CARNET DE ROUTE
A ROAD MAP | FAHRTENBUCH
BRUNO HELSTROFFER
I remember the first time I bought a compact disc – We can’t dance by Genesis. I was fourteen, and didn’t even have the money to buy a player for it. The CD was a magical, precious object; it stayed in my room, and I would gaze at it as if by some miracle I might be able to hear the music encoded on it. Since then I have acquired many CDs, and even recorded about thirty with various ensembles, but this one, the one you’re now holding, is in a way the first – yet again! It’s a road map – something I have never really had in my life. It’s a hurly-burly account of my years playing blues and rock music and early music; the thousands of miles I’ve travelled with my wonderful theorbo, cities, landscapes, railways, skies, scents, lights; above all – the music of the people I’ve met.

1. PARTITE VARIATE SOPRA QUEST’ARIA
FRANCESE DETTA L’ALEMANA 5’07 ALESSANDRO PICCININI (1566-1638)
2. CORRENTE VI SOPRA L’ALEMANA 1’51 ALESSANDRO PICCININI

Instead of the usual musicological analysis you may be expecting, this time it seems to me more meaningful to say a few words about the people who revealed these pieces to me, helped me discover them, and something about our joint history. For what would our profession be, without such encounters? Partite variate sopra quest’aria francese detta l’alemana is a lute arrangement by Piccinini of a melody also known as ‘La Monica’. In the early 2000s, Elisabeth Geiger showed me a new CD, saying: ‘This organist is so fascinated by the ‘La Monica’ tune that he has recorded it in playback, so as to multiply his own performance! It’s Freddy Eichelberger.’ An obsession realized: this idea remained imprinted on me, to the extent that ever since, every time I’ve heard ‘La Monica’ it’s as if Freddy’s signature is concealed somewhere inside it.
Was wäre unser Beruf ohne diese Begegnungen?
In the United States at the end of the 19th century, the railway tramps, the hobos, used to graffiti their nicknames along the railtracks they travelled – the name that was their ‘moniker’ (or ‘monica’)… Piccinini’s Corrente VI sopra l’alemana is the energetic pendant to the noble, meditative allemande. This is an opportunity to give my theorbo everything it’s got – as I did when I was playing my Gibson
guitar in the brasserie cellars of Strasbourg: my guitar solos howled out as noisily as the squads of drunken soldiers we had to contend with! And many thanks to the frightened owls of Noirlac Abbey who make their contribution at the end of the piece…
Comme un Beffroi came to me in a dream in which I heard the music of the first four bars, which I scribbled down on a piece of paper; that dream also gave me the title, as well as a sense of the presence of my friend Michel Godard. I brought those sketched-out notes with me to Rome, where we both worked together for a year. In the corridors of the maternity hospital where my daughter Iris first saw the light of day, I further pursued this quest, this composition… After I had written a chamber orchestra version for Marianne Piketty, it seemed only the natural and sensible thing for me to ask Iris’s mum, Rosemary Standley, to put words to this melody, and to sing them. And finally, to support this tune on a bass line that would be flexible yet robust, I invited the help of Emek Evçi, a member of the PIS Quartet (Alpha 523).

7. ARPEGGIATA A MIO MODO 2’48 BELLEROFONTE CASTALDI (1581-1649)

Toccata Nona by J.H.Kapsberger is linked here to Perivoli Blue. Perivoli, a village in the south of the island of Corfu, was the backdrop for a memorable walk, a stand-out moment under an implacably fierce sun and a silent, vibrant sea; ‘…like a sea made of leather,’ as she said to me back then… I dedicate this piece to two musicians who have been important on my journey, each in their own way: lutenist Claire Antonini and contrabass player Renaud Garcia-Fons.
Thanks Toumani expresses my fascination with the music of the Mandinka people. A prelude and a postlude in harmonics recalling the sound of the ‘sanza’ (a metallophone keyboard) enclose an improvisation that imagines the theorbo transformed into a kora. This piece is dedicated to the great master Toumani Diabaté.
L’Arpeggiata a mio modo by Castaldi was one of the first challenges I set myself on the theorbo. A very beautiful version by Vincent Dumestre, accompanied by a viol (Alpha 320) had really impressed me, and gave me the impetus to add my own humble effort, here in a solo version. I recorded it as an improvisation, without any written score, just a free recitation.

Gnossienne n°1 by Erik Satie seemed to take shape under my fingers without any advance warning, and its place here was guaranteed by one of those circumstances which brook no contradiction: it was the piece chosen by my friend the photographer Richard Dumas (who designed the cover and portrait page of the CD liner notes) for the video clip of the album.
Bergamasca by J.H.Kapsberger. This dance that originally came from Bergamo, northern Italy, makes the theorbo sound festive and lighthearted: the appropriate partner for a joyfully noisy carnival procession, where masks and rustic bergamasks interweave in a madcap riot of clowns and buffoons.
In the room where my theorbo lies… During the passacaglia by Kapsberger, the actor and writer Jean-Luc Debattice reads a poem he dedicated to me in 2011; it was rediscovered by chance in 2017 by a random dip into my archive. I was staggered to discover that this poem reflected stages of my life that I’d gone through after it was written. Was its rediscovery a mysterious parable, or a prophetic portent?
11. CLAN 4’22 BRUNO HELSTROFFER
12. A TEA WITH BACH 4’40 JEAN-SEBASTIEN BACH / BRUNO HELSTROFFER
13. TOCCATA UNDICESIMA 2’06 JOHANNES HIERONYMUS KAPSBERGER
14. VOS LUTHS 3’51 BRUNO HELSTROFFER
18
CLAN was my first composition for theorbo. Between a rehearsal and a concert, I profited from a brief period when I was left alone in the theatre, daydreaming about future solo concerts… I tried something out, though its outlines were still very hazy. I started to play, to begin a movement with no aim in view… and the piece materialized! It was at that precise moment that it became clear to me which direction I ought to take with my instrument. It was like a door opening: since then it has never shut.
A tea with Bach is an arrangement of the Minuet from Bach’s Suite No.1 for cello. I had the vision of a seesaw in an 18th century garden, and a long general discussion with Johann Sebastian. The metre, with its five beats to a bar, represents the temporal distortion of this anachronistic scene.
The Toccata Undicesima serves as an introduction to an improvisation, Vos luths. It evokes India, a country I have not yet visited, and the use of a bottleneck slide suggests wreaths of smoke, whose graceful delicacy has always fascinated me: it allows me to end this album with a kind of mystical meditation…

A MUSE AND A MUSICIAN BY ERWAN ALIX A muse, and a musician – journeys, paths, gardens; a living tradition, a theorbo, and encounters in the present moment. Bruno Helstroffer’s music is stimulated by all these things together. In 2001, Bruno Helstroffer, a self-taught guitarist, made a radical, two-fold decision: to dedicate himself to music, and to the theorbo in particular. Since then he has toured the world, giving first performances and engaging in artistic collaborations. Whether by train, bus or airplane, his journeys are invariably accompanied by what he affectionately calls his ‘travelling companion’ – a theorbo. Its lute-like bulging body is fragile and delicate, and the long neck with its dual peg boxes exceeds almost any size restrictions: not exactly the most easily transportable of musical instruments. But when you ask him what attracted him to it, he replies that he did not choose the theorbo – the theorbo chose him. Since then he has led the life of an instrumentalist, with all that entails. Naturally it involves everything that usually gets mentioned in CD booklets: prestigious concerts, influential encounters, special moments. But in a musician’s life, there are also laborious days that are sometimes more rewarding, and sometimes less so: long hours on the road, long periods of enforced non-activity, in lodgings, hotels, airports. Days of intimate preoccupation with one’s instrument, patient hard work. This album was born of a need that in 2016 became compelling, to record a memorial to a more than fifteen-year musical career shaped by diverse landscapes and encounters. Bruno Helstroffer had just deposited his luggage in Rome, where chance put him in unfamiliar surroundings: alone with himself and his theorbo. It was destabilising and at the same time inspiring – just the stimulus he needed to summon the muse. After a long ripening process, his time in Rome proved the right moment to harvest all that he had previously sowed.
26 26
Unjustly neglected since its glorious heyday, the theorbo is unique in boasting a historic repertoire of great beauty, while remaining a terra incognita still to be discovered and explored. Bruno Helstroffer’s approach is founded on these two approaches: to breathe new life into a repertoire that has been too long forgotten, while also creating new works for the instrument. Bruno Helstroffer has a way of composing that is very much his own, one that is inspired by the master lutenists of the 16th and 17th century. Like a craftsman, he works in direct manual contact with the material, playing the instrument as he composes for it. He takes inspiration from traditional folk music as well as from early music. Everything begins with an initial rhythmic motive, often that of a dance step, producing a series of chords. A theme emerges, with the lutenist’s skill called into play to create variations on the theme. All of that happens without being written down – there is no pencil or paper involved. Instead, the music is directly tried out on the theorbo, the musician at one with his instrument. As a result of this intimate link the music pours out freely, each new composition being the memory of a moment when the muse responded to the call. Bruno Helstroffer’s way of relating to music has found an echo in the images created by Alcarr Iceol, a visual artist from Rennes: these fruits of mutual artistic sympathies and a deep friendship were conceived by the artist during meditative periods of listening to the sound of the theorbo. They are a set of variations on a theme, viewed through the small opening of an oculus, as if through a keyhole… Each image shows the richness of a mini-universe, playing with the boundaries between the interior and exterior. Bruno Helstroffer draws his inspiration from walking, wandering, meandering. Rome was exactly the right setting. Together with Bologna, Rome is one of the native cities of the theorbo, where every lutenist can follow the steps of Johannes Hieronymus Kapsberger, who spent part of his life there. Bruno Helstroffer has criss-crossed the city en route to his favourite spots: one is the Campo de’Fiori with its statue of Giordano Bruno (the year of whose death is generally accepted as the start of the baroque era, that ends with the death of Bach). Another attraction is the gardens of the Villa Doria Pamphili, where nature has

menu not yet been entirely conquered; but he is also fond of contemporary Rome, and the relaxed pleasure of drinking a caffe latte in the Quattro Venti bar. Whether they originate in Rome, Paris, Corfu or elsewhere, each of Bruno Helstroffer’s compositions plays its part in his journey: something they have in common with the older repertoire pieces – they too have often been shaped by journeys. So for example in the piece by Piccinini, the theme ‘La Monica’ has an Italian point of departure, and after making a musical mini-tour of Europe it returns under the alias ‘a French song called L’Allemande’. Whether composed on the road, or inspired by the muse during journeys of an interior kind, Helstroffer’s pieces are permeated by traditional music, and the theorbo itself seems to enjoy sounding like a Malian kora, or an Indian tanpura. Yet each piece on this album, whether it is a new composition or a repertoire work, has its own story to tell. Bruno Helstroffer’s wish was to transmit these stories as spontaneously as possible: simply and naturally, without any artificial aids. The recording took place in the Abbey of Noirlac, in the heart of the Berry region. Its walls could certainly tell some tales – they have seen English soldiers coming and going during the Hundred Years’ War, as well as refugees fleeing from Franco’s Spain. For our recording sessions, however, it was the dead of night, and there was no crowd, no din: just a theorbist and his instrument, a few hooting owls, and the music.

LIKE A BELFRY | WIE EIN BEFFROI ROSEMARY STANDLEY
The trees stir slowly in the pallor of dusk The rocks are thirsting for a summer shower Suddenly I feel the wind blowing, coming to find me It caresses, embraces me, then lets me go, moves away, comes back in the space of a breath, a last breath. I awake by the side of a road, consoled, calmed In this last giddy whirl of winter, Boreas has filled the charcoal sky with light Here stands a tower like a belfry, a ruin, at the summit of an exposed rock. I rest at the foot of the rock, cradled by the tide In the dusty silence, I hear the reverberating echo of a prayer.

DANS LA CHAMBRE DE MON THÉORBE IN THE ROOM WHERE MY THEORBO LIES IM ZIMMER MEINER THEORBE JEAN-LUC LABATTICE
