The hanac or hanaquoise is a dance from the Haná region (Moravia). The Rostock MS preserves many of these dances (named Polonoises, Hanac, Menuet etc.), some attributed to Telemann. She is watering a flower, so that her heart does not break. If her heart does break, we will not have a beautiful daughter-in-law.

You will be our daughter-in-law, if you bring us a bucket of water.

Oh, God, what should be done, where should I look for my daughter-in-law?

Oh, mon Dieu, que faut-il faire, où dois-je chercher ma bru ?

Du wirst unsere Schwiegertochter, Wenn du uns einen Eimer Wasser bringst. Oh, Gott, was tun, Wo soll ich nach meiner Schwiegertochter suchen?

Long is the rope for binding the door, short is the wit of the daughter- in-law. From behind the door, she waters the flowers.

CONCERTO IN G MAJOR FOR HARPSICHORD, STRINGS AND CONTINUO ALLEGRO SCHERZANDO

Soloists: S. ad-el (HARPSICHORD), M. comendant (CIMBALOM)

Concerto originally composed for the harpsichord but here shared with the cimbalom. The influence of the ‘cimbalom’ virtuoso Pantaleon Hebenstreit (1668-1750) was so important in north Germany that the famous organ and piano builder Gottfried Silbermann added a cimbalom register to his fortepianos. Many of these instruments were bought by Frederick the Great and used in Potsdam, where Benda was Konzertmeister.

ANTONIO VIVALDI (1678-1741) 9

CONCERTO IN D MAJOR RV 208 ‘GROSSO MOGUL’ GRAVE

Arranged by A. Tampieri and M. Comendant

Soloists: A. tampieri (VIOLIN), M. comendant (CIMBALOM)

The title of the concerto alludes to the Indian court of the Grand Mughal Akbar (1542-1605), but the melody has striking similarities with some of the Gypsy melodies preserved in the eighteenth-century MSS. What was Vivaldi’s experience of ‘eastern’ music?

JOHANN PHILIPP KIRNBERGER (1721-1783) 10 MASURA

Arranged by V. Ghielmi and S. Palúch

Soloists: s. palúch (VIOLIN), M. comendant (CIMBALOM), V. ghielmi (PARDESSUS DE VIOLE)

The masura or mazurka is a dance from the Polish region of Masuria. Kirnberger and other Baroque composers left us masura melodies, mainly on drone basses and related in the sources to bagpipe music or ‘hurdy-gurdy’ drone music.

13 HAJDUK DANCE

2‘43

Composed on Hajduk melodies preserved in Annae Szirmay-Keczer MS, Slovakia (1688)

Soloists: V. ghielmi (PARDESSUS DE VIOLE), S. Palúch (VIOLIN), M. comendant (CIMBALOM)

The Hajduks, originally cattle drovers, became irregular soldiers or sometime bandits in seventeenth-century Hungary. In 1604-1606 they supported István Bocskay, Lord of Bihar, in his insurrection against the Habsburgs in Transylvania. The MS of Annae Szirmay-Keczer contains several Hajduk songs.

This piece was originally conceived for violin, but is preserved in a late piano transcription. We present it here on bass viol, like many pieces preserved in the newly discovered Ledenburg collection (Osnabrück) and the Maltzan collection (Milicz, Poland).

Soloist: A. tampieri (VIOLIN)

Preserved in the piano transcription made by Ignatz Ruzitska (Magyar Nóták Veszprém Vármegyéböl, 1823-1832) with this original title, this piece was also known as ‘Requiem fiat Halalara’ (Requiem for a son) and arranged by Pablo de Sarasate in his Zigeunerweisen for violin and orchestra op.20,1878. Lassú, as explained in the introduction, is the adagio part of a verbunkos, normally followed by a friss (allegro). We have preserved this typical structure by using Bihari’s adagio as an introduction to the ensuing fast pieces.

The Heart of Sound, BFMI (Salzbourg-Hollywood).

This project, which we have toured for some time now to enthusiastic reactions from audiences, is intended to have the restless, tragic, superficial, melancholic, cheerful, wild and ironic character of the Gypsy – everything happens here and now. The past no longer exists, and ‘no one knows what the future holds’. And in fact, if we want to go back to other categories, what could be more Baroque than this? A continuum of different affects, a restlessness of the spirit founded on an innate and omnipresent memento mori. So when I came across the Gypsy melodies preserved in Sepsiszentgyörgy and began to think with my friends Marcel (cimbalom) and Stano (violin) about how to bring them back to life, the three of us wanted to explore various paths, including the most difficult and creative.

European art music is constantly in danger of being nullified by the intellectualism with which it is conceived and received, by the ‘discourse on music’, by the preoccupation with shoehorning it into clearly defined ‘genres’, subgenres, categories. This obsession, perhaps useful in commercial classifications or scholarly investigation, is utterly inadequate for the understanding of a vital and ephemeral phenomenon such as musical expression. If I have learnt something from long years of collaboration with traditional musicians, it is that sound and music should be understood with other categories of the spirit.

Sometimes, in a typically Gypsy way, we have taken ‘noble’ music (notes by Mozart . . . but which may been inspired in their turn by some Gypsy band, as when he marked the double bass part coll’arco al rovescio, with the bow reversed – that is, striking the strings col legno, with the wood, as Hungarian Gypsies do with their gardon) and treated it with irreverence . . . or with deeper respect. There are so many points of view here, but just one aim: to demonstrate the inexhaustible musical inspiration of the Gypsy tradition. Vittorio Ghielmi

In the material used here, it is often only the tune that has come down to us, a mere memory aid that does not represent any ‘ performance’ that ever actually took place, but simply a melodic theme, often on non-western scales. We have sometimes tried to create a ‘documentary’, that is, to offer a possible ‘reconstruction’ of what the music may have sounded like (as in Czigány and Magyar Tanz), but at other times we have not hesitated to create a ‘film’, by incorporating the sparse material into a newly invented story (as in Hayduk by Stano Palúch). Telemann transcribed many melodies from the eastern European tradition, almost like an ethnomusicologist, adding harmonic accompaniment (sometimes of disarming simplicity). We have extrapolated the original melodies from his pieces and presented them in a version perhaps closer to how Telemann heard them played by ‘folk’ bands (Vielle).

The coexistence of cultures in the eastern part of Europe produced a very special musical flavour which has always fascinated musicians from the eastern side of our continent. Such composers as Vivaldi, Tartini, Telemann (who lived in Poland for a while) and many others were deeply inspired by the music they encountered from this ‘eastern side’; on the other hand a host of string players from central and eastern Europe filled the ranks of the most famous German orchestras (e.g. the Benda family in Berlin, Georg Czarth (Jiří Čart) in Mannheim and František Jiránek in Dresden). Bands of Romani or ‘Gypsy’ musicians, mentioned in Hungary as early as 1489, played a very important role in all the territories dominated by the Habsburgs, including Hungary, Slovakia, Transcarpathian Ukraine, Transylvania, Banat, Vojvodina and Slavonia, spreading influences in all directions. A population without a land, a people ‘out of time’, the Gypsies have always occupied the very bipolar role of being at once a marginal community and a ‘romantically’ admired free people. Ancestors of the Roma people came from the north-western part of the Indian subcontinent around 1000 years ago. It seems they accompanied armies, in which the Roma were useful as blacksmiths, but also for entertainment purposes as musicians, singers or dancers. This relationship with the army continued until the eighteenth century, when bands of Gypsies played for the recruitment feasts given by the Habsburg authorities, which were known in German as Werbungen. As a result, the style of music performed there acquired the name of verbunkos. It consisted of impassioned adagios (lassú, like those by Bihari and Lavotta in this recording) and fast allegros (friss), which lie at the origin of the ‘urban’ Hungarian Gypsy music later criticised by Béla Bartók in his attempt to promote the traditional music of the Hungarian countryside.

Some of these Gypsy players became very famous virtuosos, among them the female violinist Panna Czinka (1711-72) and János Bihari (1764-1827), who founded his own Zigeunerkapelle and was esteemed as one of the finest violinists anywhere in eastern Europe (Liszt still remembered him in his book on Hungarian music in 1883, and Beethoven was an admirer). The Empress Maria Theresa herself commissioned a glass cimbalom for the Romani cimbalom player Simon Banyák as a testimony of her appreciation. These musicians occasionally achieved upper-class admiration (Bihari was raised to the nobility) and played in palaces or in orchestras like Haydn’s in Eszterháza. We should not think of the Gypsy music of the eighteenth century as ‘uncultivated’ rustic music: we find in the manuscripts some folk and traditional dances, marches for bagpipes and percussion (surely connected with the army, in which Gypsies also played those instruments), as well as ‘concert-hall’ music such as the Requiem by Bihari. In this recording we have tried to represent all these styles. Most of the Gypsy players were unable to read music, but some of their marvellous pieces were preserved by the transcriptions of other musicians, such as the pianist Ignatz Ruzitska (Pezinok, 1777 – Veszprém, 1833), who saved the music of Bihari and János Lavotta for posterity in a famous collection containing hundreds of transcriptions. The Roma, as an ethnic group living as a diaspora community, are remarkable for the way they kept their distinctive lifestyle in the midst of different cultures, and preserved or anticipated local cultural traditions in their own way. This is the case with flamenco (an example of musical-dance

Thorough research into the manuscripts of the eighteenth century reveals a rich and varied repertory. In these sources, pieces by ‘classical’ Baroque composers like Telemann, Hasse and Vivaldi are copied alongside Magyar, Czigány or Hajduk dances, often conceived in ‘exotic’ scales, which derive from the traditional music of Banat or Transylvania, as well as other dances such as the polonaise and the hanák (from the Haná region in Moravia). A particularly clear example of this is the eighteenth-century manuscript now held in Sepsiszentgyörgy.

This recording features three songs that were transcribed for ethnomusicological purposes in the early twentieth century. They belong to the nomadic groups of Roma called the Vlax group, whose ancestors probably came to modern Hungary in the seventeenth century from the area that is now Romania. The songs are in the dialect of the Lovári (literally ‘horse-dealers’). They were performed using virtually no musical instruments, but with the accompaniment of finger snapping, an improvised oral bass, or spoons. They are authentic folksongs in the Vlax Romani language. In the case of the Vlax Roma group, two types of songs were sung: mulatouša d´íja, which told a story, and khelimaske d´íja, which were used for dancing (a fundamental element in Romani culture, which had also ritual functions). In the khelimaske d´íja, the words are not important, as in the song ‘Tranana’, arranged on this recording by Stanislav Palúch for Il Suonar Parlante.

form growing out of Arab, Jewish, Spanish and Gypsy influences), but also the cyganskij romans (Gypsy romance) popular with the Russian aristocracy in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, or the ‘neo-Hungarian song’ developed during the same period in the area of historical Hungary. So the Roma played a very important and dialectical role in the conservation (and formation) of national musical styles and age-old instrumental techniques throughout Hungary, Bohemia, Slovakia, Transylvania etc. They preserved old traditions which, thanks to them, have survived until the present day, whereas such traditions disappeared in the rest of ‘civilised’ Europe. One example is the percussive cello (gardon) in Hungary.

Vittorio Ghielmi is a viol player, conductor and composer, described as ‘an alchemist of sound’ and ‘a shaman of sound’ for having developed a new musical language as well as a different insight into the sound of the early repertory. His ensemble Il Suonar Parlante is invited all over the world and he appears regularly as a soloist or conductor with orchestras (modern and Baroque). He has given the premieres of many works (Kevin Volans, White Man’s Sleep, Teatro Regio Torino; Nadir Vassena, Bagatelle trascendentali, Berlin Philharmonie; Uri Caine, Concerto for viola da gamba and orchestra, Amsterdam Concertgebouw and Concerto for viol, basset-horn and orchestra, Vienna Musikverein). As one of the leading figures of the early music scene, he has shared the stage with such artists as Gustav Leonhardt (duo), Cecilia Bartoli, Reinhard Goebel, Viktoria Mullova, Giovanni Antonini, Luca Pianca, Lorenzo Ghielmi, András Schiff and Thomas Quasthoff, and jazz stars including Kenny Wheeler, Paolo Fresu and Markus Stockhausen. He has been assistant to Riccardo Muti. In 2007 he conceived and conducted a performance piece based on Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu nostri with the Hollywood filmmaker Marc Reshovsky and the Swedish choir Rilke Ensemble (Gunnar Eriksson). He has been artist in residence in Madrid (2007), at the Musikfest Stuttgart (2010), in Segovia (2011) and at Bozar in Brussels (2011). In 2009 he performed the complete works of Forqueray at De Bijloke in Ghent. In 2018 he conducts Rameau’s Pygmalion at the Drottningholms Slottsteater (Stockholm). Vittorio Ghielmi’s fieldwork on surviving musical traditions has earned him the Erwin Bodky Award (USA). His collaboration with traditional performers is documented in the film The Heart of Sound, BFMI (Salzburg-Hollywood). His work as arranger and composer has been awarded an ECHO Klassik Preis (2015). His countless solo CDs have won many prizes. A professor at the Salzburg Mozarteum and Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Music in London, he is active in research on early music with such publishers as Fuzeau and Minkoff. His method for viol (with Paolo Biordi, Ut Orpheus, Bologna) enjoys a worldwide reputation.

The expression Il Suonar Parlante originates with Paganini and refers to a special technique by which musical instruments can really imitate the human voice. Since 2002 we have been working on this technique, which leads to a completely new understanding of the Classical and Early Musical heritage, but also the creation of highly innovative musical projects. We began as a viol consort and in 2007 we founded Il Suonar Parlante Orchestra, which has played in leading venues including the Berlin Philharmonie, the Salzburg Festival and the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid. Our first CD as a viol quartet Full of Colour was acknowledged as ‘a revolution for the sound of period instruments’ (Diapason d’Or, Choc du Monde de la Musique, Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik). Other releases have included Purcell Fantasias, Die Kunst der Fuge, Der Kastanienball and Goldberg Variations (Uri Caine). Il Suonar Parlante was orchestra in residence in Madrid in 2007 with the Swedish choir Rilke Ensemble (Gunnar Eriksson). Further residencies were held at the Stuttgart Festival in 2010, the Segovia Music Festival 2011, and Bozar in Brussels. The group’s most recent releases are Barbarian Beauty – a collection of concertos for viola da gamba and orchestra (Graun, Telemann, Tartini) with the Moldavian cimbalom virtuoso Marcel Comendant – and The Passion of Musick with Dorothee Oberlinger, which won the Echo Klassik Preis 2015.
