ich gar nichts –, brachte mir zum ersten Male in meinem Musikerdasein die ethischen Notwendigkeiten der Musik und die moralischen Verpflichtungen des Musikers zum Bewusstsein. Hatte ich mit dem Marienleben mein Bestes gegeben, so war dieses Beste trotz aller guten Absichten doch nicht gut genug, um ein für allemal als gelungen beiseitegelegt werden zu können.

Begründete er die 1936 begonnene und mit der Publikation der Neufassung 1948 abgeschlossene Revision des Marienlebens. Dazu veränderte er die geradezu instrumentale Anlage der Gesangsstimme und schuf deutlichere Konvergenzen zwischen Klavier- und Gesangspart. Vor dem Hintergrund seiner in den 1930er Jahren gewonnenen musiktheoretischen Erkenntnisse veränderte er satztechnische Details, arbeitete harmonische Abläufe stärker heraus und realisierte eine spezielle Tonartensymbolik.

Die Neufassung hat sich seither im Repertoire als die häufiger aufgeführte Fassung etabliert – auch, weil sie technisch weniger herausfordernd ist als die Erstfassung. Demgegenüber steht die Ansicht von Glenn Gould, der davon überzeugt war, „dass Das Marienleben in seiner ursprünglichen Form der größte Liedzyklus ist, der je geschrieben wurde.“ Diese Fassung präsentieren Juliane Banse und Martin Helmchen mit der vorliegenden Aufnahme.

nicht nur im Stufenbau der Chaconne, die sich in regelmäßiger Wiederkehr steigend hinaufwölbt, sondern darüber auch in dem Konstruktionsprinzip. Die Gestaltung eines solchen Gedichts von der Tragfläche einer polyphonen Form aus rührt über alle sichtbaren Beziehungen hinaus an den Kern des Gedichts. Musiker und Dichter begegnen hier einander auf einer Höhe intensivster Geistigkeit, kühler Abstraktion, weit ausladender Gestaltung. Von dieser Stelle aus wurde Rilke vorher nicht erschaut.“

Nur wenige Künstlerinnen ihrer Generation sind in so unterschiedlichen Sparten und einem verschiedenartigen Repertoire so erfolgreich wie Juliane Banse. Ihr äußerst breit gefächertes Rollenfach geht von der Feldmarschallin, Gräfin in der Hochzeit des Figaro, der Fiordiligi, Donna Elvira, Vitellia, Genoveva, Leonore, Tatjana, Arabella bis zur Grete (in Schrekers Der ferne Klang).

Sie debütierte mit zwanzig Jahren in der Rolle der Pamina in Harry Kupfers Inszenierung der Zauberflöte an der Komischen Oper Berlin. Juliane Banse ist in Süddeutschland geboren und wuchs in Zürich auf. Sie nahm bei Paul Steiner und danach bei Ruth Rohner am Opernhaus Zürich Gesangsstunden und ergänzte ihr Studium bei Brigitte Fassbaender und Daphne Evangelatos in München. Seit dem Wintersemester 2016/2017 übernahm Die Sängerin selbst eine Gastprofessur an der Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf. Juliane Banse ist ein willkommener Gast an den großen Opernhäusern wie an der Züricher Oper, am Theater an der Wien, der Wiener Staatsoper, der Staatsoper Berlin, der Lyric Opera Chicago und der MET. Die Sopranistin ist auch als Konzertsängerin sehr gefragt. Sie arbeitet mit vielen berühmten Dirigenten zusammen, darunter mit Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink, Franz Welser-Möst, Mariss Jansons, Zubin Mehta und Manfred Honeck. Auch Liederabende stehen regelmäßig auf ihrem Terminkalender. Vor Kurzem war sie Gast bei der Schubertiade de Vilabertran, in Oxford und bei der Liederwoche auf Schloss Elmau, wo sie Wagners Wesendonck-Lieder sang. Sie trat auch bei den ersten Konzerten im neuen Pierre-Boulez-Saal in Berlin auf, wo sie ein von Wolfgang Rieger begleitetes Rezital sang. Viele ihrer CD-Aufnahmen gewannen Preise. Zwei CDs von Juliane Banse erhielten den „Echo Klassik“: Braunfels‘ Jeanne d’Arc mit dem Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra unter Manfred Honeck (Welt-Ersteinspielung des Jahres) und Mahlers 8. Sinfonie mit dem Tonhalle Orchester Zürich unter David Zinman. Im Februar 2017 erhielt ihre CD Unanswered Love großes Lob von den Medien. Sie enthält einige erstmals aufgenommene Werke von Reimann, Rihm und Henze, die sie mit der Deutschen Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern und Christoph Poppen herausbrachte. In dieser Saison erscheint ihre erste Einspielung mit dem Münchner Rundfunkorchester mit Werken von Braunfels, Korngold, Marx und Pfitzner.

Und es gibt Musiker, die sich allmählich ins Rampenlicht spielen und irgendwann nicht mehr wegzudenken sind. Normalerweise hätte der Gewinn des Concours Clara Haskil auch den 19jährigen Martin Helmchen in die Star-Rotation der Klassikwelt katapultiert. Doch ließen es die Konzertagenten und Plattenfirmen lieber langsam angehen. So entwickelte Martin Helmchen seine ganz eigene Musizierhaltung und etablierte sich mit einem ausdrucksvollen, geradezu innigen Spiel in der ersten Liga der Klavierwelt. Er gastiert regelmäßig mit den großen Orchestern in Boston und Chicago, London und Cleveland, Paris und Tokio und mit den großen deutschen Rundfunkorchestern. Mit seinen Debüts bei den Berliner, den Wiener, den New Yorker Philharmonikern und dem Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam ist er inzwischen endgültig im Olymp angekommen. Zu den Dirigenten, mit denen er zusammenarbeitet, gehören Herbert Blomstedt und Philippe Herreweghe, Marek Janowski und Vladimir Jurowski, Emmanuel Krivine und David Afkham, Andris Nelsons und Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Michael Sanderling, David Zinman und vor allem sein langjähriger Partner und Förderer Christoph von Dohnányi.

Martin Helmchens besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt der Kammermusik – eine Leidenschaft, für die Boris Pergamenschikow die wesentlichen Impulse gab. Zu seinen engen Kammermusikpartnern gehören seine Frau Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, Juliane Banse, Matthias Goerne, Veronika Eberle, Julia Fischer, Sabine Meyer, Julian Prégardien und Christian Tetzlaff. Seit 2010 unterrichtet er außerdem Kammermusik an der renommierten Kronberg Academy. Seit 2016 arbeitet Martin Helmchen für seine CD-Aufnahmen mit dem Label Alpha Classics zusammen.

At the end of June 1922 Hindemith began composing a song cycle for soprano and piano based on the fifteen poems Das Marien-Leben by Rainer Maria Rilke. It was not until more than a year later, at the beginning of July 1923, that the cycle was completed. ‘This was not easy to do’, Hindemith wrote in his manuscript catalogue of works, and the note under the song that was composed last (no.14, Vom Tode Mariä II), ‘Dann sang er Lob’ (‘Then he sang praise’, a quotation from no.5 in the cycle, Argwohn Josephs), similarly reveals his relief at concluding the work. In mid-July 1923, he announced to his publishers in Mainz that he was sending the manuscript to them with the following words: ‘I like these pieces very much and I am glad that I have managed them so well. I’m sure they are the best of me so far – and what’s more, I don’t think a song cycle of similar proportions has been composed recently.’

The fact that Hindemith worked on the cycle for an unusually long time, by his standards, can be explained by the far-reaching stylistic change from musical Expressionism to the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) that he accomplished during this time. This process is perceptible in the multifaceted compositional style of the fifteen songs of Das Marienleben. The first song to have been written, Pietà (no.11), is an example of Hindemithian Expressionism, which manifests itself in the extreme frugality of the musical resources. The piano part is limited to a few sustained chords and throbbing repeated notes, while the repetitive vocal line, handled like recitative, produces the effect of a lamentation. In this way, the image articulated in the text of Mary standing motionless as she grieves before her crucified son is also given musical substance. As in this song, so too in Argwohn Josephs (no.5), written immediately afterwards, the suggestive power of the musical setting creates direct relationships between

The songs in the cycle that were written later display a completely different style. The music now seems to be more distant from, sometimes even independent of the original text. The text-related musical expression is sublimated in specific compositional forms such as the basso ostinato (no.13, Vom Tode Mariä I) or the variation (no.14, Vom Tode Mariä II). The musicologist Hans Mersmann explained the distinctiveness of this novel concept of expression in the ‘Moderne Musik’ volume of the Handbuch der Musikwissenschaft, published in 1928, taking the example of the song Darstellung Mariä im Tempel (no.2), which was composed at the end of April 1923: All those who had previously set Rilke to music did so in the spirit of Impressionism corresponding to his style. They sought to reflect the subtle, subdued colours and dark resonance of the poems. As a result, harmony took priority, as being the expressive symbol most appropriate to the Impressionistic poet. Hindemith approaches the material from the opposing side. As a musician he does not place himself beside the poet, but opposite him. He bends the line of these poems upwards into swaying arches; he transforms them into the Temple, giving them the tensions and the vast interior spaces of the church which their sacral world requires. And there is more: he also encompasses the spiritual content of the poems. If he builds a passacaglia out of the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, then, once the contradiction of the surfaces has been overcome, the inner relationship between word and music lies not only in the hierarchical structure of the chaconne, which arches upwards at regular intervals, but also over and above it, in the structural principle. The construction of such a poem from the supporting surface of a polyphonic form touches upon the core of the poem, beyond

words and notes: it is pervaded by a hammering piano part in an almost uninterrupted unison that never comes to rest. One clearly hears how doubts and suspicion gnaw at Joseph, the husband who feels he has been deceived. Even in the hymn of praise he sings after the angel has told him about the circumstances of Mary’s pregnancy, his angry grumbling can still be heard. This song is at the same time an example of the asperity and motoric excess that can be found in many of Hindemith’s other early works.

all visible relations. Musician and poet meet each other here on a peak of intense spirituality, cool abstraction and expansive, sweeping design. Rilke has never been observed from this angle before.

The strong impression that the first performance already made on the audience – I had expected nothing at all – made me aware for the first time in my musical existence of the ethical imperatives of music and the moral obligations of the musician. While I had given of my best with Das Marienleben, that best was not yet good enough, despite all my good intentions, to allow me to set it aside once and for all as a success.

This was how he justified the revision of Das Marienleben, begun in 1936 and completed with the publication of the new version in 1948. In doing this, he modified the almost instrumental layout of the vocal line and created clearer convergences between the piano and vocal parts. Against the backdrop of the knowledge of music theory he had acquired in the 1930s, he changed compositional details, worked out harmonic processes more thoroughly and elaborated a special key symbolism.

Since then, the new version has established itself in the repertory as the more frequently performed of the two – in part also because it is technically less challenging than the first version. On the other hand, there is the view of Glenn Gould, who ‘firmly believe[d] that Das Marienleben in its original form is the greatest song cycle ever written’. This is the version recorded here by Juliane Banse and Martin Helmchen.

Hindemith’s intensive involvement with Das Marienleben was not finished even after the work went to press:

Few artists of her generation are as successful in so many spheres and with such varied repertoire as Juliane Banse. Her extremely broad operatic repertoire ranges from the marschallin, Countess in Figaro, Fiordiligi, Donna Elvira, Vitellia, Genoveva, Leonore, Tatyana, Arabella, to Grete (Schreker’s Der ferne Klang). She made her stage debut as a twenty-year-old in the role of Pamina in Harry Kupfer’s production of Die Zauberflöte at the Komische Oper Berlin. Juliane Banse was born in southern Germany and grew up in Zurich. She took lessons first with Paul Steiner and later with Ruth Rohner at the Zurich Opera House, completing her studies under Brigitte Fassbaender and Daphne Evangelatos in Munich. From the winter semester 2016/2017 the singer herself took on a guest professorship at the Robert Schumann Academy in Dusseldorf. Juliane Banse is a well-received guest at the great opera houses as the Zurich Opera House, the Theater an der Wien, the State Opera in Vienna, the State Opera in Berlin, the Lyric Opera Chicago and the MET. The soprano is also highly in demand as a concert singer. She has worked with many renowned conductors, including Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink, Franz Welser-Möst, Mariss Jansons, Zubin Mehta and Manfred Honeck. Lied recitals feature regularly in her calendar. She was recently a guest at the Schubertiade Vilabertran, in Oxford, at the lied week in Schloss Elmau singing Wagner’s Wesendonck-Lieder and she also performed during the first concerts in the new Boulez Hall in Berlin, giving a recital accompanied by Wolfram Rieger. Many of her CD recordings have won awards. Two recordings by Juliane Banse received an Echo Klassik: Braunfels’s Jeanne d’Arc with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck (nominated ‘world premiere recording of the year’) and Mahler’s Eighth Symphony with the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich under David Zinman. In February 2017 her CD Unanswered Love was issued to great acclaim in the media. It contains in some cases the first recordings of works by Reimann, Rihm and Henze which she recorded with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Orchestra Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern and Christoph Poppen. Her most recent release Love’s embrace is her first CD with the Munich Radio Orchestra, containig works by Braunfels, Korngold, Marx and Pfitzner.

There are shooting-stars who enter the concert arena to the sound of a drum-roll, but often rapidly disappear again. And then, there are artists who gradually play their way into the footlights, until one day one cannot imagine them ever not being there. Normally, winning the Clara Haskil Competition would also have catapulted nineteen-year-old Martin Helmchen into the celebrity carousel of the classical music world. But concert agents and record companies were more cautious. And so Martin Helmchen developed his own attitude to music-making, and established himself in the the piano world’s premier league, with his expressive, utterly intimate playing. He appears regularly with the world-class orchestras of Boston and Chicago, London and Cleveland, Paris and Tokyo, and with major German radio symphony orchestras. After his débuts with the Berlin, Vienna and New York Philharmonic Orchestras and the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, he has finally reached Olympian rank. The conductors he works with include Herbert Blomstedt and Philippe Herreweghe, Marek Janowski and Vladimir Jurowski, Emmanuel Krivine and David Afkham, Andris Nelsons and Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Michael Sanderling, David Zinman, and above all, his longtime collaborator and supporter, Christoph von Dohnányi.

Martin Helmchen is particularly attentive to the field of chamber music – a passion which was particularly stimulated by Boris Pergamenschikow. Among Helmchen’s most frequent chamber music partners are his wife Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, Juliane Banse, Matthias Goerne, Veronika Eberle, Julia Fischer, Sabine Meyer, Julian Prégardien, and Christian Tetzlaff; and since 2010 he has also taught chamber music at the celebrated Kronberg Academy. Martin Helmchen has recorded for the Alpha Classics label since 2016.

Paul hindemith : das marienleben, op.27 (1922-23) Fin juin 1922, Hindemith commença à composer un cycle de lieder pour soprano et piano sur les quinze poèmes de Das Marienleben (« La Vie de Marie ») de Rainer Maria Rilke. Le cycle ne fut achevé que début juillet 1923, plus d’un an après. « Ce ne fut pas un travail facile », écrivit Hindemith à ce sujet dans le catalogue autographe de ses œuvres. Et, sous le dernier lied composé (n° 14, « Vom Tode Mariä II »), une note de sa main révèle son soulagement d’avoir terminé : « Alors il chanta un chant de louange » (citation du lied n° 5, « Argwohn Josephs »). Mi-juillet 1923, il annonça l’envoi de son manuscrit à ses éditeurs de Mayence en ces termes : « J’aime beaucoup ces pièces et je suis content de les avoir si bien réussies. Je suis certain qu’elles sont ce que j’ai composé de meilleur jusqu’à présent – et je ne crois pas qu’aucun cycle de lieder de proportions comparables ait été composé ces temps-ci. » Le temps inhabituellement long pour lui qu’il mit à composer ce cycle de lieder s’explique par le fait que Hindemith était en train d’accomplir un changement stylistique profond, passant de l’expressionisme musical à la Neue Sachlichkeit (Nouvelle Objectivité). La variété stylistique de la composition des quinze lieder formant Das Marienleben permet de retracer cette évolution. Le premier lied à avoir été composé, « Pietà » (n° 11), est un exemple de l’expressionisme propre à Hindemith, qui se manifeste par une extrême économie de moyens musicaux. L’accompagnement de piano se limite à quelques accords tenus et à des répétitions martelées de notes, tandis que la partie chantée, répétitive et composée à la manière d’un récitatif, produit l’effet d’une lamentation. La musique évoque ainsi l’image, développée dans le poème, de la Vierge en deuil, immobile devant son fils crucifié. Les lieder de ce cycle qui ont été composés plus tard relèvent d’une tout autre facture. La musique paraît désormais plus distanciée, parfois même indépendante du texte sur lequel elle est composée. L’expression musicale du texte est épurée dans des formes musicales déterminées, comme la basse obstinée (n° 13, « Vom Tode Mariä I ») ou les variations (n° 14, « Vom Tode Mariä II »). Le musicologue Hans Mersmann a commenté les particularités de cette nouvelle conception de l’expression dans le volume Moderne Musik (« Musique moderne »), paru en 1928, du Handbuch der Musikwissenschaft (« Manuel de musicologie »), en prenant l’exemple du lied n° 2, « Darstellung Mariä im Tempel », composé fin avril 1923 : Tous ceux qui avaient auparavant mis en musique les poèmes de Rilke l’avaient fait dans l’esprit de l’impressionnisme, correspondant au poète. Ils cherchaient à refléter le coloris raffiné et retenu, la sombre résonance de ses poèmes. L’harmonie jouait alors le rôle principal, étant le moyen d’expression symbolique qui convient le mieux à un poète impressionniste. Hindemith aborde ce matériau dans une perspective opposée. Il ne se place pas en musicien à côté du poète, mais en face de lui. Il courbe la ligne de ces poèmes vers le haut pour en faire des arcs vibrants ; il en forme un temple, leur donne les tensions et les vastes espaces intérieurs de l’église qu’appelle leur univers sacré. Un deuxième élément vient s’ajouter à cela : depuis sa perspective, il embrasse aussi les contenus spirituels des poèmes. Quand il construit une passacaille à partir de la présentation de Marie au temple, la relation interne entre le mot et le son, une fois surmontée la contradiction entre les plans, ne repose pas seulement sur la construction graduelle de la chaconne, qui s’élève

musicale fait naître une relation immédiate entre les paroles et les sons : il est parcouru tout entier par une ligne martelée au piano, dans un unisson presque ininterrompu, qui ne s’apaise pas. On entend clairement comment le doute et la suspicion rongent Joseph, l’époux qui se sent trompé. Même dans le chant de louange qu’il entonne, une fois que l’ange lui a expliqué les raisons de la grossesse de Marie, on entend encore son grognement irrité. Ce lied est en même temps un exemple de l’âpreté et de la force motrice extrême que l’on rencontre dans bien d’autres œuvres de jeunesse de Hindemith.

en s’incurvant par des répétitions régulières, mais aussi sur le principe de construction. La mise en forme d’un tel poème, à partir de la surface portante de la forme polyphonique, atteint, au-delà de toutes les relations visibles, le cœur du poème. Le musicien et le poète se rencontrent ici sur un sommet de très intense spiritualité, de froide abstraction et d’une forme largement déployée. Rilke n’avait encore jamais été perçu de ce point de vue.

La forte impression que produisit d’emblée la première exécution sur les auditeurs – je n’avais rien attendu du tout – me fit prendre conscience, pour la première fois dans mon existence de musicien, des impératifs éthiques de la musique et des devoirs moraux du musicien. Si j’avais donné mon meilleur pour Das Marienleben, ce meilleur, malgré toutes mes bonnes intentions, n’était pas encore assez bon pour que je puisse la classer une fois pour toutes parmi les œuvres réussies.

C’est en ces termes que Hindemith justifia la révision de Das Marienleben, entreprise en 1936 et achevée en 1948 avec la publication de la nouvelle version. À cette fin, il modifia le traitement presque instrumental de la voix et créa des convergences plus nettes entre la partie chantée et celle du piano. S’appuyant sur les connaissances en théorie musicale qu’il avait acquises dans les années 1930, il changea certains détails de composition, fit davantage ressortir les enchaînements harmoniques et élabora une symbolique des tonalités particulière.

Depuis lors, cette nouvelle version s’est imposée et c’est celle que l’on joue le plus souvent – notamment parce qu’elle est moins exigeante, du point de vue technique, que la première version. Glenn Gould était pourtant d’avis opposé, se déclarant « fermement convaincu que Das Marienleben, sous sa forme originale, était le plus grand cycle de lieder qui ait jamais été composé ». C’est cette version que Juliane Banse et Martin Helmchen interprètent dans le présent enregistrement.

Le travail intensif de Hindemith sur Das Marienleben ne prit pas fin une fois l’œuvre sous presse :

Rares sont les artistes de sa génération à avoir eu un tel succès dans autant de domaines et un répertoire aussi varié que Juliane Banse. Son répertoire lyrique extrêmement vaste s’étend de la Maréchale, Comtesse dans Figaro, de Fiordiligi, Donna Elvira, Vitellia, Genoveva, Leonore, Tatiana et Arabella à Grete (dans Der ferne Klang de Franz Schreker). Elle a fait ses débuts sur scène à l’âge de vingt ans en Pamina dans la production de Die Zauberflöte mise en scène par Harry Kupfer au Komische Oper de Berlin. Née dans le sud de l’Allemagne, Juliane Banse a grandi à Zurich. Elle a pris des leçons d’abord avec Paul Steiner et ensuite avec Ruth Rohner à l’Opéra de Zurich, achevant ses études avec Brigitte Fassbaender et Daphne Evangelatos à Munich. Depuis le semestre d’hiver 2016-2017, elle-même occupe un poste de professeur invité à l’Académie Robert Schumann de Düsseldorf. Elle est l’hôte très appréciée de grands théâtres lyriques comme l’Opéra de Zurich, le Theater an der Wien, l’Opéra d’État de Vienne, l’Opéra d’État de Berlin, le Lyric Opera de Chicago et le Met. Elle est également très sollicitée comme concertiste. Elle a travaillé avec de nombreux chefs renommés, dont Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink, Franz Welser-Möst, Mariss Jansons, Zubin Mehta et Manfred Honeck. Les récitals de lieder figurent régulièrement à son agenda. Elle a récemment été invitée à la Schubertiade de Vilabertran, à Oxford, et à la semaine du lied à Schloss Elmau pour chanter les Wesendonck Lieder de Wagner ; elle s’est également produite aux premiers concerts de la nouvelle Salle Boulez de Berlin, dans un récital accompagné par Wolfram Rieger. Bon nombre de ses CD ont été primés. Deux d’entre eux ont reçu un prix Echo Klassik : Jeanne d’Arc de Walter Braunfels avec l’Orchestre symphonique de la Radio suédoise sous la direction de Manfred Honeck (nommé « premier enregistrement mondial de l’année »), et la Huitième Symphonie de Mahler avec l’Orchestre de la Tonhalle de Zurich dirigé par David Zinman. En février 2017, son CD, Unanswered Love, a été encensé par les médias à sa sortie. Il contient les premiers enregistrements d’œuvres d’Aribert Reimann, Wolfgang Rihm et Hans Werner Henze, qu’elle a gravées avec la Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern et Christoph Poppen. Cette saison a vu la sortie de Love’s embrace, son premier CD avec l’Orchestre de la Radio de Munich, consacré à des œuvres de Walter Braunfels, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Joseph Marx et Hans Pfitzner.

Il y a des stars qui font une apparition soudaine au firmament du monde musical avant de disparaître parfois presque aussi vite. D’autres musiciens se révèlent peu à peu aux feux de la rampe et s’établissent de façon définitive. Le fait de remporter le Concours Clara Haskil aurait dû projeter le jeune Martin Helmchen, à dix-neuf ans, dans l’orbite des stars de la musique classique. Mais les imprésarios et les maisons de disques choisirent de procéder plus lentement. Martin Helmchen put ainsi développer sa propre personnalité musicale et s’imposer, avec son jeu très expressif, d’une grande authenticité, au premier rang du monde des pianistes. Il est régulièrement invité à jouer avec les grands orchestres symphoniques de Boston et Chicago, Londres et Cleveland, Paris et Tokyo, ainsi qu’avec les grands orchestres des radios allemandes. Ses débuts avec les orchestres philharmoniques de Berlin, Vienne et New York et avec le Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam l’ont définitivement placé au sommet. Parmi les chefs d’orchestres avec qui il a travaillé, mentionnons Herbert Blomstedt et Philippe Herreweghe, Marek Janowski et Vladimir Jurowski, Emmanuel Krivine et David Afkham, Andris Nelsons et Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Michael Sanderling, David Zinman, sans oublier son partenaire de longue date, Christoph von Dohnányi, qui l’a toujours soutenu.

Martin Helmchen s’intéresse tout particulièrement à la musique de chambre – une passion à laquelle Boris Pergamenschikow a donné une impulsion décisive. Ses partenaires de musique de chambre comptent son épouse Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, Juliane Banse, Matthias Goerne, Veronika Eberle, Julia Fischer, Sabine Meyer, Julian Prégardien et Christian Tetzlaff. Depuis 2010, il donne des cours de musique de chambre à la fameuse Kronberg Academy. Martin Helmchen enregistre pour le label Alpha Classics depuis 2016.

je suis sa douleur infinie – : et soudain elle s’affaissa.

Alors, les anges, la soutenant, la menèrent à Lui, la chantant bienheureuse, et lui firent franchir la dernière étape vers le plus haut.
